Abstract: We have searched for first generation scalar leptoquark (LQ) pairs in the enu+jets channel using ppbar collider data (integrated luminosity= 115 pb^-1) collected by the DZero experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron during 1992-96. The analysis yields no candidate events. We combine the results with those from the ee+jets and nunu+jets channels to obtain 95% confidence level (CL) upper limits on the LQ pair production cross section as a function of mass and of beta, the branching fraction to a charged lepton. Comparing with the next-to-leading order theory, we set 95% CL lower limits on the LQ mass of 225, 204, and 79 GeV/c^2 for beta=1, 1/2, and 0, respectively.

Abstract: We have searched for the pair production of first generation scalar leptoquarks in the $\mathrm{eejj}$ channel using the full data set $(123{\mathrm{pb}}^{\ensuremath{-}1})$ collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron during 1992--1996. We observe no candidates with an expected background of approximately 0.4 events. Comparing the experimental 95% confidence level upper limit to theoretical calculations of the cross section with the assumption of a 100% branching fraction of $\mathrm{eq}$, we set a lower limit on the mass of a first generation scalar leptoquark of $225\mathrm{GeV}{/c}^{2}$. The results of this analysis rule out the interpretation of the excess of high ${Q}^{2}$ events at DESY HERA as leptoquarks which decay exclusively to $\mathrm{eq}$.

Abstract: We have measured the $\mathrm{WW}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ gauge boson coupling parameters using $p\overline{p}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\ell}\ensuremath{\nu}\ensuremath{\gamma}+X$ ( $\ensuremath{\ell}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}e,\ensuremath{\mu}$) events at $\sqrt{s}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}1.8$ TeV. The data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $92.8{\mathrm{pb}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$, were collected using the D\O{} detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The measured cross section times branching ratio for $p\overline{p}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}W\ensuremath{\gamma}+X$ with ${p}_{T}^{\ensuremath{\gamma}}g10$ GeV/c and ${R}_{\ensuremath{\ell}\ensuremath{\gamma}}g0.7$ is ${11.3}_{\ensuremath{-}1.5}^{+1.7}\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1.5$ pb, in agreement with the standard model prediction. The 1 degree of freedom 95% confidence level limits on individual CP-conserving parameters are $\ensuremath{-}0.93l\ensuremath{\Delta}\ensuremath{\kappa}l0.94$ and $\ensuremath{-}0.31l\ensuremath{\lambda}l0.29$. Similar limits are set on the CP-violating coupling parameters.

Abstract: We present results from a search for anomalous $\mathrm{WW}$ and $\mathrm{WZ}$ production in $p\overline{p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}1.8\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}\mathrm{TeV}$. We used $p\overline{p}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}e\ensuremath{\nu}\mathrm{jjX}$ events observed during the 1992--1993 run of the Fermilab Tevatron collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $13.7\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.7{\mathrm{pb}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$. A fit to the transverse momentum spectrum of the $W$ boson yields direct limits on the CP-conserving anomalous $\mathrm{WW}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ and $\mathrm{WWZ}$ coupling parameters of $\ensuremath{-}0.9l\ensuremath{\Delta}\ensuremath{\kappa}l1.1$ (with $\ensuremath{\lambda}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}0$) and $\ensuremath{-}0.6l\ensuremath{\lambda}l0.7$ (with $\ensuremath{\Delta}\ensuremath{\kappa}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}0$) at the 95% confidence level, for a form factor scale $\ensuremath{\Lambda}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}1.5\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}\mathrm{TeV}$, assuming that the $\mathrm{WW}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ and $\mathrm{WWZ}$ coupling parameters are equal.

Abstract: The global topologies of inclusive three- and four-jet events produced in $\overline{p}p$ interactions are described. The three- and four-jet events are selected from data recorded by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider operating at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=1800$ GeV. The measured, normalized distributions of various topological variables are compared with parton-level predictions of tree-level QCD calculations. The parton-level QCD calculations are found to be in good agreement with the data. The studies also show that the topological distributions of the different subprocesses involving different numbers of quarks are very similar and reproduce the measured distributions well. The parton-shower Monte Carlo generators provide a less satisfactory description of the topologies of the three- and four-jet events.

Abstract: We have searched for associated production of the lightest chargino W 1 and next-to-lightest neutralino Z 2 of the minimal supersymmetric standard model in pp collisions at √s=1.8 TeV using the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. Data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 12.5±0.7pb -1 were examined for events containing three isolated leptons. No evidence for W 1 Z 2 pair production was found. Limits on s(W 1 Z 2 )B(W 1 →lνZ 1 )B(Z 2 →llZ 1 ) are presented.

Abstract: Backward emitted protons with momentump>0.3 GeV/c in interactions of neutrino in the energy range 10–200 GeV with photoemulsion nuclei were investigated. Energy spectrum slope parameter of backward protons was measured to beT0=48.9±7.9 MeV. TheA-dependence power index of relative mean yield of backward protons was found to bea=0.68±0.12. A drop in the mean yield of backward protons at the four momentum squared over ∼15 (GeV/c)2 (the neutrino energy over ∼50 GeV) was observed.

Abstract: We report on a search for pair production of a fourth generation charge -1/3 quark (b') in pbar p collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.8 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron using an integrated luminosity of 93 pb^-1. Both quarks are assumed to decay via flavor changing neutral currents (FCNC). The search uses the signatures gamma + 3 jets + mu-tag and 2 gamma + 2 jets. We see no significant excess of events over the expected background. We place an upper limit on the production cross section times branching fraction that is well below theoretical expectations for a b' quark decaying exclusively via FCNC for b' quark masses up to m(Z) + m(b)., Eleven pages, two postscript figures, submitted to Physical Review Letters

Abstract: A pulse stretching technique in a Q-switched ruby laser oscillator is described. The major improvement to our previously developed pulse stretching circuit consists in a more adequate waveform for the feedforward part. This new system gives fairly flat pulses with adjustable duration up to ∼ 100 μs and good coherence length in excess of 11 m. The cavity is followed by several amplifiers and produces light energies up to 8 J for holographic recording of particle tracks in the Fermilab 15-foot bubble chamber. The considerably increased coherence length will find applications in many fields of pulsed holography and its use with fiber optics is particularily promising.

Abstract: We have studied the properties of inclusive neutral-strange-particle production in charged-current ..nu..p interactions. The rate for producing at least one neutral strange particle in a charged-current interaction is 0.14 +- 0.02. The inclusive distributions for events with neutral strange particles and for all charged-current events exhibit the same qaulitative behavior. We find no acceptable candidates for the ..delta..S = - ..delta..Q ..lambda.. production reaction ..nu..p ..-->.. ..mu../sup -/2..pi../sup +/..pi../sup -/ in approximately 3000 charged-current events with E/sub ..nu../ > 10 GeV. We find upper limits (relative to the total charged-current sample) for charmed-particle production in any one mass region with subsequent decay into ..lambda..m..pi.. and Km..pi.. final states of 1% and 2%, respectively.

Abstract: We have studied transverse momenta of charged hadrons in the current fragmentation region of charged current antineutrino- nucleon interactions observed in the Fermilab 15 ft bubble chamber. The measured momentum squared transverse to the v μ + plane (p out 2 ) of the negative hadrons varies as a function of Q2, W2 and x as expected from t he leading order perturbative QCD calculations. Positively charged hadrons show a different transverse momentum behaviour as a function of Q2.

15. π−pinteractions at 205 GeV/c: Multiplicities of charged and neutral particles; production of neutral particles

Abstract: A study of 205-GeV/c ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}p$ interactions has been made with a 48 800-picture exposure in the bare Fermilab 30-inch hydrogen bubble chamber. The average number of charged particles produced per inelastic interaction is 7.99\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.06. The elastic cross section is 3.18\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.13 mb and the total cross section is 24.19\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.44 mb. The inclusive cross sections for neutral-particle production are: $\ensuremath{\sigma}(\ensuremath{\gamma})=171.3\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}15.3$ mb, $\ensuremath{\sigma}({K}_{S}^{0})=3.64\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.61$ mb ($xl0.3$), $\ensuremath{\sigma}(\ensuremath{\Lambda})=1.71\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.34$ mb ($xl0.3$), and $\ensuremath{\sigma}(\overline{\ensuremath{\Lambda}})=0.59\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.23$ mb ($xl0.1$). The average number of ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}'\mathrm{s}$ produced per inelastic collision is consistent with a linear rise with the number of charged particles, and about equal to the number of produced ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ or ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}$. The average number of ${K}^{0}'\mathrm{s}$, $\ensuremath{\Lambda}'\mathrm{s}$, and $\overline{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}'\mathrm{s}$ is consistent with very little dependence on the number of charged particles. General characteristics of neutral-particle production are presented and compared with other experiments. For each topology the produced neutral energy is $\ensuremath{\sim}\frac{1}{3}$ of the incident energy.

Abstract: A search for ..mu..e events produced in an antineutrino hydrogen-neon experiment using the Fermilab 15-ft bubble chamber is reported. Based on a single candidate, the 90%-confidence upper limit for the relative yield of ..mu../sup +/e/sup -/ events is 0.5% of all charged-current events with antineutrino energy greater than 10 GeV.

Abstract: We present results for the reactions vp ..-->.. ..mu../sup -/..pi../sup +/p and vp ..-->.. ..mu../sup -/K/sup +/p at energies above 5 GeV. The average cross section for the first reaction between 15 ad 40 GeV is (0.80 +- 0.12) x 10/sup -38/ cm/sup 2/ and for events with M/sub ..pi../+p-italic < 1.4 GeV is (0.55 +- 0.08) x 10/sup -33/ cm/sup 2/. The ratio of the cross section for the second reaction to that for the first is 0.017 +- 0.010.

Abstract: The Fermilab 15-ft bubble chamber filled with hydrogen was exposed to a broad-momentum-band horn-focused neutrino beam produced by 300-GeV interacting protons. The selection procedure to choose a charged-current neutrino event sample is discussed. Less than three percent of the events are due to neutral hadron interactions. We present and experimentally test a method that can be used to identify the muon, estimate the incident neutrino energy, and eliminate most neutral-current interactions from the charged-current sample. Above 10 GeV the method produces an approximately 86% pure sample of charged-current events with an error in energy estimation of the order of 8% over a broad region of the data. In addition we establish experimentally several important properties of high-energy charged-current neutrino interactions. The hadrons are produced in a jet, the individual particles having sharply limited momenta perpendicular to the hadronic axis. The jet structure is maintained with constant properties to very high values of ${Q}^{2}$ and hadronic mass. The fraction of energy going into invisible particles is moderate, consistent with that expected. The average number of neutral pions rises linearly with the average number of charged particles.

Abstract: Backward protons from neutrino and antineutrino interactions in a Ne-${\mathrm{H}}_{2}$ mixture are studied. The inclusive characteristics of the reactions are presented for both neutral- and charged-current events and comparison with models are made. The data are in agreement with the hypothesis of nuclear scaling.

Abstract: In a neutrino bubble-chamber experiment with a mean event energy of 90 GeV, clear evidence is observed for muon inner bremsstrahlung. The corrected rate, for gamma rays with E/sub ..gamma../>1 GeV and within 32 mrad of the muon direction, is 0.027 +- 0.005 per charged current event. Comparison with QED calculations is discussed.

Abstract: Coherent rho/sup +/ production on neon nuclei has been observed in charged-current events in a neutrino bubble-chamber experiment. The incident neutrino energy was 10--320 GeV, with a median event energy of 80 GeV. The rate per charged-current event was (0.28 +- 0.10)%. Comparison was made to vector-meson-dominance predictions; agreement with the overall rate, but disagreement at high neutrino energies and at high Q/sup 2/, was found.

Abstract: We report observation of a neutrino (antineutrino)-induced event with two electrons, one positron, one positively charged muon, a neutral K meson, and seven gammas in an experiment performed in the FNAL 15-ft. bubble chamber with a 47% atomic mixture of neon in hydrogen. Estimated experimental electron backgrounds are ∼10 −4 per track. At present we have no plausible interpretation of this event.

Abstract: The results of a study of gamma production in antineutrino-nucleon interactions observed in the Fermilab 15 ft bubble chamber filled with a neon-hydrogen mixture are presented. From a sample of 706 gamma-rays we obtained the dependence of the average number of produced π0,s on negative multiplicity, momentum transfer and hadronic invariant mass. We find that the mean transverse momentum of the gamma-rays is independent of the above variables but has an asymmetric distribution with respect to the Feynman variablex. The invariant gamma cross-section distributions, the distribution functionD for π0,s and the energy spectrum of π0,s reconstructed from the gamma spectrum are also reported.

Abstract: We analyze a sample of about 2000 charged-current neutrino-proton interactions with neutrino energy greater than 10 GeV produced in the 15-ft hydrogen bubble chamber at Fermilab using a broad-band neutrino beam. We study the details of the hadrons produced and find generally good agreement with the quark-parton model and present parametrizations of quark fragmentation ($D$) functions. The $D$ functions are found to be independent of ${Q}^{2}$ and $W$ (total hadronic mass) for $Wg4$ GeV, in agreement with the model. The height of the rapidity plateau in the quark (current) fragmentation region is compared to that of the diquark (target) fragmentation region and the two are found to agree. Detailed charge-correlation data are presented and compared to the Field-Feynman model of the $D$ functions, and also to a longitudinal-phase-space model, and are found to disagree with both. The mean transverse momentum ${P}_{T}$ of the hadrons is studied for its ${Q}^{2}$ and Feynman-$X$ dependence. We find a sizeable increase of $〈{{P}_{T}}^{2}〉$ with Feynman $X$ which agrees, however, with our longitudinal-phase-space model. We find no statistically significant dependence of $〈{{P}_{T}}^{2}〉$ on ${Q}^{2}$, up to ${Q}^{2}=64$ ${(\mathrm{G}\mathrm{e}\mathrm{V}/\mathit{c})}^{2}$, although the highest-momentum hadrons are consistent with a mild ${Q}^{2}$ dependence. The azimuthal angular distribution of the highest-momentum hadrons in high-${Q}^{2}$ events is examined for evidence of anisotropy of the type that has been predicted for effects of gluon radiation.

Abstract: The ratio of neutral-current to charged-current cross sections is determined from a sample of events obtained in an exposure of the Fermilab 15-ft hydrogen bubble chamber to a high-energy, horn-focused neutrino beam. For evens with three or more prongs and with visible hadron momentum above 10 GeV/c, the ratio is 0.40 +- 0.14. A Monte Carlo calculation assuming the Weinberg-Salam model is used to correct for excluded events, yielding R/sub NC/CC/ = 0.48 +- 0.17.

Abstract: In charged-current neutrino-neon events (mean energy 100 GeV), fast charged hadrons show an up-down asymmetry with respect to the lepton plane. The asymmetry may be associated with reinteractions in the neon nuclei. For z>0.3 hadrons the asymmetry is -0.054 +- 0.017; for those events showing evidence for reinteractions the asymmetry is -0.111 +- 0.028. For all hadrons the asymmetry is 0.0010 +- 0.0048.

Abstract: In an experiment (E546) to study interactions of {l angle}{ital E}{r angle}=100 GeV and {l angle}{ital Q}{sup 2}{r angle}=17 GeV{sup 2} neutrinos in the Fermilab 15-foot bubble chamber, we have looked for a left-right asymmetry in the azimuthal angle {phi} of individual hadrons about the direction of the lepton momentum transfer ({ital q} vector). Significant asymmetry is found for forward positive hadrons; for {ital x}{sub {ital F}}{gt}0.10, we find {l angle}cos{phi}{r angle}={minus}0.029{plus minus}0.008, where {ital x}{sub {ital F}} is the Feynman {ital x} variable. Negative hadrons with {ital x}{sub {ital F}}{gt}0.10 show no asymmetry, {l angle}cos{phi}{r angle}=0.004{plus minus}0.011. A model which includes parton intrinsic transverse momentum {ital k}{sub {ital t}} reproduces the asymmetry of combined positive and negative hadrons with {ital x}{sub {ital F}}{gt}0.10, {l angle}cos{phi}{r angle}={minus}0.018{plus minus}0.0065, if {l angle}{ital k}{sub {ital t}}{sup 2}{r angle}=0.065{plus minus}0.024 GeV{sup 2}/c{sup 2}. But the model predicts almost equal asymmetries for positive and negative hadrons. The model also agrees poorly with the observed dependence on the kinematic variables {ital x} and {ital Q}{sup 2} if the {ital k}{sub {ital t}} distribution is assumed to be independent of kinematic variables.

Abstract: We present production and decay distributions for the reaction vp ..-->.. ..mu../sup -/p..pi../sup +/ with M/sub ..pi../+/sub p/ .. ..mu../sup -/..delta../sup + +/, but we find evidence for the presence of non-..delta.. amplitudes for Q/sup 2/ > 1 GeV/sup 2/. The data are fitted by various theoretical models. For Q/sup 2/ < 1 GeV/sup 2/ the best fit yields the value M/sub A/ = 1.25/sup +0.15//sub -0.13/ GeV, using a dipole-nucleon axial-vector form factor in Alder's model, although none of these models successfully reproduces the observed ..delta..-decay distributions.

Abstract: An event representing the production and decay of the charmed F+ meson has been identified by means of a 3-constraint fit to decay hypothesis F+ → π+π+π−π0, in which both γ-rays from the π0 converted. The event was produced by a charged current νμ interaction in an emulsion stack located inside the Fermilab 15-foot bubble chamber. The F+ traveled 50 μm, corresponding to a proper time of 1.4 × 10−13 seconds, before decaying in flight. Its mass was determined to be 2017 ± 25MeV.

Abstract: Examination of a sample of 89 high-energy, neutrino-induced dilepton events produced in the Fermilab 15 ft bubble chamber has resulted in the direct observation of the production and visible semi-leptonic decay of short-lived particles. One charged decay, two neutral decays, and one decay candidate of undetermined charge are found. Assuming these events and the remaining dilepton signal result from D meson decays, we obtain τ D + = 2.5 −1.5 +3.5 × 10 −13 s and τ D 0 = 3.5 −1.7 +3.5 × 10 −13 s, using a maximum likelihood analysis.

Abstract: We have developed a method to separate ν n and ν p interactions from antineutrino-neon interactions by using the final state electric charge. We present the distributions of the scaling variables x and y for ν n and ν p interactions separately , along with the ν n and ν p cross section ratios as a function of x and y. We obtain a total ν n to ν p cross section ratio of 0.45± 0.08. Our results are consistent with the predictions of the simple quark parton model.

Abstract: In an exposure of the Fermilab 15-ft bubble chamber to the dichromatic antineutrino beam, 427 ${\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}}_{\ensuremath{\mu}}$ charged-current interactions were obtained. Taking advantage of the small and well understood background flux of ${\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}}_{e}'\mathrm{s}$ in the dichromatic ${\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}}_{\ensuremath{\mu}}$ beam, upper limits on the rates of antineutrino oscillations are obtained, with the precision limited by statistical rather than systematic errors, in contrast to previous experiments. The 90%-C.L. upper limits obtained for the average oscillation probabilities indicated are $P({\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}}_{\ensuremath{\mu}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}}_{e})l6.5\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}3}$ and $P({\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}}_{\ensuremath{\mu}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}}_{\ensuremath{\tau}})l4.4\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}2}$. The mean value of the distance from the neutrino-production point to the bubble chamber divided by the neutrino energy, $〈\frac{l}{E}〉$, is 0.03 m/MeV.

Abstract: We present data on inclusive negative-hadron production from charged-current antineutrino interactions in a 21% Ne-H mixture. Inclusive single-particle distributions are presented and are shown to be insensitive to the momentum transferred to the hadron vertex. Comparisons made to inclusive data from ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}p$ and ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}n$ interactions indicate a close similarity between the hadrons resulting from $\ensuremath{\pi}$-nucleon and $\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}$-nucleus interactions. The general features of the $\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}$-nucleus data are found to be similar to those seen in $\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}p$ interactions. This last observation implies that $\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}p$ and $\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}n$ interactions are similar and that nuclear effects are small.

Abstract: In an exposure of the Fermilab 15-foot neon-hydrogen bubble chamber to a quadrupole triplet neutrino beam, 49 ..mu../sup -/e/sup +/ and 14 ..mu../sup +/e/sup -/ events with e/sup + -/ momenta greater than 0.3 GeV/c have been observed, yielding ..mu..e rates per charged-current event of (0.73 +- 0.11)% and (1.1 +- 0.3)%, respectively. The ..mu../sup -/e/sup +/ rate shows no strong energy dependence in the range from 30 to 300 GeV. The 18 neutral strange particles observed in the 63 events contain 14 K/sup 0//sub S/, 2 ..lambda.., and 2 ..lambda../K/sup 0//sub S/ ambiguities, suggesting that the events are predominantly D-meson production and decay and that the ..lambda../sup +//sub c/..--> lambda..eX branching ratio is very small. The corrected numbers of neutral strange particles per ..mu../sup -/e/sup +/ and ..mu../sup +/e/sup -/ event are 1.2 +- 0.3 and 0.6/sup +0.6//sub -0.3/, respectively. Properties of the events, including strange-particle production, are compared to ..mu../sup - +/..mu../sup + -/ events in the same experiment and to a charm production and decay model, and good agreement is found, apart from a possible enhancement at approx.5--6 GeV/c/sup 2/ in the mass of the system recoiling against the ..mu../sup +/ in ..mu../sup +/e/sup -/ (and ..mu../supmore » +/..mu../sup -/) events. As reported previously, four events show short-lived-particle decays, and D-meson lifetime estimates are reevaluated using the final event sample. One ..mu../sup +/e/sup +/ and three ..mu../sup -/e/sup -/ events were observed. The ..mu../sup -/e/sup -/ events are consistent with background and lead to a ..mu../sup -/e/sup -//..mu../sup -/e/sup +/ ratio of less than 0.07 (90% confidence level) for e/sup + -/ momenta above 0.8 GeV/c. Five candidates for dilepton production by electron neutrinos and antineutrinos in the beam are consistent with approximately 1% rates. No good three-lepton candidates were found, and one, previously reported, four-lepton candidate was found.« less

Abstract: The charged-particle multiplicity distribution from 250-GeV/c ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}p$ interactions in the Fermilab 15-ft bubble chamber is presented. The corrections to the raw data are described. Fits to these data along with other high-energy bubble-chamber data show that cluster models with two components\char22{}a low-multiplicity, diffractive component and a high-multiplicity, nondiffractive component\char22{}describe the data fairly well. The charged multiplicity of each cluster is found to be \ensuremath{\sim}2, while the number of clusters for each component grows linearly with $\mathrm{ln}(s)$. The multiplicity moments are consistent with other experiments. We find $〈{n}_{c}〉=8.427\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.059$, ${f}_{2}^{\mathrm{cc}}=8.66\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.11$, $\frac{〈{n}_{c}〉}{D}=2.038\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.023$. The total inelastic cross section is ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{I}=21.42\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.50$ mb.

Abstract: We analyze a sample of about 2000 charged-current neutrino-proton interactions with neutrino energy greater than 10 GeV produced in the 15 ft. hydrogen bubble chamber at Fermilab using a broad band neutrino beam. We study the details of the hadrons produced and find generally good agreement with the quark-parton model and present parametrizations of quark fragmentation (D) functions. The D functions are found to be independent of Q2 and W (total hadronic mass) for W > 4 GeV, in agreement with the model. The height of the rapidity plateau in the quark (current) fragmentation region is compared to that of the di-quark (target) fragmentation region and the two are found to agree. The mean transverse momentum PT of the hadrons is studied for its Q2 and Feynman-X dependence. We find a sizeable increase of PT2 with Feynman-X which agrees, however, with our longitudinal phase space model. We find no statistically significant dependent of PT2 on Q2, up to Q2 = 64 GeV2, although the highest momentum hadrons are consistent with a mild Q2 dependence. There are no effects of high "primordial" parton momentum apparent in the data. No effects of gluon radiation are found in the Q2 dependence of the phase space density of particle production near zero c.m. rapidity.

Abstract: Experimental results are presented on the reactions Ko p → Qo p and Ko p → Qo p observed in the final state KSo π+ π−p in the momentum range 4 to 12 GeV/c. The data were acquired by exposing the SLAC 1m hydrogen bubble chamber to a neutral beam. Special emphasis is placed on a detailed comparison of the production characteristics of the two strangeness states. Cross sections, differential cross sections, density matrix elements, K∗π mass spectra and exponential slopes of the momentum transfer distributions are presented for Qop and Qop. An important result of this study is the observation of a crossover at −t′ = 0.13±0.03 GeV2 in the differential cross sections. We find that this effect is explained in analogy to elastic scattering by assuming that Regge, as well as pomeron, exchange contributes to Q-production. Calculations with a Reggeized Deck model are also made and we find that such models, as presently formulated, cannot explain the observed behavior of the differential cross sections or the energy dependence of the Q cross section.
