8. Efficacy of orthokeratology lenses in adolescent myopia patients with different diopters

Abstract

AIM: To explore the control effects of wearing orthokeratology lens for 1 a on adolescent myopia patients with different diopters.METHODS: Prospective non-randomized controlled study. A total of 120 adolescent myopic patients(224 eyes), with an average age of 11.00±2.08 years old, who were fitted with orthokeratology lenses in the optometry department of our hospital from November 2022 to May 2023 were collected. There were 3 groups according to the spherical equivalent, including 86 eyes in the group of -0.50--2.00 D, 99 eyes in the group -2.25--4.00 D, and 39 eyes in group -4.25--6.00 D. Patients were followed up for 1 a to observe the changes of uncorrected visual acuity, axial length, corneal curvature, corneal central thickness and corneal endothelial cells density in the three groups after wearing lens for 1 a.RESULTS:A total of 113 cases(212 eyes)were followed up for 1 a, including 82 eyes in the group of -0.50--2.00 D, 95 eyes in the group of -2.25--4.00 D, and 35 eyes in the group of -4.25--6.00 D. There was no statistical difference in corneal central thickness and corneal endothelial cell density among the three groups of patients after wearing lens for 1 a(all P>0.05). Abstract

Background With the continuous development of society and technological innovations, the average life expectancy of human beings has gradually increased, leading to the gradual increase in the number of perimenopausal women. This trend poses a serious challenge to the management of perimenopausal health in the community. Objective To understand the health characteristics and health needs of perimenopausal women in the community, explore the relationship between the two, and provide evidence to support the development and improvement of perimenopausal health management in community health service organisations. Methods Perimenopausal women (n=260) who attended or were accompanied to the Huamu Community Health Service Centre and its subordinate stations in Pudong New Area, Shanghai, from February to March 2023 were selected as study subjects. Questionnaires were used to collect information on the health characteristics of the study subjects (related to physiological stage, social characteristics, disease status, lifestyle, and quality of life), their knowledge of menopause and attitudes toward treatment, as well as their needs for knowledge related to menopause and preventive health care for menopausal diseases. Results Fifty percent (130/260) of perimenopausal women had a current history of chronic disease, 51.9% (135/260) of perimenopausal women had a past history of chronic disease, 73.8% (192/260) of perimenopausal women had fair/poor quality of sleep, 33.5% (87/260) of perimenopausal women did little exercise. 58.5% (152/260) of perimenopausal women were completely unaware or had only heard of menopause, 41.9% (109/260) of perimenopausal women had a negative attitude towards menopause treatment, 45.0% (117/126) of perimenopausal women needed menopause-related knowledge, and 66.6% (173/260) of perimenopausal women needed preventive health care for menopausal diseases. 12. FedGSM: Efficient Federated Learning for LEO Constellations with Gradient Staleness Mitigation

Abstract

Recent advancements in space technology have equipped low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites with the capability to perform complex functions and run AI applications. Federated Learning (FL) on LEO satellites enables collaborative training of a global ML model without the need for sharing large datasets. However, intermittent connectivity between satellites and ground stations can lead to stale gradients and unstable learning, thereby limiting learning performance. In this paper, we propose FedGSM, a novel asynchronous FL algorithm that introduces a compensation mechanism to mitigate gradient staleness. FedGSM leverages the deterministic and time-varying topology of the orbits to offset the negative effects of staleness. Our simulation results demonstrate that FedGSM outperforms state-of-the-art algorithms for both IID and non-IID datasets, underscoring its effectiveness and advantages. Abstract

ObjectiveTo study the prevalence and antimicrobial resistance characteristics of Salmonella enterica serovar typhimurium（S. typhimurium）and monophasic S. typhimurium from clinical patients and food in Henan Province from 2015 to 2022.MethodsThree hundred and ninety-nine strains of Salmonella from food and clinical patients in Henan Province were serotyped according to the Kauffmann White scheme by slide agglutination and multiplex real-time PCR method. Microbroth dilution method was used to test antimicrobial resistance of S. typhimurium. Statistical analysis was carried out using Chi‑square test.ResultsThree hundred and ninety-nine strain were composed of two hundred twenty-five monophasic S. typhimurium （56.39%） and one hundred seventy-four S. typhimurium. The imipenem and trimethoprim/ sulfamethoxazole resistant isolates were found since 2017. The antimicrobial resistance rate of two Salmonella strains to ampicillin， chloramphenicol and tetracycline was higher， reaching more than 50%. Abstract

Early exiting allows instances to exit at different layers according to the estimation of difficulty. Previous works usually adopt heuristic metrics such as the entropy of internal outputs to measure instance difficulty, which suffers from generalization and threshold-tuning. In contrast, learning to exit, or learning to predict instance difficulty is a more appealing way. Though some effort has been devoted to employing such "learn-to-exit" modules, it is still unknown whether and how well the instance difficulty can be learned. As a response, we first conduct experiments on the learnability of instance difficulty, which demonstrates that modern neural models perform poorly on predicting instance difficulty. Based on this observation, we propose a simple-yet-effective Hash-based Early Exiting approach (HashEE) that replaces the learn-to-exit modules with hash functions to assign each token to a fixed exiting layer. Different from previous methods, HashEE requires no internal classifiers nor extra parameters, and therefore is more efficient. Experimental results on classification, regression, and generation tasks demonstrate that HashEE can achieve higher performance with fewer FLOPs and inference time compared with previous state-of-the-art early exiting methods., Comment: Accepted to Findings of ACL 2022

Abstract

Supersized pre-trained language models have pushed the accuracy of various natural language processing (NLP) tasks to a new state-of-the-art (SOTA). Rather than pursuing the reachless SOTA accuracy, more and more researchers start paying attention on model efficiency and usability. Different from accuracy, the metric for efficiency varies across different studies, making them hard to be fairly compared. To that end, this work presents ELUE (Efficient Language Understanding Evaluation), a standard evaluation, and a public leaderboard for efficient NLP models. ELUE is dedicated to depict the Pareto Frontier for various language understanding tasks, such that it can tell whether and how much a method achieves Pareto improvement. Along with the benchmark, we also release a strong baseline, ElasticBERT, which allows BERT to exit at any layer in both static and dynamic ways. We demonstrate the ElasticBERT, despite its simplicity, outperforms or performs on par with SOTA compressed and early exiting models. With ElasticBERT, the proposed ELUE has a strong Pareto Frontier and makes a better evaluation for efficient NLP models., Comment: Accepted to the main conference of NAACL-2022
