In many cases, mental health problems are recognized too late to effectively inte- rvene and prevent adverse outcomes. Recent advances in the availability and reliability of wearable technologies offer opportunities for continuously monitoring mental states, which may be used to improve a person’s mental health. Previous studies attempting to detect and predict mental states with different modalities have shown only small to moderate effect sizes. This limited success may be due to the large variability between individuals regarding e.g., ways of coping with stress or behavioral patterns associated with positive or negative feelings. A study was set up for the detection of mental states based on longitudinal weara- ble and contextual sensing, targeted at investigating between-subjects variations in terms of predictors of mental states and variations in how predictors relate to mental states. At the end of March 2022, 16 PhD candidates from the Netherlands started to participate in the study. Over nine months, we collected data in terms of their daily mental states (valence and arousal), continuous physiological data (Oura ring) and smartphone data (AWARE fra- mework including GPS and smartphone usage). From the raw data, we aggregated daily values for each participant in terms of sleep, physical activity, mental states, phone usage and GPS movement. First results (six months into the study at the time of writing) indicate that almost all participants show a large variability in ratings of daily mental states, which is a prerequisite for predictive modeling. Direction, strength and standard deviations of Spearman correlations between valence, arousal and the different variables suggest that several predictors of valence and arousal are more subject dependent than others. Het gaat niet goed met de grote vuurvlinder en de groene glazenmaker. Deze vlinder en libel zijn beide typische soorten van het laagveenmilieu. De oorzaken van de achteruitgang zijn verschillend, maar de twee dalende trends geven aanleiding voor zorgen over de huidige staat van hun leefgebieden.

Een grote bedreiging van de bonenteelt is de bonenvlieg. De toepassing van het insecticide chloorpyrifos als zeer effectief zaadbehandelingsmiddel tegen de aantasting door de bonenvlieg is sinds 2020 verboden. Het bestrijden van deze plaag moet nu dus op een andere wijze gebeuren. In het eerste stadium van de teelt, bij de ontkieming van de zaden treedt de grootste schade van de bonenvlieg op, is juist een zaadbehandeling altijd zeer effectief gebleken. Zonder behandeling kan tot wel 70 procent van het zaad reeds bij kieming verloren gaan. Daarom is het van groot belang om naar alternatieven te zoeken zodat de bonenvlieg minimale schade aan de bonenteelt kan toebrengen. voor een duurzame teelt voor de toekomst zullen toepassingen gericht zijn op het gebruik van low risk middelen en groene middelen. Het doel van het project is manieren te vinden om aantasting door de bonenvlieg te beperken. Er zal worden gekeken naar de inzet van groene/low risk middelen, toegepast als zaadbehandeling, grondbehandeling en/of als bladtoepassing in het eerste stadium van de teelt aangezien voornamelijk dan de aantasting plaatsvindt. Het uiteindelijke doel is een toekomstbestendige bonenteelt van eigen bodem. Een teelt waarbij een weerbaar gewas centraal staat, een gewas dat zo min mogelijk wordt gehinderd door plagen en ziekten. Dit zal moeten worden bereikt door het optimaal inzetten van de beschikbare middelen, timing is hierin essentieel.

De aanleiding voor deze studie ligt bij het behalen van de KRW doelen. De waterschappen werken aan het opstellen van KRW gebiedsplannen. De focus is om de waterkwaliteit verder te verbeteren door het fosfaatgehalte nog verder te verminderen (fosfaatlimitering). De rwzi’s zijn één van de puntbronnen die fosfaten in het oppervlakte water brengen. Mogelijk wordt (in de toekomst) gevraagd om verder te zuiveren dan de gebruikelijke 0,5 tot 1 mg/l. Het plaatsen van een zandfilter is nu een vaak genoemde optie, maar mogelijk loop je hiermee tegen het beperkte rendement van het filter aan. Met een zandfilter pak je alleen onopgelost fosfaat en ortho-fosfaat, vaak met een ijzer of aluminium dosering, aan. Het opgelost organisch gebonden fosfaat (DOP) is veel moeilijker te verwijderen. Een brainstorm binnen de werkgroep heeft geleid tot de volgende onderzoeksvraag: Welke betaalbare en duurzame technieken zijn er nationaal en internationaal (in ontwikkeling) die het opgelost organisch gebonden fosfor kunnen aanpakken en daarmee het totaal-P verlagen.

