Search

Deuteration has been used as a tracer of the evolutionary phases of low- and high-mass star formation. The APEX Telescope Large Area Survey (ATLASGAL) provides an important repository for a detailed statistical study of massive star-forming clumps in the inner Galactic disc at different evolutionary phases. We study the amount of deuteration using NH2D in a representative sample of high-mass clumps discovered by the ATLASGAL survey covering various evolutionary phases of massive star formation. Unbiased spectral line surveys at 3 mm were thus conducted towards ATLASGAL clumps between 85 and 93 GHz with the Mopra telescope and from 84 to 115 GHz using the IRAM 30m telescope. A subsample was followed up in the NH2D transition at 74 GHz with the IRAM 30m telescope. We determined the deuterium fractionation from the column density ratio of NH2D and NH3 and measured the NH2D excitation temperature for the first time from the simultaneous modelling of the 74 and 110 GHz line using MCWeeds. We find a large range of the NH2D to NH3 column density ratio up to 1.6+/-0.7 indicating a high degree of NH3 deuteration in a subsample of the clumps. Our analysis yields a clear difference between NH3 and NH2D rotational temperatures for a fraction of the sources. We therefore advocate observation of the NH2D transitions at 74 and 110 GHz simultaneously to determine the NH2D temperature directly. We determine a median ortho-to-para column density ratio of 3.7+/-1.2. The high detection rate of NH2D confirms a high deuteration previously found in massive star-forming clumps. Using the excitation temperature of NH2D instead of NH3 is needed to avoid an overestimation of deuteration. We measure a higher detection rate of NH2D in sources at early evolutionary stages. The deuterium fractionation shows no correlation with evolutionary tracers such as the NH3 (1,1) line width, or rotational temperature.

Context: Protostellar jets in high-mass young stellar objects (HMYSOs) play a key role in the understanding of star formation and provide us with an excellent tool to study fundamental properties of HMYSOs. Aims: We aim at studying the physical and kinematic properties of the near-IR (NIR) jet of IRAS\,13481-6124 from au to parsec scales. Methods: Our study includes NIR data from the Very Large Telescope instruments SINFONI, CRIRES, and ISAAC. Information about the source and its immediate environment is retrieved with SINFONI. The technique of spectro-astrometry is performed with CRIRES to study the jet on au scales. The parsec-scale jet and its kinematic and dynamic properties are investigated using ISAAC. Results: The SINFONI spectra in the $H$ and $K$ band are rich in emission lines that are mainly associated with ejection and accretion processes. Spectro-astrometry is applied to the Br$\gamma$ line, and for the first time, to the Br$\alpha$ line, revealing their jet origin with milliarcsecond-scale photocentre displacements ($11-15$\,au). This allows us to constrain the kinematics of the au-scale jet and to derive its position angle ($\sim216^{\circ}$). ISAAC spectroscopy reveals H$_2$ emission along the parsec-scale jet, which allows us to infer kinematic and dynamic properties of the NIR parsec-scale jet. The mass-loss rate inferred for the NIR jet is $\dot{M}_\mathrm{ejec}\sim10^{-4}\mathrm{\,M_\odot\,yr^{-1}}$ and the thrust is $\dot{P}\sim10^{-2}\mathrm{\,M_\odot\,yr^{-1}\,km\,s^{-1}}$ , which is roughly constant for the formation history of the young star. A tentative estimate of the ionisation fraction is derived for the massive jet by comparing the radio and NIR mass-loss rates. An ionisation fraction $\lesssim8\%$ is obtained, which means that the bulk of the ejecta is traced by the NIR jet and that the radio jet only delineates a small portion of it., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

As part of our effort to search for circumstellar disks around high-mass stellar objects, we observed the well-known core G31.41+0.31 with ALMA at 1.4 mm with an angular resolution of~0.22" (~1700 au). The dust continuum emission has been resolved into two cores namely Main and NE. The Main core, which has the stronger emission and is the more chemically rich, has a diameter of ~5300 au, and is associated with two free-free continuum sources. The Main core looks featureless and homogeneous in dust continuum emission and does not present any hint of fragmentation. Each transition of CH3CN and CH3OCHO, both ground and vibrationally excited, as well as those of CH3CN isotopologues, shows a clear velocity gradient along the NE-SW direction, with velocity linearly increasing with distance from the center, consistent with solid-body rotation. However, when comparing the velocity field of transitions with different upper level energies, the rotation velocity increases with increasing energy of the transition, which suggests that the rotation speeds up towards the center. Spectral lines towards the dust continuum peak show an inverse P-Cygni profile that supports the existence of infall in the core. The infall velocity increases with the energy of the transition suggesting that the infall is accelerating towards the center of the core, consistent with gravitational collapse. Despite the monolithic appearance of the Main core, the presence of red-shifted absorption, the existence of two embedded free-free sources at the center, and the rotational spin-up are consistent with an unstable core undergoing fragmentation with infall and differential rotation due to conservation of angular momentum. Therefore, the most likely explanation for the monolithic morphology is that the large opacity of the dust emission prevents the detection of any inhomogeneity in the core., Comment: 28 pages, 16 figures, and 7 tables. Context. Recent observations of the massive young stellar object S255 NIRS 3 have revealed a large increase in both methanol maser flux density and IR emission, which have been interpreted as the result of an accretion outburst, possibly due to instabilities in a circumstellar disk. This indicates that this type of accretion event could be common in young/forming early-type stars and in their lower mass siblings, and supports the idea that accretion onto the star may occur in a non-continuous way. Aims. As accretion and ejection are believed to be tightly associated phenomena, we wanted to confirm the accretion interpretation of the outburst in S255 NIRS 3 by detecting the corresponding burst of the associated thermal jet. Methods. We monitored the radio continuum emission from S255 NIRS 3 at four bands using the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array. The millimetre continuum emission was also observed with both the Northern Extended Millimeter Array of IRAM and the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array. Results. We have detected an exponential increase in the radio flux density from 6 to 45 GHz starting right after July 10, 2016, namely about 13 months after the estimated onset of the IR outburst. This is the first ever detection of a radio burst associated with an IR accretion outburst from a young stellar object. The flux density at all observed centimetre bands can be reproduced with a simple expanding jet model. At millimetre wavelengths we infer a marginal flux increase with respect to the literature values and we show this is due to free-free emission from the radio jet. We present a review of the properties of Class I methanol masers detected in low-mass star forming regions (LMSFRs). These masers, henceforth called LMMIs, are associated with postshock gas in the lobes of chemically active outflows in LMSFRs NGC1333, NGC2023, HH25, and L1157. LMMIs share the main properties with powerful masers in regions of massive star formation and are a low-luminosity edge of the total Class I maser population. However, the exploration of just these objects may push forward the exploration of Class I masers, since many LMSFRs are located only 200--300 pc from the Sun, making it possible to study associated objects in detail. EVLA observations with a $0.2"$ spatial resolution show that the maser images consist of unresolved or barely resolved spots with brightness temperatures up to $5\times 10^5$ K. The initial conditions of molecular clumps in which high-mass stars form are poorly understood. In particular, a more detailed study of the earliest evolutionary phases is needed. The APEX Telescope Large Area Survey of the whole inner Galactic disk at 870 micron, ATLASGAL, has been conducted to discover high-mass star-forming regions at different evolutionary phases. Using the Parkes telescope, we observed the NH3 (1,1) to (3,3) inversion transitions towards 354 ATLASGAL clumps in the fourth quadrant. For a subsample of 289 sources, the N2H+ (1-0) line was measured with the Mopra telescope. We measured a median NH3(1,1) line width of about 2 km/s and rotational temperatures from 12 to 28 K with a mean of 18 K. For a subsample with detected NH3 (2,2) hyperfine components, we found that the commonly used method to compute the (2,2) optical depth from the (1,1) optical depth and the (2,2) to (1,1) main beam brightness temperature ratio leads to an underestimation of the rotational temperature and column density. A larger median virial parameter of about 1 is determined using the broader N2H+ line width than is estimated from the NH3 line width of about 0.5 with a general trend of a decreasing virial parameter with increasing gas mass. We found a warmer surrounding of ATLASGAL clumps than the surrounding of low-mass cores and smaller velocity dispersions in low-mass than high-mass star-forming regions. The NH3 (1,1) inversion transition of 49% of the sources shows hyperfine structure anomalies. The intensity ratio of the outer hyperfine structure lines with a median of 1.27+/-0.03 and a standard deviation of 0.45 is significantly higher than 1, while the intensity ratios of the inner satellites with a median of 0.9+/-0.02 and standard deviation of 0.3 and the sum of the inner and outer hyperfine components with a median of 1.06+/-0.02 and standard deviation of 0.37 are closer to 1., Comment: 20 pages, 20 figures

