This paper explores 4 different magnetic field topologies for application to spherical inertial confinement fusion implosions: axial, mirror, cusp and closed field lines. A mirror field is found to enhance the impact of magnetization over an axial field; this is because the mirror field more closely follows the hot-spot surface. A cusp field, while simple to generate, is not found to have any benefits over the tried-and-tested axial field. Closed field lines are found to be of the greatest benefit to hot-spot performance, with the simulated design undergoing a 2x increase in ion temperature before alpha-heating is considered. The plasma properties of the simulation with closed field lines are radically different from the unmagnetized counterpart, with electron temperatures in excess of 100 keV, suggesting that a fundamental redesign of the capsule implosion is possible if this method is pursued.

Recent experiments at the National Ignition Facility (NIF) have demonstrated ignition for the first time in an inertial confinement fusion (ICF) experiment, a major milestone allowing the possibility of high energy gain through burn propagation. Use of external magnetic fields, applied primarily to reduce thermal losses, could increase hotspot temperature and ease requirements for ignition, opening up the capsule design space for high energy gain. However, this same restriction of thermal transport has the potential to inhibit burn propagation, which is vital in the attainment of high gain. In this work, radiation-magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) simulations carried out using the code Chimera are used to investigate the effect of a pre-imposed magnetic field on ignition and burn propagation. This paper studies the propagation of burn using both an idealized planar model and in fully-integrated 2D MHD simulations of an igniting NIF capsule. A study of magnetised burn propagation in the idealized planar model identifies three regimes of magnetized burn propagation: (1) thermal conduction driven; (2) alpha transport driven; and (3) fully suppressed burn. Simulations of NIF shot N210808 with an applied 40T axial field show clear indication of burn suppression perpendicular to field lines, with rapid burn observed along field lines. Implosion shape is altered by the field, and anisotropic conduction causes significant modification to the rate of ablation during stagnation. These results highlight the fundamental changes to implosion dynamics in high yield magnetized ICF and motivate further study to better optimize future magnetized target designs for high gain., Comment: 16 pages, 14 figures. Interpretation of the ongoing efforts to simulate the atmospheres of potentially-habitable terrestrial exoplanets requires that we understand the underlying dynamics and chemistry of such objects to a much greater degree than 1D or even simple 3D models enable. Here, for the tidally-locked habitable-zone planet TRAPPIST-1e, we explore one effect which can shape the dynamics and chemistry of terrestrial planets: the inclusion of an Earth-like land-ocean distribution with orography. To do this we use the Earth-system model WACCM6/CESM2 to run a pair of TRAPPIST-1e models with N$_2$-O$_2$ atmospheres and with the sub-stellar point fixed over either land or ocean. The presence of orography shapes atmospheric transport, and in the case of Earth-like orography, breaks the symmetry between the northern and southern hemispheres which was previously found in slab ocean models. For example, peak zonal jet speeds in the southern hemisphere are $50\rightarrow100\%$ faster than similar jets in the northern hemisphere. This also affects the meridional circulation, transporting equatorial material towards the south-pole. As a result we also find significant changes in the atmospheric chemistry, including the accumulation of potentially lethal quantities of ozone at both the south pole and the surface. Future studies which investigate the effects of land-mass distribution on the dynamics of exoplanetary atmospheres should pay close attention to both the day-side land-fraction as well as the orography of the land. The nearby oxygen-rich AGB star L2 Pup hosts a well-studied nearly edge-on disk. To date, disks around AGB stars have not been chemically studied in detail. By combining a parameterisation commonly used for protoplanetary disks and archival ALMA observations, we retrieved an updated density and temperature structure of this disk. This physical model was then used as input to the first chemical model of an AGB disk. The model shows that the physical structure of the disk has a large impact on its chemistry, with certain species showing large changes in column density relative to a radial outflow, indicating that chemistry could be used as a tracer of disks that cannot be directly imaged. Despite its oxygen-rich nature, the daughter species formed within the disk are surprisingly carbon-rich. Two chemical regimes can be distinguished: cosmic-ray induced chemistry in the midplane and photochemistry induced by the interstellar radiation field in the outer regions. Certain complex organic molecules are formed in the midplane. This occurs via gas-phase chemistry only, as the disk is too warm for dust-gas chemistry. The photochemistry in the outer regions leads to the efficient formation of (long) carbon-chains. The predictions of the model allow us to tentatively put the disk's age $\lesssim 10^5$ yr. Additional observations are necessary to better constrain the physical structure of L2 Pup's disk and are essential to test the predictions made by the chemical model. Ozone ($\textrm{O}_3$) is important for the survival of life on Earth because it shields the surface from ionising ultraviolet (UV) radiation. However, the existence of $\textrm{O}_3$ in Earth's atmosphere is not always beneficial. Resulting from anthropogenic activity, $\textrm{O}_3$ exists as a biologically harmful pollutant at the surface when it forms in the presence of sunlight and other pollutants. As a strong oxidiser, $\textrm{O}_3$ can be lethal to several different organisms; thus, when assessing the potential habitability of an exoplanet, a key part is determining whether toxic gases could be present at its surface. Using the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model version 6 (WACCM6; a three-dimensional chemistry-climate model), twelve atmospheric simulations of the terrestrial exoplanet TRAPPIST-1 e are performed with a variety of $\textrm{O}_2$ concentrations and assuming two different stellar spectra proposed in the literature. Four atmospheric simulations of the exoplanet Proxima Centauri b are also included. Some scenarios for both exoplanets exhibit time-averaged surface $\textrm{O}_3$ mixing ratios exceeding harmful levels of 40 ppbv, with 2200 ppbv the maximum concentration found in the cases simulated. These concentrations are toxic and can be fatal to most life on Earth. In other scenarios $\textrm{O}_3$ remains under harmful limits over a significant fraction of the surface, despite there being present regions which may prove inhospitable. In the case that $\textrm{O}_3$ is detected in a terrestrial exoplanet's atmosphere, determining the surface concentration is an important step when evaluating a planet's habitability., Comment: 24 pages, 8 figures. The use of magnetic fields to improve the performance of hohlraum-driven implosions on the National Ignition Facility (NIF) is discussed. The focus is on magnetically insulated inertial confinement fusion (ICF), where the primary field effect is to reduce electron-thermal and alpha-particle loss from the compressed hotspot (magnetic pressure is of secondary importance). We summarize the requirements to achieve this state. The design of recent NIF magnetized hohlraum experiments is presented. These are close to earlier shots in the three-shock, high-adiabat (BigFoot) campaign, subject to the constraints that magnetized NIF targets must be fielded at room-temperature, and use < 1 MJ of laser energy to avoid risk of optics damage from stimulated Brillouin scattering. We present results from the original magnetized hohlraum platform, as well as a later variant which gives higher hotspot temperature. In both platforms, imposed fields (at the capsule center) of up to 28 T increase the fusion yield and hotspot temperature. Integrated radiation-magneto-hydrodynamic (rad-MHD) modeling with the Lasnex code of these shots is shown, where laser power multipliers and a saturation clamp on cross-beam energy transfer (CBET) are developed to match the time of peak capsule emission and the P2 Legendre moment of the hotspot x-ray image. The resulting fusion yield and ion temperature agree decently with the measured relative effects of the field, although the absolute simulated yields are higher than the data by 2.0-2.7X. The tuned parameters and yield discrepancy are comparable for experiments with and without an imposed field, indicating the model adequately captures the field effects. Detailed astrochemical models are a key component to interpret the observations of interstellar and circumstellar molecules since they allow important physical properties of the gas and its evolutionary history to be deduced. We update one of the most widely used astrochemical databases to reflect advances in experimental and theoretical estimates of rate coefficients and to respond to the large increase in the number of molecules detected in space since our last release in 2013. We present the sixth release of the UMIST Database for Astrochemistry (UDfA), a major expansion of the gas-phase chemistry that describes the synthesis of interstellar and circumstellar molecules. Since our last release, we have undertaken a major review of the literature which has increased the number of reactions by over 40% to a total of 8767 and increased the number of species by over 55% to 737. We have made a particular attempt to include many of the new species detected in space over the past decade, including those from the QUIJOTE and GOTHAM surveys, as well as providing references to the original data sources. We use the database to investigate the gas-phase chemistries appropriate to O-rich and C-rich conditions in TMC-1 and to the circumstellar envelope of the C-rich AGB star IRC+10216 and identify successes and failures of gas-phase only models. This update is a significant improvement to the UDfA database. For the dark cloud and C-rich circumstellar envelope models, calculations match around 60% of the abundances of observed species to within an order of magnitude. There are a number of detected species, however, that are not included in the model either because their gas-phase chemistry is unknown or because they are likely formed via surface reactions on icy grains. Resistive diffusion is typically regarded to be negligible in magnetized ICF experiments, with magnetic flux effectively compressed during the implosion. In this work the Richtmyer Meshkov instability at the ice-ablator interface is taken as an example for investigating resistive effects. For a high temperature (approximately 100eV) interface with magnetic field applied perpendicular to shock propagation, perturbation growth is suppressed by magnetic tension. However, for lower temperature interfaces the resistive diffusion prevents substantial magnetic field twisting at small scales. ICF implosion simulations are then used to assess magnetic diffusivity at different interfaces; the ice-ablator interface is found to be too resistive for the magnetic fields to enhance stability. For Rayleigh-Taylor growth at the hot-spot edge, on the other hand, resistivity is estimated to only be a secondary effect, as seen in previous simulation studies.

