We study long-term evolution of the matter ejected in a black-hole neutron-star (BH-NS) merger employing the results of a long-term numerical-relativity simulation and nucleosynthesis calculation, in which both dynamical and post-merger ejecta formation are consistently followed. In particular, we employ the results for the merger of a $1.35\,M_\odot$ NS and a $5.4\,M_\odot$ BH with the dimensionless spin of 0.75. We confirm the finding in the previous studies that thermal pressure induced by radioactive heating in the ejecta significantly modifies the morphology of the ejecta. We then compute the kilonova (KN) light curves employing the ejecta profile obtained by the long-term evolution. We find that our present BH-NS model results in a KN light curve that is fainter yet more enduring than that observed in AT2017gfo. This is due to the fact that the emission is primarily powered by the lanthanide-rich dynamical ejecta, in which a long photon diffusion time scale is realized by the large mass and high opacity. While the peak brightness of the KN emission in both the optical and near-infrared bands is fainter than or comparable to those of binary NS models, the time-scale maintaining the peak brightness is much longer in the near-infrared band for the BH-NS KN model. Our result indicates that a BH-NS merger with massive ejecta can observationally be identified by the bright and long lasting ($>$two weeks) near-infrared emission., Comment: 20 pages, 12 figures, submitted to MNRAS

Kilonova spectra provide us with information of r-process nucleosynthesis in neutron star mergers. However, it is still challenging to identify individual elements in the spectra mainly due to lack of experimentally accurate atomic data for heavy elements in the near-infrared wavelengths. Recently, Domoto et al. (2022) proposed the absorption features around 14500 A in the observed spectra of GW170817/AT2017gfo as Ce III lines. But they used theoretical transition probabilities (gf-values) whose accuracy is uncertain. In this paper, we derive the astrophysical gf-values of the three Ce III lines, aiming at verification of this identification. We model high resolution H-band spectra of four F-type supergiants showing the clear Ce III absorption features by assuming stellar parameters derived from optical spectra in literatures. We also test the validity of the derived astrophysical gf-values by estimating Ce III abundances in Ap stars. We find that the derived astrophysical gf-values of the Ce III lines are systematically lower by about 0.25 dex than those used in previous work of kilonovae, while they are still compatible within the uncertainty range. By performing radiative transfer simulations of kilonovae with the derived gf-values, we find that the identification of Ce III as a source of the absorption features in the observed kilonova spectra still stands, even considering the uncertainties in the astrophysical gf-values. The electromagnetic transient following a binary neutron star merger is known as a kilonova (KN). Owing to rapid expansion velocities and small ejecta masses, KNe rapidly transition into the Non-Local Thermodynamic Equilibrium (NLTE) regime. In this study, we present synthetic NLTE spectra of KNe from 5 to 20 days after merger using the \texttt{SUMO} spectral synthesis code. We study three homogeneous composition, 1D multi-zone models with characteristic electron fractions of $Y_e \sim 0.35, 0.25$ and $0.15$. We find that emission features in the spectra tend to emerge in windows of reduced line blocking, as the ejecta are still only partially transparent even at 20 days. For the $Y_e \sim 0.35$ (lanthanide-free) ejecta, we find that the neutral and singly ionised species of Rb, Sr, Y and Zr dominate the spectra, all with good potential for identification. We directly test and confirm an impact of Sr on the 10000 angstrom spectral region in lanthanide-free ejecta, but also see that its signatures may be complex. We suggest the Rb I $\rm{5p^{1}}$- $\rm{5s^{1}}$ 7900 angstrom transition as a candidate for the $\lambda_0 \sim$ 7500--7900 angstrom P-Cygni feature in AT2017gfo. For the $Y_e \sim 0.25$ and $0.15$ compositions, lanthanides are dominant in the spectral formation, in particular Nd, Sm, and Dy. We identify key processes in KN spectral formation, notably that scattering and fluorescence play important roles even up to 20 days after merger, implying that the KN ejecta are not yet optically thin at this time., Comment: 20 pages (30 with appendices), 17 figures, accepted to MNRAS

We study kilonova emission from binary neutron star (BNS) mergers for the case that a remnant massive neutron star (MNS) forms and collapses to a black hole within $20$ ms after the onset of the merger (which we refer to as "a short-lived case") by consistently employing numerical-relativity and nucleosynthesis results. We find that such kilonovae are fainter and last shorter than those for BNSs resulting in the formation of long-lived ($\gg 1\,{\rm s}$) MNSs, in particular in the optical band. The resulting light curves are too faint and last for a too short duration to explain the kilonova observation for the BNS associated with GW170817, indicating that the merger remnant formed in GW170817 is unlikely to have collapsed to a black hole within a short period of time ($\sim 20$ ms) after the onset of the merger. Our present result implies that early observation is necessary to detect kilonovae associated with BNSs leading to short-lived MNS formation in particular for the optical blue band as well as that kilonovae could be hidden by the gamma-ray burst afterglow for nearly face-on observation. We provide a possible approximate scaling law for near-infrared light curves with the given reference time and magnitude when the decline power of the ${\it z}$-band magnitude, $d M_{\it z}/d{\rm log}_{10}t$, reaches $2.5$. This scaling law suggests that the ${\it HK}$-band follow-up observation should be at least $1$ mag deeper than that for the ${\it z}$-band reference magnitude and earlier than 4 times the reference time., Comment: 15 pages, 13 figures, submitted to MNRAS

