This article discusses the evolution and diversity of secondary cell walls (SCWs) in seed plants. The study used cryoSEM to analyze macrofibrils in 33 different angiosperm and gymnosperm species. The results showed that angiosperms generally have narrower macrofibrils compared to gymnosperms, but there are exceptions. The findings provide insights into wood nanostructure and cell wall composition, which can be useful for selecting or engineering desirable wood properties and improving carbon sequestration in plantation forests. The study also examines the evolution of macrofibril size in seed plants, specifically focusing on angiosperms and gymnosperms. The researchers found that large macrofibrils are characteristic of gymnosperms, while small macrofibrils are characteristic of angiosperms. However, they also discovered an intermediate macrofibril size in the Liriodendron genus. The researchers speculate that this may be due to differences in cell wall composition or environmental factors. The aim of this study is to apply a new approach to the quantitative analysis of the formation of gaseous products generated during the thermochemical conversion of wood waste samples of different fineness by using thermogravimetric analysis with mass spectrometry (TGA‐MS). Profiles of the release of gaseous components in the process of thermochemical conversion of wood samples were obtained based on data from the combined use of mass spectrometry and thermogravimetry. The resulting mass spectrometric data were processed according to the proposed methodology and the characteristics of the released gases were noted. Carbon Dioxide Removals (CDR) and Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) have received a lot of attention as a tool to mitigate climate change and reach climate neutrality. Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) is seen as one of the more promising CDRs, and from 2026, the Danish utility Ørsted is establishing the first BECCS plants in Denmark. We present a case study of BECCS by installing CCS at a biomass‐fired CHP plant and the aim is to quantify the CDR potential and carbon dynamics of the BECCS system. Moreover, the study aims to quantify the emissions related to capturing and store CO2. The GHG emissions from CCS including heat, electricity, transport and storage are approximately 100 kgCO2/t stored CO2 and the carbon payback time of the BECCS system is 3–4 years relative to leaving the wood in the forest or at processing industries. The main driver of the payback time is the additional use of biomass to operate CCS which shifts the timing of CO2 emissions more towards the present. The additional biomass use also increases supply chain emissions, and on top of that, only 90% of the direct CO2 emissions from the CHP plant are captured. The study illustrates the importance of temporal scope in assessing the CDR potential of BECCS. With continuous use of biomass, GHG emissions are 207 kgCO2/t stored CO2 in year 1 and −742 kgCO2/t stored CO2 in year 99. This study reveals inconsistencies in the assessment of the CDR potential of BECCS in the literature. There is a considerable need for further research within this field to assess how BECCS can contribute to mitigating climate change and on the appropriate scale of BECCS deployment. Earth ovens are a ubiquitous feature of eastern North America, used throughout many cultures and periods, leaving a highly visible signature of habitational life. This study focusses on one of the four uniquely outsized earth ovens from the center of a woodhenge at Hopewell Mound Group, the type site of the Hopewell culture. Cleaned of artifacts and fire-cracked rock, this feature required specialized analysis to shed light on its function: macrobotanical methods of seed identification and wood charcoal analysis along with phytolith and soil micromorphological analysis. These analyses create a holistic picture of the earth oven, the woodhenge, and the nature of feasting and ritual at Hopewell Mound Group, along with a snapshot of the paleoenvironment. Results show ritual use of ash wood (Fraxinus sp.), Eastern Agricultural Complex seeds seasonally timed with a summer solstice ritual, and grass leaf phytoliths deposited deeper than the surrounding natural strata. Wood is known for its complex hygroscopic properties. Previous studies show that both the temperature-dependency and the hysteresis in sorption should be included in the physical models, if the most accurate results are desired from simulations of building assemblies with wood-based materials. Literature is scarce on the topic, where the significance of these aspects on the reliability of mould-risk assessments is inspected. Exterior walls with glass wool insulation and LDF-sheathing were studied by using two different models with previously measured material data. Over 300 hygrothermal simulations were carried out, where mould-indices were computed on the warm side of the sheathing. According to both conventional and more sophisticated model, the studied walls perform well in cold climate if no driving rain leaks in. Temperature-dependent and hysteretic model yields slightly smaller mould-indices in general, but for certain leaky cases the difference is significant, which indicates the importance of sophisticated sorption-properties in modelling. Background: Wood carbon fractions (CFs)—the proportion of dry woody biomass comprised of elemental carbon (C)—are a key component of forest C estimation protocols and studies. Traditionally, a wood CF of 50% has been assumed in forest C estimation protocols, but recent studies have specifically quantified differences in wood CFs across several different forest biomes and taxonomic divisions, negating the need for generic wood CF assumptions. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), in its 2006 "Guidelines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories", published its own multitiered system of protocols for estimating forest C stocks, which included wood CFs that (1) were based on the best available literature (at the time) and (2) represented a significant improvement over the generic 50% wood CF assumption. However, a considerable number of new studies on wood CFs have been published since 2006, providing more accurate, robust, and spatially- and taxonomically- specific wood CFs for use in forest C estimation. Main text: We argue that the IPCC's recommended wood CFs and those in many other forest C estimation models and protocols (1) differ substantially from, and are less robust than, wood CFs derived from recently published data-rich studies; and (2) may lead to nontrivial errors in forest C estimates, particularly for countries that rely heavily on Tier 1 forest C methods and protocols (e.g., countries of the Global South with large expanses of tropical forests). Based on previous studies on this topic, we propose an alternative set of refined wood CFs for use in multiscale forest C estimation, and propose a novel decision-making framework for integrating species- and location-specific wood CFs into forest C estimation models. Conclusion: The refined wood CFs that we present in this commentary may be used by the IPCC to update its recommended wood CFs for use in forest C estimation. Purpose: Wood comprises different cell types, such as fibers, tracheids and vessels, defining its properties. Studying cells' shape, size, and arrangement in microscopy images is crucial for understanding wood characteristics. Typically, this involves macerating (soaking) samples in a solution to separate cells, then spreading them on slides for imaging with a microscope that covers a wide area, capturing thousands of cells. However, these cells often cluster and overlap in images, making the segmentation difficult and time-consuming using standard image-processing methods. Results: In this work, we developed an automatic deep learning segmentation approach that utilizes the one-stage YOLOv8 model for fast and accurate segmentation and characterization of macerated fiber and vessel form aspen trees in microscopy images. The model can analyze 32,640 x 25,920 pixels images and demonstrate effective cell detection and segmentation, achieving a mAP 0.5 - 0.95 of 78 %. To assess the model's robustness, we examined fibers from a genetically modified tree line known for longer fibers. The outcomes were comparable to previous manual measurements. Additionally, we created a user-friendly web application for image analysis and provided the code for use on Google Colab. Conclusion: By leveraging YOLOv8's advances, this work provides a deep learning solution to enable efficient quantification and analysis of wood cells suitable for practical applications. Summary: Wood formation, which occurs mainly through secondary xylem