Magnetic fields generated from a laser-foil interaction are measured with high fidelity using a proton radiography scheme with in situ x-ray fiducials. In contrast to prior findings under similar experimental conditions, this technique reveals the self-generated, Biermann-battery fields extend beyond the edge of the expanding plasma plume to a radius of over 3.5 mm by t=+1.4 ns, a result not captured in state-of-the-art magneto-hydrodynamics simulations. An analysis of two mono-energetic proton populations confirms that proton deflection is dominated by magnetic fields far from the interaction (>2 mm) and electric fields are insignificant. Doping a Mott insulator gives rise to unconventional superconducting correlations. Here we address the interplay between d-wave superconductivity and Mott physics using the two-dimensional Hubbard model with cellular dynamical mean-field theory on a $2\times2$ plaquette. Our approach is to study superconducting correlations from the perspective of a cluster quantum impurity model embedded in a self-consistent bath. At the level of the cluster, we calculate the probabilities of the possible cluster electrons configurations. Upon condensation we find an increased probability that cluster electrons occupy a four-electron singlet configuration, enabling us to identify this type of short-range spin correlations as key to superconducting pairing. The increased probability of this four-electron singlet comes at the expense of a reduced probability of a four-electron triplet with no significant probability redistribution of fluctuations of charges. This allows us to establish that superconductivity at the level of the cluster primarily involves a reorganisation of short-range spin correlations rather than charge correlations. We gain information about the bath by studying the spectral weight of the hybridization function. Upon condensation, we find a transfer of spectral weight leading to the opening of a superconducting gap. We use these insights to interpret the signatures of superconducting correlations in the density of states of the system and in the zero-frequency spin susceptibility., Comment: 19 pages, 10 figures; accepted version