Pre-stellar cores represent the initial conditions in the process of star and planet formation, therefore it is important to study their physical and chemical structure. Because of their volatility, nitrogen-bearing molecules are key to study the dense and cold gas present in pre-stellar cores. The NH_3 rotational transition detected with Herschel-HIFI provides a unique combination of sensitivity and spectral resolution to further investigate physical and chemical processes in pre-stellar cores. Here we present the velocity-resolved Herschel-HIFI observations of the ortho-NH_3(1_0-0_0) line at 572 GHz and study the abundance profile of ammonia across the pre-stellar core L1544 to test current theories of its physical and chemical structure. Recently calculated collisional coefficients have been included in our non-LTE radiative transfer code to reproduce Herschel observations. A gas-grain chemical model, including spin-state chemistry and applied to the (static) physical structure of L1544 is also used to infer the abundance profile of ortho-NH_3 . The hyperfine structure of ortho-NH_3(1_0-0_0) is resolved for the first time in space. All the hyperfine components are strongly self-absorbed. The profile can be reproduced if the core is contracting in quasi-equilibrium, consistent with previous work, and if the NH_3 abundance is slightly rising toward the core centre, as deduced from previous interferometric observations of para-NH_3(1,1). The chemical model overestimates the NH_3 abundance at radii between ~ 4000 and 15000 AU by about two orders of magnitude and underestimates the abundance toward the core centre by more than one order of magnitude. Solar-mass stars form via circumstellar disk accretion (disk-mediated accretion). Recent findings indicate that this process is likely episodic in the form of accretion bursts, possibly caused by disk fragmentation. Although it cannot be ruled out that high-mass young stellar objects (HMYSOs; $M>$8 M$_\odot$, $L_{bol}>$5$\times$10$^3$ L$_\odot$) arise from the coalescence of their low-mass brethren, latest results suggest that they more likely form via disks. Accordingly, disk-mediated accretion bursts should occur. Here we report on the discovery of the first disk-mediated accretion burst from a $\sim$20 M$_\odot$ HMYSO. Our near-infrared images show the brightening of the central source and its outflow cavities. Near-infrared spectroscopy reveals emission lines typical of accretion bursts in low-mass protostars, but orders of magnitude more luminous. Moreover, the energy released and the inferred mass-accretion rate are also orders of magnitude larger. Our results identify disk accretion as the common mechanism of star formation across the entire stellar mass spectrum., Comment: 27 pages, 3 figures. Aims: We resolve the small-scale structure around the high-mass hot core region G351.77-0.54 to investigate its disk and fragmentation properties. Methods: Using ALMA at 690GHz with baselines exceeding 1.5km, we study the dense gas, dust and outflow emission at an unprecedented spatial resolution of 0.06" (130AU@2.2kpc). Results: Within the inner few 1000AU, G351.77 fragments into at least four cores (brightness temperatures between 58 and 197K). The central structure around the main submm source #1 with a diameter of ~0.5" does not show additional fragmentation. While the CO(6-5) line wing emission shows an outflow lobe in the north-western direction emanating from source #1, the dense gas tracer CH3CN shows a velocity gradient perpendicular to the outflow that is indicative of rotational motions. Absorption profile measurements against the submm source #2 indicate infall rates on the order of 10^{-4} to 10^{-3}M_sun/yr which can be considered as an upper limit of the mean accretion rates. The position-velocity diagrams are consistent with a central rotating disk-like structure embedded in an infalling envelope, but they may also be influenced by the outflow. Using the CH_3CN(37_k-36_k) k-ladder with excitation temperatures up to 1300K, we derive a gas temperature map of source #1 exhibiting temperatures often in excess of 1000K. Brightness temperatures of the submm continuum never exceed 200K. This discrepancy between gas temperatures and submm dust brightness temperatures (in the optically thick limit) indicates that the dust may trace the disk mid-plane whereas the gas could be tracing a hotter gaseous disk surface layer. In addition, we conduct a pixel-by-pixel Toomre gravitational stability analysis of the central rotating structure. IRAS 18511+0146 is a young embedded (proto)cluster located at 3.5 kpc surrounding what appears to be an intermediate mass protostar. In this paper, we investigate the nature of cluster members (two of which are believed to be the most massive and luminous) using imaging and spectroscopy in the near and mid-infrared. The brightest point-like object associated with IRAS 18511+0146 is referred to as S7 in the present work (designated UGPS J185337.88+015030.5 in the UKIRT Galactic Plane survey). Seven of the nine objects show rising spectral energy distributions (SED) in the near-infrared, with four objects showing Br-gamma emission. Three members: S7, S10 (also UGPS J185338.37+015015.3) and S11 (also UGPS J185338.72+015013.5) are bright in mid-infrared with diffuse emission being detected in the vicinity of S11 in PAH bands. Silicate absorption is detected towards these three objects, with an absorption maximum between 9.6 and 9.7 um, large optical depths (1.8-3.2), and profile widths of 1.6-2.1 um. The silicate profiles of S7 and S10 are similar, in contrast to S11 (which has the largest width and optical depth). The cold dust emission investigated using Herschel HiGal peaks at S7, with temperature at 26 K and column density N(H2) ~ 7 x 10^(22) cm^(-2). The bolometric luminosity of IRAS 18511 region is L ~ 1.8 x 10^4 L_sun. S7 is the main contributor to the bolometric luminosity, with L (S7) > 10^4 L_sun. S7 is a high mass protostellar object with ionised stellar winds, evident from the correlation between radio and bolometric luminosity as well as the asymmetric Br-gamma profile. The differences in silicate profiles of S7 and S11 could be due to different radiation environment as we believe the former to be more massive and in an earlier phase than the latter., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Massive stars, multiple stellar systems and clusters are born from the gravitational collapse of massive dense gaseous clumps, and the way these systems form strongly depends on how the parent clump fragments into cores during collapse. Numerical simulations show that magnetic fields may be the key ingredient in regulating fragmentation. Here we present ALMA observations at ~0.25'' resolution of the thermal dust continuum emission at ~278 GHz towards a turbulent, dense, and massive clump, IRAS 16061-5048c1, in a very early evolutionary stage. The ALMA image shows that the clump has fragmented into many cores along a filamentary structure. We find that the number, the total mass and the spatial distribution of the fragments are consistent with fragmentation dominated by a strong magnetic field. Class I CH$_3$OH masers trace interstellar shocks. They have received little attention mostly as a consequence of their low luminosities; this situation has changed recently and Class I masers are now routinely used as signposts of outflows. The recent detection of polarisation in Class I lines now makes it possible to obtain information on magnetic fields in shocks. We make use of newly calculated collisional rates to investigate the excitation of Class I masers and to reconcile their observed properties with model results. We performed LVG calculations with a plane-parallel slab geometry to compute the pump and loss rates which regulate the interactions of the different maser systems with the maser reservoir. We study the dependence of the pump rate, the loss rate, and the inversion efficiency of the pumping scheme of Class I masers on the physics of the gas. Bright Class I masers are mainly high-temperature high-density structures with maser emission measures corresponding to high CH$_3$OH abundances close to the limits set by collisional quenching. Our model reproduces reasonably well most of the observed properties of Class I masers. The 25 GHz masers are the most sensitive to the density and mase at higher densities than other lines. Moreover, even at high density and high abundance, their luminosity is lower than that of the 44 GHz and 36 GHz lines. By comparison between observed isotropic photon luminosities and our model, we infer beam solid angles of ~0.001 steradian. Class I masers can be separated into 3 families: the $(J+1)_{-1}-J_{0}$-E type, the $(J+1)_0-J_1$-A type, and the $J_2-J_1$-E lines. The 25 GHz lines behave in a different fashion from the other masers as they are only inverted at densities above $10^6$ cm$^{-3}$ in contrast to other Class I masers. We present Herschel, ALMA Compact Array (ACA), and Caltech Submillimeter Observatory (CSO) observations of the prestellar core in L1689N, which has been suggested to be interacting with a molecular outflow driven by the nearby solar type protostar IRAS 16293-2422. This source is characterized by some of the highest deuteration levels seen in the interstellar medium. The change in the NH2D line velocity and width across the core provides clear evidence of an interaction with the outflow, traced by the high-velocity water emission. Quiescent, cold gas, characterized by narrow line widths is seen in the NE part of the core, while broader, more disturbed line profiles are seen in the W/SW part. Strong N2D+ and ND3 emission is detected with the ACA, extending S/SW from the peak of the single-dish NH2D emission. The ACA data also reveal the presence a compact dust continuum source, with a mean size of ~1100 au, a central density of (1-2) 10^7 cm-3, and a mass of 0.2-0.4 Msun. The dust emission peak is displaced ~5" to the south with respect to the N2D+ and ND3 emission, as well as the single-dish dust continuum peak, suggesting that the northern, quiescent part of the core is characterized by spatially extended continuum emission, which is resolved out by the interferometer. We see no clear evidence of fragmentation in this quiescent part of the core, which could lead to a second generation of star formation, although a weak dust continuum source is detected in this region in the ACA data., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal, 20 pages, 10 figures, 2 tables

Orion KL has served as a benchmark for spectral line searches throughout the (sub)millimeter regime. The main goal is to systematically study spectral characteristics of Orion KL in the 1.3 cm band. We carried out a spectral line survey (17.9 GHz to 26.2 GHz) with the Effelsberg-100 m telescope towards Orion KL. We find 261 spectral lines, yielding an average line density of about 32 spectral features per GHz above 3$\sigma$. The identified lines include 164 radio recombination lines (RRLs) and 97 molecular lines. A total of 23 molecular transitions from species known to exist in Orion KL are detected for the first time in the interstellar medium. Non-metastable 15NH3 transitions are detected in Orion KL for the first time. Based on the velocity information of detected lines and the ALMA images, the spatial origins of molecular emission are constrained and discussed. A narrow feature is found in SO2 ($8_{1,7}-7_{2,6}$), possibly suggesting the presence of a maser line. Column densities and fractional abundances relative to H2 are estimated for 12 molecules with LTE methods. Rotational diagrams of non-metastable 14NH3 transitions with J=K+1 to J=K+4 yield different results; metastable 15NH3 is found to have a higher excitation temperature than non-metastable 15NH3, indicating that they may trace different regions. Elemental and isotopic abundance ratios are estimated: 12C/13C=63+-17, 14N/15N=100+-51, D/H=0.0083+-0.0045. The dispersion of the He/H ratios derived from H$\alpha$/He$\alpha$ pairs to H$\delta$/He$\delta$ pairs is very small, which is consistent with theoretical predictions that the departure coefficients bn factors for hydrogen and helium are nearly identical. Based on a non-LTE code neglecting excitation by the infrared radiation field and a likelihood analysis, we find that the denser regions have lower kinetic temperature, which favors an external heating of the Hot Core., Comment: 70 pages, 26 figures, 12 tables, accepted for publication in A&A. The formation of high mass stars and clusters occurs in giant molecular clouds. Objects in evolved stages of massive star formation such as protostars, hot molecular cores, and ultracompact HII regions have been studied in more detail than earlier, colder objects. With this in mind, the APEX Telescope Large Area Survey of the whole inner Galactic plane at 870 micron (ATLASGAL) has been carried out to provide a global view of cold dust and star formation at submillimetre wavelengths. To derive kinematic distances to a large sample of ATLASGAL clumps we divided them into groups of sources, which are located close together, mostly within a radius of 2 pc, and have velocities in a similar range with a median velocity dispersion of ~ 1 km/s. Using NH3, N2H+ and CS velocities we calculate near and far kinematic distances to 296 groups of ATLASGAL sources in the first quadrant and 393 groups in the fourth quadrant. We analyse HI self-absorption and HI absorption to resolve the kinematic distance ambiguity. We obtain a scale height of ~ 28+/-2 pc and displacement below the Galactic midplane of ~ -7+/-1 pc. Within distances from 2 to 18 kpc ATLASGAL clumps have a broad range of gas masses with a median of 1050 solar masses and a wide distribution of radii with a median of 0.4 pc. Their distribution in galactocentric radii is correlated with spiral arms. Using a statistically significant ATLASGAL sample we derive a power-law exponent of -2.2+/-0.1 of the clump mass function. This is consistent with the slope derived for clusters and with that of the stellar initial mass function. Examining the power-law index for different galactocentric distances and various source samples shows that it is independent of environment and evolutionary phase. In the low-mass regime, it is found that the gas-phase abundances of C-bearing molecules in cold starless cores rapidly decrease with increasing density, as the molecules form mantles on dust grains. We study CO depletion in 102 massive clumps selected from the ATLASGAL 870 micron survey, and investigate its correlation with evolutionary stage and with the physical parameters of the sources. Moreover, we study the gradients in [12C]/[13C] and [18O]/[17O] isotopic ratios across the inner Galaxy, and the virial stability of the clumps. We use low-J emission lines of CO isotopologues and the dust continuum emission to infer the depletion factor fD. RATRAN one-dimensional models were also used to determine fD and to investigate the presence of depletion above a density threshold. The isotopic ratios and optical depth were derived with a Bayesian approach. We find a significant number of clumps with a large fD, up to ~20. Larger values are found for colder clumps, thus for earlier evolutionary phases. For massive clumps in the earliest stages of evolution we estimate the radius of the region where CO depletion is important to be a few tenths of a pc. Clumps are found with total masses derived from dust continuum emission up to ~20 times higher than the virial mass, especially among the less evolved sources. These large values may in part be explained by the presence of depletion: if the CO emission comes mainly from the low-density outer layers, the molecules may be subthermally excited, leading to an overestimate of the dust masses. CO depletion in high-mass clumps seems to behave as in the low-mass regime, with less evolved clumps showing larger values for the depletion than their more evolved counterparts, and increasing for denser sources. The APEX Telescope Large Area Survey of the Galaxy (ATLASGAL) is the largest and most sensitive systematic survey of the inner Galactic plane in the submillimetre wavelength regime. The observations were carried out with the Large APEX Bolometer Camera (LABOCA), an array of 295 bolometers observing at 870\,$\mu$m (345 GHz). Aim: In this research note we present the compact source catalogue for the 280\degr\ $ <\ell <$ 330\degr\ and 21\degr\ $ <\ell <$ 60\degr\ regions of this survey. Method: The construction of this catalogue was made with the source extraction routine \sex\ using the same input parameters and procedures used to analyse the inner Galaxy region presented in an earlier publication (i.e., 330\degr\ $ <\ell <$ 21\degr). Results: We have identified 3523 compact sources and present a catalogue of their properties. When combined with the regions already published this provides a comprehensive and unbiased database of ~10163 massive, dense clumps located across the inner Galaxy., Comment: Submitted to A&A. By matching infrared-selected, massive young stellar objects (MYSOs) and compact HII regions in the RMS survey to massive clumps found in the submillimetre ATLASGAL survey, we have identified ~1000 embedded young massive stars between 280\degr < $\ell$ < 350\degr and 10degr < $\ell$ < 60\degr with |b|<1.5degr. Combined with an existing sample of radio-selected methanol masers and compact HII regions, the result is a catalogue of ~1700 massive stars embedded within ~1300 clumps located across the inner Galaxy, containing three observationally distinct subsamples, methanol-maser, MYSO and HII-region associations, covering the most important tracers of massive star formation, thought to represent key stages of evolution. We find that massive star formation is strongly correlated with the regions of highest column density in spherical, centrally condensed clumps. We find no significant differences between the three samples in clump structure or the relative location of the embedded stars, which suggests that the structure of a clump is set before the onset of star formation, and changes little as the embedded object evolves towards the main sequence. There is a strong linear correlation between clump mass and bolometric luminosity, with the most massive stars forming in the most massive clumps. We find that the MYSO and HII-region subsamples are likely to cover a similar range of evolutionary stages and that the majority are near the end of their main accretion phase. We find few infrared-bright MYSOs associated with the most massive clumps, probably due to very short pre-main sequence lifetimes in the most luminous sources., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS: 33 pages, 24 figures and 9 tables. The present study aims at characterizing the massive star forming region G35.20N, which is found associated with at least one massive outflow and contains multiple dense cores, one of them recently found associated with a Keplerian rotating disk. We used ALMA to observe the G35.20N region in the continuum and line emission at 350 GHz. The observed frequency range covers tracers of dense gas (e.g. H13CO+, C17O), molecular outflows (e.g. SiO), and hot cores (e.g. CH3CN, CH3OH). The ALMA 870 um continuum emission map reveals an elongated dust structure (0.15 pc long and 0.013 pc wide) perpendicular to the large-scale molecular outflow detected in the region, and fragmented into a number of cores with masses 1-10 Msun and sizes 1600 AU. The cores appear regularly spaced with a separation of 0.023 pc. The emission of dense gas tracers such as H13CO+ or C17O is extended and coincident with the dust elongated structure. The three strongest dust cores show emission of complex organic molecules characteristic of hot cores, with temperatures around 200 K, and relative abundances 0.2-2x10^(-8) for CH3CN and 0.6-5x10^(-6) for CH3OH. The two cores with highest mass (cores A and B) show coherent velocity fields, with gradients almost aligned with the dust elongated structure. Those velocity gradients are consistent with Keplerian disks rotating about central masses of 4-18 Msun. Perpendicular to the velocity gradients we have identified a large-scale precessing jet/outflow associated with core B, and hints of an east-west jet/outflow associated with core A. The elongated dust structure in G35.20N is fragmented into a number of dense cores that may form massive stars. Cha-MMS1 was mapped in the NH_3(1,1) line and the 1.2 cm continuum using the Australia Telescope Compact Array, ATCA. The angular resolution of the ATCA observations is 7'' (~ 1000 AU), and the velocity resolution is 50 m s^{-1}. The core was also mapped with the 64-m Parkes telesope in the NH_3(1,1) and (2,2) lines. Observations from Herschel Space Observatory and Spitzer Space telescope were used to help interpretation. A compact high column density core with a steep velocity gradient is detected in ammonia, with a fractional ammonia abundance compatible with determinations towards other dense cores. The direction of the velocity gradient agrees with previous single-dish observations, and the overall velocity distribution can be interpreted as rotation. The rotation axis goes through the position of a compact far-infrared source detected by Spitzer and Herschel. The specific angular momentum of the core is typical for protostellar envelopes. A string of 1.2 cm continuum sources is tentatively detected near the rotation axis. The ammonia spectra suggest the presence of warm embedded gas in its vicinity. An hourglass-shaped structure is seen in ammonia at the cloud's average LSR velocity, also aligned with the rotation axis. Although this structure resembles a pair of outflow lobes the ammonia spectra show no indications of shocked gas. The observed ammonia structure mainly delineates the inner envelope around the central source. The velocity gradient is likely to originate in the angular momentum of the contracting core, although influence of the outflow from the neighbouring young star IRS4 is possibly visible on one side of the core. The tentative continuum detection and the indications of a warm background component near the rotation axis suggest that the core contains a deeply embedded outflow which may have been missed in previous single-dish CO surveys owing to beam dilution., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures. We present a complete sample of molecular clumps containing compact and ultra-compact (UC) HII regions between \ell=10\degr and 60\degr\ and $|b|<1\degr, identified by combining the the ATLASGAL submm and CORNISH radio continuum surveys with visual examination of archival infrared data. Our sample is complete to optically thin, compact and UCHII regions driven by a zero age main sequence star of spectral type B0 or earlier embedded within a 1,000 Msun clump. In total we identify 213 compact and UCHII regions, associated with 170 clumps. Unambiguous kinematic distances are derived for these clumps and used to estimate their masses and physical sizes, as well as the Lyman continuum fluxes and sizes of their embedded HII regions. We find a clear lower envelope for the surface density of molecular clumps hosting massive star formation of 0.05 g cm^{-2}, which is consistent with a similar sample of clumps associated with 6.7 GHz masers. The mass of the most massive embedded stars is closely correlated with the mass of their natal clump. Young B stars appear to be significantly more luminous in the ultraviolet than predicted by current stellar atmosphere models. The properties of clumps associated with compact and UCHII regions are very similar to those associated with 6.7 GHz methanol masers and we speculate that there is little evolution in the structure of the molecular clumps between these two phases. Finally, we identify a significant peak in the surface density of compact and UCHII regions associated with the W49A star-forming complex, noting that this complex is truly one of the most massive and intense regions of star formation in the Galaxy., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. Theoretical models suggest that massive stars form via disk-mediated accretion, with bipolar outflows playing a fundamental role. A recent study toward massive molecular outflows has revealed a decrease of the SiO line intensity as the object evolves. The present study aims at characterizing the variation of the molecular outflow properties with time, and at studying the SiO excitation conditions in outflows associated with massive YSOs. We used the IRAM30m telescope to map 14 massive star-forming regions in the SiO(2-1), SiO(5-4) and HCO+(1-0) outflow lines, and in several dense gas and hot core tracers. Hi-GAL data was used to improve the spectral energy distributions and the L/M ratio, which is believed to be a good indicator of the evolutionary stage of the YSO. We detect SiO and HCO+ outflow emission in all the sources, and bipolar structures in six of them. The outflow parameters are similar to those found toward other massive YSOs. We find an increase of the HCO+ outflow energetics as the object evolve, and a decrease of the SiO abundance with time, from 10^(-8) to 10^(-9). The SiO(5-4) to (2-1) line ratio is found to be low at the ambient gas velocity, and increases as we move to high velocities, indicating that the excitation conditions of the SiO change with the velocity of the gas (with larger densities and/or temperatures for the high-velocity gas component). The properties of the SiO and HCO+ outflow emission suggest a scenario in which SiO is largely enhanced in the first evolutionary stages, probably due to strong shocks produced by the protostellar jet. As the object evolves, the power of the jet would decrease and so does the SiO abundance. During this process, however, the material surrounding the protostar would have been been swept up by the jet, and the outflow activity, traced by entrained molecular material (HCO+), would increase with time., Comment: 31 pages, 10 figures and 5 tables (plus 2 figures and 3 tables in the appendix). We report on ALMA observations of continuum and molecular line emission with 0.4" resolution towards the high-mass star forming region G35.20-0.74 N. Two dense cores are detected in typical hot-core tracers, such as CH3CN, which reveal velocity gradients. In one of these cores, the velocity field can be fitted with an almost edge-on Keplerian disk rotating about a central mass of 18 Msun. This finding is consistent with the results of a recent study of the CO first overtone bandhead emission at 2.3mum towards G35.20-0.74 N. The disk radius and mass are >2500 au and 3 Msun. To reconcile the observed bolometric luminosity (3x10^4 Lsun) with the estimated stellar mass of 18 Msun, we propose that the latter is the total mass of a binary system., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics Letters

