No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2020-11-01 BACKGROUND: Canine embryo cryopreservation and subsequent transfer are relevant in the use of reproductive technologies. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is the identification and quantification of the gene expression BAX and Bcl2, AQP3, Na+/K+ ATPase alpha-1 and beta-1 and LIFr in canine embryos obtained in vivo and after freezing. MATERIALS AND METHODS: For the collection of embryos, the bitches were identified at pro-estrous until the detection of 80-90% superficial cells. After that, they were artificially inseminated with fresh semen. The embryos were collected after ovariohysterectomy. RNA was extracted and amplified, and embryos were randomly distributed into fresh (Fr) and frozen/thawed (Ft) groups. RESULTS: Eighteen blastocysts were collected from three bitches. Genes BAX, AQP3 and LIFr did not differ among the studied groups. CONCLUSION: We suggest, through these results, that the genes BAX, Bcl2, AQP3, Na + / K + ATPase alpha-1 and beta-1 and LIFr were expressed in canine blastocysts collected in vivo and after slow freezing cryopreservation. Most studies on gender and psychosis have focused on gender differences at illness onset or on the long-term outcome, whereas little is known about the impact of gender on the first years after psychosis onset. A total of 185 first episode psychosis (FEP) patients were followed for 5 years after psychosis onset, and gender differences were explored in psychopathology (PANSS), needs for care (CAN), and insight (SAI-E). Male patients showed more negative symptoms than females over time, whereas female patients showed higher levels of depressive symptoms than males throughout the study period. In addition, female patients presented more functioning unmet needs for care, but higher levels of insight into illness than males. Therapy and rehabilitative programs for FEP patients should be gender-targeted, as gender has proved to impact on psychopathology, needs for care, and insight in the very first years following psychosis onset.

We evaluate the partition function of three dimensional theories of gravity in the quantum regime, where the AdS radius is Planck scale and the central charge is of order one. The contribution from the AdS vacuum sector can - with certain assumptions - be computed and equals the vacuum character of a minimal model CFT. The torus partition function is given by a sum over geometries which is finite and computable. For generic values of Newton's constant G and the AdS radius L the result has no Hilbert space interpretation, but in certain cases it agrees with the partition function of a known CFT. For example, the partition function of pure Einstein gravity with G=3L equals that of the Ising model, providing evidence that these theories are dual. We also present somewhat weaker evidence that the 3-state and tricritical Potts models are dual to pure higher spin theories of gravity based on SL(3) and E_6, respectively., Comment: 42 pages

- Abstract
A double-blind study comparing the efficacy and tolerability of dothiepin with that of placebo in the treatment of primary fibromyalgia syndrome was carried out. Dothiepin was shown to improve significantly the condition of patients with primary fibromyalgia syndrome and there was a significant difference between dothiepin and placebo in all the clinical variables measured. Only mild and transient side-effects were reported. Further controlled studies are required to define the effects of dothiepin on fibromyalgia.

- Abstract
In March 2020, physical distancing and quarantine measures were implemented in Brazil, which may have affected the physical and mental health of the population. This cross-sectional study used a convenience sample and telephone-based interviews to identify anxiety symptoms and alcohol use patterns among 1,264 Brazilian primary health care (PHC) patients during the COVID-19 pandemic. The State-Trait Anxiety Inventory-State 6 and Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT-C) questionnaires were used to assess anxiety symptoms and alcohol use patterns, respectively. According to the AUDIT-C results, the prevalence of harmful drinking was 38.5%. Those who reported that their alcohol consumption decreased during the pandemic had high scores on the AUDIT-C, indicating a moderate/severe risk of drinking. Moderate or severe anxiety was observed in 60.1% of participants. These results highlight the needs to assess the pandemic's consequences on the mental health of the population and to encourage the implementation of preventive approaches in PHC settings to address anxiety and harmful alcohol consumption., Competing Interests: Conflict of InterestThe authors declare no competing interests., (© The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2022.)