Observations of the kilonova from a neutron star merger event GW170817 opened a way to directly study r-process nucleosynthesis by neutron star mergers. It is, however, challenging to identify the individual elements in the kilonova spectra due to lack of complete atomic data, in particular, at near-infrared wavelengths. In this paper, we demonstrate that spectra of chemically peculiar stars with enhanced heavy element abundances can provide us with an excellent astrophysical laboratory for kilonova spectra. We show that the photosphere of a late B-type chemically peculiar star HR 465 has similar lanthanide abundances and ionization degrees with those in the line forming region in a kilonova at $\sim 2.5$ days after the merger. The near-infrared spectrum of HR 465 taken with Subaru/IRD indicates that Ce III lines give the strongest absorption features around 16,000 A and there are no other comparably strong transitions around these lines. The Ce III lines nicely match with the broad absorption features at 14,500 A observed in GW170817 with a blueshift of v=0.1c, which supports recent identification of this feature as Ce III by Domoto et al. The innermost ejecta of core-collapse supernovae are considered to be the sources of some iron-group and heavier nuclei. The ejecta are predominantly driven by neutrino heating, principally due to neutrino capture on free neutrons and protons. Such neutrino interaction plays a crucial role for setting neutron richness in the ejecta. Recent hydrodynamics work with sophisticated neutrino transport indicates that the ejecta are only mildly neutron rich or even proton rich. In such conditions a wide variety of trans-iron isotopes are synthesized, while the neutron richness is insufficient for the production of r-process nuclei. In this capter, basic concepts of nucleosynthesis in neutrino-heated ejecta and neutrino-driven winds of core-collapse supernovae are presented along with latest studies. Neutrino-heated ejecta indicate the early ejecta component within the first few seocnds in which anisotropic convective activities of material above the neutrinosphere become important for nucleosynthesis. Then, neutrino-driven winds follow, which are approximately isotropic outflows emerging from the surface of a proto-neutron star . According to such characteristics, studies of nucleosynthesis here are based on recent multi-dimentional hydrodynamics simulations and semi-alalytic wind solutions, respectively. These studies suggest that trans-iron species up to the atomic mass number of 90, as well as some rare isotopes such as 48Ca and 92Mo, are produced in the neutrino-heated ejecta. We examine nucleosynthesis in the ejecta of black hole-neutron star mergers based on the results of self-consistent, long-term neutrino-radiation-magnetohydrodynamics simulations for the first time. We find that the combination of dynamical and post-merger ejecta reproduces a solar-like r-process pattern. Moreover, the enhancement level of actinides is highly sensitive to the distribution of both electron fraction and the velocity of the dynamical ejecta. Our result implies that the mean electron fraction of dynamical ejecta should be ~ 0.05-0.08 in order to reconcile the nucleosynthetic abundances with those in r-process-enhanced, actinide-boosted stars. We explore a possible scenario of the explosion as a result of core collapses of rotating massive stars that leave a black hole by performing a radiation-viscous-hydrodynamics simulation in numerical relativity. We take moderately and rapidly rotating compact pre-collapse stellar models derived in stellar evolution calculations as the initial conditions. We find that the viscous heating in the disk formed around the central black hole powers an outflow. For rapidly rotating models, the explosion energy is $\gtrsim 3\times10^{51}$ erg, which is comparable to or larger than that of typical stripped-envelope supernovae, indicating that a fraction of such supernovae may be explosions powered by black-hole accretion disks. The explosion energy is still increasing at the end of the simulations with a rate of $>10^{50}$ erg/s, and thus, it may reach $\sim10^{52}$ erg. The nucleosynthesis calculation shows that the mass of $^{56}$Ni amounts to $\gtrsim 0.1M_\odot$, which, together with the high explosion energy, satisfies the required amount for broad-lined type Ic supernovae. The moderately rotating models predict small ejecta mass of order $0.1M_\odot$ and explosion energy of $\lesssim 10^{51}$ erg. Due to the small ejecta mass, these models may predict a short-timescale transient with the rise time 3$-$5 d. It can lead to a bright ($\sim10^{44}$ erg/s) transient like superluminous supernovae in the presence of dense massive circum-stellar medium. Irrespective of the models, the lowest value of the electron fraction of the ejecta is $\gtrsim 0.4$, and thus, the synthesis of heavy $r$-process elements is not found in our calculation., Comment: 23 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

The observations of GW170817/AT2017gfo have provided us with evidence that binary neutron star mergers are sites of $r$-process nucleosynthesis. However, the observed signatures in the spectra of GW170817/AT2017gfo have not been fully decoded especially in the near-infrared (NIR) wavelengths. In this paper, we investigate the kilonova spectra over the entire wavelength range with the aim of elemental identification. We systematically calculate the strength of bound-bound transitions by constructing a hybrid line list that is accurate for important strong transitions and complete for weak transitions. We find that the elements on the left side of the periodic table, such as Ca, Sr, Y, Zr, Ba, La, and Ce, tend to produce prominent absorption lines in the spectra. This is because such elements have a small number of valence electrons and low-lying energy levels, resulting in strong transitions. By performing self-consistent radiative transfer simulations for the entire ejecta, we find that La III and Ce III appear in the NIR spectra, which can explain the absorption features at $\lambda\sim 12000$-14000 A in the spectra of GW170817/AT2017gfo. The mass fractions of La and Ce are estimated to be $>2\times 10^{-6}$ and $\sim$ (1-100)$\times 10^{-5}$, respectively. An actinide element Th can also be a source of absorption as the atomic structure is analogous to that of Ce. By performing general relativistic hydrodynamics simulations with an approximate neutrino-radiation transfer, the properties of ejecta in dynamical and post-merger phases are investigated for the cases in which the remnant massive neutron star collapses into a black hole in $\lesssim 20$ ms after the onset of the merger. The dynamical mass ejection is investigated in three-dimensional simulations. The post-merger mass ejection is investigated in two-dimensional axisymmetric simulations with viscosity using the three-dimensional post-merger systems as the initial conditions. We show that the typical neutron-richness of the dynamical ejecta is higher for the merger of more asymmetric binaries; hence, heavier $r$-process nuclei are dominantly synthesized. The post-merger ejecta are shown to have only a mild neutron-richness, which results in the production of lighter $r$-process nuclei, irrespective of binary mass ratios. Because of the larger disk mass, the post-merger ejecta mass is larger for more asymmetric binary mergers. Thus, the post-merger ejecta can compensate for the underproduced lighter $r$-process nuclei for asymmetric merger cases. As a result, by summing up both ejecta components, the solar residual $r$-process pattern is reproduced within the average deviation of a factor of three, irrespective of the binary mass ratio. Our result also indicates that the (about a factor of a few) light-to-heavy abundance scatter observed in $r$-process-enhanced stars can be attributed to variation in the binary mass ratio and total mass. We explore the electromagnetic counterparts that will associate with binary neutron star mergers for the case that remnant massive neutron stars survive for $\gtrsim 0.5\,$s after the merger. For this study, we employ the outflow profiles obtained by long-term general-relativistic neutrino-radiation magneto-hydrodynamics simulations with a mean field dynamo effect. We show that a synchrotron afterglow with high luminosity can be associated with the merger event if the magnetic fields of the remnant neutron stars are significantly amplified by the dynamo effect. We also perform a radiative transfer calculation for kilonovae and find that for the highly amplified magnetic field cases, the kilonovae can be bright in the early epoch, while it shows the optical emission rapid declining in a few days and the long-lasting ($\sim 10\,{\rm d}$) emission very bright in the near-infrared wavelength. All these features have not been found in GW170817, indicating that the merger remnant neutron star formed in GW170817 might have collapsed to a black hole within several hundreds ms or magnetic-field amplification might be a minor effect., Comment: 25 pages, 14 figures, published in ApJ

