The protective effects of two probiotic mixtures was studied using the fingerprints of the bacterial community of Litopenaeus vannamei juveniles exposed to probiotics and challenged with Vibrio parahaemolyticus CAIM 170. Fingerprints were constructed using 16S rRNA gene and the PCR-SSCP (Single strand conformation polymorphism) technique, and the probiotics used were an experimental Bacillus mixture (Bacillus tequilensis YC5-2 + B. endophyticus C2-2 and YC3-B) and the commercial probiotic Alibio. The DNA for PCR-SSCP analyses was extracted directly from the guts of shrimps treated for 20 days with the probiotics and injected with 2.5*10(5) CFU g-1 of V. parahaemolyticus one week after suspension of the probiotic treatment. Untreated shrimps served as positive (injected with V. parahaemolyticus) and negative (not injected) controls Analysis of the bacterial community carried out after inoculation and 12 and 48 h later confirmed that V. parahaemolyticus was present in shrimps of the positive control , but not in the negative control or treated with the probiotic mixtures. A significant difference in the diversity of the bacterial community was observed between times after infection. The band patterns in 0-12 h were clustered into a different group from that determined after 48 h, and suggested that during bacterial infection the guts of whiteleg shrimp were dominated by gamma proteobacteria represented by Vibrio sp. and Photobacterium sp. Our results indicate that the experimental and the commercial mixtures are suitable to modulate the bacterial community of L. vannamei and could be used as a probiotic to control vibriosis in juvenile shrimp. Se estudiaron los perfiles de bandeo de la comunidad bacteriana de juveniles de Litopenaeus vannamei tratados con dos probióticos y expuesto a la bacteria patógena Vibrio parahaemolyticus CAIM 170. Los perfiles de bandeo se construyeron usando el gen 16S rRNA y la técnica PCR-SSCP (Polimorfismo conformacional de cadena sencilla) y los probióticos fueron una mezcla experimental de Bacillus (Bacillus tequilensis YC5-2 y B. endophyticus C2-2 y C3-B) y el probiótico comercial Alibio. El ADN para el análisis PCR-SSCP se obtuvo de los intestinos de camarones tratados durante 20 días con los probióticos, inyectados con 2,5*10(5) UFC g-1 de V. parahaemolyticus una semana después de la suspensión del tratamiento con probióticos. Camarones no tratados con probióticos sirvieron como control positivo (inyectados con V. parahaemolyticus) y negativo (no inyectados). We determined the Hg content of blood, placenta and umbilical cord of 20 pregnant females of the viviparous Pacific sharpnose shark, Rhizoprionodon longurio and of the livers of the embryos contained in their right and left uterus, aiming to provide information on the amount of this metal offloaded during pregnancy by the mother to the embryos. Hg content varied by close or higher than one order of magnitude in all tissues and showed the decreasing trend: maternal blood > umbilical cord > placenta > embryonic livers, with placenta and embryonic livers significantly lower than maternal blood. There were highly significant correlations (P < 0.001) between the Hg content of maternal blood, cord, and placenta. Those between embryonic livers and maternal blood, cord and placenta were not significant (P > 0.05). The results suggest transplacental Hg transfer and that the liver is not the main site of Hg accumulation. En el presente estudio se determinó el contenido de mercurio en la sangre, placenta y cordón umbilical de 20 hembras del tiburón bironche Rhizoprionodon longurio así como en el hígado de los embriones de los úteros derecho e izquierdo, con el objetivo de proveer información sobre la cantidad de este metal transferida por la madre a sus embriones durante su desarrollo. Los contenidos de Hg variaron hasta un orden de magnitud en todos los tejidos y presentaron el siguiente orden decreciente: sangre materna > cordón umbilical > placenta > hígado de los embriones. Los contenidos de la placenta y el hígado de los embriones fueron significativamente menores al determinado en la sangre materna. Se encontraron correlaciones altamente significativas (P < 0,001) entre el contenido de Hg de la sangre materna, cordón y placenta, mientras que las calculadas entre hígado de los embriones y la sangre materna, cordón y placenta no fueron significativas (P > 0,05). Los resultados sugieren que existe una libre transferencia de Hg y que el hígado no es el sitio principal de acumulación de Hg.

