1. Types of Short-Duration Electrical Stimulation-Induced Efficiency in the Axonal Regeneration and Recovery: Comparative in Vivo Study in Rat Model of Repaired Sciatic Nerve and its Tibial Branch after Transection Injury.

Abstract

The restoration of adequate function and sensation in nerves following an injury is often insufficient. Electrical stimulation (ES) applied during nerve repair can promote axon regeneration, which may enhance the likelihood of successful functional recovery. However, increasing operation time and complexity are associated with limited clinical use of ES. This study aims to better assess whether short-duration ES types (voltage mode vs. current mode) are able to produce enhanced regenerative activity following peripheral nerve repair in rat models. Wistar rats were randomly divided into 3 groups: no ES (control), 30-minute ES with a current pulse, and 30-minute ES with a voltage pulse. All groups underwent sciatic nerve transection and repair using a silicone tube to bridge the 6-mm gap between the stumps. In the 2 groups other than the control, ES was applied after the surgical repair. Outcomes were evaluated using electrophysiology, histology, and serial walking track analysis. Biweekly walking tracks test over 12 weeks revealed that subjects that underwent ES experienced more rapid functional improvement than subjects that underwent repair alone. Electrophysiological analysis of the newly intratubular sciatic nerve at week 12 revealed strong motor function recovery in rats that underwent 30-minute ES. Histologic analysis of the sciatic nerve and its tibial branch at 12 weeks demonstrated robust axon regrowth in all groups. Abstract

3D topological insulators attract much attention due to their topologically protected Dirac surface states. Doping into topological insulators or their proximity with normal superconductors can promote the realization of topological superconductivity and Majorana fermions with potential applications in quantum computation. Here, an emergent superconductivity is observed in local mesoscopic point‐contacts on the topological insulator Bi2Se3 by applying a voltage pulse through the contacts, evidenced by the Andreev reflection peak in the point‐contact spectra and a visible resistance drop in the four‐probe electrical resistance measurements. More intriguingly, the superconductivity can be erased with thermal cycles by warming up to high temperatures (300 K) and induced again by the voltage pulse at the base temperature (1.9 K), suggesting a significance for designing new types of quantum devices. Nematic behavior is also observed in the superconducting state, similar to the case of CuxBi2Se3 as topological superconductor candidates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Process of the plasma electrodes formation in a neon-filled Pockels cell operating in the two-pulse mode is numerically simulated with a 2-D model of the gas discharge forming the electrodes. The transport of the charged particles and reactions with their participation in the self-consistent electric field is allowing for. Using the developed computer code, time dependencies of the transmission window of the laser radiation and operation voltage, at which the radiation transmission coefficient is maximal, are calculated. Temporal dependence and spatial distribution of the transmission coefficient in the cell cross section are calculated. Calculations are executed for predicting results of planned experiments. They are carried out scaling the results received earlier for the same cell filled with helium with small admixture of oxygen. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

V tem diplomskem delu je predstavljena pot od začetka izdelave modeliranega testnega okolja za izvajanje določenih funkcionalnih testov na merjencu, do testiranja te programske opreme. V tem primeru se testira odziv vezja, ko se mu za kratek čas po določenem časovnem poteku spreminja napajalna napetost. Programska oprema implementira napetostne pulze točno določene oblike okoli napajalne napetosti (pulzi so točno določeni in opisani v standardu), ter iz merjenca zajema podatke. Merjenec je v tem primeru krmilnik za pogonski elektromotor v hibridnem avtomobilu. This thesis presents the process from the beginning of testing environment development for executing specific functional tests on a device, to testing of this software. In this case, the behavior of the circuit is being tested when the supply voltage is superimposed with a series of a predefined voltage pulses for a short period of time. The software implements precisely defined voltage pulses around the supply voltage (the pulses are precisely defined and described in the standard) and captures data from the device under test. In this case, the device under test is an electric motor drive controller in a hybrid car.

Abstract

Plasma immersion ion implantation (PIII) was conducted in a large volume chamber with a current-controlled high-voltage pulser, to test the vacuum, plasma, and PIII conditions, in a preparation for the treatments of large workpieces or the batch-processing mode. For that purpose, a rugged high-power pulser (10 kW average) based on solid-state moderate voltage pulse system (1 kV) was coupled to a high-voltage transformer (1:22) to feed different loaded sample supports placed in different positions inside the chamber. It was found that the plasma, when produced by a hot filament enhanced glow discharge source, is not uniformly distributed in the chamber but despite that, implantation doses are locally uniform within 10% for 10–15-cm distances, along with the supports. Stainless steel 304 (SS304) -type samples were successfully treated with nitrogen PIII and different tests showed improvements on their mechanical and tribological properties.

Abstract

A process of plasma electrodes and optical transmission “window” formation in electrooptical switch (Pockels cell) of high-power laser radiation pulses is studied experimentally and analyzed numerically. A 2-D computer model of a gas discharge, forming the electrodes and allowing for the charged particles transport and reactions kinetics in self-consistent electric field is developed. A time dependence of the optical transmission in various points of the cross section of the cell operating in the two-pulse mode is computed. Abstract

WOS:000551631000036; This paper deals with the extraction from a meniscus of water droplets of small size into an immiscible insulating liquid by the use of a multistage voltage pulse. A previous study on a particular oil established that this EHD Drop-on-demand technique allows producing droplets of size smaller or much smaller than the needle diameter. The case of a dielectric liquid characterized by a rather high value of the water/oil interfacial tension is considered here. It is shown that by adequately modifying the shape and level of the multistage voltage pulse, droplets are produced with a diameter ranging over a large interval. It was expected that the short enough pulse duration would give electrically neutral droplets; in practice it is found that the droplets carry minute but nonzero charges. An explanation is given for the charging mechanism and other changes of the pulse shape allow to further minimize the droplets charge. Finally having in mind the possibility to investigate experimentally the electrocoalescence of two close drops, results are presented concerning the injection of two successive droplets. Abstract

CuO microflowers were successfully synthesized via a hydrothermal route followed with a high-temperature treatment. The characterized results showed that CuO microflowers assembled with nano-spindles (length: ~ 800 nm) were obtained and the diameter of microflowers were 2.0–2.5 μm. The gas sensor based CuO microflowers showed a fine response to H2S at 25 °C and a fast recovery after a 10-s voltage pulse. The response (S = Rg/Ra) of CuO sensor was 9.92 to 1 ppm H2S at room temperature, and it even could detect 50 ppb H2S (S = 1.42). Furthermore, the gas sensor demonstrated excellent selectivity and repeatability. The sensing mechanism of CuO microspheres to H2S was also proposed and discussed. This work indicates that the prepared CuO microflowers have potential application in detecting extreme low-concentration H2S.

Abstract

In this paper the authors present the analysis and interpretation of the results of the immunity tests on a LEDs luminaire with an apparent or suspended mounting FIPAD-08 type, subject to a series of typical simulated disturbances, namely: electrostatic discharges, rapid voltage pulse trains, shock waves, drops, short interruptions and voltage variations. The luminaire for which the photometric curves were reconstructed can also be analyzed from a photometric point of view according to the calculation algorithms proposed in the studies previously conducted by the authors.
