This study examines the relationship between gender-based violence and the safety of journalists during the age of the populist zeitgeist. It includes an exploratory analysis of the discourses used by Jair Bolsonaro against Brazilian female journalists throughout his presidency. The findings provide evidence of the persistent misogynistic and patriarchal norms and attitudes of right-wing populists, who often target women based on their gender or perceived status to undermine them. The study concludes that Bolsonaro combined derogatory comments about gender and sexuality with attacks on the reputation and morals of female journalists. By leveraging ideologically motivated and culturally entrenched gender stereotypes, he constructed discursive strategies that shaped different identities for Brazilian women journalists. This approach aimed to damage their credibility and obstruct their ability to perform their journalistic duties effectively, especially in the politically complex reporting environment. This essay examines the ways that controversial texts were read by reader-critics who sought to engage with their reading in new ways in the eighteenth century. It takes as its primary example An Apology for the Life of George Anne Bellamy (1785), the autobiography of a woman actor in mid-eighteenth-century Britain. Bellamy was praised for her sentiment but criticized for her representation of facts, despite the fact that where her descriptions can be corroborated they are generally accurate. In addition to examining published critical reactions, this essay looks in depth at the annotations of two early readers in a surviving copy of the book to document how hostile readers read works like Bellamy's Apology in order to judge, correct, or otherwise speak back to the author in a kind of dialogue. This essay suggests that women writers like Bellamy were particularly susceptible to the hostile reader because of more general distrust of women as reporters of fact, and that hostile readers were particularly interested in controversial texts that prompted engagement. The article aims to investigate how Brazilian women journalists assess harassment and gender inequalities in newsrooms. By considering an array of female professionals' testimonials, we also examine to what extent such burdens in the workplace harm journalists' private life and professional routines. Based on 31 semi-structured interviews, we found that the main grievances include unfair treatment regarding career opportunities, moral and sexual harassment, and the recurrent discrediting of complaints addressed to newsroom managers. According to the interviewees, the lack of support from coworkers and media organizations contributes to a culture of impunity characterizing the industry. In addition, although women comprise the majority of workers in Brazilian newsrooms, they often do not receive the same acknowledgment as male journalists for their performance. Our research provides two contributions to the scholarship by systematizing the complaints reported by female journalists. First, we discuss how to improve professional support mechanisms at the level of news companies. This paper examines the relationship between journalism, caregiving, and family-building, focusing on women journalists in Portugal. Drawing on a critical thematic analysis of thirty interviews, it explores an analytic framework that includes cultural, structural, and agentic dimensions of career limitations, organised in three overarching themes. The first examines how women journalists experience work constraints stemming from traditional cultural ideals where women are still the main caregivers and work cultures that perpetuate a male perspective on professional routines. The second theme explores the mismatch between work and care responsibilities that arises from prevailing family structures and work processes. The third theme centres on how women journalists respond to constraints by making choices and developing strategies. Journalists’ reflexive deliberations about career decisions, employment conditions, family life and cultural assumptions underpinning parenthood demonstrate the complex interrelationship between cultural and working structures, organisational materiality, and agency. Together, these dimensions replicate patterns that make journalism more inhospitable for women. A central point in this research is that while a systemic gender bias exists beyond the sector, workplace inequalities are particularly consequential for journalism and democracy. We investigate the level of gender parity in political news reporting at the New York Times. We apply a media sociology approach to examine how gender stereotypes, women in media leadership, and women in political leadership interact to affect the extent to which women journalists appear in bylines about domestic and foreign affairs news. We leverage an original data collection of nearly 3,000 news articles published from 2007–2020. We find several key results. First, women are more likely to appear in bylines about domestic political news than foreign affairs news. Second, we find that during Jill Abramson's tenure as executive editor the number of women writing about politics increased. Third, as the proportion of women in the U.S. Congress rises, more women appear in story bylines about political news. Fourth, while more women write about political news now compared to the past, most political news stories still have men as authors. The purpose of this study is to examine whether and to what extent traditionally gendered factors of newsroom culture as well as emerging factors that originated following the introduction of the new media environment are positively associated with South Korean women