The mustelid assemblage from Hunas is represented by seven species: Gulo gulo gulo (Linnaeus, 1758), Meles meles (Linnaeus, 1758), Lutra lutra groissii Heller, 1983, Martes martes (Linnaeus, 1758), Mustela putorius Linnaeus, 1758, Mustela erminea Linnaeus, 1758 and Mustela nivalis Linnaeus, 1766. Most species have been found in the G1-G3 complex, while their remains in other layers are rare. The guild is dominated by remains of Mustela nivalis, for which well-preserved and stratified material shows a large, robust weasel, with a notable predominance of males. Records from online biodiversity databases (including citizen science data) can play a crucial role in enhancing scientific knowledge about the abundance, distribution, and population trends of poorly studied species which are usually not properly monitored. This study aims to demonstrate the utility of data hosted in GBIF in detecting the likely decline of species common and widely distributed in the past, but whose conservation status is now uncertain, such as the weasel (Mustela nivalis) in Spain. To address this, we analyzed data on its presence in Spain from 2008 to 2022 available on GBIF.org, and compared it with the distribution data from the Atlas of Mammals of Spain published in 2007. The results indicate that: (i) data from GBIF.org reveal a moderate decline (negative trend) in the weasel population in Spain during the study period; (ii) the species has been recorded in a limited number of 10 × 10 km UTM-squares (Universal Transverse Mercator) within its distribution range as defined by the 2007 atlas; and (iii) there are large areas of Spain in which the species has not been detected in recent years. These findings highlight the concerning conservation status of this carnivorous species and underscore the value of data from open access platforms such as GBIF in identifying potential silent extinctions. The Colombian weasel, Neogale felipei, is a rare carnivoran known only from nine localities, eight in Colombia and one in Ecuador. Recent records have expanded our understanding of the distribution and threats that this mammal faces, but the species is still among the rarest Neotropical carnivores. Here, we present an update to the distribution of N. felipei based on a recent record obtained in the Cordillera Occidental (Western Cordillera) of Colombia, and information on internal and external morphology using noninvasive technique such as X-rays of museum preserved specimens. We also documented the presence of lice, Neotrichodectes minutus, which is the first documented ectoparasite of the species. With the new records, the species is currently known from 12 localities (11 in Colombia and one in Ecuador). We also present the first radiographic analyses for N. felipei and the obtained vertebral formula (49 total vertebrae) fits into the range reported for the species and other mustelids. Considering that the Colombian weasel is one of the rarest carnivores of the Neotropics, our work represents a noteworthy contribution to several aspects of the anatomy, distribution, and natural history of this rare carnivoran. Weasels (genus Mustela and Neogale) are of management concern as declining native species in some regions and invasive species in others. Regardless of the need to conserve or remove weasels, there is increasingly a need to use non‐invasive monitoring methods to assess population trends.We conducted a literature review and held the first ever International Weasel Monitoring Symposium to synthesise information on historical and current non‐invasive monitoring techniques for weasels. We also explored current limitations, opportunities, and areas of development to guide future research and long‐term monitoring.Our literature search revealed that in the past 20 years, camera traps were the most commonly used non‐invasive monitoring method (62% of studies), followed by track plates or scent stations designed to collect footprints (23%) and walking transects for tracks in snow or soil (8.7%).Experts agreed that the most promising non‐invasive monitoring techniques available include use of citizen scientist reporting, detection dogs, detecting tracks, non‐invasive genetic surveys, and enclosed or unenclosed camera trap systems. Because each technique has benefits and limitations, using a multi‐method approach is likely required.There is a need for strong commitment to dedicated monitoring that is replicated over space and time such that trend data can be ascertained to better inform future management action. Five photographs of Siberian Weasel were captured by camera traps in two locations at an elevation of 2,840-3,200 m. in Gaurishankar Conservation Area. The species was identified based on its uniform yellowish-brown coat, the presence of a black mask that surrounded its eyes and the white chin, which are key characteristics that distinguishes it from other weasel species. This is the first confirmation of the presence of Siberian Weasel in Gaurishankar Conservation Area, Nepal. Stoat (Mustela erminea) and weasel (M. nivalis) are hard to monitor as they are elusive of nature and leave few identifying marks in their surroundings. Stoat and weasel are both fully protected in Denmark and are thought to be widely distributed throughout the country. Despite this