The few-layer hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) nanosheets with hydroxyl (−OH) functional group at edges are synthesized using heat treatment of micron size hBN powder followed by sonication. These nanosheets are modified with a silane coupling agent, 3-Aminopropyl,triethoxysilane (APTES). The synthesized hBN nanosheets are mixed with the PP matrix using twin-screw extrusion followed by injection moulding. In case of APTES-modified hBN nanosheets incorporation in the PP matrix with PP-grafted maleic anhydride (PP-g-MA) shows the formation of an imide bond between the MA functional group of PP-g-MA and the amine group of APTES modified hBN nanosheets revealing compatibilization. The flow behaviour index values are lower for hBN nanosheets filled PP nanocomposites showing the improved processability from Rheological characterization. The few-layered – OH and APTES modified hBN nanosheet incorporation in the PP matrix improves the tensile and thermal properties. The incorporation of APTES modified hBN nanosheet in the PP matrix shows an increase in tensile modulus (18.1%) and tensile strength (8.1%) respectively. Wear studies show the incorporation of – OH and APTES modified hBN nanosheets in the PP matrix decreases the coefficient of friction and wear rate significantly. The wear rate at 4 min of wear testing for modified hBN nanosheet in the PP nanocomposites is ~ 96% less in comparison with neat PP. Tire wear is a fracture process that has a decisive impact on tire life and on the environment. When a tire rolls, a heating process occurs due to friction caused by the viscoelastic rubber sliding over uneven road. This process occurs globally in the contact patch area and locally around the asperity tips, heating the tread and transferring heat to the surrounding material. On roads with a good quality pavement, the stress, and therefore the heat, is evenly distributed throughout the rubber material of the tire, which has a direct effect on fatigue wear. In contrast, unevenly distributed stress, and therefore heat, is generated in the tread when the tire rolls and slides over sharp asperities in rough terrain. This leads to very pronounced, unstable fracture processes that cause unevenly distributed wear, known as cut and chip (CC). The extent of heat generation or temperature evolution and its effect on CC wear have not yet been investigated and described in scientific publications. Therefore, this study firstly presents the detailed characterization of the influence of temperature development on the CC wear of a styrene–butadiene rubber, which commonly is used in treads of consumer tires. Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) has been widely used as a material in dentistry. The deterioration of pure PMMA denture teeth is a significant issue that can alter the vertical dimensions of dentures. This study investigates the effect of aluminum oxide (Al2O3) nano-ceramic addition as reinforcements into the heat-cure acrylic resin denture teeth. The PMMA was reinforced with Al2O3 concentrations of 1, 3, 5, and 10 wt.%. The PMMA without ceramic addition is produced for comparison purposes. The color change, densification, microhardness, and compressive properties of the produced PMMA resin and its composites were investigated to detect the effect of Al2O3 nano ceramic addition on the physical and mechanical properties. Furthermore, the microstructure was also performed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis. A chewing simulator was utilized to conduct two-body wear testing, employing a human enamel antagonist. The wear behavior of the PMMA and their composites were assessed by measuring the weight loss after submitting them to 37,500 cycles. The SEM microstructure analysis revealed sound specimens of PMMA reinforced with 0, 1, 3, and 5 wt.% Al2O3 without any porosity and micro defects using the applied production procedures. In contrast, the aggregated sites and propagation of cracks were detected for the PMMA/10 wt.% Al2O3 specimen. The densification and hardness properties of the produced PMMA composites improved with increasing the Al2O3 additions. The microhardness of PMMA/10 wt.% Al2O3 improved by around 233% compared to the PMMA matrix. The higher compressive properties were detected for the PMMA/5 wt.% Al2O3 composite specimen with ultimate compressive strength (UCS) of 54.75 MPa and yield strength (YS) of 45.6 MPa and improved than the PMMA matrix by around 98 % and 117 %, respectively. In addition, incorporating Al2O3 nano-ceramic particles into a PMMA matrix revealed a significant improvement in the wear resistance of the produced composites compared to the PMMA matrix. The present work examines the tribological characteristics of cast aluminium–silicon matrix composites reinforced with silicon carbide (SiC) and graphite (Gr). The metal matrix composite samples were manufactured using stir and squeeze casting techniques, employing an Al–Si matrix alloy and integrating particulate SiC and varying quantities of graphite particles. To investigate the impact of varying amounts of graphite on the Al/SiC composite, graphite particles were included at volumetric proportions of 5, 7.5 and 10%. Before being integrated into the matrix, Cu-coating was employed on graphite particles using electroless coating to enhance the adhesion with the matrix composition. Tribological experiments were conducted on Al/SiC and the Al/SiC/Gr composites using a pin-on-disc tribometer apparatus. Al–SiC and Al/SiC/Gr samples were specifically engineered and employed as a pin, while AISI 8620 steel was utilized as a disc. Adding graphite particles to the Al/SiC composite decreased the amount of wear and friction. The utilization of hybrid Al/SiC/Gr composites resulted in the creation of tribo-layers during sliding, hence minimizing the occurrence of grooves, plowing and smearing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The investigation describes the processing and analysis of laser welded Hastelloy-X (HX) alloy joints through this paper. HX alloys are employed in aerospace and nuclear industries, especially for high-temperature applications. In this research, a series of laser beam welding (LBW) experiments denoted as E1 to E9 were conducted on the HX base metal (BM), adhering to the L9-orthogonal array (L9-OA) design matrix. CO2 laser technology was employed to fabricate HX butt joints. The laser power, focal length and welding speed were the variables. Then, the character of each joint was analyzed by sophisticated testing methods as per ASTM standards. The results showed that the character of each sample was varied depending on the selection of parameters. The E5 sample had a maximum tensile strength (TS) and ductility with 93 % joint efficiency. The grain elongation and refinement in the weld zone (WZ) were confirmed through microstructures