Search

We present a collection of $\sim10,000$ X-ray sources from the 4th XMM-Newton Serendipitous Source Catalog (4XMM-DR13) with literature-verified classifications and multi-wavelength (MW) counterparts. We describe the process by which MW properties are obtained and an interactive online visualization tool we developed., Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure. The Nuclear Spectroscopic Array (NuSTAR) observed the gamma-ray binary LS 5039 for a second time in order to check for the presence of a periodic signal candidate found in the data from the previous NuSTAR observation. We do not detect the candidate signal in the vicinity of its previously reported frequency, assuming the same orbital ephemeris as in our previous paper. This implies that the previously reported periodic signal candidate was a noise fluctuation. We also perform a comparison of the lightcurves from the two NuSTAR observations and the joint spectral fitting. Open clusters are thought to be the birth place of most stars in the Galaxy. Thus, they are excellent laboratories for investigating stellar evolution, and X-ray properties of various types of stars (including binary stars, evolved stars, and compact objects). In this work, we investigate the population of X-ray sources in the nearby 300-Myr-old open cluster NGC 3532 using Chandra X-ray Observatory and multi-wavelength data from several surveys. We apply a random-forest machine-learning pipeline (MUWCLASS) to classify all confidently detected X-ray sources (S/N$>5$) in the field of NGC 3532. We also perform a more detailed investigation of brighter sources, including their X-ray spectra and lightcurves. Most X-ray sources are confirmed as coronally-active low-mass stars, many of which are confidently identified by MUWCLASS. Several late B or early A-type \textbf{stars} are relatively bright in X-rays, most of which are likely binaries. We do not find any compact objects among X-ray sources reliably associated with NGC 3532, down to the limiting X-ray flux of $\sim 2\times10^{-15}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$, corresponding to $L_X\sim 6\times 10^{28}$ erg s$^{-1}$ at the cluster's distance. We also identify several Galactic sources beyond NGC 3532 that differ from typical coronally active stars, and were classified by MUWCLASS as potential compact objects. 4FGL J1015.5-6030 is an unidentified Fermi-LAT source hosting a bright, extended X-ray source whose X-ray spectrum is consistent with that of a young pulsar, yet no pulsations have been found. Here we report on XMM-Newton timing and Chandra imaging observations of the X-ray counterpart of 4FGL J1015.5-6030. We find no significant periodicity from the source and place a 3$\sigma$ upper-limit on its pulsed fraction of 34$\%$. The Chandra observations resolve the point source from the extended emission. We find that the point source's spectrum is well fit by a blackbody model, with temperature $kT=0.205\pm0.009$ keV, plus a weak power-law component, which is consistent with a thermally emitting neutron star with a magnetospheric component. The extended emission spans angular scales of a few arcseconds up to about 30$''$ from the point source and its spectrum is well fit by a power-law model with a photon index $\Gamma=1.70\pm0.05$. The extended emission's spectrum and 0.5-10 keV luminosity of 4$\times10^{32}$ erg s$^{-1}$ (at a plausible distance of 2 kpc) are consistent with that of a pulsar wind nebula. Based on a comparison to other GeV and X-ray pulsars, we find that this putative pulsar is likely a middle-aged (i.e., $\tau\sim 0.1$--1 Myr) radio-quiet pulsar with $\dot{E}\sim10^{34}-10^{35}$ erg s$^{-1}$., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

