Aims. We produce a clean and well-characterised catalogue of objects within 100 pc of the Sun from the Gaia Early Data Release 3. We characterise the catalogue through comparisons to the full data release, external catalogues, and simulations. We carry out a first analysis of the science that is possible with this sample to demonstrate its potential and best practices for its use., Methods. Theselection of objects within 100 pc from the full catalogue used selected training sets, machine-learning procedures, astrometric quantities, and solution quality indicators to determine a probability that the astrometric solution is reliable. The training set construction exploited the astrometric data, quality flags, and external photometry. For all candidates we calculated distance posterior probability densities using Bayesian procedures and mock catalogues to define priors. Any object with reliable astrometry and a non-zero probability of being within 100 pc is included in the catalogue., Results. We have produced a catalogue of 331 312 objects that we estimate contains at least 92% of stars of stellar type M9 within 100 pc of the Sun. We estimate that 9% of the stars in this catalogue probably lie outside 100 pc, but when the distance probability function is used, a correct treatment of this contamination is possible. We produced luminosity functions with a high signal-to-noise ratio for the main-sequence stars, giants, and white dwarfs. We examined in detail the Hyades cluster, the white dwarf population, and wide-binary systems and produced candidate lists for all three samples. We detected local manifestations of several streams, superclusters, and halo objects, in which we identified 12 members of Gaia Enceladus. We present the first direct parallaxes of five objects in multiple systems within 10 pc of the Sun., Conclusions. We provide the community with a large, well-characterised catalogue of objects in the solar neighbourhood. This is a primary benchmark for measuring and understanding fundamental parameters and descriptive functions in astronomy.

Seeing pristine material from the donor star in a Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) explosion can reveal the nature of the binary system. In this paper, we present photometric and spectroscopic observations of SN 2020esm, one of the best-studied SNe of the class of "super-Chandrasekhar" SNe Ia (SC SNe Ia), with data obtained $-12$ to +360 days relative to peak brightness, obtained from a variety of ground- and space-based telescopes. Initially misclassified as a Type II supernova, SN 2020esm peaked at $M_{B} = -19.9$ mag, declined slowly ($\Delta m_{15}(B) = 0.92$ mag), and had particularly blue UV and optical colors at early times. Photometrically and spectroscopically, SN 2020esm evolved similarly to other SC SNe Ia, showing the usual low ejecta velocities, weak intermediate mass elements (IMEs), and the enhanced fading at late times, but its early spectra are unique. Our first few spectra (corresponding to a phase of $\gtrsim$10~days before peak) reveal a nearly-pure carbon/oxygen atmosphere during the first days after explosion. This composition can only be produced by pristine material, relatively unaffected by nuclear burning. The lack of H and He may further indicate that SN 2020esm is the outcome of the merger of two carbon/oxygen white dwarfs (WDs). Modeling its bolometric light curve, we find a $^{56}$Ni mass of $1.23^{+0.14}_{-0.14}$ M$_{\odot}$ and an ejecta mass of $1.75^{+0.32}_{-0.20}$ M$_{\odot}$, in excess of the Chandrasekhar mass. Stars with convective envelopes display magnetic activity, which decreases over time due to the magnetic braking of the star. This age-dependence of magnetic activity is well-studied for younger stars, but the nature of this dependence for older stars is not well understood. This is mainly because absolute stellar ages for older stars are hard to measure. However, relatively accurate stellar ages have recently come into reach through asteroseismology. In this work we present X-ray luminosities, which are a measure for magnetic activity displayed by the stellar coronae, for 24 stars with well-determined ages older than a gigayear. We find 14 stars with detectable X-ray luminosities and use these to calibrate the age-activity relationship. We find a relationship between stellar X-ray luminosity, normalized by stellar surface area, and age that is steeper than the relationships found for younger stars, with an exponent of $-2.80 \pm 0.72$. Previous studies have found values for the exponent of the age-activity relationship ranging between -1.09 to -1.40, dependent on spectral type, for younger stars. Given that there are recent reports of a flattening relationship between age and rotational period for old cool stars, one possible explanation is that we witness a strong steepening of the relationship between activity and rotation., 16 pages, 5 figures, 5 tables, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Hydrogen-rich