The growth rate of the non-linear ablative Rayleigh-Taylor (RT) instability is enhanced by magnetic fields self-generated by the Biermann battery mechanism; a scaling for this effect with perturbation height and wavelength is proposed and validated with extended-magnetohydrodynamic simulations. The magnetic flux generation rate around a single RT spike is found to scale with the spike height. The Hall Parameter, which quantifies electron magnetization, is found to be strongly enhanced for short wavelength spikes due to Nernst compression of the magnetic field at the spike tip. The impact of the magnetic field on spike growth is through both the suppressed thermal conduction into the unstable spike and the Righi-Leduc heat-flow deflecting heat from the spike tip to the base. Righi-Leduc is found to be the dominant effect for small Hall Parameters, while suppressed thermal conduction dominates for large Hall Parameters. These results demonstrate the importance of considering magnetic fields in all perturbed inertial confinement fusion hot-spots.

We predict sound anomalies at the doping $\delta_{p}$ where the pseudogap ends in the normal state of hole-doped cuprates. Our prediction is based on the two-dimensional compressible Hubbard model using cluster dynamical mean-field theory. We find sharp anomalies (dips) in the velocity of sound as a function of doping and interaction. These dips are a signature of supercritical phenomena, stemming from an electronic transition without symmetry breaking below the superconducting dome. If experimentally verified, these signatures may help to solve the fundamental question of the nature of the pseudogap -- pinpointing its origin as due to Mott physics and resulting short-range correlations., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, and supplemental material; accepted version

Magnetization of inertial confinement implosions is a promising means of improving their performance, owing to the potential reduction of energy losses within the target and mitigation of hydrodynamic instabilities. In particular, cylindrical implosions are useful for studying the influence of a magnetic field thanks to their axial symmetry. Here we present experimental results from cylindrical implosions on the OMEGA-60 laser using a 40-beam, 14.5 kJ, 1.5 ns drive and an initial seed magnetic field of B0=24 T along the axis of the targets, compared with reference results without an imposed B-field. Implosions were characterized using time-resolved X-ray imaging from two orthogonal lines of sight. We found that the data agree well with magnetohydrodynamic simulations once radiation transport within the imploding plasma is considered. We show that for a correct interpretation of the data in this type of experiments, explicit radiation transport must be taken into account.

Investigating the potential benefits of the use of magnetic fields in Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF) experiments has given rise to new experimental platforms like the Magnetized Liner Inertial Fusion (MagLIF) approach at the Z-machine (Sandia National Laboratories), or its laser-driven equivalent at OMEGA (Laboratory for Laser Energetics). Implementing these platforms at MJ-scale laser facilities, such as the Laser MegaJoule (LMJ) or the National Ignition Facility (NIF), is crucial to reaching self-sustained nuclear fusion and enlarges the level of magnetization that can be achieved through a higher compression. In this paper, we present a complete design of an experimental platform for magnetized implosions using cylindrical targets at LMJ. A seed magnetic field is generated along the axis of the cylinder using laser-driven coil targets, minimizing debris and increasing diagnostic access compared with pulsed power field generators. We present a comprehensive simulation study of the initial B-field generated with these coil targets, as well as 2-dimensional extended magneto-hydrodynamics (MHD) simulations showing that a 5T initial B-field is compressed up to 25kT during the implosion. Under these circumstances, the electrons become magnetized, which severely modifies the plasma conditions at stagnation. In particular, in the hot spot the electron temperature is increased (from 1keV to 5keV) while the density is reduced (from 40gcc to 7gcc). We discuss how these changes can be diagnosed using X-ray imaging and spectroscopy, and particle diagnostics. We propose the simultaneous use of two dopants in the fuel (Ar and Kr) to act as spectroscopic tracers. We show that this introduces an effective spatial resolution in the plasma which permits an unambiguous observation of the B-field effects. Additionally, we present a plan for future experiments of this kind at LMJ.

