We present 20 years of optical, infrared, and radio monitoring data for BL Lac as well as four simultaneous multifrequency spectra covering the 10^9-10^(18) Hz range. Although there is no time delay between the optical and infrared variability, the high-frequency radio variations precede lower frequency variations, but only by weeks. The optical variability precedes the radio variability by a few years. The structure function for the radio variations is nearly that of shot noise for time scales less than 600 days, in contrast to the optical variation, which is similar to flicker noise. These results indicate that, although there are fundamental differences between the optical and radio emitting regions, they are related, possibly by the propagation of shocks between regions. The multifrequency spectra show that the power per logarithmic bandwidth has a well-defined peak in the near-infrared and a sharp cutoff in the optical-ultraviolet region. This cutoff is like those seen in a few other blazars and is attributed to synchrotron losses that prevent particle acceleration from exceeding a critical energy. The X-ray continuum is not smoothly connected to the optical-ultraviolet emission and has a flatter slope, similar to that of the infrared-millimeter region. In addition, the X-ray emission varied in the same sense as the infrared-millimeter emission but opposite that of the optical-ultraviolet emission. These X-ray properties are those expected from the synchrotron-self-Compton process. The best model suggests that the plasma radiating at ~ 10^(11.5) Hz has a size of ~ 10^(-2·5) pc, a Doppler parameter δ>= 2-3, and a magnetic field of B = 2-40 G.

A new instrument which combines the good energy resolution of the gas scintillation proportional counter with the high position resolution of the microchannel plate is proposed. A study of the factors which determine the combined energy and position resolution of the new instrument is discussed. Submillimeter position resolution along with good energy resolution (8% fwhm at 6 keV) should be achievable.

The problems of developing large-area, gas-scintillation proportional counters with high resolution are considered. It is found that simple large-area, parallel-grid proportional counters suffer from a variation in gain over the counter window. Some success has been achieved in overcoming this problem by focusing the charge cloud as it drifts into the multiplication region. Measurements are reported for various mixtures of argon and xenon as well as pure xenon.

A gas scintillation proportional counter has been constructed for use in detecting subkiloelectron-volt X-rays from cosmic sources. Over a sensitive area of 5 cm2, this instrument has a measured energy resolution of 85 eV (FWHM) at 149 eV. This is significantly better than similarly sized solid state detectors. Rise-time discrimination is used both to reject space background and to reduce low energy noise below 50 eV. The development of an imaging capability for this instrument is discussed.

A rocket observation of two pulsating X-ray binaries, 4U0900-40 and 4U1223-62, found no evidence for periodic or quasiperiodic behavior on time scales down to 2 ms. Evidence for complex high-energy spectral features and intrapulse variability is presented for 4U0900-40.

X-ray observations of the galaxy cluster A496 are presented. Imaging and spectral data, together with the presence of optical filaments, show that radiative cooling is occurring in the cluster core and indicates a mass flow rate of about 200 solar masses per year on to the central galaxy. The gas temperature and density profiles within the core are similar to those in the Perseus cluster (A426) despite a six-fold difference in total X-ray luminosity. This is consistent with the model of Fabian and Nulsen (1977, 1979) for steady flows caused by cooling. The evolution of cooling flows is discussed and it is shown that thermal conduction is suppressed to well below the Spitzer rate.

High quality X-ray spectral and imaging observations of the Cygnus Loop have been obtained with three different instruments. The High Resolution Imager (HRI) on the Einstein Observatory was used to obtain arcsecond resolution images of select bright regions in the Cygnus Loop which permit detailed comparisons between the X-ray, optical, and radio structure of the Loop. The Imaging Proportional Counter (IPC) on the Einstein Observatory was used to obtain an arcminute resolution map of essentially the full Loop structure. Finally, an Imaging Gas Scintillation Proportional Counter (IGSPC), carried aloft by a sounding rocket last fall, obtained modest resolution, spatially resolved spectrophotometry of the Cygnus Loop. An X-ray map of the Loop in the energy of the 0 VIII line was obtained. These data combine to yield a very powerful probe of the abundance, temperature, and density distribution of material in the supernova remnant, and in the interstellar medium.