and electron back scattered diffraction (EBSD) studies. The corrosion character of each joint (E1 to E9) was analyzed using the potentiostatic polarization method. The E1 sample had the highest corrosion resistance. The corrosion rate was in the range of 7.4E−03 to 8.6E−05 mm/yr. The dry sliding wear test (A1 to A9) was carried out as per L9-OA on the E1 sample, since this weld parameter had good corrosion resistance, by varying applied load, sliding distances and sliding velocities. Wear test results showed an increase in wear rate with the increase in load and sliding distance. A wear map was also drawn using the results to find out the association between wear rates and wear parameters. Weld speed had influenced the strength of the joint and laser power had shown an impact on the corrosion and wear of the HX alloy joints. The weld zone, corroded sample and the worn-out surfaces of weld joints were further analyzed using an optical microscope (OM) and Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM). Graphene nanoplatelet (GNP)–reinforced TiB2 + SiC composites were fabricated by reactive spark plasma sintering (SPS) from a TiC–B4C–SiC powder mixture with equal‐volume percentages, optimizing their SPS temperature and evaluating their unlubricated sliding wear against diamond. First, it is shown that during the heating ramp of the SPS cycle, TiC and B4C react according to the chemical reaction 2TiC + B4C → 2TiB2 + 3C, and that the thus‐formed C is graphenized as GNPs, leading to composites with microstructures consisting of a ceramic matrix of fine TiB2 and SiC grains with abundant randomly oriented GNPs at grain boundaries. It is also shown that this reactive SPS is optimal at 2000°C (under 75 MPa pressure and 5 min soaking), resulting in a very hard (∼28.5–29.9 GPa) and very tough (∼6.7(3) MPa m1/2) composite. And second, it is shown that these two properties and its proneness to develop an oxide tribolayer make this composite very resistant to unlubricated sliding wear against diamond (∼2.8(1)·108 (N m)/mm3), undergoing only very mild two‐body abrasion. In mechanical equipment friction pairs, there are instances of varying friction radius (e.g., brake pads in trains), but the impact of variation in friction radius on friction-induced vibration noise (FIVN) has not yet been clearly understood and has drawn little attention. To address this, a series of tests under different friction radii were carried out using a CETR friction and wear tester, and a finite element model(FEM) based on the main structure of the tester was established to carry out complex modal and transient dynamic simulations. Furthermore, a two-degree-of-freedom (2-DOF) numerical model was proposed to analyze the stability and dynamic characteristics of the ball-disc friction system. Based on the FIVN simulation tests, finite element simulations, and numerical analysis results, the impact of variations in the friction radius on FIVN was discussed. The results indicate that the friction radius is a crucial factor impacting the intensity and evolution of FIVN. Under the experimental parameters employed in this study, the intensity of FIVN increases with the enlargement of the friction radius. Correspondingly, an increase in friction radius significantly increases the friction disc's wear. The scratches' width, depth, and wear volume increase. In the friction process, the increase in friction radius leads to an increase in the wear amount of the friction disk, which also results in a significant accumulation of wear debris actively engaging in the frictional process at the interface. Therefore, the degradation of the friction surface becomes increasingly severe and exhibits complex tribological behaviors. The increase in friction radius facilitates modal coupling phenomena in friction systems, inducing high-intensity unstable vibrations within this system. Furthermore, with a larger friction radius, the structure of the friction system is more prone to deform. As the friction ball moves more significantly along with the friction disk, the concentration of contact stress at the interface intensifies notably in the region adjacent to the cutting-in end, accompanied by an increase in the numerical value of the contact stress. In scenarios with a large friction radius, the concentration of contact stress on surfaces is the primary reason for the greater width, depth, and wear volume of the scratches on the friction disc. The 2-DOF numerical model of the ball-disc friction system we established effectively helped us discuss the impact of the friction radius and coefficient of friction (COF) on system stability. It is found that under a large friction radius and COF, the system exhibits modal coupling phenomena, with a state of vibrational instability. The intensity of friction-induced vibration (FIV) also increases with the friction radius. In conclusion, this study finds that the friction radius is a key factor affecting FIVN, and appropriate measures should be taken to improve the tribological behavior of the interface to suppress FIVN when encountered a large friction radius. Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is renowned for its remarkably low friction coefficient (µ ~ 0.1) yet exhibits notably high wear rates (K ~ 104) in dry sliding applications. To mitigate this, various metallic and non-metallic fillers have been explored, consistently demonstrating a reduction in wear rates of unfilled PTFE between 10 and 104 times. Among these fillers, α-Al2O3 is one of the most extensively studied materials. 5 wt% of α-Al2O3 filler into PTFE yields a composite material, PTFE- α-Al2O3, characterized by a wear rate a staggering 104 times lower than unfilled PTFE. This reduction in wear has been attributed to the formation of tribofilms on the PTFE composite and metal counterbody material. These tribofilms emerge due to the interaction between broken fluropolymer chains and environmental water and oxygen. This interaction results in the creation of carboxylate salt groups, which subsequently react with metal/metal oxide particles (both from the counterbody and the metal filler) to form tribofilms. Despite numerous studies scrutinizing the chemical composition of the tribofilms pre- and post-test, the chemical development of these films has remained largely unexplored. In this study, the authors utilize attenuated total reflection infrared spectroscopy (ATR-IR), transmission infrared (IR) spectroscopy, optical microscopy, and stylus profilometry to observe tribofilm development. A thorough topographical and chemical description of the tribofilm is provided via these techniques. The ratio of carboxylate salt groups directly corresponds with improved wear performance and these changes are very local to the worn polymer surface. A sealed reciprocating tribometer has been used to study the influence