Abstract

A path factor in a graph $G$ is a factor of $G$ in which every component is a path on at least two vertices. Let $T\Box P_n$ be the Cartesian product of a tree $T$ and a path on $n$ vertices. Kao and Weng proved that $T\Box P_n$ is hamiltonian if $T$ has a path factor, $n$ is an even integer and $n\geq 4\Delta (T)-2$. They conjectured that for every $\Delta \geq 3$ there exists a graph $G$ of maximum degree $\Delta$ which has a path factor, such that for every even $n< 4\Delta-2$ the product $G\Box P_n$ is not hamiltonian. In this article we prove this conjecture.

We observe a network scenario where parts of a secret are distributed among its nodes. Within the network, a group of attackers is actively trying to obtain the complete secret, while there is also the issue of some nodes malfunctioning or being absent. In this paper, we address this problem by employing graph multicoloring techniques, focusing on the case of a single attacker and varying numbers of malfunctioning nodes.

Abstract

Nanomechanical sensors based on detecting and tracking resonance frequency shifts are to be used in many applications. Various open- and closed-loop tracking schemes, all offering a trade-off between speed and precision, have been studied both theoretically and experimentally. In this work, we advocate the use of a frequency counter as a frequency shift monitor in conjunction with a self-sustaining oscillator (SSO) nanoelectromechanical system (NEMS) configuration. We derive a theoretical model for characterizing the speed and precision of frequency measurements with state-of-the-art frequency counters. Based on the understanding provided by this model, we introduce novel enhancements to frequency counters that result in a trade-off characteristics which is on a par with the other tracking schemes. We describe a low-cost field-programmable-gate array (FPGA) based implementation for the proposed frequency counter and use it with the SSO-NEMS device in order to study its frequency tracking performance. We compare the proposed approach with the phase-locked-loop based scheme both in theory and experimentally. Our results show that similar or better performance can be achieved at a substantially lower cost and improved ease-of-use. We obtain almost perfect correspondence between the theoretical model predictions and the experimental measurements.

Abstract

Abstract Background The aim of our study was to investigate serum chitotriosidase level in tuberculosis patients, its relationship with microbiological and clinical parameters, and response to treatment. Materials and methods This longitudinal panel study included 149 patients with confirmed TB disease. Serum chitotriosidase activity was measured at the beginning and the end of treatment. Factors associated with chitotriosidase activity were explored using univariate and multivariable logistic regression analysis. Results Out of 149 study participants, 71(47.7%) were female. The mean age was 53.0 (SD = 18.2). Majority of cases were new 118(79.2), predominantly 145 (97.3%) having pulmonary tuberculosis. More than half of the patients were sputum smear positive 91 (61.1%) while culture positive in 146 (98%) of them. According to radiological findings, cavitary lesions were found in 92 (63.4%) patients. Anti TB treatment was associated with significant decrease in serum chitotriosidase level (

Abstract

Abstract Vaccines generally require T lymphocytes for B-cell activation and immunoglobulin class switching in response to peptide or protein antigens. In the absence of T cells, limited IgG class switch takes place, germinal centers are short-lived, and the B cells lack memory. Here, immunization of mice with liposomes containing 15mer peptides and monophosphoryl lipid A (MPLA) as adjuvant, induced T-cell independent (TI) IgG class switch within three days, as well as germinal center formation. The antibody responses were long-lived, strictly dependent on Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) signaling, partly dependent on Bruton’s tyrosine kinase (BTK) signal transmission, and independent of signaling through T-cell receptors, MHC class II and inflammasome. The antibody response showed characteristics of both TI type 1 and TI type 2. All IgG subclasses could be boosted months after primary immunization, and the biological function of the secreted antibodies was demonstrated in murine models of allergic anaphylaxis and of bacterial infection. Moreover, antibody responses after immunization with peptide- and MPLA-loaded liposomes could be triggered in neonatal mice and in mice receiving immune-suppressants. This study demonstrates T-cell independent endogenous B-cell memory and recall responses in vivo using a peptide antigen. The stimulation of these antibody responses required a correct and dense assembly and administration of peptide and adjuvant on the surface of liposomes. In the future, TI vaccines may prove beneficial in pathological conditions in which T-cell immunity is compromised through disease or medicines or when rapid, antibody-mediated immune protection is needed.

