Spin-polarised neutron reflection is used to determine the magnetisation of ultrathin epitaxial fcc Fe films sandwiched by Cu (001). A 3.0ML (monolayer) film had a measured average magnetic dipole moment per atom of 1.9±0.6 Bohr magnetons/atom which is the highest value yet observed for an fcc Fe film on Cu and is consistent with the high spin-moment phase predicted theoretically for bulk fcc iron. This state only appears to be stable for a narrow range of film thicknesses. Raising the film growth temperature leads to a considerable decrease in the observed moment.