stoat and weasel were listed on the Danish Red List as Near Threatened in 2019, as their densities and population trends are unknown. Using a modified novel camera trapping device, the Double‐Mostela, a wooden box comprising a tracking tunnel and two camera traps, we attempted to obtain density estimates based on identification of individual stoats and weasels. We deployed camera traps both inside Double‐Mostela traps and externally in three different study areas in northern Zealand, Denmark, and tested commercial, American scent‐based lures to attract stoat and weasel. We obtained very low seasonal trapping rates of weasel in two study areas, but in one study area, we obtained a seasonal trapping rate of stoat larger compared to another study using the Mostela. In one study area, both species were absent. We observed no effect of scent‐based lures in attracting small mustelids compared to non‐bait traps. Potential reasons behind low capture rates of weasel and stoat are suboptimal habitat placement and timing of deployment of the Double‐Mostelas, land‐use changes over the last 200 years, predation from larger predators, as well as unintended secondary poisoning with rodenticides. Due to the scarcity of weasel and stoat captures, we were unable to make density estimates based on identification of individuals; however, we identified potential features that could be used for identification and density estimates with more captures. Information on the presence and abundance of a species is crucial for understanding key ecological processes but also for effective protection and population management. Collecting data on cryptic species, like small mustelids, is particularly challenging and often requires the use of non-invasive methods. Despite recent progress in the development of camera trap-based devices and statistical models to estimate the abundance of unmarked individuals, their application for studying this group of mammals is still very limited. We compared direct (live-trapping) and indirect (an enclosed camera-trapping approach—the Mostela system) survey methods to estimate the population size of weasels (Mustela nivalis) inhabiting open grasslands in Northeast Poland over a period of four years. We also live-trapped voles to determine prey availability. We used a Royle–Nichols model to estimate yearly (relative) abundance from the camera-trapping data in a Bayesian framework. The total number of live-captured weasels showed a similar change over time as the relative abundance of weasels estimated using camera-trap data. Moreover, estimates of weasel abundance increased with the availability of their main prey. Our study is part of a growing body of work showing that camera traps can provide a useful non-invasive method to estimate the relative abundance of small mustelids. Moreover, a combination of data from camera traps with statistical models allowed us to track the changes in weasel number over time. Small mustelids are an understudied group partly due to the challenges in detecting and monitoring their populations. Despite the classification as Least Concern for several small mustelid species, some studies indicate a population decline in parts of their range. Therefore, efficient and group-specific methods are essential to support monitoring efforts. Camera traps are widely used, particularly to monitor cryptic and nocturnal species such as most carnivores. However, they tend to miss small-sized and fast-moving species due to the sensitivity of the passive infrared sensor. The Mostela is a device which consists of a camera trap and a tracking tunnel inside a wooden box, designed specifically to detect small mustelids. Here, we propose testing the performance of this device and comparing it to a tree-mounted camera trap, using the least weasel (M. nivalis) as a case study. We used multi-scale occupancy models to estimate differences in the detection probability between devices. Although both methods detected the least weasel, the detection probability was higher with the Mostela (0.8, BCI: 0.52–0.97 vs 0.2, BCI: 0.03–0.48). Furthermore, we obtained a higher trapping rate when using a shorter distance between sampling stations (∼350 m). Although the Mostela performed better at detecting the weasel, the number of independent events was low (N = 11). Therefore, we present recommendations in terms of deployment and future research since the development and testing of new methods are essential for the conservation efforts of small mustelids. A time series is a sequence of sequentially ordered real values in time. Time series classification (TSC) is the task of assigning a time series to one of a set of predefined classes, usually based on a model learned from examples. Dictionary-based methods for TSC rely on counting the frequency of certain patterns in time series and are important components of the currently most accurate TSC ensembles. One of the early dictionary-based methods was WEASEL, which at its time achieved SotA results while also being very fast. However, it is outperformed both in terms of speed and accuracy by other methods. Furthermore, its design leads to an unpredictably large memory footprint, making it inapplicable for many applications. In this paper, we present WEASEL 2.0, a complete overhaul of WEASEL