Abstract

Research on the safety of staple agricultural food products has always been one of humanity's priorities and provides input for dose assessment models. Within this important priority, activity concentrations, transfer factors, and radiological effects of 238U, 232Th, 210Pb, and 40K were studied for selected crops in a village close to the NORM area, located in Central Anatolia region of Turkey. The RESRAD-onsite code has been used to assess the total dose rate. The simulation of the risk analysis covered 80 years. The maximum total dose of 0.5 mSv y−1 was obtained at t = 30 years. Abstract

Purpura fulminans (PF) is a rare and fatal complication of septic shock or diffuse intravascular coagulation (DIC) resulting in skin and soft tissue necrosis. PF can be caused by congenital or acquired protein C (PC) or protein S (PS) deficiency. The most common cause of PF in a neonate is sepsis. In our extremely low birth weight preterm case, due to PF that started in the right-hand fingers, examination was made and protein S deficiency was detected as well as MTHFR (A1298C) and Factor V Leiden (R506Q) homozygous mutations. While being unresponsive to fresh frozen plasma (FFP) and unfractionated heparin (UFH) therapy, we want to highlight the curative treatment with hyperbaric oxygen (HBOT), which has not previously been used in extremely low birth weight preterm infants for this purpose. Abstract

Several countries worldwide recently have experienced considerable transition in demography and disease epidemiology, characterized by falling rates of preventable communicable diseases and increased life expectancy. However, various factors, including the economy, education, food security, and access to proper healthcare and immunization programs, have led to unhealthy behaviors, inappropriate diets, and lack of physical activity, which have favored the development of noncommunicable diseases (NCD). The purpose of this commentary is to further raise the attention of healthcare professionals worldwide, and pediatricians in particular, about the importance of healthy lifestyle promotion, counseling, and follow-up in the prevention of NCDs during developmental years. Primary prevention offers the potential to reduce the continuous expansion of the social and economic burden related to NCDs, particularly within communities characterized by the presence of social and economic disparities.
