The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of mouth rinsing and ingesting unpleasant salty or bitter solutions on cycling sprint performance and knee extensor force characteristics. Eleven male and one female trained cyclists (age: 34 ± 9 years, maximal oxygen uptake 56.9 ± 3.9 ml·kg−1·min−1) completed a ramp test and familiarization followed by four experimental trials. In each trial, participants completed an all-out 30-s cycling sprint with knee extensor maximal voluntary contractions before and immediately after the sprint. In a randomized, counterbalanced, cross-over order, the four main trials were: a no solution control condition, water, salty (5.8%), or bitter (2 mM quinine) solutions that were mouth rinsed (10 s) and ingested immediately before the cycling sprint. There were no significant differences between conditions in mean power (mean ± SD, no solution: 822 ± 115 W, water: 818 ± 108 W, salt: 832 ± 111 W, bitter: 818 ± 105 W); peak power (no solution: 1,184 ± 205 W, water: 1,177 ± 207 W, salt: 1,195 ± 210 W, bitter: 1,184 ± 209 W); or fatigue index (no solution: 51.5% ± 5.7%, water: 50.8% ± 7.0%, salt: 51.1% ± 5.9%, bitter: 51.2% ± 7.1%) during the sprint. Maximal force and impulse declined postexercise; however, there were no significant differences between conditions in knee extensor force characteristics. An all-liquid flexible metamaterial crossing the ultrabroadband range of S, C, X, and Ku bands is reported. This work demonstrates for the first time a frequency selective absorber (FSA) using all-flexible materials, which enables a transmission band of 2.4–4 GHz and a 6–20 GHz ultrawideband absorption. Firstly, liquid metal (LM) as a new functional material with self-healing capability and high reflectivity, based on its metasurface can realize the minimum insertion loss of 0.72 dB at 3.2 GHz. Then, utilizing dielectric resonance and diffraction grating effects of the water-based metasurface, the design can achieve greater than 90% absorption in the frequency band of 6–20 GHz, with a relative bandwidth of 107%. Furthermore, by miniaturizing the design, the FSA exhibits high stability in TM mode with oblique incidence up to 60° and TE mode at 45°. Our design can be fabricated using polydimethylsiloxane lithography and encapsulated with water and LM with a thickness of only 8 mm. Finally, the fabricated FSA are tested by bending to different curvatures, and the good performance indicates its promising applications in electromagnetic stealth, compatibility and wearable devices. Two-dimensional (2D) materials are attracting much attention as emerging photocatalytic water splitting candidates in green and clean energy applications. In this work, we designed four 2D materials, ZnPS 3 , ZnPSe 3 , CdPS 3 and CdPSe 3 , which possess high stability, moderate band-gaps (2.24–3.29 eV), and anisotropic carrier mobilities of 192.26 ─ 676.04 cm2/Vs. Besides, they also have suitable band edges of REDOX at PH = 0, which can simultaneously drive photocatalytic water splitting to produce H 2 and O 2 , and show acceptable free energy for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) of 0.89–1.20 eV. Moreover, monolayer ZnPSe 3 and CdPSe 3 can deliver strong absorption coefficients (∼105 cm−1) from visible to ultraviolet light. As a result, they have excellent solar-to-hydrogen efficiency of 18.39% and 19.70%, suggesting they are promising photocatalytic candidates for overall water splitting. • 2D ZnPS 3 , ZnPSe 3 , CdPS 3 and CdZnSe 3 have high stability, as well as low cleavage energies of 0.21–0.25 J/m2. • They are indirect semiconductors with band-gaps of 2.24–3.29 eV, and show mobilities of 192.26–676.04 cm2/Vs at 300 K. • They also have suitable REDOX band-edges, which can drive photocatalytic water splitting to produce H 2 and O 2. • Monolayer ZnPSe 3 and CdPSe 3 have excellent solar-to-hydrogen efficiency of 18.39% and 19.70%. Water exhibits various politico-economic dynamic. Water scarcity can lead to conflicts, and it lies at the core of Iran's environmental crises. The literature on Iran's water crisis indicates the effects of this issue in terms of multidimensional environmental degradation, community disintegration, and state-society and intercommunal conflict. Approximately 28 million of Iran's 85 million residents reside in water-stressed areas, a situation identified as 'water bankruptcy'. The water shortage is experienced differently across the country. The plateau's central regions, home to Iran's major industries, are where the worst water deficit is occurring. However, regions with abundant water resources have also been impacted. These regions – known as 'donor basins' – due to intensive and disproportional inter-basin water transfer and other engineering interventions deployed by the Government to deal with the water shortage of the central regions, suffer from a different form of water crisis. A condition of asymmetrical and conflictual power relations between the state and subaltern communities in Iran's peripheral regions has been created. This paper argues that this constitutes environmental racism, characterised by multilayered impoverishment and unsustainable development among communities in the donor regions. Excessive urban household water usage is a pressing global issue faced by many cities. This study aims to develop a concise yet encompassing taxonomy of water demand management strategies, offering a clear and organized framework that enables comparison and evaluation of strategies, informs policy and decision-making, and fosters an interdisciplinary approach to water demand management research. An analytical literature review using grounded theory and hermeneutics was conducted to find key concepts and constructs, identify relationships among them, and synthesize these elements into a coherent framework. The resulting taxonomy presents a classification of demand management strategies into five categories: Psychological, Educational-Communicational, Technological, Economical, and Coercive-Legal. Dehydration is a typical problem among the elderly people who live in nursing homes. It is a condition that is costly in terms of health care costs and length of treatment due to the illnesses it causes. It is a condition that can be prevented, and elderly people can benefit from initiatives to increase their fluid intake. This study aimed to find out how the hydration status of elderly people is affected by hydration education. It was also an assessment of the participants' hydration status and water intake from sources. Forty-three elderly people from two nursing homes participated in this quasi-experimental study. There were 25 elderly in the intervention group (IG) and 18 in the control group (CG). For one month, 40-minute sessions per week (20 minutes of education and 20 minutes of activity) were devoted to teaching about fluid consumption. To evaluate the effectiveness of the education, the water balance questionnaire, urine USG and pH measurement, and the Physical Activity Scale for the Elderly were assessed before, at the end of the intervention, and three months after. The results showed that the IG group's hydration improved, and their short-term water consumption increased. Education needs to be carefully implemented and the results followed up to ensure that elderly people develop a habit of drinking water. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: Otitis externa is a common condition managed by junior doctor-led ENT clinics in secondary/tertiary care, but no national guidelines exist for presentations in these settings. The aim of this study was to implement a treatment algorithm to support junior doctors and improve otitis externa management. Methods: Baseline data were retrospectively collected for 16 weeks. A standardised otitis externa treatment algorithm was then implemented, and 16 weeks of data prospectively gathered. A second improvement cycle was completed thereafter focusing on topical antibiotics and water precaution advice. Results: Overall, 202 cases of otitis externa managed between November 2021 to October 2022 were reviewed. Following the interventions, topical antibiotic prescribing improved (p = 0.01) as well as the provision of water precaution advice (p < 0.01). Junior doctors trended towards reviewing patients more frequently but required less senior support. Conclusion: Our treatment algorithm empowers junior doctors to become more independent in their management of otitis externa and improves overall otitis externa treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background and Aims Plant water status is important for fruit development, because many fleshy fruits contain large amounts of water. However, there is no information on vascular flows of Persea americana 'Hass' avocado. The aims of this research were to explore the impact of drought stress on the water relationships of the 'Hass' avocado plant and its fruit growth. Methods Well-watered and water-stressed 'Hass' avocado plants were compared. Over 4 weeks, water flows through the shoot and fruit pedicel were monitored using external sap flow gauges. Fruit diameter was monitored using linear transducers, and stomatal conductance (g s), photosynthesis (A) and leaf and stem water potentials (Ѱleaf and Ѱstem) were measured to assess the response of the plants to water supply. Key Results In well-watered conditions, the average water inflow to the shoot was 72 g day−1. Fruit water inflow was 2.72 g day−1, but there was water loss of 0.37 g day−1 caused by the outflow (loss back into the tree) through the vascular tissues and 1.06 g day−1 from the fruit skin. Overall, fruit volume increased by 1.4 cm3 day−1. In contrast, water flow into fruit of water-stressed plants decreased to 1.88 g day−1, with the outflow increasing to 0.61 g day−1. As a result, increases in fruit volume were reduced to 0.4 cm3 day−1. The values of A , g s and sap flow to shoots were also reduced during drought conditions. Changes in the hourly time-courses of pedicel sap flow, fruit volume and stem water potential during drought suggest that the stomatal response prevented larger increases in outflow from the fruit. Following re-watering, a substantial recovery in growth rate was observed. Conclusions In summary, a reduction in growth of avocado fruit was observed with induced water deficit, but the isohydric stomatal behaviour of the leaves helped to minimize negative changes in water balance. Also, there was substantial recovery after re-watering, hence the short-term water stress did not decrease avocado fruit size. Negative impacts might appear if the drought treatment were prolonged. Synthetic heat transfer fluids are of immense importance for solar thermal application due to its low vapour pressure, low melting point and high heat capacity. Commonly used synthetic heat transfer fluids are biphenyl and diphenyloxide mixture, imidazolium ionic liquid and terphenyl based chemistry. However these fluids are not found effective above 400 °C operating temperatures as they tend to degrade. As per literature inputs polyaromatic based molecules like 1-phenylnaphthalene (1-PNP) and 2-methy-l-phenylnaphthalene have thermal stability above 400 °C. In the present research work a simple, efficient and environmentally benign procedure of Suzuki coupling is employed for the synthesis of these molecules in the presence of ligand free refinery Pd-spent catalyst in water. The catalyst was found to be recyclable up to 3 times without any loss of efficiency. The synthesized polyaromatic based heat transfer fluid molecules in the presence of radical quencher which indicates their potential for high temperature application. Historical research on urban epidemics has focused on the interaction of diseases with social and spatial gradients, such as class, ethnicity, or neighborhood. Even sophisticated historical studies usually lack data on health-related behavior or health-related perceptions, which modern analysts tend to emphasize. With detailed source material from the Finnish city of Tampere during a typhoid epidemic in 1916, we are able to combine both dimensions and look at how material and social constraints interacted with behavior and knowledge to produce unequal outcomes. We use data on socioeconomic status, location, and physical habitat as well as the self-reported behavior and expressed understandings of transmission mechanisms of the infected people to identify the determinants of some falling ill earlier or later than others. Applying survival analysis to approximately 2,500 cases, we show that disease avoidance behavior was deficient and constrained by physical habitat, regardless of considerable public health campaigning. Behavioral guidelines issued by authorities were sub-optimally communicated, unrealistic, and inadequately followed. Boiling water was hampered by shared kitchens, and access to laundry houses for additional hygiene was uneven. Centralized chemical water purification finally leveled the playing field by socializing the cost of prevention and eliminating key sources of unequal risk. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Adenoviruses (AdVs) have a significant impact in both medical and environmental contexts. The objective of this study was to investigate the prevalence of AdV in different water types, such as untreated and treated wastewater, surface water, groundwater, drinking water, and other water matrices. A total of 239 articles were included in this meta-analysis. Adenoviruses were detected in various waters worldwide. The overall prevalence in water was found to be 59.2%, with the highest prevalence in untreated wastewater (83.1%) and treated wastewater (75.3%), followed by "other water matrices" (53.4%), surface water (49.5%) drinking water (22.7%), and groundwater (18.5%). Most of the studies did not assess the viability of the viruses, leading to weak links between water contamination and risk. Both human and animal AdV were found in water environments. The findings suggest that water, including drinking water, could be a significant route of AdV transmission in both developed and developing economies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Experiments were carried out to transfer diethylamine (DEA) from water to carbon tetrachloride under static conditions inside a 50 cm3 buret for the fixed initial concentration of 2.5 mol dm−3. Initial concentration was chosen after ruling out lower concentrations to study the long-term instability. The phase volumes (i.e., 5 and 10 cm3) were equal for the separate trials at different extraction times. During extraction, intermittent interfacial jerking occurred up to 1800 s. After this time, the jerking frequency decreased and disappeared by 3600 s. The jerking time interval increased as the extraction progressed. Jerking resulted in profuse streaming into the extract phase, coupled with a throw of liquid from the interfacial region to the bulk of the aqueous phase. The complete concentration profiles of the solute in both phases were developed immediately after the jerking phenomena. In the aqueous phase, the concentration profiles revealed one and two zones of the minimum concentration of DEA in the bulk of the 5- and 10-cm3 phase volumes, respectively. The interfacial mass transfer coefficient during the jerking was high due to the absence of any interfacial barrier. The interfacial mass transfer coefficient in the absence of instability was much less than that in the presence of jerking. Also, it was higher than that for the systems where unidirectional ejections occurred due to the energy instability of the liquid–liquid interface. A new method using fluorescence was developed to detect Hg2+ ions in water. This method relied on the reaction between NH2‐MIL‐53(Al) and 5‐bromo‐2‐hydroxyacetophenone. The method was carefully fine‐tuned for optimal reaction conditions and analytical parameters like pH levels, nanosensor quantity, and detection limits. It showed great linearity in detecting Hg2+ ions in the range of 0.0–3.0 ppm (0.0–1.50 × 10−5 M), with a very low detection limit of 1.65 × 10−2 ppm (8.23 × 10−8 M). We tested how