development, is important not only for supplying raw material for the 'ligno‐chemical' industry but also for driving the storage of carbon. However, the complex mechanisms underlying the promotion of xylem formation remain to be elucidated. Here, we found that overexpression of Auxin‐Regulated Gene involved in Organ Size (ARGOS) in hybrid poplar 84 K (Populus alba × Populus tremula var. glandulosa) enlarged organ size. In particular, PagARGOS promoted secondary growth of stems with increased xylem formation. To gain further insight into how PagARGOS regulates xylem development, we further carried out yeast two‐hybrid screening and identified that the auxin transporter WALLS ARE THIN1 (WAT1) interacts with PagARGOS. Overexpression of PagARGOS up‐regulated WAT1, activating a downstream auxin response promoting cambial cell division and xylem differentiation for wood formation. Moreover, overexpressing PagARGOS caused not only higher wood yield but also lower lignin content compared with wild‐type controls. The biosynthesis of cellulose, lignin, and hemicelluloses in plant secondary cell walls (SCWs) is regulated by a hierarchical transcriptional regulatory network. This network features orthologous transcription factors shared between poplar and Arabidopsis, highlighting a foundational similarity in their genetic regulation. However, knowledge on the discrepant behavior of the transcriptional‐level molecular regulatory mechanisms between poplar and Arabidopsis remains limited. In this study, we investigated the function of PagMYB128 during wood formation and found it had broader impacts on SCW formation compared to its Arabidopsis ortholog, AtMYB103. Transgenic poplar trees overexpressing PagMYB128 exhibited significantly enhanced xylem development, with fiber cells and vessels displaying thicker walls, and an increase in the levels of cellulose, lignin, and hemicelluloses in the wood. In contrast, plants with dominant repression of PagMYB128 demonstrated the opposite phenotypes. RNA sequencing and reverse transcription – quantitative polymerase chain reaction showed that PagMYB128 could activate SCW biosynthetic gene expression, and chromatin immunoprecipitation along with yeast one‐hybrid, and effector–reporter assays showed this regulation was direct. Further analysis revealed that PagSND1 (SECONDARY WALL‐ASSOCIATED NAC‐DOMAIN PROTEIN1) directly regulates PagMYB128 but not cell wall metabolic genes, highlighting the pivotal role of PagMYB128 in the SND1‐driven regulatory network for wood development, thereby creating a feedforward loop in SCW biosynthesis. Wood modification (by thermal or chemical treatment) helps to improve the dimensional stability of wood and enhance its resistance to biological agents. Beech wood is non-durable and exposure in exterior settings dramatically shortens its service life. To determine the full potential of beech wood for advanced applications, a better understanding of the chemical changes induced by modification is needed. Two chemical treatments (acetylation and melamine formaldehyde resin impregnation) and three thermal treatments (heating to 180, 200 and 220 °C) were performed on beech wood. The modification effect was examined based on (i) molecular changes in functional groups by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR); (ii) extractive content; and (iii) pH changes. Moreover, the explanation of these changes was supported by the FTIR-analysis of isolated main wood components (cellulose, holocellulose and lignin) from the modified wood. The high temperatures applied to samples during thermal modification promoted the deacetylation and degradation of hemicelluloses. Hemicelluloses were targeted also by acetic anhydride and melamine resin, the bonding of which was confirmed by FTIR analysis. The formation of fewer methylene bridges affected the properties of the melamine network. This observation suggests the need to determine optimal curing conditions in future research, to reduce melamine-wood hydrophilicity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study evaluated two fundamental assumptions about the geometry of the wood cell wall to develop a mechanistic characterization of wood behavior at the scale of wood structural components. This paper used a three-step homogenization scheme implemented through homogenization techniques and finite-element analyses to evaluate a multilayered cell wall and a simplified single-layer method. Both earlywood and latewood geometries were considered. A three-part sensitivity analysis assessed the influence of wood constituent proportions, microfibril angle, and cellulose crystallinity on cell wall stiffness. Sensitivity to constituent ratios was evaluated through a Monte Carlo simulation of 1,000 sampled points and correlation analysis. Sensitivity to microfibril angle and cellulose crystallinity was evaluated through parametric characterization. The investigation found that both methods provided an accurate assessment of wood stiffness when compared with experimentally determined values. Care should be taken when modeling higher densities of wood, and use of either method in higher order models should be determined by the resolution of input data and computational needs. In this study, the stress distribution within the cell wall layers and the microstructural response under high-intensity microwave (HIMW) treatment were investigated. Finite-element models were developed for both single tracheid and multicellular structures, considering the influence of the saturated vapour pressure. The findings showed uniform vapour pressure caused expansion and deformation of the tracheid layers, with the radial wall deforming slightly more than the tangential wall due to differences in microfibril angle (MFA) and elastic properties. Despite its thinness, the S3 layer, with a wide MFA, played a pivotal role in supporting the saturated vapour pressure within the cell lumen under HIMW treatment, effectively constraining lateral cell-wall deformation. In contrast, the S2 layer, being the thickest, exhibited lower lateral elasticity and sustained damage at the interfaces with the S3 and S1 layers during the expansion and recovery stages. The multicellular simulation demonstrated that earlywood cells experienced larger deformations than latewood cells and revealed a negative correlation between the cell-wall thickness and deformation. The simulation results were validated through the microscopic analysis of the wood topography after HIMW treatment. Funerary cremations in Roman times were important rites of passage that involved the use of fire to accompany the dead into the afterlife. In the present study, we investigated the wood fuel that was used to build cremation pyres and the foodstuffs involved in offerings and funerary feasts in a necropolis of Barcino (present-day Barcelona), dated to the 1st century CE and located at the Sant Antoni Market site. Our approach began with the analysis of wood charcoal and fruit/seed remains, which were preserved over time through carbonisation. These archaeobotanical remains offer valuable insights into the selection of woody species and the condition of wood logs used for cremations. Additionally, they shed light on the food composition of offerings and feasts in this area of the Mediterranean coast, where data on such practices are scarce. The anthracological analysis of different combustion structures revealed that the principal taxon used for the stacks was evergreen oak, with deciduous oak playing a significant role during the initial use of the necropolis. Dendro-anthracological analysis indicated that medium to large diameters wood logs of deciduous oak obtained from mature individuals were commonly employed. Moreover, charcoal analysis suggested the use of pruning remains from fruit trees such as olive, grapevine, walnut, plums, and members of the apple family, providing evidence of arboriculture practices in the city. Additionally, various minor woody species (Aleppo and mountain pines, juniper, cypress, mastic, and rockroses) may have had several functions, including symbolic sensory aspects relating to smell and good flammability, the constitution of small objects or furniture placed on the stack (boxwood), and fire kindling or decoration (mastic, rockroses, honeysuckle, and laurustinus). Carpological analysis indicated that the most abundant offerings and/or feast remains consisted primarily of cultivated fruits such as figs, walnuts, and grapes, while pulses and cereals were comparatively scarce or absent. Finally, a noteworthy quantity of Arbutus berry remains was recorded, marking the first occurrence of such findings in similar Roman contexts to date. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Paleoclimate reconstructions from the Holocene are important for defining baseline conditions in order to interpret and contextualize the effects of modern climate change. Such records are particularly lacking for Siberia, a region that represents ~ 50% of the Arctic. In addition, the majority of proxy-based paleoclimate reconstructions for the Holocene represent mean annual conditions, and few quantify winter temperature, which is particularly important for predicting the effects of global warming in Arctic environments. Here we provide the first quantitative proxy reconstruction of precipitation and temperature for both summer and winter for 3000 years ago via novel high-resolution intra-annual carbon and oxygen isotope measurements across annual growth rings of fossil wood mummified within the permafrost of far northeastern Siberia. We found that the site experienced greater precipitation year-round (~ 10% increase in summer and ~ 30% increase in winter), cooler summer temperatures, and warmer winter temperatures, compared with today. Our findings indicate that warmer winter temperatures (+ 3.0 °C above early twentieth century values) in the Arctic 3000 years ago drove higher mean annual temperature by up to 1 °C, despite the existence of cooler summers, a similar phenomenon to what is observed within today's Arctic environments, and past intervals of extreme global warmth. Summary: Forests make immense contributions to societies in the form of ecological services and sustainable industrial products. However, they face major challenges to their viability and economic use due to climate change and growing biotic and economic threats, for which recombinant DNA (rDNA) technology can sometimes provide solutions. But the application of rDNA technologies to forest trees faces major social and biological obstacles that make its societal acceptance a 'wicked' problem without straightforward solutions. We discuss the nature of these problems, and the social and biological innovations that we consider essential for progress. As case studies of biological challenges, we focus on studies of modifications in wood chemistry and transformation efficiency. We call for major innovations in regulations, and the dissolution of method‐based market barriers, that together could lead to greater research investments, enable wide use of field studies, and facilitate the integration of rDNA‐modified trees into conventional breeding programs. Without near‐term adoption of such innovations, rDNA‐based solutions will be largely unavailable to help forests adapt to the growing stresses from climate change and the proliferation of forest pests, nor will they be available to provide economic and environmental benefits from expanded use of wood and related bioproducts as part of an expanding bioeconomy. Based on the domain reduction method, this study employs an SEM-FEM hybrid workflow which integrates the advantages of the spectral element method (SEM) for flexible and highly efficient simulation of seismic wave propagation in a three-dimensional (3D) regional-scale geophysics model and the finite element method (FEM) for fine simulation of structural response including soil-structure interaction, and performs a physics-based simulation from initial fault rupture on an ancient wood structure. After verification of the hybrid workflow, a large-scale model of an ancient wood structure in the Beijing area, The Tower of Buddhist Incense, is established and its responses under the 1665 Tongxian earthquake and the 1730 Yiheyuan earthquake are simulated. The results from the simulated ground motion and seismic response of the wood structure under the two earthquakes demonstrate that this hybrid workflow can be employed to efficiently provide insight into the relationships between geophysical parameters and the structural response, and is of great significance toward accurate input for seismic simulation of structures under specific site and fault conditions. Summary: Woody plants display some photosynthetic activity in stems, but the biological role of stem photosynthesis and the specific contributions of bark and wood to carbon uptake and oxygen evolution remain poorly understood.We aimed to elucidate the functional characteristics of chloroplasts in stems of different ages in Fraxinus ornus. Our investigation employed diverse experimental approaches, including microsensor technology to assess oxygen production rates in whole stem, bark, and wood separately. Additionally, we utilized fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM) to characterize the relative abundance of photosystems I and II (PSI : PSII chlorophyll ratio) in bark and wood.Our findings revealed light‐induced increases in O2 production in whole stem, bark, and wood. We present the radial profile of O2 production in F. ornus stems, demonstrating the capability of stem chloroplasts to perform light‐dependent electron transport. Younger stems exhibited higher light‐induced O2 production and dark respiration rates than older ones.While bark emerged as the primary contributor to net O2 production under light conditions, our data underscored that wood chloroplasts are also photosynthetically active. The FLIM analysis unveiled a lower PSI abundance in wood than in bark, suggesting stem chloroplasts are not only active but also acclimate to the spectral composition of light reaching inner compartments. Summary: The illegal harvest of timber and the subsequent production of charcoal have been contributing to the deforestation of the Brazilian Amazon and its degradation. Analysis of wood anatomy is a well-established tool used to detect illegally harvested wood and is commonly employed in the control of illegal forestry activities. This study aimed to contribute to a database used for the anatomical identification of wood and charcoal from tree species commonly harvested and marketed in the Amazon. The macro- and microscopic characteristics of wood and charcoal for 15 forest species were described. Characteristics that could be described in detail, such as vessel grouping, type of axial parenchyma, and in some cases, perforation plates and uniseriate rays, are fundamental to the identification of wood and charcoal that are illegally, or even legally, marketed. The study aids in the monitoring of the illegal marketing of wood and charcoal and will contribute to the construction of a database and reference collections that will be available for research, training, and use by forest managers, anatomists and anthracologists who study both wood and charcoal. Emulsion explosives exhibit strong nonideal detonation behavior, which provides a challenge for accurate numerical modeling. We present a nonideal detonation model based on the Wood–Kirkwood detonation theory and EXPLO5, capable of modeling the effect of the charge diameter on steady-state detonation velocity. The elements of the model are calibrated based on experimental data for four different emulsion explosives. It was demonstrated that both simple pressure-dependent and Kirby and Chan's two-step reaction rate models can satisfactorily reproduce the detonation velocity–charge diameter data of unconfined charges. Arboform, also known as "liquid wood," represents an innovative and sustainable approach in material science. It is an overview of Arboform technology, its manufacturing process, properties, applications, and environmental implications. Arboform is derived from lignin, a natural polymer abundant in wood, and is produced through a patented liquefaction process that transforms lignin into a moldable thermoplastic material. Unlike plastics, it offers several advantages, including biodegradability, low carbon footprint, and renewable sourcing. Its unique composition endows Arboform with desirable mechanical properties, such as high tensile strength, low thermal expansion, and excellent dimensional stability. Its versatility lends to a wide range of applications and its biocompatibility and non-toxic nature make it suitable for use in food packaging and medical devices, addressing growing concerns over plastic pollution and human health impacts. Despite its promising attributes, challenges remain in scaling up production, optimizing material properties, and ensuring cost competitiveness with conventional plastics. Nevertheless, Arboform represents a promising avenue for transitioning towards a more sustainable and circular economy, offering a renewable alternative to petroleum-based plastics and contributing to the mitigation of environmental degradation associated with conventional plastic production and disposal. Plastic recyclates can be contaminated with a variety of impurities due to their previous life, which cannot always be perfectly separated in recycling pretreatment steps. Hence melt filtration is an important step in reprocessing plastic