supernovae, known as Type II (SNe II), are the most common class of explosions observed following the collapse of the core of massive stars. We use analytical estimates and population synthesis simulations to assess the fraction of SNe II progenitors that are expected to have exchanged mass with a companion prior to explosion. We estimate that 1/3 to 1/2 of SN II progenitors have a history of mass exchange with a binary companion before exploding. The dominant binary channels leading to SN II progenitors involve the merger of binary stars. Mergers are expected to produce a diversity of SN II progenitor characteristics, depending on the evolutionary timing and properties of the merger. Alternatively, SN II progenitors from interacting binaries may have accreted mass from their companion, and subsequently been ejected from the binary system after their companion exploded. We show that the overall fraction of SN II progenitors that are predicted to have experienced binary interaction is robust against the main physical uncertainties in our models. However, the relative importance of different binary evolutionary channels is affected by changing physical assumptions. We further discuss ways in which binarity might contribute to the observed diversity of SNe II by considering potential observational signatures arising from each binary channel. For supernovae which have a substantial H-rich envelope at explosion (i.e., excluding Type IIb SNe), a surviving non-compact companion would typically indicate that the supernova progenitor star was in a wide, non-interacting binary. A neo-neutron star is a hot neutron star that has just become transparent to neutrinos. In a core collapse supernova or accretion induced collapse of a white dwarf the neo-neutron star phase directly follows the proto-neutron star phase, about 30 to 60 seconds after the initial collapse. It will also be present in a binary neutron star merger in the case the "born-again" hot massive compact star does not immediately collapse into a black hole. Eddington or even super-Eddington luminosities are present for some time. A neo-neutron star produced in a core collapse supernova is not directly observable but the one produced by a binary merger, likely associated with an off-axis short gamma-ray burst, may be observable for some time as well as when produced in the accretion induced collapse of a white dwarf. We present a first step in the study of this neo-neutron star phase in a spherically symmetric configuration, thus neglecting fast rotation, and also neglecting the effect of strong magnetic fields. We put particular emphasis on determining how long the star can sustain a near-Eddington luminosity and also show the importance of positrons and contraction energy during neo-neutron star phase. Context. Gaia Data Release 2 provides high-precision astrometry and three-band photometry for about 1.3 billion sources over the full sky. The precision, accuracy, and homogeneity of both astrometry and photometry are unprecedented. Aims. We highlight the power of the Gaia DR2 in studying many fine structures of the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram (HRD). Gaia allows us to present many different HRDs, depending in particular on stellar population selections. We do not aim here for completeness in terms of types of stars or stellar evolutionary aspects. Instead, we have chosen several illustrative examples. Methods. We describe some of the selections that can be made in Gaia DR2 to highlight the main structures of the Gaia HRDs. We select both field and cluster (open and globular) stars, compare the observations with previous classifications and with stellar evolutionary tracks, and we present variations of the Gaia HRD with age, metallicity, and kinematics. Late stages of stellar evolution such as hot subdwarfs, post-AGB stars, planetary nebulae, and white dwarfs are also analysed, as well as low-mass brown dwarf objects. Results. The Gaia HRDs are unprecedented in both precision and coverage of the various Milky Way stellar populations and stellar evolutionary phases. Many fine structures of the HRDs are presented. The clear split of the white dwarf sequence into hydrogen and helium white dwarfs is presented for the first time in an HRD. The relation between kinematics and the HRD is nicely illustrated. Two different populations in a classical kinematic selection of the halo are unambiguously identified in the HRD. Membership and mean parameters for a selected list of open clusters are provided. They allow drawing very detailed cluster sequences, highlighting fine structures, and providing extremely precise empirical isochrones that will lead to more insight in stellar physics. Conclusions. Gaia DR2 demonstrates the potential of combining precise astrometry and photometry for large samples for studies in stellar evolution and stellar population and opens an entire new area for HRD-based studies.

We present detailed ultraviolet, optical, and near-infrared light curves of the Type Ia supernova (SN) 2012fr, which exploded in the Fornax cluster member NGC 1365. These precise high-cadence light curves provide a dense coverage of the flux evolution from −12 to +140 days with respect to the epoch of B-band maximum (tBmax). Supplementary imaging at the earliest epochs reveals an initial slow and nearly linear rise in luminosity with a duration of ∼2.5 days, followed by a faster rising phase that is well reproduced by an explosion model with a moderate amount of 56Ni mixing in the ejecta. From our analysis of the light curves, we conclude that: (i) the explosion occurred 1800 Å) luminosity was 16.5 ± 0.6 days, (iii) the supernova suffered little or no host-galaxy dust reddening, (iv) the peak luminosity in both the optical and near-infrared was consistent with the bright end of normal Type Ia diversity, and (v) 0.60 ± 0.15 M⊙ of 56Ni was synthesized in the explosion. Despite its normal luminosity, SN 2012fr displayed unusually prevalent high-velocity Ca II and Si II absorption features, and a nearly constant photospheric velocity of the Si II λ6355 line at ∼12,000 km s-1 that began ∼5 days before tBmax. We also highlight some of the other peculiarities in the early phase photometry and the spectral evolution. The nebular-epoch spectrum of the rapidly declining, "transitional" type Ia supernova (SN) 2007on showed double emission peaks, which have been interpreted as indicating that the SN was the result of the direct collision of two white dwarfs. The spectrum can be reproduced using two distinct emission components, one red-shifted and one blue shifted. These components are similar in mass but have slightly different degrees of ionization. They recede from one another at a line-of-sight speed larger than the sum of the combined expansion velocities of their emitting cores, thereby acting as two independent nebulae. While this configuration appears to be consistent with the scenario of two white dwarfs colliding, it may also indicate an off-centre delayed detonation explosion of a near Chandrasekhar-mass white dwarf. In either case, broad emission line widths and a rapidly evolving light curve can be expected for the bolometric luminosity of the SN. This is the case for both SNe 2007on and 2011iv, also a transitional SN Ia which exploded in the same elliptical galaxy, NGC 1404. Although SN 2011iv does not show double-peaked emission line profiles, the width of its emission lines is such that a two-component model yields somewhat better results than a single-component model. Most of the mass ejected is in one component, however, which suggests that SN 2011iv was the result of the off-centre ignition of a Chandrasekhar-mass white dwarf., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We identify stars in the $\delta$ Sct instability strip that do not pulsate in p modes at the 50-$\mu$mag limit, using Kepler data. Spectral classification and abundance analyses from high-resolution spectroscopy allow us to identify chemically peculiar stars, in which the absence of pulsations is not surprising. The remaining stars are chemically normal, yet they are not $\delta$ Sct stars. Their lack of observed p modes cannot be explained through any known mechanism. However, they are mostly distributed around the edges of the $\delta$ Sct instability strip, which allows for the possibility that they actually lie outside the strip once the uncertainties are taken into account. We investigated the possibility that the non-pulsators inside the instability strip could be unresolved binary systems, having components that both lie outside the instability strip. If misinterpreted as single stars, we found that such binaries could generate temperature discrepancies of $\sim$300 K -- larger than the spectroscopic uncertainties, and fully consistent with the observations. After these considerations, there remains one chemically normal non-pulsator that lies in the middle of the instability strip. This star is a challenge to pulsation theory. However, its existence as the only known star of its kind indicates that such stars are rare. We conclude that the $\delta$ Sct instability strip is pure, unless pulsation is shut down by diffusion or another mechanism, which could be interaction with a binary companion., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures of which 4 are in colour. Aims. We present and study the spectroscopic and photometric evolution of the type Ia supernova (SN Ia) 2010ev. Methods. We obtain and analyze multiband optical light curves and optical/near-infrared spectroscopy at low and medium resolution spanning -7 days to +300 days from the B-band maximum. Results. A photometric analysis shows that SN 2010ev is a SN Ia of normal brightness with a light-curve shape of Δm15(B) = 1.12 ± 0.02 and a stretch s = 0.94 ± 0.01 suffering significant reddening. From photometric and spectroscopic analysis, we deduce a color excess of E(B - V) = 0.25 ± 0.05 and a reddening law of Rv = 1.54 ± 0.65. Spectroscopically, SN 2010ev belongs to the broad-line SN Ia group, showing stronger than average Si II λ6355 absorption features.We also find that SN 2010ev is a high velocity gradient SN with ͘vSi = 164 ± 7 km s-1 d-1. The photometric and spectral comparison with other supernovae shows that SN 2010ev has similar colors and velocities to SN 2002bo and SN 2002dj. The analysis of the nebular spectra indicates that the [Fe II] λ7155 and [Ni II] λ7378 lines are redshifted, as expected for a high velocity gradient supernova. All these common intrinsic and extrinsic properties of the high velocity gradient (HVG) group are different from the low velocity gradient (LVG) normal SN Ia population and suggest significant variety in SN Ia explosions., Facultad de Ciencias Astronómicas y Geofísicas, Instituto de Astrofísica de La Plata

AM CVn binaries are hydrogen deficient compact binaries with an orbital period in the 5-65 min range and are predicted to be strong sources of persistent gravitational wave radiation. Using Gaia Data Release 2, we present the parallaxes and proper motions of 41 out of the 56 known systems. Compared to the parallax determined using the HST Fine Guidance Sensor we find that the archetype star, AM CVn, is significantly closer than previously thought. This resolves the high luminosity and mass accretion rate which models had difficulty in explaining. Using Pan-STARRS1 data we determine the absolute magnitude of the AM CVn stars. There is some evidence that donor stars have a higher mass and radius than expected for white dwarfs or that the donors are not white dwarfs. Using the distances to the known AM CVn stars we find strong evidence that a large population of AM CVn stars have still to be discovered. As this value sets the background to the gravitational wave signal of LISA, this is of wide interest. We determine the mass transfer rate for 15 AM CVn stars and find that the majority have a rate significantly greater than expected from standard models. Low-mass stars in the He-core-burning phase (HeCB) play a major role in stellar, galactic, and extragalactic astrophysics. The ability to predict accurately the properties of these stars, however, depends on our understanding of convection, which remains one of the key open questions in stellar modelling. We argue that the combination of the luminosity of the AGB bump (AGBb) and the period spacing of gravity modes (DP) during the HeCB phase, provides us with a decisive test to discriminate between competing models of these stars. We use the MESA, BaSTI, and PARSEC stellar evolution codes to model a typical giant star observed by Kepler. We explore how various near-core-mixing scenarios affect the predictions of the above-mentioned constraints, and we find that DP depends strongly on the prescription adopted. Moreover we show that the detailed behaviour of DP shows the signature of sharp variations in the Brunt-Vaisala frequency, which could potentially give additional information about near-core features. We find evidence for the AGBb among Kepler targets, and a first comparison with observations shows that, even if standard models are able to reproduce the luminosity distribution, no standard model can account for satisfactorily the period spacing of HeCB stars. Our analysis allows us to outline a candidate model to describe simultaneously the two observed distributions: a model with a moderate overshooting region characterized by an adiabatic thermal stratification. We present an analytical model for light echoes (LEs) coming from circumstellar material (CSM) around Type Ia Supernovae (SNe Ia). Using this model we find two spectral signatures at 4100 Å and 6200 Å that are useful to identify LEs during the Lira law phase (between 35 and 80 days after maximum light) coming from nearby CSM at distances of 0.010.25 pc. We analyze a sample of 89 SNe Ia divided into two groups according to their B V decline rate during the Lira law phase, and search for LEs from CSM interaction in the group of SNe with steeper slopes by comparing their spectra with our LE model. We find that a model with LEs + pure extinction from interstellar material (ISM) fits the observed spectra better than a pure ISM extinction model that is constant in time, but we find that a decreasing extinction alone explains the observations better without the need of LEs, possibly implying dust sublimation due to the radiation from the SN., Facultad de Ciencias Astronómicas y Geofísicas, Instituto de Astrofísica de La Plata

Background: The O-17( p,gamma)F-18 reaction affects the production of key isotopes ( e.g., F-18 and O-18) in the explosive hydrogen burning that powers classical novae. Under these explosive conditions, the reaction rate is dominated by contributions from a narrow resonance at E-c.m. = 183 keV and by the combined contributions of direct capture and low-energy tails of broad resonances. At present, the astrophysical reaction rate is not well constrained because of the lack of data in the energy region appropriate to classical novae. Purpose: This study aims at the measurement of the O-17( p,gamma)F-18 reaction cross section in order to determine its reaction rate in the temperature region appropriate to explosive hydrogen burning in novae. Method: The O-17( p,gamma)F-18 reaction cross section was measured using both the prompt detection of the emitted gamma rays and an activation technique. Measurements were carried out at the Laboratory for Underground Nuclear Astrophysics ( Gran Sasso, Italy) where the strongly reduced cosmic-ray-induced background allows for improved sensitivity compared to previous studies. Results: The O-17( p,gamma)F-18 reaction cross section was measured in the range E-c.m. = 160 to 370 keV. The strength of the E-c.m. = 183 keV resonance, omega gamma = 1.67 +/- 0.12 mu eV, was determined with unprecedented precision. The total S factor was obtained through a combined fit of prompt gamma-ray and activation results. An overall global fit including other existing data sets was also carried out and a recommended astrophysical reaction rate is presented. Conclusions: The reaction rate uncertainty attained in this work is now below the required precision for nova models. We verified, following a full set of hydrodynamic nova models, that the abundances of oxygen and fluorine isotopes obtained with the present reaction rate are determined with 10% precision and put firmer constraints on observational signatures of novae events.

Individual distances of 50 nearby planetary nebulae are determined using a variety of methods, but excluding statistical methods or distance scales. These distances, together with a discussion of the sample completeness, are used to determine local PN formation rate. Together with the brightness of the nebula, its ionized mass is derived. The evolution of the ionized mass is discussed. As a by-product, the Zanstra temperature of the central stars of the optically thick nebulae is found. Interestingly this temperature indicates that the DA white dwarfs in the sample are considerably hotter than previously thought. Finally, with the help of the galactic bulge PN, a luminosity function for PN in the galaxy is derived.

The Kilo Degree Survey (KiDS) is a 1500 square degree optical imaging survey with the recently commissioned OmegaCAM wide-field imager on the VLT Survey Telescope (VST). A suite of data products will be delivered to the European Southern Observatory (ESO) and the community by the KiDS survey team. Spread over Europe, the KiDS team uses Astro-WISE to collaborate efficiently and pool hardware resources. In Astro-WISE the team shares, calibrates and archives all survey data. The data-centric architectural design realizes a dynamic 'live archive' in which new KiDS survey products of improved quality can be shared with the team and eventually the full astronomical community in a flexible and controllable manner., Comment: 20 pages, Accepted for publication in topical issue of Experimental Astronomy on Astro-WISE information system

We have constructed a model to calculate in a synthetic way the evolution of stars on the asymptotic giant branch (AGB). The evolution is started at the first thermal pulse (TP) and is terminated when the envelope mass has been lost due to mass loss or when the core mass reaches the Chandrasekhar mass.Our model is more realistic than previous synthetic evolution models in that more physics has been included. The variation of the luminosity during the interpulse period is taken into account as well as the fact that, initially, the first few pulses are not yet at full amplitude and that the luminosity is lower than given by the standard core-mass-luminosity relations. Most of the relations used are metallicity dependent to be able to make a realistic comparison with stars of different metallicity. The effects of first, second and third dredge-up are taken into account. The effect of hot bottom burning (HBB) is included in an approximate way. Mass loss on the AGB is included through a Reimers Law. We also included mass loss prior to the AGB.The free parameters in our calculations are the minimum core mass for dredge-up (M(c)min), the third dredge-up efficiency (lambda) and three mass loss scaling parameters (eta(RGB), eta(EAGB), eta(AGB).The model has been applied to the LMC using a recent determination of the age-metallicity and star formation rate (SFR) for the LMC. The observed carbon star luminosity function and the observed ratio of oxygen-rich to carbon-rich AGB stars in the LMC acted as constraints to the model.Several models are calculated to demonstrate the effects of the various parameters. A model with M(c)min = 0.58M., lambda = 0.75, eta(RGB) = 0-86, eta(AGB) = eta(EAGB) = 5, including HBB reproduces the observations quite well. It is possible that the amount of carbon formed after a TP is higher than the standard value of X12 = 0.22. As long as lambdaX12=0.165 the model fits the observations. It is difficult to discriminate between a higher X12 and a higher lambda. Third dredge-up needs to be more efficient and must start at lower core masses than commonly predicted to account for the observed carbon star LF. It is suggested that evolutionary calculations have been performed with mixing-length parameters which are too small.The adopted mass loss rate coefficients correspond to a pre-AGB mass loss of 0.20M. for a 1M. and 1.8M. for a 5M. star. The low mass stars lose this on the RGB, the high mass stars in the core helium burning phase when they reach high luminosities before the TP-AGB. The Reimers coefficient on the AGB (eta(AGB) = 5) corresponds to a mass loss rate of 1.0 10(-6) M. yr-1 at the first TP for an initially 1 M. star with LMC abundances.These high mass loss rates are necessary to fit the initial-final mass relation and the high luminosity tail of the carbon star LF. The lifetime of the massive stars with these high mass loss rates are in good agreement with the observed number of massive AGB stars and their progenitors, the Cepheid variables. We suggest that the core mass at the first TP for massive stars has previously been overestimated because their evolution was calculated neglecting pre-AGB mass loss.Observationally the distribution of C-13 enriched carbon stars in the LMC is bimodal. There is a small number (approximately 0.1%) of high-luminosity (M(bol) - 4.75) J-type stars. The difference in relative numbers as well as the gap in luminosity between the two distributions suggst a different evolutionary origin. The low-luminosity J-type stars may be related to the R-stars in the Galactic bulge which have luminosities between 0 less than or similar to M(bol) less than or similar to - 3 indicating an origin at luminosities below the AGB.The small number of high-luminosity J-type carbon stars can be explained by HBB. Given the uncertainty in the observed LF and our approximate treatment of HBB the agreement is good. We predict that about 1 % of M and S stars are enriched in C-13 (and N-14).We considered the effect of ''obscuration'', when stars lose so much mass that they become optically invisible. Based on V-band, I-band and IRAS data of Reid et al. (1990) and a radiative transfer model we find that at most 3% of all carbon stars brighter than M(bol) = - 6 could have been missed in optical surveys. Using our model we derive that the overall effect of obscuration of carbon stars is negligible (approximately 0.1%).The predicted average final mass (M(f) = 0.59M.) is in good agreement with the observed value (0.60 +/- 0.02M.). We predict for our LMC model that stars with initial masses larger than 1.2-1.4M. turn into carbon stars directly and that stars initially more massive than about 1.5M. pass through an intermediate S-star phase before becoming carbon stars. This is consistent with the observation of carbon stars and S-stars in LMC clusters.The predicted birth rate of AGB stars is found to be in agreement with the death rate of Cepheids and the clump stars. The birth rate of planetary nebulae (PN) is a factor of 2 lower than the death rate of AGB stars suggesting that low mass stars (M less than or similar 1.1 M.) may not become PN.

This paper describes the Sixth Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. With this data release, the imaging of the northern Galactic cap is now complete. The survey contains images and parameters of roughly 287 million objects over 9583 deg2 , including scans over a large range of Galactic latitudes and longitudes. The survey also includes 1.27 million spectra of stars, galaxies, quasars, and blank sky (for sky subtraction) selected over 7425 deg2 . This release includes much more stellar spectroscopy than was available in previous data releases and also includes detailed estimates of stellar temperatures, gravities, and metallicities. The results of improved photometric calibration are now available, with uncertainties of roughly 1% in g, r, i, and z, and 2% in u, substantially better than the uncertainties in previous data releases. The spectra in this data release have improved wavelength and flux calibration, especially in the extreme blue and extreme red, leading to the qualitatively better determination of stellar types and radial velocities. The spectrophotometric fluxes are now tied to point-spread function magnitudes of stars rather than fiber magnitudes. This gives more robust results in the presence of seeing variations, but also implies a change in the spectrophotometric scale, which is now brighter by roughly 0.35 mag. Systematic errors in the velocity dispersions of galaxies have been fixed, and the results of two independent codes for determining spectral classifications and redshifts are made available. Additional spectral outputs are made available, including calibrated spectra from individual 15 minute exposures and the sky spectrum subtracted from each exposure. We also quantify a recently recognized underestimation of the brightnesses of galaxies of large angular extent due to poor sky subtraction; the bias can exceed 0.2 mag for galaxies brighter than r ¼ 14 mag.

The O-15(alpha,gamma)Ne-19 reaction is one of two routes for breakout from the hot CNO cycles into the rp process in accreting neutron stars. Its astrophysical rate depends critically on the decay properties of excited states in Ne-19 lying just above the O-15+alpha threshold. We have measured the alpha-decay branching ratios for these states using the p(Ne-21,t)Ne-19 reaction at 43 MeV/nucleon. Combining our measurements with previous determinations of the radiative widths of these states, we conclude that no significant breakout from the hot CNO cycle into the rp process in novas is possible via O-15(alpha,gamma)Ne-19, assuming that current models accurately represent their temperature and density conditions.

The initial-final mass relation (IFMR) of white dwarfs (WDs) plays an important role in stellar evolution. To derive precise estimates of IFMRs and explore how they may vary among star clusters, we propose a Bayesian hierarchical model that pools photo- metric data from multiple star clusters. After performing a simulation study to show the benefits of the Bayesian hierarchical model, we apply this model to five star clus- ters: the Hyades, M67, NGC 188, NGC 2168, and NGC 2477, leading to reasonable and consistent estimates of IFMRs for these clusters. We illustrate how a cluster-specific analysis of NGC 188 using its own photometric data can produce an unreasonable IFMR since its WDs have a narrow range of zero-age main sequence (ZAMS) masses. However, the Bayesian hierarchical model corrects the cluster-specific analysis by bor- rowing strength from other clusters, thus generating more reliable estimates of IFMR parameters. The data analysis presents the benefits of Bayesian hierarchical modelling over conventional cluster-specific methods, which motivates us to elaborate the pow- erful statistical techniques in this article., 29 pages, 12 figures
