Understanding the aerodynamic performance of scaled-down models is vital for providing crucial insights into wind energy optimization. In this study, the aerodynamic performance of a scaled-down model (12%) was investigated. This validates the findings of the unsteady aerodynamic experiment (UAE) test sequence H. UAE tests provide information on the configuration and conditions of wind tunnel testing to measure the pressure coefficient distribution on the blade surface and the aerodynamic performance of the wind turbine. The computational simulations used shear stress transport and kinetic energy (SST K-Omega) and transitional shear stress transport (SST) turbulence models, with wind speeds ranging from 5 m/s to 25 m/s for the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) Phase VI and 4 m/s to 14 m/s for the 12% scaled-down model. The aerodynamic performance of both cases was assessed at representative wind speeds of 7 m/s for low, 10 m/s for medium, and 20 m/s for high flow speeds for NREL Phase VI and 7 m/s for low, 9 m/s medium, and 12 m/s for the scaled-down model. The results of the SST K-Omega and transitional SST models were aligned with experimental test measurement data at low wind speeds. However, the SST K-Omega torque values exhibited a slight deviation. The transitional SST and SST K-Omega models yielded aerodynamic properties that were comparable to those of the 12% scaled-down model. The torque values obtained from the simulation for the full-scale NREL Phase VI and the scaled-down model were 1686.5 Nm and 0.8349 Nm, respectively. Both turbulence models reliably predicted torque and pressure coefficient values that were consistent with the experimental data, considering specific flow regimes. The pressure coefficient was maximum at the leading edge of the wind turbine blade on the windward side and minimum on the leeward side. The aerodynamic performance of wind turbines is significantly influenced by the design of their blades, which are engineered with advanced aerodynamic airfoils. However, the effectiveness of these designs is compromised by environmental factors such as dust, corrosion, sand, and insects, leading to alterations in blade shape and surface integrity over the turbine's operational period. These changes reduce the aerodynamic efficiency of the turbines. To assess these detrimental effects, this study utilizes a 3D Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model based on the exact blade geometry. A modified version of the universal logarithmic wall function was implemented to quantify the influence of surface roughness. Comparative analyses between clean and rough blade surfaces under varying wind conditions showed that surface degradation significantly impacts the efficiency of wind turbines. Specifically, the findings indicate that surface roughness can lead to a substantial decrease in power output, with losses potentially reaching up to 35% under tested conditions. Notably, this roughness effect exhibits a critical value of , beyond which the impact of roughness becomes negligible. Based on these results, an exponential correlation has been proposed. This study suggests that maintaining smooth blade surfaces or minimizing roughness is crucial for optimal turbine performance, especially under high wind conditions.

The article in the Journal of Fluid Mechanics introduces a new analytical model that combines linear unsteady aerofoil theory with inviscid actuator disc theory to predict the propulsive performance of oscillating foils. This model, which considers flow acceleration at the foil, shows improved agreement with large-eddy simulations. A computational investigation of New MEXICO test cases operating under axial flow conditions is reported. Three wind speed cases (10, 15, 24 m/s) corresponding to three different tip speed ratios (10, 6.67, 4.17) when the turbine operates at 425.1 rpm were considered. ANSYS CFX 2021R1 was employed to perform simulations using Single Reference Frame (SRF) and Multiple Reference Frame (MRF) approaches. The flow field is computed by solving unsteady Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (uRANS) equations coupled with SST k - ω turbulence model and Gamma-Theta transition model. Validation involved comparing CFD-predicted integral quantities, static pressure distributions, and loads with corresponding experimental values demonstrating reasonably good agreement at all three wind speeds. Overall, SRF exhibited slightly better wake predictions (hypothetical), while MRF predictions were closer to measurements for integral quantities, static pressure and loads. A combined experimental and numerical research study is conducted to investigate the complex relationship between the structure and the aerodynamic performances of an Archimedes spiral wind turbine (ASWT). Two ASWTs are considered, a prototypical version and an improved version. It is shown that the latter achieves the best aerodynamic performance when the spread angles at the three sets of blades are α1 = 30°, α2 = 55°, α3 = 60°, respectively and the blade thickness is 4 mm. For a velocity V = 10 m/s, a tip speed ratio (TSR) = 1.58 and 2, the maximum CP values are 0.223 and 0.263 for the prototypical ASWT and improved ASWT, respectively, and the maximum CP enhancement is 17.93%. For V = 10 m/s and TSR = 2, the CP values of the prototypical ASWT and improved ASWT are 0.225 and 0.263, respectively, with an aerodynamic performance enhancement of 16.88%. With the escalating demand for energy, there is a growing focus on decentralized, small-scale energy infrastructure. The success of new turbines in this context is notable. However, many of these turbines do not follow many of the basic ideas established to evaluate their performance, leaving no precise technique or mathematical model. This research developed a Ducted Horizontal-axis Helical Wind Turbine (DHAHWT). The DHAHWT is a duct-mounted helical savonius turbine with a venturi and diffuser to improve flow. Unlike a vertical axis helical savonius turbine, DHAHWT revolves roughly parallel to the wind, making it a horizontal turbine. This complicates mathematical and theoretical analysis. This study created a DHAHWT mathematical model. COMSOL simulations utilizing Menter's Shear Stress Transport model (SST) across an incoming velocity range of 1m/s to 4m/s were used to evaluate the turbine's interaction with the wind. MATLAB was used to train an artificial neural network (ANN) utilizing COMSOL data to obtain greater velocity data. The Mean Average Percentage Error (MAPE) and Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) of ANN data were found to be 3%, indicating high accuracy. Further, using advanced statistical methods the Pearson's correlation coefficient was calculated resulting in a better understanding of the relationship of between incoming velocity and velocity at different sections of the wind turbine. Birds' flight characteristics