recyclates to achieve material of sufficient purity, but it also leads to more stress on the material due to higher pressures and longer processing times. In our study, we investigated the influence of typical particulate impurities as may occur in recyclate on the mechanical and rheological properties of ABS. Even low amounts of contaminations lowered the key properties. Melt filtration of post‐consumer ABS recyclate with different mesh size melt screens showed little improvement of mechanical properties, but longer idle times and loss of material. Damage to the material caused by finer filtration could be shown by thermal measurements. Abstract Background Dehydration of plant tissues caused by water stress affects the dynamics of the lateral cambium, the rate of cell division and differentiation in cell lumen size, wall thickness and wall chemical properties. Based on evidence that ongoing climate change projects longer and more intense water stress conditions, forest dynamics and decline are predicted to be affected by increases in drought intensity and frequency. To verify the interaction of these phenomena, we described the modifications in the anatomy and mineral contents of annual growth rings of Araucaria araucana seedlings subjected to water stress treatments, using X-ray densitometry and X-ray fluorescence techniques. Results Severe water stress conditions during the growing period produced narrower tree rings, with reduced cell lumen size (5–7 µm) and higher tracheid reinforcement factor values, but with lower wood density. Plants subjected to moderate water stress generated intra-annual density fluctuations coinciding with periods of decreased soil moisture. Under the precept that the essential nutrients play a relevant role in the functioning of trees, we found evidence of element allocation and concentration in response to drought. Calcium and phosphorus concentration increased significantly as stress becomes more severe, but with small differences between early- and latewood. On the contrary, potassium and sulfur presented lower values in the most stressed plants, and manganese had the lowest values only for moderate water stress. Finally, S/Ca and K/Ca molar ratios decreased, while Ca/Mn increased as stress becomes more severe. Conclusions Our findings suggested that A. araucana seedlings invested resources aimed at increasing structural components of the cell wall to prevent cavitation. This would maintain metabolism and cell growth even in unfavorable environmental conditions. Furthermore, the imbalance of manganese and calcium and their consequent ratio (Ca/Mn) could be linked to early adaptive signals to avoid dieback.

Emerald ash borer (EAB, Agrilus planipennis) is an invasive killer of ash trees (Fraxinus spp.) in North America and Europe. Ash species co‐evolved with EAB in their native range in Asia are mostly resistant, although the precise mechanism(s) remain unclear. Very little is also known about EAB or ash tree microbiomes. We performed the first joint comparison of phloem mycobiome and metabolites between a native and a nonnative ash species, infested and uninfested with EAB, in conjunction with investigation of larval mycobiome. Phloem mycobiome communities differed between the tree species, but both were unaffected by EAB infestation. Several indicator taxa in the larval gut shared a similarly high relative abundance only with the native host trees. Widely targeted metabolomics revealed 24 distinct metabolites in native trees and 53 metabolites in nonnative trees, respectively, that differed in relative content between infested and uninfested trees only in one species. Interestingly, four metabolites shared a strong relationship with the phloem mycobiomes, majority of which affected only the native trees. Collectively, our results demonstrate a complex interplay between host tree chemistry and mycobiome, and suggest the shared relationships between the mycobiomes of the native host tree and EAB may reflect their shared co‐evolution. Systematic attribution of the wood samples collected in 1830 by Pyotr Kostromitinov, the Manager of Fort Ross, a Russian settlement on the Pacific coast of northern California, has been carried out. As some wood samples belong to the taxa that had not been described at the time of their collection, their labels provide interesting evidence for the first steps of botanical exploration of an exotic flora by the Russian colonists who were not professional naturalists. Particularly, Garrya has been recognized by them as Viburnum, Lyonothamnus as Arbutus, and Torreya as Taxus. In contrast, different species of Ceanothus have been referred not only to this genus, but also to Rhamnus and Laurus. The meanings of some Russian vernacular plant names mentioned in the published historical documents have been clarified. For instance, lavr (laurel) was used not only for California laurel Umbellularia californica, but also for some Ceanothus species (probably C. velutinus). The reference of the vernacular name chaga to Sequoia sempervirens has been confirmed. Unlike most early wood collections, Pyotr Kostromitinov’s samples are made of thin stems and branches with no conspicuous surfaces showing their wood appearance. Such pieces are hardly suitable for demonstration of aesthetic or technical properties of timber. Pyotr Kostromitinov’s samples likely represent one of the earliest cases of collecting wood as objects of particular interest for botany and, more generally, for natural history. Recent advances in wood treatment include the use of eco-friendly coatings to improve the wood's dimensional stability and appearance. Assessing coating performance during its service life is critical for establishing a knowledge base for product optimization. Numerous approaches, including microimaging, are available for analyzing coating behavior. In addition to conventional microscopic techniques, high-resolution X-ray microtomography is a tool that provides nondestructive imaging of coatings and their substrates. In this study, we performed two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) visualization of tomographic reconstruction images of two coating types, spray and brush, to observe and assess the distribution of several commercial Japanese coating materials in Fagus crenata. X-ray images and plot profiles were used to determine the penetration depths and thicknesses of coatings. Each coated sample was scanned using X-ray microtomography, which allowed successful visualization and quantification of the coating penetration depth. The production of orange (Citrus sinensis) generates many residues, and the few that are used are usually by-products of the fruit juice processing industry. Among the residues, wood is potentially advantageous for use in bioenergy, but with few records in the literature. In this sense, this study sought to evaluate the feasibility of using orange wood for energy purposes by performing chemical characterization, immediate analysis, FTIR, calorific value, thermogravimetry and bulk and energetic densities for three compositions: 100% trunk (100T), 90% trunk + 10% bark (90T10B) and 100% bark (100B). 100T showed a higher fixed carbon content (16.76%) and equality with 90T10B in lignin, holocellulose, useful calorific value and volatile materials. 100B presented higher extractives and ash contents of 19.67% and 10.35%, respectively. The FTIR spectra and thermogravimetric curves were similar in 100T and 90T10B. 100B showed more stages of degradation and a higher incidence of peaks in the range 780–612 cm−1. The bulk density was equal in 100T and 90T10B, but the energy density was higher in 100T (6.16 Gj.m−3). 