Recent progress of nucleosynthesis work as well as the discovery of a kilonova associated with the gravitational-wave source GW170817 indicates that neutron star mergers (NSM) can be a site of the r-process. Several studies of galactic chemical evolution, however, have pointed out inconsistencies between this idea and the observed stellar abundance signatures in the Milky Way: (a) the presence of Eu at low (halo) metallicity and (b) the descending trend of Eu/Fe at high (disc) metallicity. In this study, we explore the galactic chemical evolution of the Milky Way's halo, disc and satellite dwarf galaxies. Particular attention is payed to the forms of delay-time distributions for both type Ia supernovae (SN Ia) and NSMs. The Galactic halo is modeled as an ensemble of independently evolving building-block galaxies with different masses. The single building blocks as well as the disc and satellite dwarfs are treated as well-mixed one-zone systems. Our results indicate that the aforementioned inconsistencies can be resolved and thus NSMs can be the unique r-process site in the Milky Way, provided that the delay-time distributions satisfy the following conditions: (i) a long delay (~1 Gyr) for the appearance of the first SN Ia (or a slow early increase of its number) and (ii) an additional early component providing >~ 50% of all NSMs with a delay of ~0.1 Gyr. In our model, r-process-enhanced and r-process-deficient stars in the halo appear to have originated from ultra-faint dwarf-sized and massive building blocks, respectively. The gravitational wave event GW170817 with a macronova/kilonova shows that a merger of two neutron stars ejects matter with radioactivity including $r$-process nucleosynthesis. A part of the ejecta inevitably falls back to the central object, possibly powering long-lasting activities of a short gamma-ray burst (sGRB), such as extended and plateau emissions. We investigate the fallback accretion with the $r$-process heating by performing one-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations and developing a semi-analytical model. We show that the usual fallback rate $dM/dt \propto t^{-5/3}$ is halted by the heating because pressure gradients accelerate ejecta beyond an escape velocity. The suppression is steeper than Chevalier's power-law model through Bondi accretion within a turn-around radius. The characteristic halting timescale is $\sim 10^5$--$10^9$ sec for the GW170817-like $r$-process heating, which is long enough to continue the long-lasting emission of sGRBs. The halting timescale is sensitive to the uncertainty of the $r$-process. Future observation of fallback halting could constrain the $r$-process heating on the year scale., Comment: 22 pages, 15 figures

Binary neutron star (NS) mergers have been expected to synthesize r-process elements and emit radioactively powered radiation, called kilonova. Although r-process nucleosynthesis was confirmed by the observations of GW170817/AT2017gfo, no trace of individual elements has been identified except for strontium. In this paper, we perform systematic calculations of line strength for bound-bound transitions and radiative transfer simulations in NS merger ejecta toward element identification in kilonova spectra. We find that Sr II triplet lines appear in the spectrum of a lanthanide-poor model, which is consistent with the absorption feature observed in GW170817/AT2017gfo. The synthetic spectrum also shows the strong Ca II triplet lines. This is natural because Ca and Sr are co-produced in the material with relatively high electron fraction and their ions have similar atomic structures with only one s-electron in the outermost shell. The line strength, however, highly depends on the abundance distribution and temperature in the ejecta. For our lanthanide-rich model, the spectra show the features of doubly ionized heavy elements, such as Ce, Tb and Th. Our results suggest that the line forming region of GW170817/AT2017gfo was lanthanide-poor. We show that the Sr II and Ca II lines can be used as a probe of physical conditions in NS merger ejecta. Absence of the Ca II line features in GW170817/AT2017gfo implies that the Ca/Sr ratio is < 0.002 in mass fraction, which is consistent with nucleosynthesis for electron fraction >= 0.40 and entropy per nucleon (in units of Boltzmann constant) >= 25., Comment: 16 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We study the long-term evolution of ejecta formed in a binary neutron star (BNS) merger that results in a long-lived remnant NS by performing a hydrodynamics simulation with the outflow data of a numerical relativity simulation as the initial condition. At the homologously expanding phase, the total ejecta mass reaches $\approx0.1\,M_\odot$ with an average velocity of $\approx0.1\,c$ and lanthanide fraction of $\approx 0.005$. We further perform the radiative transfer simulation employing the obtained ejecta profile. We find that, contrary to a naive expectation from the large ejecta mass and low lanthanide fraction, the optical emission is not as bright as that in GW170817/AT2017gfo, while the infrared emission can be brighter. This light curve property is attributed to preferential diffusion of photons toward the equatorial direction due to the prolate ejecta morphology, large opacity contribution of Zr, Y, and lanthanides, and low specific heating rate of the ejecta. Our results suggest that these light curve features could be used as an indicator for the presence of a long-lived remnant NS. We also found that the bright optical emission broadly consistent with GW170817/AT2017gfo is realized for the case that the high-velocity ejecta components in the polar region are suppressed. These results suggest that the remnant in GW170817/AT2017gfo is unlikely to be a long-lived NS, but might have collapsed to a black hole within ${\cal O}(0.1)$ s., Comment: 32 pages, 24 figures, published in ApJ

Long-term viscous neutrino-radiation hydrodynamics simulations in full general relativity are performed for a massive disk surrounding spinning stellar-mass black holes with mass $M_{\rm BH}=4$, $6$, and $10M_\odot$ and initial dimensionless spin $\chi \approx 0.8$. The initial disk is chosen to have mass $M_{\rm disk}\approx 0.1$ or $3M_\odot$ as plausible models of the remnants for the merger of black hole-neutron star binaries or the stellar core collapse from a rapidly rotating progenitor, respectively. For $M_{\rm disk} \approx 0.1M_\odot$ with the outer disk edge initially located at $r_{\rm out} \sim 200$ km, we find that $15$%-$20$% of $M_{\rm disk}$ is ejected and the average electron fraction of the ejecta is $\langle Y_e \rangle = 0.30$-$0.35$ as found in the previous study. For $M_{\rm disk} \approx 3M_\odot$, we find that $\approx 10$%-$20$% of $M_{\rm disk}$ is ejected for $r_{\rm out}\approx 200$-$1000$ km. In addition, $\langle Y_e \rangle$ of the ejecta can be enhanced to be $\gtrsim 0.4$ because the electron fraction is increased significantly during the long-term viscous expansion of the disk with high neutrino luminosity until the mass ejection sets in. Our results suggest that not heavy $r$-process elements but light trans-iron elements would be synthesized in the matter ejected from a massive torus surrounding stellar-mass black holes. We also find that the outcomes of the viscous evolution for the high-mass disk case is composed of a rapidly spinning black hole surrounded by a torus with a narrow funnel, which appears to be suitable for generating gamma-ray bursts., Comment: 25 pages, 17 figures

