5. New geochemical and geochronological insights on forearc magmatism across the Sanak-Baranof belt, southern Alaska: A tale of two belts.

The Sanak-Baranof belt includes a series of near-trench plutons that intrude the outboard Chugach-Prince William terrane over ~2200 km along the southern Alaskan margin. We present new petrological, geochronological, and geochemical data for comagmatic microgranitoid enclaves and granitoid rocks from the Crawfish Inlet (ca. 53-47 Ma) and Krestof Island (ca. 52 Ma) plutons on Baranof and Krestof Islands, as well as the Mount Stamy (ca. 51 Ma) and Mount Draper (ca. 54-53 Ma) plutons and associated mafic rocks that intrude the Boundary block at Nunatak Fiord near Yakutat, Alaska, USA. These data suggest that intrusion of the Sanak-Baranof belt plutons is actually a tale of two distinct belts: a western belt with crystallization ages that young systematically from west to east (63-56 Ma) and an eastern belt with crystallization ages ranging from 55 to 47 Ma, but with no clear age progression along the margin. Hf isotope analyses of magmatic zircon from the western Sanak-Baranof belt become increasingly evolved toward the east with εHft = 9.3 ± 0.7 on Sanak Island versus εHft = 5.1 ± 0.5 for the Hive Island pluton in Resurrection Bay. The Hf isotope ratios of eastern Sanak-Baranof belt rocks also vary systematically with age but in reverse, with more evolved ratios in the oldest plutons (εHft = +4.7 ± 0.7) and more primitive ratios in the youngest plutons (εHft = +13.7 ± 0.7). We propose that these findings indicate distinct modes of origin and emplacement histories for the western and eastern segments of the Sanak-Baranof belt, and that the petrogenesis of eastern Sanak-Baranof belt plutons (emplaced subsequent to 57-55 Ma) was associated with an increasing mantle component supplied to the youngest eastern Sanak-Baranof belt magmas. These plutons reveal important information about offshore plate geometries and a dynamic period of plate reorganization ca. 57-55 Ma, but a clearer picture of the tectonic setting that facilitated these Sanak-Baranof belt intrusions cannot be resolved until the magnitude and significance of lateral translation of the Chugach-Prince William terrane are better understood. - Abstract
Over the last decade, an increasing number of studies have used soundscapes to address diverse ecological questions. Sound represents one of the few sources of information capable of providing in situ insights into processes occurring within opaque soil matrices. To date, the use of soundscapes for soil macrofauna monitoring has been experimentally tested only in controlled laboratory environments. Here we assess the validity of laboratory predictions and explore the use of soil soundscape proxies for monitoring soil macrofauna (i.e., earthworm) activities in an outdoor context. In a common garden experiment in northern Sweden, we constructed outdoor mesocosm plots (N = 36) containing two different Arctic vegetation types (meadow and heath) and introduced earthworms to half of these plots. Earthworms substantially altered the ambient soil soundscape under both vegetation types, as measured by both traditional soundscape indices and frequency band power levels, although their acoustic impacts were expressed differently in heath versus meadow soils. While these findings support the as-of-yet untapped promise of using belowground soundscape analyses to monitor soil ecosystem health, direct acoustic emissions from earthworm activities appear to be an unlikely proxy for tracking worm activities at daily timescales. Instead, earthworms indirectly altered the soil soundscape by ‘re-engineering’ the soil matrix: an effect that was dependent on vegetation type. Our findings suggest that long-term (i.e., seasonal) earthworm activities in natural soil settings can likely be monitored indirectly via their impacts on soundscape measures and acoustic indices. Analyzing soil soundscapes may enable larger-scale monitoring of high-latitude soils and is directly applicable to the specific case of earthworm invasions within Arctic soils, which has recently been identified as a potential threat to the resilience of high-latitude ecosystems. - Abstract
Interactions between organic carbon (OC) and minerals represent a critical mechanism for stabilizing organic matter in soils. Because both mineral weathering and plant productivity are negatively affected by soil erosion, mineral-associated organic carbon (MOC) chemistry is also expected to vary with erosion intensity. Here we show that MOC chemistry, determined by carbon X-ray absorption near-edge fine structure spectroscopy (XANES), exhibits little difference across a large (10-fold) gradient in erosion-derived soil turnover times. Mineral-associated OC chemistry further fails to explain the variation in radiocarbon-based MOC turnover times. Our results suggest that soil OC longevity is largely independent of organic matter chemistry in steep mountainous landscapes where soil development is constrained by erosion.