such as gliding and dynamic soaring have inspired various optimizations and designs of wind turbines. The implementation of biological wing geometries such as the airfoil profile of seabirds has improved wind turbine performance. However, the field can still benefit from further investigation into the aerodynamic characteristics of an inspired design. Therefore, this study evaluated the effect of a seagull airfoil design on the aerodynamic performance of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) Phase VI wind turbine. By replacing its S809 airfoil with the laser-scanned profile of the seagull airfoil, the aerodynamic behavior at key locations of the NREL Phase VI wind turbine blade was numerically simulated in a three-dimensional environment using the Ansys Fluent 2022 R1 computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code. The results were validated against the experimental data, and analysis of the torque outputs, pressure distributions, and velocity profiles that were generated by both the baseline and modified models demonstrated the ability of the seagull airfoil profile to modify regions of minimum and maximum local velocities to achieve highly favorable pressure differentials, significantly increasing the torque output of the NREL Phase VI wind turbine by 350, 539, 823, and 577 Nm at 10, 15, 20, and 25 m/s inlet velocities, respectively. The occurrence of Sub-Synchronous Resonance (SSR) phenomena can be attributed to the interaction that takes place between wind turbine generators and series-compensated transmission lines. The Doubly-Fed Induction Generator (DFIG) is widely recognized as a prevalent generator form employed in wind energy conversion systems. The present paper commences with an extensive exposition on modal analysis techniques employed in a series of compensated wind farms featuring Doubly Fed Induction Generators (DFIGs). The system model encompasses various components, including the aerodynamics of a wind turbine, an induction generator characterized by a sixth-order model, a secondorder two-mass shaft system, a series compensated transmission line described by a fourth-order model, controllers for the Rotor-Side Converter (RSC) and the Grid-Side Converter (GSC) represented by an eighth-order model, and a first-order DC-link model. The technique of eigenvalue-based SSR analysis is extensively utilized in various academic and research domains. The eigenvalue technique depends on the initial conditions of state variables to yield an accurate outcome. The non-iterative approach, previously employed for the computation of initial values of the state variables, has exhibited issues with convergence, lack of accuracy, and excessive computational time. The comparative study evaluates the time-domain simulation outcomes under different wind speeds and compensation levels, along side the eigenvalue analysis conducted using both the suggested and non-iterative methods. This comparative analysis is conducted to illustrate the proposed approach efficacy and precision. The results indicate that the eigenvalue analysis conducted using the proposed technique exhibits more accuracy, as it aligns with the findings of the simulations across all of the investigated instances. The process of validation is executed with the MATLAB program. Within the context of the investigation, it has been found that increasing compensation levels while simultaneously decreasing wind speed leads to system instability. This work is aimed at investigating the capabilities and limits of the mid-fidelity numerical solver DUST for the evaluation of wind turbines aerodynamic performance. In particular, this study was conducted by analysing the benchmarks NREL-5  M W and Phase VI wind turbines, widely investigated in the literature via experimental and numerical activities. The work was started by simulating a simpler configuration of the NREL-5  M W turbine to progressively integrate complexities such as shaft tilt, cone effects and yawed inflow conditions, offering a detailed portrayal of their collective impact on turbine performance. A particular focus was then given to the evaluation of aerodynamic responses from the tower and nacelle, as well as aerodynamic behavior in yawed inflow condition, crucial for optimizing farm layouts. In the second phase, the work was focused on the NREL Phase VI turbine due to the availability of experimental data on this benchmark case. A comparison of DUST simulation results with both experimental data and high-fidelity CFD tools shows the robustness and adaptability of this mid-fidelity solver for these applications, thus opening a new scenario for the use of such mid-fidelity tools for the preliminary design of novel wind turbine configurations or complex environments as wind farms, characterised by robust interactional aerodynamics. Lifting line (LL) analysis of propellers and horizontal-axis turbines requires the axial and circumferential velocities induced by the vortex system representing the blades and the trailing vorticity. If the blades are straight and radial, the induced velocities along the LLs are due only to the trailing vorticity. Accurate two-term approximations for these velocities have been developed from the exact Kawada-Hardin (KH) equations for the velocity field of a doubly infinite helical vortex of constant pitch and radius, Wood et al. (Ocean Engineering, 2021, 235). This paper describes a straightforward extension of the approximations to give the induced velocities anywhere in the equivalent of the rotor plane for a doubly infinite helix. The third term in the approximation of the KH equations is derived and compared to an alternative third term due to Okulov (Journal of Fluid Mechanics, 2004, 521, 319-342). Both three-term approximations produce a small improvement in accuracy over the two-term approximations for a range of operating conditions for turbines and propellers. Okulov's third term is superior. To determine the induced velocities for a singly infinite trailing vortex behind a rotor, an additional equation is derived from the Biot-Savart law. Numerical examples show that the resulting equations provide accurate estimates for the induced velocities over the rotor plane. The main application of the analysis is to account for blade sweep and coning by including the angle between the vortex origin and the control point at which the velocities are required, often the center of each blade element. In this paper, we conduct a comprehensive numerical investigation of a ducted wind turbine under various rotational speeds, focusing on aspects such as boundary layer thickness and momentum thickness. Our study utilizes advanced computational fluid dynamics techniques to assess the intricate flow characteristics and aerodynamics of the ducted wind turbine, providing a detailed understanding of its operation under different speed conditions. The primary objectives are to