The feeding habits of the sharpnose shark Rhizoprionodon longurio of the SE Gulf of California are described using the stomach contents of 250 specimens (135 males and 115 females) obtained weekly from December 2007 to March 2008 in the two main landing sites of the artisanal fishing fleet of Mazatlan. The mean total length (TL) was 77.7 ± 12.8 cm and the respective ranges for males and females were 60-120 cm and 52120 cm. Size distribution showed two modal groups (juveniles: 52-80 cm, mode 72.5 cm, and adults: 85-140 cm, mode 92.5 cm). Out of the 395 preys identified in 235 stomachs with identifiable contents, the most important were cephalopods (Index of Relative Importance, IRI = 93.1%), mainly Argonauta spp. (IRI = 92.9%). The total IRI value for fish was 5.9%, mostly represented by Oligoplites refulgens and Oligoplites sp. (joint IRI value = 4.8%). The diversity of the stomach contents of males and females was not significantly different, and although the values of diversity, equitability and dietary breadth indexes were lower in juveniles than in adults, ANOSIM analysis did not show differences in dietary habits related to age and sex. The results indicate a specialized feeding behaviour, with Argonauta spp. as preferred prey. This behaviour does not agree with all previous information on R. longurio, and is probably due to local availability of this prey during the sampling period. Se describen los hábitos alimentarios del cazón bironche, Rhizoprionodon longurio a partir del contenido estomacal de 250 especímenes (135 machos y 115 hembras) obtenidos entre diciembre 2007 y marzo 2008 en los dos mayores lugares de desembarque de la flota artesanal de Mazatlán (SE del Golfo de California). La longitud total (LT) media fue 77,7 ± 12,8 cm y varió entre 52 y 120 cm en hembras y 60 y 120 cm en machos. La distribución de tallas evidenció dos grupos modales (juveniles: 52-80 cm, moda 72,5 cm, y adultos: 85-140 cm, moda 92,5 cm). Se identificaron 395 organismos presa en los 235 estómagos con contenidos identificables; los más importantes fueron cefalópodos (IIR = 93,1%), principalmente Argonauta spp. (IIR = 92,9%). El IIR para los peces fue 5,9%, entre los cuales dominaron Oligoplites refulgens y Oligoplites sp. (IIR = 4,8%). No se encontraron diferencias entre la diversidad del contenido estomacal por sexo, y aunque los valores de diversidad, equitabilidad y amplitud de la dieta fueron menores para los juveniles que para los adultos, el análisis ANOSIM no mostró diferencias entre los hábitos alimenticios por edad y sexo. Según estos resultados R. longurio tendría una alimentación selectiva, con Argonauta como presa preferida, probablemente debido a su abundancia durante el periodo de estudio.

The puffer fish Sphoeroides annulatus is an important target species for the artisanal fishing fleets of NW Mexico. To obtain information on population structure of the local stock, we determined the total length and total weight (TL and TW) ranges, sex ratio and reproductive stages of 745 specimens of this species, landed from May 2010 to April 2011 in Teacapán, Sinaloa, NW Mexico. TL ranged from 15 to 40 cm and TW from 100 to 1600 g. There were no differences between mean TL (27.41 ± 4.14 cm) and TW (534.5 ± 226.0 g) of males and females respectively. Sex ratio was not significantly different (χ2 = 0.03, P > 0.05) from 1F:1M. The length-weight relationship for both sexes was TW = 0.044TL2.815, R² = 0.895. The value of the slope b was significantly lower than 3 (P < 0.05), and indicated negative allometric growth. The distribution of maturity stages indicated one main reproductive period from June to September and one less intense, from November to December for females, and in December for males. Size at first maturity (L50%) of females was 26.52 cm and that of males was 27.41 cm. El botete diana Sphoeroides annulatus es un importante recurso pesquero para las flotas pesqueras artesanales del NW de México. Para obtener información sobre la estructura poblacional del stock local, se determinó el rango de longitud total y peso total (TL y TW), proporción sexual y estadios reproductivos de 745 especímenes, desembarcados entre mayo 2010 y abril 2011, en Teacapán, Sinaloa, noroeste de México. No hubo diferencias entre LT promedio (27,41 ± 4,14 cm) y TW promedio (534,5 ± 226,0 g) entre machos y hembras. La proporción entre sexos no resultó significativamente diferente de 1H:1M (χ2 = 0,03; P > 0,05). El modelo de la relación longitud-peso fue TW = 0,044 LT2,815; R2 = 0,895 para ambos sexos. El valor del parámetro b fue significativamente menor que 3, indicando que el tipo de crecimiento es alométrico (b ≠ 3, P < 0,05). La distribución de los estadios de madurez indica un periodo reproductivo principal de junio a septiembre y otro menos intenso de noviembre a diciembre en hembras y en diciembre para machos. La talla de primera madurez (L50%) fue de 26,52 cm en hembras y 27,41 cm en machos.