13. Serious treatment-emergent adverse events in chronic low back pain patients treated with buprenorphine or oral opioids: a retrospective commercial claims analysis

Abstract

Aim: Explore the safety of Belbuca (buprenorphine buccal film), buprenorphine transdermal patches and oral opioids for chronic low back pain (cLBP) treatment. Methods: The retrospective analysis of the MarketScan Commercial database (2018–2021) included treatment-naive cLBP adults. The first date of buprenorphine (Belbuca and transdermal patch) or opioid prescription was index date. Cohorts were defined based on the index medication. Observation included a 6-month pre-index period, while postindex lasted until the end of continuous insurance coverage. There were 44 relevant treatment-emergent adverse events (TEAEs) identified in the literature. Incidence rate ratio (IRR) and incidence rate difference (IRD) were used to compare serious TEAE rates (in 1000 person-years) between cohorts. Propensity-score matching minimized the selection bias. Results: Buprenorphine had lower rates of 15 serious TEAEs than oral opioids (all p ≤ 0.037), while higher rates only for serious dizziness (IRR 2.44, p = 0.011; driven by Belbuca), opioid abuse/dependence (IRR 3.13, p = 0.004; driven by patches) and cholecystitis (IRD 20.25, p = 0.044; an outlier). Additionally, a comparison between Belbuca and oral opioids showed lower rates of 13 serious TEAEs (all p ≤ 0.024) and a higher serious dizziness rate (IRR 3.17, p = 0.024). Although the rates of serious opioid abuse/dependence were similar (24.60 vs 26.93, p = 0.921), all Belbuca patients and none of the opioid patients had a positive history of these events. Belbuca also had lower rates of five serious TEAEs than transdermal patches (all p ≤ 0.018), including a serious opioid abuse/dependence (IRR 0.04, p < 0.001), but higher rates of serious cholecystitis (IRD 52.17, p = 0.035; an outlier) and suicidal ideation (IRD 156.50, p < 0.001; an outlier). Conclusion: Buprenorphine had a better safety profile than oral opioids in cLBP treatment. Belbuca showed a more favorable TEAE profile than buprenorphine transdermal patches and oral opioids.

Abstract

Abstract Posterolateral spinal fusion (PLF) is a procedure used for the treatment of degenerative spine disease. In this study we evaluated Osteogrow-C, a novel osteoinductive device comprised of recombinant human Bone morphogenetic protein 6 (rhBMP6) dispersed in autologous blood coagulum with synthetic ceramic particles, in the sheep PLF model. Osteogrow-C implants containing 74–420 or 1000–1700 µm ceramic particles (TCP/HA 80/20) were implanted between L4–L5 transverse processes in sheep (Ovis Aries, Merinolaandschaf breed). In the first experiment (n = 9 sheep; rhBMP6 dose 800 µg) the follow-up period was 27 weeks while in the second experiment (n = 12 sheep; rhBMP6 dose 500 µg) spinal fusion was assessed by in vivo CT after 9 weeks and at the end of the experiment after 14 (n = 6 sheep) and 40 (n = 6 sheep) weeks. Methods of evaluation included microCT, histological analyses and biomechanical testing. Osteogrow-C implants containing both 74–420 and 1000–1700 µm ceramic particles induced radiographic solid fusion 9 weeks following implantation. Ex-vivo microCT and histological analyses revealed complete osseointegration of newly formed bone with adjacent transverse processes. Biomechanical testing confirmed that fusion between transverse processes was complete and successful. Osteogrow-C implants induced spinal fusion in sheep PLF model and therefore represent a novel therapeutic solution for patients with degenerative disc disease.