well the method can distinguish between different substances by investigating whether other common substances in water samples would interfere. The results were positive, as the presence of these substances did not significantly affect the accuracy of detecting Hg2+ ions, confirming the method's reliability. In order to confirm its dependability, we conducted a quantitative test to detect Hg2+ ions in water samples. The recovery rates obtained ranged from 97.16% to 103.2%, demonstrating the method's precision and accuracy. A comparison with inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP‐OES), a well‐known method for analyzing trace metals, produced similar results, further instilling confidence in the 5Br2HA = N‐Al‐MOF nanosensor that was developed. In general, this research emphasizes the exciting potential of the new nanosensor in detecting Hg2+ ions in various water and cosmetic samples. Ethiopia is one of the sub‐Saharan African countries where underweight among women of reproductive age is high, and it is predisposing to low birth weight, preterm birth, and reduced resistance to infections. Poor water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) and drinking water polluted with disease‐causing microorganisms lead to undernutrition. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the association between WASH and underweight among women of reproductive age at Arba Minch Health and Demographic Surveillance Site (HDSS), Southern Ethiopia. A community‐based cross‐sectional study was conducted at Arba Minch HDSS, South Ethiopia, from April to May 2022. Women of reproductive age were included in the study. Data were collected using a pre‐tested questionnaire and checklist. Multivariate analysis was conducted to assess the association separately for WASH indicators with underweight status of the women by adjusting for sociodemographic characteristics. Adjusted Odds Ratio (AOR) with a 95% confidence interval was used to assess the association. The prevalence of underweight and overweight/obesity among women of reproductive age was 7.82% (95% CI: 5.60, 10.81) and 12.32% (95% CI: 9.50, 15.83), respectively. Latrine hygiene and use were significantly associated with being underweight. The odds of being underweight among those who use clean latrine were 0.43 (95% CI: 0.20, 0.92) compared to those who use unclean latrine or do not have toilet facilities. The utilization of clean latrine facilities is negatively associated with being underweight among women of reproductive age. From WASH components, latrine utilization and keeping the latrine clean to use need to get focused on reducing the risk of being underweight among women of reproductive age. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Knowledge of diffusion in water or aqueous solutions of sodium chloride with dissolved hydrogen and methane is important for geological hydrogen storage. This study examines the accessibility of diffusivities in the corresponding mixtures through dynamic light scattering at macroscopic thermodynamic equilibrium and provides corresponding data for hydrogen-storage-relevant temperatures T up to 393 K and pressures up to 20 MPa. The thermal and mutual diffusivities are simultaneously accessible in mixtures of water and hydrogen. Moreover, for water with dissolved mixtures of hydrogen and methane, the thermal diffusivity and an apparent diffusivity related to the diffusion of the gas mixture can be accessed. In aqueous solutions of sodium chloride at T > 300 K, a strong molecular association leading to a quasi-static light-scattering pattern in the liquid sample was observed, which hindered the determination of the molecular gas diffusivities. However, the salt diffusion coefficient was accessible for all T values. This paper examines how struggles for housing and other basic services such as water and electricity are characterised in South Africa. There has been a shift in categorising local protests from the previously accepted “service delivery protests” to other phrases such as “local political protests” or “local protests” or “community protests.” Drawing from data gathered through in-depth interviews and focus group discussions in Gugulethu and Khayelitsha, two townships in Cape Town, South Africa, I argue that these new concepts conceal the service delivery-related challenges faced by poor communities throughout South Africa. The paper’s focus on housing stems from the fact that a house often functions as a site where several services come together. While protests are nuanced and have varying reasons, they have a large service delivery component. As such, the study of protest in South Africa will benefit from research that spotlights service delivery problems. Microplastic occurrence in the aquatic ecosystem has become of great concern worldwide because of its persistence, durability, and toxicity. Microplastics are found ubiquitous in freshwater environments, including rivers. Thus, our study assesses microplastic pollution in water, sediment, and fish of the Kahayan River, Indonesia. We first evaluated microplastics’ occurrence, abundance, and characteristics in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia. The average abundance of microplastic in water was 2.92 ± 2.62 items/L, while in sediment was 6.93 ± 3.15 items/Kg dry weight. We found 53 out of 90 fish (58.89%) had microplastics in their digestive tracts with an average abundance of 2.03 ± 3.416 items/Ind. The predominant characteristics in water were fragment and fibre and size of 150-<300 µm. Microplastics present in the sediment and the digestive tract of fish have similar dominant fibre. In terms of size, sediments and fish were dominated by 150-<300 µm, 1000–5000 µm, and 500-<1000 µm respectively with different order of proportions. The infrared spectroscopic analysis confirmed the most common polymer type to be polyvinyl chloride in water and sediment, while polyethylene was predominant in fish. Water molecules, which act as both solvent and reactant, play critical roles in photocatalytic reactions for methanol conversion. However, the influence of water on the adsorption of methanol and desorption of liquid products, which are two essential steps that control the performance in photocatalysis, has been well under‐explored. Herein, we reveal the role of water in heterogeneous photocatalytic processes of methanol conversion on the platinized carbon nitride (Pt/C3N4) model photocatalyst. In situ spectroscopy techniques, isotope effects, and computational calculations demonstrate that water shows adverse effects on the adsorption of methanol molecules and desorption processes of methanol oxidation products on the surface of Pt/C3N4, significantly altering the reaction pathways in photocatalytic methanol conversion process. Guided by these discoveries, a photothermal‐assisted photocatalytic system is designed to achieve a high solar‐to‐hydrogen (STH) conversion efficiency of 2.3 %, which is among the highest values reported. Understanding the fracture behavior of rock after coupled water and thermal environment is important for many geotechnical projects. This study examines the influence of coupled water and thermal treatments on the fracture toughness and characteristics of a typical sandstone under mode I and mode II loading conditions. Notched deep beam (NDB) specimens were utilized and subjected to soaking treatments at various water temperatures (23 °C, 60 °C, and 99 °C). The experimental results indicate a significant reduction in both mode I and mode II fracture toughness values, with reductions ranging from 15.4% to 13.2% for mode I and 26.1% to 8.9% for mode II respectively. As the water temperatures increase, a slightly rising trend is observed in both mode I and mode II fracture toughness within the examined temperature range. Sandstone specimens displayed typical brittle fracture characteristics at lower soaking temperatures. For mode I specimens, an increase in ductility was evident with higher soaking temperatures, while the ductile behavior is less pronounced in the mode II specimens. Based on the Maximum Tangential Stress (MTS) criterion and the Generalized Maximum Tangential Stress (GMTS) criterion, the predicted values of mode II fracture toughness and the fracture process zone (FPZ) were discussed. The results show that both the GMTS and MTS criteria exhibit inaccuracies in predicting the mode II fracture toughness of sandstone treated at different soaking water temperatures. However, the GMTS criterion, which incorporates T-stress, demonstrates smaller errors compared to the MTS criterion. The study shows that the radius r0 of the fracture process zone is not a constant under both mode I and mode II loading conditions. The calculation of the fracture process zone radius r0 in the GMTS criterion requires further theoretical and experimental study. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Women constitute most volunteer water stewards in West Virginia. After having conducted participatory research on the motivations behind women’s engagement with water preservation and restoration work we carried out two participatory art-based activities. In this Practices and Curations, we reflect on these two art-based activities to facilitate networking between researchers and participants and to communicate to the wider public the role of women water stewards. Together with community partners we first organized an icebreaker for women to share a boundary object that signified their connection with water. These boundary objects were subsequently displayed in an art exhibit highlighting women’s connection to water, their reasons for care work and the consistent role they had played in environmental preservation in West Virginia. We conclude by providing incitements to our fellow academics to engage with art in participatory geographical research as a learning experience that can overturn the common researcher-researched power dynamics. Knowledge regarding the abundance and distribution of solar wind (SW)‐sourced water (OH/H2O) on the Moon in the shallow subsurface remains limited. Here, we report the NanoSIMS measurements of H abundances and D/H ratios on soil grains from three deepest sections of the Chang'E‐5 drill core sampled at depths of 0.45–0.8 m. High water contents of 0.13–1.3 wt.% are present on approximately half of the grain surfaces (topmost ∼100 nm), comparable to the values of Chang'E‐5 scooped soils. The extremely low δD values (as low as −995‰) and negative correlations between δD and water contents indicate that SW implantation is an important source of water beneath the lunar surface. The results are indicative of homogeneous distribution of SW‐derived water in the vertical direction, providing compelling evidence for the well‐mixed nature of the lunar regolith. Moreover, the findings demonstrate that the shallow subsurface regolith of the Moon contains a considerable amount of water. Plain Language Summary: Recently, China's Chang'E‐5 mission targeted a higher latitude on the Moon than previous Apollo and Luna missions, and brought back scooped and drilled samples to the Earth. These new soil samples provide an opportunity to investigate the distribution, abundance, and origin(s) of water in Moon's middle latitude. Here, we focus on using the NanoSIMS technique to analyze water content on soil near‐surface regions to understand whether the solar wind (SW)‐derived water could be preserved after burial at depth. Our results show that more than half of the core soils have high water contents on the rims of grains, similar to those of the Chang'E‐5 scooped soils. This finding suggests that the SW remains an important source of water in the Moon's subsurface. Our work provides direct evidence that the lunar regolith below the surface contains considerable water from SW implantation. This type of water could be a promising water resource in future exploration. Simple Summary: External dose rate measurements for I-125 permanent radioactive source implantation brachytherapy for prostate cancer requires standardized external dose rate measurements and radiation safety procedures. We developed predictive models for external dose rates to ensure compliance with radiation safety guidelines. We used Monte Carlo simulation and experimental measurements to construct an external dose rate model. The model's accuracy was validated against external dose rate measurements from clinical patients. This model facilitates the calculation and minimization of family members' radiation dose, aiding in the development of personalized radiation protection strategies. This study uses Monte Carlo simulation and experimental measurements to develop a predictive model for estimating the external dose rate associated with permanent radioactive source implantation in prostate cancer patients. The objective is to estimate the accuracy of the patient's external dose rate measurement. First, I-125 radioactive sources were implanted into Mylar window water phantoms to simulate the permanent implantation of these sources in patients. Water phantom experimental measurement was combined with Monte Carlo simulation to develop predictive equations, whose performance was verified against external clinical data. Water constitutes an indispensable resource crucial for the sustenance of humanity, as it plays an integral role in various sectors such as agriculture, industrial processes, and domestic consumption. Even though water covers 71% of the global land surface, governments have been grappling with the challenge of ensuring the provision of safe water for domestic use. A contributing factor to this situation is the persistent contamination of available water sources rendering them unfit for human consumption. A common contaminant, pesticides are not frequently tested for despite their serious effects on biodiversity. Pesticide determination in water quality assessment is a challenging task because the procedures involved in the extraction and detection are complex. This reduces their popularity in many monitoring campaigns despite their harmful effects. If the existing methods of pesticide analysis are adapted by leveraging new technologies, then information concerning their presence in water ecosystems can be exposed. Furthermore, beyond the advantages conferred by the integration of wireless sensor networks (WSNs), the Internet of Things (IoT), Machine Learning (ML), and big data analytics, a notable outcome is the attainment of a heightened degree of granularity in the information of water ecosystems. This paper discusses methods of pesticide detection in water, emphasizing the possible use of electrochemical sensors, biosensors, and paper-based sensors in wireless sensing. JUK-8 ([Zn(oba)(pip)]n, oba2– = 4,4′-oxybis(benzenedicarboxylate), pip = 4-pyridyl-functionalized benzene-1,3-dicarbohydrazide) is a hydrolytically stable flexible metal-organic framework. Owing to its unusual adsorptive properties, JUK-8 can be considered as a promising sensing material for construction of detectors of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in air. Quasi-equilibrated temperature-programmed desorption and adsorption (QE-TPDA) is a versatile method dedicated to characterization of porous materials. In this work, QE-TPDA was employed to study co-adsorption of water and selected alcohols in JUK-8. For the first time an infrared detector sensitive to organic compounds was used in the QE-TPDA measurements, allowing the study of the influence of water vapor on sorption of VOCs. The QE-TPDA profiles of the studied alcohols, exhibiting two desorption maxima and two adsorption minima, are consistent with the standard sorption isotherms, revealing a two-step adsorption–desorption mechanism. The profiles recorded in the presence of water are noticeably changed in different ways for different alcohols. While at low relative humidity (RH) (ca. 20%) the low temperature adsorption states of ethanol and 1-propanol were only slightly destabilized, for 2-propanol almost complete suppression of adsorption was observed. The results found for moderate RH levels (ca. 50%) indicated that the