We present a catalog of X-ray Detected Be Stars (XDBS) with 161 Be stars from the Be Star Spectra (BeSS) database having X-ray counterparts in the Chandra Source Catalog v2.0, XMM-Newton 4XMM-DR11 Catalog, or Swift 2SXPS Catalog. The multi-wavelength catalog includes accurate optical positions, X-ray properties (fluxes, photon indices and hardness ratios), optical, near-infrared and infrared photometry, source classifications (when available), and other properties including proper motions, effective temperatures, X-ray to optical flux ratios as well. We present a convenient tool (ChaSES) which allows to search for extended structures in Chandra X-ray Observatory Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer (ACIS) images. The tool relies on DBSCAN clustering algorithm to detect regions with overdensity of photons compared to the background. Here we describe the design and functionality of the tool which we make publicly available on GitHub. The rapid increase in serendipitous X-ray source detections requires the development of novel approaches to efficiently explore the nature of X-ray sources. If even a fraction of these sources could be reliably classified, it would enable population studies for various astrophysical source types on a much larger scale than currently possible. Classification of large numbers of sources from multiple classes characterized by multiple properties (features) must be done automatically and supervised machine learning (ML) seems to provide the only feasible approach. We perform classification of Chandra Source Catalog version 2.0 (CSCv2) sources to explore the potential of the ML approach and identify various biases, limitations, and bottlenecks that present themselves in these kinds of studies. We establish the framework and present a flexible and expandable Python pipeline, which can be used and improved by others. We also release the training data set of 2941 X-ray sources with confidently established classes. In addition to providing probabilistic classifications of 66,369 CSCv2 sources (21% of the entire CSCv2 catalog), we perform several narrower-focused case studies (high-mass X-ray binary candidates and X-ray sources within the extent of the H.E.S.S. TeV sources) to demonstrate some possible applications of our ML approach. We also discuss future possible modifications of the presented pipeline, which are expected to lead to substantial improvements in classification confidences., Comment: Published in ApJ 941, 104 (2022). The Chandra X-ray Observatory (CXO) imaged the high-mass gamma-ray binary (HMGB) HESS J0632+057 with the Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer (ACIS). We analyzed the CXO data together with 967 ks of archival Swift-XRT observations. On arcsecond scales we find a hint of asymmetric extended emission. On arcminute scales, a region of extended emission ("the blob"), located $\sim$5.5' east of the binary, is seen in both the CXO-ACIS and the Swift-XRT images. The blob does not have a counterpart in the radio, NIR, IR, or optical images. The ACIS spectrum of the blob fits either an absorbed power-law model with photon index $\Gamma\simeq2.6$, or a thermal plasma model with $kT\simeq3$ keV. Since the blob's absorbing column, $N_{\rm H}$, is significantly larger than that of the binary we conclude that the blob and binary are not directly related. The somewhat larger very deep XRT image suggests that the binary may be located within a shell (or cavity). The four ACIS spectra taken within the $\sim$20 day interval near the light curve minimum suggests that the $N_{\rm H}$ is varying on timescales of days, possibly due to the inhomogeneous circumbinary environment. The XRT spectra extracted from the wider orbital phase intervals support significant changes in $N_{\rm H}$ near the light curve maximum/minimum, which may be responsible for the substantial systematic residuals seen near 1 keV, and provide tentative evidence for a Fe line at 6.4 keV. We report on the search for very-high-energy gamma-ray emission from the regions around three nearby supersonic pulsars (PSR B0355+54, PSR J0357+3205 and PSR J1740+1000) that exhibit long X-ray tails. To date there is no clear detection of TeV emission from any pulsar tail that is prominent in X-ray or radio. We provide upper limits on the TeV flux, and luminosity, and also compare these limits with other pulsar wind nebulae detected in X-rays and the tail emission model predictions. We find that at least one of the three tails is likely to be detected in observations that are a factor of 2-3 more sensitive. The analysis presented here also has implications for deriving the properties of pulsar tails, for those pulsars whose tails could be detected in TeV., Comment: 21 pages, 6 figures

LS 5039 is a high-mass gamma-ray binary hosting a compact object of unknown type. NuSTAR observed LS 5039 during its entire 3.9 day binary period. We performed a periodic signal search up to 1000 Hz which did not produce credible period candidates. We do see the 9.05 s period candidate, originally reported by Yoneda et al. 2020 using the same data, in the Fourier power spectrum, but we find that the statistical significance of this feature is too low to claim it as a real detection. We also did not find significant bursts or quasi-periodic variability. The modulation with the orbital period is clearly seen and remains unchanged over a decade long timescale when compared to the earlier Suzaku light curve. The joint analysis of the NuSTAR and Suzaku XIS data shows that the 0.7-70 keV spectrum can be satisfactory described by a single absorbed power-law model with no evidence of cutoff at higher energies. The slope of the spectrum anti-correlates with the flux during the binary orbit. Therefore, if LS 5039 hosts a young neutron star, its X-ray pulsations appear to be outshined by the intrabinary shock emission. The lack of spectral lines and/or an exponential cutoff at higher energies suggests that the putative neutron star is not actively accreting. Although a black hole scenario still remains a possibility, the lack of variability or Fe K$\alpha$ lines, which typically accompany accretion, makes it less likely., Comment: Accepted to ApJ