- Abstract
Objective: The aim of this study was to describe chest computed tomography image findings in patients with COVID-19., Methods: The chest computed tomography scans of 453 hospitalized patients with confirmed COVID-19 were collected at two tertiary care Brazilian hospitals. Demographics and clinical data were extracted from the electronic record medical system., Results: The main chest computed tomography findings were ground-glass opacities (92.5%), consolidation (79.2%), crazy-paving pattern (23.9%), parenchymal bands (50%), septal thickening (43.5%), and inverted halo sign (3.5%). Of the 453 hospitalized patients, 136 (30%) died. In this group, ground-glass opacities (94.1%), consolidation (89.7%), septal thickening (58.1%), crazy-paving pattern (52.2%), and parenchymal bands (39.7%) were the most common imaging findings., Conclusions: In a dynamic disease with a broad clinical spectrum such as COVID-19, radiologists can cooperate in a better patient management. On wisely indicated chest computed tomography scans, the fast identification of poor prognosis findings could advise patient management through hospital care facilities and clinical team decisions.

Background: Canine embryo cryopreservation and subsequent transfer are relevant in the use of reproductive technologies., Objective: The purpose of this study is the identification and quantification of the gene expression BAX and Bcl2, AQP3, Na+/K+ ATPase alpha-1 and beta-1 and LIFr in canine embryos obtained in vivo and after freezing., Materials and Methods: For the collection of embryos, the bitches were identified at pro-estrous until the detection of 80-90% superficial cells. After that, they were artificially inseminated with fresh semen. The embryos were collected after ovariohysterectomy. RNA was extracted and amplified, and embryos were randomly distributed into fresh (Fr) and frozen/thawed (Ft) groups., Results: Eighteen blastocysts were collected from three bitches. Genes BAX, AQP3 and LIFr did not differ among the studied groups., Conclusion: We suggest, through these results, that the genes BAX, Bcl2, AQP3, Na + / K + ATPase alpha-1 and beta-1 and LIFr were expressed in canine blastocysts collected in vivo and after slow freezing cryopreservation.

- Abstract
Background: This prospective, randomised and blind study investigated the efficacy of laserpuncture for postoperative pain management in dogs., Method: Sixteen bitches were sedated with acepromazine and randomly treated before ovariohysterectomy with meloxicam 0.2 mg·kg
-1 intramuscular or laserpuncture (wavelength 904 mm, frequency 124 Hz, potency 10 Joules, 100 s in each acupoint). Anaesthesia was performed with propofol, isoflurane/O2 , and fentanyl. The Glasgow Composite Measure Pain Scale (GCMPS) and Dynamic Interactive Visual Analog Scale (DIVAS) were used to evaluate postoperative pain before and for 24 h after surgery. Morphine was administrated as rescue analgesia when pain scores were ≥3.33 (GCMPS). Differences between treatments, time points, and amount of rescue analgesia between groups were investigated by the Mann-Whitney test and the area under the curve (AUC) for GCMPS, Friedman, and Chi-squared tests, respectively ( p < 0.05)., Results: Dogs treated with laserpuncture presented lower GCMPS AUC for 24 h and lower GCMPS scores at 2 and 4 h postoperatively ( p = 0.04). Three dogs treated with meloxicam required postoperatively rescue analgesia against none treated with laserpuncture., Conclusions: In this preliminary study, laserpuncture mitigated postoperative pain in dogs following ovariohysterectomy, and the technique is a promising adjunct to perioperative pain management in dogs undergoing soft tissue surgery.- Published

