The corrosion behavior of NiTi alloy and stainless steels (AISI 316L and X2CrNiMoN22-5-3) in 0.9% sodium chloride (0.154 moll-1) solution was investigated using open circuit potential measurements, potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements. Microstructural analyses before and after electrochemical tests were performed with the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) equipped with energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS). The lowest corrosion current density has NiTi alloy and the extent of the passive range increased in the order AISI 316L stainless steel < NiTi alloy < X2CrNiMoN22-5-3 duplex stainless steel. The oxide film formed on all samples has a double-layer structure consisting of a barrier-type inner layer and a porous outer layer. Oxide films formed on the surface of steels mainly contains iron oxides and chromium oxide, while the surface film of the NiTi alloy mainly contains TiO2 oxide.

This study investigates the changes at the electrodes and in the solution during crystal violet dye removal by electrocoagulation at different current densities (0.016, 0.024, and 0.032 A cm-2) and initial pH values (3.2, 5.5, and 7.0). The electrocoagulation process, which lasted 50 min, revealed changes in pH, temperature, electrical conductivity, and concentration of the crystal violet dye in the solution. The results demonstrate complete removal of crystal violet dye at the highest current density (achieved after 40 min) and an initial pH of 5.5 (complete removal after 30 min). During the electrocoagulation process, both the anodic and cathodic electrode materials were consumed. The consumption of electrode material increased with higher current density and solution pH, the influence of current density being more pronounced. Examination of the electrode surfaces under a light microscope revealed that the anodes dissolved uniformly and locally during the electrocoagulation process, while the cathodes mostly underwent uniform corrosion. In this paper, different metallic materials (alloys of Fe, Al, and Zn) were investigated as sacrificial anodes during electrocoagulation (EC) for the treatment of compost leachate. Taguchi’s L9 orthogonal array design was applied to investigate the four controllable factors (different metallic material, initial pH value, stirring speed, and contact time) on decrease of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and electrodes mass loss. COD decrease reached values in the range of 75.72–92.97 %. The Taguchi optimisation results showed that the most effective factor for decrease of COD is the duration of the experiment, while the electrode material was for electrodes mass loss. The zinc electrode showed the lowest potential for use in the EC process for treatment of compost leachate, while the Al and Fe electrodes could be used in an acid or slightly acidic environment. The following decreasing order of energy consumption was recorded: Zn > Al > Fe. The measured values of metal electrode mass loss exceeded the theoretical values calculated using Faraday’s law in EC experiments with Al electrodes, while in experiments with Fe and Zn electrodes, those differences were insignificant [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The effect of a commercial inhibitor (Chemtec FI30) on the corrosion of P235 carbon steel in water (demineralised and/or tap water) with the addition of a commercial biocide (Chemtec BI01) was studied in the present work. This study was carried out by weight loss and electrochemical methods, while specimen’s surface was examined using optical microscope. Results obtained from gravimetric measurement revealed that P235 carbon steel corroded in aqueous solution, i.e., in a solution of demineralised and tap water (50 : 50) and a biocide (Fig. 1), and in tap water with a biocide (Fig. 5). By analysing the surface of carbon steel with an optical microscope, general and pitting corrosion was observed, which was more pronounced in tap water with biocide (Figs. 2 and 6). The addition of a commercial inhibitor significantly reduced the occurrence of corrosion damage on the surface of carbon steel (Figs. 3, 4, 7, and 8) and decreased the rate of carbon steel corrosion in all aqueous solutions (Table 1). Electrochemical investigations performed by open circuit potential measurement, linear polarisation and potentiodynamic polarisation measurement showed that the inhibitor Chemtec FI03 shifted the potential to more positive values (Figs. 9 and 10), increased polarisation resistance (Table 3), decreased the rate of carbon steel corrosion, and had high efficiency in all tested solutions (Table 4). A comparative corrosion study of Cu and Cu-Al, Cu-Al-Ni, Cu-Al-Mn and Cu-Al-Mn-Ni in 0.5 mol dm-3 NaCl solution was performed using an open circuit potential, potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements (EIS). Scanning electron microscopy/energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDS) analysis was used to evaluate corrosive damage on the sample surface after polarization measurements. The reported results suggest that the alloying elements have reduced cathodic and anodic current densities in the Tafel region, increased anodic currents at higher anodic potentials, and slightly displaced corrosion potential towards more positive values. Overall, impedance increased in the following order: Cu < Cu-Al < Cu-Al-Ni < Cu-Al-Mn < Cu-Al-Mn-Ni. This indicates that Cu alloys possess better corrosion resistance. SEM and EDS analysis after polarization measurements showed uniform dissolution of pure Cu, as well as the presence of a surface oxide layer, consisting of a mixture of the corresponding alloying elements, on all investigated alloys. Aggressive anodic polarization severely damaged the barrier layers on the Cu alloy specimens.

Titanium (Ti) is widely used in medical and dental implants. Calcium phosphate (CPs) coatings enhance Ti implants' osteoinductive properties, and additives further improve these coatings. Recently, a nano amorphous calcium phosphate (nACP) coating decorated with chitosan oligolactate (ChOL) and selenium (Se) showed immunomodulatory effects. This study investigates the surface morphology, composition, bioactivity, mechanical properties, and Se-release mechanism of the nACP@ChOL-Se hybrid coating on Ti substrates. Amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) was synthesized, and the nACP@ChOL-Se hybrid coating was deposited on Ti substrates using in situ anaphoretic deposition. Physico-chemical characterization was used to analyze the surface of the coating (scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy). The distribution of Se within the coating was examined with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Bioactivity was evaluated in simulated body fluid (SBF), and adhesion was tested using a scratch test method. In vitro testing determined the release mechanism of Se. SEM images illustrated the surface morphology, while AFM provided a detailed analysis of surface roughness. XRD analysis revealed structural and phase composition, and EDS confirmed Se distribution within the coating. The coating exhibited bioactivity in SBF and showed good adhesion according to the scratch test. In vitro testing uncovered the release mechanism of Se from the coating. This study successfully characterized the surface morphology, composition, bioactivity, and Se-release mechanism of the nACP@ChOL-Se hybrid coating on Ti substrates, offering insights for developing immunomodulatory coatings for medical and dental applications., (© 2024. This paper discusses the effect of different heat treatment procedures on the microstructural characteristics, damping capacities, and mechanical properties of CuAlNi shape memory alloys (SMA). The investigation was performed on samples in the as-cast state and heat treated states (solution annealing at 885 °C/60'/H 2 O and after tempering at 300 °C/60'/H 2 O). The microstructure of the samples was examined by light microscopy (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) equipped with a device for energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS) analysis. Light and scanning electron microscopy showed martensitic microstructure in all investigated samples. However, the changes in microstructure due to heat treatment by the presence of two types of martensite phases (β 1' and γ 1' ) influenced alloy damping and mechanical properties by enhancing alloy damping characteristics. Heat treatment procedure reduced the alloys' mechanical properties and increased hardness of the alloy. Fractographic analysis of the alloy showed a transgranular type of fracture in samples after casting. After solution annealing, two types of fracture mechanisms can be noticed, transgranular and intergranular, while in tempered samples, mostly an intergranular type of fracture exists.

The electrochemical behavior of commercially pure titanium (CP Ti) and Ti-6Al-4V (Grade 5) alloy in phosphate buffered saline solution (PBS, pH = 7.4) at 37 °C (i.e., in simulated physiological solution in the human body) was examined using open circuit potential measurements, linear and potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy methods. After the impedance measurements and after potentiodynamic polarization measurements, the surface of the samples was investigated by scanning electron microscopy, while the elemental composition of oxide film on the surface of each sample was determined by EDS analysis. The electrochemical and corrosion behavior of CP Ti and Ti-6Al-4V alloys is due to forming a two-layer model of surface oxide film, consisting of a thin barrier-type inner layer and a porous outer layer. The inner barrier layer mainly prevents corrosion of CP Ti and Ti-6Al-4V alloy, whose thickness and resistance increase sharply in the first few days of exposure to PBS solution. With longer exposure times to the PBS solution, the structure of the barrier layer subsequently settles, and its resistance increases further. Compared to Ti-6Al-4V alloy, CP Ti shows greater corrosion stability.