Molecules in space are synthesized via a large variety of gas-phase reactions, and reactions on dust-grain surfaces, where the surface acts as a catalyst. Especially, saturated, hydrogen-rich molecules are formed through surface chemistry. Astrochemical models have developed over the decades to understand the molecular processes in the interstellar medium, taking into account grain surface chemistry. However, essential input information for gas-grain models, such as binding energies of molecules to the surface, have been derived experimentally only for a handful of species, leaving hundreds of species with highly uncertain estimates. Moreover, some fundamental processes are not well enough constrained to implement these into the models. The proceedings gives three examples how computational chemistry techniques can help answer fundamental questions regarding grain surface chemistry., Comment: (12 pages, 8 figures)

This paper investigates the impact of an applied magnetic field on the yield and hot-spot temperature of inertial confinement fusion implosions. A scaling of temperature amplification due to magnetization is shown to be in agreement with unperturbed 2-D extended-magnetohydrodynamic simulations. A perfectly spherical hot-spot with an axial magnetic field is predicted to have a maximum temperature amplification of 37%. However, elongation of the hot-spot along field lines raises this value by decreasing the hot-spot surface area along magnetic field lines. A scaling for yield amplification predicts that a magnetic field has the greatest benefit for low temperature implosions; this is in agreement with simplified 1-D simulations, but not 2-D simulations where the hot-spot pressure can be significantly reduced by heat-flow anisotropy. Simulations including a P2 drive asymmetry then show that the magnetized yield is a maximum when the capsule drive corrects the hot-spot shape to be round at neutron bang-time. The benefit of an applied field increases when the implosion is more highly perturbed. Increasing the magnetic field strength past the value required to magnetize the electrons is beneficial due to additional suppression of perturbations by magnetic tension.

Biermann battery magnetic field generation driven by high power laser-solid interactions is explored in experiments performed with the OMEGA EP laser system. Proton deflectometry captures changes to the strength, spatial profile, and temporal dynamics of the self-generated magnetic fields as the target material or laser intensity is varied. Measurements of the magnetic flux during the interaction are used to help validate extended magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations. Results suggest that kinetic effects cause suppression of the Biermann battery mechanism in laser-plasma interactions relevant to both direct and indirect-drive inertial confinement fusion. Experiments also find that more magnetic flux is generated as the target atomic number is increased, which is counter to a standard MHD understanding., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

A key open issue in condensed matter physics is how quantum and classical correlations emerge in an unconventional superconductor from the underlying normal state. We study this problem in a doped Mott insulator with information theory tools on the two-dimensional Hubbard model at finite temperature with cluster dynamical mean-field theory. We find that the local entropy detects the superconducting state and that the difference in the local entropy between the superconducting and normal states follows the same difference in the potential energy. We find that the thermodynamic entropy is suppressed in the superconducting state and monotonically decreases with decreasing doping. The maximum in entropy found in the normal state above the overdoped region of the superconducting dome is obliterated by superconductivity. The total mutual information, which quantifies quantum and classical correlations, is amplified in the superconducting state of the doped Mott insulator for all doping levels, and shows a broad peak versus doping, as a result of competing quantum and classical effects., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, and supplementary information; accepted version

High energy gain in inertial fusion schemes requires the propagation of a thermonuclear burn wave from hot to cold fuel. We consider the problem of burn propagation when a magnetic field is orthogonal to the burn wave. Using an extended-MHD model with a magnetized $\alpha$ energy transport equation we find that the magnetic field can reduce the rate of burn propagation by suppressing electron thermal conduction and $\alpha$ particle flux. Magnetic field transport during burn propagation is subject to competing effects: field can be advected from cold to hot regions by ablation of cold fuel, while the Nernst and $\alpha$ particle flux effects transport field from hot to cold fuel. These effects, combined with the temperature increase due to burn, can cause the electron Hall parameter to grow rapidly at the burn front. This results in the formation of a self-insulating layer between hot and cold fuel that reduces electron thermal conductivity and $\alpha$ transport, increases the temperature gradient and reduces the rate of burn propagation.

To explain the properties of dust in the interstellar medium (ISM), the presence of a refractory organic mantle is necessary. The outflows of AGB stars are among the main contributors of stellar dust to the ISM. We present the first study of the refractory organic contribution of AGB stars to the ISM. Based on laboratory experiments, we included a new reaction in our extended chemical kinetics model: the photoprocessing of volatile complex ices into inert refractory organic material. The refractory organic feedback of AGB outflows to the ISM is estimated using observationally motivated parent species and grids of models of C-rich and O-rich outflows. Refractory organic material is mainly inherited from the gas phase through accretion onto the dust and subsequent photoprocessing. Grain-surface chemistry, initiated by photodissociation of ices, produces only a minor part and takes place in a sub-monolayer regime in almost all outflows. The formation of refractory organic material increases with outflow density and depends on the initial gas-phase composition. While O-rich dust is negligibly covered by refractory organics, C-rich dust has an average coverage of $3-9\%$, but can be as high as $8-22\%$. Although C-rich dust does not enter the ISM bare, its average coverage is too low to influence its evolution in the ISM or significantly contribute to the coverage of interstellar dust. This study opens up questions on the coverage of other dust-producing environments. Tools of quantum information theory offer a new perspective to characterize phases and phase transitions in interacting many-body quantum systems. The Hubbard model is the archetypal model of such systems and can explain rich phenomena of quantum matter with minimal assumptions. Recent measurements of entanglement-related properties of this model using ultracold atoms in optical lattices hint that entanglement could provide the key to understanding open questions of the doped Hubbard model, including the remarkable properties of the pseudogap phase. These experimental findings call for a theoretical framework and new predictions. Here we approach the doped Hubbard model in two dimensions from the perspective of quantum information theory. We study the local entropy and the total mutual information across the doping-driven Mott transition within plaquette cellular dynamical mean-field theory. We find that upon varying doping these two entanglement-related properties detect the Mott insulating phase, the strongly correlated pseudogap phase, and the metallic phase. Imprinted in the entanglement-related properties we also find the pseudogap to correlated metal first-order transition, its finite temperature critical endpoint, and its supercritical crossovers. Through this footprint we reveal an unexpected interplay of quantum and classical correlations. Our work shows that sharp variation in the entanglement-related properties and not broken symmetry phases characterizes the onset of the pseudogap phase at finite temperature., Comment: 18 pages, 16 figures; accepted version