based on two recent advancements in TSC: Dilation and ensembling of randomized hyper-parameter settings. These two techniques allow WEASEL 2.0 to work with a fixed-size memory footprint while at the same time improving accuracy. Compared to 15 other SotA methods on the UCR benchmark set, WEASEL 2.0 is significantly more accurate than other dictionary methods and not significantly worse than the currently best methods. Actually, it achieves the highest median accuracy over all data sets, and it performs best in 5 out of 12 problem classes. The article titled "The monkey chased the weasel: is it irritable bowel syndrome or faecal incontinence we find following obstetric anal sphincter injuries?" explores the relationship between irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and fecal incontinence (FI) after repairing major obstetric anal sphincter injuries (OASIS). The study surveyed 82 women who had undergone OASIS repair, comparing them to two control groups. The authors found that patients who had undergone OASIS repair were less likely to have perfect continence compared to the control groups. Mesopredators play an important role in shaping communities, especially when apex predators are no longer present. To persist, mesopredators must confront competition by developing different coexistence strategies. In this study, we used detection and activity data derived from remote cameras to investigate the seasonal coexistence of mesopredators and their interactions with prey in a region of Southwest China where apex predators have been extirpated. We found that Siberian weasels (Mustela sibirica) occupied the entire study area, whereas masked palm civets (Paguma larvata) were restricted to <1,900 m in fall, and expanded their ranges up by about 600 m in spring to likely prey on small mammals. We detected weasels at almost all locations where civets were present, but detection rates and activity patterns for both species suggested avoidance of larger-bodied civets by weasels. We found that weasels were active at all hours and overlapped with all prey both spatially and temporally, whereas civets were nocturnal and crepuscular, which only overlapped with murid rodents. Although we did not directly observe intraguild or predator–prey interactions, evidence suggested that masked palm civets and Siberian weasels seem to coexist due to different seasonal dietary preferences, hunting strategies, and activity patterns. Environmental filtering is deemed to play a predominant role in regulating the abundance and distribution of animals during the urbanization process. However, the current knowledge about the effects of urbanization on the population densities of terrestrial mammals is limited. In this study, we compared two invasive mammals (dogs Canis lupus familiaris and cats Felis silvestris) and three indigenous mammals (Siberian weasels Mustela sibirica, Amur hedgehogs Erinaceus amurensis, and Tolai hares Lepus tolai) in response to urbanization using camera trap distance sampling (CTDS) in the rural–urban landscape of Tianjin, China. We used generalized additive mixed models (GAMMs) to test the specific responses of their densities to levels of urbanization. Invasive dogs (2.63 individuals/km2, 95% CI: 0.91–7.62) exhibited similar density estimations to cats (2.15 individuals/km2, 95% CI: 1.31–3.50). Amur hedgehogs were the most abundant species (6.73 individuals/km2, 95% CI: 3.15–14.38), followed by Tolai hares (2.22 individuals/km2, 95% CI: 0.87–5.68) and Siberian weasels (2.15 individuals/km2, 95% CI: 1.06–4.36). The densities of cats, Siberian weasels, and Amur hedgehogs increased with the level of urbanization. The population densities of dogs and cats were only influenced by urban‐related variables, while the densities of Siberian weasels and Amur hedgehogs were influenced by both urban‐related variables and nature‐related variables. Our findings highlight that the CTDS is a suitable and promising method for wildlife surveys in rural–urban landscapes, and urban wildlife management needs to consider the integrated repercussions of urban‐ and nature‐related factors, especially the critical impacts of green space habitats at finer scales. Towards the end of the nineteenth century, British colonists in Jamaica became increasingly exasperated by the damage caused to their sugar plantations by rats. In 1872, a British planter attempted to solve this problem by introducing the small Indian mongoose (Urva auropunctata). The animals, however, turned on Jamaica's insectivorous birds and reptiles, leading to an explosion in the tick population. This paper situates the mongoose catastrophe as a closing chapter in the history of the nineteenth-century acclimatization movement. While foreign observers saw the introduction of the mongoose as a cautionary tale, caricaturing British Jamaica as overrun by a plague of weasels and ticks, British colonists, administrators and naturalists – identifying a gradual decline of both populations – argued that the 'balance of nature' would eventually reassert itself. As this paper argues, through this dubious claim they were attempting to retrospectively rationalize or justify the introductions and their disastrous aftermath. This strategy enabled them to gloss over the lasting ecological damage