of different gaseous environments on the friction and wear properties of AISI52100 bearing steel at atmospheric pressure and 25 °C. Helium, argon, hydrogen, carbon dioxide and nitrogen all give high friction and wear, suggestive of very little, if any tribofilm formation under the conditions studied. Dry air and oxygen also give high friction, slightly lower than the inert gases, but produce extremely high wear, much higher than the inert gases. This is characteristic of the phenomenon of "oxidational wear". The two gases ammonia and carbon monoxide give relatively low friction and wear, and XPS analysis indicates that this is due to the formation of adsorbed ammonia/nitride and carbonate films respectively. For the hydrocarbon gases studied, two factors appear to control friction and wear, degree of unsaturation and molecular weight. For the saturated hydrocarbons, methane and ethane give high friction and wear but propane and butane give low friction after a period of rubbing that decreases with molecular weight. The unsaturated hydrocarbons all give an immediate reduction in friction with correspondingly low wear. Raman analysis shows that all the hydrocarbons that reduce friction and wear form a carbonaceous tribofilm on the rubbed surfaces. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The friction and wear characteristics of a-C:H:Si and a-C:H coatings in an ethanol environment at 120 °C and 10 MPa focusing on the effects of water and dissolved oxygen in ethanol were investigated. The friction tests were conducted using an autoclave chamber, with gases (oxygen or nitrogen) and ethanol–water mixtures (0 and 6 vol.%). The wear acceleration of a-C:H:Si took place when it slid in ethanol with 6 vol.% water and pressurized by oxygen, thus the specific wear rate was the highest, approximately 1.8 × 10−7 mm3/Nm. The reason of this wear acceleration was assumed the effect of hardness reduction due to oxidation of the a-C:H:Si, so the O/C ratio by AES and the hardness of topmost surface by AFM nano-scratch were investigated. As a result, the higher O/C ratio showed higher specific wear rate due to the hardness reduction from 13.3 to 6.0 GPa. This paper is dedicated to the numerical solution of a mathematical model that describes frictional quasistatic contact between an elastic body and a moving foundation, with the wear effect on the contact interface of the moving foundation due to friction. The mathematical problem is a system consisting of a time-dependent quasi-variational inequality and an integral equation. The numerical method is based on the use of the virtual element method (VEM) for the spatial discretization of the variational inequality and a variable step-size left rectangle integration formula for the integral equation. The existence and uniqueness of a numerical solution are shown, and optimal order error estimates are derived for both the displacement and the wear function for the lowest order VEM. With the decreasing age threshold for patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty (THA), there is an escalating demand for enhanced polyethylene durability. Although reports assessing wear in remelted highly cross-linked polyethylene (HXLPE) through radiographic imaging exist, a consensus regarding its oxidation level is lacking. This study investigated the wear, oxidation levels, and degradation of remelted HXLPE that was retrieved at least 10 years after THA. Our analysis focused on 7 cases of melted HXLPE liners retrieved ≥10 years after THA. All patients were women, who had an average age of 64 ± 6.5 years at the initial operation, and the mean postoperative period after THA was 12 years and 11 months ±1 year and 5 months. The wear conditions were measured by matching the shape analysis data obtained from a coordinate-measuring machine with a spherical model. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy was used to study the oxidation of polyethylene, and the polyethylene structure was evaluated using scanning electron microscopy. Osteolysis was not observed in any case on X-rays, computed tomography, or intraoperative findings during revision surgery. The average oxidation index (OI) of the sliding surface under load was 0.31 ± 0.22 in the 6 cases calculated after hexane treatment, and 0.69 for one case without hexane treatment. In the 6 cases calculated after hexane treatment, the average OI of the non–load-bearing sliding surface was 0.11 ± 0.20. Average wear values were 0.33 ± 0.11 mm at 45 degrees from the equatorial direction and 0.04 ± 0.07 mm in the opposite direction. The initial structure of the polyethylene was preserved at all sites with low oxidation levels; however, in one case with stem subsidence, morphological changes and a high OI were observed. Despite the significant oxidation resistance of NiCrAlY alloy, one of the disadvantages of this alloy is its softness and poor mechanical properties, and low wear resistance. Therefore, in this study, silicon nitride nanoparticles have been used to improve the hardness and wear resistance of the NiCrAlY alloy. The present research has examined the effect of different amounts of Si3N4 nanoparticles (1, 3, and 5 wt.%) on the structure and mechanical properties of NiCrAlY alloy. The samples were characterised by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Vickers microhardness device. Initially, Si3N4 powders with 1, 3, and 5 wt% were mixed with NiCrAlY powder in a mechanical mill. Next, the powdered mixtures underwent spark plasma sintering (SPS) operations at 1100 °C for 6 min. The results of microhardness measurements showed that adding 1% Si3N4 to NiCrAlY caused the elevation of the hardness from 418 to 614 HV. Further, the sample indicated a wear rate of 1.42 × 10−5 (m3/N.m) at room temperature, under a loading force of 9.8 N, and a sliding length of 500 m. However, with an increase in the weight percentage of Si3N4 in the sample from 1 to 5 wt%, the hardness diminished from 614 to 543 HV. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aluminum alloy being a significant material for many industries, and due to its favourable properties like low density and the high strength-to-weight ratio, is used for cladding. But because of low wear resistance, non-uniform grain structure, and other certain insufficiencies, Friction stir processing (FSP) was applied over the cladded part to overcome these deficits and drawbacks and improve the mechanical characteristics of the produced component further. In this work, mechanical and microstructural characteristics were investigated and analysed by varying rotational speed and number of passes at the time FSP. After FSP finer grains were found, and other solidification defects were eliminated from the final components. Processed part shows the increment in tensile strength, the hardness of the component increases while erosive wear decreases with the number of passes. Maximum hardness and minimum erosion wear rate for all three passes were attained at 598 RPM. Tensile strength and percentage elongation have been found to be highest at three passes at 938 RPM. Microstructure also reflects the finer grains at the highest RPM at the third pass. Also, modern quality management tools and process improvement technique like ANOVA was utilised to formulate the mathematical model and to study the relationship between the input and output of the process. This research paper focuses on the development of additive-based erosion-resistant high-velocity oxy-fuel (HVOF) WC-10Co4Cr coating for pump steel. In this study, the WC-10Co4Cr cermet powder consists of yttria and zirconia, each with a concentration of 3 wt.