Abstract

Manufacturing Mg and Mg‐based alloys with controllable degradation rate has always been a challenge. Surface modification is one of the best ways to acquire protection against corrosion. Previously, many approaches such as phosphating (Na3PO4), fluoridation (HF), and alkalization (NaOH) treatments have been used to regulate the corrosion rate. Here, we compare the corrosion rates of 3‐surface modified Mg samples coated with hexamethylene diamine tetra methylene phosphonic (HMDTMPA). The protection of those different layers was ranked in the order: phosphate > alkaline > fluoridation treatment. The chemistry of those chemical conversion layers was discussed in the light of scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The mechanism of tailoring a protective film of HMDTMPA on phosphated Mg was discussed according to the ability of P to bridge the substrate with the coating. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Liquid phase deposition is a cost-effective and energy-efficient method for obtaining TiO2 films at low temperatures. This work demonstrates the use of a multifunctional template consisting of grafted gallic acid (GA) and hexamethylenediamine (HD) on a Ti substrate to regulate the deposition of TiO2 films. X-ray diffraction characterization shows that films deposited with the template have a more obvious anatase phase compared to direct deposition at 25 °C. The intensity of photoluminescence spectra also shows significant differences at 373.7 nm and 663.3 nm. Furthermore, electrochemical measurements indicate that TiO2 films adjusted by the template have excellent electrochemical conversion properties. This proposed method provides a new simple route for fabricating TiO2 films that are adjusted by GAHD templates, which may have good applications in the fields of semiconductor materials and biological materials. Abstract

Braided neurovascular flow diverters (FDs) have revolutionized the treatment of aneurysms. However, dual antiplatelet therapy is mandatory for patients with FDs, which increases the risk of adverse side effects like bleeding complications. Surface modification would be of critical relevance to improve the biocompatibility and therefore clinical performance of FDs. Herein, a titanium dioxide (TiO2) covalently immobilized citric acid (CA) nanohybrid coating is fabricated on nitinol (NiTi) braided FDs by liquid phase deposition and dip‐coating, to inhibit thrombosis and promote re‐endothelialization. The CA molecules are covalently bound onto the pre‐deposited TiO2 nanoparticulate coating. The coating has a unique homogenously nanostructured morphology as well as super‐hydrophilicity. Both in vitro and in vivo results verify that the coated samples inhibit platelets and fibrinogen adhesion, delay coagulation time, and concomitantly promote re‐endothelialization. Such appealing properties are ascribed to the nature of CA and TiO2 per se as well as the nanostructured morphology. The present strategy may not only provide a new avenue to surface‐modify braided neurovascular FDs but also shed light on advanced nanohybrid materials for biomedical applications among others.