- Abstract
Bitches with uteri devoid of endometrial glands should be sterile, and consequently could contribute to the population control of dogs. Considering that an inadequate exposure of the female reproductive system to steroids can lead to the formation of the uterine gland knock-out (UGKO) phenotype in some species, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of serial applications of medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA) from birth until the age of six months on the development of endometrial glands in bitches. For this purpose, 16 female mongrel dogs from different litters were distributed into either an MPA group (n = 8), animals treated with 10 mg kg sc (Promone-E
® , Pfizer, Brasil) at 3-week intervals, from day one after birth until the age of six months, or a control group (n = 8), composed of animals that only received a 0.9% NaCl solution in place of MPA. At six months of age, ovariohysterectomy was performed and uterine horn samples were collected for histological and immunohistochemical examinations. The bitches from the MPA-treated group presented a 35% decrease in the number of endometrial glands, a larger diameter of the endometrial glands, a greater epithelial height, as well as a greater thickness of the uterine wall, endometrium, and myometrium. However, no significant differences were observed between the two groups in the expression of ER-α, ER-β, and PR on the surface epithelium and endometrial stroma. Therefore, the serial application of MPA from birth until the age of 6 months do not completely ablate the development of the endometrial glands in bitches, but impair it by 35%., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflicts of interest.- Published

- Abstract
Paracoccidioidomycosis is an infectious disease characterized primarily by pulmonary involvement and potential dissemination to other organs, mainly mucosa and skin; however, it can affect any organ in the body. Although difficult to diagnose purely based on imaging, imaging is important for diagnosis, follow-up, and assessment of disease-related complications. We provide a comprehensive review of the most notable imaging findings of paracoccidioidomycosis., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.)

- Abstract
Objectives The present study investigated the effect of contraceptive treatment with deslorelin acetate on in vitro embryo production and oocyte recovery in domestic queens. Methods Twenty-one mature domestic cats were used. Eleven queens (treated group) and one tom were kept in an experimental cattery, and 10 queens were privately owned (control group). When in interestrus or diestrus (day 0) a deslorelin acetate implant (Suprelorin, 4.7 mg/animal) was inserted into the subcutaneous tissue of the interscapular region in all queens in the treated group. After 6 months of treatment, all animals were ovariohysterectomized, and the ovaries were used for in vitro embryo production. Percentage of cleavage was determined 18 h after oocyte insemination and blastocyst formation was assessed on the eighth day of culture. The rate of cumulus-oocyte complexes (COCs) recovery was analyzed by an unpaired t-test. The cleavage and blastocyst rates were expressed as percentages and analyzed by Fisher's exact test. All analyses were performed using GraphPad Prism v5.0, with P <0.05 set as the level of significance. Results In the treated group, we recovered 8.3 ± 1.15 grade I COCs per queen; the cleavage rate was 60% and the blastocyst rate was 36%. In the control group, we recovered 18.4 ± 3.21 grade I COCs per queen; the cleavage rate was 55.97% and the blastocyst rate was 34%. Forty percent of treated females did not produce any blastocysts. In the treated group, we observed a significant decrease in COC recovery. Although there was no significant difference in cleavage and blastocyst rates between groups, 40% of treated females did not produce any blastocysts. Conclusions Recovery of grade I COCs is negatively affected by deslorelin treatment in domestic cats. Regarding embryo production, new studies are still necessary to evaluate the success of this technique owing to the individual effect caused by deslorelin acetate.

- Abstract
Objective: To identify the distribution and frequency of computed tomography (CT) findings in patients with nosocomial rapidly growing mycobacterial (RGM) infection after laparoscopic surgery., Method: A descriptive retrospective study in patients with RGM infection after laparoscopic surgery who underwent CT imaging prior to initiation of therapy. The images were analyzed by two radiologists in consensus, who evaluated the skin/subcutaneous tissues, the abdominal wall, and intraperitoneal region separately. The patterns of involvement were tabulated as: densification, collections, nodules (≥1.0 cm), small nodules (<1.0 cm), pseudocavitated nodules, and small pseudocavitated nodules., Results: Twenty-six patients met the established criteria. The subcutaneous findings were: densification (88.5%), small nodules (61.5%), small pseudocavitated nodules (23.1 %), nodules (38.5%), pseudocavitated nodules (15.4%), and collections (26.9%). The findings in the abdominal wall were: densification (61.5%), pseudocavitated nodules (3.8%), and collections (15.4%). The intraperitoneal findings were: densification (46.1%), small nodules (42.3%), nodules (15.4%), and collections (11.5%)., Conclusion: Subcutaneous CT findings in descending order of frequency were: densification, small nodules, nodules, small pseudocavitated nodules, pseudocavitated nodules, and collections. The musculo-fascial plane CT findings were: densification, collections, and pseudocavitated nodules. The intraperitoneal CT findings were: densification, small nodules, nodules, and collections., Key Points: • Rapidly growing mycobacterial infection may occur following laparoscopy. • Post-laparoscopy mycobacterial infection CT findings are densification, collection, and nodules. • Rapidly growing mycobacterial infection following laparoscopy may involve the peritoneal cavity. • Post-laparoscopy rapidly growing mycobacterial intraperitoneal infection is not associated with ascites or lymphadenopathy.

