The polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) affects 5-10% of all premenopausal women. It is diagnosed by a combination of oligo-amenorrhea and hyperandrogenism (NIH criteria) or by the presence of two out of three of: oligo-amenorrhea, hyperandrogenism, polycystic ovaries on ultrasound (Rotterdam criteria). PCOS is associated with obesity, insulin resistance and dyslipidemia. Different patterns of dyslipidemia can be present, both in lean and obese PCOS. Low HDL-cholesterol, with or without elevated TG, is the most prominent lipid abnormality. In addition, smaller HDL and LDL particles and elevated postprandial TG responses are reported. Hyperandrogenism, anovulation and insulin resistance affect multiple steps in lipid metabolism in PCOS, as will be discussed. Surrogate markers for atherosclerosis are consistently abnormal in PCOS, while studies on clinical CVD endpoints are limited and non-conclusive. The (pharmaco-) therapy of dyslipidemia in PCOS will be discussed. In addition, the effects of other PCOS related (pharmaco-) therapies, primarily aimed at hyperandrogenism, anovulation or insulin resistance, on lipid metabolism will be addressed.

For two settings of a crystal, given four sets of corresponding indices, the compatible transformation equations are derived. The four sets may be face indices, edge indices or a mixed group of four sets.

Summary A method is described for obtaining an image of the zero-order reciprocal net plane without any distortion of the picture. This may be important, as all rays reflected by the crystal travel to the film along paths of equal length. Apart from the fact, that they reach the film at a constant angle, which can be adjusted so as to suit any special demands, the intermediate distances between the reciprocal net points on the photography can also be varied. These features render the method useful for the comparison of intensities. For research work on fibres it may also be of some use.

Websky gave a crystallographic method to find the crystal elements from the angle measurements between four arbitrary crystal faces, using the Gauss-Miller relation on anharmonic ratios of four tautozonal faces. We extend this relation to five arbitrary faces and apply it to the same problem.

In a combined study of the Free University, Amsterdam and the Semmelweis Medical University, Budapest, the presence of epithelial dysplasia was studied in 100 cases of oral lichen planus. The criteria of epithelial dysplasia which were used in this study correspond with those reported by the WHO Collaborating Centre for Oral Precancerous Lesions in 1978. In approximately 25% of all cases, moderate or at least mild dysplasia was observed. The number of dysplastic changes per section did not show any significant correlation with the clinical type, nor with age or sex. There were no marked differences between the Amsterdam and Budapest material. Long-term data on the follow-up were not available yet. No comment can therefore be given about the meaning of the finding of epithelial dysplasia in lichen planus being a sign of premalignancy or not.

SOMETIMES a conical camera has been used to obtain good pictures of high-order layer-lines from a rotating crystal, the angle of the cone in most cases being about 60° or 90°.