Despite increasing research in massive star formation, little is known about its earliest stages. Infrared Dark Clouds (IRDCs) are cold, dense and massive enough to harbour the sites of future high-mass star formation. But up to now, mainly small samples have been observed and analysed. To understand the physical conditions during the early stages of high-mass star formation, it is necessary to learn more about the physical conditions and stability in relatively unevolved IRDCs. Thus, for characterising IRDCs studies of large samples are needed. We investigate a complete sample of 218 northern hemisphere high-contrast IRDCs using the ammonia (1,1)- and (2,2)-inversion transitions. We detected ammonia (1,1)-inversion transition lines in 109 of our IRDC candidates. Using the data we were able to study the physical conditions within the star-forming regions statistically. We compared them with the conditions in more evolved regions which have been observed in the same fashion as our sample sources. Our results show that IRDCs have, on average, rotation temperatures of 15 K, are turbulent (with line width FWHMs around 2 km s$^{-1}$), have ammonia column densities on the order of $10^{14}$ cm$^{-2}$ and molecular hydrogen column densities on the order of $10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$. Their virial masses are between 100 and a few 1000 M$_\odot$. The comparison of bulk kinetic and potential energies indicate that the sources are close to virial equilibrium. IRDCs are on average cooler and less turbulent than a comparison sample of high-mass protostellar objects, and have lower ammonia column densities. Virial parameters indicate that the majority of IRDCs are currently stable, but are expected to collapse in the future., Comment: 21 pages, 11 figures, 7 tables. Using the 870-$\mu$m APEX Telescope Large Area Survey of the Galaxy (ATLASGAL), we have identified 577 submillimetre continuum sources with masers from the methanol multibeam (MMB) survey in the region $280\degr < \ell < 20\degr$; $|\,b\,| < 1.5\degr$. 94\,per\,cent of methanol masers in the region are associated with sub-millimetre dust emission. We estimate masses for ~450 maser-associated sources and find that methanol masers are preferentially associated with massive clumps. These clumps are centrally condensed, with envelope structures that appear to be scale-free, the mean maser position being offset from the peak column density by 0.0 \pm 4". Assuming a Kroupa initial mass function and a star-formation efficiency of ~30\,per\,cent, we find that over two thirds of the clumps are likely to form clusters with masses >20\,\msun. Furthermore, almost all clumps satisfy the empirical mass-size criterion for massive star formation. Bolometric luminosities taken from the literature for ~100 clumps range between ~100 and 10$^6$\,\lsun. This confirms the link between methanol masers and massive young stars for 90\,per\,cent of our sample. The Galactic distribution of sources suggests that the star-formation efficiency is significantly reduced in the Galactic-centre region, compared to the rest of the survey area, where it is broadly constant, and shows a significant drop in the massive star-formation rate density in the outer Galaxy. We find no enhancement in source counts towards the southern Scutum-Centaurus arm tangent at $\ell ~ 315\degr$, which suggests that this arm is not actively forming stars., Comment: 25 pages, 23 figures, 4 tables. Context. The APEX Telescope Large Area Survey of the Galaxy (ATLASGAL) is the first systematic survey of the inner Galactic plane in the sub-millimetre. The observations were carried out with the Large APEX Bolometer Camera (LABOCA), an array of 295 bolometers observing at 870 microns (345 GHz). Aims. Here we present a first version of the compact source catalogue extracted from this survey. This catalogue provides an unbiased database of dusty clumps in the inner Galaxy. Methods. The construction of this catalogue was made using the source extraction routine SExtractor. We have cross-associated the obtained sources with the IRAS and MSX catalogues, in order to constrain their nature. Results. We have detected 6639 compact sources in the range from 330 < l < 21 degrees and |b| < 1.5 degrees. The catalogue has a 99% completeness for sources with a peak flux above 6 sigma, which corresponds to a flux density of ~0.4 Jy/beam. The parameters extracted for sources with peak fluxes below the 6 sigma completeness threshold should be used with caution. Tests on simulated data find the uncertainty in the flux measurement to be ~12%, however, in more complex regions the flux values can be overestimated by a factor of 2 due to the additional background emission. Using a search radius of 30" we found that 40% of ATLASGAL compact sources are associated with an IRAS or MSX point source, but, ~50% are found to be associated with MSX 21 microns fluxes above the local background level, which is probably a lower limit to the actual number of sources associated with star formation. Conclusions. The APEX Telescope Large Area Survey: The Galaxy (ATLASGAL) is an unbiased continuum survey of the inner Galactic disk at 870 \mu m. It covers +/- 60 deg in Galactic longitude and aims to find all massive clumps at various stages of high-mass star formation in the inner Galaxy, particularly the earliest evolutionary phases. We aim to determine properties such as the gas kinetic temperature and dynamics of new massive cold clumps found by ATLASGAL. Most importantly, we derived their kinematical distances from the measured line velocities. We observed the ammonia (J,K) = (1,1) to (3,3) inversion transitions toward 862 clumps of a flux-limited sample of submm clumps detected by ATLASGAL and extracted 13CO (1-0) spectra from the Galactic Ring Survey (GRS). We determined distances for a subsample located at the tangential points (71 sources) and for 277 clumps whose near/far distance ambiguity is resolved. Most ATLASGAL clumps are cold with rotational temperatures from 10-30 K. They have a wide range of NH3 linewidths, which by far exceeds the thermal linewidth, as well as a broad distribution of high column densities with an NH3 abundance in the range of 5 to 30 * 10^{-8}. We found an enhancement of clumps at Galactocentric radii of 4.5 and 6 kpc. The high detection rate (87%) confirms ammonia as an excellent probe of the molecular content of the massive, cold clumps revealed by ATLASGAL. A clear trend of increasing rotational temperatures and linewidths with evolutionary stage is seen for source samples ranging from 24 \mu m dark clumps to clumps with embedded HII regions. The survey provides the largest ammonia sample of high-mass star forming clumps and thus presents an important repository for the characterization of statistical properties of the clumps and the selection of subsamples for detailed, high-resolution follow-up studies.