- Abstract
Mullerian duct anomalies (MDAs) are rare, affecting approximately 1% of all women and about 3% of women with poor reproductive outcomes. These congenital anomalies usually result from one of the following categories of abnormalities of the mullerian ducts: failure of formation (no development or underdevelopment) or failure of fusion of the mullerian ducts. The American Fertility Society (AFS) classification of uterine anomalies is widely accepted and includes seven distinct categories. MR imaging has consolidated its role as the imaging modality of choice in the evaluation of MDA. MRI is capable of demonstrating the anatomy of the female genital tract remarkably well and is able to provide detailed images of the intra-uterine zonal anatomy, delineate the external fundal contour of the uterus, and comprehensively image the entire female pelvis in multiple imaging planes in a single examination. The purpose of this pictorial essay is to show the value of MRI in the diagnosis of MDA and to review the key imaging features of anomalies of formation and fusion, emphasizing the relevance of accurate diagnosis before therapeutic intervention.

37. Compactified strings as quantum statistical partition function on the Jacobian torus.

- Abstract
We show that the solitonic contribution of toroidally compactified strings corresponds to the quantum statistical partition function of a free particle living on higher dimensional spaces. In the simplest case of compactification on a circle, the Hamiltonian is the Laplacian on the 2g-dimensional Jacobian torus associated with the genus g Riemann surface corresponding to the string world sheet. T duality leads to a symmetry of the partition function mixing time and temperature. Such a classical-quantum correspondence and T duality shed some light on the well-known interplay between time and temperature in quantum field theory and classical statistical mechanics.

- Abstract
Peripheral vascular disease (PVD) is an indicator of diffuse atherosclerosis and is associated with a greatly increased incidence of coronary heart and cerebrovascular disease. Although several studies have assessed whether in vivo platelet activation takes place in patients with PVD, no data are available comparing different platelet function tests in this patient population. We have compared prospectively four tests for the measurement of in vivo platelet activation (plasma betaTG, plasma PF4, intraplatelet betaTG and urinary excretion of 11-dehydro-TXB2) and one in vitro platelet function test (ADP-induced platelet aggregation) in 63 well-characterized patients with intermittent claudication and in 18 age- and sex-matched healthy volunteers. No statistically significant difference was found between patients and controls for plasma betaTG (20.0 +/- 11.8 vs. 18.8 +/- 9.0 ng/ml, respectively), plasma PF4 (5.2 +/- 2.9 vs. 6.3 +/- 3.5 ng/ml), betaTG/PF4 ratio (4.0 +/- 2.9 vs. 3.6 +/- 1.8), intraplatelet betaTG (4503 +/- 1482 vs. 4059 +/- 1065 ng/ml), and threshold aggregatory concentration of ADP (1.7 +/- 0.72 vs. 1.45 +/- 0.56 microM). Urinary 11-dehydro-TXB2 was instead significantly higher in the PVD group (55.4 +/- 27.5 vs. 26.7 +/- 7.0 ng/h, p <0.001). Our study shows that urinary 11-dehydro-TXB2 is a more sensitive index of in vivo platelet activation than the measurement of either platelet specific proteins or of in vitro platelet aggregation in patients with PVD.