Scientists from Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Switzerland, France, Luxembourg, the US and the UK, collaborated to assess to what extent human-induced climate change altered the likelihood and intensity of the heavy rainfall causing the severe flooding. Using published peer-reviewed methods, they analysed how human-induced climate change affected maximum 1-day and 2-day rainfall events in the summer season (April-September) in two small regions where the recent flooding has been most severe in the Ahr-Erft region (Germany) and on the Meuse (Belgium) and anywhere over a larger region including Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands.

Bijna elk jaar treedt in Nederland in de zomer een periode van droogte op. Er verdampt meer water dan er neerslag valt, en de aanvoer van water door Rijn en Maas neemt af. Dit kan tot problemen leiden, bijvoorbeeld te lage grondwaterstanden en droogval van beken op de hoge gronden, verslechterende waterkwaliteit of hinder voor de scheepvaart. Er worden dan maatregelen getroffen, zoals het instellen van onttrekkingsverboden en zuinig schutten in sluizen. Als de situatie verergert kunnen watertekorten ontstaan, die besluiten nodig maken over prioritering bij het verdelen van schaars water. Rijkswaterstaat en de waterschappen zijn verantwoordelijk voor de uitvoering van het waterbeheer in normale en bijzondere omstandigheden. Provincies zijn dat voor het diepe grondwaterbeheer en in veel gevallen het nautisch beheer op regionale vaarwegen. Voor situaties met watertekorten en droogte is een landelijke crisisorganisatie ingericht. Dit draaiboek beschrijft de informatie-uitwisseling tussen de betrokken crisispartners, en de afspraken over afstemming van maatregelen en van pers- en publiekscommunicatie.

Er wordt gekeken naar de inzet van groene middelen middelen eventueel afgewisseld met beperkte inzet van chemische gewasbeschermingsmiddelen en gebruik makend van ondersteuning door middel van een waarschuwingssysteem. Proeftuin Zwaagdijk heeft drie proeven uitgevoerd verspreid over Nederland. De proeven zijn aangelegd in Zwaagdijk (200660), Havelte (200661) en Dordrecht (200662). Om proeven te krijgen die overeenkomen met een Phytophthora aantasting in de praktijk zijn de proeven niet geinfecteerd.

A recently launched project under the auspices of the World Climate Research Program’s (WCRP) Coordinated Regional Downscaling Experiments Flagship Pilot Studies program (CORDEX-FPS) is presented. This initiative aims to build first-of-its-kind ensemble climate experiments of convection permitting models to investigate present and future convective processes and related extremes over Europe and the Mediterranean. In this manuscript the rationale, scientific aims and approaches are presented along with some preliminary results from the testing phase of the project. Three test cases were selected in order to obtain a first look at the ensemble performance. The test cases covered a summertime extreme precipitation event over Austria, a fall Foehn event over the Swiss Alps and an intensively documented fall event along the Mediterranean coast. The test cases were run in both “weather-like” (WL, initialized just before the event in question) and “climate” (CM, initialized 1 month before the event) modes. Ensembles of 18–21 members, representing six different modeling systems with different physics and modelling chain options, was generated for the test cases (27 modeling teams have committed to perform the longer climate simulations). Results indicate that, when run in WL mode, the ensemble captures all three events quite well with ensemble correlation skill scores of 0.67, 0.82 and 0.91. They suggest that the more the event is driven by large-scale conditions, the closer the agreement between the ensemble members. Even in climate mode the large-scale driven events over the Swiss Alps and the Mediterranean coasts are still captured (ensemble correlation skill scores of 0.90 and 0.62, respectively), but the inter-model spread increases as expected. In the case over Mediterranean the effects of local-scale interactions between flow and orography and land–ocean contrasts are readily apparent. Contains fulltext : 215210.pdf (publisher's version ) (Open Access), INTRODUCTION: This narrative review summarizes current knowledge on the physiology and pathophysiology of expiratory muscle function in ICU patients, as shared by academic professionals from multidisciplinary, multinational backgrounds, who include clinicians, clinical physiologists and basic physiologists. RESULTS: The expiratory muscles, which include the abdominal wall muscles and some of the rib cage muscles, are an important component of the respiratory muscle pump and are recruited in the presence of high respiratory load or low inspiratory muscle capacity. Recruitment of the expiratory muscles may have beneficial effects, including reduction in end-expiratory lung volume, reduction in transpulmonary pressure and increased inspiratory muscle capacity. However, severe weakness of the expiratory muscles may develop in ICU patients and is associated with worse outcomes, including difficult ventilator weaning and impaired airway clearance. Several techniques are available to assess expiratory muscle function in the critically ill patient, including gastric pressure and ultrasound. CONCLUSION: The expiratory muscles are the "neglected component" of the respiratory muscle pump. Expiratory muscles are frequently recruited in critically ill ventilated patients, but a fundamental understanding of expiratory muscle function is still lacking in these patients.