%. The HVOF spraying method was utilised to develop the ceramics-added WC-10Co4Cr coatings. The study conducted erosion tests using a pot tester under mining conditions. The microstructure, crystalline phases and microhardness of the as-HVOF coatings were analysed and compared between the pure and ceramics-based WC-10Co4Cr coatings. The results revealed the effect of ceramics addition on surface erosion of WC-10Co4Cr coating. The results indicate that yttrium oxide enhances the performance of WC-10Co4Cr coating in terms of erosion resistance, while zirconium oxide is not suitable for use in WC-10Co4Cr coating in erosion wear environments. The Aluminium Metal Matrix Composites are preferred in automotive and aerospace industries for higher strength to weight ratio, good corrosion resistance, and also for better tribological properties. Aluminium improves its qualities by adding reinforcements like fly ash, silicon carbide, tungsten carbide, boron carbide, and ceramic fired bricks. Stir casting is the most common and cost-effective method for processing and creating metal matrix composites, and it is dependent on the processing parameters, reinforcement, and matrix choices. In this investigation stir casting method was used to prepare composites by using Al7475 alloy with preheated reinforced particles of CSA and Graphite. The successful distribution of reinforcements in the Al7475 matrix was confirmed by SEM images of AMMCs and the improved wear and corrosion resistance of AMMC was revealed by the corresponding test results. At 3% Gr and 30N load, the wear rate reduction is 38.4% at 600 rpm, 50.6% at 800 rpm, and 69.4% at 1000 rpm. In the present work, the reduced graphene oxide (RGO) nanoparticles have been synthesised by modified Hummer's technique. The RGO powder thus obtained was characterised by X-Ray diffraction analysis (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electront microscopy (TEM). Raman spectra showed the D-band at Raman shift of 1354 cm−1 and G-band at 1606 cm−1 of RGO. TEM analysis exhibited the RGO structure in nanometres. The prepared nanoparticles were mixed with alcohol to form a paste and was coated on standard Copper electrode for experimentation on Electric Discharge Machine (EDM). The influence of process parameters like current, pulse on and pulse-off on the material removal rate were studied using L9 Orthogonal Array of Taguchi Technique using Minitab18.0. Substantial improvement in material removal rate at current of 20 amperes, pulse on time of 90 microseconds and pulse off time of 1 microsecond. This study investigates the synergistic effects of incorporating heat-treated rice husk Si3N4 bioceramic and corn husk fibers in high-content cellulosic corn husk fiber-polyester composites (E0 to E4). Mechanical, flammability, and fatigue properties are comprehensively analyzed. Tensile strength and modulus exhibit significant improvements, showcasing Si3N4's positive impact. Flexural properties demonstrate synergies between Si3N4 and corn husk fibers. SEM analysis validates reinforcing mechanisms, emphasizing improved matrix adhesion and toughened matrices. Impact strength, hardness, wear resistance, and flame resistance all show positive trends, highlighting Si3N4's pivotal role in enhancing these properties. Tensile creep analysis indicates Si3N4's influence in minimizing deformation over time. Fatigue performance reflects the synergistic effects of corn husk fibers and Si3N4. Overall, these composites demonstrate enhanced mechanical strength, durability, and flame resistance, suggesting their potential for diverse applications requiring superior material properties. This study aims to investigate the effect of adding novel cassava periderm biosilica (CPB) on the mechanical, V-notch rail shear, wear, and flammability behavior of Amaranthus viridis fiber-reinforced epoxy resin composite. The novel biosilica was synthesized from the waste cassava periderm via thermo-chemical process and was surface treated using an aminosilane. The fiber was extracted from the stems of Amaranthus viridis spinach via retting and mechanical shaving. Further the composites are developed using the hand layup procedure and characterized according to ASTM standards. The study revealed that the addition of fiber and biosilica of 3.0 vol. % improved the mechanical and V-notch rail shear strength. The silane-treated biosilica and fiber show highly adhered phase with resin. The coefficient of friction decreased up to 0.34 along with a lowest specific wear rate of 0.008 mm3/Nm upon the addition of 5.0 vol. % biosilica. Moreover the 5 vol. % of biosilica improved the flame resistance by providing a lower propagation speed of 8.45 mm/min with no falling drops and cotton lighten, claiming V-0 rating. This mechanically strengthened good abrasion and flame-resistant epoxy composite could be used in domestic infrastructure applications such as light weight man-hole cover, gratings, hand rail, septic tanks, and door and window panels due to their lightweight and eco-friendliness. In the area of plant engineering, steel components are provided with a wear protection coating for efficient use to protect them against corrosive, tribological, thermal and mechanical stresses. The use of innovative ultrasound-assisted milling processes and plasma-welded nickel- and cobalt-based wear protection coatings are being investigated to determine how more favourable machinability can be achieved while retaining the same wear protection potential. The focus is on the NiCrSiFeB alloy, which is intended to replace CoCr alloys in the area of screw machines. The utilization of ultrasonic-assisted milling for the machining of coating materials is a novel approach. The modification of hard facing layers in terms of microstructure and precipitation morphology as well as suitability for machining is investigated and compared with the CoCr alloy. The alloy modifications are generated by a PTA process by systematically adjusting the preheating and interpass temperatures, a crack-free wear-resistant layer can be generated, which