For materials near the phase boundary between weak and strong topological insulators (TIs), their band topology depends on the band alignment, with the inverted (normal) band corresponding to the strong (weak) TI phase. Here, taking the anisotropic transition-metal pentatelluride ZrTe$_5$ as an example, we show that the band inversion manifests itself as a second extremum (band gap) in the layer stacking direction, which can be probed experimentally via magneto-infrared spectroscopy. Specifically, we find that the band anisotropy of ZrTe$_5$ features a slow dispersion in the layer stacking direction, along with an additional set of optical transitions from a band gap away from the Brillouin zone center. Our work identifies ZrTe5 as a strong TI at liquid helium temperature and provides a new perspective in determining band inversion in layered topological materials., Comment: with supplemental materials

Laser-induced femtosecond demagnetization, femtomagnetism, offers a potential route to develop faster magnetic storage devices. It is generally believed that the traditional spin-wave theory, which is developed for thermally driven slow demagnetization, can not explain this rapid demagnetization by design. Here we show that this traditional spin-wave theory, once augmented by laser-induced spin-orbit torque, provides a highly efficient paradigm for demagnetization, by capturing low-energy spin-wave excitation that is absent in existing mechanisms. Our paradigm is different from existing ones, but does not exclude them. Microscopically, we find that optical spin-orbit torque generates massive spin waves across several hundred lattice sites, collapsing the long-range spin-spin correlation within 20 fs. Our finding does not only explain new experiments, but also establishes an alternative paradigm for femtomagnetism. We present a detailed investigation of the specific heat in Ca$_3$(Ru$_{1-x}M_x$)$_2$O$_7$ ($M$ = Ti, Fe, Mn) single crystals. With different dopants and doping levels, three distinct regions are present, including a quasi-2D metallic state with an antiferromagnetic (AFM) order formed by ferromagnetic bilayers (AFM-$b$), a Mott insulating state with G-type AFM order (G-AFM) and a localized state with a mixed AFM-b and G-AFM phase. Our specific heat data provide deep insights into the Mott transitions induced by Ti and Mn dopings. We observed not only an anomalous large mass enhancement but also an additional term in the specific heat i.e. $C\propto T^2$ in the localized region. The $C\propto T^2$ term is most likely due to the long-wavelength excitations with both FM and AFM components. A decrease of Debye temperature is observed in the G-type AFM region, indicating a lattice softening associated with the Mott transition., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