caused by the mongoose, and allowed its adherents to continue their uncritical support of both the Jamaican plantation economy and animal introductions in the British Empire. Identifying factors that drive infection dynamics in reservoir host populations is essential in understanding human risk from wildlife-originated zoonoses. We studied zoonotic Puumala orthohantavirus (PUUV) in the host, the bank vole (Myodes glareolus), populations in relation to the host population, rodent and predator community and environment-related factors and whether these processes are translated into human infection incidence. We used 5-year rodent trapping and bank vole PUUV serology data collected from 30 sites located in 24 municipalities in Finland. We found that PUUV seroprevalence in the host was negatively associated with the abundance of red foxes, but this process did not translate into human disease incidence, which showed no association with PUUV seroprevalence. The abundance of weasels, the proportion of juvenile bank voles in the host populations and rodent species diversity were negatively associated with the abundance index of PUUV positive bank voles, which, in turn, showed a positive association with human disease incidence. Our results suggest certain predators, a high proportion of young bank vole individuals, and a diverse rodent community, may reduce PUUV risk for humans through their negative impacts on the abundance of infected bank voles. The phylogeography of the Altai weasel (Mustela altaica) based on mitochondrial control-region sequences was investigated using samples from individuals obtained widely across the species range, including Central Asia, Tibet and southern Siberia. Thirty-four haplotypes were identified among 53 individuals from 32 localities. A maximum-likelihood phylogenetic tree for haplotypes showed two major clades, clades I and II. Clade I contained haplotypes from northern Eurasia, including the continental Far East, Altai Mountains and eastern Kazakhstan. Clade II comprised two subclades: group IIa, with haplotypes from around the Pamir Mountains, and the poorly supported group IIb, with haplotypes from the Tibetan Plateau. High haplotype diversity and low nucleotide diversity for clade I suggest that the range of M. altaica expanded over a relatively short period in northern Eurasia. High haplotype and nucleotide diversity for clade II indicate a longer-term, more stable population resulting from geographical isolation of individuals on the Tibetan Plateau by surrounding mountain ranges. Our study suggests that the ancestral population of M. altaica migrated into Tibet from the outside and has diversified in Tibet, seemingly not supporting the 'out-of-Tibet' hypothesis; however, we could not completely refute this hypothesis because an individual having a group IIb haplotype was detected in Mongolia. Determining reference intervals (RI) is a valuable asset for assessing the health of wildlife species. This is the first study to establish serum biochemical RIs in Siberian weasels. Forty-two healthy free-ranging Siberian weasels were captured live and brought to Seoul Wildlife Center between June 2021 and August 2022. Blood samples from 42 healthy Siberian weasels of both sexes were used to calculate RIs. An automated analyser was used to perform serum biochemistry profiles. The American Society for Veterinary Clinical Pathology recommendations were used to calculate a nonparametric RI with 90% confidence intervals. The RIs of albumin, total protein, globulin, calcium, glucose, blood urea nitrogen, phosphorus, amylase, cholesterol, alanine aminotransferase, total bilirubin, alkaline phosphatase, creatinine, and creatine kinase were determined. A novel interaction between a long‐tailed weasel (Mustela frenata) and a plains spotted skunk (Spilogale interrupta) carcass is detailed. In November 2020, a farmer in Edmunds County in north‐central South Dakota sent in a video recording of a long‐tailed weasel with a spotted skunk carcass. Location of the event, carcass condition, and recorded behavior of the long‐tailed weasel offer probable, but unconfirmed, evidence that the spotted skunk was killed by the long‐tailed weasel. Background: The least weasel (Mustela nivalis) holds the distinction of being the world's smallest carnivorous animal, yet its presence in South Korea has remained poorly understood. To address this knowledge gap, this study investigates the habitat preferences and distribution of the least weasel in South Korea. Results: Our study compiled presence data from various sources, including citizen reports, national surveys, and expert observations. The results confirmed the nationwide presence of the least weasel in mainland South Korea, with notable concentration regions such as Gangwon province. Among the various habitats, forest edges and forests emerged as the predominant choice, with over half of the documented locations situated within these environments, particularly in broadleaf forests. Additionally, the data reveal a year-round presence of the least weasel, with recorded cases occurring at varying levels throughout the year. Conclusions: Our research advances the understanding of least weasels in South Korea. Despite the relatively modest dataset, our results provide as a valuable