1. Nordugrid ARC Datastaging and Cache Efficiency gains on HPC and cloud resources

Abstract

The Worldwide LHC Computing Grid (WLCG) is today comprised of a range of different types of resources such as cloud centers, large and small HPC centers, volunteer computing as well as the traditional grid resources. The Nordic Tier 1 (NT1) is a WLCG computing infrastructure distributed over the Nordic countries. The NT1 deploys the Nordugrid ARC-CE, which is non-intrusive and lightweight, originally developed to cater for HPC centers where no middleware could be installed on the worker nodes. The NT1 runs ARC in the native Nordugrid mode which contrary to the Pilot mode leaves jobs data transfers up to ARC. ARCs data transfer capabilities together with the ARC Cache are the most important features of ARC.In this article we will describe the datastaging and cache functionality of the ARC-CE set up as an edge service to an HPC or cloud resource, and show the gain in efficiency this model provides compared to a traditional pilot model, especially for sites with remote storage.

16. Transparent execution of ARC jobs on Desktop Grid resources.

Abstract

In the EDGI EU FP7 project a federation of Desktop Grid sites are built and maintained by the infrastructure team. These sites provide volunteer and institutional type resources in the range of hundreds of thousands of CPUs. The EDGI project offers these resources for the various gLite, ARC and UNICORE user communities and supports job execution with transparent bridging in the cases of gLite, ARC and UNICORE middleware. The paper focuses on the ARC side. A special bridging mechanism has been implemented in order to forward ARC jobs towards the Desktop Grid servers. The ARC bridge works in such a way that the A-REX execution service sees the Desktop Grid as a virtual batch system and users are able to submit to the Desktop resources seamlessly. The solution is scalable and includes handling large amount of files through a P2P distributed file system, called Attic. The paper gives a short overview of the EDGI infrastructure and introduces the technical details of the bridging mechanism. The introduced solution is also part of the EMI and EGI software stack to make it easily accessible for the ARC infrastructure providers. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Abstract

At the Geneva University Hospitals work is in progress to establish a computing facility for medical image analysis, potentially using several hundreds of desktop computers. Typically, hospitals do not have a computer infrastructure dedicated to research, nor can the data leave the hospital network for the reasons of privacy. For this purpose, a novel batch system called GridFactory has been tested along-side with the well-known batch system Condor. GridFactory's main benefits, compared to other batch systems, lie in its virtualization support and firewall friendliness. The tests involved running visual feature extraction from 50 000 anonymized medical images on a small local grid of 20 desktop computers. A comparisons with a Condor based batch system in the same computers is then presented. The performance of GridFactory is found satisfactory. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