- Abstract
Earthworms are an important soil taxon as ecosystem engineers, providing a variety of crucial ecosystem functions and services. Little is known about their diversity and distribution at large spatial scales, despite the availability of considerable amounts of local-scale data. Earthworm diversity data, obtained from the primary literature or provided directly by authors, were collated with information on site locations, including coordinates, habitat cover, and soil properties. Datasets were required, at a minimum, to include abundance or biomass of earthworms at a site. Where possible, site-level species lists were included, as well as the abundance and biomass of individual species and ecological groups. This global dataset contains 10,840 sites, with 184 species, from 60 countries and all continents except Antarctica. The data were obtained from 182 published articles, published between 1973 and 2017, and 17 unpublished datasets. - Abstract
Earthworms are an important soil taxon as ecosystem engineers, providing a variety of crucial ecosystem functions and services. Little is known about their diversity and distribution at large spatial scales, despite the availability of considerable amounts of local-scale data. Earthworm diversity data, obtained from the primary literature or provided directly by authors, were collated with information on site locations, including coordinates, habitat cover, and soil properties. Datasets were required, at a minimum, to include abundance or biomass of earthworms at a site. Where possible, site-level species lists were included, as well as the abundance and biomass of individual species and ecological groups. This global dataset contains 10,840 sites, with 184 species, from 60 countries and all continents except Antarctica. The data were obtained from 182 published articles, published between 1973 and 2017, and 17 unpublished datasets. Amalgamating data into a single global database will assist researchers in investigating and answering a wide variety of pressing questions, for example, jointly assessing aboveground and belowground biodiversity distributions and drivers of biodiversity change.

- Abstract
Earthworms are an important soil taxon as ecosystem engineers, providing a variety of crucial ecosystem functions and services. Little is known about their diversity and distribution at large spatial scales, despite the availability of considerable amounts of local-scale data. Earthworm diversity data, obtained from the primary literature or provided directly by authors, were collated with information on site locations, including coordinates, habitat cover, and soil properties. Datasets were required, at a minimum, to include abundance or biomass of earthworms at a site. Where possible, site-level species lists were included, as well as the abundance and biomass of individual species and ecological groups. This global dataset contains 10,840 sites, with 184 species, from 60 countries and all continents except Antarctica. The data were obtained from 182 published articles, published between 1973 and 2017, and 17 unpublished datasets. Amalgamating data into a single global database will assist researchers in investigating and answering a wide variety of pressing questions, for example, jointly assessing aboveground and belowground biodiversity distributions and drivers of biodiversity change.

Data collated from data provided by original data collectors or from data provided within published articles. The MetaData.csv provides information on each of the original data sources, including bibliographic information about the original article and information on how many sites were sampled. The SiteData.csv gives site-level variables, such as geographic coordinates, the environmental parameters as well as site-level community metrics (species richness, total abundance and total biomass). The SppOccData.csv provides the observation level data - the occurrence, abundance and/or biomass of individual species/morpho-species/life-stage at a particular site. Not every data source contained such observation level data. - Abstract
Soil organisms, including earthworms, are a key component of terrestrial ecosystems. However, little is known about their diversity, their distribution, and the threats affecting them. We compiled a global dataset of sampled earthworm communities from 6928 sites in 57 countries as a basis for predicting patterns in earthworm diversity, abundance, and biomass. We found that local species richness and abundance typically peaked at higher latitudes, displaying patterns opposite to those observed in aboveground organisms. However, high species dissimilarity across tropical locations may cause diversity across the entirety of the tropics to be higher than elsewhere. Climate variables were found to be more important in shaping earthworm communities than soil properties or habitat cover. These findings suggest that climate change may have serious implications for earthworm communities and for the functions they provide.

