2. Wake County Public School System Student Survey Results, 2022-23

Abstract

The Wake County Public School System (WCPSS) conducts a student survey in the spring of each year to determine the level of student engagement in and out of the classroom. Students who actively participate in their learning process generally experience higher academic achievement (Wang & Hofkens, 2020). The survey contains items from the Student Engagement Instrument (Appleton et al., 2006), which measures students' level of engagement in school on five domains: Teacher-Student Relationships, Control and Relevance of School Work, Peer Support for Learning, Future Aspirations and Goals, and Family Support and Learning. Additional items to measure three other domains were added to include Rigor, Civic Engagement, and Creativity. The survey results from 2022-23 can be used to identify areas of strengths and weaknesses so schools can proactively determine whether the environment is meeting the needs of students (Huang, 2019). The purpose of this report is to highlight key district findings from the 2022-23 survey administration. A total of 33,643 eligible students in grades 5-12 (33.3%) from 188 schools completed the survey during the administration period. The report examines survey domains, presents item-level results by grade level, and concludes by exploring item-level results across various student groups. Overall, most students reported positive perceptions of their school experience, although middle school students had lower rates of agreement on four of the eight student engagement domains; Teacher-Student Relationships, Control and Relevance of School Work, Civic Engagement, and Creativity. Among all domains, the highest percent agreement was for Future Aspirations and Goals and Family Support and Learning, both of which were more than 90%. Analysis by student groups revealed that African-American students had lower percent agreement for approximately 25% of the items in the survey. Detailed results are summarized in the subsequent sections of this report.

Abstract

We present a comprehensive analysis of the observed Stellar-to-Halo mass relationship (SHMR) spanning redshifts from 0.2 to 4.5. This was enabled through galaxy clustering and abundance measurements from two large (effective area ~ 1.61 deg^2) and homogeneously prepared photometric catalogs - UltraVISTA ultra-deep stripes DR3 (COSMOS) and FENIKS v1 (UDS). To translate these measurements into the SHMR, we introduce a novel halo occupation distribution (HOD) fitting approach (``smooth-$z$'') whereby HOD parameters between neighboring z-bins are connected via physically motivated continuity (smoothing) priors. As a result, the high constraining power at z <~ 2, due to a much wider dynamical range in stellar mass (~ 3 dex), helps constrain the SHMR at z >~ 2, where that range shrinks down to <~ 1 dex. We find that the halo mass is tightly coupled to star formation: the halo mass with peak integrated star-forming efficiency (SFE), M_h^peak remains constant within ~ 10^12.2 - 10^12.4 Msolar throughout the redshifts probed. Furthermore, we show that if we had relied on COSMOS alone (as opposed to COSMOS+UDS), as has been done by many preceding studies, M_h^peak would be systematically lower by up to ~0.15 dex at z < 1.5, highlighting the importance of mitigating cosmic variance. Finally, for the first time, we show how the SFE evolves with redshift as halos grow in mass along their progenitor merger trees, instead of at fixed halo masses., Comment: Submitted to ApJ. 36 pages, 18 figures. Abstract

We give a refined description of the dominant spectrum of a non-local operator that models growth and equal mitosis of cells. More precisely we look at the spectrum in half planes at the right hand side of the first accumulation point of eigenvalues and give criteria on the weight of weighted $L^1$ spaces for this spectrum to be made of explicit simple eigenvalues. The method relies on a high order long time asymptotic expansion of the solutions to the associated evolution equation obtained in [Zaidi, van Brunt, Wake, Proc. A, R. Soc. Lond., 2015] combined with a Weyl theorem taken from [Mischler, Scher, Ann. Inst. Henri Poincar\'e, Anal. Non Lin\'eaire, 2016].

6. Longitudinal Relationships between Financial Stress, Career Related Optimism, and Psychological Distress during Emerging Adulthood in Australia

Abstract

The current study examined financial stress, career-related optimism, and psychological distress from the age of 19 (2013; n = 5,787), until the age of 25 (2019; n = 2,933) using the Longitudinal Surveys of Australia Youth (2009 cohort). Longitudinal mediation using latent growth curve modeling observed trajectories of change across young adulthood, whereby financial stress and career-related optimism decreased, while psychological distress increased across time. The inclusion of regression parameters in the analyses indicated that participants with shallower reductions in financial stress reported steeper increases in distress, and this effect was mediated by shifting career-related optimism. With ongoing financial pressures around the world disproportionately impacting young people, our work further illustrates how these stressors can shape the life course via shifts in vocational optimism and subsequent mental health. Moving forward, policies and timely clinical interventions should be implemented to assist young adults in navigating this pivotal developmental period.

Abstract

Video action localization aims to find the timings of specific actions from a long video. Although existing learning-based approaches have been successful, they require annotating videos, which comes with a considerable labor cost. This paper proposes a learning-free, open-vocabulary approach based on emerging off-the-shelf vision-language models (VLMs). The challenge stems from the fact that VLMs are neither designed to process long videos nor tailored for finding actions. We overcome these problems by extending an iterative visual prompting technique. Specifically, we sample video frames and create a concatenated image with frame index labels, making a VLM guess a frame that is considered to be closest to the start and end of the action. Iterating this process by narrowing a sampling time window results in finding the specific frames corresponding to the start and end of an action. We demonstrate that this technique yields reasonable performance, achieving results comparable to state-of-the-art zero-shot action localization. These results illustrate a practical extension of VLMs for understanding videos. 10. APriCoT: Action Primitives based on Contact-state Transition for In-Hand Tool Manipulation

Abstract

In-hand tool manipulation is an operation that not only manipulates a tool within the hand (i.e., in-hand manipulation) but also achieves a grasp suitable for a task after the manipulation. This study aims to achieve an in-hand tool manipulation skill through deep reinforcement learning. The difficulty of learning the skill arises because this manipulation requires (A) exploring long-term contact-state changes to achieve the desired grasp and (B) highly-varied motions depending on the contact-state transition. (A) leads to a sparsity of a reward on a successful grasp, and (B) requires an RL agent to explore widely within the state-action space to learn highly-varied actions, leading to sample inefficiency. To address these issues, this study proposes Action Primitives based on Contact-state Transition (APriCoT). APriCoT decomposes the manipulation into short-term action primitives by describing the operation as a contact-state transition based on three action representations (detach, crossover, attach). In each action primitive, fingers are required to perform short-term and similar actions. By training a policy for each primitive, we can mitigate the issues from (A) and (B). This study focuses on a fundamental operation as an example of in-hand tool manipulation: rotating an elongated object grasped with a precision grasp by half a turn to achieve the initial grasp. Experimental results demonstrated that ours succeeded in both the rotation and the achievement of the desired grasp, unlike existing studies. Additionally, it was found that the policy was robust to changes in object shape.

11. Academically or Intellectually Gifted (AIG) 2019-22 Plan

Abstract

The Wake County Public School System's AIG 2019-22 Plan is designed to meet the academic, intellectual, social, and emotional needs of gifted and advanced learners with a focus on providing equitable access to AIG programming. To examine progress towards achieving the plan's goals, a descriptive study utilizing a variety of data sources was conducted. Emerging results from the District Nomination Local Norming Process are promising in addressing equitable access to AIG programming. Black/African American and Hispanic/Latino students were among the largest racial/ethnic subgroups nominated through this process. The goal of a 10% increase in underrepresented students identified was mostly achieved, but a similar goal for referred students was not. Related to comprehensive programming, the Talent Development (TD) program was also rolled out with 4th- through 6th-grade students. Specific to differentiated curriculum and instruction, the K-2 Science Nurturing Project lessons were completed and posted; however, teacher-reported usage was low. While Advanced Learning Services (ALS) and Academics staff planned for new math and English Language Arts (ELA) lessons for AIG and TD students in grades 3-8, these lessons were not created. Although the AIG 2019-22 Plan was not fully realized, there was a slight improvement in academic results. Seventy-nine percent of schools with an AIG subgroup met or exceeded expected growth for AIG students in grades 3-8 which represented an improvement from baseline. Demonstrated growth may be credited to the AIG processes and procedures already in place prior to the AIG 2019-22 Plan. Recommendations for improvement include: 1) fully implementing the District Nomination Local Norming Process, 2) consistently tracking the three nomination processes and TD students in a central database, 3) exploring the dissemination of the K-2 Science Nurturing Project lessons, 4) continuing cross-departmental collaboration to address 3rd-8th grade math and ELA instructional expectations and lessons, and 5) gathering experiential feedback from AIG and TD students and parents.

Abstract

We present a study of the growth of the quiescent galaxy population between 0.5 < z < 3 by tracing the number density and structural evolution of a sample of 4518 old and 583 young quiescent galaxies with log($M_*$/$M_{\odot}$)>10.4, selected from the COSMOS2020 catalog with complementary HST/F160W imaging from the 3D-DASH survey. Among the quiescent population at z$\sim$2, roughly 50% are recently quenched galaxies; these young quiescent galaxies become increasingly rare towards lower redshift, supporting the idea that the peak epoch of massive galaxy quenching occurred at z>2. Our data show that while the effective half-light radii of quiescent galaxies generally increases with time, young quiescent galaxies are significantly smaller than their older counterparts at the same redshift. In this work we investigate the connection between this size difference and other structural properties, including axis ratios, color gradients, stellar mass, and the intrinsic scatter in effective radii. We demonstrate that the size difference is driven by the most massive sub-population (log($M_*$/$M_{\odot}$)>11) and does not persist when restricting the sample to intermediate mass galaxies (10.4

Abstract

To use new robot hardware in a new environment, it is necessary to develop a control program tailored to that specific robot in that environment. Considering the reusability of software among robots is crucial to minimize the effort involved in this process and maximize software reuse across different robots in different environments. This paper proposes a method to remedy this process by considering hardware-level reusability, using Learning-from-observation (LfO) paradigm with a pre-designed skill-agent library. The LfO framework represents the required actions in hardware-independent representations, referred to as task models, from observing human demonstrations, capturing the necessary parameters for the interaction between the environment and the robot. When executing the desired actions from the task models, a set of skill agents is employed to convert the representations into robot commands. This paper focuses on the latter part of the LfO framework, utilizing the set to generate robot actions from the task models, and explores a hardware-independent design approach for these skill agents. These skill agents are described in a hardware-independent manner, considering the relative relationship between the robot's hand position and the environment. As a result, it is possible to execute these actions on robots with different hardware configurations by simply swapping the inverse kinematics solver. This paper, first, defines a necessary and sufficient skill-agent set corresponding to cover all possible actions, and considers the design principles for these skill agents in the library. We provide concrete examples of such skill agents and demonstrate the practicality of using these skill agents by showing that the same representations can be executed on two different robots, Nextage and Fetch, using the proposed skill-agents set.

Abstract

The Wake County Public School System's Student Engagement Survey is administered annually to measure students' perceptions of their learning experiences. This report is the first publication on student engagement results in the school system since 2018-19. Approximately 34,692 students from grades 5 through 12 responded in the spring of 2022 for a 34% response rate. The response rate decreased in the higher grades, dropping from 68.1% for grade 5 to 14.8% for grade 12. Due to low response rates for high school students, only grades 5 through 8 were included in this report. The general trend across survey domains is for percent agreement to remain stable or decrease with student grade level. 40. Score Academy High School: A Three-Year Program Evaluation. Getting and Keeping Students on a Path to Graduation

Abstract

Wake County Public School System (WCPSS) SCORE Academy is an alternative learning high school composed of two distinct programs. SCORE Academy Re-engagement (A) serves students who are 16 to 21 years old and need to earn between one and 10 credits toward graduation. SCORE Academy Reassignment (B) serves students who have been reassigned by the WCPSS Discipline Review Committee (DRC) in lieu of receiving a long-term suspension. This report evaluates each program's outcomes. Qualitative data collected from staff and students within each program show evidence of strong, positive relationships. An examination of credit accumulation across school years shows evidence of the program's established goals being partially met. SCORE Academy A students who were enrolled in the program for five months or less in 2020-21 or 2021-22 earned, on average, two credits, thereby meeting the semester goal. Students who were enrolled for more than five months did not, on average, meet the yearly goal of four credits earned. In 2021-22, most of the students (86%) in SCORE Academy B were enrolled for five months or less and earned, on average, two credits, missing the goal of three or more credits. The official graduation rates for SCORE Academy in 2020 (48.9%) and 2022 (44.0%) exceeded the goal of 40%, and five-year graduation rates were higher, hovering around 60%. SCORE Academy B students who returned to their base high schools had comparatively lower graduation rates with no added value in examining the five-year rate. Based on these findings, recommendations are given to improve program transparency and adjust program goals.

Abstract

Recent advancements in large foundation models have remarkably enhanced our understanding of sensory information in open-world environments. In leveraging the power of foundation models, it is crucial for AI research to pivot away from excessive reductionism and toward an emphasis on systems that function as cohesive wholes. Specifically, we emphasize developing Agent AI -- an embodied system that integrates large foundation models into agent actions. The emerging field of Agent AI spans a wide range of existing embodied and agent-based multimodal interactions, including robotics, gaming, and healthcare systems, etc. In this paper, we propose a novel large action model to achieve embodied intelligent behavior, the Agent Foundation Model. On top of this idea, we discuss how agent AI exhibits remarkable capabilities across a variety of domains and tasks, challenging our understanding of learning and cognition. Furthermore, we discuss the potential of Agent AI from an interdisciplinary perspective, underscoring AI cognition and consciousness within scientific discourse.
