Single-neutron and single-proton removal cross sections have been measured for medium-mass neutron-rich nuclei around Z=50 and energies around 1000A MeV using the FRagment Separator (FRS) at GSI. The measured cross sections confirm the relative low values of the proton-removal cross sections, observed since a long time ago and not yet understood. Model calculations considering the knock-out process together with initial- and final-state interactions describe the measured neutron-removal cross sections. Proton-removal cross sections are, however, significantly over-predicted by the same calculations. The observed difference can be explained to a large extent by the knock-out of short-range correlated nucleons from dominant neutron-proton pairs in neutron-rich nuclei.

The production cross sections of neutron-rich fission residues in reactions induced by U238 projectiles at 950A MeV impinging on Pb and Be targets are investigated at the Fragment Separator at GSI. These two targets allow us to investigate fission processes induced by two reaction mechanisms, Coulomb and nuclear excitations, and to study the role of these mechanisms in the neutron excess of the final fragments. © 2019 American Physical Society.

International audience; Neutron- and proton-removal cross sections for nuclei around ^132Sn have been systematically measured. The measurements clearly show the effect of the N = 82 closed shells. Model calculations describing all processes leading to single nucleon removal residual nuclei provide a reasonable description of the neutron removal process but clearly overestimate the proton removal ones. This overestimation of the proton removal channels could be explained as due to the presence of short-range correlated neutron-proton pairs in nuclei.

We present a new experimental method to correlate the isotopic composition of intermediate mass fragments (IMF) emitted at midrapidity in semiperipheral collisions with the emission timescale: IMFs emitted in the early stage of the reaction show larger values of (N/Z) isospin asymmetry, stronger angular anisotropies, and reduced odd-even staggering effects in neutron to proton ratio (N/Z) distributions than those produced in sequential statistical emission. All these effects support the concept of isospin “migration”, that is sensitive to the density gradient between participant and quasispectator nuclear matter, in the so called neck fragmentation mechanism. By comparing the data to a stochastic mean field (SMF) simulation we show that this method gives valuable constraints on the symmetry energy term of nuclear equation of state at subsaturation densities. An indication emerges for a linear density dependence of the symmetry energy.

The fragmentation of neutron-rich Sn 132 nuclei produced in the fission of U 238 projectiles at 950 A MeV has been investigated at the FRagment Separator (FRS) at GSI. This work represents the first investigation of fragmentation of medium-mass radioactive projectiles with a large neutron excess. The measured production cross sections of the residual nuclei are relevant for the possible use of a two-stage reaction scheme (fission + fragmentation) for the production of extremely neutron-rich medium-mass nuclei in future rare-ion-beam facilities. Moreover, the new data will provide a better understanding of the “memory” effect in fragmentation reactions.

Matière Nucléaire NIM; Semiperipheral collisions in the $^{124}$Sn+${64}Ni reaction at 35 MeV/nucleon were studied using the forward part of the Charged Heavy Ion Mass and Energy Resolving Array. Nearly completely determined ternary events involving projectilelike fragments (PLF), targetlike fragments (TLF), and intermediate mass fragments (IMF) were selected. A new method of studying the reaction mechanism, focusing on the analysis of the correlations between relative velocities in the IMF+PLF and IMF+TLF subsystems, is proposed. The relative velocity correlations provide information on the time sequence and time scale of the neck fragmentation processes leading to production of IMFs. It is shown that the majority of light IMFs are produced within 40–80 fm/c after the system starts to reseparate. Heavy IMFs are formed at times of about 120 fm/c or later and can be viewed as resulting from two-step (sequential) neck rupture processes.