We report the discovery of a bright X-ray source in the XMM-Newton and Chandra X-ray Observatory (CXO) images of the unidentified Fermi-LAT source 3FGL J1016.5-6034. The XMM-Newton spectrum of the source is well fit by an absorbed blackbody+power-law model with a temperature, $kT=0.20\pm0.02$ keV, and photon index $\Gamma=1.8\pm0.1$. The CXO resolves the same source into a point source (CXOU J101546.0-602939) and a surrounding compact nebula seen up to about $30''$ from the point source. The CXO spectrum of the nebula can be described by an absorbed power-law with $\Gamma=1.7\pm0.3$ and is partly responsible for the non-thermal emission observed in the XMM-Newton spectrum. The XMM-Newton images also reveal faint extended emission on arcminute scales. These properties strongly suggest that the X-ray source and the accompanying extended emission are a newly discovered young pulsar with a pulsar wind nebula. We also analyze $\sim10$ years of Fermi-LAT data and find that the improved LAT source localization is consistent with the position of CXOU J101546.0-602939., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

The young energetic pulsar J1747-2958 ($\tau=26$ kyr, $\dot{E}=2.5\times 10^{36}$ erg s$^{-1}$) powers the Mouse pulsar wind nebula (PWN), famous for its spectacular tail spanning 45$"$ in X-rays and 12$'$ in radio ($d\sim5$ kpc). We present the results of Chandra observations of the PWN and the analysis of archival lower-frequency data. The Chandra HRC image reveals a point-like source at the pulsar position, $\approx$1$'$ behind the bow shock apex of the PWN. The flattened appearance of the compact nebula is consistent with an equatorial outflow deformed by the ram pressure, implying that the angle between the pulsar's spin axis and line of sight is $\sim70^\circ$ (in agreement with the radio and $\gamma$-ray pulse profiles). The spatially-resolved spectroscopy with Chandra ACIS shows that the power-law (PL) spectrum steepens from $\Gamma=1.65\pm0.02$ to $3.0\pm0.1$ over the 45$'$ extent of the X-ray tail. However, the tail's X-ray spectrum integrated over its 45$"$ length fits a single absorbed PL with $\Gamma=2.09\pm0.03$. We also found the Mouse PWN in 150 MHz GMRT data, and a possible counterpart in 24 ${\rm \mu}$m Spitzer data. The multiwavelength data suggest that, at low frequencies, the spectrum of the X-ray-emitting tail region can be described by a broken PL with at least one turnover between radio and X-rays. This is consistent with synchrotron cooling of electrons injected at the termination shock (with an SED slope of 2.2) in an equipartition magnetic field $B\sim200$ ${\rm \mu G}$ and a bulk flow speed $v\sim4000$ km s$^{-1}$., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We report the results of three Chandra observations covering most of the extent of the TeV gamma-ray source HESS J1616-508 and a search for a lower energy counterpart to this source. We detect 56 X-ray sources, of which 37 have counterparts at lower frequencies, including a young massive star cluster, but none of them appears to be a particularly promising counterpart to the TeV source. The brightest X-ray source, CXOU J161423.4-505738 with a flux of 5x10^{-13} c.g.s. in the 0.5-7.0 keV band, has a hard spectrum that is well fit by a power-law model with a photon index of 0.2+/-0.3 and is a likely intermediate polar CV candidate. No counterparts of this source were detected at other wavelengths. CVs are not known to produce extended TeV emission, and the source is also largely offset (19') from HESS J1616-508, making them unlikely to be associated. We have also set an upper limit on the X-ray flux of PSR J1614-5048 in the 0.5-8 keV band (F<5x10^{-15} c.g.s. at a 90% confidence level). This makes PSR J1614-5048 one of the least X-ray efficient pulsars known, with an X-ray efficiency {\eta}=L_x/Edot < 2x10^{-5} in the 0.5-8 keV band. We find no evidence supporting the association between the pulsar and the TeV source. We rule out a number of X-ray sources as possible counterparts to the TeV emission and do not find a plausible counterpart among the other sources. Lastly, we discuss the possible relation of PSR J1617-5055 to HESS J1616-508 in light of the new observations., Comment: Accepted to ApJ

The simplest theories often have much merit and many limitations, and in this vein, the value of Neutral Theory (NT) has been the subject of much debate over the past 15 years. NT was proposed at the turn of the century by Stephen Hubbell to explain pervasive patterns observed in the organization of ecosystems. Its originally tepid reception among ecologists contrasted starkly with the excitement it caused among physicists and mathematicians. Indeed, NT spawned several theoretical studies that attempted to explain empirical data and predicted trends of quantities that had not yet been studied. While there are a few reviews of NT oriented towards ecologists, our goal here is to review the quantitative results of NT and its extensions for physicists who are interested in learning what NT is, what its successes are and what important problems remain unresolved. Furthermore, we hope that this review could also be of interest to theoretical ecologists because many potentially interesting results are buried in the vast NT literature. We propose to make these more accessible by extracting them and presenting them in a logical fashion. We conclude the review by discussing how one might introduce realistic non-neutral elements into the current models., Comment: 55 pages, 8 figures

