10. Flexible airport terminal design: Towards a framework

Abstract

Flexibility is a key driver of any successful design, specifically in highly unpredictable environment such as airport terminal. Ever growing aviation industry requires airport terminals to be planned and constructed in such a way that will allow flexibility for future design, alteration and redevelopment. The concept of flexibility in terminal design is a relatively new initiative, where existing rules or guidelines are not adequate to assist designers. A shift towards flexible design concept would allow terminal buildings to be designed to accommodate future changes and to make passengers’ journey as simple, timely and hassle free as possible. Currently available research indicates that a theoretical framework on flexible design approach for airport terminals would facilitate the future design process. The generic principles of flexibility are investigated in the current research to incorporate flexible design approaches within the process of an airport terminal design. A conceptual framework is proposed herein, which is expected to ascertain flexibility to current passenger terminal facilities within their corresponding locations as well as in future design and expansion.

Abstract

A solid rocket booster (SRB) thermal radiation model, capable of defining the influence of the plume flowfield structure on the magnitude and distribution of thermal radiation leaving the plume, was prepared and documented. Radiant heating rates may be calculated for a single SRB plume or for the dual SRB plumes astride the space shuttle. The plumes may be gimbaled in the yaw and pitch planes. Space shuttle surface geometries are simulated with combinations of quadric surfaces. The effect of surface shading is included. The computer program also has the capability to calculate view factors between the SRB plumes and space shuttle surfaces as well as surface-to-surface view factors.

Abstract

The Monte Carlo method is used to model the thermal radiation field of the plumes for the dual solid rocket boosters astride the Space Shuttle launch configuration. The model accounts for axial and radial variations in radiative properties of the plumes. The plumes are considered to be composed of a dispersion of aluminum oxide (Al2O3) particles immersed in the gaseous products of combustion. The principal emitting gases are taken to be CO, CO2, H2O, and HCl. The thermal model is based on local thermodynamic equilibrium. Scattering of radiant energy by Al2O3 particles may be treated as isotropic or anisotropic. Sample radiant heating rates to the base region of the Space Shuttle are shown. Space Shuttle geometries are simulated as combinations of quadric surfaces.

Abstract

A survey of British born Asian and English populations of children with congenital cardiac anomalies showed an increased incidence in the Muslim Asian population of complex lesions with visceral heterotaxia. There is a very high incidence of parental consanguinity among Muslim Asian children with complex congenital cardiac anomalies that is even higher than in the general Muslim Asian population of the area studied. The evidence suggests an important recessive genetic component in complex cardiac lesions with visceral heterotaxia, but segregation analysis does not support pure recessive inheritance. 38. Cardiac rhabdomyomata in tuberous sclerosis: their course and diagnostic value.

Abstract

Echocardiography was performed in 60 people with tuberous sclerosis to ascertain the prevalence and course of cardiac rhabdomyomata at different ages. Twenty five (58%) of 43 children had tumours, but only three (18%) of 17 adults. The tumours tended to remain the same size through childhood. Only three infants were included but evidence from this and some published case reports suggest that the tumours tend to regress in early infancy and again in adolescence. The prevalence of tumours in young infants with tuberous sclerosis is likely to be considerably above 50%. As other signs of tuberous sclerosis are usually absent at this age echocardiography may afford the most useful diagnostic test in early infancy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

46. Oral treatment of subacute bacterial endocarditis in children.

Abstract

Fourteen episodes of subacute bacterial endocarditis in 11 children were successfully treated with antibiotics, which in 13 cases were given largely by mouth. Abstract

Instrumentation of a buried warm-oil (71 degrees C) pipeline test section near Inuvik, N.W.T. was undertaken by Mackenzie Valley Pipeline Research Limited, with technical assistance from the Division of Building Research, National Research Council, Canada. The test section was placed in a gravel fill overlying an ice rich silt subgrade. Pore pressures in the resulting thaw bulb were measured using pneumatic piezometers and the rate of movement of the thaw bulb was determined using thermistor probes. Settlements occuring within the fill were measured and correlated with predictions made from laboratory thaw-settlement tests. As a result of this investigation a temperature buildup from 38 to 60 degrees C over a 5-year period is proposed for a full- scale pipeline operation to ensure adequately low pore pressures and to decrease the settlement rates., 2nd International Conference on Permafrost, July 1972, Yakutsk, Siberia