Abstract

Mixed labyrinth fractals are dendrites in the unit square introduced by Cristea and Steinsky. They were studied recently by Cristea and Leobacher with respect to the lengths of arcs in the fractals. In this article we first give a construction method for mixed labyrinth fractals with the property that all arcs in the fractal have box counting dimension 2. Subsequently, we show how a certain family of patterns can provide a mixed labyrinth fractal of any box counting dimension between 1 and 2, which also coincides with the box-counting dimension of the arc between any two distinct points of the fractal. Abstract

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), formerly known as nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), encompasses a range of liver conditions from steatosis to nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). Its prevalence, especially among patients with metabolic syndrome, highlights its growing global impact. The pathogenesis of MASLD involves metabolic dysregulation, inflammation, oxidative stress, genetic factors and, notably, mitochondrial dysfunction. Recent studies underscore the critical role of mitochondrial dysfunction in MASLD’s progression. Therapeutically, enhancing mitochondrial function has gained interest, along with lifestyle changes and pharmacological interventions targeting mitochondrial processes. The FDA’s approval of resmetirom for metabolic-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) with fibrosis marks a significant step. While resmetirom represents progress, further research is essential to understand MASLD-related mitochondrial dysfunction fully. Innovative strategies like gene editing and small-molecule modulators, alongside lifestyle interventions, can potentially improve MASLD treatment. Drug repurposing and new targets will advance MASLD therapy, addressing its increasing global burden. Therefore, this review aims to provide a better understanding of the role of mitochondrial dysfunction in MASLD and identify more effective preventive and treatment strategies.

Abstract

Despite growing evidence over the last few years of the efficacy and safety of direct thrombus aspiration using a large bore distal access catheter as a type of mechanical thrombectomy procedure in acute stroke large-vessel occlusion patients, the experience and evidence of this technique for managing thromboembolic complications in endovascular aneurysm treatment is still limited and little research is available regarding this topic. We present a case of a thromboembolic occlusion of the left middle cerebral artery during the preprocedural angiograms of a large and fusiform left internal carotid artery aneurysm. This complication was successfully managed by navigating an already-placed distal access catheter intended for support during the opening of the flow-diverting stent; therefore, the thrombus was manually aspirated for two minutes, and Thrombolysis in Cerebral Infarction (TICI) scale 3 flow was restored. This case should encourage the use of a distal access catheter, already placed for aneurysm treatment, to perform zero-delay direct thrombus aspiration as a rescue approach for thromboembolic complications during endovascular treatments.

Abstract

Macrophage inhibitory factor (MIF) is a multipotent cytokine, involved in the inflammatory response to infections or injuries. This study investigates the role of MIF in liver fibrosis and the modulating effect of betaine on MIF in thioacetamide (TAA)-induced liver fibrosis. The wild-type and knockout MIF−/− C57BL/6 mice were divided into the following groups: control; Bet group, which received betaine; MIF−/−; MIF−/−+Bet; TAA group, which received TAA; TAA+Bet; MIF−/−+TAA; and MIF−/−+TAA+Bet group. After eight weeks of treatment, liver tissue was collected for further analysis. The results revealed that TAA-treated MIF-deficient mice had elevated levels of hepatic TGF-β1 and PDGF-BB, as well as MMP-2, MMP-9, and TIMP-1 compared to TAA-treated wild-type mice. However, the administration of betaine to TAA-treated MIF-deficient mice reduced hepatic TGF-β1 and PDGF-BB levels and also the relative activities of MMP-2, MMP-9 and TIMP-1, albeit less effectively than in TAA-treated mice without MIF deficiency. Furthermore, the antifibrogenic effect of MIF was demonstrated by an increase in MMP2/TIMP1 and MMP9/TIMP1 ratios. The changes in the hepatic levels of fibrogenic factors were confirmed by a histological examination of liver tissue. Overall, the dual nature of MIF highlights its involvement in the progression of liver fibrosis. Its prooxidant and proinflammatory effects may exacerbate tissue damage and inflammation initially, but its antifibrogenic activity suggests a potential protective role against fibrosis development. The study showed that betaine modulates the antifibrogenic effects of MIF in TAA-induced liver fibrosis, by decreasing TGF-β1, PDGF-BB, MMP-2, MMP-9, TIMP-1, and the deposition of ECM (Coll1 and Coll3) in the liver.

Abstract

Severe acute respiratory infections (SARI) are estimated to be the cause of death in about 19% of all children younger than 5 years globally. The outbreak of coronaviral disease (COVID-19) caused by SARS-CoV-2, increased considerably the burden of SARI worldwide. We used data from a vaccine effectiveness study to identify the factors associated with SARS CoV-2 infection among hospitalized SARI patients. We recruited SARI patients at 3 hospitals in Serbia from 7 April 2022-1 May 2023. We collected demographic and clinical data from patients using a structured questionnaire, and all SARI patients were tested for SARS-CoV-2 by RT-PCR. We conducted an unmatched test negative case-control study. SARS-CoV-2 infected SARI patients were considered cases, while SARS CoV-2 negative SARI patients were controls. We conducted bivariate and multivariable logistic regression analysis in order to identify variables associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection. We included 110 SARI patients: 74 were cases and 36 controls. We identified 5 factors associated with SARS-CoV-2 positivity, age (OR = 1.04; 95% CI = 1.01-1.07), having received primary COVID-19 vaccine series (OR = 0.28; 95% CI = 0.09-0.88), current smoking (OR = 8.64; 95% CI = 2.43-30.72), previous SARS CoV-2 infection (OR = 3.48; 95% CI = 1.50-8.11) and number of days before seeking medical help (OR = 0.81; 95% CI = 0.64-1.02). In Serbia during a period of Omicron circulation, we found that older age, unvaccinated, hospitalized SARI patients, previously infected with SARS CoV-2 virus and those who smoked, were more likely to be SARS-CoV-2-positive; these patient populations should be prioritized for COVID vaccination.

IntroductionPeptide receptor radionuclide therapy (PRRT) is a treatment option for well-differentiated, somatostatin receptor positive, unresectable or/and metastatic neuroendocrine tumors (NETs). Although high disease control rates seen with PRRT a significant number NET patients have a short progression-free interval, and currently, there is a deficiency of effective biomarkers to pre-identify these patients. This study is aimed at determining the prognostic significance of biomarkers on survival of patients with NETs in initial PRRT treatment.MethodologyWe retrospectively analyzed 51 patients with NETs treated with PRRT at the Department for nuclear medicine, University Clinical Center Kragujevac, Serbia, with a five-year follow-up. Eligible patients with confirmed inoperable NETs, were retrospectively evaluated hematological, blood-based inflammatory markers, biochemical markers and clinical characteristics on disease progression. In accordance with the progression og the disease, the patients were divided into two groups: progression group (n=18) and a non-progression group (n=33). Clinical data were compared between the two groups.ResultsA total of 51 patients (Md=60, age 25-75 years) were treated with PRRT, of whom 29 (56.86%) demonstrated stable disease, 4 (7.84%) demonstrated a partial response, and 14 (27.46%) demonstrated progressive disease and death was recorded in 4 (7.84%) patients. Abstract

Osteoinductive BMPs require a suitable delivery system for treating various pathological conditions of the spine and segmental bone defects. INFUSE, the only commercially available BMP-based osteoinductive device, consisting of rhBMP2 on bovine absorbable collagen sponge (ACS) showed major disadvantages due to serious side effects. A novel osteoinductive device, OSTEOGROW, comprised of rhBMP6 dispersed within autologous blood coagulum (ABC) is a promising therapy for bone regeneration, subjected to several clinical trials for diaphysial bone repair and spinal fusion. In the present study, we have examined the release dynamics showing that the ABC carrier provided a slower, more steady BMP release in comparison to the ACS. Rat subcutaneous assay was employed to evaluate cellular events and the time course of ectopic osteogenesis. The host cellular response to osteoinductive implants was evaluated by flow cytometry, while dynamics of bone formation and maintenance in time were evaluated by histology, immunohistochemistry and micro CT analyses. Flow cytometry revealed that the recruitment of lymphoid cell populations was significantly higher in rhBMP6/ABC implants, while rhBMP2/ACS implants recruited more myeloid populations. Furthermore, rhBMP6/ABC implants more efficiently attracted early and committed progenitor cells. Dynamics of bone formation induced by rhBMP2/ACS was characterized by a delayed endochondral ossification process in comparison to rhBMP6/ABC implants. Besides, rhBMP6/ABC implants induced more ectopic bone volume in all observed time points in comparison to rhBMP2/ACS implants. These results indicate that OSTEOGROW was superior to INFUSE due to ABC's advantages as a carrier and rhBMP6 superior efficacy in inducing bone.

Abstract

Structural heart disease (SHD) is a new field within cardiovascular medicine. Traditional imaging modalities fall short in supporting the needs of SHD interventions, as they have been constructed around the concept of disease diagnosis. SHD interventions disrupt traditional concepts of imaging in requiring imaging to plan, simulate, and predict intraprocedural outcomes. In transcatheter SHD interventions, the absence of a gold-standard open cavity surgical field deprives physicians of the opportunity for tactile feedback and visual confirmation of cardiac anatomy. Hence, dependency on imaging in periprocedural guidance has led to evolution of a new generation of procedural skillsets, concept of a visual field, and technologies in the periprocedural planning period to accelerate preclinical device development, physician, and patient education. Adaptation of 3-dimensional (3D) printing in clinical care and procedural planning has demonstrated a reduction in early-operator learning curve for transcatheter interventions. Integration of computation modeling to 3D printing has accelerated research and development understanding of fluid mechanics within device testing. Application of 3D printing, computational modeling, and ultimately incorporation of artificial intelligence is changing the landscape of physician training and delivery of patient-centric care. Transcatheter structural heart interventions are requiring in-depth periprocedural understanding of cardiac pathophysiology and device interactions not afforded by traditional imaging metrics.

Abstract

Background and Objectives: Prehypertension and hypertension are the most common cardiovascular disorders worldwide and are increasingly considered one of the most serious public health problems, particularly in developing countries. The objective of this study was to determine the frequency and demographic and socioeconomic predictors of prehypertension and hypertension in the adults in Serbia, and to examine the relationship between prehypertension and hypertension and health behavior determinants (smoking, alcohol use, physical activity) and individual aspects of health (a health self-assessment, multimorbidity, BMI, depressive symptoms). Materials and Methods: The research is part of the fourth National Population Health Survey conducted in 2019, which was conducted by the Republic Institute of Statistics, in cooperation with the Institute of Public Health of Serbia and the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Serbia. As a research instrument, questionnaires were used in accordance with the methodology of the European Health Survey. For the purposes of this research, data on the adult population aged 20 and over were used. Results: Women are at a reduced risk for both prehypertension (OR = 0.328) and hypertension (OR = 0.349) by nearly 70%. Similarly, those aged below 60 years have a lower risk for prehypertension and those younger than 40 years have a lower risk for hypertension (OR = 0.995), whereas people with a lower education have a 4.3 times higher risk of prehypertension (OR = 4.323) and a 1.6 times higher risk of hypertension (OR = 1.614). The poor have a 1.4 times higher risk of prehypertension (OR = 1.413) and a 1 times higher risk of hypertension (OR = 1.035). People with multimorbidity have a 1.2 times higher risk of both prehypertension (OR = 1.218) and a 4.8 times higher risk of hypertension (OR = 4.867). Conclusions: Male gender, lower education, poverty, age and the presence of multimorbidity are significant predictors of prehypertension and hypertension in the Serbian adult population, so preventive strategies should be aimed at these sensitive population groups.

BackgroundSelection of effective and safe therapy for management of patients with coronavirus disease is challenging. Tocilizumab (TZB) has emerged as a potential treatment option for COVID-19. Several aspects regarding Tocilizumab treatment remain uncertain, such as the optimal timing for its administration and the safety profile, including the potential risk of infections. The aim of the study is to present the clinical characteristics of patients with COVID-19 following the application of Tocilizumab.MethodsThis is a retrospective analysis of 121 patients with severe forms of COVID-19 previously treated with Tocilizumab was conducted. All patients were admitted to intensive care units (ICUs).ResultsOf 121 patients, the majority were men 72 (59.5%) with a median age at presentation of 65 ± 13 years. Only 9 (7.43%) patients were without comorbidities, while the other 112 (92.55%) had two or more comorbidities. Almost all of the 120 patients (99.2%) needed oxygen therapy, such as nasal cannulas in 110 (90.9%) patients, high flow nasal catheter (HFNC) in 4 (3.3%) patients, and continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) in 5 (4.1%) patients while 1 patient was intubated at the time of hospital admission. Abstract

Despite technological progress and the tendency for automation, the majority of manufacturing workplaces still rely on human labor. Although industrial tasks are frequently composed of simple operator actions, non-ergonomic execution of such repetitive tasks has been reported as the primary cause of musculoskeletal disorders. Considering the sizes of manufacturing halls and large numbers of employees, there is an increasing need for tools that can improve the recognition of unsafe acts. Herein, a deep learning-based procedure for pose safety assessment is proposed and validated using monocular videos captured with a conventional IP camera. The two key composing components of the proposed pipeline are the three-dimensional (3D) pose estimator and mesh classifier. The proposed method was validated experimentally by considering three different methodologically selected industrial tasks: a laborious task that requires all-body effort (pushing and pulling), a task that requires an upper-limb action comprising intensive interaction and motion control (drilling), and a typical collaborative task (polishing with a collaborative robot with variable mechanical impedance). Accuracies of 84.67%, 92%, and 98%, respectively, were achieved. Besides higher accuracy, the proposed method has shown practical advantages over existing alternatives based on analyzing the parameters derived from the human poses. Particularly, we report that the proposed procedure is generic, and it works directly with 3D human body poses, which significantly increases applicability while reducing the complexity and effort needed for data annotation and output interpretation by non-experts.

Abstract

Abstract The compliance of industrial personal protective equipment (PPE) still represents a challenging problem considering size of industrial halls and number of employees that operate within them. Since there is a high variability of PPE types/designs that could be used for protecting various body parts and physiological functions, this study was focused on assessing the use of computer vision algorithms to automate the compliance of head-mounted PPE. As a solution, we propose a pipeline that couples the head ROI estimation with the PPE detection. Compared to alternative approaches, it excludes false positive cases while it largely speeds up data collection and labeling. A comprehensive dataset was created by merging public datasets PictorPPE and Roboflow with author’s collected images, containing twelve different types of PPE was used for the development and assessment of three deep learning architectures (Faster R-CNN, MobileNetV2-SSD and YOLOv5)—which in literature were studied only separately. The obtained results indicated that various deep learning architectures reached different performances for the compliance of various PPE types—while the YOLOv5 slightly outperformed considered alternatives (precision 0.920 ± 0.147, and recall 0.611 ± 0.287). It is concluded that further studies on the topic should invest more effort into assessing various deep learning architectures in order to objectively find the optimal ones for the compliance of a particular PPE type. Considering the present technological and data privacy barriers, the proposed solution may be applicable for the PPE compliance at certain checkpoints where employees can confirm their identity.

Ts65Dn mice are widely used and serve as the best-characterized animal model of DS.MethodsWe undertook studies to characterize age-related changes for AD-relevant markers linked to Aβ, Tau, and phospho-Tau, axonal structure, inflammation, and behavior.ResultsWe found age related changes in both Ts65Dn and 2N mice. Relative to 2N mice, Ts65Dn mice showed consistent increases in Aβ40, insoluble phospho-Tau, and neurofilament light protein. These changes were correlated with deficits in learning and memory.DiscussionThese data have implications for planning future experiments aimed at preventing disease-related phenotypes and biomarkers. Interventions should be planned to address specific manifestations using treatments and treatment durations adequate to engage targets to prevent the emergence of phenotypes.

Abstract

BackgroundInvasive fungal diseases (IFDs) are caused by fungal infections that manifest as serious secondary infections in patients with COVID-19. The increased morbidity and mortality rates are most frequently observed in patients with COVID-19-associated pulmonary aspergillosis (CAPA) and COVID-19-associated candidiasis (CAC). CAPA is the most frequently encountered infection with an incidence rate of 0.7–7.7%, while CAC is a less common and less studied fungal infection in COVID-19 patients.Materials and methodsThe present article is a prospective observational single-center study that was conducted between 1 September 2021 and 24 December 2021, involving 6,335 patients who were admitted to COVID Hospital “Batajnica,” University Clinical Center of Serbia, Belgrade.ResultsOf the 6,335 patients hospitalized during the four-month period of the study, 120 patients (1.86%) who had a proven diagnosis of IFD were included in the study. These patients were divided into two groups: CAPA patients (n = 63) and CAC patients (n = 56); however, one of the 120 patients was diagnosed with Cryptoccocus neoformans infection. The mean age of the study population was 65.7 ± 13.9 years, and 78 (65.5%) of them were men. The patients were identified to have the following non-malignant comorbidities: arterial hypertension in 62 (52.1%) patients, diabetes mellitus in 34 (28.65), pre-existing lung damage similar to that observed in COPD and asthma in 20 (16.8%), and chronic renal insufficiency in 13 (10.9%) patients. Abstract

The coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus type 2 (SARS-CoV-2), includes a clinical spectrum of diseases from mild to severe progressive pneumonia, which has affected and still affects the human population worldwide. Most commonly, it is presented by respiratory symptoms, but studies have shown that about 50% of patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection have at least one gastrointestinal symptom (GI), predominantly nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, or loss of appetite. In addition, abnormal liver functional tests are commonly present in the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The aim of our study was to examine the GI and hepatic manifestations of COVID-19 in patients hospitalized due to COVID-19 pneumonia in “COVID hospital Batajnica”, University Clinical Center of Serbia in Belgrade. The study included 498 consecutive patients, and the data was obtained from the patient’s electronic medical history. GI symptoms included nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and anorexia. Collected laboratory values included baseline and peak values of blood count, inflammatory parameters, liver function tests, renal function tests, and cardiac enzyme tests. The results have shown that GI symptoms occurred in 26% of cases at diagnosis, which indicates the great susceptibility of the GI system to SARS-CoV-2. There was a high risk of liver injury in patients with COVID-19 pneumonia (>60%). The level of AST is more often increased compared to ALT, which is different from other virus-induced liver lesions and may be a useful indicator of SARS-CoV-2 infection. Further research should focus on the causes of liver damage in SARS-CoV-2 virus and the impact on treatment and outcome of COVID-19 disease.

Abstract

The applications of graph coloring are diverse and many so lots of new types of coloring are being proposed and explored. Here we define a safe k-coloring, motivated by the application of coloring to secret sharing. Secret sharing is a way of securing a secret from a number of attackers by dividing it into parts and then distributing those parts to some persons, represented here by graph vertices. Parts of the secret are represented by colors which are then assigned to the vertices under certain conditions, making a coloring safe if a predetermined number of attackers cannot read the whole secret, nor disable the rest of the group from doing so. We observe a fixed number of colors, namely 3, and analyze what kind of graphs have a safe 3-coloring.