opening of the JUK-8 structure, responsible for its breathing behavior, was followed by the filling of the just generated pores with a water–alcohol mixture. Mounting experimental evidence supports the existence of a liquid--liquid transition (LLT) in high-pressure supercooled water. However, fast crystallization of supercooled water has impeded identification of the LLT line TLL(p) in experiments. While the most accurate all-atom (AA) water models display a LLT, their computational cost limits investigations of its interplay with ice formation. Coarse-grained (CG) models provide over 100-fold computational efficiency gain over AA models, enabling the study of water crystallization, but have not yet shown to have a LLT. Here, we demonstrate that the CG machine-learned water model Machine-Learned Bond-Order Potential (ML-BOP) has a LLT that ends in a critical point at Pc = 170 ± 10 MPa and Tc = 181 ± 3 K. The TLL(p) of ML-BOP is almost identical to the one of TIP4P/2005, adding to the similarity in the equation of state of liquid water in both models. Cooling simulations reveal that ice crystallization is fastest at the LLT and its supercritical continuation of maximum heat capacity, supporting a mechanistic relationship between the structural transformation of water to a low-density liquid (LDL) and ice formation. We find no signature of liquid-liquid criticality in the ice crystallization temperatures. ML-BOP replicates the competition between formation of LDL and ice observed in ultrafast experiments of decompression of the high-density liquid (HDL) into the region of stability of LDL. The simulations reveal that crystallization occurs prior to the coarsening of the HDL and LDL domains, obscuring the distinction between the highly metastable first-order LLT and pronounced structural fluctuations along its supercritical continuation. Paracetamol (PC), the active ingredient in Efferalgan, is an effervescent tablet medicine used in the treatment of mild-to-moderate pain. Chitosan (CH) is a biopolymer having immense structural possibilities for chemical and mechanical modifications to generate novel properties, functions and applications, especially in the pharmaceutical area. The dynamic viscosities, η, have been measured, and investigated for the mixture of CH in acidic water and paracetamol aqueous solutions over the entire range of the temperature 20–65°C, and concentrations of 1–10 g/l. The main objective of our research described here was to determine the viscometric properties of biopolymer solutions of CH in PC, as a function of the volume fraction fCH in the CH and PC mixture and temperatures. We identified three main concentration regimes, corresponding to a dilute regime, a critical regime and the semi-dilute regime. Our results showed that the CH/PC is a promising mixture for use in pharmaceutical and antibacterial applications. In order to investigate the dynamic process of the heat and mass transfer phenomenon of water vapor on activated carbon, a fixed‐column adsorption unit and two kinds of activated carbon were used as adsorbent for water vapor adsorption under the adsorption temperature 293.15 K, 303.15 K and 313.15 K, respectively. A coupled model was developed by mass and energy balance, mass transfer and simplified DO adsorption equilibrium equation. The effects of physical parameters on heat and mass transfer were theoretically investigated. Results show that the numerical model match well with the experimental data (R2>0.993). The axial diffusion coefficient (DL) increases from 1.226×10−6 m2 s−1 to 4.062×10−6 m2 s−1 for RAC and 1.425×10−6 m2 s−1 to 4.030×10−6 m2 s−1 for MAC, mass transfer coefficient (k) increases from 8.171 s−1 to 27.083 s−1 for RAC and 9.499 s−1 to 26.864 s−1 for MAC. Concurrently, the breakthrough time of adsorption water vapor gradually shorten from 1000 s to 780 s with temperature increasing from 293.15 K to 313.15 K. The effect of axial diffusion coefficient (DL) on mass transfer is not obvious. The aim of this study was to develop a photothermal material modified with carbonization and ZnCl2 impregnation and supported by polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) for water purification using the waste coffee grounds. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) characterization of the prepared material revealed that a significant surface modification was achieved due to the carbonization and ZnCl2 impregnation. X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) pattern of the samples showed two broad peaks at 18.4° and 22.2°, this is due to the crystal planes of β-crystal phase structure, which indicates the existence of strong hydrogen bonds between the micro-structures and therefore less suspectable to chemical attack. Additionally, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) result suggests a slight mass reduction between the temperature range of 65–75 °C implying the thermal stability of the prepared material. The produced modified material had a photothermal conversion efficiency of 74% and could produce vapor at a rate of 1.12 kg/m2h under 980 W/m2 irradiation at 1 sun. A significant reduction in Cu2+ ion concentration (83%), turbidity (91%), total dissolved solids (TDS) (61%), microbial load (95.6%), and total hardness (41.2%) were achieved. Response of growth and morphology of Dracaena cambodiana seedlings, a rare and endangered plant, was studied by observing its response to five artificially controlled water supply levels. The results indicated that different levels of water supply significantly affected morphological indices and biomass. Except for specific leaf area, the ratio of leaf length to width and plant height, other indicators reached significant levels (P<0. 05). The allocation of biomass is mainly related to root traits, and there is no significant difference in chlorophyll and carotenoid content among different treatments in seedlings. According to the analysis, the seedlings could make full use of water to achieve rapid growth in the short and concentrated rainy season, and allocating more biomass to the root was good for the severe drought season after the rainy season. We analyse the main keys of the traditional agroecosystem of the palm grove (Phoenix canariensis) in irrigated terraces in Valle de Arriba in the municipality of Valle Gran Rey (La Gomera, Canary Islands, Spain). Here, irrigation water is not only associated with the land but is also being managed as a communal resource by the inhabitants. The change in the economic model from agriculture to tourism is putting the survival of this traditional agrarian system at risk (agricultural exit, population ageing and economic touristification). The need for preservation is then suggested, but the question that leads us to a re-edition of the so-called “Tragedy of the Commons” arises again: What actors should carry out this preservation? Private agents or the State, as suggested by Hardin, or the rural community, as maintained by Ostrom? We conclude that for the case studied of La Gomera, the rural community has kept managing the communal water resource but at the expense of the secular class struggles won by the farming community against the privatisation of water by private agents and/or the State. The translational diffusivity of covalent open‐[60]fullerene dimers in an organic solvent was found to be well describable by a prolate ellipsoid model while a monomeric open‐[60]fullerene behaves like a sphere model. The sensitivity of cytosol water's microwave dielectric (MD) response to D-glucose uptake in Red Blood Cells (RBCs) allows the detailed study of cellular mechanisms as a function of controlled exposures to glucose and other related analytes like electrolytes. However, the underlying mechanism behind the sensitivity to glucose exposure remains a topic of debate. In this research, we utilize MDS within the frequency range of 0.5–40 GHz to explore how ionic redistributions within the cell impact the microwave dielectric characteristics associated with D-glucose uptake in RBC suspensions. Specifically, we