comprehend the effect of the wind turbine's rotational speed on the boundary layer thickness and the momentum thickness, two crucial parameters influencing the turbine's performance and efficiency. Our findings reveal a significant correlation between the increase in rotational speed and the growth of flow separation, a phenomenon typically indicated by an expansion in the area of negative wall shear stress. This research contributes valuable insights into the behavior of ducted wind turbines at varying rotational speeds, and the acquired knowledge could potentially be utilized in designing and improving wind turbine systems to achieve better performance and enhanced operational efficiency. An accurate prediction of the unsteady loads acting on floating offshore wind turbines (FOWTs) under consideration of wave excitation is crucial for a resource-efficient turbine design. Despite a considerable number of simulation studies in this area, it is still not fully understood which unsteady aerodynamic phenomena have a notable influence on the loads acting on a wind turbine rotor in motion. In the present study, investigations are carried out to evaluate the most relevant unsteady aerodynamic phenomena for a wind turbine rotor in surge motion. As a result, inflow conditions are determined for which a significant influence of these phenomena on the rotor loads can be expected. The experimental and numerical investigations are conducted on a two-bladed wind turbine rotor subjected to a tower-top surge motion. A specialised wind tunnel test rig has been developed to measure the aerodynamic torque response of the rotor subjected to surge motions with moderate frequencies. The torque measurements are compared to two free-vortex-wake (FVW) methods, namely a panel method and a lifting-line method. Unsteady contributions that cannot be captured using quasi-steady modelling have not been detected in either the measurements or the simulations in the covered region of motions ranging from a rotor reduced frequency of 0.55 to 1.09 and with motion velocity amplitudes of up to 9 % of the wind speed. The surge motion frequencies were limited to a moderate range (5 to 10 Hz) due to vibrations occurring in the experiments. Therefore, a numerical study with an extended range of motion frequencies using the panel and the lifting-line method was performed. The results from both FVW methods reveal significant unsteady contributions of the surge motions to the torque and thrust response that have not been reported in the recent literature. Furthermore, the results show the presence of the returning wake effect, which is known from helicopter aerodynamics. Additional simulations of the UNAFLOW scale model and the IEA 15 MW rotor demonstrate that the occurrence of the returning wake effect is independent from the turbine but determined by the ratio of 3P and surge motion frequency. In the case of the IEA 15 MW rotor, a notable impact of the returning wake effect was found at surge motion frequencies in the range of typical wave periods. Finally, a comparison with OpenFAST simulations reveals notable differences in the modelling of the unsteady aerodynamic behaviour in comparison to the FVW methods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Small vertical-axis wind turbines are a promising solution for affordable and clean energy, but their noise emissions present a challenge to public acceptance. Numerous blade designs have been aimed at reducing noise but often come with a decrease in wind turbine aerodynamic efficiency. In this study, the acoustic power and torque of a 5 kW vertical-axis wind turbine (VAWT) were simulated by using different mesh sizes and turbulence models. The simulated torque and noise of the turbine have significant sensitivity to the mesh size, so suitable mesh sizes were determined for the near-wall and rotating regions that can be used as a design reference for future turbines with similar operating conditions. The selection of the turbulence model was found to affect the predicted torque by about 10 % and the predicted tip noise by about 2 dB. The selected mesh size and turbulence model were then applied to simulating the effectiveness of three common noise mitigation techniques: a mask, deflector, and wall roughness. The results showed that deflectors are suitable for noise reduction of small VAWTs. The dielectric barrier discharge plasma actuator has been recognized as a leading technology for controlling fluid flow and has found remarkable applications in wind energy harvesting over the past decade. Wind turbine aerodynamics are critical in this concept and performance is mainly determined by flow controllers, although significant technical progress is still required. This paper examines all the critical studies to investigate the potential application of plasma actuators for airflow control over wind turbines. This approach has been divided into three categories: wind turbine airfoils, horizontal-axis wind turbines and vertical-axis wind turbines aerodynamic performance and generated power. Finally, the potential functions of plasma actuators in current and future wind turbine generators are discussed. These actuators offer promising solutions to increasing power output, minimizing torque fluctuations and enabling self-starting capabilities, particularly in vertical-axis wind turbines. By adjusting blade pitch angles in conjunction with plasma actuators, significant improvements in airflow optimization and power extraction have been demonstrated. Despite the advancements, challenges persist, such as determining optimal actuator placement and overcoming structural limitations, especially concerning 3D effects and high Reynolds numbers. While plasma actuators enhance aerodynamic efficiency, their complexity needs to be balanced against marginal gains in power production, especially in high-megawatt turbines, for which controlling flow at low wind speeds is challenging. Future research must focus on the sustainable integration of plasma actuators, pitch angle adjustments and active control mechanisms to fully exploit the potential of wind energy for a sustainable future. A numerical simulation study on the combination of a Darrieus and a Savonius wind turbine is conducted. Hybrid T-II, T-III, and T-IV turbines are suggested with the same Darrieus turbine T-I. In the T-II and T-III, the Savonius turbine is at the center of the Darrieus turbine, whereas in the T-IV, the Savonius turbine is above the Darrieus turbine. The T-III Savonius turbine has half the radius of that of the T-II turbine. Results reveal that variations of the power coefficients, Cp with the tip speed ratio, TSR for the hybrid turbines have different slopes. It is observed that Cp increases with increasing TSR for the T-II and T-IV and does not decrease for the range of TSRs considered, in contrast with the Cp behavior of the T-I. The design of wind turbines with a vertical