Irradiation by energetic ions, electrons, and UV photons induces sputtering and chemical processes (radiolysis) in the surfaces of icy moons, comets, and icy grains. Laboratory experiments, both of ideal surfaces and of more complex and realistic analog samples, are crucial to understand the interaction of surfaces of icy moons and comets with their space environment. This study shows the first results of mass spectrometry measurements from porous water ice regolith samples irradiated with electrons as a representative analogy to water-ice rich surfaces in the solar system. Previous studies have shown that most electron-induced H2O radiolysis products leave the ice as H2 and O2 and that O2 can be trapped under certain conditions in the irradiated ice. Our new laboratory experiments confirm these findings. Moreover, they quantify residence times and saturation levels of O2 in originally pure water ice. H2O may also be released from the water ice by irradiation, but the quantification of the released H2O is more difficult and the total amount is sensitive to the electron flux and energy.

Jupiter's moon Io is a highly compelling target for future exploration that offers critical insight into tidal dissipation processes and the geology of high heat flux worlds, including primitive planetary bodies, such as the early Earth, that are shaped by enhanced rates of volcanism. Io is also important for understanding the development of volcanogenic atmospheres and mass-exchange within the Jupiter System. However, fundamental questions remain about the state of Io's interior, surface, and atmosphere, as well as its role in the evolution of the Galilean satellites. The Io Volcano Observer (IVO) would address these questions by achieving the following three key goals: (A) Determine how and where tidal heat is generated inside Io; (B) Understand how tidal heat is transported to the surface of Io; and (C) Understand how Io is evolving. IVO was selected for Phase A study through the NASA Discovery program in 2020 and, in anticipation of a New Frontiers 5 opportunity, an enhanced IVO-NF mission concept was advanced that would increase the Baseline mission from 10 flybys to 20, with an improved radiation design; employ a Ka-band communications to double IVO's total data downlink; add a wide angle camera for color and stereo mapping; add a dust mass spectrometer; and lower the altitude of later flybys to enable new science. This study compares and contrasts the mission architecture, instrument suite, and science objectives for Discovery (IVO) and New Frontiers (IVO-NF) missions to Io, and advocates for continued prioritization of Io as an exploration target for New Frontiers., Comment: Submitted to The Planetary Science Journal for peer-review on 14 August 2024

Mercury, the innermost planet, formed under highly reduced conditions, based mainly on surface Fe, S, and Si abundances determined from MESSENGER mission data. The minor element Cr may serve as an independent oxybarometer, but only very limited Cr data have been previously reported for Mercury. We report Cr/Si abundances across Mercury's surface based on MESSENGER X-Ray Spectrometer data throughout the spacecraft's orbital mission. The heterogeneous Cr/Si ratio ranges from 0.0015 in the Caloris Basin to 0.0054 within the high-magnesium region, with an average southern hemisphere value of 0.0008 (corresponding to about 200 ppm Cr). Absolute Cr/Si values have systematic uncertainty of at least 30%, but relative variations are more robust. By combining experimental Cr partitioning data along with planetary differentiation modeling, we find that if Mercury formed with bulk chondritic Cr/Al, Cr must be present in the planet's core and differentiation must have occurred at log fO2 in the range of IW-6.5 to IW-2.5 in the absence of sulfides in its interior, and a range of IW-5.5 to IW-2 with an FeS layer at the core-mantle boundary. Models with large fractions of Mg-Ca-rich sulfides in Mercury's interior are more compatible with moderately reducing conditions (IW-5.5 to IW-4) owing to the instability of Mg-Ca-rich sulfides at elevated fO2. These results indicate that if Mercury differentiated at a log fO2 lower than IW-5.5, the presence of sulfides whether in the form of a FeS layer at the top of the core or Mg-Ca-rich sulfides within the mantle would be unlikely., Comment: 37 Pages, 9 figures plus supplementary material including two figures. So far no designated mission to either of the two ice giants, Uranus and Neptune, exists. Almost all of our gathered information on these planets comes from remote sensing. In recent years, NASA and ESA have started planning for future mission to Uranus and Neptune, with both agencies focusing their attention on orbiters and atmospheric probes. Whereas information provided by remote sensing is undoubtedly highly valuable, remote sensing of planetary atmospheres also presents some shortcomings, most of which can be overcome by mass spectrometers. In most studies presented to date a mass spectrometer experiment is thus a favored science instrument for in situ composition measurements on an atmospheric probe. Mass spectrometric measurements can provide unique scientific data, i.e., sensitive and quantitative measurements of the chemical composition of the atmosphere, including isotopic, elemental, and molecular abundances. In this review paper we present the technical aspects of mass spectrometry relevant to atmospheric probes. This includes the individual components that make up mass spectrometers and possible implementation choices for each of these components. We then give an overview of mass spectrometers that were sent to space with the intent of probing planetary atmospheres, and discuss three instruments, the heritage of which is especially relevant to Uranus and Neptune probes, in detail. The main part of this paper presents the current state-of-art in mass spectrometry intended for atmospheric probe. Finally, we present a possible descent probe implementation in detail, including measurement phases and associated expected accuracies for selected species.