is subsequently machined by a milling process. In addition to the crack-free properties, the microstructure, the bonding as well as the mixing between the NiCrSiFeB alloy and a 1.8550 as well as between the CoCr alloy and a 1.4828 are analysed and compared in the joining areas. In addition, heating and cooling rates are determined and a chemical analysis of the weld metals is performed. Furthermore, it was found that the build-up layers of NiCrSiFeB alloy are more difficult to machine using the milling process than the CoCr alloy, as higher milling forces are required. The study of tribological performance of metal-on-plastic type of hip prostheses has drawn the attention of researchers since the last few decades. These studies mainly focus on the friction and wear behaviour of acetabular cups made of different polymer biomaterials with a view to enhance the prostheses life. In this study, a novel biomaterial coded as LHHA has been prepared for the acetabular cup in three different blends with help of bioprocess engineering by mixing low-density polyethylene and high-density polyethylene with10, 20 and 30 percent of hydroxyapatite to improve the mechanical properties. A popular decision-making method was applied to select the best alternative from these three blends on the basis of hardness, roughness and ultimate strength and LHHA-30 is found to be the best. Furthermore, experimental wear investigation was carried out in a well-designed hip simulator to control such biological system under a series of random loads, within 600N and 1500N acting at different points on prosthesis for 10 million gait cycles run followed by theoretical wear analysis. Wear rates are found to be 12.651 and 26.247 mg per million cycle with marginal differences of 0.1 and 0.6 for LHHA-30 and ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) acetabular cups against cobalt–chromium (Co–Cr) alloy femoral head, respectively. Polyoxymethylene is used as an engineering material in many fields such as aircraft, aviation, and automotive industries in today due to its thermal resistance and mechanical properties. In this study, it is aimed to investigate the effects on the mechanical and structural properties of polyoxymethylene copolymer (POM-C) materials, which are used in many different industrial applications, by applying cryogenic treatment. For this purpose, deep cryogenic treatment was applied to the prepared samples at −175°C for 6, 12, 18, and 24 h, and then tensile, abrasion, impact, and hardness tests were applied to the samples that were kept at room temperature. In order to understand the changes in micro and crystal structures, XRD (X-Ray Diffraction), SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope), and FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared Radiation) analyzes were performed, and based on these analyzes, the differences in the structure of the POM-C material were compared. This study shows that the progressive adhesion of weld material to the tool in friction stir welding AA 2024-T3, up to tool saturation, brings about a decrease in power consumption until a plateau is reached. The cause of this behavior is the hindering of the stirring action of the tool due to the material accumulated on it. The built-up material changes the nature of the tool/material interaction and then the friction condition at their interface. The direct consequence is a decrease in the shearing strain and therefore in the heat generated by friction. Bits of this adhering material break off from the tool at intervals. Macro and micro detachments are identified. Micro-detachments happen continuously at small periodic intervals and produce vibrations. The amplitude of these vibrations increases in all their characteristic spectral components up to tool saturation. Wear due to thermal and mechanical stresses is one of the major causes of forging die failure. The assessment of die condition and the associated die life is usually based on experience. This paper presents a method to objectively predict the remaining life of a forging die. With this method a prediction based on optical measurements can be calculated. Practical tests show the possible applications. In addition, force measurements are performed and analyzed to determine how wear affects the force distribution in the die. The assessment based on optical measurements allows objective statements about the remaining tool life of forging dies. The synovial fluid is responsible for adequately lubricating, moisturizing, and nutritional human joints. This liquid should have appropriate viscoelastic properties and ensure a low coefficient of friction in biotribological systems. Many artificial synovial fluid preparations used in viscosupplementation treatments are based on hyaluronic acid. This work aimed to evaluate the influence of molecular weight on the functional properties of solutions based on hyaluronic acid. 1% solutions based on hyaluronic acid with five different molecular weights from 50,000 Da to 2 MDa were made. Rheological (viscosity, viscoelasticity), tribological (coefficient of friction, wear assessment), and wettability tests were carried out. Significant differences were observed in the rheological tests, where the viscosity strictly depends on the molecular weight of the hyaluronic acid. It has been shown that the molecular weight of HA has little effect on the coefficient of friction. On the other hand, the differences in the tribological wear are much more significant. The molecular weight of biopolymers is one of the essential parameters in developing new artificial synovial fluids. Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) has been widely used as a material in dentistry. The deterioration of pure PMMA denture teeth is a significant issue that can alter the vertical dimensions of dentures. This study investigates the effect of aluminum oxide (Al2O3) nano-ceramic addition as reinforcements into the heat-cure acrylic resin denture teeth. The PMMA was reinforced with Al2O3 concentrations of 1, 3, 5, and 10 wt.%. The PMMA without ceramic addition is produced for comparison purposes. The color change, densification, microhardness, and compressive properties of the produced PMMA resin and its composites were investigated to detect the effect of Al2O3 nano ceramic addition on the physical and mechanical properties. Furthermore, the microstructure was also performed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis. A chewing simulator was utilized to conduct two-body wear testing, employing a human enamel antagonist. The wear behavior of the PMMA and their composites were assessed by measuring the weight loss after submitting them to 37,500 cycles. The SEM microstructure analysis revealed sound specimens of PMMA reinforced with 0, 1, 3, and 5 wt.