Soil organisms, including earthworms, are a key component of terrestrial ecosystems. However, little is known about their diversity, their distribution, and the threats affecting them. We compiled a global dataset of sampled earthworm communities from 6928 sites in 57 countries as a basis for predicting patterns in earthworm diversity, abundance, and biomass. We found that local species richness and abundance typically peaked at higher latitudes, displaying patterns opposite to those observed in aboveground organisms. However, high species dissimilarity across tropical locations may cause diversity across the entirety of the tropics to be higher than elsewhere. Climate variables were found to be more important in shaping earthworm communities than soil properties or habitat cover. These findings suggest that climate change may have serious implications for earthworm communities and for the functions they provide.

29. Arctic worming: Human-facilitated earthworm invasion transforms soil organic matter budgets and pools in Fennoscandian forests

- Abstract
Earth’s high latitude ecosystems are already under dire threat from climate warming, permafrost thaw, and intensifying natural resource exploitation. In addition to these ongoing concerns, accelerating urbanization, agricultural expansion, and greater opportunities for recreation in high-latitude regions are likely to introduce a less conspicuous but potentially potent threat: non-native geoengineeing earthworms. Earthworms were eradicated from northern N. America (including Minnesota) during the last glaciation, and it is now established that humans are (re-) introducing exotic earthworm species into these forests with dramatic consequences on soil and ecosystem functioning. However, their invasiveness and capacity to modify high-latitude boreal and arctic forests like those in Fennoscandia remains largely unknown. Here I explore two inter-related hypotheses concerning earthworms and soils in Fennoscandian forests: H1) despite their different human history and proximity to the native range of Lumbricidae earthworms (Southern and Central Europe), I predicted that Pleistocene glaciations also extirpated earthworms from Fennoscandia, suggesting that European earthworms (if present) are also non-native and invasive in these landscapes; and H2) if introduced by humans, the invasive earthworms transform Fennoscandian forest soil morphologies and soil organic matter (SOM) dynamics by removing thick organic layers at the forest floor and forming A-horizon (mineral topsoil) in their wake. To address H1, I tested a series of sub-hypotheses stating that: 1) earthworms did not colonize the Fennoscandian landscape via dispersal by brackish seawater, nor were they introduced by early indigenous peoples (Sami) who followed the retreating glaciers into northern Fennoscandia; and 2) earthworms are spreading into Fennoscandian forests from ‘worm point sources’ created by modern human-mediated dispersal vectors such as farming, fishing, gardening, and logging (among others). Although I could not dispel the possibility that small epigeic-type earthworms may have entered the Fennoscandian landscape considerably earlier via water-mediated dispersal and/or by ‘hitch-hiking’ along with Sami settlers, I found that more impactful ‘geoengineering’ species are only present in arctic landscapes associated with more modern (i.e. last two centuries) human disturbance (supporting H1) and are radiating outward from these anthropogenic point sources into virgin arctic and boreal forests. Furthermore, in line with H2, expansion of these geoengineers into adjacent forests consistently induced changes to forest soil morphologies and nutrient cycling regimes, including rapid reduction of the SOM pool in organic horizons and re-allocation of this SOM into mineral horizons: wherein it is sorbed onto mineral surfaces and/or occluded within aggregates. This belowground transformation likely has significant aboveground consequences as well as implications for the long-term carbon balance of boreal and arctic ecosystems, which store more than half (~ 53%) of earth’s soil carbon. Furthermore, based on results from N. America, this ‘unseen’ invasion may also have cascading effects on fungal and microbial associations, plant communities, and overall ecosystem functioning. Considering that the arctic is already being disproportionately affected by climate change and that human activities in these regions are likely to accelerate as these regions warm, additional research assessing the ecological impacts of arctic worming is urgently needed.