journalists' intention to leave newsroom careers. In addition, this study explores what roles career generation gaps play in the relationship between traditionally gendered factors, the new media environment, and women journalists' intention to leave. By analyzing data from a survey of members of the Korean Women Journalists Association, the most authoritative and representative organization of women journalists in South Korea, findings of this study showed that not only traditionally gendered factors but also emerging factors were positively associated with the resignations of Korean women journalists. In this study, traditionally gendered factors include a masculine-dominant newsroom culture, discriminations in beat assignments and promotions, and work-family conflicts. Emerging factors related to the new media environment include cyberbullying, additional online workloads, and the weakening of women journalists' social status. The results indicate that emerging factors were more positively associated with women journalists' intention to resign. The article examines the enactment of rhetorical citizenship in a cultural journalism podcast that seeks (1) to raise awareness of the exploitation and abuses against intra-EU migrant caregivers (predominantly women) and (2) to reinvest with credibility and agency a woman activist with a contested personal history. The analytical framework draws upon semio-pragmatics, multimodal discourse studies and rhetorical criticism in order to show how rhetorical agency is jointly performed by the producer of the podcast (a woman journalist) and the migrant caregiver within the interaction frame of the podcast dispositive. We show that rhetorical agency is enabled through a balanced articulation of news-style documentary, reportage-specific personal narrative and voice-over commentary, cast in immersive podcast features. The producer combines traditional and alternative journalistic styles, genres and digital technologies to engage listeners, while connecting them to the low-skilled women migrants' transnational everyday lives and problems, and to their voices and rhetorical acts. In the constitutional era, Iranian women graduallyincreasingly entered the media. First, the women of the capital city entered this arena, and shortly thereafter, the women of the cities also entered. They quickly achieved success in this field, publishing significant publications and engaging in significant activities. The objective of this investigation is to determine the manner in which the "Neday-e Iran" and "Neday-e Irani" periodicals analyzed political and social matters in Iran during the years 1947 to 1952. The political and social issues of the 1940s and 1950s have been critically examined by the newspapers Neday-e Iran and Nedaye Irani, which were published in Shiraz by Mrs. Nusrat Al-Mouluk Kashmirizadeh, have taken a critical look at the political and social issues of their time. In the field of political affairs, these newspapers published sharp articles and analyses that criticized the performance of the statesmen and firmly opposed the underperforming and xenophobic statesmen. Conversely, these newspapers also monitored and mirrored the social issues and challenges of Shiraz city. They sought to resolve these issues by imposing demands on the administrators and officials of Shiraz. These two newspapers also addressed issues concerning women, emphasizing the necessity of societal change and transformation to enhance the status of women. Archival, library, and field methods (interviews) are employed to gather information in the current study. This paper analyzes the media coverage of pay equity in women's tennis in three newspapers during the 1973 U.S. Open and 2007 Wimbledon tournaments, the first and last Grand Slams to offer equal pay. Through a feminist textual analysis of over 100 articles, this study shows that journalists portrayed the female athletes involved in the pay equity conversations in 2007 as empowered advocates, marking an important shift from the 'emotional' and 'demanding' descriptions reporters applied to women in 1973. This research ultimately explores the role that the media plays in reflecting and reproducing hegemonic norms around pay equity through representations of leading women athlete activists in the press. Sports journalism has become one of the news products with the most significant social reach in the press, radio, television and digital media. Despite the significant presence of women in journalism, they continue to face gender-based stereotypes. In Spain, not very many women can effectively access the labour field of sports journalism, and those who do find themselves in a space dominated by men, which results in a perpetuation of the existing imbalances in society. The main objective of this study is to analyse the evolution of the roles developed by women journalists in the article-production aspect of the Spanish sports press between 2010 and 2022. We use quantitative content analysis, studying the articles published in Marca and Mundo Deportivo during the second week of June in 2010, 2014, and 2018, and the third week of November 2022; in each of these years, the men's FIFA World Cup was played. The results of this study show that: (a) women journalists have an almost invisible role in the production of articles, and (b) rather than progress, women are facing "pseudo-progress", a more appropriate term for the appearance of a change that is not actually occurring. This study analyzes the trajectory of Brazilian women journalists. It compares the position of women and men journalists in the workplace and in the configuration of journalistic careers. It also analyzes how bot groups make their choices within this