During the tuna canning process, about 52~54% of the total weight of the fish is discarded as waste, which can be processed in order to obtain tuna byproducts meal (TBM), or stabilized as tuna silage hydrolysates (TSH). Both products were tested as replacements of soybean meal (SBM), in diets for fingerling male Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus. Seven test diets were isonitrogenous (35% CP) and isoenergetic (19 kJ g-1): a basal diet contained SBM as main protein source (TSH0); four experimental diets had increasing inclusion levels of TSH replacing 25, 50, 75 and 100% of the SBM protein. The sixth diet contained TBM as sole protein source, and a commercial feed for tilapia was used as reference diet (RD). The diets were fed for eight weeks to triplicate tanks, each with 15 fry tilapia (initial weight of 0.89 ± 0.29 g). Tilapia fed the TBM diet had greater weight gain and feed intake, and lower feed conversion ratios than those fed diets containing with TSH. The RD, TSH25 and TSH50 diets gave the similar growth response. Fish fed diets TSH0, TSH75% and TSH100% showed reduced growth performance. Durante el proceso de enlatado de atún se desecha aproximadamente el 52-54% del peso total de los peces. Estos desechos pueden ser usados para producir harina de desechos de atún (TBM) o estabilizados como subproductos hidrolizados de atún (TSH). Ambos productos se probaron como sustitutos de harina de soya (SBM), en dietas para alevines de tilapia del Nilo Oreochromis niloticus. Seis dietas con igual contenido de proteína (35%) y energía (19 kJ g-1): una dieta basal con SBM como principal fuente de proteína (TSH0); y cuatro dietas experimentales se prepararon con crecientes niveles de TSH en reemplazo de 25, 50, 75 y 100% de la proteína de soya. La sexta dieta fue preparada con TBM como única fuente de proteína y un alimento comercial fue incluido como dieta referencia (RD). Estas dietas se ofrecieron por triplicado durante ocho semanas a grupos de 15 alevines cada uno, con un peso medio inicial de 0,89 ± 0,29 g. Los peces alimentados con la dieta preparada con TBM presentaron mayor ganancia de peso, mayor consumo de alimento y factor de conversión más eficiente que los alimentados con las dietas RD, TSH25 y TSH50. Con las dietas antes mencionadas, se obtuvieron resultados similares entre sí, mientras que los peces que recibieron dietas TSH0, TSH75% y TSH100% dieron las menores respuestas de crecimiento.