We study the post-merger mass ejection of low-mass binary neutron stars (NSs) with the system mass of $2.5\, M_\odot$, and subsequent nucleosynthesis by performing general-relativistic, neutrino-radiation viscous-hydrodynamics simulations in axial symmetry. We find that the merger remnants are long-lived massive NSs surviving more than several seconds, irrespective of the nuclear equations of state (EOSs) adopted. The ejecta masses of our fiducial models are $\sim 0.06$-$0.1\, M_\odot$ (depending on the EOS), being $\sim 30\%$ of the initial disk masses ($\sim 0.15$-$0.3\, M_\odot$). Post-processing nucleosynthesis calculations indicate that the ejecta is composed mainly of light $r$-process nuclei with small amounts of lanthanides (mass fraction $\sim 0.002$-$0.004$) and heavier species due to the modest average electron fraction ($\sim 0.32$-$0.34$) for a reasonable value of the viscous coefficient. Such abundance distributions are incompatible with the solar $r$-process-like abundance patterns found in all measured $r$-process-enhanced metal-poor stars. Therefore, low-mass binary NS mergers should be rare. If such low-mass NS mergers occur, their electromagnetic counterparts, kilonovae, will be characterized by an early bright blue emission because of the large ejecta mass as well as the small lanthanide fraction. We also show, however, that if the effective turbulent viscosity is very high, or there is an efficient mass ejection working in the early post-merger phase, the electron fraction of the ejecta could be low enough that the solar $r$-process-like abundance pattern is reproduced and the lanthanide fraction becomes so high that the kilonova would be characterized by early bright blue and late bright red emissions., Comment: 35 pages, 20 figures, 4 tables. New viscous neutrino-radiation hydrodynamics simulations are performed for accretion disks surrounding a spinning black hole with low mass $3M_\odot$ and dimensionless spin 0.8 or 0.6 in full general relativity, aiming at modeling the evolution of a merger remnant of massive binary neutron stars or low-mass black hole-neutron star binaries. We reconfirm the following results found by previous studies of other groups: 15-30% of the disk mass is ejected from the system with the average velocity of $\sim $5-10% of the speed of light for the plausible profile of the disk as merger remnants. In addition, we find that for the not extremely high viscous coefficient case, the neutron richness of the ejecta does not become very high, because weak interaction processes enhance the electron fraction during the viscous expansion of the disk before the onset of the mass ejection, resulting in the suppression of the lanthanide synthesis. For high-mass disks, the viscous expansion timescale is increased by a longer-term neutrino emission, and hence, the electron fraction of the ejecta becomes even higher. We also confirm that the mass distribution of the electron fraction depends strongly on the magnitude of the given viscous coefficient. This demonstrates that a first-principle magnetohydrodynamics simulation is necessary for black hole-disk systems with sufficient grid resolution and with sufficiently long timescale (longer than seconds) to clarify the nucleosynthesis and electromagnetic signals from them., Comment: 26 pages, 15 figures, to be submitted to PRD

The kilonova associated with the neutron star merger GW170817 provides us with several hints to elucidate the nature of the r-process in the universe. In this article, we inspect the radioactive isotopes that powered the kilonova emission, provided that the merger ejecta consisted of material with a solar r-like abundance pattern. It is suggested that the early (1-10 days after merger) kilonova emission is mainly due to the beta-decay chain 66Ni -> 66Cu -> 66Zn, which can be the source of the steepening of the light curve at about 7 days. The late time (> 10 days) heaing is attributed to the alpha-decay and fission (254Cf) of trans-Pb species (in addition to beta-decay), which can be the signature of r-processing beyond the heaviest stable elements. Light trans-iron elements such as Sr serve as the key to understanding the astrophysical sites of heavy elements. Spectroscopic studies of metal-poor stars have revealed large star-to-star scatters in the ratios of [Sr/Ba], which indicates that there are multiple sites for the production of Sr. Here we present the enrichment history of Sr by a series of the $N$-body/smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulations of a dwarf galaxy with a stellar mass of 3 $\times$ 10$^{6}$ $M_{\odot}$. We show that binary neutron star mergers (NSMs) and asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars contribute to the enrichment of Sr in the metallicity ranges [Fe/H] $\gtrsim$ $-$3 and [Fe/H] $\gtrsim$ $-$1, respectively. It appears insufficient, however, to explain the overall observational trends of Sr by considering only these sites. We find that the models including electron-capture supernovae (ECSNe) and rotating massive stars (RMSs), in addition to NSMs and AGBs, reasonably reproduce the enrichment histories of Sr in dwarf galaxies. The contributions of both ECSNe and NSMs make scatters of $\approx$ 0.2 dex in [Sr/Fe], [Sr/Ba], and [Sr/Zn] as can be seen for observed stars in the metallicity range [Fe/H] $<$ $-2$. We also find that the mass range of ECSN progenitors should be substantially smaller than $1\, M_\odot$ (e.g., 0.1-$0.2\, M_\odot$) to avoid over-prediction of [Sr/Ba] and [Sr/Zn] ratios. Our results demonstrate that NSMs, AGBs, ECSNe, and RMSs all play roles in the enrichment histories of Local Group dwarf galaxies, although more observational data are required to disentangle the relative contributions of these sources., Comment: 19 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