Superatomic molecular orbitals (SAMO) in C60 are ideal building blocks for functional nanostructures. However, imaging them spatially in the gas phase has been unsuccessful. It is found experimentally that if C60 is excited by an 800-nm laser, the photoelectron casts an anisotropic velocity image, but the image becomes isotropic if excited at a 400-nm wavelength. This diffuse image difference has been attributed to electron thermal ionization, but more recent experiments (800 nm) reveal a clear non-diffuse image superimposed on the diffuse image, whose origin remains a mystery. Here we show that the non-diffuse anisotropic image is the precursor of the $f$ SAMO. We predict that four 800-nm photons can directly access the $1f$ SAMO, and with one more photon, can image the orbital, with the photoelectron angular distribution having two maxima at 0$^\circ$ and 180$^\circ$ and two humps separated by 56.5$^\circ$. Since two 400-nm photons only resonantly excite the spherical $1s$ SAMO and four 800-nm photon excite the anisotropic $1f$ SAMO, our finding gives a natural explanation of the non-diffuse image difference, complementing the thermal scenario., Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures. Context. Synthetic model atmosphere calculations are still the most commonly used tool when determining precise stellar parameters and stellar chemical compositions. Besides three-dimensional models that consistently solve for hydrodynamic processes, one-dimensional models that use an approximation for convective energy transport play the major role. Aims. We use modern Balmer-line formation theory as well as spectral energy distribution (SED) measurements for the Sun and Procyon to calibrate the model parameter {\alpha} that describes the efficiency of convection in our 1D models. Convection was calibrated over a significant range in parameter space, reaching from F-K along the main sequence and sampling the turnoff and giant branch over a wide range of metallicities. This calibration was compared to theoretical evaluations and allowed an accurate modeling of stellar atmospheres. Methods. We used Balmer-line fitting and SED fits to determine the convective efficiency parameter {\alpha}. Both methods are sensitive to the structure and temperature stratification of the deeper photosphere. Results. While SED fits do not allow a precise determination of the convective parameter for the Sun and Procyon, they both favor values significantly higher than 1.0. Balmer-line fitting, which we find to be more sensitive, suggests that the convective efficiency parameter {\alpha} is $\approx$ 2.0 for the main sequence and quickly decreases to $\approx$ 1.0 for evolved stars. These results are highly consistent with predictions from 3D models. While the values on the main sequence fit predictions very well, measurements suggest that the decrease of convective efficiency as stars evolve to the giant branch is more dramatic than predicted by models., Comment: 14 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Since the beginning of femtomagnetism, it has been hotly debated how an ultrafast laser pulse can demagnetize a sample and switch its spins within a few hundred femtoseconds, but no consensus has been reached. In this paper, we propose that an ultrafast reduction in the exchange interaction by a femtosecond laser pulse is mainly responsible for demagnetization and spin switching. The key physics is that the dipole selection rule demands two distinctive electron configurations for the ground and excited states and consequently changes the exchange interaction. Although the exchange interaction change is almost instantaneous, its effect on the spin is delayed by the finite spin wave propagation. Consistent with the experimental observation, the delay becomes longer with a stronger exchange interaction pulse. In spin-frustrated systems, the effect of the exchange interaction change is even more dramatic, where the spin can be directly switched from one direction to the other. Therefore, our theory has the potential to explain the essence of major observations in rare-earth transition metal compounds for the last seven years. Ruthenium-based perovskite systems are attractive because their Structural, electronic and magnetic properties can be systematically engineered. SrRuO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ superlattice, with its period consisting of one unit cell each, is very sensitive to strain change. Our first-principles simulations reveal that in the high tensile strain region, it transits from a ferromagnetic (FM) metal to an antiferromagnetic (AFM) insulator with clear tilted octahedra, while in the low strain region, it is a ferromagnetic metal without octahedra tilting. Detailed analyses of three spin-down Ru-t$_{2g}$ orbitals just below the Fermi level reveal that the splitting of these orbitals underlies these dramatic phase transitions, with the rotational force constant of RuO$_6$ octahedron high up to 16 meV/Deg$^2$, 4 times larger than that of TiO$_6$. Differently from nearly all the previous studies, these transitions can be probed optically through the diagonal and off-diagonal dielectric tensor elements. For one percent change in strain, our experimental spin moment change is -0.14$\pm$0.06 $\mu_B$, quantitatively consistent with our theoretical value of -0.1 $\mu_B$., Comment: 3 figures, 1 supplementary material, accepted by Phys. We present magnetic susceptibility and electrical transport measurements of the highly anisotropic compound LaSb$_2$ observing a very broad transition into a clean, consistent with type-I, superconducting state with distinct features of 2 dimensionality. Application of hydrostatic pressure induces a 2- to 3-dimensional crossover evidenced by a reduced anisotropy and transition width. The superconducting transition appears phase fluctuation limited at ambient pressure with fluctuations observed for temperatures greater than 8 times the superconducting critical temperature., Comment: 4 pages with 4 figures and 2 pages of sup. materials which includes 2 figures

We present a quantitative analysis of the low-temperature, high parallel field pairing resonance in ultra-thin superconducting Al films with dimensionless conductance g>>1. In this regime we derive an analytical expression for the tunneling density-of-states spectrum from which a variety of normal-state spin parameters can be extracted. We show that by fitting tunneling data at several supercritical parallel magnetic fields we can determine all of the relevant parameters that have traditionally been obtained via fits to tunneling data in the superconducting phase. These include the spin-orbit scattering rate, the antisymmetric Landau parameter G^0, and the orbital pair-breaking parameter., Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures

We present low temperature tunneling density-of-states measurements in Al films in high parallel magnetic fields. The thickness range of the films, t=6-9 nm, was chosen so that the orbital and Zeeman contributions to their parallel critical fields were comparable. In this quasi-spin paramagnetically limited configuration, the field produces a significant suppression of the gap, and at high fields the gapless state is reached. By comparing measured and calculated tunneling spectra we are able to extract the value of the antisymmetric Fermi-liquid parameter G^0 and thereby deduce the quasiparticle density dependence of the effective parameter G^0_{eff} across the gapless state., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