- Abstract
Background: Previous studies relating increased thromboxane (TX) biosynthesis to cardiovascular risk factors do not answer the question whether platelet activation is merely a consequence of more prevalent atherosclerotic lesions or reflects the influence of metabolic and hemodynamic disturbances on platelet biochemistry and function., Methods and Results: We examined 64 patients with large-vessel peripheral arterial disease and 64 age- and sex-matched control subjects. TXA2 biosynthesis was investigated in relation to cardiovascular risk factors by repeated measurements of the urinary excretion of its major enzymatic metabolite, 11-dehydro-TXB2, by radioimmunoassay. Urinary 11-dehydro-TXB2 was significantly (P = .0001) higher in patients with peripheral arterial disease (57 +/- 26 ng/h) than in control subjects (26 +/- 7 ng/h). Seventy percent of patients had metabolite excretion > 2 SD above the normal mean. However, 11-dehydro-TXB2 excretion was enhanced only in association with cardiovascular risk factors. Multivariate analysis showed that diabetes, hypercholesterolemia, and hypertension were independently related to 11-dehydro-TXB2 excretion. During a median follow-up of 48 months, 8 patients experienced major vascular events. These patients had significantly (P = .001) higher 11-dehydro-TXB2 excretion at baseline than patients who remained event free., Conclusions: The occurrence of large-vessel peripheral arterial disease per se is not a trigger of platelet activation in vivo. Rather, the rate of TXA2 biosynthesis appears to reflect the influence of coexisting disorders such as diabetes mellitus, hypercholesterolemia, and hypertension on platelet biochemistry and function. Enhanced TXA2 biosynthesis may represent a common link between such diverse risk factors and the thrombotic complications of peripheral arterial disease.

- Abstract
Fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) is the most useful preoperative work up method for patients with nodular goiter. We analyze 173 patients that underwent FNAB and were subsequently operated. The sample with FNAB was processed both for cytological and histological study, using methods developed at the hospital. The preoperative diagnosis reached was compared with that obtained with the surgical piece. Results showed that the histological analysis of the FNAB sample improved the sensitivity of the method, when compared with the cytological study, from 68.5% to 87.8% (p < 0.035) without modifying specificity (100% for both methods). It is concluded that FNAB with histological study of the sample has a high diagnostic yield and is exempt of complications.

- Abstract
The aim of this study was to prospectively evaluate the accuracy of real-time B-mode ultrasonography in the diagnosis of asymptomatic proximal deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in hip surgery patients. Venography was adopted as the gold standard. We studied 100 consecutive patients undergoing hip surgery: 60 patients for hip fracture and 40 patients for elective hip replacement. Bilateral real-time B-mode ultrasonography was performed prior to bilateral venography. The two diagnostic procedures were performed on the same day by different investigators unaware of the assigned prophylatic regimen for DVT. Compressibility of the vein segment was adopted as the single criterion for DVT. Venography was performed and judged by radiologists unaware of the ultrasonography results. In 13 limbs venography was either impossible to perform or not adequate for judgement. Ultrasonography and an adequate venography was obtained in 187 limbs. A venography proven DVT was observed in 49 limbs (26.2%) and a proximal DVT in 21 limbs (11.2%). All the patients were asymptomatic for DVT. The sensitivity and specificity of real time B-mode ultrasonography for proximal DVT were 57% (95% confidence interval: C.I. 36-80) and 99% (C.I. 99-100), respectively and the positive and negative predictive values were 93% (C.I. 73-100) and 95% (C.I. 91-97), respectively. The sensitivity and specificity for overall DVT were 25% (C.I. 11-38) and 99% (C.I. 97-100), respectively and the positive and negative predictive values were 92% (C.I. 73-100) and 79% (C.I. 76-85), respectively. Our data indicate that real-time B-mode ultrasonography for its high specificity could make venography unnecessary in patients with positive results.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

A personal series of loose diaphyseal fractures of the humeral diaphysis, treated with the hanging plaster case method, has been examined in order to assess results. These were positive in most treated cases, with a complication percentage comparable to that obtainable with other methods. Although it is not considered that the usual treatment of reduction and plaster cast thoraco-brachial immobilisation should be abandoned, it is considered that the hanging cast is an equally valid alternative in all cases in which the patient's general condition represents a contraindication to the application of a bulky chest-extended cast.