resource for future conservation initiatives, emphasizing the significance of forested landscapes. Additionally, it assists in identifying priority areas for protection and management efforts. Weasels are small mustelid carnivores that play an important role as predators of small mammals in a wide array of ecosystems. However, their response to land use, such as forest harvest for timber products, is seldom the subject of focused research and management projects. Both the American ermine, also known as the short-tailed weasel (Mustela richardsonii), and the long-tailed weasel (Neogale frenata) are native to Maine, United States, where commercial timber harvesting is widespread. The effects of this forest disturbance on weasels are poorly understood, so to contribute toward filling this knowledge gap, we conducted a 4-year, large-scale field study: specifically, our objective was to assess the effects of forest disturbance caused by timber harvest on occupancy patterns of ermines and long-tailed weasels occupancy patterns in Maine. We collected data from 197 survey sites (three camera traps each) over 4 years and analyzed over 7,000 images of weasels using dynamic false-positive occupancy models. We found that American ermines were widely distributed across the state (naïve occupancy at 54% of sites), while long-tailed weasels were rarer (naïve occupancy at 16% of sites). Both species responded positively to forest disturbance, with higher occupancy probabilities as disturbance increased, especially at the larger scales. American ermines were more likely to occupy stands with a higher percentage of conifer trees, while no such relationship was found for long-tailed weasels. The sex and age differences of the Siberian weasel by morphological characteristics were considered; the value of sexual dimorphism was estimated by the main dimensional characteristics. A high haplotypic diversity and a reduced level of nucleotide diversity of the Siberian weasel in Yakutia were revealed. The similarity of Siberian weasels from Yakutia and western Siberia in the complex of morpho-genetic features and their differences from the Far Eastern subspecies, including the variability of the fragment of the cytochrome b mtDNA gene, were established. The Colombian weasel, Neogale felipei, previously included in the genus Mustela, is considered the rarest carnivore in the Neotropics and is known from only eight localities in Colombia and Ecuador. It is currently classified as Vulnerable, but little is known about the direct threats that the species faces. We present a new locality record for N. felipei in the Andes of southwestern Colombia based on a road-killed specimen. The record is relevant because it provides additional information about morphological variation and describe a new threat to its populations that even affects individuals within protected areas such as the Puracé National Park, where the specimen was found. The Saharan striped polecat (Ictonyx libycus) is endemic to Africa, inhabiting the edges of the Saharan Desert. Little is known about the biology or genetic status of this member of the weasel family (Mustelidae). We present the first complete mitochondrial genome of the Saharan striped polecat, assembled from data generated using a genome skimming approach. The assembled mitogenome is 16,549 bps in length and consists of 37 genes including 13 protein-coding genes, 2 rRNAs, 22 tRNAs, an origin of replication, and a control region. Climate has long been recognized as one of the main determinants of the geographical distribution of species. Variations associated with primary productivity in temperature, rainfall, and photoperiod can affect survival and reproduction, affecting the peripheries of geographical distributions. The importance of graphical visualization of these distributions lies in conservation, management, and environmental research. With respect to the South American species of mustelids, 37% are threatened according to the IUCN Red List, and the limits of distributions and their determinants are poorly known for the majority of species. Here, complete and updated databases and maps of geographical and temporal distribution are presented for the 12 species of mustelids inhabiting South America. Museum specimens and recorded localities were gathered based on an online search. Geographic limits of distributions were assessed, as were environmental values for all localities. Comparison with IUCN maps was undertaken to determine the need for updating. Finally, sympatry and syntopy among species analyzed were examined using Geographic Information Systems. The most complete and updated database of geographic distributions of South American mustelids to date was assembled for all species, encompassing 9,826 localities. New areas with recorded localities not present in IUCN maps were documented in many species, indicating the need to update current maps for conservation efforts. Areas of sympatry and syntopy were found among many species, indicating that patterns of coexistence between them are not well known. This study will serve as a framework for ensuing efforts in species distribution modeling, conservation decisions, and field studies, among others. Las variaciones de temperatura, precipitaciones, y fotoperíodo asociados a la productividad primaria pueden afectar la supervivencia y reproducción, marcando los límites de las distribuciones geográficas de las especies. Las visualizaciones gráficas de las distribuciones son vitales para la conservación, manejo y estudios ambientales. De la fauna de mustélidos sudamericana, el 37% se encuentra en una de las categorías de amenaza de la Lista Roja de la Unión Internacional para la Conservación de la Naturaleza (UICN), mientras que los límites de distribución y sus determinantes son desconocidos para la mayoría de estas especies amenazadas. En este estudio, se presentan bases de datos y mapas actualizados de la distribución geográfica y temporal de las 12 especies de mustélidos presentes en Sudamérica. Se utilizaron localidades provenientes de especímenes de museos junto a una extensa búsqueda de registros de mustélidos online. Se evaluaron los límites geográficos de distribución y los valores de las variables ambientales para todas las localidades. Se realizaron comparaciones con los mapas de la UICN para analizar si una actualización del mapa de distribución sería necesaria. Por último, se evaluó la presencia de simpatría y sintopía de las especies analizadas utilizando Sistemas de Información Geográfica. Se colectó un total de 9.826 localidades para todas las especies de mustélidos, representando así la base de datos más actualizada de la distribución geográfica de este grupo en América del Sur. Se identificaron áreas con registros de mustélidos, que están ausentes en los mapas de la UICN, indicando la necesidad de actualización de los mapas relacionados a los esfuerzos de conservación. The history of the introduction of stoats (Mustela erminea) and weasels (M. nivalis) to New Zealand is a paradigm example of how the course of history can turn on a sequence of simple, unconnected events. When Victorian pastoralists were faced with the dilemma that rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) were thriving better than their sheep, they sought to enlist the rabbits' natural enemies to save them from crippling economic losses. An improbable series of circumstances linked four principal characters whose dramatic anti-rabbit policies seemed reasonable to them but have had catastrophic consequences. A Lincolnshire farmer, Samuel Grant, visiting New Zealand in 1880, met Francis Rich, a pastoralist suffering rabbit damage; Rich and Grant organised a trial shipment of stoats and weasels escorted by Lincolnshire trapper Walter Allbones in 1883. Supervising Rabbit Inspector Benjamin Bayly authorised thousands more over 1884–1889, until imports stopped in 1892. This paper describes why only the four principal players could have made each necessary link in the chain, and how easily it could have been broken. Legal attempts to stop the importations failed in 1876, but within another 25 years, the 'natural enemies' policy was recognised as a tragic mistake, and its proponents were widely discredited. The palaeontological site of Montoussé (Montoussé, Hautes-Pyrénées, France) was discovered by Édouard Harlé in 1892. Montoussé Breccia 5 is dated from the Early Pleistocene (1.2-1.5 Ma). It has yielded a large number of small to medium-sized species, including a homogeneous series and important sample of small mustelids. We provide here a morphological and metrical analysis of these 52 mustelid specimens in order to provide identification keys that differentiate the weasel Mustela nivalis Linnaeus, 1766, the stoat Mustela erminea Linnaeus, 1758, and their fossil relatives Mustela praenivalis Kormos, 1934 and Mustela palerminea Pétenyi, 1864. The specific identifications are discussed in chrono-climatic context. These small carnivores are particularly sensitive to climatic variations and a correlation is established between their size and the environment. A better knowledge of inter- and intra-specific variability of these species could lead to making them valid paleoenvironmental markers. This research, it was made in order to examine the horse archery, which has a versatile and important effect in the life of the Turks. In the research was used document analysis method, one of the qualitative data analysis methods. The ancient Turks would start teaching their children archery from a young age, and children would train for horseback archery by riding on the back of sheep and shooting arrows at squirrels, weasels and various birds. The ancient Turks are known to have utilized horses for various purposes by domesticating them, such as nourishment, migrating to different places and using their arrows on the move. They practiced horseback archery in preparation for and for war purposes besides the organized sportive horseback archery activities during celebrations, banquets and festivities. The ancient Turks, the Seljuks and the Ottomans all used the bow and arrow as elements of success, for ruling, giving orders and extending invitations. From the 14th and 15th centuries, archery and horseback archery were performed by Turks for hunting, entertainment and athletic purposes. Although convergence is often recognized as a ubiquitous feature across the Tree of Life, whether the underlying traits also exhibit similar evolutionary pathways towards convergent forms puzzles biologists. In carnivoran