We determined the presumed gender – based on pronouns – and geographic affiliation of the editorial boards for the Journal of Organizational Behavior Management from 2000 through 2022. Over that period, one of five editors was a woman, and all editors had a United States affiliation. Thirty-two percent of the unique associate editors and 28% of the members of the editorial board were women. All associate editors and 94% of the members of the editorial board had a United States affiliation. There was no trend in the percentage of women as editors or associate editors during the review period, but the percentage of women on the board of editors gradually increased over time. We discuss the potential benefits of increasing the number of people of various genders and individuals with non-United States affiliations on the editorial staff, as well as the value of increasing its diversity in other ways. This article examines industry payments to dermatologists from 2017 to 2021 using data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Open Payments database. The study reveals that a total of $278 million in industry payments were made to dermatologists during this period. It emphasizes the importance of dermatologists reviewing their public profiles in the database to ensure accuracy. The article discusses the prevalence of financial relationships between physicians and industry and its implications for patient care. It also explores the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on payments, sex disparities in payment amounts, and the concentration of payments among a small group of top-compensated dermatologists. Swiss writer Annemarie Schwarzenbach arrived in the United States in late August 1936 at the invitation of the American photographer Barbara Hamilton Wright. It was the first of three visits over the next five years, during which Annemarie reported on Roosevelt’s America for a variety of Swiss newspapers and illustrated magazines. Her first road trip through the Rust Belt was a success with her Swiss editors and the two women planned a second in the American South in the Fall of 1937. In late September, they boarded third class on the S.S. Berengaria, bound for New York.1 The effect of Nazi policies was evident among their fellow passengers. This second trip was longer and more carefully planned: three weeks in the American South, taking in Tennessee, Virginia, Alabama, Georgia and the Carolinas, focussing on the plight of sharecroppers, on industrial exploitation and race—the dark underbelly of the cotton belt. They visited black2 and women’s colleges and New Deal flagship projects. Newspapers reported their movements. The two women were supplied with letters of introduction. “Driving a Ford 8, equipped with two Rolleiflex cameras, with three weeks before us, we went in search of the South—the real South of present-day America.”3 The journalistic record survives and Annemarie’s photos have recently been exhibited at the Klee Center in Bern in 2021 and the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art in Charlotte, North Carolina, in 2022. The fairness of decisions made at various stages of the publication process is an important topic in meta-research. Here, based on an analysis of data on the gender of authors, editors and reviewers for 23,876 initial submissions and 7,192 full submissions to the journal eLife, we report on five stages of the publication process. We find that the board of reviewing editors (BRE) is men-dominant (69%) and that authors disproportionately suggest male editors when making an initial submission. We do not find evidence for gender bias when Senior Editors consult Reviewing Editors about initial submissions, but women Reviewing Editors are less engaged in discussions about these submissions than expected by their proportion. We find evidence of gender homophily when Senior Editors assign full submissions to Reviewing Editors (i.e., men are more likely to assign full submissions to other men (77% compared to the base assignment rate to men RE of 70%), and likewise for women (41% compared to women RE base assignment rate of 30%))). This tendency was stronger in more gender-balanced scientific disciplines. However, we do not find evidence for gender bias when authors appeal decisions made by editors to reject submissions. Together, our findings confirm that gender disparities exist along the editorial process and suggest that merely increasing the proportion of women might not be sufficient to eliminate this bias. Measures accounting for women's circumstances and needs (e.g., delaying discussions until all RE are engaged) and raising editorial awareness to women's needs may be essential to increasing gender equity and enhancing academic publication. Gender equity and inclusion has taken center stage in business, science, and policy making. We reflect on three systemic challenges that might hinder the rise of qualified women scholars to leadership positions in business schools: (a) The masculine social structure of business schools, (b) a muddled approach to performance evaluation, and (c) an under-representation of research topics that affect women in the workplace. Drawing on the extant science in gender bias and gender equity, combined with the collective expertise and experience of the author team, we offer 12 actionable solutions for gender-inclusive leadership in business schools. We believe that addressing these challenges could benefit all members, not just women, because it could signal more equitable pathways to multiple business school stakeholders and intended beneficiaries, such as students, donors, practitioners, and policy makers. Background: The growing role of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare, particularly radiology, requires its unbiased and fair development and implementation, starting with the constitution of the scientific community. Purpose: To examine the gender and country distribution among academic editors in leading computer science and AI journals. Material and Methods: This cross-sectional study analyzed the gender and country distribution among editors-in-chief, senior, and associate editors in all 75 Q1 computer science and AI journals in the Clarivate Journal Citations Report and SCImago Journal Ranking 2022. Gender was determined using an open-source algorithm (Gender Guesser™), selecting the gender with the highest calibrated probability. Result: Among 4,948 editorial board members, women were underrepresented in all positions (editors-in-chief/senior editors/associate editors: 14%/18%/17%). The proportion of women correlated positively with the SCImago Journal Rank indicator (? = 0.329; p = .004). The U.S., the U.K., and China comprised 50% of editors, while Australia, Finland, Estonia, Denmark, the Netherlands, the U.K., Switzerland, and Slovenia had the highest women editor representation per million women population. Conclusion: Our results highlight gender and geographic disparities on leading computer science and AI journal editorial boards, with women being underrepresented in all positions and a disproportional relationship between the Global North and South. Yutai huashi (History of Painting from Jade Terrace), published in 1837, is rare among Chinese art-historical texts, not only for its focus on women painters of the imperial period but also for its female authorship. While the text preserves information on women who painted, its acknowledged author, Tang Shuyu, draws connections between women authors (defined broadly here to include both artists and writers) and virtuous women. First, her organization of the text's first five chapters foregrounds the social identities of women painters—a system that hints at their virtue. Second, biographies of women painters who are filial, chaste, and/or faithful appear throughout, but these qualities are emphasized in the "Separate Record" at the book's end, the only section with significant amounts of new writing. Third, the text positions Tang Shuyu as a woman of virtue herself. Tang compiled materials for her book with contributions from her husband, Wang Yuansun, and she establishes herself as a figure deferential to authority, a woman who begins most passages with a source citation and never develops a clear editorial voice. Scholars of the history of Chinese art increasingly use gender as a category of analysis to understand the accomplishments of women artists and patrons as well as representations of female figures. This article analyzes Yutai huashi's gendered subjects and discussions of gender roles as a means of examining both the contributions of women authors and the priorities of Chinese art-historical writers. Considering the undercurrent ideological and epistemological contentions which underlay the project of an aspired Ottoman identity during the Hamidian period and the sociocultural ramifications of the Empire's ambiguous engagement with modernity, this paper attempts a cultural re-reading of the Francoturkish Literary Journal Maarifet (1898-?). Published in Constantinople by a Greek-Orthodox woman, Theodossia Sophroniadou, this journal stands out as typical "product" of a broader transitional discursive framework forged at the aesthetic and epistemological "limbo" between Enlightenment and Romanticism. Focusing on the editor's metaphysical outlook outlined in herearlier essay "The Starry Sky" (1894), on Dieudonnée's short stories and on the magazine's fashion, correspondence and sociability columns, this article draws from Eagleton's seminal study on "the Aesthetic", on Foucault's concept of the "Aesthetics of Existence" and on McNay's sociocentric approach on gender and agency and examines how Maarifet brings forth a declining discourse of anupper class "Aesthetic", the reverberations of which extend well beyond the symbolic and materialdimensions of an upper class femininity and agency to an implicit though eloquent critique both against modern massculture and against positivist strains of Young Turk thought. Background: Gender inequity is still pervasive in academic medicine, including journal publishing. We aimed to ascertain the proportion of women among first and last authors and editors in infectious diseases journals and assess the association between women's editorship and women's authorship while controlling for a journal's impact factor.Methods: In this cross-sectional study, we randomly selected 40 infectious diseases journals (ten from each 2020 impact factor quartile), 20 obstetrics and gynaecology journals (five from each 2020 impact factor quartile), and 20 cardiology journals (five from each 2020 impact factor quartile) that were indexed in Journal Citation Reports, had an impact factor, had retrievable first and last author names, and had the name of more than one editor listed. We retrieved the names of the first and last authors of all citable articles published by the journals in 2018 and 2019 that counted towards their 2020 impact factor and collected the names of all the journals' editors-in-chief, deputy editors, section editors, and associate editors for the years 2018 and 2019. We used genderize.io to predict the gender of each first author, last author, and editor. The outcomes of interest were the proportions of women first authors and women last authors. We assessed the association between women's editorship and women's authorship by fitting quasi-Poisson regression models comprising the variables: the proportion of women last authors or women first authors; the proportion of women editors; the presence of a woman editor-in-chief; and journal 2020 impact factor.Findings: We found 11 027 citable infectious diseases articles, of which 167 (1·5%) had an indeterminable first author gender, 155 (1·4%) had an indeterminable last author gender, and seven (0·1%) had no authors indexed. 5350 (49·3%) of 10 853 first authors whose gender could be determined were predicted to be women and 5503 (50·7%) were predicted to be men. Women accounted for 3788 (34·9%) of 10 865 last authors whose gender could be determined and men accounted for 7077 (65·1%). Of 577 infectious diseases journal editors, 190 (32·9%) were predicted to be women and 387 (67·1%) were predicted to be men. Of the 40 infectious diseases journals, 13 (32·5%) had a woman as editor-in-chief. For infectious diseases journals, the proportion of women editors had a significant effect on women's first authorship (incidence rate ratio 1·32, 95% CI 1·06-1·63; p=0·012) and women's last authorship (1·92, 1·45-2·55; p<0·0001). The presence of a woman editor-in-chief, the proportion of women last or first authors, and the journal's impact factor exerted no effect in these analyses.Interpretation: The proportion of women editors appears to influence the proportion of women last and first authors in the analysed infectious diseases journals. These findings might help to explain gender disparities observed in publishing in academic medicine and suggest a need for revised policies towards increasing women's representation among editors.Funding: The European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases. The editorship of medical journals is a leadership role that can affect recognition and career advancement. We determine the gender representation of the editorial boards of oculoplastic surgery journals in comparison to the proportion of women in oculoplastics societies. The gender composition of the American, European and Asia-Pacific societies of oculoplastic and reconstructive surgery and the editorial boards of their respective society journals were determined with online searches in March 2021. Statistical tests for the equality of proportions were performed. Excluding 44 individuals with missing gender data, the three combined oculoplastics societies comprised 1,230 distinct members, with 29% women. The editorial review boards of the three official society publications comprised 59 medical editors, 22% of which were women. There was no statistically significant difference in the proportion of women editors versus women OPRS members (p =.201) but the study is underpowered to detect a 7% difference. A sensitivity analysis with the missing data did not alter the conclusions. The mean h-index/m-quotient of the women editors was 20.50/0.87 and for the men 21.05/0.84, with no statistically significant difference (p =.903/0.851) Women are underrepresented on the editorial boards of oculoplastic journals. Possible methods to improve gender balance include multicriteria objective decision-making criteria for editor nominations, mentoring peer reviewers that are women, and appointing a journal editor for equity, diversity and inclusion. Background: Surveys of gender diversity in editorial boards of journals have been conducted in several disciplines, but not in andrology. Objectives: The present study was designed to investigate the gender distribution of editorial boards of andrology journals. Methods: A total of eight andrology journals were included in the study, and the gender information and geographical location of editors were identified based on the information obtained from the Internet. Results: A total of 382 editors' gender information was confirmed. Women made up 1 of the 9 editors‐in‐chief (11.1%), 13 of the 68 deputy/associate editors (19.1%), 37 of the 270 editorial/advisory board members (13.7%) and 0 of the 35 other types of editors (0%). There was no significant difference in the journal impact factor between male and female editors‐in‐chief (3.060 ± 1.274 vs 3.842), and no significant association was found between impact factor and the proportion of female editor (Spearman's r = −0.204, P = 0.629). Discussion and conclusion: Andrology‐related journals lacked adequate gender diversity, not all journals reserved reasonable editorial positions for women. Besides, increased impact factor did not bring additional gender bias. Women should be given more reasonable seats to improve gender diversity in andrology‐related journals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
