This chapter introduces a number of specific concepts that help better understand stakeholder engagement from an integrated project delivery (IPD) perspective and a growing interest in stakeholder influence and impact beyond the general management field to its application to project work. It provides insights into stakeholder engagement targeted at projects and more specifically how it may be applied in IPD contexts. The chapter discusses how digitisation has revolutionised how stakeholders can enhance collaboration between stakeholders to visualise a project output, and through that visualisation to be able to frame constraints and opportunities more effectively and to re-frame project objectives and requirements accordingly. It explains how stakeholder engagement was undertaken on several Finnish projects with critical evaluation of how that process was carried out and how it may have been improved when using a more integrated project delivery approach.

Metadata only record Adopting a new paradigm for natural resource and environmental policy that emphasizes continuous change, adaptation and learning demands a new approach to evaluation to enable improvements in the way these initiatives contribute to sustainable resource use. Evaluation is fundamental to identifying change, supporting an adaptive approach that is flexible enough to meet the challenge of change, and enabling learning at individual, community, institutional and policy levels. Based on a consideration of changing approaches to natural resource management (NRM) policy and observations and experiences in the practical assessment of on-the-ground initiatives, the authors develop a set of principles for evaluation in NRM that: (a) addresses evaluation from a systems perspective, (b) links objective to consequence, (c) considers the fundamental assumptions and hypotheses that underpin core policy or program objectives, (d) is grounded in the natural resource, policy/institutional, economic, socio-cultural and technological contexts of implementation in practice, (e) establishes practical and valid evaluation criteria by which change can be monitored and assessed, (f) involves methodological pluralism including both quantitative and qualitative methods to ensure rigour and comprehensiveness in assessment, and (g) integrates different disciplinary perspectives (i.e. social, economic, environmental, policy and technological). The paper develops a systems-based evaluation framework that incorporates these principles and also recognises the multiple levels and nested nature of NRM policy, namely: problem characterisation, policy formulation and intent, program logic, and on-ground implementation. Finally, we demonstrate its utility through application to three contrasting Australian case studies: a community-based Integrated Catchment Management policy implementation; a resource information delivery system; and the development of a Decision Support System. ©2001 Academic Press

A mouse model of spotted fever group rickettsiosis, in which disease results from disseminated rickettsial infection of endothelial cells and vascular damage, was developed by intravenous inoculation of 6- to 8-week-old, male, Balb/c mice with Rickettsia australis. Animals developed progressively severe vasculitis, interstitial pneumonia, and multifocal hepatic necrosis. These lesions correlated with early disseminated infection of endothelial cells followed by growth and invasion of rickettsiae into perivascular cells. The dose of 2 x 10(6) organisms was uniformly lethal. Serum interleukin- (IL) 1, IL-6, and interferon (IFN) increased by day 3 and tumor necrosis factor (TNF) on day 5. TNF, IL-6, and IFN declined on day 7. Spleen cells responded to Rickettsia australis antigen by producing IFN, TNF, IL-1, and IL-6 on day 5, followed by lower quantities of these cytokines on day 7. Despite the production of antibodies, IFN, TNF, IL-1, and IL-6, a lethal outcome occurred frequently. A decreased ability to secrete IL-2 suggests an element of infection-associated immunosuppression.