Four Class I maser sources were detected at 44, 84, and 95 GHz toward chemically rich outflows in the regions of low-mass star formation NGC 1333I4A, NGC 1333I2A, HH25, and L1157. One more maser was found at 36 GHz toward a similar outflow, NGC 2023. Flux densities of the newly detected masers are no more than 18 Jy, being much lower than those of strong masers in regions of high-mass star formation. The brightness temperatures of the strongest peaks in NGC 1333I4A, HH25, and L1157 at 44 GHz are higher than 2000 K, whereas that of the peak in NGC 1333I2A is only 176 K. However, rotational diagram analysis showed that the latter source is also a maser. The main properties of the newly detected masers are similar to those of Class I methanol masers in regions of massive star formation. The former masers are likely to be an extension of the latter maser population toward low luminosities of both the masers and the corresponding YSOs., Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure, Proc. The ATLASGAL 870mum continuum survey conducted with the APEX telescope is the first survey covering the whole inner Galactic plane (60deg>l>-60deg & b<1.5deg) in submm continuum emission tracing the cold dust of dense and young star-forming regions. Here, we present the overall distribution of sources within our Galactic disk. The submm continuum emission is confined to a narrow range around the galactic plane, but shifted on average by ~0.07deg below the plane. Source number counts show strong enhancements toward the Galactic center, the spiral arms and toward prominent star-forming regions. Comparing the distribution of ATLASGAL dust continuum emission to that of young intermediate- to high-mass young stellar objects (YSOs) derived from Spitzer data, we find similarities as well as differences. In particular, the distribution of submm dust continuum emission is significantly more confined to the plane than the YSO distribution (FWHM of 0.7 and 1.1deg, corresponding to mean physical scale heights of approximately 46 and 80pc, respectively). While this difference may partly be caused by the large extinction from the dense submm cores, gradual dispersal of stellar distributions after their birth could also contribute to this effect. We studied the abundance of HCN, H13CN, and HN13C in a sample of prestellar cores, in order to search for species associated with high density gas. We used the IRAM 30m radiotelescope to observe along the major and the minor axes of L1498, L1521E, and TMC 2, three cores chosen on the basis of their CO depletion properties. We mapped the J=1-0 transition of HCN, H13CN, and HN13C towards the source sample plus the J=1-0 transition of N2H+ and the J=2-1 transition of C18O in TMC 2. We used two different radiative transfer codes, making use of recent collisional rate calculations, in order to determine more accurately the excitation temperature, leading to a more exact evaluation of the column densities and abundances. We find that the optical depths of both H13CN(1-0) and HN13C(1-0) are non-negligible, allowing us to estimate excitation temperatures for these transitions in many positions in the three sources. The observed excitation temperatures are consistent with recent computations of the collisional rates for these species and they correlate with hydrogen column density inferred from dust emission. We conclude that HCN and HNC are relatively abundant in the high density zone, n(H2) about 10^5 cm-3, where CO is depleted. The relative abundance [HNC]/[HCN] differs from unity by at most 30 per cent consistent with chemical expectations. The three hyperfine satellites of HCN(1-0) are optically thick in the regions mapped, but the profiles become increasingly skewed to the blue (L1498 and TMC 2) or red (L1521E) with increasing optical depth suggesting absorption by foreground layers., Comment: 13 pages, 19 figures, to be published in Astronomy and Astrophysics

Some theoretical models propose that O-B stars form via accretion, in a similar fashion to low-mass stars. Jet-driven molecular outflows play an important role in this scenario, and their study can help to understand the process of high-mass star formation and the different evolutionary phases involved. Observations towards low-mass protostars so far favour an evolutionary picture in which jets are always associated with Class 0 objects while more evolved Class I/II objects show less evidence of powerful jets. The present study aims at checking whether an analogous picture can be found in the high-mass case. The IRAM 30-m telescope (Spain) has been used to perform single-pointing SiO(2-1) and (3-2) observations towards a sample of 57 high-mass molecular clumps in different evolutionary stages. Continuum data at different wavelengths, from mid-IR to 1.2 mm, have been gathered to build the spectral energy distributions of all the clumps and estimate their bolometric luminosities. SiO emission at high velocities, characteristic of molecular jets, is detected in 88% of our sources, a very high detection rate indicating that there is ongoing star formation activity in most of the sources of our sample. The SiO(2-1) luminosity drops with L/M, which suggests that jet activity declines as time evolves. This represents the first clear evidence of a decrease of SiO outflow luminosity with time in a homogeneous sample of high-mass molecular clumps in different evolutionary stages. W49A is a giant molecular cloud which harbors some of the most luminous embedded clusters in the Galaxy. However, the explanation for this starburst-like phenomenon is still under debate. Methods. We investigated large-scale Spitzer mid-infrared images together with a Galatic Ring Survey 13CO J = 1-0 image, complemented with higher resolution (~ 11 arcsec) 13CO J = 2-1 and C18O J = 2-1 images over a ~ 15 x 13 pc^2 field obtained with the IRAM 30m telescope. Two expanding shells have been identified in the mid-infrared images, and confirmed in the position-velocity diagrams made from the 13CO J = 2-1 and C18O J = 2-1 data. The mass of the averaged expanding shell, which has an inner radius of ~ 3.3 pc and a thickness of ~ 0.41 pc, is about 1.9 x 10^4 M*. The total kinetic energy of the expanding shells is estimated to be ~ 10^49 erg which is probably provided by a few massive stars, whose radiation pressure and/or strong stellar winds drive the shells. The expanding shells are likely to have a common origin close to the two ultracompact Hii regions (source O and source N), and their expansion speed is estimated to be ~ 5 km/s, resulting in an age of ~ 3-7 x 10^5 years. In addition, on larger (~ 35 x 50 pc^2) scales, remnants of two gas ejections have been identified in the 13CO J = 1 - 0 data. Both ejections seem to have the same center as the expanding shells with a total energy of a few times 10^50 erg. The main driving mechanism for the gas ejections is unclear, but likely related to the mechanism which triggers the starburst in W49A.

We attempt to determine the nature of the bubbles observed by Spitzer in the Galactic plane, mainly to establish if possible their association with massive stars. We take advantage of the very simple morphology of these objects to search for star formation triggered by HII regions, and to estimate the importance of this mode of star formation. We consider a sample of 102 bubbles detected by Spitzer-GLIMPSE, and catalogued by Churchwell et al.(2006). We use mid-infrared and radio-continuum public data to discuss their nature. We use the ATLASGAL survey at 870 micron to search for dense neutral material collected on their borders. Results: We find that 86% of the bubbles contain ionized gas detected by means of its radio-continuum emission at 20-cm. Thus, most of the bubbles observed at 8.0 micron enclose HII regions ionized by O-B2 stars. Ninety-eight percent of the bubbles exhibit 24 micron emission in their central regions. The ionized regions at the center of the 8.0 micron bubbles seem to be devoid of PAHs but contain hot dust. Among the 65 regions for which the angular resolution of the observations is high enough to resolve the spatial distribution of cold dust at 870 micron, we find that 40% are surrounded by cold dust, and that another 28% contain interacting condensations. The former are good candidates for the collect and collapse process, as they display an accumulation of dense material at their borders. The latter are good candidates for the compression of pre-existing condensations by the ionized gas. Eighteen bubbles exhibit associated ultracompact HII regions and/or methanol masers in the direction of dust condensations adjacent to their ionization fronts. We present single-dish (sub)millimeter observations of gas and dust in the Galactic high-mass star-forming region G19.61-0.23, with the aim of studying the large-scale properties and physical conditions of the molecular gas across the region. The final aim is to compare the large-scale (about 100 pc) properties with the small-scale (about 3 pc) properties and to consider possible implications for extragalactic studies. We have mapped CO isotopologues in the J=1-0 transition using the FCRAO-14m telescope and the J=2-1 transition using the IRAM-30m telescope. We have also used data from the ATLASGAL survey and from the BU-FCRAO Galactic Ring Survey, as well as the Spitzer infrared Galactic plane surveys GLIMPSE and MIPSGAL to characterize the star-formation activity within the molecular clouds. We reveal a population of molecular clumps in the 13CO(1-0) emission. Our analysis of the 13CO suggests that the virial parameter (ratio of kinetic to gravitational energy) varies over an order of magnitude between clumps that are unbound and some that are apparently "unstable". This conclusion is independent of whether they show evidence of ongoing star formation. We find that the majority of ATLASGAL sources have MIPSGAL counterparts with luminosities in the range 10^4 - 5 10^4 Lsun and are presumably forming relatively massive stars. We compare our results with previous extragalactic studies of the nearby spiral galaxies M31 and M33; and the blue compact dwarf galaxy Henize2-10. We find that the main giant molecular cloud surrounding G19.61-0.23 has physical properties typical for Galactic GMCs and which are comparable to the GMCs in M31 and M33. However, the GMC studied here shows smaller surface densities and masses than the clouds identified in Henize2-10 and associated with super star cluster formation., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

A survey of young bipolar outflows in regions of low-to-intermediate-mass star formation has been carried out in two class I methanol maser transitions: 7_0-6_1A+ at 44 GHz and 4_{-1}-3_0E at 36 GHz. We detected narrow features towards NGC 1333I2A, NGC 1333I4A, HH25MMS, and L1157 at 44 GHz, and towards NGC 2023 at 36 GHz. Flux densities of the lines detected at 44 GHz are no higher than 11 Jy and the relevant source luminosities are about 10^{22} erg s{-1}, which is much lower than those of strong masers in high-mass star formation regions. No emission was found towards 39 outflows. All masers detected at 44 GHz are located in clouds with methanol column densities of the order of or larger than a few x 10^{14} cm$^{-2}. The upper limits for the non-detections are typically of the order of 3--5 Jy. We study the abundance of CCH in prestellar cores both because of its role in the chemistry and because it is a potential probe of the magnetic field. We also consider the non-LTE behaviour of the N=1-0 and N=2-1 transitions of CCH and improve current estimates of the spectroscopic constants of CCH. We used the IRAM 30m radiotelescope to map the N=1-0 and N=2-1 transitions of CCH towards the prestellar cores L1498 and CB246. Towards CB246, we also mapped the 1.3 mm dust emission, the J=1-0 transition of N2H+ and the J=2-1 transition of C18O. We used a Monte Carlo radiative transfer program to analyse the CCH observations of L1498. We derived the distribution of CCH column densities and compared with the H2 column densities inferred from dust emission. We find that while non-LTE intensity ratios of different components of the N=1-0 and N=2-1 lines are present, they are of minor importance and do not impede CCH column density determinations based upon LTE analysis. Moreover, the comparison of our Monte-Carlo calculations with observations suggest that the non-LTE deviations can be qualitatively understood. For L1498, our observations in conjunction with the Monte Carlo code imply a CCH depletion hole of radius 9 x 10^{16} cm similar to that found for other C-containing species. We briefly discuss the significance of the observed CCH abundance distribution. Finally, we used our observations to provide improved estimates for the rest frequencies of all six components of the CCH(1-0) line and seven components of CCH(2-1). Based on these results, we compute improved spectroscopic constants for CCH. We have searched for massive molecular outflows in a sample of high-mass star forming regions, and we have characterised both the outflow properties and those of their associated molecular clumps. With a sample composed largely of more luminous objects than previous ones, this work complements analogous surveys performed by other authors by adding the missing highest luminosity sources. The sample under study has been selected so as to favour the earliest evolutionary phases of star formation, and is composed of very luminous objects (L_bol > 2x10^4 L_sun and up to ~10^6 L_sun), possibly containing O-type stars. Each source has been mapped in 13CO(2-1) and C18O(2-1) with the IRAM-30m telescope on Pico Veleta (Spain). The whole sample shows high-velocity wings in the 13CO(2-1) spectra, indicative of outflowing motions. In addition, we have obtained outflow maps in 9 of our 11 sources, which display well-defined blue and/or red lobes. For these sources, the outflow parameters have been derived from the line wing 13CO(2-1) emission. An estimate of the clump masses from the C18O(2-1) emission is also provided and found to be comparable to the virial masses. From a comparison between our results and those found by other authors at lower masses, it is clear that the outflow mechanical force increases with the bolometric luminosity of the clump and with the ionising photon rate of the associated HII regions, indicating that high-mass stars drive more powerful outflows. A tight correlation between outflow mass and clump mass is also found. Molecular outflows are found to be as common in massive star forming regions as in low-mass star forming regions. The rate of star formation both in the Galaxy and in external galaxies should be related to the physical properties of the molecular clouds from which stars form. This is expected for the starbursts found both in irregular galaxies and in some mergers. The dwarf galaxy Henize 2-10 is particularly interesting in this context as it shows a number of newly formed Super Star Clusters (SSCs) associated with a very rich molecular environment. We present a high angular resolution study of the molecular gas associated with the SSCs with the aim of deriving the physical properties of the parent molecular clouds. The final goal is to test the expectation that the formation of SSCs requires exceptionally dense and massive clouds. We have used the Submillimeter Array with an angular resolution of 1.9 X 1.3 to map the J=2-1 transition of CO in Henize 2-10. Supplementary measurements of HCN(J=1-0), 13CO(J=2-1) and millimeter continuum were obtained with the APEX, IRAM-30m and SEST single dish telescopes. Our single dish observations confirm the association of the newly formed SSCs in Henize 2-10 with dense molecular gas. Our interferometric observations resolve the CO(2-1) emission in several giant molecular clouds. Overall the molecular gas accounts for approximately half of the mass in the central regions of Henize 2-10. Although we find indications that the molecular clouds associated with the formation of SSCs in Henize 2-10 are massive and dense, the tracer we used (CO) and the linear resolution of our observations (60 X 80 pc) are still not adequate to test the expectation that exceptionally dense and massive cores are required for SSCs formation., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, 3 tables; Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

(Abridged) Studying continuum emission from interstellar dust is essential to locating and characterizing the highest density regions in the interstellar medium. In particular, the early stages of massive star formation remain poorly understood. Our goal is to produce a large-scale, systematic database of massive pre- and proto-stellar clumps in the Galaxy, to understand how and under what conditions star formation takes place. A well characterized sample of star-forming sites will deliver an evolutionary sequence and a mass function of high-mass, star-forming clumps. This systematic survey at submm wavelengths also represents a preparatory work for Herschel and ALMA. The APEX telescope is ideally located to observe the inner Milky Way. The Large APEX Bolometer Camera (LABOCA) is a 295-element bolometer array observing at 870 microns, with a beam size of 19". Taking advantage of its large field of view (11.4') and excellent sensitivity, we started an unbiased survey of the Galactic Plane, with a noise level of 50-70 mJy/beam: the APEX Telescope Large Area Survey of the Galaxy (ATLASGAL). As a first step, we covered 95 sq. deg. These data reveal 6000 compact sources brighter than 0.25 Jy, as well as extended structures, many of them filamentary. About two thirds of the compact sources have no bright infrared counterpart, and some of them are likely to correspond to the precursors of (high-mass) proto-stars or proto-clusters. Other compact sources harbor hot cores, compact HII regions or young embedded clusters. Assuming a typical distance of 5 kpc, most sources are clumps smaller than 1 pc with masses from a few 10 to a few 100 M_sun. We wish to understand the reasons for the strong variability of H2O masers in circumstellar shells of late-type stars. We monitored RX Boo and SV Peg in the 22-GHz maser line of water vapour with single-dish telescopes. The monitoring period covered two decades for RX Boo (1987 -- 2007) and 12 years for SV Peg (1990 -- 1995, 2000 -- 2007). In addition, maps were obtained of RX Boo with the Very Large Array over several years. We find that most of the emission in the circumstellar shell of RX Boo is located in an incomplete ring with an inner radius of 91 mas (15 AU). A velocity gradient is found in a NW--SE direction. The maser region can be modelled as a shell with a thickness of 22 AU, which is only partially filled. The gas crossing time is 16.5 years. The ring-like structure and the velocity gradient remained stable for at least 11 years, while the maser line profiles varied strongly. This suggests that the spatial asymmetry is not accidental, so that either the mass loss process or the maser excitation conditions in RX Boo are not spherically symmetric. The strong variability of the maser spectral features is mainly due to incoherent intensity fluctuations of maser emission spots, which have lifetimes of the order of 1 year. We found no correlation between the optical and the maser variability in either star. The variability properties of the SV Peg masers do not differ substantially from those of RX Boo. There were fewer spectral features present, and the range of variations was narrower. The maser was active on the >10-Jy level only 1990 -- 1992 and 2006/2007. We present observations with the IRAM Plateau de Bure Interferometer of three QSOs at z>5 aimed at detecting molecular gas in their host galaxies as traced by CO transitions. CO (5-4) is detected in SDSSJ033829.31+002156.3 at z=5.0267, placing it amongst the most distant sources detected in CO. The CO emission is unresolved with a beam size of ~1", implying that the molecular gas is contained within a compact region, less than ~3kpc in radius. We infer an upper limit on the dynamical mass of the CO emitting region of ~3x10^10 Msun/sin(i)^2. The comparison with the Black Hole mass inferred from near-IR data suggests that the BH-to-bulge mass ratio in this galaxy is significantly higher than in local galaxies. From the CO luminosity we infer a mass reservoir of molecular gas as high as M(H2)=2.4x10^10 Msun, implying that the molecular gas accounts for a significant fraction of the dynamical mass. When compared to the star formation rate derived from the far-IR luminosity, we infer a very short gas exhaustion timescale (~10^7 yrs), comparable to the dynamical timescale. CO is not detected in the other two QSOs (SDSSJ083643.85+005453.3 and SDSSJ163033.90+401209.6) and upper limits are given for their molecular gas content. When combined with CO observations of other type 1 AGNs, spanning a wide redshift range (05) the CO luminosity appears to saturate. We have observed several emission lines of two Nitrogen-bearing (C2H5CN and C2H3CN) and two Oxygen-bearing (CH3OCH3 and HCOOCH3) molecules towards a sample of well-known hot molecular cores (HMCs) in order to check whether the chemical differentiation seen in the Orion-HMC and W3(H_2O) between O- and N-bearing molecules is a general property of HMCs. With the IRAM-30m telescope we have observed 12 HMCs in 21 bands, centered at frequencies from 86250 to 258280 MHz. The rotational temperatures obtained range from ~100 to ~150 K in these HMCs. Single Gaussian fits performed to unblended lines show a marginal difference in the line peak velocities of the C2H5CN and CH3OCH3 lines, indicating a possible spatial separation between the region traced by the two molecules. On the other hand, neither the linewidths nor the rotational temperatures and column densities confirm such a result. By comparing the abundance ratio of the pair C2H5CN/C2H3CN with the predictions of theoretical models, we derive that the age of our cores ranges between 3.7 and 5.9x10^{4} yrs. The abundances of C2H5CN and C2H3CN are strongly correlated, as expected from theory which predicts that C2H3CN is formed through gas phase reactions involving C2H5CN. A correlation is also found between the abundances of C2H3CN and CH3OCH3, and C2H5CN and CH3OCH3. We have studied the chemistry of nitrogen--bearing species during the initial stages of protostellar collapse, with a view to explaining the observed longevity of N2H+ and NH3 and the high levels of deuteration of these species. We followed the chemical evolution of a medium comprising gas and dust as it underwent free--fall gravitational collapse. Chemical processes which determine the relative populations of the nuclear spin states of molecules and molecular ions were included explicitly, as were reactions which lead ultimately to the deuteration of the nitrogen--containing species N2H+ and NH3. The freeze-out of `heavy' molecules onto grains was taken into account. We found that the timescale required for the nitrogen--containing species to attain their steady--state values was much larger than the free--fall time and even comparable with the probable lifetime of the precursor molecular cloud. However, it transpires that the chemical evolution of the gas during gravitational collapse is insensitive to its initial composition. If we suppose that the grain--sticking probabilities of atomic nitrogen and oxygen are both less than unity (S less than 0.3), we find that the observed differential freeze--out of nitrogen- and carbon--bearing species can be reproduced by the model of free--fall collapse when a sufficiently large grain radius (a_{g}= 0.5 micron) is adopted. Furthermore, the results of our collapse model are consistent with the high levels of deuteration of N2H+ and NH3 which have been observed in L1544 providing that 0.5

[Abridged] We present a molecular survey of the starless cores L1498 and L1517B. These cores have been selected for their relative isolation and close-to-round shape, and they have been observed in a number of lines of 13 molecular species (4 already presented in the first part of this series): CO, CS, N2H+, NH3, CH3OH, SO, C3H2, HC3N, C2S, HCN, H2CO, HCO+, and DCO+. Using a physical model of core structure and a Monte Carlo radiative transfer code, we determine for each core a self-consistent set abundances that fits simultaneously the observed radial profile of integrated intensity and the emergent spectrum towards the core center (for abundant species, optically thin isopologues are used). From this work, we find that L1498 and L1517B have similar abundance patterns, with most species suffering a significant drop toward the core center. This occurs for CO, CS, CH3OH, SO, C3H2, HC3N, C2S, HCN, H2CO, HCO+, and DCO+, which we fit with profiles having a sharp central hole. The size of this hole varies with molecule: DCO+, HCN, and HC3N have the smallest holes while SO, C2S and CO have the largest holes. Only N2H+ and NH3 are present in the gas phase at the core centers. From the different behavior of molecules, we select SO, C2S, and CH3OH as the most sensitive tracers of molecular depletion. Comparing our abundance determinations with the predictions from current chemical models we find order of magnitude discrepancies. Disks are a natural outcome of the star formation process in which they play a crucial role. Luminous, massive stars of spectral type earlier than B4 are likely to be those that benefit most from the existence of accretion disks, which may significantly reduce the effect of radiation pressure on the accreting material. The scope of the present contribution is to review the current knowledge about disks in young high-mass (proto)stars and discuss their implications. The issues of disk stability and lifetime are also discussed. We conclude that for protostars of less than ~20 solar masses, disks with mass comparable to that of the central star are common. Above this limit the situation is unclear and there are no good examples of proto O4-O8 stars surrounded by accretion disks: in these objects only huge, massive, toroidal, non-equilibrium rotating structures are seen. We have studied the evolution of molecular gas during the early stages of protostellar collapse. In addition to allowing for the freeze out of `heavy' species on to grains, we have computed the variation of population densities of the different nuclear spin states of ``tracer'' molecular ions such as H2D+ and D2H+. Processes which determine the relative populations of the nuclear spin states of molecules and molecular ions have received much less attention in the literature than those involved in their deuteration; but in fact the former processes are as significant as the latter and often involve the same reactants. We find that the ortho:para ratio of some species, e.g. H2D+, vary considerably as the density increases. Because the dynamical timescale is much shorter than some of the chemical timescales, there can be large departures of the predictions of the free--fall model from the steady state solution at the same density and temperature. In the case of H2, it seems unlikely that the steady state value of the ortho:para ratio is attained before protostellar collapse from the progenitor molecular cloud commences. Values of the ortho:para H2 ratio much higher than in steady state, which would prevail in ``young'' molecular clouds, are found to be inconsistent with high levels of deuteration of the gas. The internal energy of ortho--H2 acts as a reservoir of chemical energy which inhibits the deuteration of H3+ and hence of other species, such as N2H+ and NH3. In essence, the deuteration of molecular ions and molecules is sensitive to the ortho:para H2 ratio and hence to the chemical and thermal history of the parent molecular cloud., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures

We report the detection of the 2P_3/2 -> 2P_1/2 fine-structure line of C+ at 157.74 micron in SDSSJ114816.64+525150.3 (hereafter J1148+5251), the most distant known quasar, at z=6.42, using the IRAM 30-meter telescope. This is the first detection of the [CII] line at high redshift, and also the first detection in a Hyperluminous Infrared Galaxy (L_FIR > 10^13 Lsun). The [CII] line is detected at a significance level of 8 sigma and has a luminosity of 4.4 x 10^9 Lsun. The L_[CII]/L_FIR ratio is 2 x 10^-4, about an order of magnitude smaller than observed in local normal galaxies and similar to the ratio observed in local Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies. The [CII] line luminosity indicates that the host galaxy of this quasar is undergoing an intense burst of star formation with an estimated rate of ~3000 Msun/yr. The detection of C+ in SDSS J1148+5251 suggests a significant enrichment of metals at z ~ 6 (age of the universe ~870 Myr), although the data are consistent with a reduced carbon to oxygen ratio as expected from chemical evolutionary models of the early phases of galaxy formation., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, accepted by A&A Letters

We present high angular resolution images of the H$_2$ 1-0 S(1) line emission obtained with the Son of ISAAC (SOFI) at the New Technology Telescope (NTT) of the Horsehead nebula. These observations are analysed in combination with H$\alpha$ line emission, aromatic dust, CO and dust continuum emissions. The Horsehead nebula illuminated by the O9.5V star $\sigma$ Ori ($\chi \sim$ 60) presents a typical photodissociation region (PDR) viewed nearly edge-on and offers an ideal opportunity to study the gas density structure of a PDR. The H$_2$ fluorescent emission observations reveal extremely sharp and bright filaments associated with the illuminated edge of the nebula which spatially coincides with the aromatic dust emission. Analysis of the H$_2$ fluorescent emission, sensitive to both the far-UV radiation field and the gas density, in conjunction with the aromatic dust and H$\alpha$ line emission, brings new constraints on the illumination conditions and the gas density in the outer PDR region. Furthermore, combination of this data with millimeter observations of CO and dust continuum emission allows us to trace the penetration of the far-UV radiation field into the cloud and probe the gas density structure throughout the PDR. From comparison with PDR model calculations, we find that i) the gas density follows a steep gradient at the cloud edge, with a scale length of 0.02 pc (or 10'') and $n_H\sim 10^4$ and $10^5$ cm$^{-3}$ in the H$_2$ emitting and inner cold molecular layers respectively, and ii) this density gradient model is essentially a constant pressure model, with $P\sim$4 $10^6$ K cm$^{-3}$. The constraints derived here on the gas density profile are important for the study of physical and chemical processes in PDRs and provide new insight into the evolution of interstellar clouds., Comment: To be published in A&A

(Abridged) We have observed CS and C17O lines, and 1.2 mm cont. emission towards a sample of 130 high-mass protostellar candidates with DEC<-30 deg. This is the first step of the southern extension of a project started more than a decade ago aimed at the identification of massive protostellar candidates. We selected from the IRAS PSC 429 sources which potentially are compact molecular clouds. The sample is divided into two groups: the 298 sources with [25-12]>0.57 and [60-12]>1.30 we call 'High' sources, the remaining 131 we call 'Low' sources. In this paper, we check the association with dense gas and dust in 130 'Low' sources. We find a detection rate of ca. 85% in CS, demonstrating a tight association with dense molecular clumps. Among the sources detected in CS, ca. 76% have also been detected in C17O and ca. 93% in the 1.2 mm cont. Mm-cont. maps show the presence of clumps with diameters 0.2-2 pc and masses from a few Msun to 10^5 Msun; H2 volume densities lie between ca. 10^{4.5} and 10^{5.5} cm^{-3}. The L(bol) are 10^3-10^6 Lsun, consistent with embedded high-mass objects. Based on our results and those found in the literature for other samples, we conclude that our sources are massive objects probably in a stage prior to the formation of an HII region. We propose a scenario in which 'High' and 'Low' sources are both made of a massive clump hosting a high-mass protostellar candidate and a nearby stellar cluster. The difference might be due to the fact that the IRAS 12mu flux, the best discriminant between the two groups, is dominated by the emission from the cluster in 'Lows' and from the massive protostellar object in 'Highs'., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astron. & Astroph.; 34 pages (incl. 14 figures and 8 tables)

We have undertaken a survey of N2H+ and N2D+ towards 31 low-mass starless cores using the IRAM 30m telescope. Our main objective has been to determine the abundance ratio of N2D+ and N2H+ towards the nuclei of these cores and thus to obtain estimates of the degree of deuterium enrichment, a symptom of advanced chemical evolution according to current models. We find that the N(N2D+)/N(N2H+) ratio is larger in more "centrally concentrated cores" with larger peak H2 and N2H+ column density than the sample mean. The deuterium enrichment in starless cores is presently ascribed to depletion of CO in the high density (> 3*10^4 cm-3) core nucleus. To substantiate this picture, we compare our results with observations in dust emission at 1.2 mm and in two transitions of C18O. We find a good correlation between deuterium fractionation and N(C18O)/N(H2) for the nuclei of 14 starless cores. We, thus, identified a set of properties that characterize the most evolved, or "pre-stellar", starless cores. These are: higher N2H+ and N2D+ column densities, higher N(N2D+)/N(N2H+), more pronounced CO depletion, broader N2H+ lines with infall asymmetry, higher central H2 column densities and a more compact density profile than in the average core. We conclude that this combination of properties gives a reliable indication of the evolutionary state of the core. Seven cores in our sample (L1521F, OphD, L429, L694, L183, L1544 and TMC2) show the majority of these features and thus are believed to be closer to forming a protostar than are the other members of our sample. Finally, we note that the subsample of Taurus cores behaves more homogeneously than the total sample, an indication that the external environment could play an important role in the core evolution., Comment: 42 pages, 17 figures, 12 tables, published in ApJ.
