Abstract

Rice cultivation in South Florida, especially within crop rotation systems, presents a promising avenue for mitigating phosphorus (P) levels in drainage water by optimizing nutrient absorption across varying flooding conditions. This study aimed to assess the impacts of different flooding depths on rice growth and nutrient efficiency while exploring the interrelationships among these factors. Conducted over a two-year period, the field study involved planting a single rice variety (Diamond: 95 kg ha−1, long-grain, short-season) at four distinct flooding depths (5, 10, 15, and 20 cm) without fertilizer application. Results revealed minimal effects of flooding depths on root and shoot length or dry matter accumulation. Additionally, concentrations of total P and potassium (K) in both shoot and root tissues remained consistent across the different flooding depths. Despite the absence of P and K fertilizer inputs, no significant changes were observed in P use efficiency (PUE), K use efficiency (KUE), or water use efficiency (WUE). Cultivating rice under optimal flood depths of 5 cm within the Everglades Agricultural Area (EAA) demonstrated potential for conserving water and essential nutrients such as P and K. These findings highlight the feasibility of rice cultivation in fertile soils as a means to decrease nutrient (P and K) concentrations in drainage water, thereby promoting sustainable agricultural practices in the region. Abstract

Soybean (Glycine max) is the single most important global source of vegetable protein. Yield improvements per unit land area are needed to avoid further expansion onto natural systems. Mesophyll conductance (gm) quantifies the ease with which CO2 can diffuse from the sub‐stomatal cavity to Rubisco. Increasing gm is attractive since it increases photosynthesis without increasing water use. Most measurements of gm have been made during steady‐state light saturated photosynthesis. In field crop canopies, light fluctuations are frequent and the speed with which gm can increase following shade to sun transitions affects crop carbon gain. Is there variability in gm within soybean germplasm? If so, indirect selection may have indirectly increased gm during domestication and subsequent breeding for sustainability and yield. A modern elite cultivar (LD11) was compared with four ancestor accessions of Glycine soja from the assumed area of domestication by concurrent measurements of gas exchange and carbon isotope discrimination (∆13C). gm was a significant limitation to soybean photosynthesis both at steady state and through light induction but was twice the value of the ancestors in LD11. This corresponded to a substantial increase in leaf photosynthetic CO2 uptake and water use efficiency. Summary statement: Mesophyll conductance (gm) describes the ease of CO2 transfer from the sub‐stomatal cavity to Rubisco, improvement would increase photosynthesis without additional water loss. gm likely doubled in soybean domestication, suggesting variation within the germplasm for exploitation by direct selection. Abstract

Knowledge of the yield of short-season crops under insufficient irrigation is of particular importance for regions that face water deficit during the plant growth period. This experiment was carried out by investigating the effects of organic and biological fertilizers on the growth, yield and water use efficiency of mung bean plants under water deficit conditions and the traits affecting grain yield. Experiment treatments including irrigation at three levels (100, 80 and 60% of water requirement (WR)), organic fertilizer (0 and 16 and 24 t/ha manure) and biofertilizer (control, Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi and enterobacter (EB)). In stress and non-stressed conditions, the application of AM and organic fertilizer has increased the number of seeds and the number of plant pods. The highest weight of one hundred seeds was obtained in the condition of 80% WR and application of organic and biological fertilizer. The number of primary branches was higher with the use of EB, but the highest number of secondary branches was observed in the plant with AM. The highest plant height, biological yield and seed were observed in the condition of 100% WR and 24 t/ha of organic fertilizer and application of AM and EB. The highest water use efficiency was obtained with irrigation of 80% WR and application of AM and 24 t/ha of organic fertilizer, as well as irrigation of 60% WR and application of AM and 24 t/ha of organic fertilizer. The use of organic fertilizer along with biofertilizers in stress conditions has increased the measured traits, and this increase was more in severe stress with AM than EB fertilizer. The results of the path analysis showed that the weight of one hundred seeds, the number of seeds in the pod and biological yield are the most direct effects on seed yield. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