% Al2O3 without any porosity and micro defects using the applied production procedures. In contrast, the aggregated sites and propagation of cracks were detected for the PMMA/10 wt.% Al2O3 specimen. The densification and hardness properties of the produced PMMA composites improved with increasing the Al2O3 additions. The microhardness of PMMA/10 wt.% Al2O3 improved by around 233% compared to the PMMA matrix. The higher compressive properties were detected for the PMMA/5 wt.% Al2O3 composite specimen with ultimate compressive strength (UCS) of 54.75 MPa and yield strength (YS) of 45.6 MPa and improved than the PMMA matrix by around 98 % and 117 %, respectively. In addition, incorporating Al2O3 nano-ceramic particles into a PMMA matrix revealed a significant improvement in the wear resistance of the produced composites compared to the PMMA matrix. The periodic-cell model was proposed to simulate the successive contacts between the labyrinth fin and multiple honeycomb cells. With the experimental data, the finite-element-analysis (FEA) method with the periodic-cell model was validated. The effects of incursion parameters (i.e. incursion depth, incursion rate and sliding velocity) on the contact force, frictional temperature, material loss, and worn geometry of the honeycomb seal during the incursion process were studied. With the predicted worn geometry, the sealing performance degradation in the honeycomb seal was analyzed. The results showed that the proposed periodic-cell model has an excellent accuracy in predicting the wear behavior of honeycomb seal in rubbing events. The contact force between the honeycomb liner and labyrinth fin is pronounced especially at low sliding velocity and high incursion rate conditions, which increases the possibility of wear damage in the rotor part. At low sliding velocity and low incursion rate conditions, the frictional heat transferring to rotor part is increased, which increases the thermal stress near the contact region of the rotor part. As the clearance gap of honeycomb seal increases from 0.6 mm to 0.9 mm in the rubbing event, the leakage rate is increased by about 12%, and the carry-over effects downstream of the worn cells are increased. Aluminum alloys have advanced to meet the growing demand for strong, lightweight materials. The 2219 aluminum alloy has gained popularity due to its superior mechanical properties and high copper content. However, despite these improvements, the wear characteristics of metal matrix composites with ceramic reinforcements have been suboptimal. This study aims to develop metal matrix composites that improve the mechanical and wear properties of AA2219 aluminum alloy. A homogeneous mixture was created using a 3D mechanical mixer/miller apparatus. ZrO2 and B4C reinforcements were added to the matrix in ratios of 5%, 10%, and 15%, including hybrid composites with both reinforcements. Mechanical and wear characteristics were analyzed, and a 3D profilometer was used to evaluate wear properties and determine tribological parameters. The results showed that the pulverized reinforcement particles were uniformly dispersed within the matrix. The sample with a hybrid reinforcement comprising 15% of the total composition exhibited the highest hardness, measuring 164.96 hV. This study demonstrates that incorporating ceramic reinforcements in specific ratios can significantly enhance the mechanical and wear properties of 2219 aluminum alloy composites. Background: Primary tooth wear is a common phenomenon that affects chewing ability, dental sensitivity, aesthetics, and occlusion. This study was conducted to compare the antagonistic enamel wear of primary molars opposed to four different crown materials. Methods: Forty lower second primary molars of children aged 4–8 years were allocated into 4 groups: Group 1 (n = 10): received stainless steel crowns; Group 2 (n = 10): received prefabricated commercially available zirconia crowns (NuSmile®); Group 3 (n = 10): received locally manufactured zirconia crowns created via the CAD/CAM system; and Group 4 (n = 10): received locally manufactured hybrid ceramic (Vita Enamic®) crowns created via the CAD/CAM system. All the crowns were cemented with resin-modified glass ionomer cement. The upper arch was scanned with a 3D intraoral scanner immediately (baseline), 6 months, and 1 year after crown cementation to evaluate the wear of the natural enamel of the antagonistic primary molar. The resultant scans were compared via Exocad software to measure the amount of linear wear of the mesiopalatal cusp of the primary upper second molar. Results: The analysed data revealed statistically significant differences between the studied groups. The highest mean wear was detected in the CAD/CAM zirconia crown group, followed by the NuSmile zirconia crown group and then the CAD/CAM hybrid crown group, and the lowest mean wear was detected for the stainless-steel crown group. Conclusion: Compared with stainless steel crowns, aesthetic crowns cause more wear in the antagonistic primary molar enamel. CAD/CAM zirconia crowns induce the greatest amount of wear, followed by NuSmile zirconia crowns. The CAD/CAM hybrid crown is an aesthetic tooth-coloured crown that causes less wear of the opposing enamel than zirconia crowns do. High strength and low weight materials are highly demanded in today’s automotive, aerospace, marine, medical, military, and agricultural equipment applications. Using composite materials is the best approach to increase high-strength and low-weight materials. This study focuses on evaluating the density, micro hardness, tensile, and wear behaviors of C355 aluminum alloy hybrid nanocomposites added in nanosized Graphene Oxide (GO) and Bio Silica (BS). These reinforcements are sourced from waste materials such as Thunder Coconut Shell (TCS) and Napier Grass (NG). The three different C355 aluminum alloy composites that have been improved by graphene oxide and bio-silica nanoparticles have been made utilizing the very traditional stir casting process. The percentage of GO and BS nanosized reinforcements is varied from 3wt.%, and 6wt.%. The cast composites density, hardness, and tensile strength are assessed. Unidirectional friction and wear tests are performed for each composition under six different loading conditions, ranging up to 60N, while maintaining a sliding speed of 5m/s. The worn surfaces and composite components underwent additional scrutiny through SEM analysis. By adding 6wt.