Om verzilting van het Amsterdam-Rijnkanaal (ARK) tegen te gaan, kan via de Prinses Irenesluizen bij Wijk bij Duurstede water worden ingelaten. Dat is goed voor de natuur en de drinkwatervoorziening, maar zo’n maatregel beïnvloedt indirect ook de scheepvaart op het ARK en de Waal, de watervoorraad in het IJsselmeer, het doorspoelen van het Volkerrak-Zoommeer en nog veel meer. Het gaat daarbij niet alleen om de techniek, maar ook om afstemming en communicatie. Er zijn tientallen bestuurders op lokaal, regionaal en nationaal niveau betrokken. En dan hebben we het nog niet eens over de vele groepen gebruikers die aanspraak maken op het beschikbare water. Ziehier een voorbeeld van de vele uitdagingen tijdens langdurige droogte en lage wateraanvoer door Rijn en Maas.

Het project “Maximaal melk uit gras” is een POP3, maatregel 8 project. Deze projecten kenmerken zich door het formeren van een “Operational group (= praktijknetwerk) die gedurende een vrij korte periode met pilots aan de slag gaat met de doelstelling van het project. Een ander te leveren product, naast het oprichten van een praktijknetwerk, is het formuleren van waardevolle vervolgactiviteiten. En tenslotte, dat het netwerk op Europees niveau kennis uitwisselt.

This report was written at the request of Dirk Jan Sloot (Ministerie van Infrastructuur en Waterstaat, Directoraat-Generaal Water en Bodem). It aims at helping non-specialists understand recent the sea level rise science to make better decisions. The central question we try to answer is: why is sea level not rising at the same pace everywhere around the globe? To anwser this question we focus on explaining the basic physical processes at play in sea level rise and which ones dominate total sea level at different length and time scale. This report could also serve as a entry point into the specialised literature that is cited. It forms the basis for a presentation at the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management.

Rioolwaterzuiveringen zijn de belangrijkste bron van geneesmiddelen en kunstmatige zoetstoffen in oppervlaktewater. De mate waarin rwzi’s deze organische microverontreinigingen verwijderen, lijkt te variëren van locatie tot locatie en/of in de tijd. Oriënterend onderzoek bij zeven rwzi’s in Groningen en Drenthe toonde aan dat de verwijdering van de zoetstof acesulfaam varieerde: van volledige verwijdering (>99%) op de rwzi in Assen tot minder dan 40 procent op de rwzi in Gieten. Bovendien bleek dat de verwijdering van acesulfaam volledig is gebaseerd op biologische afbraak. Duits onderzoek heeft aangetoond dat de afbraak van acesulfaam sterk kan variëren in de tijd, maar dat er geen verband bestaat met de nitrificatiesnelheid en temperatuur.

Het doel van het onderzoek is het verkrijgen van een eerste indruk van de kwaliteit van drainagewater van kunstgrasvelden, om op basis daarvan te kunnen besluiten of aanvullend onderzoek gewenst is en hoe het aanvullend onderzoek vorm zou moeten krijgen. De kwaliteit van drainagewater van een aantal kunstgrasvelden is vergeleken met run-off water van wegen. Dit run-off water is als referentie gebruikt omdat logischerwijs mag worden verwacht dat dit water ook vervuild is als gevolg van slijtage van autobanden, d.w.z. de grondstof voor rubbergranulaat.

Contains fulltext : 169686.pdf (publisher's version ) (Open Access), BACKGROUND: Without assistance, smokers being admitted to the hospital for coronary heart disease often return to regular smoking within a year. OBJECTIVE: This study assessed the 12-month effectiveness of a telephone and a face-to-face counselling intervention on smoking abstinence among cardiac patients. Differential effects for subgroups varying in their socioeconomic status and intention to quit smoking were also studied. METHODS: A randomised controlled trial was used. During hospital stay, smokers hospitalised for coronary heart disease were assigned to usual care (n = 245), telephone counselling (n = 223) or face-to-face counselling (n = 157). Eligible patients were allocated to an intervention counselling group and received nicotine patches. After 12 months, self-reported continued abstinence was assessed and biochemically verified in quitters. Effects on smoking abstinence were tested using multilevel logistic regression analyses applying the intention-to-treat approach. RESULTS: Compared with usual care, differential effects of telephone and face-to-face counselling on continued abstinence were found in patients with a low socioeconomic status and in patients with a low quit intention. For these patients, telephone counselling increased the likelihood of abstinence threefold (OR = 3.10, 95 % CI 1.32-7.31, p = 0.01), whereas face-to-face counselling increased this likelihood fivefold (OR = 5.30, 95 % CI 2.13-13.17, p < 0.001). Considering the total sample, the interventions did not result in stronger effects than usual care. CONCLUSION: Post-discharge telephone and face-to-face counselling interventions increased smoking abstinence rates at 12 months compared with usual care among cardiac patients of low socioeconomic status and low quit intentions. The present study indicates that patients of high socioeconomic status and high quit motivation require different cessation approaches.

Kunstmatige zoetstoffen als acesulfaam komen via urine in huishoudelijk afvalwater terecht. Acesulfaam stond tot voor kort te boek als persistente stof. Onderzoek van noordelijke waterschappen en waterbedrijven laat echter zien dat de stof wel degelijk afgebroken wordt in RWZI’s, maar ook dat de mate van verwijdering sterk varieert tussen RWZI’s. De biologische afbraak van de zoetstof is blijkbaar afhankelijk van lokale factoren. De resultaten werpen een nieuw licht op de verwijdering van microverontreinigingen in RWZI’s.

In Nederland worden veel data over flora en fauna verzameld door vrijwillige natuurwaarnemers. Duizenden mensen geven informatie door over allerlei soortgroepen. Deze verspreidingsgegevens zijn erg belangrijk voor het Nederlandse biodiversiteitsbeleid. Er bestaat echter geen duidelijk beeld over wie de waarnemers zijn en wat hen beweegt. Daarom heeft de Radboud Universiteit deze groep in kaart gebracht met een landelijke enquête. In dit artikel geven we antwoord op de volgende vragen: wat is het profiel van de vrijwillige waarnemer, hoe gaan zij te werk, wat zijn hun motivaties, en hoe denken zij over het delen van data?

Contains fulltext : 160641.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access), Health-promoting messages can be framed in terms of the beneficial consequences of healthy behaviour (gain-framed messages) or the detrimental consequences of unhealthy behaviour (loss-framed messages). An influential notion holds that the perceived risk associated with the recommended behaviour determines the relative persuasiveness of gain- and loss-framed messages. This 'risk-framing hypothesis', which was derived from prospect theory, has been central to health message-framing research for the better part of two decades and has enduring appeal to researchers and practitioners. It has found its way into several health communication handbooks and is communicated to the general public. The present article examines the validity of the risk-framing hypothesis anew by providing a review of the health message-framing literature. In spite of its ongoing appeal, we conclude that the hypothesis has severe theoretical flaws. In addition, we find that the empirical evidence in favour of the hypothesis is weak and inconsistent. It seems that, in applying prospect theory's tenets to a health-promotion context, some of the theory's key aspects have been lost in translation. At the close of the article, we offer a research agenda for the future, arguing that, above all, new methodology is needed to bring the message-framing literature further.

This study consists of two parts. In the first part we evaluate the cloud cover representation of the high-resolution mesoscale model HARMONIE using MSG (Meteosat Second Generation) observations. We assess the performance of different model versions. We also examine anomalies in time and space. Cloud cover is a difficult to model parameter and is dependent on several processes, like turbulence and convection. Verification of cloud cover in HARMONIE using satellite data has not been done systematically and is therefore needed. Although MSG cloud cover is approximately 4% higher compared with ground based observations, a significant underestimation of cloud cover in HARMONIE above sea is observed. The degree of underestimation is dependent on weather conditions. The latest version of HARMONIE correlates better with MSG than its predecessors. More advanced verification methods show a systematic underestimation of the cloud area and an increase in performance during the night. In the second part, the impact of cloud cover schemes is studied. Subgrid variability of temperature and humidity are important for cloud formation. Parametrizations are needed to link the subgrid variability of temperature and humidity to cloud cover and are called cloud schemes. Two types of cloud schemes are assessed: a relative humidity cloud scheme and a statistical cloud scheme. The relative humidity cloud scheme directly links relative humidity to cloud cover, while the statistical cloud scheme provides a probability distribution of the temperature and humidity around the mean, which can be converted to a fractional cloud cover. Each sophistication of the statistical cloud scheme contributes to better cloud cover forecasts. During the day, sophistications to the cloud scheme have a larger impact than during the night, which is due to the lack of convective and turbulent conditions during the night.
