Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of seed crystal size on the rate of nucleation in batch stirred-tank crystallizers. Experimental results confirm the existence of such an effect. Nucleation rate data are correlated with a second-order polynomial in seed crystal size; coefficients of the correlation are functions of the solute-solvent system, crystallizer geometry, and mixing conditions. The empirical correlation is incorporated into a population balance model for determining the nucleation rate in multi-seed crystallizers. The observed results are explained in terms of variations in impact energy, circulation frequency, and target efficiency.

Abstract

The linear growth rate of the (111) face of potassium alum has been evaluated in the presence of quinoline yellow dye. Experimental conditions were such that surface incorporation was controlling the growth rate. The observed influence of the dye on the growth rate was attributed to a blockage of growth sites on the crystal face by adsorbed dye. Using an adsorption isotherm intermediate to those of Langmuir and Freundlich the growth rate was correlated with the dye concentration in parts per million by the equation (G − G ∞ ) (G 0 − G) = 6.76 × 10 5 c -3.41 .

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate contact nucleation for various types of crystalline materials. Selected were aqueous solutions of two hydrated inorganic salts (MgSO4 · 7H2O and KAl(SO4)2 · 12H2O), one nonhydrated inorganic salt (K2SO4) and one organic substance (citric acid). Nucleation data were determined as number of nuclei generated per contact as a function of supersaturation and impact energy. Both of these variables strongly influenced the number of nuclei generated per contact. These data show that crystal growth and contact nucleation are related, with more rapidly growing substances giving higher yields of nuclei.

Abstract

A crystal growth model incorporating the effect of particle size on solubility has been derived and solved numerically for a single spherical crystal growing in a stagnant solution. The solution of the model indicates that the effect of particle size on solubility vanishes after approximately five seconds of growth time. The surface reaction for crystal growth was found to be rate-controlling during early growth when the particle is less than five μ in dia.; diffusion was found to control the crystal growth rate as the particle grows larger. Graphical illustrations of each of these effects are presented. The physical parameters used in this solution are those of the MgSO 4 system.

Abstract

Dynamic stresses in an arbitrarily thick elastic cylinder in an infinite elastic medium during the passage of plane, compressional, harmonically time-varying waves are investigated. Dynamic stresses around the cylinder in the elastic medium are also determined. Numerical results for two different cylinders with ratios of outer radius and inner radius ranging from 1.05 to 1.20 are presented in dimensionless form. It is demonstrated that the maximum dynamic stresses in both the cylinder and the medium are 10% to 20% higher than their corresponding static values. It is noted that the maximum values of dynamic stresses obtained under the harmonically varying waves are identical to the maximum values obtained under the step-pulse loading, both for the unlined cavity and for the thin-shell lining case. Thus, it is believed that the values presented in the paper can be used for design purposes.