axis of rotation is quite simple, which successfully increases the level of efficiency. Existing vane wind turbines have a shortage of currents in the form of negative torque, and installations operating on the Magnus effect have a low lifting force. In this regard, the development and research of installations operating at speeds from 3 m/s, with combined blades with increased work efficiency is an urgent topic. The object of the study is a wind turbine consisting of a system of rotating cylinders and fixed blades operating at low air flow speeds starting from 3 m/s. Numerical studies were carried out using the Ansys Fluent program and the implemented k-ε turbulence model. A special feature of the work is the combined use of two lifting forces: a cylinder and fixed blades, which made it possible to increase the output aerodynamic parameters. Calculations were performed for incoming flow rates of 3 m/s, 9 m/s, 15 m/s and cylinder rotation speeds of 315 rpm, 550 rpm, 720 rpm. It is determined that the period of change of the moment of forces T is 0.5 m/s, which corresponds to 2 revolutions of the wind wheel per minute. It was found that the cylinder rotation frequency in the range from 315 rpm to 720 rpm does not affect the period of change in the moment of forces, but the amplitude of the moment of forces increases with decreasing rotation frequency. The dependences of the rotation speed of the wind wheel on the velocity of the incoming flow, found by the method of sliding grids and 6DOF, are also obtained. It is determined that the installation begins to make revolutions from 3 m/s, with a positive torque of forces. Wind power is a key for decarbonizing economies. Yet, wind turbines can produce negative environmental externalities. These include bird collisions and disamenities for residents. Setback distances for onshore wind turbines to settlements and bird nests are a common policy instrument to address these externalities. In this paper, we evaluate the cost-effectiveness of setback distances. We use a spatially-explicit model to investigate the social costs of different options for setbacks to settlements and red kite nests. In terms of social costs, we consider production costs and external costs associated with residents' disamenities and red kite impacts given an exogenously set wind energy production target. The model is applied using data for the German State of Saxony. Three key results are: (1) More restrictive setbacks may increase social costs. (2) Uniform red kite setbacks reduce social costs rather than uniform settlement setbacks. Aerodynamic performance of wind turbine governs the overall energy efficiency, which has been an ever-lasting research focus in the field of wind power technology. Due to the coupling effect among the highly complex environmental and structural uncertainties, the practical aerodynamic performance may not be reliably predicted. To aggravate, this performance declines with time in service. It is of great significance to efficiently and reliably assess the impact of uncertain factors and reduce these influences on wind turbine aerodynamic performance. This paper establishes an uncertainty analysis and robustness optimization model of wind turbine aerodynamic performance considering wind speed and pitch angle error uncertainties. An approach combined the no-instrusive probabilistic collocation method is used, and the blade element momentum theory is applied to quantify influences of variable uncertainties on NREL 5 MW wind turbine aerodynamic performance. The optimization target is to reduce the sensitivity of wind turbine aerodynamic performance to uncertainties, as well as maintain capture power. The results show that the wind turbine aerodynamic and mechanical performance will be greatly affected with uncertain factors. By optimizing and adjusting wind turbine rotor speed and blade pitch angle, the wind turbine rotor power and thrust load variation can be reduced to 9.14% and 9.36%, respectively, which indeed reduces the uncertainty effects. Limited by scaling effects, the physical model tests of FOWTs (floating offshore wind turbines) cannot simulate the aerodynamic loads on rotors correctly. To solve this problem, the real-time hybrid model tests in wind tunnels were developed and provided a feasible solution for the aerodynamic simulation. To perform the wind tunnel tests, the design of aerodynamic equivalent rotor models is most critical. In this study, an innovative methodology of aerodynamic equivalent design for the wind turbine rotors is developed based on GA (genetic algorithm). The NREL (National Renewable Energy Laboratory) 5 MW and DTU (Technical University of Denmark) 10 MW rotors are employed for the case studies to validate the proposed methodology. According to the results, the model-scale aerodynamic thrust performance can be accurately matched with the prototype in the entire region between cut-in and cut-out wind speeds, which allows the rotor model to provide correct thrust at different wind speeds. The variance of the aerodynamic torque with the wind speeds for the developed model is also in good agreement with the prototype, which could be beneficial for the design of the model-scale active pitch control strategy. Ice formation on structures like wind turbine blade airfoils significantly reduces their aerodynamic efficiency. The presence of ice on airfoils causes deformation in their geometry and an increase in their surface roughness, enhancing turbulence, particularly on the suction side of the airfoil at high angles of attack. An approach for understanding this phenomenon and assessing its impact on wind turbine operation is modeling and simulation. In this contribution, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) study is conducted using FENSAP-ICE 2022 R1 software available in the ANSYS package. The objective was to evaluate the influence of surface roughness modeling (Shin et al. and beading models) in combination with different turbulence models (Spalart–Allmaras and k-ω shear stress transport) on the estimation of the aerodynamic performance losses of wind turbine airfoils not only under rime ice conditions but also considering the less studied case of glaze ice. Moreover, the behavior of the commonly less explored pressure and skin friction coefficients is examined in the clean and iced airfoil scenarios. As a result, the iced profile experiences higher drag and lower lift than in the no-ice conditions, which is explained by modifying skin friction and pressure coefficients by ice. Overall, the outcomes of both turbulence models are similar, showing maximum differences not higher than 10% in the simulations for both ice regimes. However, it is demonstrated that the influence of blade roughness was critical and cannot be disregarded in ice accretion simulations on wind turbine blades. In this context, the beading model has demonstrated an excellent ability