An improved large-area gas scintillation proportional counter has been built, suitable for use in X-ray astronomy. This counter employs electron focusing in a drift region to achieve uniform response. We show that we can obtain a spectral resolution of 9.1% FWHM at 5.9 keV over a useful area of 100 cm2. We demonstrate that signal rise-time discrimination can be used to reject non-X-ray background as efficiently as in ordinary proportional counters.

Observations of the Trapezium region in the Orion Nebula obtained with the high-resolution x-ray imaging instrument on board the Einstein Observatory reveal at least 58 sources of x-ray emission. All but two of the sources can be identified with visible stars. The strongest x-ray source is the star Theta(1)C, which excites the emission nebula. Its x-ray luminosity is 6 x 10(32) ergs per second. The rest of the x-ray sources may be identified with stars of all spectral types. Strong x-ray emission is not observed from members of the infrared cluster embedded within the Orion molecular cloud.

A broad band X-ray imaging spectrophotometer (BBXRIS) has been built for astrophysical studies. The BBXRIS is based on a large-imaging gas scintillation proportional counter (LIGSPC), a combination of a gas scintillation proportional counter and a multiwire proportional counter, which achieves 8% (FWHM) energy resolution and 1.5-mm (FWHM) spatial resolution at 5.9 keV. The LIGSPC can be integrated with a grazing incidence mirror and a coded aperture mask to provide imaging over a broad range of X-ray energies. The results of tests involving the LIGSPC and a code aperture mask are presented, and possible applications of the BBXRIS are discussed. >

Six quasars have been discovered in a 0.43 sq deg field surrounding NGC 1097. The quasars are grouped in a small area of the field: five of the quasars lie within the area defined by the jets emanating from the galaxy. Four of the quasars are clearly detected in a deep X-ray map of the field. The probability of finding such an unusual configuration is discussed.

X-ray observations of the Horologium supercluster are examined. Results show that the optically Coma-like cluster CA 0340-538 has a smooth X-ray structure which also resembles that of Coma. The density structure of its X-ray emitting gas, determined in a model-independent way, is found to be remarkably featureless, being consistent with a nearly isothermal polytrope out to approximately 2 Mpc from the cluster center. The total mass of the gas is determined to exceed 10% of the cluster virial mass and may contribute a substantial fraction of the cluster binding mass. Although CA 0329-527 is found to be an X-ray double cluster, its structure appears to be confused. CA 0325-539 is found to show no substantial X-ray emission. An upper limit of 1.3 x 10 to the 44th erg/s is determined for any diffuse 2-10 keV emission from the Horologium supercluster.

An improved, large-area (285 cm2), gas scintillation proportional counter with a measured overall energy resolution of 9.3% (fwhm) at 5.9 keV has been built. The rise-time resolution, 11.6% (fwhm) at 5.9 keV, of this counter is sufficiently well defined to allow the use of pulse-shape discrimination to reject 86% of the non-X-ray events in a space environment, while accepting 80% of the true X-ray events. This counter thus represents a significant advancement over conventional gas proportional counters and should prove extremely useful for X-ray astronomy.

Multiwire proportional counters with 1 ?m polypropylene windows, of dimensions 75 mm × 75 mm and 100 mm × 100 mm, have been built to map soft cosmic X-rays. The counters are constructed with a large drift region which allows us to use the center-of-gravity technique to improve the counter's efficiency and position resolution. Using 330 Torr of propane as the gas fill and an anode plane composed of 20 ?m diameter, gold-plated tungsten wire spaced 1 mm apart, we have achieved a position resolution of better than 280 ?m (FWHM) in two orthogonal directions at an X-ray energy of 0.94 keV.

An intrinsic energy resolution of 26+or-2 keV has been measured for the 976-keV conversion electrons of a /sup 207/Bi source in a gridded ionization chamber filled with pure liquid argon, at a drift field of 11 kV-cm/sup -1/. The measurement of the /sup 207/Bi spectrum at different electric fields was repeated several times, with very-good liquid purity and optimized chamber geometry, reproducing the results. Data were also taken with a xenon-doped liquid argon filling in an attempt to improve the resolution. Enhanced ionization was observed as expected from the presence of excitons in liquid argon, but there was no improvement in the energy resolution. It is shown that the data are consistent with the assumption that recombination straggling from low-energy delta electrons, produced abundantly along the path of the primary ionizing particle, is mostly responsible for the degraded experimental resolution. >

The X-ray properties of 111 catalogued quasars have been examined with the imaging proportional counter on board the Einstein Observatory. Thirty-five of the objects, of redshift between 0.064 and 3.53, were detected as X-ray sources. The 0.5–4.5-ke V X-ray properties of these quasars are correlated with their optical and radio continuum properties and with their redshifts and variability characteristics. The X-ray luminosity of quasars tends to be highest for those objects which are bright in both the optical and radio regimes and which exhibit optically violent variability. These observations suggest that quasars should be divided into two classes on the basis of radio luminosities, spectra, evolution and underlying morphology and, thus, that quasars can make up a significant portion of the diffuse soft X-ray background only if the slope of the optical quasar log N–log S relation is steeper than 2 to mB ≍21.5.

New observations of solar flare and active region X-ray spectra obtained with the Columbia University instrument on OSO-8 are presented and discussed. The high sensitivity of the graphite crystal panel has allowed both line and continuum spectra to be observed with moderate spectral resolution. Observations with higher spectral resolution have been made with a panel of pentaerythritol crystals. Twenty-nine lines between 1.5 and 7.0 A have been resolved and identified, including several dielectronic recombination satellite lines to Si xiv and Si xiii lines which have been observed for the first time. It has been found that thermal continuum models specified by single values of temperature and emission measure have fitted the data adequately, there being good agreement with the values of these parameters derived from line intensity ratios.

A system of optical filaments has been discovered surrounding the central galaxy in the X-ray cluster A496. This suggests that the intracluster gas in A496 is cooling and being accreted by that galaxy. Observations of the X-ray surface brightness and spectrum support this interpretation.

X-ray astronomy has reached sufficient maturity to demand at least moderate angular resolution light-gathering telescopes to accompany detector development. Keeping the cost of such telescopes within the budget of low-cost flight opportunities such as sounding rockets and SPARTAN missions is a substantial challenge. We have developed a program of precision diamond mirror turning, mechanical polishing, lacquer coating, and metal deposition which produces x-ray telescopes with minute of arc angular resolution at moderate cost. We describe the process and report calibration results for a 80 cm (31.4 in.) diam Wolter I telescope flown aboard an Aries sounding rocket.

For many years, thin‐window, single‐wire gas proportional counters were the only general‐purpose detectors available for nondispersive spectroscopy of low energy X‐rays. Their large area, low background, and coarse energy resolving capabilities, combined with their low cost, long lifetime, and ease of operation, mae them the workhorse instrument. During the last decade, solid state detectors and, more recently, gas scintillation proportional counters, have slowly replaced the standard gas proportional counter in many applications. Small are (0.2 cm2) Si(Li) detectors with 150 eV of FWHM noise have been used for fluorescence specctroscopy above 1 keV. However, their small area and cryogenic operation make these detectors less than ideal. Moreover, the nose in the associated electronics make these detectors useless below 0.4 keV. Gas sintillation proportional counters have now been developed to the point where they are the instrument of choice below 1 keV. Large are (≳100 cm2) counters with high sensitivity and low noise may be made relatively easily and inexpensively. Resolution sufficient to separate the nitrogen and oxygen K‐fluorescence lines have been achievd. Used with micron thin polypropylene windows, these counters have achieved 57% (FWHM) resolution at 149 eV sulfur L line. In addition, we have demonstrated that submillimeter imaging is possible with the gas scintillation proportional counter attached to a multiwire proportional counter. This paper will concentrate on a discussion of the principle of operation and design, and achieved levels of performance for the gas scintillation proportional counter. Where appropriate, their operation and performance will be compared to standard gas proportional counters and solid state detectors.

Observations of solar X-ray flares with a graphite-crystal spectrometer aboard the OSO 8 satellite are discussed. The development of the temperature and emission measure of a typical subflare is examined, and the temperature dependence of three Si satellite line systems is derived. Possible electron densities in the range between 10 to the 13th power and 10 to the 14th power per cu cm are determined from the intensities of He-like lines. The results indicate that it is always possible to fit a single-temperature model during all phases of flares and suggest that the energy in a coronal soft X-ray event is injected on time scales of minutes rather than instantaneously.

We have investigated the continuum properties of the superluminal quasar 3C 345 with monitoring studies at radio, optical, infrared, and X-ray frequencies as well as with simultaneous multifrequency spectra extending from the radio through the X-ray bands. Variability occurs more rapidly and with greater amplitude toward shorter wavelengths in the infrared-optical region (0.4-100 μm). Radio outbursts, which appear to follow infrared-optical outbursts by about a year, occur first at the highest frequencies, as expected from optical depth effects, although the peak flux is often reached at several frequencies at once. The beginning of outbursts as defined by millimeter measurements corresponds to the appearance of the three known "superluminal" components. An increase in the X-ray flux during 1979-1980 corresponds to increased radio flux, while the infrared flux changes in the opposite sense. The multifrequency spectra show that the nearly flat radio continuum steepens at 10^(11)-10^(12) Hz and has a power-law slope of -0.91 ± 0.04 from 350 to 20 μm that steepens to -1.40 ± 0.02 at 20 μm-1200 A. A "blue bump" is detected at rest wavelengths 4000-1500 A. The X-ray emission has a flatter slope (-0.7) than the infrared-ultraviolet continuum and lies above an extrapolation of that continuum to X-ray energies. This supports the finding from variability that the X-ray emission is not simply connected to the optical emission. Although the shape of the infrared-ultraviolet continuum is generally preserved during flux variations, slope variations occur and are most common in the ultraviolet region. Most of the total power (3 x 10^(47) ergs s ^(-1)) emerges in the submillimeter-optical region but about one-sixth of the power is emitted at X-ray and radio.

A sample of 74 clusters of galaxies from the Abell catalog has been observed with the Einstein Observatory. Fifty-three of the clusters were detected. X-ray luminosities and core radii have been measured, and possible correlations between these parameters and optical and radio cluster parameters have been examined. The results are consistent with a thermal bremsstrahlung model for the X-ray emission in which a significant fraction of the gas has been supplied by ram-pressure stripping. In addition, the X-ray luminosity function of clusters has been calculated, and it is shown that clusters contribute approximately 10 percent to the soft X-ray background in the 0.5-4.0 keV band.

An imaging gas scintillation proportional counter (IGSPC) at the focal plane of a grazing incidence telescope was carried aloft by a sounding rocket and used to observe soft X-ray emission from the supernova remnant SN 1006. The instrument obtained the first unambiguous detection of strong (8 + or 0.0-2 photons/sq cm s) oxygen He-alpha and Ly-alpha emission at 0.59 + or - 0.02 keV from SN 1006. This line emission is consistent with emission from a 1.8 x 10 to the 6th K plasma, although hard X-ray emission from an additional power law or a higher temperature component was also observed. The X-ray emission may be interpreted as due to either (1) a combination of blast-wave and reverse shock assuming equilibrium ionization in the plasma or (2) blast-wave emission alone with a significant degree of ionization disequilibrium.

The 1974 November 3 (UT) lunar occultation of the Crab Nebula has been observed in the 1.5--17.5 keV X-ray range, at a position angle of 255degree. The western portion of the nebula and the pulsar NP 0532 were seen in reappearance. Analysis of the data reveals that the western extent of the X-ray volume is approximately 48'' west of the pulsar. The centroid of the nonpulsed X-ray flux for the portion of the nebula observed is located about 20'' west of the pulsar, and the FWHM of the best-fitting Gaussian distribution is 42''plus-or-minus2'' in the observed energy range. Scorpius X-1 was observed with the Bragg crystal polarimeters aboard OSO 8 in August 1977 and again in August 1978. An analysis of these observations reveals a time-averaged polarization of 0.39% plus or minus 0.20% at 2.6 keV and 1.31% plus or minus 0.40% at 5.2 keV. The corresponding position angles are 29 deg plus or minus 10 deg and 57 deg plus or minus 6 deg, respectively. Binary phase-dependent polarization was searched for but not observed.

A single 3.5 hour observation on 1979 March 6 with the imaging proportional counter aboard the Einstein Observatory has revealed the presence of numerous low-luminosity (10 to the 31st ergs/s) X-ray sources in a region centered near the Trapezium in the Orion Nebula. In addition to the Trapezium, 22 discrete sources have been detected in a 1 x 1 deg field at or above the 4 sigma level. These sources are clearly associated with star formation, as indicated by the similarity of their spatial distribution with that of the nebular variables, a class of pre-main-sequence stars. Because the field is quite crowded, however, individual identifications of these sources are difficult. In addition to the discrete sources, there is evidence for diffuse or unresolved emission from two ridges extending 16 deg to the north and 15 deg to the west of the Trapezium. The nature of the discrete sources and of the diffuse emission is discussed.

Results are reported for various sets of X-ray, UV, visual, IR, millimeter, and radio observations of OJ 287. The spectral information is used to constrain nonthermal energy production models for the source, and three possible models are considered. It is found that, in order to describe all the observed flux in the radio to X-ray bands with a synchrotron self-Compton model, a high degree of relativistic beaming is required such that the equivalent Doppler factor ranges from about 20 to 165. It is concluded that submillimeter flux and X-ray spectral measurements could distinguish between the two possible models that fit the present observations.

X-ray Fe line emission from Cyg X-3 was detected at an energy of 6.52 +- 0.08 keV with the graphite crystal spectrometer on OSO 8. The measured line energy indicates emission from moderately ionized Fe with a line strength of 0.0097 +- 0.0043 photons (cm/sup 2/ s)/sup -1/, corresponding to an equivalent width of 220 +- 100 eV. 2 figures, 2 tables.

The equilibrium distribution of the elements for the case of an isothermal plasma in a gravitational potential well is given governing equations and a rapidly converging iterative procedure for their solution. Results are applied to the intracluster gas in clusters of galaxies, and implications are identified for the controversy as to whether iron nuclei settle out in the cluster core, and with respect to the interpretation of distribution size and shape for continuum X-ray emission from clusters. A model for the Coma cluster is considered in which the intracluster gas is in equilibrium and partially processed. It is found that this model can account for the angular dependence of the continuum X-ray emission from Coma, as determined by Einstein Observatory observations, at least as well as the uniform composition model.

Two sets of simultaneous spectra consisting of data obtained with radio, IR, optical, UV and X-ray telescopes were obtained 10 months apart for the X-ray bright BL Lac object IZw 187. In addition, nonsimultaneous observations were made in several of the aforementioned observing bands in order to detect flux variations and galactic light contamination was removed from all observations. The BL Lac component is found to have a weak 3000 A bump superposed on an IR-optical-UV spectrum of slope 0.9. Consistent with the arising of the IR-through-X-ray continuum from a single synchrotron source, the X-ray data fall on or near an extrapolation of this power law. No flux variations have been detected in the flat radio spectrum. Optical and X-ray fluxes are observed to vary by a factor not greater than three, and the shortest variability time scales in these bands are comparable at about one week.

Walter and Kuhi (1981) have shown that at least 10 out of 12 T Tauri stars brighter than m(v) = 12.5 are X-ray emitters. The X-ray luminosities of these stars, L(x), are often close to the detection threshold value. One of the principal results of the present investigation is the evidence for at least a weak correlation between L(x) and V(R) sin i. If it is assumed that results obtained concerning stars in the Orion Ic Association are representative of other stellar fields, it appears that along with the RS CVn stars, pre-main-sequence G stars are among the most X-ray luminous late-type stars on the H-R diagram. A second conclusion is that the X-rays are almost certainly produced by flares and/or thin coronae close to the stellar surface.

In each of the present four simultaneous spectra covering the radio-through-X-ray regimes, the IR-UV synchrotron continuum dominates the total observed power and presumably becomes opague between 10 to the 11th and 10 to the 13th Hz. Nonsimultaneous observations were also conducted, over a longer time period, in order to study long- and short-term variability at X-ray, optical, and radio frequencies. These data indicate that the rapid and dramatic variations evident at IR and optical wavelengths are absent at radio and X-ray frequencies, supporting a view of IR-UV flux emanation from a small region, while the X-rays are produced by the inverse Compton process in the radio-emitting region. Particles, photons and magnetic field may not be far from equipartition in this region. Theoretical suggestions are developed regarding the radial behavior of the electron density and magnetic field.

The imaging instruments on the Einstein Observatory were used to study the detailed X-ray structure of the Cygnus Loop. An arc minute resolution map of the 0.1-4.0 keV emission from the entire remnant was obtained with the imaging proportional counter (IPC). The bright northeastern and western limbs were mapped with the high resolution imager (HRI). The large-scale structure of the Loop is well modeled as a limb-brightened shell of hot gas at 2 x 10 to the 6th K created by the expansion of a blast wave into an inhomogeneous interstellar medium. The pulse-height data from the IPC indicate that the center of the remnant is generally hotter than the limb with temperatures as high as 4 x 10 to the 6th K. The X-ray maps show good general correlation with large-scale radio and optical structure, and in some cases good detailed correlation with faint optical filaments dominated by hydrogen line emission.

The size of the x-ray emitting region in the Crab Nebula observed during the 1974 December 28 (UT) lunar occultation at p.a.=300degree is found to decrease with increasing photon energy. A power law fitted to the source size versus energy with an exponent ..gamma..= -0.148 +- 0.012 agrees with the optical and x-ray data but does not predict the observed size and energy dependence in the radio region. Consideration of the effects of interstellar grains indicates that scattering does not contribute appreciably to the observed nebular size variation. The results are used to interpret theoretical models based on diffusion and bulk transport processes for electrons in the nebula. Energy spectral parameters for different regions of the nebula are also derived from the x-ray data. (AIP)

A search for continuous X-ray emission from the pulsar NP 0532 has been performed using lunar occultations and high temporal resolution. No increase in the nonpulsed phase of the flux from the Crab Nebula was observed when NP 0532 was exposed. The result is used to establish an upper limit of 4.7 million K (99% confidence) on the surface temperature of the neutron star.

It is estimated that the local volume density of BL Lac objects which emit greater than 10 to the 44th ergs/s in the 0.5-4.5 keV band is about 10 to the -7th/cu Mpc. This is based on identifications of bright X-ray sources, and the fact that Einstein X-ray observations detect BL Lac objects over a wide, continuous range of flux up to the thresholds of the all-sky X-ray surveys. Since this density is of the same order of magnitude as the local density of Seyfert galaxies, or local density of optically selected quasars, emitting X-rays at the same luminosity, we argue that the difference between these particular astronomical classifications is not solely due to the orientation of a relativistic beam.

The 1.9 A feature, observed in the X-ray spectra of three solar flares with the Columbia University and Lockheed Palo Alto Research Laboratory spectrometers on the OSO 8 satellite, is shown to be due to a blend of 1s-2p transitions in a range of Fe ions. In the temperature range 9-16 x -10 to the 6th K, the feature has a mean wavelength of 1.900 + or - 0.009 A and is 0.04 A wider than a single line, indicating that the main contributors are Fe XIX-Fe XXII. Most of the emission originates from the dielectronic recombination process, and when inner-shell excitation is included together with normal collisional excitation, the observed intensity of the feature can be accounted for adequately. For these events, if the electron density is below approximately 10 to the 12th/cu cm, deviations from ionization equilibrium will be significant for ions more highly ionized than Fe XXI.

Large-area proportional counters sensitive from 0.6 to 23 keV were used to observe about 3 min of pulsed X-ray emission from NP 0532 during two lunar-occultation experiments. A detailed pulse profile with 65-microsec resolution shows that the X-ray primary-pulse shape is essentially identical to its optical counterpart. Spectral data on the pulsed X-ray emission are presented. A pulse-by-pulse examination of the data shows no evidence for temporal variability.

We present observations of 3C 371, made at frequencies from the radio to the ultraviolet, which were coordinated during two short time intervals separated by 3 months. We also present 1 keV X-ray flux densities measured at a different time. The multifrequency measurements indicate spectral steepening at visual wavelengths, and that an extrapolation of the ultraviolet continuum falls below the X-ray data. We explain the infrared through X-ray data as relativistically beamed synchrotron self-Compton emission and derive source parameters for two possible models. Our ultraviolet spectra both show strong Lyɑ emission at the same redshift as weak optical emission lines reported previously. We favor production of these lines by recombination of gas after its ionization by the ultraviolet to X-ray continuum radiation. We tentatively identify C IV and N v absorption lines in one of our ultraviolet spectra, which, if real, suggest the presence of a hot (~ 3 x 10^5 K) gaseous halo in 3C 371.