Juveniles (3.5 ± 0.3 g) of the white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei were grown during 40 days with no water exchanges, no food addition and four initial densities (25, 50, 75 and 100 g m-3, corresponding to between 8 and 32 shrimp m-2), to determine growth rates, which could be achieved using the periphyton growing on artificial substrates as the only food source. The experimental culture units were 12 polyethylene 1 m³ cylindrical tanks with 4.8 m² of total submerged surface (bottom and walls), provided with 7.2 m² of artificial substrate (Aquamats™). There were no significant differences in the ammonia and nitrite concentrations determined in the four treatments (0.17-0.19 and 0.10-0.11 mg L-1, respectively), which remained below the respective levels of concern for shrimp cultures. Mean survival was similar, and ranged from close to 91 to 97%, whereas there were significant differences in mean individual weight, which ranged from 11.9-10.6 g shrimp-1 for the two low initial densities (25 y 50 g m-3), to 8.3-7.7 g shrimp-1 for the other treatments. However, because of the high survival and of the higher initial density, the best biomass yield was with 100 g m-3. The final nitrogen contents of sediment and water were lower than the initial values, and between 36 and 60% of the difference was converted into shrimp biomass. Durante 40 días se cultivaron juveniles de camarón blanco Litopenaeus vannamei con un peso individual de 3,5 ± 0,3 g y biomasas iniciales de 25, 50, 75 y 100 g m-3 (equivalente a 8-32 ind m-2), sin cambios de agua y adición de alimento, para determinar la tasa de crecimiento usando como única fuente de alimentación el perifiton desarrollado en sustratos artificiales. Se utilizaron estanques cilíndricos de polietileno de 1 m³ con tres réplicas por tratamiento, con una superficie de 4,8 m² (paredes y fondo) y 7,1 m² de sustrato artificial (Aquamats™). No se encontraron diferencias significativas entre las concentraciones de amonio (0,17-0,19 mg L-1) y nitrito (0,10-0,11 mg L-1) determinadas en los cuatro tratamientos. La supervivencia fue similar, variando entre 91 y 97%. La ganancia en peso individual fue significativamente mayor en los tratamientos con menor biomasa inicial (25 y 50 g m-3), aunque por la mayor densidad inicial, el mejor rendimiento en biomasa se observó en los cultivos sembrados con 100 g m-3. Los contenidos de nitrógeno determinados al final del experimento, en el agua y sedimento, fueron inferiores a los valores iniciales, y entre el 36 y 60% de sus diferencias se recuperaron en biomasa de camarón.

After 29 days without water exchanges, 55% of the total nitrogen (N) inputs were retained as shrimp biomass in 1 m³cultures of juvenile Litopenaeus vannamei with artificial substrates (Aquamats®), in comparison to 37.2 to 44.8% without Aquamats. The N discharged with the effluent was 1.8-2.3% of the inputs, and the sediments contained 35.9-37.3% of the N inputs without Aquamats and 14.7 to 13.6% with Aquamats. In these, close to 16% of the N inputs were in the periphyton, indicating that additional substrates are an attractive alternative for nutrient recycling in shrimp farms operating as closed systems.

The effect on growth and survival of the initial stocking density (30, 20 and 10 eggs L-1) in larval rearing of spotted rose snapper (Lutjanus guttatus) was evaluated. The eggs were incubated in nine black fibreglass tanks with three replicates for treatment. Larvae were cultured in the same tanks using the green water technique. Larvae were harvested at 45 days post-hatch (DDE). Total length (LT), weight (PH) and survival rate (S) were determined. Initial stocking density did not affect growth and survival rates. Therefore, it is advisable to carry out larval culture of the spotted rose snapper using 30 eggs L-1 to maintain good growth levels.

Juveniles of the white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei were exposed during 25 days to the Cu2+ concentration commonly used in Mexican shrimp farms, at salinities of 1, 5, and 10 psu, in order to observe possible histological alterations to the antennal glands, midgut, gills and hepatopancreas. Survival was 100% in controls and treatments, and no histopathologies were observed in gills, midgut and antennal glands. Sloughing of epithelial cells (< 75%), infiltration of hemocytes (< 75%) and reduction in R and B cells (100%) were observed after 10 days in the hepatopancreas of shrimps exposed to Cu2+ at the lowest salinity and, to a lower degree, at salinities of 5 and 10 psu. This should be taken into consideration to establish criteria of acceptable water quality for inland aquaculture, because the interaction metal-salinity may induce adverse shrimp responses. Juveniles del camarón blanco Litopenaeus vannamei fueron expuestos durante 25 días a salinidades de 1, 5, y 10 ups y a la concentración de Cu2+ que se usa comúnmente en las granjas camaronícolas de México, con el propósito de observar posibles alteraciones histológicas en la glándula antenal, intestino medio, branquias y hepatopáncreas. La supervivencia fue de 100% en controles y tratamientos y no se observaron histopatologías en branquias, intestino y glándula antenal. Después de 10 días de exposición al Cu2+ a la salinidad más baja, se observaron en el hepatopáncreas desprendimiento de las células epiteliales (< 75%), infiltración de hemocitos (< 75%), y una reducción de las células R y B (100%). Las mismas alteraciones se presentaron, aunque en menor grado, a las salinidades de 5 y 10 ups. Estos efectos deberían ser considerados para establecer criterios de calidad de agua para el cultivo de camarón en agua continentales, debido a que la interacción metal-salinidad puede inducir respuestas adversas en los camarones.