to manage changes in roughness throughout the ice accretion process. On the other hand, the widely used roughness model of Shin et al. could underestimate the lift and overestimate the drag coefficients of the wind turbine airfoil in icy conditions. In marine applications, the scaled wind turbine model (SWTM) based aerodynamic testing apparatus is regarded as one of the most effective approaches to predict the aerodynamic performance of offshore floating wind turbines (OFWTs). To fully disclose the aerodynamics of OFWTs, such kind of apparatus should meet two design requirements: (1) accurate representation of the aerodynamic characteristics of reference wind turbines and (2) reasonable reproduction of the environmental factors from real-world wind-wave-coupled field. Baring with these considerations, the authors propose a cost-effective SWTM-based aerodynamic testing apparatus, which consists of an innovative SWTM, a wind-wave simulator (WWS) and a data acquisition and analyses system. The proposed SWTM is featured by a double-deck tower, which satisfies the requirements of similarity in geometry, stiffness and mass, and a set of redesigned blades. The proposed WWS is capable of simulating both the time-varying inflow wind and the wave-induced platform motions through a wind field generator and a motion simulator. Based on the developed apparatus, a series of aerodynamic tests are conducted to validate the effectiveness of the apparatus design. A CFD-based assessment and validation of the NREL Phase-VI Sequence-S rotor at seven wind speeds presented here. The ability of a three-dimensional, unstructured, unsteady RANS solver in successfully predicting the wind flow interactions with a rotating, twisted and tapered rotor is described. The uRANS equations were coupled with SST κ-ω turbulence model and a correlation-based Gamma-Theta transition model. The simulations were performed in ANSYS CFX using both Single Reference Frame (SRF) and Multiple Reference Frame (MRF) modelling approaches. A good agreement with measurements is observed at six of seven wind speeds when comparing the integral quantities, the spanwise and chordwise distributions. The only exception is the 10 m/s wind speed case, attributed to the onset of a massive leading edge stall around the mid-span region. The aerodynamics of a floating wind turbine was analyzed, and the results were applied to a wake model by introducing a modified NOJ model. In addition, the effect of the 6-DOFs characteristics on the wind farm optimization is examined by comparing the platform type (fixed and floating) and wake models (NOJ model and modified NOJ model). The unsteady vortex-lattice method (UVLM) is used to analyze the aerodynamic characteristics of a floating wind turbine. The relationship between the 6-DOFs motion and power performance is validated through theoretical analysis. This study proposes a modified NOJ model to consider the multiwake effect of a floating wind farm. The results demonstrate that the conventional layout optimization method has an error in the layout position and power performance due to the characteristics of a floating wind turbine. To shed light on the effect of the icing phenomenon on the vertical-axis wind turbine (VAWT) wake characteristics, we present a high-fidelity computational fluid dynamics simulation of the flow field of H-Darrieus turbine under the icing conditions. To address continuous geometry alteration due to the icing and predefined motion of the VAWT, a pseudo-steady approach proposed by Baizhuma et al. ["Numerical method to predict ice accretion shapes and performance penalties for rotating vertical axis wind turbines under icing conditions," J. Wind Eng. Ind. Aerodyn. 216, 104708 (2021)] was implemented, which enables the utilization of appropriate approaches for handling turbine rotation and turbulence prediction for each solver. Proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) was utilized to perform a deep analysis of the wake and aerodynamics of the wind turbine for the clean and iced turbines with large eddy simulation turbulence method. Icing causes the leading edge vortex and trailing edge vortex to separate faster than the clean case resulting in a steeper drop in the power coefficient. As for POD modes, those of the streamwise component of velocity illustrated more difference in the amount of modal energy especially at the first modes proving that the icing phenomenon mainly affects the vortex shedding of the flow structures with larger energy and size. The modes of the transversal component of velocity of the clean and iced cases demonstrated more similarity in essence, which could also be understood from the accumulated energy curve. Blade element momentum theory is widely used for predicting wind turbine aerodynamic performance. Unfortunately, power and thrust coefficients predicted by momentum theory deviated dramatically from the experimental data when the value of the axial induction factor was more significant than 0.5. To solve this problem and to increase the accuracy of the prediction, correction for the high value of the axial induction factor must be applied. Using BEM theory, this paper uses analytical prediction for power output compared with different existing correction models used to improve the basic calculation of the turbine power output. The results are compared to experimental measurement results for a small wind turbine. Considering all the comparisons, we note minor differences in the results between the Modified ABS and Buhl models on the one hand and between the Spera and Wilson models on the other, that matches our measurements best. Wind turbine aerodynamic interactions within wind farms lead to significant energy losses. Optimizing the flow between turbines presents a promising solution to mitigate these losses. While analytical models offer a fundamental approach to understanding aerodynamic interactions, further development and refinement of these models are imperative. We propose a simplified analytical model that combines the Gaussian wake model and the cylindrical vortex induction model to evaluate the interaction between wake and induction zones in 3.5 MW wind turbines with 328 m spacing. The model's validation is conducted using field data from a nacelle-mounted LiDAR system on the downstream turbine. The 'Direction to Hub' parameter facilitates a comparison between the model predictions and LiDAR measurements at distances ranging from 50 m to 300 m along the rotor axis. Overall, the results exhibit reasonable agreement in flow trends, albeit with discrepancies of up to 15° in predicting peak interactions. These deviations are attributed to the single-hat Gaussian shape of the wake model and the absence of wake expansion consideration, which can be revisited to improve model fidelity. The 'Direction to Hub' parameter proves valuable for model validation and LiDAR calibration, enabling a detailed flow analysis between turbines. This work introduces automated wind turbine optimization techniques based on full aero‐servo‐elastic models and investigates the potential of trailing edge flaps to reduce the levelized cost of energy (LCOE) of wind turbines. The Wind Energy with Integrated Servo‐control (WEIS) framework is improved to conduct the presented research. Novel methods for the generic implementation and tuning of trailing edge flap devices and their controller are also introduced. Primary flap and controller parameters are optimized to demonstrate potential maximum blade tip deflection reductions of 21%. Concurrent design optimization (i.e., co‐design) of a novel segmented wind turbine blade with trailing edge flaps and its controller is then conducted to demonstrate blade cost savings of 5%. Additionally, rotor diameter co‐design optimization is demonstrated to reduce the LCOE by 1.3% without significant load increases to the tower. These results demonstrate the efficacy of control co‐design optimization using trailing edge flaps, and the entirety of this work provides a foundation for numerous control co‐design‐oriented studies for distributed aerodynamic control devices. The simplest aerodynamic model of horizontal-axis wind turbines is the blade element momentum theory, which assumes that the blades behave as airfoils, but a correct two-dimensional representation is an infinite cascade of lifting bodies. This study analyzes the conventional and impulse forms of the forces on cascades of airfoils at spacings and pitch angles typical of wind turbine applications. OpenFOAM software was used to simulate steady, incompressible flow at a Reynolds number of 6 × 10 6 through cascades of NACA 0012 airfoils. The force equations agree well (less than 1% error) with the forces determined directly from OpenFOAM for four spacing ratios. We concentrate on the "wake vorticity" term, which is ignored in blade element momentum analysis. At a pitch angle of 90°, this term balances the viscous drag when the angle of attack is zero. At zero pitch, which models the outer region of a wind turbine blade at a high tip speed ratio, the term can account for 27% of the axial thrust when the angle of attack is about 4°. The normal force equation, like the angular momentum equation for wind turbines, has no viscous term, which forces the body drag to contribute to the circulation in the wake. It is shown that the airfoil assumption is conservative in that cascade elements have higher lift-to-drag ratios than airfoils at the same angle of attack. The present work aims to study the aerodynamic characteristics of a newly designed three-bladed horizontal-axis wind turbine (HAWT) using the Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) method. The blade geometry is designed using an improved Blade Element Momentum (BEM) method to be similar in size to the Ampair300 wind turbine. The shear stress transport (SST) transition turbulence model closure is utilized to solve the steady state three-dimensional Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations. The Ansys Fluent CFD solver is used to solve the problem. Then, a comparison between the two turbines' operating conditions is conducted by monitoring the pressure coefficient, pressure contours and velocity vectors at five different radial positions. The analysis of the Tip Speed Ratio (TSR) effects on the turbine efficiency and on the flow behavior on the blade and in the near wake is carried out. Abstract This article proposes an efficient correction model that enables the extension of the blade element momentum method (BEM) for swept blades. Standard BEM algorithms, assuming a straight blade in the rotor plane, cannot account for the changes in the induction system introduced by blade sweep. The proposed extension corrects the axial induction regarding two aspects: the azimuthal displacement of the trailed vorticity system and the induction of the curved bound vortex on itself. The extended algorithm requires little additional processing work and maintains BEM's streamtube independent approach. The proposed correction model is applied to simulations of swept blade geometries based on the IEA 15 MW reference wind turbine. Results show good agreement with lifting line simulations that inherently can account for the swept blade geometry. Blade sweep couples bending and torsion deformations by curving the blade axis in the inplane direction. As such, it can be used to passively alleviate loads and, thus, aeroelastically tailor wind turbine blades. The implementation of aeroelastic tailoring techniques, and the aeroelastic analysis in general, becomes increasingly significant with the size of wind turbine rotors continually rising. Due to its low computing complexity, BEM remains a crucial tool in the aerodynamic and aeroelastic analysis of wind turbine rotors. Thus, the proposed correction model contributes to a fast and accurate evaluation of swept blade designs.

Abstract The yaw moment of wind turbine rotors has never been in the focus of wind turbine aerodynamics. With the increasing activities in the development of support structures for Floating Offshore Wind Turbines (FOWT), which passively align with the wind, the interest has shifted, as an accurate determination of the yaw moment is a crucial issue for a successful design of such power plants. A downwind coned rotor is a promising option to increase the yaw moment and therefore the self‐alignment capability of a passively yawing FOWT. Unfortunately, experimental and numerical studies on the estimation of the yaw moment of wind turbine rotors are rare. This is especially the case for downwind coned rotors. The aim of the present work is to provide reliable knowledge in this field. For this purpose, an extensive experimental and numerical study is carried out to determine the yaw moment of a downwind coned rotor. The results obtained from measurements in the wind tunnel are compared to those of simulations using a high fidelity RANS method and a blade element momentum theory (BEMT) method. BEMT is widely applied and can be considered as state of the art for predicting aerodynamic loads on FOWTs. However, the basic assumptions of BEMT do not account for a realistic influence of the skewed wake, so that the application of a correction method is necessary. In this work, the frequently used wake skew correction method based on Pitt and Peters is utilised and its influence on the calculation of the yaw moment is investigated. It is shown that this correction method yields a significant overprediction of the yaw moment in comparison to the measurements and consequently even impairs the quality of the simulation in this case. In contrast to this, the wake‐resolving RANS method is capable of reproducing the measurements with reasonable accuracy and provides valuable insight into the role of the lateral force for the measurement of the yaw moment.