Radioactive energies from unstable nuclei made in the ejecta of neutron star mergers play principal roles in powering kilonovae. In previous studies power-law-type heating rates (e.g., ~ t^-1.3) have frequently been used, which may be inadequate if the ejecta are dominated by nuclei other than the A ~ 130 region. We consider, therefore, two reference abundance distributions that match the r-process residuals to the solar abundances for A >= 69 (light trans-iron plus r-process elements) and A >= 90 (r-process elements). Nucleosynthetic abundances are obtained by using free-expansion models with three parameters: expansion velocity, entropy, and electron fraction. Radioactive energies are calculated as an ensemble of weighted free-expansion models that reproduce the reference abundance patterns. The results are compared with the bolometric luminosity (> a few days since merger) of the kilonova associated with GW170817. We find that the former case (fitted for A >= 69) with an ejecta mass 0.06 M_sun reproduces the light curve remarkably well including its steepening at > 7 days, in which the mass of r-process elements is ~ 0.01 M_sun. Two beta-decay chains are identified: 66Ni -> 66Cu -> 66Zn and 72Zn -> 72Ga -> 72Ge with similar halflives of parent isotopes (~ 2 days), which leads to an exponential-like evolution of heating rates during 1-15 days. The light curve at late times (> 40 days) is consistent with additional contributions from the spontaneous fission of 254Cf and a few Fm isotopes. If this is the case, the event GW170817 is best explained by the production of both light trans-iron and r-process elements that originate from dynamical ejecta and subsequent disk outflows from the neutron star merger., Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Mergers of compact binaries (of a neutron star and another neutron star or a black hole, NSMs) are suggested to be the promising astrophysical site of the r-process. While the average coalescence timescale of NSMs appears to be > 100 Myr, most of previous chemical evolution models indicate that the observed early appearance and large dispersion of [r/Fe] in Galactic halo stars at [Fe/H] < -2.5 favors shorter coalescence times of 1-10 Myr. We argue that this is not the case for the models assuming the formation of the Galactic halo from clustering of subhalos with different star formation histories as suggested by Ishimaru et al. (2015). We present a stochastic chemical evolution model of the subhalos, in which the site of the r-process is assumed to be mainly NSMs with a coalescence timescale of 100 Myr. In view of the scarcity of NSMs, their occurrence in each subhalo is computed with a Monte Carlo method. Our results show that the less massive subhalos evolve at lower metallicities and generate highly r-process-enhanced stars. An assembly of these subhalos leaves behind the large star-to-star scatters of [r/Fe] in the Galactic halo as observed. However, the observed scatters of [Sr/Ba] at low metallicities indicate the presence of an additional site that partially contributes to the enrichment of light neutron-capture elements such as Sr. The high enhancements of [r/Fe] at low metallicities found in our low-mass subhalo models also qualitatively reproduce the abundance signatures of the stars in the recently discovered ultra-faint dwarf galaxy Reticulum II. The heaviest iron-peak element, Zn has been used as an important tracer of cosmic chemical evolution. Spectroscopic observations of the metal-poor stars in Local Group galaxies show that an increasing trend of [Zn/Fe] ratios toward lower metallicity. However, enrichment of Zn in galaxies is not well understood due to the poor knowledge of astrophysical sites of Zn as well as metal mixing in galaxies. Here we show possible explanations for the observed trend by taking into account electron-capture supernovae (ECSNe) as one of the sources of Zn in our chemodynamical simulations of dwarf galaxies. We find that the ejecta from ECSNe contribute to stars with [Zn/Fe] $\gtrsim$ 0.5. We also find that scatters of [Zn/Fe] in higher metallicity originate from the ejecta of type Ia supernovae. On the other hand, it appears difficult to explain the observed trends if we do not consider ECSNe as a source of Zn. These results come from inhomogeneous spatial metallicity distribution due to the inefficiency of metal mixing. We find that the optimal value of scaling factor for metal diffusion coefficient is $\sim$ 0.01 in the shear-based metal mixing model in smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulations. Ejected material from neutron star mergers give rise to electromagnetic emission powered by radioactive decays of r-process nuclei, which is so called kilonova or macronova. While properties of the emission are largely affected by opacities in the ejected material, available atomic data for r-process elements are still limited. We perform atomic structure calculations for r-process elements: Se (Z=34), Ru (Z=44), Te (Z=52), Ba (Z=56), Nd (Z=60), and Er (Z=68). We confirm that the opacities from bound-bound transitions of open f-shell, Lanthanide elements (Nd and Er) are higher than those of the other elements over a wide wavelength range. The opacities of open s-shell (Ba), p-shell (Se and Te), and d-shell (Ru) elements are lower than those of open f-shell elements and their transitions are concentrated in the ultraviolet wavelengths. We show that the optical brightness can be different by >2 mag depending on the element abundances in the ejecta such that post-merger, Lanthanide-free ejecta produce brighter and bluer optical emission. Such blue emission from post-merger ejecta can be observed from the polar directions if the mass of the preceding dynamical ejecta in these regions is small. For the ejecta mass of 0.01 Msun, observed magnitudes of the blue emission will reach 21.0 mag (100 Mpc) and 22.5 mag (200 Mpc) in g and r bands within a few days after the merger, which are detectable with 1m or 2m-class telescopes., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures, submitted to ApJ

We determine the abundances of neutron-capture elements from Sr to Eu for five very-metal-poor stars (-3<[Fe/H]<-2) in the Milky Way halo to reveal the origin of light neutron-capture elements. Previous spectroscopic studies have shown evidence of at least two components in the r-process; one referred to as the "main r-process" and the other as the "weak r-process," which is mainly responsible for producing heavy and light neutron-capture elements, respectively. Observational studies of metal-poor stars suggest that there is a universal pattern in the main r-process, similar to the abundance pattern of the r-process component of solar-system material. Still, it is uncertain whether the abundance pattern of the weak r-process shows universality or diversity, due to the sparseness of measured light neutron-capture elements. We have detected the key elements, Mo, Ru, and Pd, in five target stars to give an answer to this question. The abundance patterns of light neutron-capture elements from Sr to Pd suggest a diversity in the weak r-process. In particular, scatter in the abundance ratio between Ru and Pd is significant when the abundance patterns are normalized at Zr. Our results are compared with the elemental abundances predicted by nucleosynthesis models of supernovae with parameters such as electron fraction or proto-neutron-star mass, to investigate sources of such diversity in the abundance patterns of light neutron-capture elements. We examine the nucleosynthesis in the innermost, neutrino-processed ejecta (a few $10^{-3}\,M_\odot$) of self-consistent, two-dimensional explosion models of core-collapse supernovae for six progenitor stars with different initial masses. Three models have initial masses near the low-mass end of the supernova range, $8.8\,M_\odot$ (e8.8; electron-capture supernova), $9.6\,M_\odot$ (z9.6), and $8.1\,M_\odot$ (u8.1), with initial metallicities of 1, 0, and $10^{-4}$ times the solar metallicity, respectively. The other three are solar-metallicity models with initial masses of $11.2\,M_\odot$ (s11), $15\,M_\odot$ (s15), and $27\,M_\odot$ (s27). The low-mass models e8.8, z9.6, and u8.1 exhibit high production factors (nucleosynthetic abundances relative to the solar ones) of 100--200 for light trans-iron elements from Zn to Zr. This is associated with appreciable ejection of neutron-rich matter in these models. Remarkably, the nucleosynthetic outcomes for progenitors e8.8 and z9.6 are almost identical, including interesting productions of $^{48}$Ca and $^{60}$Fe, irrespective of their quite different (O-Ne-Mg and Fe) cores prior to collapse. In the more massive models s11, s15, and s27, several proton-rich isotopes of light trans-iron elements, including the $p$-isotope $^{92}$Mo (for s27) are made, up to production factors of $\sim$30. Both electron-capture and core-collapse supernovae near the low-mass end can therefore be dominant contributors to the Galactic inventory of light trans-iron elements from Zn to Zr and probably $^{48}$Ca and live $^{60}$Fe. The innermost ejecta of more massive supernovae may have only sub-dominant contributions to the chemical enrichment of the Galaxy except for $^{92}$Mo., Comment: 25 pages, 15 figures, accepted by ApJ