% more GO/BS nanoreinforcement to the C355 Al alloy nanocomposite, the study’s findings show that the nanocomposite has almost 52.42% more tensile strength and 27.26% higher hardness than the basic alloy. TiAlSiN is a potential protection coating for die steel to improve the surface hardness, anti-wear performance and suitability. In the present study, TiAlSiN is deposited on H13 die steel by high power impulse magnetron sputtering and the effects of bias voltage, deposition temperature, and film thickness on the performance of coatings are studied. The microstructure, mechanical and tribological properties of coatings are analyzed by energy dispersive spectrometer, X-ray diffraction, nanoindentation, friction and wear tests. The results show that with the changes of sputtering parameters, the content of Ti, Al, Si, and N fluctuates slightly. With the increase of bias voltage, deposition temperature and film thickness, the diffraction peaks of Ti3Al2N2 phase become wider. Higher bias voltage, deposition temperature, and film thickness are beneficial for obtaining coatings with high hardness, and strong wear resistance. By observing the surface morphology of coatings after grinding with Si3N4 balls, it was found that the wear mechanism of coatings contains abrasive wear, fatigue wear, and oxidative wear. The authors have previously developed the electrical impedance method which simultaneously measure the thickness and breakdown ratio of oil films in EHD (elastohydrodynamic) contacts. Furthermore, using a ball-on-disc-type apparatus, the authors have also confirmed that the accuracy of oil film measurement by the developed method is comparable to that of optical interferometry (i.e., glass-steel contacts). In this study, we discussed the experimental results obtained by applying the electrical impedance method to steel-steel contacts using a steel disc instead of a glass disc. It was found that under the mixed lubrication regime where wear occurs, the oil film thickness obtained by this method is calculated to be significantly thicker than the theoretical value. Drilling for implant site preparation generates heat, which can cause bone necrosis if temperatures exceed 47 °C for over a minute. Factors influencing heat include drill size, speed, pressure, irrigation, and tool wear. Frequent drill replacement is essential, as wear from repeated use and sterilization affects performance. This study compared three pilot drills with similar designs from different manufacturers, testing each on pig ribs for 15 perforations after 15 sterilization cycles. Researchers measured temperature increase, drilling time, and surface wear. Results showed that drill no. 1 generated more heat than drills no. 2 and no. 3, though none reached critical temperatures. Drill no. 2 took the longest to reach the desired depth and displayed the most deformation. Findings highlight the importance of adhering to the recommended operational limits, suggesting that drills should be replaced after 15 cycles to ensure efficacy and patient safety. This article deals with a mutual comparison of indexable cutting inserts of the CNMG 120408 type from two different manufacturers during the machining of hardened steel AISI 4337 and austenitic stainless steel AISI 316 L. The main goal is to analyse the different wear processes depending on the difference in the manufacturer's design and also depending on the properties of the different machined materials. The progress of the wear of the main spine of the tool, the types of wear and the service life of the cutting edge were monitored, with the achievement of the critical value VBmax = 300 µm being the standard. In addition to the wear of the inserts, the production of chips was monitored in terms of their shape, average size and number of chips per 100 g of chips produced. In order to understand the relationships arising from the obtained data, an SEM equipped with an elemental analyser was used to analyse the coating layers and the substrate of the unworn inserts and the types of wear and the intensity of the surface damage of the worn inserts. A several-fold difference in the lifetime of the cutting edge was found, both in terms of design and in terms of the selected machined material, while in both cases the cutting edge with Al2O3 and TiCN layers of half thickness achieved a better result in liveness. From the point of view of chip formation, very similar results in shape and average length were observed despite the different designs of chip breakers. Cutting inserts with half the thickness of the coating layers achieved longer cutting edge life in the non-primary material application compared to the target workpiece material. The article presents the classification of the wear mechanisms of forging tools. The durability of dies can be enhanced through a variety of methods, including the selection of appropriate hot working tool steel, the application of effective heat treatment, the utilization of advanced surface engineering techniques, and the incorporation of lubricating and cooling agents. Two popular methods of tool regeneration, such as re-profiling and laser regeneration, are presented. The issue of numerical wear prediction based on the Archard model, the correlation of this model with experimental results, low-cycle fatigue (HTLCF), and an alternative method based on artificial neural networks are discussed. Highlights Determining the appropriate formulation in designing and developing brake friction materials is one of the most complex tasks. This study investigates the synergistic effect and optimization of twaron fiber on the fade and recovery performance of brake friction composites. For this purpose, a series of friction materials containing varying amounts of twaron between 1 and 9 wt% were developed, and their characterization and tribo evaluation were carried out. The tribo performance of the composites was evaluated in a Krauss‐type friction test machine in line with the ECE R90 procedure in terms of their fade and recovery behaviors. It was noted that the fade‐recovery friction response of composites was affected when fiber is added; that is, an increase in fiber content improved the fade performance, friction fluctuations decreased, and a higher recovery response was observed. The fade and average coefficient of friction were found to be the main determinants, while recovery was found to be the stabilizer. Analytical hierarchy process (AHP) was used to determine the priority of importance of criteria in the performance evaluation, and VIKOR (multi‐criteria optimization compromise solution) was used for ranking evaluation. The formulation with a concentration of twaron 7 wt% was found to have exhibited an optimal braking performance. The worn surfaces scanning electron microscope (SEM) study confirms the general friction and wear mechanisms of friction layers with fiber content. The wear rates of tooth enamel were evaluated using a profile projector and a digital pachymeter as a measure of vertical height loss. The widespread availability of banana peels makes them an excellent resource for bio-fillers in developing environmentally conscious and biodegradable composites, serving as substitutes for plastic and synthetic waste. This study focuses on using banana peel waste as a bio-filler to produce lighter and cheaper materials. The extracted banana peels were subjected to alkali treatment to improve interfacial interaction, and their crystalline performance, functional categories, and morphological studies were examined using XRD, FTIR, and SEM techniques. Composite samples were fabricated with varying bio-filler ratios (0.0, 2.5, 5.0, 7.5, and 10%) to examine their thermo-mechanical and tribological attributes. The inclusion of banana peel in the epoxy matrix at up to 5% significantly enhanced mechanical performance, while 7.5% composites demonstrated higher thermal endurance with a degradation temperature of 395 °C and reduced water retention. Frictional wear of the specimens was assessed by varying sliding speeds under different loads, with the highest coefficient of friction and temperature observed under a 30 N force for BPC-10.0 specimens. This research innovatively uses banana peel powder (approx. 