Electron impact ionization is critical in producing the ionospheres on many planetary bodies and, as discussed here, is critical for interpreting spacecraft and telescopic observations of the tenuous atmospheres of the icy Galilean satellites of Jupiter (Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto), which form an interesting planetary system. Fortunately, laboratory measurements, extrapolated by theoretical models, were developed and published over a number of years by K. Becker and colleagues (see Deutsch et al. 2009) to provide accurate electron impact ionization cross sections for atoms and molecules, which are crucial to correctly interpret these measurements. Because of their relevance for the Jovian icy satellites we provide useful fits to the complex, semi-empirical Deutsch-Mark formula for energy-dependent electron impact ionization cross-sections of gas-phase water products (i.e., H2O, H2, O2, H, O). These are then used with measurements of the thermal plasma in the Jovian magnetosphere to produce ionization rates for comparison with solar photo-ionization rates at the icy Galilean satellites.

We explore the parameter space for the contribution to Callisto's H corona observed by the Hubble Space Telescope (Roth et al. 2017a) from sublimated H2O and radiolytically produced H2 using the Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method. The spatial morphology of this corona produced via photo- and magnetospheric electron impact-induced dissociation is described by tracking the motion of and simulating collisions between the hot H atoms and thermal molecules including a near-surface O2 component. Our results indicate that sublimated H2O produced from the surface ice, whether assumed to be intimately mixed with or distinctly segregated from the dark non-ice or ice-poor regolith, cannot explain the observed structure of the H corona. On the other hand, a global H2 component can reproduced the observation, and is also capable of producing the enhanced electron densities observed at high altitudes by Galileo's plasma-wave instrument (Gurnett et al., 1997, 2000), providing the first evidence of H2 in Callisto's atmosphere. The range of H2 surface densities explored, under a variety of conditions, that are consistent with these observations is ~(0.4-1)x10^8 cm^-3. The simulated H2 escape rates and estimated lifetimes suggest that Callisto has a neutral H2 torus. We also place a rough upper limit on the peak H2O number density (<~10^8 cm^-3), column density (<~10^15 cm^-2), and sublimation flux (<~10^12 cm^-2 s^-1), all of which are 1-2 orders of magnitude less than that assumed in previous models. Finally, we discuss the implications of these results, as well as how they compare to Europa and Ganymede.

MESSENGER observations suggest a magma ocean formed on proto-Mercury, during which evaporation of metals and outgassing of C- and H-bearing volatiles produced an early atmosphere. Atmospheric escape subsequently occurred by plasma heating, photoevaporation, Jeans escape, and photoionization. To quantify atmospheric loss, we combine constraints on the lifetime of surficial melt, melt composition, and atmospheric composition. Consideration of two initial Mercury sizes and four magma ocean compositions determine the atmospheric speciation at a given surface temperature. A coupled interior-atmosphere model determines the cooling rate and therefore the lifetime of surficial melt. Combining the melt lifetime and escape flux calculations provide estimates for the total mass loss from early Mercury. Loss rates by Jeans escape are negligible. Plasma heating and photoionization are limited by homopause diffusion rates of $\sim10^{6}$ kg/s. Loss by photoevaporation depends on the timing of Mercury formation and assumed heating efficiency and ranges from $\sim10^{6.6}$ to $\sim10^{9.6}$ kg/s. The material for photoevaporation is sourced from below the homopause and is therefore energy-limited rather than diffusion-limited. The timescale for efficient interior-atmosphere chemical exchange is less than ten thousand years. Therefore, escape processes only account for an equivalent loss of less than 2.3 km of crust ($0.3\%$ of Mercury's mass). Accordingly, $\leq0.02\%$ of the total mass of H$_2$O and Na is lost. Therefore, cumulative loss cannot significantly modify Mercury's bulk mantle composition during the magma ocean stage. A simulation tool which utilizes parallel processing is developed to describe molecular kinetics in 2D, single-and multi-component atmospheres on Callisto. This expands on our previous study on the role of collisions in 1D atmospheres on Callisto composed of radiolytic products (Carberry Mogan et al., 2020) by implementing a temperature gradient from noon to midnight across Callisto's surface and introducing sublimated water vapor. We compare single-species, ballistic and collisional O2, H2 and H2O atmospheres, as well as an O2+H2O atmosphere to 3-species atmospheres which contain H2 in varying amounts. Because the H2O vapor pressure is extremely sensitive to the surface temperatures, the density drops several order of magnitude with increasing distance from the subsolar point, and the flow transitions from collisional to ballistic accordingly. In an O2+H2O atmosphere the local temperatures are determined by H2O near the subsolar point and transition with increasing distance from the subsolar point to being determined by O2 When radiolytically produced H2 is not negligible in O2+H2O+H2 atmospheres, this much lighter molecule, with a scale height roughly an order of magnitude larger than that for the heavier species, can cool the local temperatures via collisions. In addition, if the H2 component is dense enough, particles originating on the day-side and precipitating into the night-side atmosphere deposit energy via collisions, which in turn heats the local atmosphere relative to the surface temperature. Finally, we discuss the potential implications of this study on the presence of H2 in Callisto's atmosphere and how the simulated densities correlate with expected detection thresholds at flyby altitudes of the proposed JUpiter ICy moons Explorer (JUICE) spacecraft.