We present low temperature tunneling density of states measurements of Pauli-limited Al films in which the Zeeman and orbital contributions to the critical field are comparable. We show that films in the thickness range of 6-7 nm exhibit a reentrant parallel critical field transition which is associated with a high entropy superconducting phase, similar to the high entropy solid phase of 3He responsible for the Pomeranchuk effect. This phase is characterized by an excess of states near the Fermi energy so long as the parallel critical field transition remains second order. Theoretical fits to the zero bias tunneling conductance are in good agreement with the data well below the transition but theory deviates significantly near the transition. We report a detailed study of the pairing resonance via tunneling density of states in ultra-thin superconducting Al films in supercritical magnetic fields. Particular emphasis is placed on effects of the perpendicular component of the magnetic field on the resonance energy and magnitude. Though the resonance is broadened and attenuated by $H_\bot$ as expected, its energy is shifted upward linearly with $H_\bot$. Extension of the original theory of the resonance to include strong perpendicular fields shows that at sufficiently large $H_\bot$ the overlap of the broadened resonance tail with the underlying degenerate Fermi sea alters the spectral distribution of the resonance via the exclusion principle. This leads to the shift of the the resonance feature to higher energy., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

We present a detailed study of the effects of interface spin-orbit coupling (ISOC) on the critical field behavior of non-centrosymmetric (NCS), ultra-thin superconducting Be/Au bilayers. Parallel field measurements were made in bilayers with Be thicknesses in the range of 2 - 10 nm and Au coverages of 0.5 nm. Though the Au had no significant effect on the superconducting gap, it produced profound changes in the spin states of the system. In particular, the parallel critical field exceeded the Clogston limit by an order of magnitude in the thinnest films studied. In addition, the parallel critical field unexpectedly scaled as Hc||/\Delta ~ 1/d suggesting that the spin-orbit coupling energy was proportional to Delta/d^2. Tilted field measurements showed that contrary to recent theory, the ISOC induces a large in-plane superconducting susceptibility but only a very small transverse susceptibility.

We report ac susceptibility measurements of polycrystalline CePt_3Si down to 60 mK and in applied fields up to 9 T. In zero field, a full Meissner state emerges at temperatures T/Tc < 0.3, where Tc=0.65 K is the onset transition temperature. Though transport measurements show a relatively high upper critical field Bc2 ~ 4-5 T, the low temperature susceptibility, \chi', is quite fragile to applied field, with \chi' diminishing rapidly in fields of a few kG. Interestingly, the field dependence of \chi' is well described by the power law, 4\pi\chi'=(B/B_c)^{1/2}, where Bc is the field at which the onset of resistance is observed in transport measurements., Comment: 5 figures

Nanostructured La0.67Ca0.33MnO3 (NS-LCMO) was formed by pulsed-laser deposition on the surface of porous Al2O3. The resistance peak temperature (Tp) of the NS-LCMO increases with increasing average thickness of the films, while their Curie temperatures (Tc) remain unchanged. The coercive field of the samples increases with decreasing film thickness and its temperature dependence can be well described by Hc(T) = Hc(0)[1-(T/TB)1/2]. A large magnetoresistance and strong memory effect were observed for the NS-LCMO. The results are discussed in terms of the size effect, Coulomb blockade and magnetic tunneling effect. This work also demonstrates a new way to get nanostructured manganites.

The occurrence and development of phase inhomogeneity in {\rm Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+x}$} single crystals have been investigated by measuring their superconducting transition patterns using a high-sensitivity ac magnetometer. We find that the overdoped {\rm Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+x}$} single crystals, even if they were single-phased immediately after a high-temperature annealing process, show progressively pronounced multiple superconducting transitions with time as they were kept at room temperature in a dry air atmosphere. The results reveal that the oxygen dopants in the crystal are still mobile at room temperature. These dopants tend to re-arrange and thus form different phases, at a characteristic time scale of one or two weeks or so. Moreover, the diamagnetization loops in the newly segregated phase are very weak, presumably due to the existence of additional inhomogeneity down to a nanometer scale. Our results also show that the optimally doped {\rm Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+x}$} crystals seem capable to remain in a single phase with time., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures
