Reinwardtia 12(2):129 – 133. — Kedrostis (Cucurbitaceae) occurs in Africa and Madagascar and comprises 4 (5) species in Asia. Of these 2 species are found in India and Sri Lanka and 2 (3) species in western Malesia. One Malesian species is for the first time included in Kedrostis here, Kedrostis bennettii (Miq.) W.J. de Wilde & Duyfjes, and one species is described as new here, Kedrostis hirta W.J. de Wilde & Duyfjes. One more Malesian species is insufficiently known to be formally described. Reinwardtia 12(3): 219 – 222.– A new monotypic genus of Cucurbitaceae from Morotai (Indonesia) is described. The genus is defined by unique characters, including large sepals, much longer than the petals, and it has distinctly cucurbitoid pollen features. The only species is Anangia macrosepala W.J. de Wilde & Duyfjes.

A widespread Canthium species of upland northern Thailand, Laos, and China, known erroneously as C. parvifolium (described from India) or C. horridum (described from Java) is formally described as a new species Canthium obscurum. A photograph of fruiting twigs and line drawings of the flower are added. Canthium parvifolium is lectotypified by a herbarium specimen in P.

Abstract

Alangium Lam. sect. Conostigma Bloemb. is largely confined to the Malesian area and contains 19 species. By using the characters as found in the original species-descriptions, and with emphasizing the nature of the indument of the leaf bud, the confusingly variable Alangium javanicum s.l.-complex could be dismantled for a great part. Four new species: A. ledermannii, A. pallens, A. plumbeum, and A. subcordatum, and two new varieties: A. meyeri var. macilentum and A. ebenaceum var. insignis are recognised. Two taxa are raised to specific status: A. nobile subsp. denudatum to A. denudatum and A. javanicum var. minahassicum to A. minahassicum. A key to the species is presented, and the concerned taxa are enumerated, referenced, described and some are figured.

Abstract

Alangium sect. Rhytidandra is confined to SE Asia, the Pacific and East Australia, and contains 13 species. Five species, viz. Alangium brassii, A. glabrum, A. gracile, A. guadalcanalense, and A. velutinum are described as new, whereas A. villosum subsp. solomonense is raised to specific rank: A. solomonense. Subspecies tomentosum formerly in A. villosum is transferred to another species and has become A. polyosmoides subsp. tomentosum. Finally Iodes ferruginea, described in Icacinaceae appeared to belong in Alangiaceae, and as the name ferruginea was occupied in Alangium it is changed into A. strigosum, nom. nov. A key to the species is presented, and the concerned taxa are enumerated, referenced, described, and two are figured.

A revision of the monotypic genus Zanonia L. is presented. The only and widely distributed species Z. indica comprises two subspecies, the typical one, and the newly described subsp. orientalis W.J. de Wilde & Duyfjes. Subspecies orientalis also contains a distinct variety, var. paludosa W.J. de Wilde & Duyfjes.

The genus Gynostemma is represented in Thailand and Malesia by four species of which the extremely variable G. pentaphyllum is widespread covering the whole area. Seven forms are recognized in G. pentaphyllum, of which three are new: forma fasciculare W.J. de Wilde & Duyfjes, forma grandiflorum W.J. de Wilde & Duyfjes, forma knemandrum W.J. de Wilde & Duyfjes, and three are new combinations: forma dasycarpum (C.Y. Wu) W.J. de Wilde & Duyfjes, forma pubescens (Gagnep.) W.J. de Wilde & Duyfjes, and forma simplicifolium (Blume) W.J. de Wilde & Duyfjes. Two new species, both endemic to New Guinea, are described: G. intermedium W.J. de Wilde & Duyfjes and G. papuanum W.J. de Wilde & Duyfjes.

Gymnopetalum Arn. is distributed from India to the Moluccas. There are 4 species, including 1 new species, G. orientale W.J. de Wilde & Duyfjes, from E Malesia. In G. integrifolium (Roxb.) Kurtz 2 new varieties, besides the type-variety, are accepted: G. integrifolium var. penicaudii (Gagnep.) W.J. de Wilde & Duyfjes (in China) and G. integrifolium var. pectinatum W.J. de Wilde & Duyfjes (in E Java). A key to the species is presented. The Malesian taxa are fully described.