AGB stars are, together with supernovae, the main contributors of stellar dust to the interstellar medium (ISM). Dust grains formed by AGB stars are thought to be large. However, as dust nucleation and growth within their outflows are still not understood, the dust-grain size distribution (GSD) is unknown. This is an important uncertainty regarding our knowledge of the chemical and physical history of interstellar dust, as AGB dust forms $\sim$ 70% of the starting point of its evolution. We expand on our chemical kinetics model, which uniquely includes a comprehensive dust-gas chemistry. The GSD is now allowed to deviate from the commonly assumed canonical Mathis et al. (1977) distribution. We find that the specific GSD can significantly influence the dust-gas chemistry within the outflow. Our results show that the level of depletion of gas-phase species depends on the average grain surface area of the GSD. Gas-phase abundance profiles and their possible depletions can be retrieved from observations of molecular emission lines when using a range of transitions. Due to degeneracies within the prescription of GSD, specific parameters cannot be retrieved, only (a lower limit to) the average grain surface area. Nonetheless, this can discriminate between dust composed of predominantly large or small grains. We show that when combined with other observables such as the spectral energy distribution and polarised light, depletion levels from molecular gas-phase abundance profiles can constrain the elusive GSD of the dust delivered to the ISM by AGB outflows., Comment: 17 pages, 10 figures, 6 tables. Chemical modelling of AGB outflows is typically focused on either non-thermodynamic equilibrium chemistry in the inner region or photon-driven chemistry in the outer region. We include, for the first time, a comprehensive dust-gas chemistry in our AGB outflow chemical kinetics model, including both dust-gas interactions and grain-surface chemistry. The dust is assumed to have formed in the inner region, and follows an interstellar-like dust-size distribution. Using radiative transfer modelling, we obtain dust temperature profiles for different dust types in an O-rich and a C-rich outflow. We calculate a grid of models, sampling different outflow densities, drift velocities between the dust and gas, and dust types. Dust-gas chemistry can significantly affect the gas-phase composition, depleting parent and daughter species and increasing the abundance of certain daughter species via grain-surface formation followed by desorption/sputtering. Its influence depends on four factors: outflow density, dust temperature, initial composition, and drift velocity. The largest effects are for higher density outflows with cold dust and O-rich parent species, as these species generally have a larger binding energy. At drift velocities larger than $\sim 10$ km s$^{-1}$, ice mantles undergo sputtering; however, they are not fully destroyed. Models with dust-gas chemistry can better reproduce the observed depletion of species in O-rich outflows. When including colder dust in the C-rich outflows and adjusting the binding energy of CS, the depletion in C-rich outflows is also better reproduced. Observations of young stellar objects (YSOs) in centimeter bands can probe the continuum emission from growing dust grains, ionized winds, and magnetospheric activity, which are intimately connected to the evolution of protoplanetary disks and the formation of planets. We have carried out sensitive continuum observations toward the Ophiuchus A star-forming region using the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) at 10 GHz over a field-of-view of 6$'$ with a spatial resolution of $\theta_{maj}$ $\times$ $\theta_{min}$ $\sim$ 0.4$''$ $\times$ 0.2$''$. We achieved a 5 $\mu$Jy beam$^{-1}$ root-mean-square noise level at the center of our mosaic field of view. Among the eighteen sources we detected, sixteen are YSOs (three Class 0, five Class I, six Class II, and two Class III) and two are extragalactic candidates. We find that thermal dust emission generally contributes less that 30% of the emission at 10 GHz. The radio emission is dominated by other types of emission such as gyro-synchrotron radiation from active magnetospheres, free-free emission from thermal jets, free-free emission from the outflowing photo-evaporated disk material, and/or synchrotron emission from accelerated cosmic-rays in jet or protostellar surface shocks. These different types of emission could not be clearly disentangled. Our non-detections towards Class II/III disks suggest that extreme UV-driven photoevaporation is insufficient to explain the disk dispersal, assuming that the contribution of UV photoevaporating stellar winds to radio flux does not evolve with time. The sensitivity of our data cannot exclude photoevaporation due to X-ray photons as an efficient mechanism for disk dispersal. Recent experiments on cuprates show that as a function of doping, the normal-state specific heat sharply peaks at the doping $\delta^*$, where the pseudogap ends at low temperature. This finding is taken as the thermodynamic signature of a quantum critical point, whose nature has not yet been identified. Here we present calculations for the two-dimensional Hubbard model in the doped Mott insulator regime, which indicate that the specific heat anomaly can arise from the finite temperature critical endpoint of a first-order transition between a pseudogap phase with dominant singlet correlations and a metal. As a function of doping at the temperature of the endpoint, the specific heat diverges. Upon increasing temperature, the peak becomes broader. The diverging correlation length is associated with uniform density fluctuations. No broken symmetries are needed. We present simulations of ignition and burn based on the Highfoot and High-Density Carbon indirect drive designs of the National Ignition Facility for three regimes of alpha-heating - self-heating, robust ignition and propagating burn - exploring hotspot power balance, perturbations and hydrodynamic scaling. A Monte-Carlo Particle-in-Cell charged particle transport package