compare glucose uptake in RBCs exposed to the physiological concentration of Ca2+ vs. Ca-free conditions. We also investigate the potential involvement of Na+/K+ redistribution in glucose-mediated dielectric response by studying RBCs treated with a specific Na+/K+ pump inhibitor, ouabain. We present some insights into the MD response of cytosol water when exposed to Ca2+ in the absence of D-glucose. Identifying the most important factors affecting population growth in animal life cycles is an important tool of species conservation. Delta Smelt (Hypomesus transpacificus), an annual fish endemic to the San Francisco Estuary in California (USA), has been provided legal protection since 1993 but 30 years later exists in a conservation‐reliant state on the brink of extinction. Despite considerable controversies about what factors are most responsible for the species' decline, no population growth rate sensitivity comparisons between the most important factors regulating growth have been done. Nor has anyone attempted to quantitatively identify habitat conditions needed to support positive population growth. We developed a set of stage‐structured population models to link habitat indices regulating recruitment of new generations of fish as they metamorphosed into juveniles and the subsequent survival of those fish over several seasons until they reached adulthood. These models are used to quantify drivers of growth rate variation over 30 years. Several complimentary sensitivity analyses indicated freshwater outflow to the estuary during summer had the largest potential to change population growth. Multiple habitat metrics (e.g., food availability, temperature) influencing recruitment and life stage specific survival rates across different seasons interacted in nonlinear ways to determine habitat conditions and water management targets associated with positive population growth. We discuss the implications for freshwater management, Delta Smelt conservation, and the challenges climate change poses for co‐implementation of these two societal priorities. Silicone elastomers are high-performance plastics. In the extrusion process, only high-consistency silicone rubbers were used. In order to reduce the cost and weight, silicone rubbers can be foamed during processing. In this study, high-consistency silicone rubber is processed with different physical and chemical blowing agents. The resulting reaction kinetics, as well as the mechanical and morphological properties, had been investigated and compared with each other. This showed that the chemical blowing agent significantly influenced the crosslinking reaction compared to the microspheres and the water/silica mixture tested, but it also achieved the lowest density compared to the physical blowing agents. When evaluating the foam morphology, it became clear that the largest number of pores was achieved with the microspheres and the largest pores when using the water/silica mixture. Furthermore, it has been shown that the different mechanisms of action of the blowing agents have a major influence on the mechanical properties, such as the micro shore hardness and the foam morphology. The most reliable methods for pregnancy diagnosis in dairy herds include rectal palpation, ultrasound examination, and evaluation of plasma progesterone concentrations. However, these methods are expensive, labor-intensive, and invasive. Thus, there is a need to develop a practical, non-invasive, cost-effective method that can be implemented on the farm to detect pregnancy. This study suggests employing microwave dielectric spectroscopy (MDS, 0.5–40 GHz) as a method to evaluate reproduction events in dairy cows. The approach involves the integration of MDS data with information on milk solids to detect pregnancy and identify early embryonic loss in dairy cows. To test the ability to predict pregnancy according to these measurements, milk samples were collected from (i) pregnant and non-pregnant randomly selected cows, (ii) weekly from selected cows (n = 12) before insemination until a positive pregnancy test, and (iii) daily from selected cows (n = 10) prior to insemination until a positive pregnancy test. The results indicated that the dielectric strength of Δε and the relaxation time, τ, exhibited reduced variability in the case of a positive pregnancy diagnosis. Using principal component analysis (PCA), a clear distinction between pregnancy and nonpregnancy status was observed, with improved differentiation upon a higher sampling frequency. Additionally, a neural network machine learning technique was employed to develop a prediction algorithm with an accuracy of 73%. These findings demonstrate that MDS can be used to detect changes in milk upon pregnancy. These include grazing when feed quality is high, the use of dietary additives, breeding of animals with higher growth rates and increased fecundity, rumen microbial manipulations using vaccines and other additives, soil management to reduce nitrous oxide emission, management systems to improve carbon sequestration, improved nutrient use efficacy, use of cover crops, low-emission composting barns, covered manure storages, and direct injection of animal slurry into soil. Other technologies and systems to provide further solutions continue to be researched. Lead (Pb2+), due to its non‐biodegradable property and biological accumulation, would have adverse effects on human body. In this study, a poly(pyrrole thiourea) modified electrode was developed using the electropolymerization of pyrrole and thiourea. Compared with drop‐casting method, the immobilization of the modified material with fixator and the modification efficiency of an electrode was improved. The poly(pyrrole thiourea) electrode was applied for the in‐situ determination of Pb2+ in water coupled with an electrochemical flow analysis device. Several experimental parameters were optimized and the interference of the common co‐existing ions were evaluated. The precision and the repeatability of the electrode‐modified method were also examined. The relative standard deviation of response currents to 20 μg L−1 Pb2+ was found to be 4.6 % (n=90) and the recoveries varied from 91.6 % to 110.2 % in the determination of tap water and lake water samples obtained from laboratories and the university campuses. The limit of detection (3σ/Slope) of 0.03 μg L−1 for Pb2+ within the range of 0.1–100 μg L−1. Finally, the continuous monitoring of Pb2+ in water was successfully done by this developed method. The female Aedes aegypti mosquito is a vector for several arboviral diseases, due to their blood feeding behavior and their association with urban communities. While ion transport in Ae. aegypti has been studied, much less is known about mechanisms of water transport. Rapid water and ion excretion occurs in the adult female mosquito post blood meal and involves a set of organs including the midgut, Malpighian tubules (MTs), and hindgut. The MTs are responsible for the formation of primary urine and are considered the most important site for active transport of ions. Within the cells of the MTs, along with various ion transporters, there are aquaporin water channels that aid in the transport of water across the tubule cell membrane. Six aquaporin genes have been molecularly identified in Ae. aegypti (AQP1–6) and found to be responsible for the transport of water and in some cases, small solutes such as glycerol. In this study, we used immunohistochemistry to localize AaAQP1, 2, 4, 5, and 6 in the adult female Ae. aegypti, in non-blood fed and post blood feeding (0.5 and 24hr) conditions. We further examined the main water transporting aquaporin, AaAQP1, using western blotting to determine protein abundance changes in isolated MTs pre and post-blood feeding. Using fluorescence in situ hybridization, aqp1 mRNA was found exclusively in the principal cells of female MTs. Finally, we used immunogold staining with transmission electron microscopy to determine subcellular localization of AaAQP1 in the Malpighian tubules under non-blood fed conditions. Interestingly, AaAQP1 was found to be predominantly in the principal cells of the MTs, dispersed throughout the brush border; however, there was also evidence of some AaAQP1 localization in the stellate cells of the MTs. In the global water policy literature, integrating governance principles into water resources management is projected as the best approach to overcome the crisis in water resources management. Therefore, since 1990, many countries, including Ghana, have introduced various changes in their water sector to encourage good governance in the management of the resource. Using interviews and a review of policy and regulatory documents, this study examines recent changes in the water sector in Ghana to identify challenges for good governance in water resources management. The results suggest that the introduction of a new institutional framework and several regulatory mechanisms, including policies, rules, regulations, and laws, has decentralized water management system, increased stakeholder participation, granted voice to marginalized stakeholders, and brought government and communities together in the decision‐making process. However, the results further reveal that several challenges, including institutional barriers, exclusion or underrepresentation of key stakeholders, corruption, multisectoral conflict, collaboration preferences, and others continue to frustrate good governance in water resources management. Deliberately committing to the principles of good governance, amending ineffective regulatory mechanisms, and adequately resourcing regulatory institutions can help avoid many of the challenges in the water sector and propel the country toward sustainable water resources management. Purpose: Surface electromyography (sEMG) has been used to evaluate extrinsic laryngeal muscle activity during swallowing and phonation. In the current study, sEMG amplitudes were measured from the infrahyoid and suprahyoid muscles during phonation through a tube submerged in water. Method: The sEMG amplitude values measured from the extrinsic laryngeal muscles and the electroglottographic contact quotient (CQ) were obtained simultaneously from 62 healthy participants (31 men, 31 women) during phonation through a tube at six different depths (2, 4, 7, 10, 15, and 20 cm) while using two tubes with different diameters (1 and 0.5 cm). Results: With increasing depth, the sEMG amplitude for the suprahyoid muscles increased in men and women. However, sEMG amplitudes for the infrahyoid muscles increased significantly only in men. Tube diameter had a significant effect on the suprahyoid sEMG amplitudes only for men, with higher sEMG amplitudes when phonating with a 1.0-cm tube. CQ values increased with submerged depth for both men and women. Tube diameter affected results such than CQ values were higher for men when using the wider tube and for women with the narrower tube. Conclusions: Vocal fold vibratory patterns changed with the depth of tube submersion in water for both men and women, but the patterns of muscle activation differed between the sexes. This suggests that men and women use different strategies when confronted with increased intraoral pressure during semioccluded vocal tract exercises. Recent studies present compelling evidence that a free aqueous fluid phase exists within the upper mantle. Fluid may be present at depths as great as the transition zone (410–660 km) and possibly beyond. The chemical reactivity of such deep fluids can be predicted from the Born model of solvation. To use the Born model, we need to know the dielectric constant of water under mantle conditions. We have used ab initio molecular dynamics simulations to determine the dielectric constant of water up to a pressure of 30 GPa and a temperature of 3000 K. Increased temperature lowers the dielectric constant and decreases ion solvation, but pressure overcomes this effect. The resulting high dielectric constant suggests that aqueous mantle fluids are highly reactive for ion solvation and mineral dissolution. We tested this by using the Helgeson–Kirkham–Flowers equation of state to estimate free energies of several mineral-solution and ion solvation reactions under mantle conditions. The results support previous estimates of carbonate solubility in the mantle. We also find that mantle fluids may play a key role in transporting ore metals: we evaluated the solubility of chalcopyrite and the complexation of Cu and Fe by Cl under mantle conditions and find that metal complexation is as significant as in ore-forming fluids in the crust. At reasonable conditions of pH and f H 2 , chalcopyrite is highly soluble. We tentatively hypothesize that exsolved fluids from subducted slabs may extract and mobilize primary sulfides in the mantle, implying potentially deep sources for porphyry copper deposits. Background: People with alcohol use disorder (AUD) have an increased risk of developing pneumonia and pulmonary diseases. Alveolar macrophages (AMs) are immune cells of the lower respiratory tract that are necessary for clearance of pathogens. However, alcohol causes AM oxidative stress, mitochondrial damage and dysfunction, and diminished phagocytic capacity, leading to lung injury and immune suppression. Methods: AMs were isolated by bronchoalveolar lavage from people with AUD and male and female C57BL/6J mice given chronic ethanol (20% w/v, 12 weeks) in drinking water. The peroxisome proliferator‐activated receptor γ ligand, pioglitazone, was used to treat human AMs ex vivo (10 μM, 24 h) and mice in vivo by oral gavage (10 mg/kg/day). Levels of AM mitochondrial superoxide and hypoxia‐inducible factor‐1 alpha (HIF‐1α) mRNA, a marker of oxidative stress, were measured by fluorescence microscopy and RT‐qPCR, respectively. Mouse AM phagocytic ability was determined by internalized Staphylococcus aureus, and mitochondrial capacity, dependency, and flexibility for glucose, long‐chain fatty acid, and glutamine oxidation were measured using an extracellular flux analyzer. In vitro studies used a murine AM cell line, MH‐S (±0.08% ethanol, 72 h) to investigate mitochondrial fuel oxidation and ATP‐linked respiration. Results: Pioglitazone treatment decreased mitochondrial superoxide in AMs from people with AUD and ethanol‐fed mice and HIF‐1α mRNA in ethanol‐fed mouse lungs. Pioglitazone also reversed mouse AM glutamine oxidation and glucose or long‐chain fatty acid flexibility to meet basal oxidation needs. In vitro, ethanol decreased the rate of AM mitochondrial and total ATP production, and pioglitazone improved changes in glucose and glutamine oxidation. Conclusions: Pioglitazone reversed chronic alcohol‐induced oxidative stress in human AM and mitochondrial substrate oxidation flexibility and superoxide levels in mouse AM. Decreased ethanol‐induced AM HIF‐1α mRNA with pioglitazone suggests that this pathway may be a focus for metabolic‐targeted therapeutics to improve morbidity and mortality in people with AUD. The changing climate, rapid increases in global consumption, and shock events are increasing stress on water resources globally. For policy makers and water sector stakeholders tasked with reducing demand, and for academic researchers interested in understanding how these complex issues intertwine to create current and future water demand profiles, the shortcomings of individualized behavior change approaches driven by psycho‐econometric understandings of resource consumption is increasingly evident. Since the early 2000s, social practice theory has been increasingly recognized as deepening understandings of the complex ways water is consumed and the dynamic factors that influence household demands. This review examines evidence of how social practice ideas are deployed in academic research in scope (theory; geographical; practices entities/performances; sites, locations, and temporality of practices; infrastructural configurations); methods (historical; talk—interviews, focus groups; diaries; ethnography and home tours; surveys; living labs, experiments, design methods; mixed methods); and implications (co‐production; materiality; diversity; disruption and insecurity; inequalities) including for policy and practice. Emerging from the review is a set of ideas that demonstrate how to apply insights from social practice more effectively in water studies and in water management, aiding the exploration of new areas of enquiry, policies and mechanisms to enable less intensive patterns of water use. This review points to a need for increased collaboration across the water sector and wider stakeholders to enact deep and meaningful change to how water is supplied and consumed in society. Objective. The aim of this study was to examine the characteristics of scientific production related to the use of filtered water in the field of dentistry. Material and Methods. A quantitative and descriptive observational study was carried out with a scientometric approach. Data were collected from the Web of Science (WOS) database during the period January 1991 to December 2023. A search strategy incorporating a combination of MeSH terms, including terms and thesauri related to "filtered water" and "dentistry", was used. R Studio version 4.3.2 and CiteSpace 6.2.R7 were used for data analysis. Results. Over the 32-year study period, 227 scholarly papers from 134 different sources were reviewed. The literature in this field has shown an annual growth rate of 10.44%. During the year 2010, a steady movement in the number of publications and authors was observed, with considerable collaborative interaction. In the year 2020, a large interaction between publications and their citations was found. The "Citation Burst" graph identified three references that have experienced the largest "burst" of citations in an evaluated period. Lotka's law described the productivity of authors, finding that most authors have published only one paper, while a smaller number of authors have published two papers. Most authors contributed a small number of articles, while a few authors contributed a large amount of the existing literature. Conclusion. A comprehensive overview of the scientific production related to the use of filtered water in dentistry over a span of 32 years is provided. The results highlight the growing interdisciplinarity and international collaboration in this field. This study aimed to identify the status, determining factors, and challenges in adopting climate smart livestock production practices by farmers. Three-staged sampling techniques were used to select the research sites and 233 sample farmer household respondents. Data were collected mainly using a pre-tested structured questionnaire. Key informant interviews and focus group discussions were also conducted to complement the household survey data. Descriptive statistics and an ordered logistic regression model were applied to analyze the quantitative data. The result revealed that the most adopted practices were composting (85.41%) and manure management (70.39%) while the least adopted technologies were biogas generation (3.86%) and rotation grazing (22.32%). The adoption status of the sampled farmers was also categorized into low (19.74%), medium (67.81%), and high adopter (12.45%). The high cost of improved breed, use of manure for fuel, free grazing, lack of information and awareness were the major constraints to adopting the climate smart livestock production technologies. The result also revealed that education, grazing land, total livestock holding, and extension agent contact contributed significantly and positively to the adoption of smart livestock production technology, while the distance from the water source had an insignificant and negative effect on the adoption status of climate smart livestock production practices. Objectives We assess how age, the presence of mature adults aged 45+ years, and recent deaths in rural households are associated with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) preventative actions and the likelihood of getting vaccinated against the virus in Malawi during early stages of the pandemic. Methods We draw upon data from 2,187 rural Malawians who participated in a 2020 COVID-19 Phone Survey. We estimate the log odds of engaging in "low-cost" and "high-cost" COVID-19 preventative actions based on age, gender, household composition, and recent household deaths. Low-cost prevention efforts were washing hands with soap and water frequently, avoiding close contact with people when going out, and avoiding shaking hands. High-cost actions included staying at home and decreasing time spent close to people not living in their household. We also estimate the chances of acquiring the COVID-19 vaccine in early stages of its availability. Results Mature women (45+ years) in general and younger men (<45 years)—living with at least one mature adult in the household—were less likely than others to comply with low-cost actions. Mature men were more likely than younger men (<45 years) to take on high-cost actions. To some extent, individuals who experienced a recent family death were more likely to engage in high-cost COVID-19 preventative actions as well as getting vaccinated. Discussion Gendered age differences in preventing the transmission of COVID-19 offer hints of larger social norms affecting protective efforts. Based on a desk review and three rounds of the Delphi method, this study examines the impacts of climate change-induced water-related threats on food security in the Indian Sundarbans, and develops management strategies to address the issues. Results show climate change, through its impacts on water, has lowered agricultural output, endangered traditional livelihoods, reduced access to food, and affected food utilization by impacting freshwater availability and creating health hazards. In addition, intensified weather extremes are likely to threaten food security further. A combination of local-level adaptation measures and global-level mitigation initiatives is necessary to ensure food security in this region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Groundwater is the single largest source of water for irrigation and domestic use in India. Climate change further exacerbates the threat of depletion, reducing food security and increasing the vulnerabilities of resource users. Governance is complicated by externalities associated with its attributes as an invisible and fluid resource which create problems of rivalry and exclusion. Based on theory-based case studies for evaluation of selected World Bank projects, we analyse challenges for groundwater governance and identify factors that contribute to depletion. The current study presents a comprehensive investigation into the synthesis and characterization of a composite material, Fe/N-CX, designed for the removal of methylene blue dye from aqueous solutions. The synthesis process involves co-precipitating iron salts into a carbon dispersion, resulting in the creation of a carbon xerogel infused with magnetic iron particles. Melamine serves as the nitrogen source for the carbon xerogel, integrated into the polymer matrix via the sol–gel method. This amalgamation of carbon xerogel and magnetic iron particles renders the Fe/N-CX composite a highly promising adsorbent for dye removal. Various characterization techniques, including powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), potentiometric titration, and N2 sorption isotherms, extensively probe the structural, chemical, and surface properties of the Fe/N-CX composite. These methods offer critical insights into its potential adsorption capabilities. Assessment of Fe/N-CX as a methylene blue dye adsorbent reveals an optimal pH of 11, indicating its highest adsorption capacity under slightly alkaline conditions. The maximum adsorption capacity, determined by the Langmuir model, reaches Qmax = 698 mg g−1. Furthermore, the adsorption kinetics data align well with the pseudo-second-order model. The prepared Fe/N-CX exhibits typical ferromagnetic properties, facilitating easy separation from the solution and allowing for multiple cycles of reuse. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