The genus Zehneria Endl. is split into 5 genera, of which 4 are new: Indomelothria, Neoachmandra, Scopella, and Urceodiscus. Apart from several new combinations and taxa of subspecific rank, the following species are described as new: I. chlorocarpa, N. backeri, N. lancifolia, N. macrantha, N. nesophila, N. platysperma, U. arfakensis, U. carrii, U. hippocrepicus, U. parviflora, U. scabridula, U. viridis, Z. elbertii, Z. erythrobacca, Z. immarginata, Z. neocaledonica, Z. pedicellata, Z. pisifera, Z. tahitensis, and Z. trullifolia. The New World genus Melothria was introduced in Asia where it is represented by one species, M. pendula L.

Abstract

The genus Solena Lour. is redefined, and its 3 species and 1 subspecies are keyed out and described: S. amplexicaulis occurs in S India, S. heterophylla, with 2 subspecies is widespread, but does not occur in S India, and S. umbellata (Klein ex Willd.) W.J. de Wilde & Duyfjes, comb. nov., occurs in S India and Sri Lanka. The status of S. heterophylla subsp. napaulensis (Ser.) W.J. de Wilde & Duyfjes, comb. & stat. nov. needs further study as this subspecies is very similar to the more widespread subsp. heterophylla, but it is distinct by sigmoid thecae. Solena amplexicaulis is taxonomically more distinct from the other two species of Solena. In southern India Kedrostis foetidissima much resembles Solena in general habit, especially by the more or less amplexicaul leaves, and therefore it is discussed and keyed out against Solena.

Abstract

Neoalsomitra contains 11 species, one of which, N. clavigera, is widespread, covering the whole range of the genus from NE India and S China into Australia and the Pacific. The genus is heterogeneous in having species with free stamens and species with the filaments connate; however, this cannot be used for subdivision. Neoalsomitra hederifolia and N. schefferiana are podagric succulents, i.e. with thickened stem-bases. Neoalsomitra pilosa W.J. de Wilde & Duyfjes (New Guinea) is newly described; new combinations are N. hederifolia (Decne.) W.J. de Wilde & Duyfjes and N. schefferiana subsp. podagrica (Steenis) W.J. de Wilde & Duyfjes.

Abstract

This book covers many aspects related to the stilbenoids: a group of natural products that occur in bryophytes, pteridophytes, gymnosperms and angiosperms. The first part of the book deals with their distribution in different taxa of the plant kingdom. Long tables with plant species and isolated stilbenoids are given. Their chemistry is discussed and structural formulae (more than 300) are given in an appendix. The book continues with the biosynthesis and chemical synthesis. Their biosynthetic pathway is linked to that of the flavonoids. Accordingly, stilbenoids originate from the shikimic acid pathway, and are linked with three acetate units. Methods for the analysis and identification of this class of compounds are presented, among others thin-layer chromatography (TLC), gas chromatography (GC), high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), ultraviolet (UV) spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR), mass spectrometry (MS) and X-ray crystallography.

Abstract

The present volume contains information for local tropical as welt as world wide agricultural improvement, and may as such be regarded as a contribution to the continuing so-called green revolution. It is the first of an intended series of publications surveying the botany and agriculture of useful cultivated and wild growing plants of Ethiopia. As this country displays a great variety in its physical and biological environment in connection with a great diversity of local inhabitants applying various agricultural methods, it harbours a wealth of food plant species. The first part of the book, up to page 46, deals with general considerations, with a chapter on the physical and biological environments in Ethiopia, covering such topics as geology, topography, climate, soils, and natural vegetation, and including a very interesting description of the types of agriculture practized in Ethiopia.

Abstract

Ecophysiological studies on plants of the lowland wet tropics have been started relatively late, leaving a large gap between the early work of Schimper, Stocker and Walter. However, more recently research in this area made strong progress by the development of joint projects by scientists from the U.S.A. with local institutions. The availability of portable instruments of energy fluxes, water potential components, and gas exchange has created the basis for matching up with modern approaches in research elsewhere.

Abstract

This book presents an up to date account of bacterial metabolism, illustrating data with clear and interesting examples. Both, scholars and students of this subject will find this book worth reading, not only because of the contents but also of the author’s style, the presentation of tables and diagrams and the pleasant type. In the first chapters the principal reactions of energy and biosynthetic metabolism have been discussed using Escherichia coli as a model organism. Then the diversity of aerobic metabolism among bacteria has been outlined. Hereafter a brief description of the regulation of the level and activity of enzymes has been given followed by a large chapter on fermentation. The last two chapters are devoted to chemolithotrophic and phototrophic metabolism and to nitrogen fixation.

The naturally large annual fluctuation in the number of flowering individuals of Anacamptis pyramidalis in the water catchment- and conservation area the „Noordhollands Duinreservaat” tends to obscure the alternative possibility that this species, which was formerly locally very abundant, is at present severely threatened by drought, and now is almost extinct. The author argues that this, as well as the depauperation of the whole dune flora, is caused directly and indirectly by the excessive withdrawal of the groundwater.

Abstract

Notes are given on Adenia sect. Blepharanthes (Passifloraceae) in Africa, with a key to the species. Adenia schweinfurthii Engler is a species restricted to eastern Central Africa, not occurring in West- and all over East Africa as was often assumed. Adenia lobata (Jacq.) Engler is restricted to West Africa. The in Africa widely spread species should be called Adenia rumicifolia Engler. Lectotypes are chosen from isotype material for both Adenia schweinfurthii and Adenia rumicifolia of which the holotypes were lost in Berlin. Adenia miegei Ake Assi is reduced to a variety of Adenia rumicifolia.

Abstract

Eenjarige (steeds?), kale, in zoet of zwak brak water groeiende, ondergedoken, kruidachtige planten. Stengel vaak gevorkt, rolrond, soms gestekeld, aan de voet en de onderste knopen wortelend. Bladen in schijnkransen van 3 of meer, zittend, lijnvormig, soms min of meer priem- of tongvormig, met schedevormige voet, eennervig, met aan beide zijden van de nerf, vooral in het onderste gedeelte van volwassen bladen, een luchtholte, die vaak door tussenschotten onderbroken is. Bladschede bovenaan geoord, afgeknot of meer geleidelijk in de schijf overgaand, aan de bovenrand, evenals de rand en soms ook de onderzijde van de bladschijf getand of gestekeld. Okselschubjes 2. Bloemen eenslachtig, meestal eenhuizig, alleenstaand of soms in groepjes van 2—4, aan de basis van de soms zeer korte zijspruit die ontspringt uit de oksel van het onderste blad van een schijnkrans; elke bloem vaak ingesloten in een vliezige, zittende of bijna zittende bloeischede (vrouwelijke bloemen bij de Ned. soorten zonder deze). Bloeischede vaak min of meer flesvormig, naar de top samengetrokken in een ongeveer cilindrische hals; deze aan de rand meestal met enige opgerichte stekeltjes. Mannelijke bloemen met een vlak voor de bloei meestal aanzienlijk langer wordende steel en bestaande uit een bijna zittende of gesteelde helmknop, die nauw omsloten wordt door een vliezig, zakvormig „bloemdek”, dat aan de top eindigt in 2 meer of minder duidelijke, iets bolvormige lobjes; helmknop 1- of 4-, zelden 2-hokkig, basifix, aan de top met een onregelmatige porie openspringend. Vrouwelijke bloemen zonder bloemdek, alleen bestaande uit een bijna zittend, ellipsoïdisch tot langwerpig, eenhokkig vruchtbeginsel, met 1 ± cilindrische stijl en 2—3(—4) lijnvormige, vaak ongelijk lange stempels; zaadknop 1, basaal, rechtopstaand, anatroop. In the course of a revision of the genus Najas for the Flora Malesiana I was confronted with the morphological evaluation of the spathe and with the variability of its occurrence, because this organ has served for the distinction of sections within the subgenus Caulinia. It appeared of interest to publish the result of this work as a separate precursor as the space available in the Flora will not permit a detailed account.

Abstract

The section Ophiocaulon (Hook.) Harms3 is fairly well distinguished from the other sections of Adenia, from which if differs mainly by structure of the receptacle and the single, spathulate gland at the transition from petiole to blade. Recent studies of the pollen by Spirlet (1965)2 also seem to set it apart. The section is restricted to Africa and is distributed all over this continent south of the Sahara, though not found in the extreme N.E. corner comprising Ethiopia and Somalia. It seems to be absent from Madagascar.