for the radiation-magnetohydrodynamics code Chimera was developed for this work. Hotspot power balance between alpha-heating, electron thermal conduction and radiation was studied in 1D for each regime, and the impact of perturbations on this power balance explored in 3D using a single Rayleigh-Taylor spike. Heat flow into the spike from thermal conduction and alpha-heating increases by $\sim2-3\times$, due to sharper temperature gradients and increased proximity of the cold, dense material to the main fusion regions respectively. The radiative contribution remains largely unaffected in magnitude. Hydrodynamic scaling with capsule size and laser energy of two perturbation scenarios (a short-wavelength multi-mode & a low-mode radiation asymmetry) is explored in 3D, demonstrating the differing hydrodynamic evolution of the three alpha-heating regimes. The multi-mode yield increases faster with scale factor due to more synchronous $PdV$ compression producing higher temperatures and densities, and hence stronger bootstrapping. Effects on the hydrodynamic evolution are clearer for stronger alpha-heating regimes and include: reduced perturbation growth due to ablation from fire-polishing and stronger thermal conduction; sharper temperature and density gradients; and increased hotspot pressures which further compress the shell, increase hotspot size and induce faster re-expansion. Faster expansion into regions of weak confinement is more prominent for stronger alpha-heating regimes, and can result in loss of confinement., Comment: 21 pages, 17 figures, submitted to Nucl. Phase transitions and their associated crossovers are imprinted in the behavior of fluctuations. Motivated by recent experiments on ultracold atoms in optical lattices, we compute the thermodynamic density fluctuations $\delta N^2$ of the two-dimensional fermionic Hubbard model with plaquette cellular dynamical mean-field theory. To understand the length scale of these fluctuations, we separate the local from the nonlocal contributions to $\delta N^2$. We determine the effects of particle statistics, interaction strength $U$, temperature $T$ and density $n$. At high temperature, our theoretical framework reproduces the experimental observations in the doping-driven crossover regime between metal and Mott insulator. At low temperature, there is an increase of thermodynamic density fluctuations, analog to critical opalescence, accompanied by a surprising reduction of the absolute value of their nonlocal contributions. This is a precursory sign of an underlying phase transition between a pseudogap phase and a metallic phase in doped Mott insulators, which should play an important role in the cuprate high-temperature superconductors. Methanol (CH$_3$OH) is at the root of organic ice chemistry in protoplanetary disks. However, its weak emission has made detections difficult. To date, gas-phase CH$_3$OH has been detected in only one Class II disk, TW Hya. We use the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) to search for a total of four CH$_3$OH emission lines in bands 6 and 7 toward the disk around the young Herbig Ae star HD 163296. The disk-averaged column density of methanol and its related species formaldehyde (H$_2$CO) are estimated assuming optically thin emission in local thermodynamic equilibrium. We compare these results to the gas-phase column densities of the TW Hya disk. No targeted methanol lines were detected individually nor after line stacking. The 3$\sigma$ disk-integrated intensity upper limits are $< 51$ mJy km s$^{-1}$ for the band 6 lines and $< 26$ mJy km s$^{-1}$ for the band 7 lines. The band 7 lines provide the strictest 3$\sigma$ upper limit on disk-averaged column density with $N_{\mathrm{avg}} < 5.0 \times 10^{11}$ cm$^{-2}$. The methanol-to-formaldehyde ratio is CH$_3$OH/H$_2$CO $< 0.24$ in the HD 163296 disk compared to a ratio of $1.27$ in the TW Hya disk. Differences in the stellar irradiation of Herbig disks compared to T Tauri disks likely influence the gaseous methanol and formaldehyde content. Possible reasons for the lower HD 163296 methanol-to-formaldehyde ratio include: a higher than expected gas-phase formation of H$_2$CO in the HD 163296 disk, uncertainties in the grain surface formation efficiency of CH$_3$OH and H$_2$CO, and differences in the disk structure and/or CH$_3$OH and H$_2$CO desorption processes that release the molecules from ice mantles back into the gas phase. At the Mott transition, electron-electron interaction changes a metal, in which electrons are itinerant, to an insulator, in which electrons are localized. This phenomenon is central to quantum materials. Here we contribute to its understanding by studying the two-dimensional Hubbard model at finite temperature with plaquette cellular dynamical mean-field theory. We provide an exhaustive thermodynamic description of the correlation-driven Mott transition of the half-filled model by calculating pressure, charge compressibility, entropy, kinetic energy, potential energy and free energy across the first-order Mott transition and its high-temperature crossover (Widom line). The entropy is extracted from the Gibbs-Duhem relation and shows complex behavior near the transition, marked by discontinuous jumps at the first-order boundary, singular behavior at the Mott endpoint and inflections marking sharp variations in the supercritical region. The free energy allows us to identify the thermodynamic phase boundary, to discuss phases stability and metastability, and to touch upon nucleation and spinodal decomposition mechanisms for the transition. We complement this thermodynamic description of the Mott transition by an information-theoretic description. We achieve this by calculating the local entropy, which is a measure of entanglement, and the single-site total mutual information, which quantifies quantum and classical correlations. These information-theoretic measures exhibit characteristic behaviors that allow us to identify the first-order coexistence regions, the Mott critical endpoint and the crossovers along the Widom line in the supercritical region., Comment: 22 pages, 15 figures

Entanglement and information are powerful lenses to probe phases transitions in many-body systems. Motivated by recent cold atom experiments, which are now able to measure the corresponding information-theoretic quantities, we study the Mott transition in the half-filled two-dimensional Hubbard model using cellular dynamical mean-field theory, and focus on two key measures of quantum correlations: entanglement entropy and mutual information. In the high-mass star-forming region G35.20-0.74N, small scale (about 800 AU) chemical segregation has been observed in which complex organic molecules containing the CN group are located in a small location. We aim to determine the physical origin of the large abundance difference (about 4 orders of magnitude) in complex cyanides within G35.20-0.74 B, and we explore variations in age, gas and dust temperature, and gas density. We performed gas-grain astrochemical modeling experiments with exponentially increasing (coupled) gas and dust temperature rising from 10 to 500 K at constant H$_2$ densities of 10$^7$, 10$^8$, and 10$^9$ cm$^{-3}$. We tested the effect of varying the initial ice composition, cosmic-ray ionization rate, warm-up time (over 50, 200, and 1000 kyr), and initial (10, 15, and 25 K) and final temperatures (300 and 500 K). Varying the initial ice compositions within the observed and expected ranges does not noticeably affect the modeled abundances indicating that the chemical make-up of hot cores is determined in the warm-up stage. Complex cyanides vinyl and ethyl cyanide (CH$_2$CHCN and C$_2$H$_5$CN, respectively) cannot be produced in abundances (versus H$_2$) greater than 5x10$^{-10}$ for CH$_2$CHCN and 2x10$^{-10}$ for C$_2$H$_5$CN with a fast warm-up time (52 kyr), while the lower limit for the observed abundance of C$_2$H$_5$CN toward source B3 is 3.4x10$^{-10}$. Complex cyanide abundances are reduced at higher initial temperatures and increased at higher cosmic-ray ionization rates. Reproducing the observed abundances toward G35.20-0.74 Core B3 requires a fast warm-up at a high cosmic-ray ionization rate (1x10$^{-16}$ s$^{-1}$) at a high gas density (>10$^9$ cm$^{-3}$). G35.20-0.74 source B3 only needs to be about 2000 years older than B1/B2 for the observed chemical difference to be present. This work aims to understand which midplane conditions are probed by the DCO$^+$ emission in the disk around the Herbig Ae star HD 169142. We explore the sensitivity of the DCO$^+$ formation pathways to the gas temperature and the CO abundance. The DCO$^+$ $J$=3-2 transition was observed with ALMA at a spatial resolution of 0.3". The HD 169142 DCO$^+$ radial intensity profile reveals a warm, inner component at radii <30 AU and a broad, ring-like structure from ~50-230 AU with a peak at 100 AU just beyond the millimeter grain edge. We modeled DCO$^+$ emission in HD 169142 with a physical disk structure adapted from the literature, and employed a simple deuterium chemical network to investigate the formation of DCO$^+$ through the cold deuterium fractionation pathway via H$_2$D$^+$. Contributions from the warm deuterium fractionation pathway via CH$_2$D$^+$ are approximated using a constant abundance in the intermediate disk layers. Parameterized models show that alterations to the midplane gas temperature and CO abundance of the literature model are both needed to recover the observed DCO$^+$ radial intensity profile. The best-fit model contains a shadowed, cold midplane in the region z/r < 0.1 with an 8 K decrease in gas temperature and a factor of five CO depletion just beyond the millimeter grain edge, and a 2 K decrease in gas temperature for r > 120 AU. The warm deuterium fractionation pathway is implemented as a constant DCO$^+$ abundance of 2.0$\times$10$^{-12}$ between 30-70 K. The DCO$^+$ emission probes a reservoir of cold material in the HD 169142 outer disk that is not revealed by the millimeter continuum, the SED, nor the emission from the 12CO, 13CO, or C18O $J$=2-1 lines., Comment: Accepted to Astronomy & Astrophysics

We present a study of molecular gas in the inner disk $\left(r < 20 \, \text{AU} \right)$ around RY Lupi, with spectra from HST-COS, HST-STIS, and VLT-CRIRES. We model the radial distribution of flux from hot gas in a surface layer between $r = 0.1-10$ AU, as traced by Ly$\alpha$-pumped H$_2$. The result shows H$_2$ emission originating in a ring centered at $\sim$3 AU that declines within $r < 0.1$ AU, which is consistent with the behavior of disks with dust cavities. An analysis of the H$_2$ line shapes shows that a two-component Gaussian profile $\left(\text{FWHM}_{broad, H_2} = 105 \pm 15 \, \text{km s}^{-1}; \, \text{FWHM}_{narrow, H_2} = 43 \pm 13 \, \text{km s}^{-1} \right)$ is statistically preferred to a single-component Gaussian. We interpret this as tentative evidence for gas emitting from radially separated disk regions $\left( \left \langle r_{broad, H_2} \right \rangle \sim 0.4 \pm 0.1 \, \text{AU}; \, \left \langle r_{narrow, H_2} \right \rangle \sim 3 \pm 2 \, \text{AU} \right)$. The 4.7 $\mu$m $^{12}$CO emission lines are also well fit by two-component profiles $\left( \left \langle r_{broad, CO} \right \rangle = 0.4 \pm 0.1 \, \text{AU}; \, \left \langle r_{narrow, CO} \right \rangle = 15 \pm 2 \, \text{AU} \right)$. We combine these results with 10 $\mu$m observations to form a picture of gapped structure within the mm-imaged dust cavity, providing the first such overview of the inner regions of a young disk. Methanol is formed via surface reactions on icy dust grains. Methanol is also detected in the gas-phase at temperatures below its thermal desorption temperature and at levels higher than can be explained by pure gas-phase chemistry. The process that controls the transition from solid state to gas-phase methanol in cold environments is not understood. The goal of this work is to investigate whether thermal CO desorption provides an indirect pathway for methanol to co-desorb at low temperatures. Mixed CH$_{3}$OH:CO/CH$_{4}$ ices were heated under UHV (ultra-high vacuum) conditions and ice contents are traced using RAIRS (reflection absorption IR spectroscopy), while desorbing species were detected mass spectrometrically. An updated gas-grain chemical network was used to test the impact of the results of these experiments. The physical model used is applicable for TW Hya, a protoplanetary disk in which cold gas-phase methanol has recently been detected. Methanol release together with thermal CO desorption is found to be an ineffective process in the experiments, resulting in an upper limit of $\leq$ 7.3 $\times$ 10$^{-7}$ CH3OH molecules per CO molecule over all ice mixtures considered. Chemical modelling based on the upper limits shows that co-desorption rates as low as 10$^{-6}$ CH$_{3}$OH molecules per CO molecule are high enough to release substantial amounts of methanol to the gas-phase at and around the location of the CO thermal desorption front in a protoplanetary disk. Advanced telescopes, such as ALMA and JWST, are likely to show that the chemical universe may be even more complex than currently observed, requiring astrochemical modelers to improve their models to account for the impact of new data. However, essential input information for gas-grain models, such as binding energies of molecules to the surface, have been derived experimentally only for a handful of species, leaving hundreds of species with highly uncertain estimates. We present in this paper a systematic study of the effect of uncertainties in the binding energies on an astrochemical two-phase model of a dark molecular cloud, using the rate equations approach. A list of recommended binding energy values based on a literature search of published data is presented. Thousands of simulations of dark cloud models were run, and in each simulation a value for the binding energy of hundreds of species was randomly chosen from a normal distribution. Our results show that the binding energy of H$_{2}$ is critical for the surface chemistry. For high binding energy, H$_{2}$ freezes out on the grain forming an H$_{2}$ ice. This is not physically realistic and we suggest a change in the rate equations. The abundance ranges found are in reasonable agreement with astronomical ice observations. Pearson correlation coefficients revealed that the binding energy of HCO, HNO, CH$_{2}$, and C correlate most strongly with the abundance of dominant ice species. The protoplanetary system HD 169142 is one of the few cases where a potential candidate protoplanet has been recently detected via direct imaging. To study the interaction between the protoplanet and the disk itself observations of the gas and dust surface density structure are needed. This paper reports new ALMA observations of the dust continuum at 1.3\,mm, $^{12}$CO, $^{13}$CO and C$^{18}$O $J=2-1$ emission from the system HD 169142 at angular resolution of $\sim 0".18 - 0".28$ ($\sim 20\,$au$ - 33\,$au). The dust continuum emission reveals a double-ring structure with an inner ring between $0".17-0".28$ ($\sim 20 - 35\,$au) and an outer ring between $0".48-0".64$ ($\sim 56 - 83\,$au). The size and position of the inner ring is in good agreement with previous polarimetric observations in the near-infrared and is consistent with dust trapping by a massive planet. No dust emission is detected inside the inner dust cavity ($R \lesssim 20\,$au) or within the dust gap ($\sim 35 - 56\,$au). In contrast, the channel maps of the $J=2-1$ line of the three CO isotopologues reveal the presence of gas inside the dust cavity and dust gap. The gaseous disk is also much larger than the compact dust emission extending to $\sim 1'.5$ ($\sim 180\,$au) in radius. This difference and the sharp drop of the continuum emission at large radii point to radial drift of large dust grains ($>$ \micron-size). Using the thermo-chemical disk code \textsc{dali}, the continuum and the CO isotopologues emission are modelled to quantitatively measure the gas and dust surface densities. The resulting gas surface density is reduced by a factor of $\sim 30-40$ inward of the dust gap. The gas and dust distribution hint at the presence of multiple planets shaping the disk structure via dynamical clearing (dust cavity and gap) and dust trapping (double ring dust distribution)., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A
