7. Vibration assessment of FRP composite pedestrian bridges

Abstract

Fibre reinforced polymers (FRP) are gaining momentum in bridge engineering applications, particularly where lower weight and ease of installation are important factors. Due to their reduced weight, special attention needs to be paid to dynamic behaviour and the human-structure interaction. This research investigates the vibration performance of a recently constructed FRP suspension footbridge. Initially, the bridge was analysed using FE modelling, followed by field testing which provided measurements for the frequencies, mode shapes and damping, as well as for the dynamic response induced by pedestrians. The experimental modal data were subsequently used to calibrate the FE models. The results provided information about the vibration characteristics of such bridges and better understanding regarding specific FE modelling aspects. Subsequently, this research investigated how damage affects the vibration characteristics of FRP bridges and whether it is possible to identify its location. Two GFRP beams were progressively bonded using strap joints to simulate gradual degradation of the joints. Damage assessment was carried out through specialised damage identification techniques (DIT) that utilise modal data. In addition, the calibrated FE bridge models were used to undertake a damage assessment of the structure. Several possible damage scenarios that cannot be identified by visual inspection were simulated numerically. The results showed that only certain types of damage can have a significant effect on the structure’s modal properties. However, the application of DIT was generally successful in identifying the presence and in most cases the location of damage.

Abstract

Safe and healthy working conditions are a legal obligation in most countries. They can also serve as an investment in a healthy business that can lead to positive economic effects. Accidents at work and occupational diseases are neither predetermined nor unavoidable - they always have causes, which are preventable in many cases. International research on the return on investments in prevention proves that every euro invested in safety and health generates a potential benefit of more than two euros in positive economic effects. By building a strong prevention culture, these causes can be eliminated and work-related accidents and occupational diseases are prevented. In this paper, the Health and Safety (H&S) guidelines along their practical approaches of the Construction Sector in Cyprus are presented and evaluated. The applied methodology for the evaluation of the current H&S state is also presented. Through the evaluation, suggestions for future improvements are presented and discussed.

33. Dynamic assessment of a frp suspension footbridge

Abstract

In the past decade, the vibration serviceability of slender footbridges has become the subject of serious investigation. Despite the advantages that FRP materials offer in bridge engineering such as higher strength-to-weight ratio and ease of installation, their use in the construction of slender footbridges has raised concerns with regard to their dynamic response, due to the reduced mass and stiffness of these materials compared with their conventional counterparts. In this paper, the dynamic assessment of a FRP suspension footbridge (the Wilcott footbridge) is described. This is performed using dynamic field testing supported by finite element (FE) modelling: the field testing on the bridge produced values for frequencies, mode shapes and damping which were consequently used to calibrate the FE model. Using the calibrated FE model it was shown that the influence of semistructural or non-structural elements, such as parapets, on the dynamic properties of the structure can be significant. The dynamic response of the structure due to human excitation was also measured during the test. The results confirmed that suspension footbridges built from FRP materials are susceptible to vibrations induced by pedestrians. The response levels of the investigated bridge are lower than the threshold levels specified in the relevant code of practice.

Abstract

The paper presents a multi-objective optimization strategy for a multi-type sensor placement for Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) of long span bridges. The problem is formulated for simultaneous placement of strain sensors and accelerometers (heterogeneous network) based on application demands for SHM system. Modal Identification (MI) and Accurate Mode Shape Expansion (AMSE) were chosen as the application demands for SHM. The optimization problem is solved through the use of integer Genetic Algorithm (GA) to maximize a common metric to ensure adequate MI and AMSE. The performance of the joint optimization problem solved by GA is compared with other established methods for homogenous sensor placement. The results indicate that the use of a multi-type sensor system can improve the quality of SHM. It has also been demonstrated that use of GA improves the overall quality of the sensor placement compared to other methods for optimization of sensor placement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