The X-Ray Spectrometer (XRS) on the MESSENGER spacecraft provided measurements of major-element ratios across Mercury's surface. We present global maps of Mg/Si, Al/Si, S/Si, Ca/Si, and Fe/Si derived from XRS data collected throughout MESSENGER's orbital mission. We describe the procedures we used to select and filter data and to combine them to make the final maps, which are archived in NASA's Planetary Data System. Areal coverage is variable for the different element-ratio maps, with 100% coverage for Mg/Si and Al/Si, but only 18% coverage for Fe/Si north of 30 $^{\circ}$ N, where the spatial resolution is highest. The spatial resolution is improved over previous maps by 10-15% because of the inclusion of higher-resolution data from late in the mission when the spacecraft periapsis altitude was low. Unlike typical planetary data maps, however, the spatial resolution of the XRS maps can vary from pixel to pixel, and thus care must be taken in interpreting small-scale features. We provide several examples of how the XRS maps can be used to investigate elemental variations in the context of geological features on Mercury, which range in size from single $\sim$100-km-diameter craters to large impact basins. We study the release of various elements from Callisto's surface into its exosphere by plasma sputtering. The cold Jovian plasma is simulated with a 3D plasma-planetary interaction hybrid model, which produces 2D surface precipitation maps for magnetospheric H+ , O+ , O++ , and S++ . For the hot Jovian plasma, we assume isotropic precipitation onto the complete spherical surface. Two scenarios are investigated: One where no ionospheric shielding takes place and accordingly full plasma penetration is implemented ('no ionosphere' scenario), and one where an ionosphere lets virtually none of the cold plasma but all of the hot plasma reach Callisto's surface ('ionosphere' scenario). In the 3D exosphere model, neutral particles are sputtered from the surface and followed on their individual trajectories. The 3D density profiles show that whereas in the 'no ionosphere' scenario the ram direction is favored, the 'ionosphere' scenario produces almost uniform density profiles. In addition, the density profiles in the 'ionosphere' scenario are reduced by a factor of ~2.5 with respect to the 'no ionosphere' scenario. We find that the Neutral gas and Ion Mass spectrometer, which is part of the Particle Environment Package on board the JUICE mission, will be able to detect the different sputter populations from Callisto's icy surface and the major sputter populations from Callisto's non-icy surface. The chemical composition of Callisto's exosphere can be directly linked to the chemical composition of its surface, and will offer us information not only on Callisto's formation scenario but also on the building blocks of the Jupiter system., Comment: Published in JGR: Space Physics

This paper presents the first experimental sputtering yields for sulphur ions with energies between 10 keV and 140 keV irradiating water ice films on a microbalance. The measured sputtering yields exceed theoretical predictions based on other ion species by a factor of 2 to 3 for most energies. Moreover, the sputtering yield of SF+ molecules is compared to the yield of atomic species S+ and F+. As found for atomic versus molecular oxygen, the sputtering yield caused by molecules is two times higher than expected. Finally, the implications of the enhanced sulphur sputtering yield for Europa's atmosphere are discussed., Comment: Article in press, to appear in Icarus 2018

Characterised by a surface bound exosphere and localised crustal magnetic fields, the Moon was considered as a passive object when solar wind interacts with it. However, the neutral particle and plasma measurements around the Moon by recent dedicated lunar missions, such as Chandrayaan-1, Kaguya, Chang'E-1, LRO, and ARTEMIS, as well as IBEX have revealed a variety of phenomena around the Moon which results from the interaction with solar wind, such as backscattering of solar wind protons as energetic neutral atoms (ENA) from lunar surface, sputtering of atoms from the lunar surface, formation of a "mini-magnetosphere" around lunar magnetic anomaly regions, as well as several plasma populations around the Moon, including solar wind protons scattered from the lunar surface, from the magnetic anomalies, pick-up ions, protons in lunar wake and more. This paper provides a review of these recent findings and presents the interaction of solar wind with the Moon in a new perspective.