Wind turbine blades experience excessive load due to inaccuracies in the prediction of aerodynamic loads by conventional methods during design, leading to structural failure. The blade element momentum (BEM) method is possibly the oldest and best-known design tool for evaluating the aerodynamic performance of wind turbine blades due to its simplicity and short processing time. As the turbine rotates, the aerofoil lift coefficient enhances, notably in the rotor’s inboard section, relative to the value predicted by 2D experimentation or computational fluid dynamics (CFD) for the identical angle of attack; this is induced by centrifugal pumping action and the Coriolis force, thus delaying the occurrence of stall. This rotational effect is regarded as having a significant influence on the rotor blade’s aerodynamic performance, which the BEM method does not capture, as it depends on 2D aerofoil characteristics. Correction models derived from the traditional hard computing mathematical method are used in the BEM predictions to take into account stall delay. Unfortunately, it has been observed from the earlier literature that these models either utterly fail or inaccurately predict the enhancement in lift coefficient due to stall delay. Consequently, this paper proposes a novel stall delay correction model based on the soft computing technique known as symbolic regression for high-level precise aerodynamic performance prediction by the BEM process. In complement to the correction model for the lift coefficient, a preliminary correction model for the drag coefficient is also suggested. The model is engendered from the disparity in 3D and 2D aerofoil coefficients over the blade length for different wind speeds for the NREL Phase VI turbine. The proposed model’s accuracy is evaluated by validating the 3D aerofoil coefficients computed from the experimental results of a second wind turbine known as the MEXICO rotor.

Penetration of wind power plants (WPPs) in the electric power system will complicate the system load flow analysis. Consequently, the traditional load flow algorithm can no longer be used to find the solution to the load flow problem of such a system. This paper proposes a doubly fed induction generator (DFIG)-based WPP model for a load flow analysis of the electric power system. The proposed model is derived based on the power formulations of the WPP—namely, DFIG power, DFIG power loss, and WPP power output formulas. The model can be applied to various DFIG power factor operating modes. In the present paper, applications of the proposed methods in two representative electric power systems (i.e., IEEE 14-bus and 30-bus systems) have been investigated. In this paper we report about the design and validation of a 1.2 m wind turbine rotor with fixed blade pitch. The wind turbine is a scaled version of the DTU 10 MW. Integrated design of dimensional scaling laws, blade aerodynamics, and turbine control is carried out to reproduce blade loading and interaction with atmospheric boundary layer of the reference turbine, despite challenges posed by the great reduction in chord-based Reynolds number. The rotor is verified with numerical simulations in OpenFAST and wind tunnel testing. The servo-aerodynamic design approach proposed in this article is shown to be successful for small-scale wind turbine models for use in experiments about wakes and floating wind. This study investigated the impact of ice formation on the performance and aerodynamics of a vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT). This is an area that is becoming more prevalent as VAWTs are installed alongside horizontal axis wind turbines (HAWTs) in high altitude areas with cold and wet climates where ice is likely to form. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations were performed on a VAWT without icing in Ansys to understand its performance before introducing ice shapes obtained through the LewInt ice accretion software and repeating simulations in Ansys. These simulations were verified by performing a wind tunnel experiment on a scale VAWT model with and without 3D printed ice shapes attached to the blades. The clean blade simulations found that wind speed had little impact on the performance, while reducing the blade scale severely reduced performance. The ice formation simulations found that increasing the icing time or liquid water content (LWC) led to increased ice thickness. Additionally, glaze ice and rime ice conditions were investigated, and it was found that rime ice conditions that occur in lower temperatures caused more ice to form. The simulations with the attached ice shapes found a maximum reduction in performance of 40%, and the experiments found that the ice shapes made the VAWT unable to produce power. To evaluate novel turbine designs, the wind energy sector extensively depends on computational fluid dynamics (CFD). To use CFD in the design optimization process, where lower-fidelity approaches such as blade element momentum (BEM) are more popular, new tools to increase the accuracy must be developed as the latest wind turbines are larger and the aerodynamics and structural dynamics become more complex. In the present study, a new concurrent aerodynamic shape optimization approach towards multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO) that uses a Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes solver in conjunction with a numerical optimization methodology is introduced. A multidisciplinary design optimization tool called DAFoam is used for the NREL phase VI turbine as a baseline geometry. Aerodynamic design optimizations in terms of five different schemes, namely, cross-sectional shape, pitch angle, twist, chord length, and dihedral optimization are conducted. Pointwise, a commercial mesh generator is used to create the numerical meshes. As the adjoint approach is strongly reliant on the mesh quality, up to 17.8 million mesh cells were employed during the mesh convergence and result validation processes, whereas 2.65 million mesh cells were used throughout the design optimization due to the computational cost. The Sparse Nonlinear OPTimizer (SNOPT) is used for the optimization process in the adjoint solver. The torque in the tangential direction is the optimization's merit function and excellent results are achieved, which shows the promising prospect of applying this approach for transient MDO. This study predicted the motion response and power performance of a floating wind turbine system equipped with a semisubmersible Taida platform, an IEA 15 MW wind turbine, and a 3 × 2 mooring design in the Hsinchu offshore area in the Taiwan Strait. The hydrodynamic properties were calculated using ANSYS-AQWA and STAR-CCM+. The motion equations were solved by OrcaFlex to obtain the motion response and generator power, as well as the dynamics of the mooring system and aerodynamics of the wind turbine. The waves were assumed to share the same direction as the wind. This study compared the mean values and standard deviations of the motion response, generator power, and mooring line tension between the potential- and viscous-flow approaches by considering the combination of seven wind directions and four current directions under two wave conditions in the Hsinchu offshore area. The numerical prediction shows that the viscous effect has a larger impact on the hydrodynamic properties in the heave, roll, and pitch motions. The angle between the leading mooring line of the system and dominant wind direction in the Taiwan Strait, which comes from the northeast, should be from 120° to 180° in order to deliver a relatively favorable performance of the system. Many recent studies show that the performance of Savonius turbines can be considerably increased by using wind deflectors. Axisymmetric deflectors are particularly interesting; they concentrate the wind flow in all directions. This study aims to aerodynamically optimize the truncated cone deflector shape through transient 3D CFD simulations using sliding mesh techniques. To reduce the mesh size and thus the simulation time, symmetrical boundary conditions were applied to rotating body faces. A mesh grid sensitivity study was conducted to define the optimum mesh size. Additionally, hybrid numerical approaches combining coupled and SIMPLE solvers were particularly influential in reducing computational time. Concave- and convex-arced-shaped faces deflectors were compared to the original truncated cone deflector, showing an increase in the performance for the convex type and a decrease for the concave one. Then, eight cases involving convex spline shape deflectors were simulated. All these deflectors had an equal volume to the original truncated cone deflector. One of the cases showed a 20% average increase in the performance over the original deflector. This result shows the importance of the geometrical shapes in the design of axisymmetric deflectors. Continuous improvement of wind turbines represent an effective way of achieving green energy and reducing dependence on fossil fuel. Conventional lift-type horizontal axis wind turbines, which are widely used, are designed to run under high wind speed to obtain a high efficiency. Aiming to use the low-speed wind in urban areas, a novel turbine, which is called the Archimedes Spiral Wind Turbine (abbreviated as ASWT), was recently proposed for low-speed wind applications. In the current work, a numerical simulation on the five ASWT rotors with different blade angles was carried out, which were performed to predict the detailed aerodynamic performance and wake characteristics. The results show that the ASWT rotor with a large blade angle has a wider operating tip speed ratio range and a higher tip speed ratio point of maximum power coefficient within a certain range, and yet the ASWT rotor with the larger blade angle has a higher thrust coefficient. Additionally, the ASWT rotor with a large blade angle usually has a large power coefficient and thrust coefficient fluctuation amplitude. On the other hand, the ASWT rotor with a small blade angle permits the undisturbed free stream to pass through the rotor blades more easily than that with a large blade angle. This causes a stronger blockage effect for the ASWT rotor with a large blade angle. Moreover, the blade angle also has a great effect on the shape of the vortex structure. The blade tip vortex of the fixed-angle ASWT rotors is more stable than those of the variable-angle ASWT rotors. The hub vortex of the ASWT rotors with a large blade angle is stronger than those with a small blade angle. Surface grooves have demonstrated the capability to mitigate laminar separation bubbles and enhance airfoil aerodynamic performance. However, wind turbine operation introduces dynamic effects that significantly impact airfoil behavior, leading to substantial deviations from static conditions. Numerical simulations were carried out to discuss the effectiveness of surface groove structures in controlling separation bubbles under dynamic conditions and their potential to enhance unsteady aerodynamics. The influence of groove parameters (depth, width, position) on the NACA 4415 airfoil's boundary layer attributes and unsteady aerodynamic properties are analyzed across various pitching amplitudes and reduced frequencies. It is found that the position of groove structures under dynamic conditions is crucial, that groove structures located ahead of separation bubbles on the airfoil surface can effectively eliminate the separation bubbles, and their control effectiveness is superior to that under static conditions. Well-designed groove structures can reduce the airfoil's maximum lift, drag, and moment coefficients under dynamic conditions. They also reduce the aerodynamic hysteresis effect and improve the aerodynamic damping characteristics. In order to address the energy problem and increase wind turbine efficiency, this study suggests a fusion tip shape. The construction permits blade tip folding angle adjustment. The numerical computation approach uses multiple working conditions, comparative experimental tests, and the Navier-Stokes equations with Reynolds averaging. This comprehensive research investigates the effects of the fusion tip construction on the aerodynamics of wind turbines. A comparison of wind tunnel test results with numerical calculations is also done. The results of wind tunnel aerodynamic tests are being compared to numerical simulations. The fusion tip construction enhances wind turbine aerodynamics, according to the results. It boosts turbulent kinetic energy and mean pressure in the wind turbine blade cross-section, increasing the wind energy utilization coefficient C P by 15.05%. The wind turbine blades' mean axial velocity and vorticity decrease by up to 26.07% and 31.28%, respectively. The study also found vortex volume, axial velocity, blade cross-section pressure, and wake turbulence kinetic energy distribution patterns on wind turbine blades.
