Abstract

The interaction of water vapor with freshly prepared bulk YBa2Cu3Oy produces an increase in the number of EPR active Cu2+ ions. For many of the samples studied, the number increased by a factor of about 5. On further exposure to water vapor, the number decreases to approximately its initial value. We suggest that the increase and decrease of the Cu2+ signal is due primarily to residual BaCuO2. The changes in the EPR spectra of BaCuO2 when exposed to water vapor are similar to those observed for YBa2Cu3Oy. These changes occur during the initial stage (first few hours) of exposure to 100% water vapor in air. A different Cu2+ signal is observed from samples soaked in water, probably from the production of Y2BaCuO5.

Abstract

The topographical changes in the asperities of a flat cobalt-hardened gold electroplated surface that occur as a result of being contacted by a sphere are simulated by computer superposition of a mathematically generated spherical surface and a Scanning Tunneling Microscope topograph of an actual flat sample surface. Both ideally smooth and rough spherical surfaces are considered. Two-dimensional maps of the location and size of contact areas and quantitative information on contact areas resulting from asperities that would have been deformed in actual contact events are presented. In addition, 3-dimensional plots and quantitative values of the location and volume of asperity material that would have been deformed in actual contact events are presented. Good agreement is found when the simulation results are compared with experimentally obtained contact results for the same sample surface region at the same indention depth. The simulation technique should prove useful in predicting changes in contact performance associated with changes in contact surface topography or contactor geometry. Computer simulation is much faster and easier than obtaining similar information by experimental techniques which are time consuming and require sophisticated sample contact and positioning hardware.

Abstract

The topographical changes to the asperities of a flat cobalt-hardened gold electroplated surface that occur as a result of being contacted with a ruby sphere are studied by means of scanning tunneling microscopy and software developed to allow computer image registration and subtraction. A range of normal, force loads and sphere sizes are utilized. Quantitative information is obtained for each plastically deformed asperity in the contact region concerning the volume of material displaced during the contact process and the area of the contact spot resulting from the flattened asperity. Three-dimensional images are presented that show the location and size of the portions the asperities that were displaced in the contact process. Two-dimensional maps are generated to show the location and size of the asperity contacting spots in the contact region, Data from contact conditions of 10 to 100 grams normal force and from 1/16 inch to 1/4 inch contacting sphere diameter are used to show trends concerning the number of deformed asperities, total contacting area, total deformed volume, maximum area of the largest deformed asperity, force/total contacting area, and total deformed volume/total contacting area as a function of normal force and sphere diameter.

Abstract

Context. About half of the baryons of the Universe are expected to be in the form of filaments of hot and low-density intergalactic medium. Most of these baryons remain undetected even by the most advanced X-ray observatories, which are limited in sensitivity to the diffuse low-density medium. Aims. The Planck satellite has provided hundreds of detections of the hot gas in clusters of galaxies via the thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (tSZ) effect and is an ideal instrument for studying extended low-density media through the tSZ effect. In this paper we use the Planck data to search for signatures of a fraction of these missing baryons between pairs of galaxy clusters. Methods. Cluster pairs are good candidates for searching for the hotter and denser phase of the intergalactic medium (which is more easily observed through the SZ effect). Using an X-ray catalogue of clusters and the Planck data, we selected physical pairs of clusters as candidates. Using the Planck data, we constructed a local map of the tSZ effect centred on each pair of galaxy clusters. ROSAT data were used to construct X-ray maps of these pairs. After modelling and subtracting the tSZ effect and X-ray emission for each cluster in the pair, we studied the residuals on both the SZ and X-ray maps. Results. For the merging cluster pair A399-A401 we observe a significant tSZ effect signal in the intercluster region beyond the virial radii of the clusters. A joint X-ray SZ analysis allows us to constrain the temperature and density of this intercluster medium. We obtain a temperature of kT = 7.1 ± 0.9 keV (consistent with previous estimates) and a baryon density of (3.7 ± 0.2) × 10-4 cm -3. Conclusions. The Planck satellite mission has provided the first SZ detection of the hot and diffuse intercluster gas.

Abstract

We make use of the Planck all-sky survey to derive number counts and spectral indices of extragalactic sources - infrared and radio sources - from the Planck Early Release Compact Source Catalogue (ERCSC) at 100 to 857 GHz (3mm to 350 mu m). Three zones (deep, medium and shallow) of approximately homogeneous coverage are used to permit a clean and controlled correction for incompleteness, which was explicitly not done for the ERCSC, as it was aimed at providing lists of sources to be followed up. Our sample, prior to the 80% completeness cut, contains between 217 sources at 100 GHz and 1058 sources at 857 GHz over about 12 800 to 16 550 deg(2) (31 to 40% of the sky). After the 80% completeness cut, between 122 and 452 and sources remain, with flux densities above 0.3 and 1.9 Jy at 100 and 857 GHz. The sample so defined can be used for statistical analysis. Using the multi-frequency coverage of the Planck High Frequency Instrument, all the sources have been classified as either dust-dominated (infrared galaxies) or synchrotron-dominated (radio galaxies) on the basis of their spectral energy distributions (SED). Our sample is thus complete, flux-limited and color-selected to differentiate between the two populations. We find an approximately equal number of synchrotron and dusty sources between 217 and 353 GHz; at 353 GHz or higher (or 217 GHz and lower) frequencies, the number is dominated by dusty (synchrotron) sources, as expected. For most of the sources, the spectral indices are also derived. We provide for the first time counts of bright sources from 353 to 857 GHz and the contributions from dusty and synchrotron sources at all HFI frequencies in the key spectral range where these spectra are crossing. The observed counts are in the Euclidean regime. The number counts are compared to previously published data (from earlier Planck results, Herschel, BLAST, SCUBA, LABOCA, SPT, and ACT) and models taking into account both radio or infrared galaxies, and covering a

Abstract

We describe the processing of the 336 billion raw data samples from the High Frequency Instrument (HFI) which we performed to produce six temperature maps from the first 295 days of Planck-HFI survey data. These maps provide an accurate rendition of the sky emission at 100, 143, 217, 353, 545 and 857GHz with an angular resolution ranging from 9.9 to 4.4'. The white noise level is around 1.5 mu K degree or less in the 3 main CMB channels (100-217 GHz). The photometric accuracy is better than 2% at frequencies between 100 and 353 GHz and around 7% at the two highest frequencies. The maps created by the HFI Data Processing Centre reach our goals in terms of sensitivity, resolution, and photometric accuracy. They are already sufficiently accurate and well-characterised to allow scientific analyses which are presented in an accompanying series of early papers. At this stage, HFI data appears to be of high quality and we expect that with further refinements of the data processing we should be able to achieve, or exceed, the science goals of the Planck project.

Abstract

The Planck High Frequency Instrument (HFI) is designed to measure the temperature and polarization anisotropies of the cosmic microwave background and Galactic foregrounds in six ~30% bands centered at 100, 143, 217, 353, 545, and 857 GHz at an angular resolution of 10′ (100 GHz), 7′ (143 GHz), and 5′ (217 GHz and higher). HFI has been operating flawlessly since launch on 14 May 2009, with the bolometers reaching 100 mK the first week of July. The settings of the readout electronics, including bolometer bias currents, that optimize HFI's noise performance on orbit are nearly the same as the ones chosen during ground testing. Observations of Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn have confirmed that the optical beams and the time responses of the detection chains are in good agreement with the predictions of physical optics modeling and pre-launch measurements. The Detectors suffer from a high flux of cosmic rays due to historically low levels of solar activity. As a result of the redundancy of Planck's observation strategy, theremoval of a few percent of data contaminated by glitches does not significantly affect the instrumental sensitivity. The cosmic ray flux represents a significant and variable heat load on the sub-Kelvin stage. Temporal variation and the inhomogeneous distribution of the flux results in thermal fluctuations that are a probable source of low frequency noise. The removal of systematic effects in the time ordered data provides a signal with an average noise equivalent power that is 70% of the goal in the 0.6-2.5 Hz range. This is slightly higher than was achieved during the pre-launch characterization but better than predicted in the early phases of the project. The improvement over the goal is a result of the low level of instrumental background loading achieved by the optical and thermal design of the HFI.

Abstract

Derivative activation analysis is a technique in which the element or chemical entity to be determined is either replaced or complexed in a preirradiation chemical procedure with another element for which neutron activation analysis has an intrinsically higher sensitivity. Although the technique has many potential applications, the literature of the field is very limited. Examples of recent applications in our laboratory include: determination of P in natural waters, biological reference standards, brain tissue, rocks and coal; determination of Ni in a stony meteorite; determination of T1 in solutions; and speciation of oxygen (e.g., hydroxyl and carbonyl moieties) in coal via 14 MeV neutron activation.

14. The pattern of microtubules in the axonemes of Gymnosphaera albida sassaki: evidence for 13 protofilaments

Abstract

The axonemes of Gymnosphaera albida radiate from a central axoplast. Their proximal ends form a shell around the axoplast. Within the shell each axoneme is enveloped by a fibrillar sheath and the microtubules are interconnected by electron-dense linkages, which sometimes appear to be double. In nearly transverse sections the microtubules and their linkages form hexagons of 2 irregular types arranged in alternating rows. The shapes of the hexagons vary from one axoneme to the next. The variation is caused largely by the inclination of the axonemes to the line of sight, but also by distortion occurring during the preparation, observation and photography of the sections. Calculations show that, of a number of likely basic patterns (as would be seen in strictly transverse section), only one is compatible with measurements made on 9 of the axonemes. This involves only one type of hexagon oriented in 2 directions to form a ‘parquet-floor’ pattern. The hexagon is bilaterally symmetrical and its 6 microtubules all have the same set of angles between their linkages, namely an unpaired angle of 138 degrees 28′ and paired angles of 110 degrees 46′. Because these angles are in the ratio of 5:4:4, it is deduced that the microtubules have 13 protofilaments forming their walls. Morphogenetically the lateral growth of the pattern is governed by 2 rules: (1) there must be one, and only one, direction of 2-step zig-zagging of the linkages, and (2) linkages forming opposite sides of a hexagon must be in parallel.

Abstract

Coals distributed widely in rank and geographical origin have been analysed for organically-bound oxygen by several conventional and fast neutron activation analysis (FNAA) techniques. Pyrolysis of demineralized coal with measurement of evolved CO2 by coulometry was found to be the most reliable of the conventional methods. Direct FNAA determinations of organic oxygen by analyses of demineralized coal (DMC) samples yielded data in excellent agreement with pyrolysis, as did values computed using a modified ‘by difference’ calculation. The convergence of data from these totally independent approaches, suggests a measure of true organic oxygen levels has been achieved. A ‘difference method’ based on FNAA determinations of total dry coal oxygen and inorganic oxygen in low temperature ash yielded organic oxygen data that were typically lower than pyrolysis values, possibly due to oxidation of organic sulphur in the ashing process and/or the presence of non-extractable mineral oxygen in the DMC used in the pyrolysis method. A third FNAA ‘difference method’ based on simultaneous determinations of both total oxygen and silicon contents of dry whole coals, followed by estimation of the inorganic oxygen contents based on the silicon contents, was found to be rapid and adaptable to on-stream analysis. However, observed mineralogy-dependent deviations from a simple inorganic oxygen-silicon relationship suggest that the latter technique would be most successful when applied to coals with similar mineralogy.

Abstract

Six experiments charting the growth of albino rats with and without infection with Trypanosoma lewisi were done. These extended over every period of a year. Starting body weights ranged from weanling (56 gm) to young adult (185 gm). Those rats infected with the trypanosome showed a consistently greater rate of growth than uninfected animals. Animals receiving a smaller initial dose of trypansomes sometimes had greater parasitemias that continued longer than those whose infections were begun with a larger inoculum of parasites, but there was no positive correlation with greater growth stimulation of rats.