The radioactive decay of the freshly synthesized $r$-process nuclei ejected in compact binary mergers power optical/infrared macronovae (kilonovae) that follow these events. The light curves depend critically on the energy partition among the different products of the radioactive decay and this plays an important role in estimates of the amount of ejected $r$-process elements from a given observed signal. We study the energy partition and $\gamma$-ray emission of the radioactive decay. We show that $20$-$50\%$ of the total radioactive energy is released in $\gamma$-rays on timescales from hours to a month. The number of emitted $\gamma$-rays per unit energy interval has roughly a flat spectrum between a few dozen keV and $1$ MeV so that most of this energy is carried by $\sim 1$ MeV $\gamma$-rays. However at the peak of macronova emission the optical depth of the $\gamma$-rays is $\sim 0.02$ and most of the $\gamma$-rays escape. The loss of these $\gamma$-rays reduces the heat deposition into the ejecta and hence reduces the expected macronova signals if those are lanthanides dominated. This implies that the ejected mass is larger by a factor of $2$-$3$ than what was previously estimated. Spontaneous fission heats up the ejecta and the heating rate can increase if a sufficient amount of transuranic nuclei are synthesized. Direct measurements of these escaping $\gamma$-rays may provide the ultimate proof for the macronova mechanisms and an identification of the $r$-process nucleosynthesis sites. However, the chances to detect these signals are slim with current X-ray and $\gamma$-ray missions. New detectors, more sensitive by at least a factor of ten, are needed for a realistic detection rate., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, submitted to MNRAS

Binary mergers (NSMs) of double neutron star (and black hole-neutron star) systems are suggested to be major sites of r-process elements in the Galaxy by recent hydrodynamical and nucleosynthesis studies. It has been pointed out, however, that the estimated long lifetimes of neutron star binaries are in conflict with the presence of r-process-enhanced halo stars at metallicities as low as [Fe/H] ~ -3. To resolve this problem, we examine the role of NSMs in the early Galactic chemical evolution on the assumption that the Galactic halo was formed from merging sub-halos. We present simple models for the chemical evolution of sub-halos with total final stellar masses between 10^4 M_solar and 2 x 10^8 M_solar. Typical lifetimes of compact binaries are assumed to be 100 Myr (for 95% of their population) and 1 Myr (for 5%), according to recent binary population synthesis studies. The resulting metallcities of sub-halos and their ensemble are consistent with the observed mass-metallicity relation of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, and the metallicity distribution of the Galactic halo, respectively. We find that the r-process abundance ratios [r/Fe] start increasing at [Fe/H] <= -3 if the star formation efficiencies are smaller for less massive sub-halos. In addition, the sub-solar [r/Fe] values (observed as [Ba/Fe] ~ -1.5 for [Fe/H] < -3) are explained by the contribution from the short-lived (~1 Myr) binaries. Neutrino oscillations, especially to light sterile states, can affect the nucleosynthesis yields because of their possible feedback effect on the electron fraction (Ye). For the first time, we perform nucleosynthesis calculations for neutrino-driven wind trajectories from the neutrino-cooling phase of an 8.8 Msun electron-capture supernova, whose hydrodynamic evolution was computed in spherical symmetry with sophisticated neutrino transport and whose Ye evolution was post-processed by including neutrino oscillations both between active and active-sterile flavors. We also take into account the alpha-effect as well as weak magnetism and recoil corrections in the neutrino absorption and emission processes. We observe effects on the Ye evolution which depend in a subtle way on the relative radial positions of the sterile MSW resonances, of collective flavor transformations, and on the formation of alpha particles. For the adopted supernova progenitor, we find that neutrino oscillations, also to a sterile state with eV-mass, do not significantly affect the element formation and in particular cannot make the post-explosion wind outflow neutron rich enough to activate a strong r-process. Our conclusions become even more robust when, in order to mimic equation-of-state dependent corrections due to nucleon potential effects in the dense-medium neutrino opacities, six cases with reduced Ye in the wind are considered. In these cases, despite the conversion of active neutrinos to sterile neutrinos, Ye increases or is not significantly lowered compared to the values obtained without oscillations and active flavor transformations. Recent studies suggest that binary neutron star (NS-NS) mergers robustly produce the heavy r-process nuclei above the atomic mass number A ~ 130 because of their ejecta consisting of almost pure neutrons (electron fraction of Y_e < 0.1). However, little production of the lighter r-process nuclei (A = 90-120) conflicts with the spectroscopic results of r-process-enhanced Galactic halo stars. We present, for the first time, the result of nucleosynthesis calculations based on the fully general-relativistic simulation of a NS-NS merger with approximate neutrino transport. It is found that the bulk of the dynamical ejecta are appreciably shock-heated and neutrino-processed, resulting in a wide range of Y_e (= 0.09-0.45). The mass-averaged abundance distribution of calculated nucleosynthesis yields is in reasonable agreement with the full-mass range (A = 90-240) of the solar r-process curve. This implies, if our model is representative of such events, that the dynamical ejecta of NS-NS mergers can be the origin of the Galactic r-process nuclei. Our result also shows that the radioactive heating after ~ 1 day from the merging, giving rise to r-process-powered transient emission, is dominated by the beta-decays of several species close to stability with precisely measured half-lives. This implies that the total radioactive heating rate for such an event can be well constrained within about a factor of two if the ejected material has a solar-like r-process pattern., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in ApJL. Detection of electromagnetic counterparts of gravitational wave (GW) sources is important to unveil the nature of compact binary coalescences. We perform three-dimensional, time-dependent, multi-frequency radiative transfer simulations for radioactively powered emission from the ejecta of black hole (BH) - neutron star (NS) mergers. Depending on the BH to NS mass ratio, spin of the BH, and equations of state of dense matter, BH-NS mergers can eject more material than NS-NS mergers. In such cases, radioactively powered emission from the BH-NS merger ejecta can be more luminous than that from NS-NS mergers. We show that, in spite of the expected larger distances to BH-NS merger events, observed brightness of BH-NS mergers can be comparable to or even higher than that of NS-NS mergers. We find that, when the tidally disrupted BH-NS merger ejecta are confined to a small solid angle, the emission from BH-NS merger ejecta tends to be bluer than that from NS-NS merger ejecta for a given total luminosity. Thanks to this property, we might be able to distinguish BH-NS merger events from NS-NS merger events by multi-band observations of the radioactively powered emission. An electromagnetic transient powered by the radioactive decay of r-process elements, a so-called kilonova/macronova, is one of the possible observable consequences of compact binary mergers including at east one neutron star. Recent observations strongly suggest the first discovery of the electromagnetic transient, which is associated with the short GRB 130603B. We explore a possible progenitor of this event combining the numerical-relativity simulations and radiative transfer simulations of the dynamical ejecta of binary neutron star and black hole - neutron star mergers. We show that the ejecta models within a realistic parameter range consistently reproduce the observed near-infrared excess. We also show that the soft equation of state models for binary neutron star mergers and the stiff equation of state models for black hole - neutron star mergers are favored to reproduce the observed luminosity., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, submitted to ApJL

We investigate the nucleosynthesis of the radionuclide 60Fe in electron-capture supernovae (ECSNe). The nucleosynthetic results are based on a self-consistent, two-dimensional simulation of an ECSN as well as models in which the densities are systematically increased by some factors (low-entropy models). 60Fe is found to be appreciably made in neutron-rich ejecta during the nuclear quasi-equilibrium phase with greater amounts being produced in the lower-entropy models. Our results, combining them with the yields of core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe) in the literature, suggest that ECSNe account for at least 4-30% of live 60Fe in the Milky Way. ECSNe co-produce neutron-rich isotopes, 48Ca, 50Ti, 54Cr, some light trans-iron elements, and possibly weak r-process elements including some radionuclides such as 93Zr, 99Tc, and 107Pd, whose association with 60Fe might have been imprinted in primitive meteorites or in the deep ocean crust on the Earth., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in ApJL

We examine the r-process in the neutrino-driven proto-neutron-star (PNS) wind of core-collapse supernovae in light of the recent findings of massive neutron stars in binaries as well as of an indication of neutron-richness in the PNS ejecta because of the nucleon potential corrections on neutrino opacities. To this end, a spherically symmetric, general relativistic, steady-state wind model is applied for a wide range of PNS masses between 1.2 M_sun and 2.4 M_sun with the latter reaching the causality limit. Nucleosynthesis calculations with these PNS models are performed by assuming a time evolution of electron fraction with its minimal value of Y_e = 0.4, which mimics recent hydrodynamical results. The fundamental nucleosynthetic aspect of the PNS wind is found to be the production of Sr, Y and Zr in quasi-equilibrium and of the elements with A = 90-110 by a weak r-process, which can be an explanation for the abundance signatures in r-process-poor Galactic halo stars. PNSs more massive than 2.0 M_sun can eject heavy r-process elements, however, with substantially smaller amount than what is needed to account for the solar content. PNS winds can be thus the major origin of light trans-iron elements but no more than 10% of those heavier than A ~ 110, although they may be the sources of the low-level abundances of Sr and Ba found in numerous metal-poor stars if the maximum mass of PNS exceeds 2.0 M_sun., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in ApJL

We report that electron-capture supernovae (ECSNe), arising from collapsing oxygen-neon-magnesium cores, are a possible source of 48Ca, whose origin has remained a long-standing puzzle. Our two-dimensional, self-consistent explosion model of an ECSN predicts ejection of neutron-rich matter with electron fractions Ye = 0.40-0.42 and relatively low entropies, s = 13-15 kB per nucleon (kB is the Boltzmann constant). Post-processing nucleosynthesis calculations result in appreciable production of 48Ca in such neutron-rich and low-entropy matter during the quasi-nuclear equilibrium and subsequent freezeout phases. The amount of ejected 48Ca can account for that in the solar inventory when we consider possible uncertainties in the entropies or ejecta-mass distribution. ECSNe could thus be a site of 48Ca production in addition to a hypothetical, rare class of high-density Type Ia supernovae., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in ApJL

The rapid neutron-capture process, creating about half of the heaviest elements in the Solar System was believed to be unique. Many recent studies have shown that this does not include the formation of lighter elements (in particular 38 < Z < 48). Among those, palladium (Pd) and especially silver (Ag) are expected to be key indicators of a possible second r-process, but until recently they have been studied only in a few stars. Therefore we target Pd and Ag in a large sample of stars and compare these abundances to those of Sr, Y, Zr, Ba and Eu produced by the slow (s-) and rapid (r-) neutron-capture processes. Hereby we investigate the nature of the formation process of Ag and Pd. Through a homogeneous 1D LTE analysis of 71 stars we derive stellar abundances using the spectrum synthesis code MOOG, and MARCS model atmospheres. We calculate abundance ratio trends and compare the derived abundances to site-dependent yield predictions (low mass O-Ne-Mg cc SN, and parametrised high entropy winds), to extract characteristics of the second r-process. The abundance ratios of the heavy elements yield correlations and anti-correlations. These trends lead to clear indications of the existence of a second/weak r-process, responsible for the formation of Pd and Ag. By comparing to the model predictions, we find that the conditions under which this process takes place differ from the main r-process in needing lower neutron number densities, neutron-to-seed ratios, entropies and/or favour higher electron abundances. Our analysis confirms that Pd and Ag form via a r-process that differs from the main r-process, the main and weak s-processes, and charged particle freeze-outs. This process is efficiently working down to [Fe/H] = -3.3 (where our sample ends). We examine r-process nucleosynthesis in the neutrino-driven wind from the thick accretion disk (or "torus") around a black hole. Such systems are expected as emnants of binary neutron star or neutron star -- black hole mergers. We consider a simplified, analytic, time-dependent evolution model of a 3M_sun central black hole surrounded by a neutrino emitting accretion torus with 90km radius, which serves as basis for computing spherically symmetric neutrino-driven wind solutions. We find that ejecta with modest entropies (~30 per nucleon in units of the Boltzmann constant) and moderate expansion timescales (~100ms) dominate in the mass outflow. The mass-integrated nucleosynthetic abundances are in good agreement with the solar system r-process abundance distribution if a minimal value of the electron fraction at the charged-particle freezeout, Ye,min~0.2, is achieved. In the case of Ye,min~0.3, the production of r-elements beyond A~130 does not reach to the third peak but could be still important for an explanation of the abundance signatures in r-process deficient stars in the early Galaxy. The total mass of the ejected r-process nuclei is estimated to be ~1x10^-3 M_sun. If our model was representative, this demands a Galactic event rate of ~2x10^-4 yr^-1 for black-hole-torus winds from merger remnants to be the dominant source of the r-process elements. Our result thus suggests that black-hole-torus winds from compact binary mergers have the potential to be a major but probably not the dominant production site of r-process elements., Comment: 15 pages, 22 figures, accepted to ApJ

We examine electron-capture supernovae (ECSNe) as sources of elements heavier than iron in the solar system and in Galactic halo stars. Nucleosynthesis calculations are performed on the basis of thermodynamic histories of mass elements from a fully self-consistent, two-dimensional (2D) hydrodynamic explosion model of an ECSN. We find that neutron-rich convective lumps with an electron fraction down to Ye,min=0.40, which are absent in the one-dimensional (1D) counterpart, allow for interesting production of elements between the iron group and N=50 nuclei (from Zn to Zr, with little Ga) in nuclear (quasi-)equilibrium. Our models yield very good agreement with the Ge, Sr, Y, and Zr abundances of r-process deficient Galactic halo stars and constrain the occurrence of ECSNe to ~4% of all stellar core-collapse events. All the current r-process scenarios relevant to core-collapse supernovae are facing severe difficulties. In particular, recent core-collapse simulations with neutrino transport show no sign of a neutron-rich wind from the proto-neutron star. In this paper, we discuss nucleosynthesis of the r-process in an alternative astrophysical site, "black hole winds", which are the neutrino-driven outflow from the accretion torus around a black hole. We examine how the uncertainties involved in supernova dynamics as well as in nuclear data inputs affect the nup-process in the neutrino-driven winds. For the supernova dynamics, we find that the wind termination by the preceding dense ejecta shell, as well as the electron fraction (Y_{e, 3}; at 3 10^9 K) play a crucial role. A wind termination within the temperature range of (1.5-3) 10^9 K greatly enhances the efficiency of the nu p-process. This implies that the early wind phase, when the innermost layer of the preceding supernova ejecta is still 200-1000 km from the center, is most relevant to the nup-process. The outflows with Y_{e, 3} = 0.52-0.60 result in the production of the p-nuclei up to A=108 with interesting amounts. Furthermore, the p-nuclei up to A=152 can be produced if Y_{e, 3} = 0.65 is achieved. For the nuclear data inputs, we test the sensitivity to the rates relevant to the breakout from the pp-chain region (A < 12), to the (n, p) rates on heavy nuclei, and to the nuclear masses along the nup-process pathway. We find that a small variation of the rates of triple-alpha and of the (n, p) reaction on 56Ni leads to a substantial change in the p-nuclei production. We also find that 96Pd (N=50) on the nup-process path plays a role as a second seed nucleus for the production of heavier p-nuclei. We review the final stages of stellar evolution, supernova properties, and chemical yields as a function of the progenitor's mass M. (1) 8 - 10 Ms stars are super-AGB stars when the O+Ne+Mg core collapses due to electron capture. These AGB-supernovae may constitute an SN 2008S-like sub-class of Type IIn supernovae. These stars produce little alpha-elements and Fe-peak elements, but are important sources of Zn and light p-nuclei. (2) 10 - 90 Ms stars undergo Fe-core collapse. Nucleosynthesis in aspherical explosions is important, as it can well reproduce the abundance patterns observed in extremely metal-poor stars. (3) 90 - 140 Ms stars undergo pulsational nuclear instabilities at various nuclear burning stages, including O and Si-burning. (4) 140 - 300 Ms stars become pair-instability supernovae, if the mass loss is small enough. Recent hydrodynamic studies of core-collapse supernovae imply that the neutrino-heated ejecta from a nascent neutron star develops to supersonic outflows. These supersonic winds are influenced by the reverse shock from the preceding supernova ejecta, forming the wind termination shock. We investigate the effects of the termination shock in neutrino-driven winds and its roll on the r-process. Supersonic outflows are calculated with a semi-analytic neutrino-driven wind model. Subsequent termination-shocked, subsonic outflows are obtained by applying the Rankine-Hugoniot relations. We find a couple of effects that can be relevant for the r-process. First is the sudden slowdown of the temperature decrease by the wind termination. Second is the entropy jump by termination-shock heating, up to several 100NAk. Nucleosynthesis calculations in the obtained winds are performed to examine these effects on the r-process. We find that 1) the slowdown of the temperature decrease plays a decisive roll to determine the r-process abundance curves. This is due to the strong dependences of the nucleosynthetic path on the temperature during the r-process freezeout phase. Our results suggest that only the termination-shocked winds with relatively small shock radii (~500km) are relevant for the bulk of the solar r-process abundances (A~100-180). The heaviest part in the solar r-process curve (A~180-200), however, can be reproduced both in shocked and unshocked winds. These results may help to constrain the mass range of supernova progenitors relevant for the r-process. We find, on the other hand, 2) negligible roles of the entropy jump on the r-process. The r-process in a low temperature environment is explored, in which the neutron emission by photodisintegration does not play a role (cold r-process). A semi-analytic neutrino-driven wind model is utilized for this purpose. The temperature in a supersonically expanding outflow can quickly drop to a few 10^8 K, where the (n, gamma)-(gamma, n) equilibrium is never achieved during the heavy r-nuclei synthesis. In addition, the neutron capture competes with the beta-decay owing to the low matter density. Despite such non-standard physical conditions for the cold r-process, a solar-like r-process abundance curve can be reproduced. The cold r-process predicts, however, the low lead production compared to that expected in the traditional r-process conditions, which can be a possible explanation for the low lead abundances found in a couple of r-process-rich Galactic halo stars., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in ApJL

We obtained a high resolution, high signal-to-noise UV-blue spectrum of the extremely metal-poor red giant HD88609 to determine the abundances of heavy elements. Nineteen neutron-capture elements are detected in the spectrum. Our analysis revealed that this object has large excesses of light neutron-capture elements while heavy neutron-capture elements are deficient. The abundance pattern shows a continuously decreasing trend, as a function of atomic number, from Sr to Yb, which is quite different from those in stars with excesses of r-process elements. Such an abundance pattern is very similar to that of HD122563 that was studied by our previous work. The results indicate that the abundance pattern found in the two stars could represent the pattern produced by the nucleosynthesis process that provided light neutron-capture elements in the very early Galaxy., Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ
