The article discusses the Calligraphy Northwest 31st International Calligraphy Conference, which was held at Reed College in Portland, Oregon, from June 24th through July 1, 2012. Several events were featured including studio courses, calligraphy exhibitions and a lecture from the artist Georgianna Greenwood.

Although plans to develop a laboratory information system should be considered with caution, in some clinical laboratories this alternative may be preferable to the purchase of a system. The advantages and drawbacks of a user-designed system are explored, and suggestions made for the selection of hardware and software.

Follow-up tests ordered on 258 consecutively examined inpatients with low hemoglobin values on admission were analyzed. The appropriateness of the follow-up tests was evaluated by chart review after preselection by an algorithm. When the cause of the anemia was known or was irrelevant in view of the patient's clinical status, the laboratory use was judged to be adequate. Seventy-one percent of patients studied had an adequate follow-up, though 11% had nonindicated tests performed, scored as laboratory overuse. Twenty-four percent had no follow-up, scored as laboratory underuse. Five percent did not have all indicated tests done and had nonindicated tests done, scored as a mixture of underuse and overuse. Potential remedies to correct misuse are discussed.(JAMA 238:2709-2714, 1977)

The article examines the work of calligrapher Bettye Lou Bennett in the light of a calligraphic practice that exploits the possibilities of expression and sees the course of writing as a continuum in which contesting forces of formalization and colloquialism play out their subtle exchange. Bennett's body of work is said to play with the expressive potentialities lingering between visual impact and semantic understanding. Some of her work signify that she understands the possibilities offered by letters as art.

A sustained complementary hue may be obtained with a rotating black–white disc and pulses of chromatic light. Effects of disc rotation speed and of the chromaticity and luminance of the color pulse are described. The disc. observed at 11 speeds from 10 through 110 cps had a black and white sector. At the sector boundary there was an aperture through which red, yellow, green, blue, or purple light (filters equated for luminous transmittance) was pulsed for 3% of each cycle, followed by the white half cycle. Eleven observers made Munsell matches (total: 4995) to these lights, which were presented at three luminances. Complementary matches occurred 48% of the time, matches similar to the hues of the projected lights—33%, neutral matches—19%. There were systematic hue shifts around two pairs of stable points in the hue circle, as functions of disc rotation speed. The predominance of complementary matches over similar-hue matches varied with color-pulse chromaticity and luminance, and with disc speed.

Induced-hue matching responses are shown to be subject to a learning or conditioning effect. Munsell matches were made to a series of mixtures of red and tungsten light, viewed as test patches in a surround of the same two lights. Systematic forcing of the matches, during practice trials, produced modifications of the matching responses on test trials. Forcing consisted of restricting the Munsell hue ranges from among which the matches were made, but forcing was not extreme; it represented an abstract version of the responses of previous subjects to a similar set of stimuli. Six forced-match and six control subjects made 2592 matches, 864 from the critical pre- and post-forcing trials. In the forced-match group a strong blue or purple-blue component was added to nearly all hues. In each group, Munsell-value responses reflected the relative luminances of the stimuli, but tended to decrease slightly as a function of practice. Munsell-chroma responses were bimodally distributed and showed little change from early to late trials. Because of the experimental design, the hue shifts in the forced-match group are regarded as learning phenomena.