mammals, "elongate," "slender," and "long" are often used to describe and even to categorize mustelids (martens, polecats, and weasels), herpestids (mongooses), viverrids (civets and genets), and other carnivorans together. But just how similar these carnivorans are and whether there is convergence in the morphological component that contribute to elongation has never been assessed. Here, I found that these qualitatively described elongate carnivorans exhibited incomplete convergence towards elongate bodies compared to other terrestrial carnivorans. In contrast, the morphological components underlying body shape variation do not exhibit convergence despite evidence that these components are more elongate in elongate carnivorans compared to nonelongate carnivorans. Furthermore, these components also exhibited shorter but different phylogenetic half-lives towards more elongate adaptive peaks, indicating that different selective pressures can create multiple pathways to elongation. Simple Summary: The family of coronaviruses comprises a diverse set of strains and variants which cause diseases from the common cold to COVID-19. Moreover, they infect a wide array of hosts from bats, camels, birds, to humans. Studying coronaviruses through the lens of host specificity provides a unique perspective to understanding the evolution, diversity and dynamics of this family. In particular, this can reveal groups of different hosts infected by similar strains, giving clues on strains which were more likely to have evolved to jump from one host to another. In this work, we frame host specificity as a classification task, in designing a very compact numerical representation of the spike sequences of different coronaviruses. Based on this numerical representation, classification methods are able to detect the target host with high accuracy. Such an approach can used to efficiently scale to large volumes of sequences, in order to unveil trends in the host specificity of different coronavirus strains. The study of host specificity has important connections to the question about the origin of SARS-CoV-2 in humans which led to the COVID-19 pandemic—an important open question. There are speculations that bats are a possible origin. Likewise, there are many closely related (corona)viruses, such as SARS, which was found to be transmitted through civets. The study of the different hosts which can be potential carriers and transmitters of deadly viruses to humans is crucial to understanding, mitigating, and preventing current and future pandemics. In coronaviruses, the surface (S) protein, or spike protein, is important in determining host specificity, since it is the point of contact between the virus and the host cell membrane. In this paper, we classify the hosts of over five thousand coronaviruses from their spike protein sequences, segregating them into clusters of distinct hosts among birds, bats, camels, swine, humans, and weasels, to name a few. We propose a feature embedding based on the well-known position weight matrix (PWM), which we call PWM2Vec, and we use it to generate feature vectors from the spike protein sequences of these coronaviruses. While our embedding is inspired by the success of PWMs in biological applications, such as determining protein function and identifying transcription factor binding sites, we are the first (to the best of our knowledge) to use PWMs from viral sequences to generate fixed-length feature vector representations, and use them in the context of host classification. The results on real world data show that when using PWM2Vec, machine learning classifiers are able to perform comparably to the baseline models in terms of predictive performance and runtime—in some cases, the performance is better. We also measure the importance of different amino acids using information gain to show the amino acids which are important for predicting the host of a given coronavirus. The present research employs the method of mytholinguistics to inquire into certain names for the weasel in the Balkan region in the context of the mytho-religious beliefs and rites related to them. The mytholinguistic analyses demonstrate the existence of a common Balkan archetype model in the nomination of the weasel in Bulgarian and in some other Balkan languages. This model emerges in the names characterized by the internal form ‘young married woman’ as well as in some other names of similar internal form related to the wedding rituals. An ancient model has been explored that explicates the symbolic status of the small predator related to female, pristine (girl-like), and wedding symbolism, which is presumably the result of substrate influence of pre-Slavic or even pre-Indo-European mythological beliefs and rites. The motivation behind these names is connected with the popular ancient ritualistic practice “funeral at a wedding”, relics of which have been preserved in the Balkans. Another archetype model emerges in the Balkan context with certain names for the weasel in Bulgarian and Romanian; this, however, is of Slavic origin. The Altai weasel, Mustela altaica Pallas 1811 (Carnivora: Mustelidae), is widely distributed across open landscapes of central and eastern Asia. The geographical variation in skull morphology and taxonomic composition of this small mustelid remain poorly known. Based on extensive sampling in museum collections, we analyzed morphometric variation in 23 cranial characters of 232 M. altaica specimens from across its entire range. The multivariate analysis (nonmetric multidimensional scaling) revealed a geographical pattern of variation in cranial size and shape. Based on this result, two morphological groups have been comprehensively characterized. Weasels of the first group differ from those of the second in having larger skulls, wider neurocrania, elongated toothrows, and larger carnassial teeth, as well as in sexual size dimorphism. The first group is confined to the southwestern part of the species range (Tien Shan Mountains, Pamir, the Himalayas, and southern Tibet). The second group is widespread from the foothills of Tien Shan in the west to Khingan and Manchuria in the east. The distribution of the two groups of M. altaica is consistent with the "Out-of-Tibet" hypothesis. The first group presumably can be attributed to M. a. temon Hodgson, 1857 , whereas the second group can be treated as nominotypical M. a. altaica Pallas, 1811. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this field note, we detail video evidence of Spilogale putorius (Eastern Spotted Skunk) further excavating a den site that was subsequently visited by Mustela frenata (Long-tailed Weasel). In October 2019 in Burke County, NC, we tracked a radio-collared Eastern Spotted Skunk to a small ground burrow. A camera trap was set outside the den entrance for 7 days. During this period, we observed that the burrow was occupied by 1 or more individual spotted skunks, and concurrently occupied by 2 spotted skunks on at least 1 occasion. The burrow was further excavated by 1 of the spotted skunks, representing the first recorded footage of this behavior in the Eastern Spotted Skunk. On 1 occasion, between visits to the den by the spotted skunks, a Long-tailed Weasel investigated the burrow. Small carnivores are of increasing conservation concern globally, including those formerly thought to be widespread and abundant. Three weasel species (Mustela nivalis, M. frenata, and M. erminea) are distributed across most of North America, yet several recent studies have reported difficulty detecting weasels within their historical range and several states have revised the status of weasels to that of species of conservation concern. To investigate the status and trends of weasels across the United States (US) and Canada, we analyzed four separate datasets: historical harvests, museum collections, citizen scientist observations (iNaturalist), and a recent US-wide trail camera survey. We observed 87–94% declines in weasel harvest across North America over the past 60 years. Declining trapper numbers and shifts in trapping practices likely partially explain the decline in harvest. Nonetheless, after accounting for trapper effort and pelt price, we still detected a significant decline in weasel harvest for 15 of 22 evaluated states and provinces. Comparisons of recent and historical museum and observational records suggest relatively consistent distributions for M. erminea, but a current range gap of >1000 km between two distinct populations of M. nivalis. We observed a dramatic drop-off in M. frenata records since 2000 in portions of its central, Great Lakes, and southern distribution, despite extensive sampling effort. In 2019, systematic trail camera surveys at 1509 sites in 50 US states detected weasels at 14 sites, all of which were above 40o latitude. While none of these datasets are individually conclusive, they collectively support the hypothesis that weasel populations have declined in North America and highlight the need for improved methods for detecting and monitoring weasels. By identifying population declines for small carnivores that were formerly abundant across North America, our findings echo recent calls to expand investigations into the conservation need of small carnivores globally. Long-tailed weasels (Mustela frenata) have an extensive North American geographic range and tolerate a wide range of life zones, excluding some desert ecosystems. However, little is known of their habitat use in landscapes fragmented by agriculture, despite the fact that long-tailed weasel populations may be declining in these landscapes. During late winter-spring and late summer-autumn 1998–2000, we monitored 11 long-tailed weasels (seven males, four females) via radio telemetry to examine patterns of habitat use in an Indiana landscape fragmented by agriculture. Long-tailed weasels exhibited scale-dependent patterns of habitat selection (i.e., habitat selection within a landscape and selection of habitats within home ranges). Weasels selected forest patches, fencerows, and drainage ditches, whereas agricultural fields were avoided. Forest patches and fencerows provided suitable den sites and refuge cover from other predators and exhibited an abundant and diverse prey community. Drainage ditches provided movement corridors and access to free-standing, drinking water. The resource selection patterns and limited dispersal ability of long-tailed weasels compared to other carnivores are consistent with the notion that long-tailed weasels appear sensitive to agriculturally induced fragmentation of habitat.