100T and 90T10B are good options for bioenergy and the chemical composition and thermal degradation of 100B point to new investigations in this composition. Cangjie Temple was built to commemorate Cangjie, the legendary inventor of Chinese characters. It stands as one of the few remaining temples in China dedicated to the invention and creation of writing. In this study, the material properties of wooden paintings from the Cangjie temple were characterized using Polarized Light Microscopy (PLM), Scanning Electron Microscopy coupled with Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), Micro-confocal Raman Spectroscopy, X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), and Pyrolysis-Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (Py-GC/MS). It was confirmed that the pigments of the paintings included cinnabar, lapis lazuli, lead white, Paris green, and carbon black. The proteinaceous glue was used as an adhesive in the pigment samples, with tung oil likely being utilized as a primer for the wooden structures before painting. This study not only provides valuable data support for the conservation and restoration of the architectural features of Cangjie Temple but also provides useful reference for the maintenance and inheritance of similar ancient buildings. The size of the wood plays a crucial role in determining its ultimate application. In order to break through the dimensions of natural wood, multiple pieces of wood are often bonded together with adhesives to form larger sizes. The physical and chemical properties of adhesives are different from those of natural wood, and this difference often leads to failure of the adhesive bonding interface. Herein, an aqueous solution of dissolved cellulose has been used as an adhesive to bond wood. The regenerated cellulose produced by recrystallization combines the wood fibers that originally existed on the wood surface cell wall. The resulting bonding wood interface consists of densely packed regenerated cellulose and wood cellulose fibers, which possess strong hydrogen bonds and physical entanglements. The shear strength has surpassed those of typical bio‐based adhesives and commercial adhesives. The same composition as natural wood endows this bonding interface with physical and chemical properties similar to natural wood such as weatherability. Bonding wood with this cellulose aqueous solution as an adhesive reduces the dependence on petrochemical‐based adhesives, and this facile and pressureless bonding strategy offers a promising route to manufacture sustainable wood composites with robust bonding interfaces. Pentachlorophenol (PCP) is a manmade chemical that is widely present in the environment and is mostly used as a wood preservative. Therefore, to conduct remediation studies, it is imperative to determine the most effective PCP analytical technique. PCP can be analyzed using a variety of analytical tools, including non-destructible methods like X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF) and electrochemical sensors (EC), destructible tools like gas chromatography (GC), thin layer chromatography (TLC), colorimetry, ultraviolet–visible and infrared spectroscopy (UV–vis/IR), and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). the colorimetric approach is less recommended because of its low sensitivity and precision, whereas TLC offers superior recovery rates and precision but is expensive, takes longer, and is unable to resolve complicated combinations. Higher recovery rates, sensitivity, precision, and superior separation are all offered by HPLC; however, its effectiveness is impacted by time, money, and solvent compatibility. The most favored destructible approach is GC because it is efficient in terms of both cost and time and offers superior precision and separation. Although XRF is frequently used in the wood industry to test PCP in treated wood and treating solutions, scientific research has avoided using it because of its high cost and ability to identify chemicals based only on their elemental composition—in the case of PCP, it is chloride. Among all methods, EC is shown to be more dependable than the other methods listed because it is extremely specialized, less expensive, and offers a faster response. It is possible to make more changes to the current analytical techniques, such as enhancing extraction techniques, creating a universal HPLC column, developing more affordable and high-precision EC electrodes, and evaluating a larger variety of samples from different matrices. Wood is the water conducting tissue of tree stems. Like most angiosperm trees, poplar wood contains water-conducting vessel elements whose functional properties affect water transport and growth rates, as well as susceptibility to embolism and hydraulic failure during water stress and drought. Here we used a unique hybrid poplar pedigree carrying genomically characterized chromosomal insertions and deletions to undertake a systems genomics analysis of vessel traits. We assayed gene expression in wood forming tissues from clonal replicates of genotypes covering dosage quantitative trait loci with insertions and deletions, genotypes with extreme vessel trait phenotypes, and control genotypes. A gene co-expression analysis was used to assign genes to modules, which were then used in integrative analyses to identify modules associated with traits, to identify putative molecular and cellular processes associatedwith eachmodule, and finally to identify candidate genes using multiple criteria including dosage responsiveness. These analyses identified known processes associated with vessel traits including stress response, abscisic acid and cell wall biosynthesis, and in addition identified previously unexplored processes including cell cycle and protein ubiquitination. Background: Dehydration of plant tissues caused by water stress affects the dynamics of the lateral cambium, the rate of cell division and differentiation in cell lumen size, wall thickness and wall chemical properties. Based on evidence that ongoing climate change projects longer and more intense water stress conditions, forest dynamics and decline are predicted to be affected by increases in drought intensity and frequency. To verify the interaction of these phenomena, we described the modifications in the anatomy and mineral contents of annual growth rings of Araucaria araucana seedlings subjected to water stress treatments, using X-ray densitometry and X-ray fluorescence techniques. Results: Severe water stress conditions during the growing period produced narrower tree rings, with reduced cell lumen size (5–7 µm) and higher tracheid reinforcement factor values, but with lower wood density. Plants subjected to moderate water stress generated intra-annual density fluctuations coinciding with periods of decreased soil moisture. Under the precept that the essential nutrients play a relevant role in the functioning of trees, we found evidence of element allocation and concentration in response to drought. Calcium and phosphorus concentration increased significantly as stress becomes more severe, but with small differences between early- and latewood. On the contrary, potassium and sulfur presented lower values in the most stressed plants, and manganese had the lowest values only for moderate water stress. Finally, S/Ca and K/Ca molar ratios decreased, while Ca/Mn increased as stress becomes more severe. Conclusions: Our findings suggested that A. araucana seedlings invested resources aimed at increasing structural components of the cell wall to prevent cavitation. This would maintain metabolism and cell growth even in unfavorable environmental conditions. Exposure to wildfire smoke is associated with both acute and chronic cardiopulmonary illnesses, which are of special concern for wildland firefighters who experience repeated exposure to wood smoke. It is necessary to better understand the underlying pathophysiology by which wood smoke exposure increases pulmonary disease burdens in this population. We hypothesize that wood smoke exposure produces pulmonary dysfunction, lung inflammation, and gene expression profiles associated with future pulmonary complications. Male Long-Evans rats were intermittently exposed to smoldering eucalyptus wood smoke at 2 concentrations, low (11.0 ± 1.89 mg/m3) and high (23.7 ± 0.077 mg/m3), over a 2-week period. Whole-body plethysmography was measured intermittently throughout. Lung tissue and lavage fluid were collected 24 h after the final exposure for transcriptomics and metabolomics. Increasing smoke exposure upregulated neutrophils and select cytokines in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid. In total, 3446 genes were differentially expressed in the lungs of rats in the high smoke exposure and only 1 gene in the low smoke exposure (Cd151). Genes altered in the high smoke group reflected changes to the Eukaryotic Initiation Factor 2 stress and oxidative stress responses, which mirrored metabolomics analyses. xMWAS-integrated analysis revealed that smoke exposure significantly altered pathways associated with oxidative stress, lung morphogenesis, and tumor proliferation pathways. These results indicate that intermittent, 2-week exposure to eucalyptus wood smoke leads to transcriptomic and metabolic changes in the lung that may predict future lung disease development. Uganda hosts Africa's largest refugee population, exceeding 1.5 million in early 2023. While commended for its progressive refugee policies, which grant freedom of movement and work opportunities, the influx of displaced people since 2015 has strained shared environmental resources, including slow-growing indigenous trees utilized for construction and fuel. Efforts to preserve indigenous biodiversity have promoted the growth and use of faster-growing exotic tree species. However, local communities often favor indigenous trees as fuel sources, despite