65 µm) to create polymeric composites, addressing the need for sustainable materials with higher specific modulus and strength compared to conventional substances. This study focuses on the creation of high degree biocomposite with the utilization of renewable resources, including cardanol oil, palm kernel fiber and chitosan biopolymer. The principal aim of this research was to achieve high degree ratio of biocomposite for safe and eco-friendly application. The chitosan biopolymer was extracted from marine waste sea urchin spikes via deproteination. The biocomposites were prepared via hand layup technique following testing via ASTM standards. According to results, among the composites fabricated, PC5 exhibits exceptional mechanical strength with tensile strength of 88.2 MPa, flexural strength of 133.35 MPa and impact energy of 3.92 J. Therefore, PC6 composite performs better wear resistance with reduced coefficient of friction of 0.399 and Sp. wear rate of 0.01 mm3/Nm, respectively. And also, PC6 provides good thermal resistance with initial decomposition temperature of 345 °C. Similar to mechanical properties, in fatigue behavior also PC5 exhibits high fatigue life cycle counts with 19,647 for 25% UTS, 18,799 for 50% UTS and 17,571 for 75% UTS. The obtained results show that the inclusion of palm kernel fiber and chitosan significantly enhances the mechanical properties, wear and thermal resistance of the composites, while the cardinal oil binder ensures proper adhesion. However, thermal aging conditions were implemented to assess the material's ability to withstand harsh environmental factors. Notably, among the composite materials tested, the designations with chitin (such as PC4, PC5, and PC6) exhibited lesser susceptibility to the effects of thermal aging. This resilience is attributed to the presence of NH2 functional groups within chitin, which play a role in reducing the impact of thermal aging. These discoveries highlight the promising qualities of the developed polyester biocomposites, suggesting their suitability for a wide array of industrial applications requiring materials capable of enduring high-temperature environments such as automotive door panels, structural, space, defense and sports applications. The positive effect of plasma electrolytic treatment on CrWMn tool steel to increase the wear resistance of its surface is shown. The effect of plasma electrolytic nitriding and subsequent polishing on the structure, phase and elemental composition, microhardness of the surface layer, and surface morphology is established. Steel nitriding leads to the formation of a modified surface layer including Fe2–3N iron nitride and nitrogen martensite, below which hardening martensite is formed, reaching a microhardness value of 1200 HV. Subsequent polishing leads to a decrease in surface roughness by 42–68%. Tribological tests were carried out according to the shaft-bushing scheme. A decrease in the friction coefficient and weight wear of up to 2.6 and 30.1 times, respectively, is shown. The formed structure of the surface layer compensates for the effect of the counter body and determines the destruction of friction bonds by plastic displacement. ABSTRACT The study investigated the potential of waste plastic oil (PO) as an alternative to petroleum‐based lubricants, specifically mineral oil. The rheological properties, dispersion stability, friction, and wear performance of PO were examined and compared with mineral oil. Results showed that PO demonstrated similar lubrication performance to mineral oil. To enhance the lubrication performance of PO, the study incorporated various concentrations of nano CuO solid lubricant additives, resulting in the formation of CuO nano lubricants. These lubricants showed an improvement in friction and wear by 20% and 44% compared with PO. Furthermore, the CuO solid lubricant additives were functionalized and incorporated in the same concentrations into PO, resulting in the formation of functionalized nano lubricants, which further lowered the friction and wear by 28% and 91% compared with PO. The novelty of the paper is that a simple chemical functionalization process that not only helped in improving its dispersion stability of additives in the PO, but also enhanced the wear performance. The mechanisms behind the enhancement of friction and wear performance were discussed. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that incorporating functionalized nano additives in PO improve friction and wear performance in mechanical components, promoting wider utilisation of PO. Acetabular cup liners made of ultra‐high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE), in hip implants fail mostly due to wear debris generation and poor wear resistance. Consequently, strengthening UHMWPE becomes essential. The current work exhibits how the addition of 5 vol% carbon nanotubes (CNT) and functionalized carbon nanotubes (fCNT) in UHMWPE (denoted as U) affects the mechanical properties (hardness, elastic modulus) and tribological properties (wear resistance) of biocomposites. To form a composite, powders were mixed using a planetary centrifugal mixer followed by freeze‐drying to disperse‐CNTs, followed by its compression molding at 220°C for 1 h at 10 MPa. With the addition of CNT and fCNT, ≥95% densification was obtained for all samples resulting an increase in hardness and elastic modulus from 74.96 MPa to 168.11 MPa (124%) and 1.65 GPa to 2.96 GPa (79%), respectively, which led to the reduction in wear rate from 12.5 × 10−5 mm3/Nm (U) to 2.5 × 10−5 mm3/Nm (UfCNT). The amount of apatite formation enhanced from U (58.2%) to UfCNT (65.1%) is confirmed via X‐ray diffraction and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Cell proliferation studies have validated the cytocompatible efficacy of U‐CNT composites with osteoblast‐like MG‐63 cells, making UfCNT as potential material for acetabular cup liners.