organizational system. This study also discusses how work-family balance mechanisms affect both genders differently. To meet these objectives, two sets of data were explored: a survey conducted with 496 Brazilian journalists and in-depth interviews conducted with 21 professionals. Results coincide with findings from literature in the area regarding structural inequalities in the profession: women earn less; they are under-represented in leadership and directorial positions in media companies while simultaneously being in the majority in less legitimate and more precarious segments of the profession. Women appear to limit their career choices to less ambitious positions in the workplace. In addition, female journalists are more likely to be constrained by the effects of balancing work and family when building their careers. The comparative lack of women in newsrooms and in news coverage is a global problem, typically rooted in countries' masculinized norms that permeate society writ large, from kitchen tables to newsrooms to halls of power. Journalistic coverage often reinforces this gendered hierarchy. The harassment of journalists is nothing new; however, much of the harassment literature has focused on the abuse of journalists online, while neglecting encounters that occur offline. As such, this study explores the experiences and effects of in-the-field harassment that occurs as journalists cover protests in the U.S., and how harassment experiences at protests vary for men and women journalists. Using a survey of 339 journalists and in-depth interviews with 20 journalists, findings indicate that women journalists had more negative experiences at protests than their men counterparts and were more likely to alter their situations as a result. Moreover, newsroom support was relatively common while journalists were actively reporting on protests but ended once journalists completed their coverage. This oversight leaves many journalists—particularly women—with increasing mental and emotional struggles they are left to deal with alone. This study critically examines how cultural and social identities, coupled with the volatile political climate, influence the frequency and nature of online harassment faced by women journalists in India. Using a mixed-methods approach, the research incorporates quantitative data from a survey of 113 female journalists and qualitative insights from in-depth interviews with seven journalists from diverse backgrounds. The findings reveal a significant correlation between cultural events and increased harassment, highlighted by a strong Spearman's rank correlation coefficient of 0.974. Political events similarly elevate harassment risks, confirming that both the perception and severity of harassment intensify during such periods. Additionally, the effectiveness of institutional support and personal coping strategies are scrutinized, indicating a crucial role for media organizations in mitigating harassment through proactive measures. The study not only highlights the specific vulnerabilities of women journalists in India but also calls for comprehensive policy reforms and stronger organizational support systems to safeguard these vital voices in the media landscape. Prejudicial behaviors toward female journalists are on the rise, yet few instruments are available to measure stereotyping of female journalists. The present work validates a new scale for measuring the prominent sexual stereotype that female journalists have sex with their sources using exploratory (N = 561) and confirmatory factor analysis (N = 580). Results reveal that the proposed scale has a reliable and replicable factor structure that is distinct from measures of sexism and journalist mistrust, attesting to concurrent and discriminant validity. The proposed scale also negatively predicts the credibility of news written by women, which demonstrates predictive validity. This article examines histories of women journalists published in our field's two leading journals, American Journalism and Journalism History, to understand how these women and their work have been described by historians like us throughout the course of their publication. This article argues that much like the women journalists they study, many historians of women journalists have infused their work with "benevolent sexism," a term that describes seemingly positive, yet covertly diminishing language reflective of the neoliberal, individualist, merit-based feminism many female academics have adopted to fit in with a male-dominated academy. Through a sociolinguistic analysis of ninety-five journal articles published about historical women journalists, this article identifies systemic problems in how we write about women and offers practical solutions to improve our work going forward. This study examines how diverse US-based journalists—both Black, Indigenous, and people of color and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer [or sometimes questioning] and others—perform their diversity within newsrooms. Applying Goffman's theory of dramaturgy, the study illustrates the nuanced differences in terms of how journalists perform their diverse identities differently on both the frontstage and backstage. These differences are explained through the proliferation of historical norms such as objectivity in journalism in the United States, norms that curtail how diversity can be enacted. The study introduces the concept of professional backstaging, a concept that describes how professional norms can bypass organizational and individual agency to force certain actions off the frontstage. Finally, the discussion theorizes how these findings—and particularly the concept of professional backstaging—can contribute to future work