Background: In heavy-ion collisions at intermediate energies the production of light charged particles and intermediate mass fragments (IMFs) is due to different reaction mechanisms and different time scales, ranging from fast dynamical processes to statistical emission from the equilibrated system.Purpose: We compare the IMF statistical and dynamical emission probabilities in collisions of a neutron-rich $^{124}\mathrm{Sn}+^{64}\mathrm{Ni}$ system and a neutron-poor $^{112}\mathrm{Sn}+^{58}\mathrm{Ni}$ system at the laboratory energy of 35 $A$ MeV.Method: The IMFs production mechanism in semiperipheral reactions has been investigated in our previous works. In this paper, the analysis is expanded for the same set of data and production cross sections have been evaluated for dynamical and statistical emission in a coherent way for light and heavy fragments. Results: The data analysis has evidenced a strong competition between dynamical and statistical emission mechanisms. Probability of the dynamical emission of IMFs is strongly influenced by the ($N/Z$) ratio of the colliding system. Conclusions: It is demonstrated that the statistical emission is equally probable for the two systems, while the dynamical emission is enhanced for the neutron-rich system, especially for heavy fragments ($Z\ensuremath{\ge}6$). The observed effect points at a high sensitivity of the prompt-dynamical emission to the ($N/Z$) ratio of a given system.

The new detector CHIMERA, in its final 4π configuration, has been installed at Laboratori Nazionali del Sud (LNS) in Catania in January 2003. Beams of different energies ranging from protons to Au ions were delivered by the Tandem and the Super Conducting Cyclotron for nuclear reaction studies, in agreement with the approval of the Scientific Advisory Committee of LNS. Recent experimental results confirm very low energy thresholds of the trigger (below 0.5 MeV/nucleon), ensured within a wide dynamical range. Good characteristics of identification of light charged particles and heavy fragments have been obtained by using three detection techniques: Δ E-E , Δ E -time of flight, and the Pulse-Shape discrimination method. We present results of recent analysis concerning the production of intermediate mass fragments (IMF) in semi-peripheral collisions. Our results combined with theoretical Boltzmann-Nordheim-Vlasov simulations clearly demonstrate the presence of very fast processes of IMF production in the overlapping region of the target and projectile nuclei during re-separation, i.e. in the time scale comparable with the collision time. Evidence for slower, sequential-like production of IMF's is also shown.

A quantitative comparison is made between the absolute cross sections associated with statistical and dynamical emission of heavy fragments in the 124Sn+64Ni and 112Sn+58Ni collisions experimentally investigated at 35A MeV beam energy using the multidetector CHIMERA. The result shows that the dynamical process is about twice as probable in the neutron-rich 124Sn+64Ni system as in the 112Sn+58Ni neutron-poor one. This unexpected and significant difference indicates that the reaction mechanism is strongly dependent on the entrance-channel isospin (N/Z) content.

A new method of particle identification and energy calibration is proposed for phoswich detectors consisting of a fast plastic scintillator optically coupled to a CsI(Tl) crystal. In this method, functional relationships between integrated yields of three properly selected portions of the observed composite light output signal are parameterized in terms of three physical components (overlapping in time) of this signal. Then, a complete set of calibration constants is derived, linking these integrated partial yields to particle atomic numbers ( Z ) and energies ( E ). The calibration is based on the correlations between partial yields observed in actual data from the physics or “production” runs, and energy deposits calculated for detector elements. The method is found suitable for a wide range of incident particle species and energies, largely eliminating the need for costly and time-consuming conventional calibration experiments with a variety of beams, targets, and bombarding energies.

CHIMERA is a 4π multidetector for charged particles available at Laboratori Nazionali del Sud (INFN‐LNS). A new method to measure the time scale of the emission of nuclear fragments is described, together with some applications in the field of the isospin dynamics of heavy‐ion collisions. Competition between fusion‐like and binary reactions near the energy threshold for nuclear multifragmentation is discussed. Opportunities are pointed out to use the detector at low and intermediate energies using the kinematical‐coincidence method.

International audience; Multi-breakup processes for the $^{124}$Sn+$^{64}$Ni system at 35 MeV/nucleon have been studied with the forward part of the CHIMERA detector. An extensive comparison between experimental data corresponding to almost complete ternary events and constrained molecular dynamics (CoMD-II) calculations suggests different characteristic times in the selected processes. This is in agreement with previous studies of the same reaction already published concerning the prompt intermediate-mass-fragment emission. Stimulated by CoMD-II calculations, we investigate the existence of more complex dynamical multi-breakup processes occurring on the same time scale. A detailed study of the rotational dynamics leading to slower dynamical fission processes is also presented.

We present a new experimental method to correlate the isotopic composition of intermediate mass fragments (IMF) emitted at midrapidity in semiperipheral collisions with the emission timescale: IMFs emitted in the early stage of the reaction show larger values of $\ensuremath{\langle}N/Z\ensuremath{\rangle}$ isospin asymmetry, stronger angular anisotropies, and reduced odd-even staggering effects in neutron to proton ratio $\ensuremath{\langle}N/Z\ensuremath{\rangle}$ distributions than those produced in sequential statistical emission. All these effects support the concept of isospin ``migration'', that is sensitive to the density gradient between participant and quasispectator nuclear matter, in the so called neck fragmentation mechanism. By comparing the data to a stochastic mean field (SMF) simulation we show that this method gives valuable constraints on the symmetry energy term of nuclear equation of state at subsaturation densities. An indication emerges for a linear density dependence of the symmetry energy.

An interesting process of violent reseparation of a heavy nuclear system into three or four fragments of comparable size was recently observed in {sup 197}Au+{sup 197}Au collisions at 15 MeV/nucleon. Combined analysis of the binary deep inelastic events and the ternary and quaternary breakup events demonstrates that the newly observed ternary and quaternary reactions belong to the same wide class of deep inelastic collisions as the conventional (binary) damped reactions. It is shown that the ternary and quaternary breakup reactions occur at extremely inelastic collisions corresponding to small impact parameters, while more peripheral collisions lead to well-known binary deep inelastic reactions.

A quantitative comparison is made between the absolute cross sections associated with statistical and dynamical emission of heavy fragments in the {sup 124}Sn+{sup 64}Ni and {sup 112}Sn+{sup 58}Ni collisions experimentally investigated at 35A MeV beam energy using the multidetector CHIMERA. The result shows that the dynamical process is about twice as probable in the neutron-rich {sup 124}Sn+{sup 64}Ni system as in the {sup 112}Sn+{sup 58}Ni neutron-poor one. This unexpected and significant difference indicates that the reaction mechanism is strongly dependent on the entrance-channel isospin (N/Z) content.

The production cross sections of neutron-rich fission residues produced in reactions induced by a 238U beam impinging onto Pb and Be targets were investigated at the Fragment Separator (FRS) at GSI using the inverse kinematic technique. These data allowed us to discuss the optimum energies in fission for producing the most neutron-rich residues.

Collisions of a very heavy nonfusing nuclear system $^{197}\mathrm{Au}$$+$$^{197}\mathrm{Au}$ were studied at an energy of $15$ MeV/nucleon. An interesting process of violent reseparation of this heavy system into three or four fragments of comparable size was observed. In the case of ternary partitioning, either the projectile-like fragment (PLF) or target-like fragment (TLF) breaks up almost collinearly with the PLF-TLF separation axis. In the case of quaternary reactions, both PLF and TLF were observed breaking up along this direction. By comparison with a dynamical model of deep inelastic collisions it was concluded that the ternary and quaternary reactions occur in semiperipheral collisions, in a range of angular momenta corresponding to about $0.5--0.7$ of the maximum $L$ value for grazing collisions. The time elapsing from the scission of the binary PLF $+$ TLF system to the secondary scission of PLF or TLF was estimated to be of about $70--80$ fm/$c$ for the ternary reactions and $80--100$ fm/$c$ for the quaternary reactions.

Experimental multidimensional joint distributions of neutrons and charged reaction products were analyzed for 136 Xe + 209 Bi reactions at E/A = 28, 40, and 62 MeV and were found to exhibit several different types of prominent correlation patterns. Some of these correlations have a simple explanation in terms of the system excitation energy and pose little challenge to most statistical decay theories. However, several other types of correlation patterns are difficult to reconcile with some, but not other, possible reaction scenarios. In this respect, correlations between the average atomic numbers of intermediate-mass fragments, on the one hand, and light particle multiplicities, on the other, are notable. This kind of multiparticle correlation provides a useful tool for probing reaction scenarios, which is different from the traditional approach of interpreting inclusive yields of individual reaction products.

The radial evolution of the matter distributions with neutron excess has been investigated at GSI measuring total interaction cross sections for long isotopic chains of medium-mass nuclei. Comparisons with different model calculations show a clear increase of the total interaction cross sections for the most neutron-rich nuclei that we interpret as a signature for a larger matter radius of those nuclei. 10th International Conference on Nucleus-Nucleus Collisions (NN2009), Aug 16-21, 2009, Beijing, Peoples R China

International audience; A quantitative comparison regarding absolute cross sections associated to Statistical and Dynamical Fission processes in the 124Sn+64Ni and 112Sn+58Ni collisions experimentally investigated at 35 AMeV beam energy using multi-detector CHIMERA is presented. It results that Dynamical Fission process is about two times more probable in the neutron rich 124Sn+64Ni system than in the 112Sn+58Ni neutron poor one. The observed difference could indicate an influence of the entrance channel Isospin (N/Z) content on the reaction mechanisms.

Heavy-ion collisions often produce fusion barrier distributions with structures displaying a fingerprint of couplings to highly collective excitations. Similar distributions can be obtained from large-angle quasielastic scattering, although in this case, the role of the many weak direct-reaction channels is unclear. For $^{20}\mathrm{Ne}+^{90}\mathrm{Zr}$, we have observed the barrier structures expected for the highly deformed neon projectile; however, for $^{20}\mathrm{Ne}+^{92}\mathrm{Zr}$, we find significant extra absorption into a large number of noncollective inelastic channels. This leads to smearing of the barrier distribution and a consequent reduction in the ``resolving power'' of the quasielastic method.

The production cross sections of neutron‐rich fission residues produced in reactions induced by a 238U beam impinging onto Pb and Be targets were investigated at the Fragment Separator (FRS) at GSI. These data allowed us to discuss the optimum energies in fission for producing the most neutron‐rich residues.

A new reaction mechanism of violent reseparation of a heavy nucleus-nucleus system, {sup 197}Au+{sup 197}Au, into three or four massive fragments in collisions at 15 MeV/nucleon has been observed. After reseparation, the fragments are almost exactly aligned, thus showing a very short time scale of the reseparation process, of about 70-80 fm/c.

Signatures of isospin effects were investigated for neutron-rich ({sup 124}Sn+{sup 64}Ni) and neutron-poor ({sup 112}Sn+{sup 58}Ni) systems at 35 MeV/nucleon for noncentral collisions. The centrality dependence of these signatures was tested for several impact parameter estimators. Our main observations are (i) the yields of {sup 1}H and {sup 3}He particles in the neutron-poor system are strongly enhanced with respect to the neutron-rich system, and the yields of {sup 3}H, {sup 6}He, and {sup 7,8}Li are suppressed at all impact parameters, (ii) the yields of {sup 2}H, {sup 4}He, and {sup 6}Li particles are almost the same for both systems, (iii) the N/Z ratio of intermediate mass fragments is correlated with the neutron richness of the system and is weakly dependent on the centrality of the collision, and (iv) the neutron richness of the detected fragments increases strongly with decreasing rapidity in the range from that of the projectile-like fragment to the c.m. region. The gross features of experimental data are reproduced by quantum molecular dynamics model calculations. A comparison between model calculations and the data indicates that the fragments produced in the c.m. regions are weakly excited.

Performance of a simple method of particle identification via pulse rise time discrimination is demonstrated for slow pulses from charge-sensitive preamplifiers with rise times ranging from 10 ns to 500 ns. The method is based on a comparison of the amplitudes of two pulses, derived from each raw preamplifier pulse with two amplifiers with largely differing shaping times, using a fast peak-sensing ADC. For the injected charges corresponding to energy deposits in silicon detectors of a few tens of MeV, a rise time resolution of the order of 1 ns can be achieved. The identification method is applicable in particle experiments involving large-area silicon detectors, but is easily adaptable to other detectors with a response corresponding to significantly different pulse rise times for different particle species., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures
