The following leafhoppers (Deltocephalinae: Bonaspeiini) of the Fynbos Biome of South Africa are treated: Colistra parvulus (Linnavuori, 1961) is redescribed and three new species of Colistra Davies are described, i.e., C. acapitatus sp. n., C. bucapitatus sp. n. and C. semialius sp. n.; four species of Proekoides Stiller, 1986 are reviewed with the addition of P. postspina sp. n.; Proekes cephaleus (Naudé, 1926) is redescribed with details of the female ovipositor, and three new species, i.e., P. hemiplatyphalis sp. n., P. tetracaphalis sp. n., P. diacaphalis sp. n.; a new genus, Xhoreus gen. n. is described with one new species, X. ulosentus sp. n. All species are of similar appearance, size and with reduced hind wings. Two species, C. acapitatus and C. bucapitatus, were collected on Rooibos tea. Keys are provided to species of Colistra, Proekes and Proekoides. Distribution models show limited ranges in the Western Cape province and confined to the Fynbos Biome while Xhoreus ulosentus is possibly endemic to the Cape Peninsula. The validity of the tribe Bonaspeiini is discussed.

badius (Platynopus) Walker 1867a: 125. [Fig. 15] Original data: “ a. Old Calabar. Right antenna, fourth and fifth left antennomeres, left anterior leg, and right posterior leg missing (Fig. 15). Current status: Platynopiellus septendecimmaculatus (Palisot de Beauvois, 1811) (synonymised to Platynopus rostratus Drury, 1782 by Distant 1900a: 63; see Schouteden 1905: 160; Schouteden 1907: 48; Due to homonymy (see “ Notes ” below), the name of the species became that of the next available junior synonym: Pentatoma 17- maculata Palisot de Beauvois, 1811 (see Kirkaldy 1909: 12, as Platynopus 17-maculatus); Thomas (1994: 195) placed it in his new genus, Platynopiellus.). Notes: The International Code of Zoological Nomenclature states: “A junior homonym [Art. 53] must be rejected and replaced either by an available and potentially valid synonym [Art. 23.3.5] or, for lack of such a name, by a new substitute name [Art. 60.3].” (ICZN 1999, Art. 60.1.) and later: “Junior homonyms with synonyms. If the rejected junior homonym has one or more available and potentially valid synonyms, the oldest of these becomes the valid name of the taxon [Art. 23.3.5] with its own authorship and date.” (ICZN 1999, Art. 60.2.). Distant (1900a: 63) had synonymised Platynopus badius Walker, 1867 to P. rostratus (Drury, 1782). The latter, however, was a junior primary homonym to Cimex rostratus DeGeer, 1773 (Pentatomidae) as well as a primary homonym to C. rostratus Goeze, 1778 (Coreidae) and C. rostratus Fabricius, 1781 (Pentatomidae) (Dolling et al. 1999: 77). The name rostratus Drury, 1782 needed thus to be rejected and replaced. The species Cimex rostratus Drury, 1782 had many synonyms. The oldest of these was Cimex calens Fabricius, 1803. This, however, was a primary homonym to Cimex calens Linnaeus, 1767 (Miridae) (Dolling et al. 1999: 18). The next synonym of Cimex rostratus was Pentatoma 17-maculata Palisot de Beauvois, 1811 and this was retained as the valid name of the species. The specific epithet, originally spelled 17-maculata, has been transliterated in two different ways: septendecimaculata /- us (Thomas 1994: 194–195; Maldès & Pluot-Sigwalt 2004) and septemdecimmaculatus (Dolling et al. 1999: 18, 77; Rider 2015); we have adopted the spelling septendecimmaculata /- us as we have chosen to follow Welter-Schultes (2012: 76); the set of rules provided there is convenient and useful to achieve consistency in transliterating older names or naming new species.We note, however, that the use of “septemdecim” is not erroneous (Gaffiot 1934: 1426), only less correct (Lewis & Short 1891: 1675). coeruleus (Hoploxys) Dallas 1851: 103. [Fig. 34] Original data: “ ♀ ”. “a. Congo. Presented by Sir John Richardson, M. D.” [syntype (s)] SYNTYPE ♀: blue-margined syntype disc; red-margined type disc; “ Congo / 43 56”; “1. HOPLOXYS CAERULEUS,”; “a”; “NHMUK 010592440”. Antennae and legs (except the left middle leg and a part of the left anterior leg) missing. The specimen is also missing its right wing, while its abdomen is partially disconnected from its thorax (Fig. 34). Current status: Hoploxys coeruleus Dallas, 1851. Notes: As Dallas (1851: 103) noted “Antennae with the two basal joints black (rest wanting [emphasis ours])”, it is likely that he had only one specimen. Walker (1867a: 141) listed only one specimen and we have found only one female specimen in the collection. Still, we cannot be sure Dallas just described the species from one specimen, we therefore consider it a syntype. This specimen was not examined by Thomas (1994: 181) who only mentioned having examined specimens from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (as Zaire), Gabon and Cameroon and not the type. David & Dickinson (2016: 15) remarked: “Names that in their original form used ligatures are incorrect original spellings (Art. 27) but when the ligature is resolved and two letters replace it the names become correct original spellings (Art. 32.2.2.).” and later, p. 20, “Article 58.1 (I.C.Z.N., 1999) states that species-group names that contain -ae- and -oe-, but are otherwise identical, are deemed to be homonyms when included in the same genus (Art. 58); indeed, classical Latin dictionaries list coerul- as a variant of caerul- (Gaffiot, 1934).” Dallas (1851: 79) had originally named the species “ HOPLOXYS COERULEUS ”; this was an incorrect original spelling. The correct original spelling should be “coeruleus”, as in our entry and current status. annulatus (Stiretrus) Distant 1889: 317. [Fig. 10] Original data: “ Hab. Current status: Stiretrus anchorago (Fabricius, 1775) (synonymised by Thomas 1992: 109–110). Note: Thomas (1992: 110) explained: “The type of Stiretrus annulatus Distant was located in the British Museum (Natural History). It is labeled: (a) “Type,” (b) “ Stiretrus annulatus,” (c) “Tepic, Mex. July, Schumann.” The specimen is a female and is metallic blue in color.” From Distant’s original description, we do not know whether Distant had one or more specimens, nor the sex. We have found only one specimen in the collection but cannot be sure it was the only one Distant had. conspersus (Platynopus) Walker 1867a: 123–124. [Figs. 41–42] Original data: “ a, b. Orizaba. From M. Sallé’s collection.” [two syntypes] LECTOTYPE ♁ (designated by Thomas 1992: 58): purple-margined lectotype disc; green-margined type disc; “3. PLATYNOPUS CONSPERSUS.”; “NHMUK 010592398”. Fifth left antennomere, fourth and fifth right antennomeres, right middle leg, and left posterior leg missing (Fig. 41). PARALECTOTYPE sex unknown: blue-margined paralectotype disc; “Mex / 56.143”; “ Oplomus conspersus Walker’s catal.”; “NHMUK 010592400”. Right antenna, third to fifth left antennomeres, middle and posterior legs, and the abdomen missing (preventing the sex determination) (Fig. 42). Current status: Oplomus mutabilis Stål, 1862 (Platynopus conspersus Walker, 1867 was synonymised to Oplomus (Stictocnemus) proteus Stål, 1862 by Stål 1870: 30 [see also Distant 1880: 32, 1900a: 63; Schouteden 1907: 36]; the latter species was synonymised to Oplomus mutabilis Stål, 1862 by Thomas 1992: 58). Notes: Walker (1867a: 124) had noted: “The spines of the thorax in this species are hardly apparent, and thus it resembles Oplomus.” Indeed, the species was later synonymised to species of Oplomus. Thomas (1992: 58) stated: “The type of Platynopus conspersus, a female, was located in the British Museum (Natural History). It is labeled: (a) “Type,” (b) “ Platynopus conspersus.”” Walker (1867a: 124) had described: “Abdomen blackish blue, except at the tip; under side with a large quadrate spot of whitish tomentum on each side of the hinder disk, which is wholly black”. The “whitish tomentum” mentioned by him is a bristle set which occurs only in males of some species of Asopinae (glandular patches). Therefore, we assume that Thomas made a mistake when copying the sex of this specimen from his notes. Current status: Stiretrus anchorago (Fabricius, 1775) (synonymised by Thomas 1992: 109–110). Notes: Thomas (1992: 110) explained: “The type of Stiretrus caerulaeus [sic!] Dallas was located in the British Museum (Natural History). It is labeled: (a) “Type,” (b) “Mex.” (c) “ Stiretrus caerulaeus.” The specimen is a female and is metallic blue in color.” From Dallas’s original description, we do not know whether he had one or more specimens, only the sex: female. Walker (1867a: 115) listed one specimen with the same provenance (“a. Mexico ”) and we have found only one female specimen in the collection but cannot be sure it was the only one Dallas had. By giving its labels data and calling the specimen “the type”, Thomas designated it as the lectotype by inference of “the type” (ICZN 1999: Art. 74.6). David & Dickinson (2016: 15) remarked: “Names that in their original form used ligatures are incorrect original spellings (Art. 27) but when the ligature is resolved and two letters replace it the names become correct original spellings (Art. 32.2.2.).” and later, p. 20, “Article 58.1 (I.C.Z.N., 1999) states that species-group names that contain -ae- and -oe-, but are otherwise identical, are deemed to be homonyms when included in the same genus (Art. 58); indeed, classical Latin dictionaries list coerul- as a variant of caerul- (Gaffiot, 1934).” Dallas (1851: 79) had originally named the species “ STIRETRUS caeruleus ”; this was an incorrect original spelling. The correct original spelling should be “caeruleus”, as in our entry. Notes: Dallas had at least two specimens, since he listed male and female; Walker (1867a: 145) listed four specimens from the same provenance (Hudson’s Bay, Dr. Barnston). We have found them all. When Thomas (1992: 129) noted: “The type of Zicrona cuprea, a female, was located in the British Museum (Natural History). It is labeled: (a) “Type,” (b) “ Zicrona cuprea.””, he thereby “unambiguously selected [this] particular syntype to act as the unique name-bearing type of the taxon” (ICZN 1999, Art. 74.5). Burks (1975: 140) precised that, although the labels read “Hudson Bay”, Barnston actually collected his specimens at St Martin’s Falls on the Albany River, in Ontario, Canada. This locality is mentioned in the NHMUK Accessions Register. At least one specimen of this species was sent to the Museum of Victoria by Francis Walker (Walker 1985: 15). Indeed, Public Library, Museums and National Gallery (Vic.), et al. (1890: 52) listed one specimen (Number 52876) coming from Hudson’s Bay. It could be a specimen from the type series, perhaps the male mentioned in the original description? Notes: From Thomas’s (1992: 95–96) catalogue entry for Podisus affinis Distant, it is clear that Thomas believed it to be a replacement name for the secondary homonym Arma fuscescens (Stål, 1862) (nec Dallas, 1851). This is only partly true. Stål (1862b: 90) described Telepta fuscescens from Mexican female specimens deposited both in the Stockholm Museum and in Signoret’s collection (currently in NHMW). Walker (1867a: 135) placed Telepta fuscescens Stål in Arma as a “ Nomen bis lectum ”, a homonym of Arma fuscescens Dallas, which appeared on the previous page. Stål (1870: 50–51) synonymised his own Telepta fuscescens with Dallas’s Arma fuscescens under the name Podisus (Podisus) fuscescens Dallas. However, Stål only mentioned the part of his type series in the Stockholm Museum, not that in Signoret’s collection. Subsequently, Distant (1880: 38) discovered that the latter was a different species and described this material (as well as specimens from Berlin and London museums), as Podisus affinis. Thus, Telepta fuscescens Stål was not only a secondary homonym in Arma of Arma fuscescens Dallas but also, it was partly synonymous with it. Whilst the material present in NHMW was not examined, the first author imaged two specimens of Podisus affinis Distant, 1880 in MFNB, a male and a female.