limited evidence supporting their superiority. This study assessed fuel properties of selected indigenous and exotic tree species in Lamwo District, Northern Uganda. Laboratory analysis of wood samples revealed no significant differences in moisture content, fixed carbon, volatile matter, or Fuel Value Index (FVI) among the species. The study therefore recommends promoting fast-growing exotic species like Eucalyptus grandis, Caliandra calothyrsus, and Senna siamea, urging international agencies, NGOs, and community-led organizations to leverage the findings for behavior change campaigns. This approach would facilitate species regeneration, alleviate pressure on natural forests, and supplement Uganda's investment strategy in Modern Energy Cooking Services (MECS) such as LPG and solar e-cooking technologies. The study examines the unique production process of Aceto Balsamico Tradizionale di Modena PDO (ABTM), emphasizing its complex phases and the impact of raw materials and artisanal skill on its flavor characteristics. Analytical tests focused on the volatile composition of vinegars from different wood barrels at different aging stages, using solid-phase micro-extraction (SPME) coupled with gas chromatography, either with mass spectrometry (GC/MS) or flame ionization detector (FID). Multivariate analysis, including principal component analysis (PCA), was employed to investigate the presence of peculiarities among the volatile profiles of samples of different barrel origin. The research focuses on characterizing the volatile composition of vinegars sourced from individual wood barrels, such as Cherry, Chestnut, Mulberry, Juniper, and Oak. Although it was not possible to identify molecules directly connected to the woody essence, some similarities emerged between vinegar samples from mulberry and cherry barrels and between those of juniper and oak. The former group is characterized by analytes with high molecular weights, such as furfural and esters, while the latter group shows more intense peaks for ethyl benzoate. Moreover, ethyl benzoate appears to predominantly influence samples from chestnut barrels. Due to the highly complex production process of ABTM, where each battery is influenced by several factors, this study's findings are specific to the current experimental conditions. Hydrogel-based flexible electronic devices have great potential in human motion monitoring, electronic skins, and human-computer interaction applications; hence, the efficient preparation of highly sensitive hydrogel-based flexible sensors is important. In the present work, the ultrafast polymerization of a hydrogel (1–3 min) was achieved by constructing a tannic acid (TA)-Fe3+ dynamic redox system, which endowed the hydrogel with good adhesion performance (the adhesion strength in wood was 17.646 kPa). In addition, the uniform dispersal ensured by incorporating polydopamine-decorated polypyrrole (PPy@PDA) into the hydrogel matrix significantly improved the hydrogel's stretching ability (575.082%). The as-prepared PAM/CS/PPy@PDA/TA hydrogel-based flexible sensor had a high-fidelity low detection limit (strain = 1%), high sensitivity at small strains (GF = 5.311 at strain = 0–8%), and fast response time (0.33 s) and recovery time (0.25 s), and it was reliably applied to accurate human motion monitoring and handwriting recognition. Background and Aims Secondary cell wall (SCW) thickening is a major cellular developmental stage determining wood structure and properties. Although the molecular regulation of cell wall deposition during tracheary element differentiation has been well established in primary growth systems, less is known about the gene regulatory processes involved in the multi-layered SCW thickening of mature trees. Methods Using third-generation [long-read single-molecule real-time (SMRT)] and second-generation [short-read sequencing by synthesis (SBS)] sequencing methods, we established a Pinus bungeana transcriptome resource with comprehensive functional and structural annotation for the first time. Using these approaches, we generated high spatial resolution datasets for the vascular cambium, xylem expansion regions, early SCW thickening, late SCW thickening and mature xylem tissues of 71-year-old Pinus bungeana trees. Key Results A total of 79 390 non-redundant transcripts, 31 808 long non-coding RNAs and 5147 transcription factors were annotated and quantified in different xylem tissues at all growth and differentiation stages. Furthermore, using this high spatial resolution dataset, we established a comprehensive transcriptomic profile and found that members of the NAC, WRKY, SUS, CESA and LAC gene families are major players in early SCW formation in tracheids, whereas members of the MYB and LBD transcription factor families are highly expressed during late SCW thickening. Conclusions Our results provide new molecular insights into the regulation of multi-layered SCW thickening in conifers. Poor condition of roofs in terms of decay of shingles and loss of tar-based surface treatments has been revealed in a number of churches at various geographical locations in mid-Sweden. The condition of tars obtained from shingles of selected churches in mid-Sweden were analysed and obtained data were compared with geographical locations of the churches. According to gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy result, dehydroabietic acid was the dominant compound found in the exposed tars from the churches except in church of Malung where similar amounts of retene was found. Oxidised resin acids were found in exposed tars from the churches but not in commercially available pit burned tar. Tar from church shingles had higher char residues than the pit burned tar which was totally consumed when heated under nitrogen gas up to 750°C using thermogravimetric analysis. Scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer analysis revealed higher amounts of silicates in some exposed tars; however, these compounds constituted only a minor portion of the organic matter in these specimens. Based on the data obtained in the study other factors rather than simply geographical location of churches seemed to be of importance to explain differences of the investigated properties of the church tars. The present study examined the wood properties of Pterocarpus erinaceus, a species found in West Africa's Guineo-Sudanian and Sudano-Sahelian zones. The primarily focus was on wood fiber properties, which serve as indicators of cambial growth and the transition between juvenile and mature wood. The aim was to analyze the factors contributing to the variability of the wood fiber properties. Specifically, it examined the effect of cambial age and ecological factors on fiber properties and analyzed how the fiber properties influence density and dimensional characteristics of the wood. Measurements of fiber properties were obtained from 451 specimens collected in the Guinean, Sudanian, and Sahelian zones in Burkina Faso, Niger, and Togo. The results indicate significant variations in average fiber parameters among the three climatic zones. This variability leads to an increase in the length, width, and thickness of the fibers along the north–south decreasing rainfall gradient. However, no noteworthy correlations were observed between cambial age and fiber properties, posing challenges in distinguishing between juvenile and adult wood. In terms of correlation, the analysis shows that fiber length has no effect on physical properties, but fiber width significantly influences basic density, wood shrinkage, and the fiber saturation point (FSP). Process design critically depends on the characterization of fuels and their kinetics under process conditions. This study steps beyond the fundamental methods of thermogravimetry to modulated (MTGA) and Hi-Res™ (high resolution) techniques to (1) add characterization detail and (2) increase the utility of thermal analysis data. Modulated TGA methods overlay sinusoidal functions on the heating rates to determine activation energy as a function of temperature with time. Under devolatilization conditions, Hi-Res™ TGA maintains a constant mass loss with time and temperature. These two methods, run independently or overlaid, offer additional analysis in which multiple samples at different heating rates are run to different final temperatures. Advanced methods allow researchers to use fewer samples by conducting fewer runs, targeting practical experimental designs, and quantifying errors easier. The parameters of the studies included here vary the heating rate at 10, 30, and 50 °C/min; vary gas-phase oxygen for pyrolysis or combustion conditions; and particle size ranges of 100–125 µm, 400–425 µm, and 600–630 µm. The two biomass fuels used in the studies are pinewood from