across studies of media organizations and within the discipline of organizational communication. Background: Women have increased opportunities to participate in digital journalism, but racial and gender disparities are still pervasive in the industry. Analysis: Using qualitative, semi-structured interviews, this research examines ongoing experiences of women working in digital journalism in Canada from an intersectional perspective that attends to race, gender, and class. Conclusions and implications: In the context of an industry undergoing continual change and transformation, women of colour occupy more precarious forms of employment and work on more tenuous terrain. This research examines whether and to what extent journalists are harassed online and the effects of online harassment on their professional roles. The study classifies online harassment against journalists into five types: insults, threats, privacy intrusion, sexual assault, and cyber-hacking. The findings reveal a positive correlation between online harassment and various adverse outcomes for journalists, including increased self-censorship, reduced public engagement, and heightened skepticism toward journalism. With regard to a specific type of online harassment, journalists' gender plays a role as a moderator: The relationship between insults and self-censorship, disengagement with the public, and skepticism toward journalism was found to be stronger for women journalists than men journalists. The (under)representation of women in the news has received much attention in scholarly research. Using a population dataset of news broadcasts in Belgium, this article describes how gender equality has changed over time (2003–2021) and investigates which factors explain the presence (or absence) of women as speaking actors in the news. The findings reveal a structural underrepresentation of women in the news, but a slow increase in their presence over time. Overall, women are more equally represented in softer news topics or in non-elite roles. Remarkable is that women journalists tend to interview more female sources than their male counterparts. Following the conservative Turkish government's political-economic capture of the news media, educated and pro-feminist women journalists have migrated online. Despite having more publicity across platforms, they face immediate prosecution based on the tweet of an anonymous troll, an informant citizen or a government official. While this is a common case of networked misogyny, inspired by Liz Kelly's concept of the continuum of sexual violence, we argue that networked misogyny against women journalists is not simply technological but rather both interconnected across different spaces (online manosphere, masculine newsrooms, and authoritarian state) and intersectional feeding from nationalism, class, and anti-Western sentiments. This intersectionality renders networked misogyny against Turkey's journalists different from liberal contexts because it operates not through illegality but suspicion (of terrorism, treason). Our focus on interconnections and intersectionality allows for theorizing networked misogyny beyond the digital, genders current perspectives on authoritarianism and reframes networked misogyny as a violent war targeting women's intellectual labor and public visibility, both significant threats to authoritarian regimes across the globe. The interconnected and intersectional stories of networked misogyny from Turkey point to how fighting against this form of violence is also a fight against the post-truth regimes of authoritarianism and fight for democracy. In this article, we examine the position of women in Czech video game journalism and the strategies they use to cope with sexism. To this end, we conducted eight in-depth interviews with currently active women journalists. According to our respondents, their work is judged more harshly because they are women and they have to deal with gender boundaries and stereotypes, sometimes conforming to them to prevent further harassment. In this regard, our respondents were criticized (as well as praised) for their physical appearance and treated as less competent than their male colleagues. All respondents agreed that they were repeatedly told by various parties—players, colleagues, and developers—that they were not good enough as game journalists (and never would be). We argue that women game journalists are pronouncedly affected by sexism and misogyny as their expert role directly challenges toxic gaming masculinities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

"Writing and Rewriting the Reich: Women Journalists in the Nazi and Post-War Press" by Deborah Barton is a well-researched book that explores the role of women journalists in the Third Reich and postwar West Germany. The book analyzes how women journalists navigated power in the Nazi regime, their involvement in covering or hiding Nazi brutality, and their use of gendered assumptions to rewrite their own narratives after 1945. Gender equality issues are receiving increasing media attention. At the same time, journalists reporting on such issues experience hostility and online harassment. This study investigates which factors drive users' intentions to engage with journalistic content on gender equality issues and whether the author's gender plays a role in this. An experiment was conducted among German online users (n = 612) with issue ownership and backlash as two central mechanisms to explain gendered perceptions and engagement with articles on gender equalityissues. Results show that men journalists writing about harassment in the workplace were perceived more negatively than women journalists writing about the same issue, which partially also affects