Northern Sweden and wheat straw. The influence of torrefaction is also included at temperatures of 220, 250, and 280 °C. Apparent activation energy results align with the previous MTGA data in that combustion conditions yield higher values than pyrolysis conditions—200–250 kJ/mol and 175–225 kJ/mol for pine and wheat combustion, respectively, depending on pre-treatment. Results show the dependence of these parameters upon one another from a traditional thermal analysis approach, e.g., the Ozawa-Flynn-Wall method, as well as MTGA and Hi-Res™ thermogravimetric investigations to show future directions for thermal analysis techniques. The study of the origin of underwater artefacts is a crucial and relevant topic to be highlighted, especially in the Southeast Asia Region, due to the active trading route during the Age of Sail. In the present study, we aim to discover the ship type and sailing route of the Bidong shipwreck using both relative and absolute analysis. The team analysed the wood samples collected at the Bidong shipwreck site during the second excavation phase. The analysis of wood anatomy and Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) was performed on five wood fragments at the Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM). Based on the conducted analyses, two types of trees were identified in the construction of Bidong shipwrecks, namely Giam (Hopea spp.) and Meranti Temak Nipis (Shorea roxburghii). Both types of trees are commonly discovered in tropical climate regimes and the area of the Malay Archipelago. In addition, the team also compared the selected artefacts from the first phase of excavation with some published references of Southeast Asian Ceramic and live records from National Maritime Museums, Chanthaburi, and Southeast Asian Ceramic Museum, Bangkok University, Thailand. Significantly, the comparison analysis suggests that the artefacts rescued from the Bidong shipwreck were Thai ceramics of the Maenam Noi (Singburi) and Si Satchanalai (Sawankhalok) types. The result from these studies suggests that the Bidong shipwreck stopped loading Siamese ceramics or even repairing in Southeast Asia and sailing along the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia for some destination in the sixteenth century during the Age of Monsoonal Civilisation. This study presents findings regarding the kinetics of ferrous iron oxidation in solution mediated by Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans bacteria within a continuous-flow bioreactor employing diverse types of immobilizers. The objective is to augment the rate of ferrous iron oxidation in solutions utilizing an immobilizer for Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans strains. Immobilization represents a promising avenue for enhancing the efficiency of Fe2⁺ oxidation via acidophilic ferrooxidizing bacteria, leading to a several-fold increase in oxidation rate. A comparative analysis was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of different types of immobilizer in facilitating iron oxidation within a continuous-flow bioreactor, including the application of wood chips coated with Fe(OH)3. The results indicate that wood chips coated with iron hydroxide serve as effective type of immobilizer, facilitating the robust attachment of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans via electrostatic interactions between negatively charged bacteria and positively charged surfaces. Experimental investigations were conducted using novel immobilization matrices in pilot-scale tests simulating the underground borehole leaching (UBL) of uranium. The bioactivation of leaching solutions enhances the efficiency and environmental compatibility of UBL compared to conventional chemical oxidation methods. The relationships between redox potential and ferric iron content in bioactivated solutions during the UBL of uranium were delineated. The significance of this study lies in its elucidating the pivotal role of Fe2⁺ oxidation in uranium extraction processes, particularly in the context of UBL. By employing bioactivation mediated by Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans, the study demonstrates not only enhanced uranium extraction efficiency, but also markedly improved environmental sustainability compared to traditional chemical oxidation methods. Cost-effective, non-destructive means of estimating wood properties of eucalypts grown in Guangxi, China, were evaluated using near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy and resistance drilling. For this evaluation, wood samples for NIR analysis and resistance drill measurements were collected from 581 trees, representing eight plantation Eucalyptus taxa across five sites. The near infra-red (NIR) spectra collected from the 581 wood samples were analysed using existing calibrations for kraft pulp yield, cellulose content, hot water extractives and Klason lignin. These spectra and calibrations were effective in predicting over 60% of the variance in total carbohydrates and over 80% of the extractives and lignin values from independent laboratory analysis of a subset of 100 samples. Resistance drilling combined with software developed for processing the drill data proved to be a quick, low cost and effective means of quantifying wood density (as amplitude of the drill torque), stem diameter and bark thickness. In this study, we introduce a novel application of wood as the construction material for Microbial Fuel Cell (MFC) containers, developing what we term the Wooden Membrane-less Microbial Fuel Cell (WML-MFC). This innovative approach leverages the natural properties of wood to enhance the sustainability and cost-effectiveness of MFCs. Employing three different types of wood—pine, oak, and black locust—the WML-MFC design incorporates a carbon felt anode inside the wooden container and a carbon cloth cathode wrapped externally. This configuration not only protects the cathode from biofouling but also utilizes the inherent moisture management capabilities of wood to maintain operational stability. The performance of these wooden MFCs was assessed in terms of electricity generation and water treatment efficacy. Pine and oak containers achieved maximum power densities (MPD) of 35 mW/m^2 and 4 mW/m^2, respectively, with corresponding maximum open-circuit voltages of 551 mV and 269 mV. Black locust showed the least effective bioelectricity generation. COD removal efficiency was observed between 18 and 48% for pine and 3% to 39% for oak over hydraulic retention times of 24–48 h. Notable water loss due to moisture diffusion was recorded at 20%/day in pine and 6%/day in oak. Durability assessments through DMA and SEM analyses confirmed the suitability of wood as a container material, emphasizing the dual environmental and economic benefits of this WML-MFC design. The aim of this work is to evaluate two quantitative methods, based on the external calibration applied in laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) analysis, known as (i) analytical curve and (ii) one-point calibration, using the concept of matrix matching to quantify three potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in wood samples. These can biologically register changes in the abiotic environment and be applied to monitoring climate change or environmental toxicity. In this case, standard sample preparation was evaluated to prepare the standard pellets using Pinus taeda species as a matrix-matching concept. Six pellets of P. taeda, with different Pb, Cd, and Ba concentrations, were prepared to build the analytical curve and one-point calibration strategies. The LA-ICP-MS parameters were optimised for 206Pb, 208Pb, 112Cd, 114Cd, 137Ba, and 138Ba isotope analysis in wood samples. The two calibration strategies provided 74–110% analytical recovery from certified reference materials and similar results to those obtained by ICP-MS through the acid digestion of environmental wood samples from São Paulo City (Brazil). This demonstrated the applicability of the one-point calibration strategy in quantifying PTEs in wood samples, which could be used with environmental analyses. Differences observed between the Ba isotope results obtained via LA-ICP-MS and ICP-MS quantification were related to sampling by LA-ICP-MS and the ICP-MS sample introduction, as well as to laser matrix and transport effects because of the difference between the wood species evaluated. Renewable energy resources such as biomass are crucial for a sustainable global society. Trees are a major source of lignocellulosic biomass, which can vary in response to different environmental factors owing to epigenetic regulation, such as DNA C‐methylation. To investigate the effects of DNA methylation on plant development and wood formation, and its impacts on gene expression, with a focus on secondary cell wall (SCW)‐associated genes, Salix purpurea plantlets were cloned from buds derived from a single hybrid tree for both treatment and control conditions. For the treatment condition, buds were exposed to 50 μM zebularine in vitro and a combined strategy of whole‐genome bisulfite sequencing (WGBS) and RNA‐seq was employed to examine the methylome and transcriptome profiles of different tissues collected at various time points under both conditions. Transcriptomic and methylome data revealed that most of the promoter and gene body demethylation had no marked effects on the expression profiles of genes. Nevertheless, gene expression tended to decrease with the increased methylation levels of genes with highly methylated promoters. Results indicated that demethylation is less evident in centromeric regions and sex chromosomes. Promoters of secondary cell wall‐associated genes, such as 4‐coumarate‐CoA ligase‐like and Rac‐like GTP‐binding protein RHO, were differentially methylated in the secondary xylem samples collected from two‐month potted treated plants compared to control samples. Our results provide novel insights into DNA methylation and gene expression landscapes and a basis for investigating the epigenetic regulation of wood formation in S. purpurea as a model plant for bioenergy species. The combustion of traditional fuels in low-income countries, including those in sub-Saharan Africa, leads to extensive indoor particle exposure. Yet, the related health consequences in this context are understudied. This study aimed to evaluate the in vitro toxicity of combustion-derived particles relevant for Sub-Saharan household environments. Particles (< 2.5 µm) were collected using a high-volume sampler during combustion of traditional Ethiopian biomass fuels: cow dung, eucalyptus wood and eucalyptus charcoal. Diesel exhaust particles (DEP, NIST 2975) served as reference particles. The highest levels of particle-bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were found in wood (3219 ng/mg), followed by dung (618 ng/mg), charcoal (136 ng/mg) and DEP (118 ng/mg) (GC–MS). BEAS-2B bronchial epithelial cells and THP-1 derived macrophages were exposed to particle suspensions (1–150 µg/mL) for 24 h. All particles induced concentration-dependent genotoxicity (comet assay) but no pro-inflammatory cytokine release in epithelial cells, whereas dung and wood particles also induced concentration-dependent cytotoxicity (Alamar Blue). Only wood particles induced concentration-dependent cytotoxicity and genotoxicity in macrophage-like cells, while dung particles were unique at increasing secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-6, IL-8, TNF-α). In summary, particles derived from combustion of less energy dense fuels like dung and wood had a higher PAH content and were more cytotoxic in epithelial cells. In addition, the least energy dense and cheapest fuel, dung, also induced pro-inflammatory effects in macrophage-like cells. These findings highlight the influence of fuel type on the toxic profile of the emitted particles and warrant further research to understand and mitigate health effects of indoor air pollution. Spruce wood is widely used in outdoor applications, but its susceptibility to degradation under exposure to sunlight and moisture is a major concern. This study investigates the impact of accelerated aging on spruce wood's surface chemistry, microstructure, geometry, and discoloration. The study was performed in two outdoor aging modes: dry and wet. The accelerated aging effects were evident in the changes in spruce wood structure, as well as in the other studied properties. During aging, it developed significant discoloration. Under simulated rainless outdoor conditions (dry mode), spruce wood gradually became dark brown. Under conditions involving rain (wet mode), the discoloration was qualitatively different from the dry mode. FTIR spectroscopy showed that during the accelerated aging of wood, lignin was mainly degraded, especially in the early stages of the process. A linear correlation was found between the changes in lignin and the color changes in the wood. There was an increase in carbonyl groups in the dry mode, which contributed to the color change and was also influenced by changes in extractives. The wet mode caused the leaching out of carbonyl groups. The observed decrease in cellulose crystallinity, together with the degradation of hydrophobic lignin, may result in the increased hydrophilicity of photodegraded wood. For both modes, there were different changes in the wood micro- and macrostructure, reflected in the surface morphology. The roughness increased during the aging process in both modes. The slightest changes in the roughness parameters were identified in the grain direction in the dry mode; the most evident was that the roughness parameters increased perpendicular to the grain in the wet mode. The demonstrated mechanism backing up the aging-related changes to the spruce wood structure and the relations unveiled between these changes and the changes in the spruce wood surface properties can provide an issue point for seeking ways how to mitigate the negative effects of the environmental factors the wood is exposed to. Wood formation involves consecutive developmental steps, including cell division of vascular cambium, xylem cell expansion, secondary cell wall (SCW) deposition, and programmed cell death. In this study, we identified PagMYB31 as a coordinator regulating these processes in Populus alba × Populus glandulosa and built a PagMYB31-mediated transcriptional regulatory network. PagMYB31 mutation caused fewer layers of cambial cells, larger fusiform initials, ray initials, vessels, fiber and ray cells, and enhanced xylem cell SCW thickening, showing that PagMYB31 positively regulates cambial cell proliferation and negatively regulates xylem cell expansion and SCW biosynthesis. PagMYB31 repressed xylem cell expansion and SCW thickening through directly inhibiting wall-modifying enzyme genes and the transcription factor genes that activate the whole SCW biosynthetic program, respectively. In cambium, PagMYB31 could promote cambial activity through TRACHEARY ELEMENT DIFFERENTIATION INHIBITORY FACTOR (TDIF)/PHLOEM INTERCALATED WITH XYLEM (PXY) signaling by directly regulating CLAVATA3/ESR-RELATED (CLE) genes, and it could also directly activate WUSCHEL HOMEOBOX RELATED4 (PagWOX4), forming a feedforward regulation. We also observed that PagMYB31 could either promote cell proliferation through the MYB31-MYB72-WOX4 module or inhibit cambial activity through the MYB31-MYB72-VASCULAR CAMBIUM-RELATED MADS2 (VCM2)/PIN-FORMED5 (PIN5) modules, suggesting its role in maintaining the homeostasis of vascular cambium. PagMYB31 could be a potential target to manipulate different developmental stages of wood formation. Concerns on the expanding infestation of several Acacia species in the southern Mediterranean European countries have triggered an ever-growing requirement for costly targeted control actions. Valorizing biomass waste produced could help promote and better finance these actions. For that purpose, wood wastes from invasive control actions were tested regarding their pulp and paper potential, aiming to entice cellulose industries to partake in future conservation actions. Wood waste from the five most pervasive Acacia species was studied (Acacia dealbata Link, Acacia longifolia Willd, Acacia mearnsii De Wild, Acacia melanoxylon R.Br, and Acacia saligna Labill) regarding physical and chemical characteristics, and a central composite design was used to optimize alkali charge and reaction temperature on pulping yield and delignification. Bleached kraft pulps were produced with each species' optimized conditions and for an equitable mixture of all species. Optimized pulp yields (52.6%–53.5%) and pulp polymerization degree (2867–3690) of Acacia species were higher than those of Eucalyptus globulus Labill (used as reference). Optimized bleached pulps were refined and fiber, pulp, and handsheet properties determined. Acacia dealbata and A. longifolia presented high specific wood consumption and lower handsheet strength properties, pointing to overall lower pulping potential, while A. melanoxylon and A. mearnsii characteristics were equal to or higher than those of E. globulus. A. saligna pulp and handsheet characteristics appear more suited for tissue paper. The Acacia mixture achieved acceptable characteristics, enabling the indiscriminate use of Acacia wood regardless of the species. As a shortcoming, the Acacia pulps showed the worst optical characteristics, with brightness dropping substantially with beating (64%–76%) when compared to E. globulus (81%). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