engagement. In the case of a less sensitive topic such as women's leadership, participants' feminine gender role orientation increased intentions to engage with the article written by a woman, whereas in the case of a sensitive topic such as harassment it fostered backlash toward the woman author. Findings indicate that both backlash theory and role congruity theory account for distinct partially contradicting effects of gender norms and role perceptions on the engagement with articles on gender equality issues. Using in-depth interviews with 65 participants from the CGNet Swara and the Video Volunteers, two citizen journalism organisations, this study investigates how citizen journalism in India is encouraging a new generation of women in very resource-poor areas to participate in the news production process and produce what they call a 'journalism of change'. Women journalists say they have found a 'space' and 'channel' through these organisations to report on stories that are women centric but also serve the community as a whole. Viewing their roles as ones of responsibility rather than power, they also work to motivate other women to join, creating networks of empowerment that encourage greater participation from women who hitherto had few such opportunities. In this study, we examined the trolling of female journalists on Twitter in Pakistan. Through quantitative and qualitative content analysis, we found the female journalists received offensive comments in which the trolls mocked their gender, profession, and personal lives. Though the trolls affiliated with the government produced more hate, opposition political parties and ordinary people also engaged in varying levels of gender-based slurs. Moreover, the journalists critical of the government received more negative comments than the pro-government journalists. Our findings show the trolls adopted a targeted approach in which the highly conservative cultural values were exploited to put social pressure on journalists to dissuade them against exercising their democratic rights. Using positioning analysis we examine how women entrepreneurs construct their entrepreneurial identities in conversations with journalists. The data consists of every interview with women entrepreneurs in every Latvian monthly women's magazine over a 30-year period. Eleven countries in Eastern Europe, including Latvia, broke away from the communist regime in the 1990s and embraced neoliberal and entrepreneurial values that rely on the use of agency in a free market and where individuals were considered autonomous agents, no longer constrained by gender inequalities and power imbalances. However, an analysis shows that identity constructions by women entrepreneurs have been built on neo-conservative assumptions regarding gender. The default option expressed in the magazines reveals that entrepreneurship is normatively masculine, and the entrepreneurial identity that is on offer for women is either as a 'secondary entrepreneur' or a 'failed woman'. The post-feminist conception of a woman who can have it all, i.e. both a successful business career and a traditional feminine identity with a happy family life, is absent in the interviews. When neoliberalism entered Latvia and merged with neo-conservative gender roles, a specific Eastern European postfeminist regime emerged where neither entrepreneurship nor structural change can be seen as challenging the prevailing patriarchal gender order. This article discusses online harassment against women journalists exploring self-reported incidents, effects, and trust in safety mechanisms. Drawing on twenty-five semi-structured interviews of women journalists in Portugal, we use a feminist and critical realist framework to explore the causal structures and generative mechanisms that explain their vulnerability to online abuse. We identify three overarching themes: increasing visibility in a context of higher hostility towards journalism and insufficient safety mechanisms; intersectional gender inequality and cultural mores that foster it; and (individual) responses to harassment. These themes show that women journalists' actions are both constrained and enabled by existing structures and cultural attitudes. While they tend to deny harassment is caused by their gender, seeing it mainly because of their job, they admit the sexualised and gendered nature of the insults, seeing this as an added offence not experienced by their male counterparts. Women are underrepresented in many areas of journalistic newsrooms. In this paper, we examine if this established effect persists in the new forms of journalistic communication, namely social media networks. We use mentions, retweets, and hashtags as measures of journalistic amplification and legitimation. Furthermore, we compare two groups of journalists in different stages of development: political and data journalists in Germany in 2021. Our results show that journalists identified as women tend to favor other women journalists in mentions and retweets on Twitter (now called X), compared to men. While both professions are dominated by men, with a high share of tweets authored by men, women mention and retweet other women more than their male colleagues. Female data journalists also leverage different sources than men. This paper analyzes the work experience of Israeli-Palestinian women journalists who reside and work in Israel for local news organizations or non-Israeli news agencies. It focuses on their experiences related to the intersected axes of their gender, ethnic, and national identities. Through thematic analysis of narrative interviews with 24 Palestinian women journalists, the study reveals that their work experiences vary between exclusion and inclusion among different news organizations. Israeli-Palestinian women journalists face barriers getting jobs at mainstream news agencies because of their accent; and when they apply to local Arab news organizations, they confront recruiting procedures based on a clan system that discriminates against women. However, a few of them report an advantage when trying to enter mainstream news organizations based on their image as an "authentic Arab woman." Criticism towards journalists has increased significantly since the internet created easy and anonymous communication and has turned more abusive and threatening in recent years, becoming a regular feature of journalists' work environment, particularly for women. This article presents survey data about the amount and nature of online and offline abuse, threats and violence experienced by journalists at Aotearoa New Zealand's largest news media company, Stuff. All respondents had experienced abuse, violence and/or threats, which they widely considered to be part of the job, but women received more identity and appearance-based abuse and men experienced more in-person threats of, and actual violence. Gender plays a part in how the journalists cope with the abrasive abuse received because of their job, with many more women and particularly Māori women considering leaving the profession. In line with calls for more intersectional analysis of journalists' workplace experiences, our study considers the complex and nuanced ways that ethnicity intersects with gender to shape Māori and Pākehā journalists' encounters with abuse, threats and violence. From Deliberation to Headlines: Media Coverage and Framing of the 2022 Luxembourg Climate Citizens' Assembly (Klima-Biergerrot) Climate Citizens' Assemblies (CCAs) have become a valuable tool for directly involving citizens in addressing the pressing challenges posed by the climate crisis. Central to their legitimacy is their capacity to engage a broad audience with the complexities of participatory and environmental politics. In this respect, the media plays a crucial role in in influencing whether and how CCAs are portrayed. Recognizing a lack of research connecting media and (C)CAs, this study aims to advance the research agenda through a case study of the Luxembourgish Klima Biergerrot (KBR). Through an analysis of 120 media pieces, we aim to better understand which factors influence both the volume and framing of a CCA in media discourse, through a case study of the Luxembourgish Klima-Biergerrot (KBR). Our findings suggest are three-fold. First, coverage tends to be more extensive and positive when the media focuses on the CCA's outcomes rather than procedural aspects. Second, media outletswith left-leaning ideologies tend to provide more extensive coverage but frame the CCA more negatively compared to right-leaning counterparts. Third, while the gender of journalists does not affect the extent of the coverage, if influences the framing: women journalists tend to present CCAs more positively. Feminist studies of the media have shown different degrees of gender inequality in journalism organizations. Drawing on the notions of field and gendered habitus, the authors of this study conducted in-depth interviews with 30 Chinese women journalists to explore their experiences of digital journalism production, their survival logic in the field, the associated gender power relationships, and the reconstruction of 'Pink Ghetto' in the digital news field. The research shows that women journalists with more opportunities for work and career development while generating various gender-related challenges related to blurred boundaries between work and family life, deviations from career paths, and the risks of using digital platforms. The study explains how women journalists' identities negotiate between the gendered habitus and the professional identity. Those journalists construct multiple identities by adopting four strategies, namely 'strong gender', 'weak gender', 'de-gendering', and 'trans-gender', which proposed a framework of identity negotiation. Brazilian television's efforts to reduce gender inequality in sports journalism are well known. Since 2021, women have been taking on roles that were previously exclusive to men, such as narrating soccer matches. This article starts from the hypothesis that printed newspapers are going against the trend seen in sports television journalism. To achieve the objectives, 1,184 publications from the sports sections of the country's three main newspapers - O Globo, Folha de S. Paulo and Estado de S. Paulo - were analyzed in July 2020 and July 2021. Of the total number of signed texts, 86.7% were written by men and only 13.3% by women. An even greater asymmetry was recorded in the photojournalism of these sections. Women published 7.9% of the photos compared to 92.1% by men. According to this research that was carried out by the Associação Brasileira de Jornalismo Investigativo (Abraji). In 2022, women journalists were victims of 145 press freedom violations, of which 51% contain stigmatizing speeches that tries to defame and embarrass them as victims. In that way, the objective of this work is to bring new reflections about the violence that the female journalists, mainly, in the virtual context in Brazil suffer. To develop this work we adopted a methodology of bibliographical and documental research. Initially we make a conceptual overview of gender violence and violence against journalists, we bring updated data on the problem in Brazil, and then we discuss some strategies practiced by the Lula government and some networks and organizations in order to prevent, support and welcome this women journalists that lived some vulnerability situation in their professional practice.