HESS J1809-193 is an extended TeV gamma-ray source in the Galactic Plane. Multiwavelength observations of the HESS J1809-193 field reveal a complex picture. We present results from three CXO and two Suzaku observations of a region in the northeastern outskirts of HESS J1809-193, where enhanced TeV emission has been reported. Our analysis also includes GeV gamma-ray and radio data. One of the X-ray sources in the field is the X-ray binary XTE J1810-189, for which we present the outburst history from multiple observatories and confirm that XTE J1810-189 is a strongly variable type I X-ray burster, which can hardly produce TeV emission. We investigate whether there is any connection between the possible TeV extension of HESS J1809-193 and the sources seen at lower energies. We find that another X-ray binary candidate, Suzaku J1811-1900, and a radio supernova remnant, SNR G11.4-0.1, can hardly be responsible for the putative TeV emission. Our multiwavelength classification of fainter X-ray point sources also does not produce a plausible candidate. We conclude that the northeast extension of HESS J1809-193, if confirmed by deeper observations, can be considered as a dark accelerator - a TeV source without visible counterpart at lower energies., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

We present observations of the eccentric gamma-ray binary B1259-63/LS2883 with the Chandra X-ray Observatory. The images reveal a variable, extended about 4'', or about 1000 times the binary orbit size) structure, which appears to be moving away from the binary with the velocity of 0.05 of the speed of light. The observed emission is interpreted as synchrotron radiation from relativistic particles supplied by the pulsar. However, the fast motion through the circumbinary medium would require the emitting cloud to be loaded with a large amount of baryonic matter. Alternatively, the extended emission can be interpreted as a variable extrabinary shock in the pulsar wind outflow launched near binary apastron. The resolved variable X-ray nebula provides an opportunity to probe pulsar winds and their interaction with stellar winds in a previously inaccessible way., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, 1 table; submitted to ApJ

We observed the double neutron star binary (DNSB) containing PSR J1537+1155 (also known as B1534+12) with the Chandra X-ray Observatory. This is one of the two DNSBs detected in X-rays and the only one where a hint of variability with orbital phase was found (in the previous Chandra observation). Our follow-up observation supports the earlier result: the distribution of photon arrival times with orbital phase again shows a deficit around apastron. The significance of the deficit in the combined dataset exceeds 99%. Such an orbital light-curve suggests that the X-ray emission is seen only when neutron star B passes through the equatorial pulsar wind of neutron star A. We describe statistical tests we used to determine the significance of the deficit, and conclusions that can be drawn from its existence, such as interaction of the pulsar wind with the neutron star companion. We also provide better constrained spectral model parameters obtained from the joint spectral fits to the data from both observations. A power-law successfully fits the data, with best-fit photon index Gamma=3.1pm0.4 and unabsorbed flux f=(3.2pm0.8)x10^-15 erg s-1cm-2 (0.3-8 keV range)., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

The theory of island biogeography[1] asserts that an island or a local community approaches an equilibrium species richness as a result of the interplay between the immigration of species from the much larger metacommunity source area and local extinction of species on the island (local community). Hubbell[2] generalized this neutral theory to explore the expected steady-state distribution of relative species abundance (RSA) in the local community under restricted immigration. Here we present a theoretical framework for the unified neutral theory of biodiversity[2] and an analytical solution for the distribution of the RSA both in the metacommunity (Fisher's logseries) and in the local community, where there are fewer rare species. Rare species are more extinction-prone, and once they go locally extinct, they take longer to re-immigrate than do common species. Contrary to recent assertions[3], we show that the analytical solution provides a better fit, with fewer free parameters, to the RSA distribution of tree species on Barro Colorado Island (BCI)[4] than the lognormal distribution[5,6]., Comment: 19 pages, 1 figure

We have carried out molecular dynamics simulations of the crystallization of hard spheres modelling colloidal systems that are studied in conventional and space-based experiments. We use microscopic probes to investigate the effects of gravitational forces, polydispersity and of bounding walls on the phase structure. The simulations employed an extensive exclusive particle grid method and the type and degree of crystalline order was studied in two independent ways: by the structure factor, as in experiments, and through local rotational invariants. We present quantitative comparisons of the nucleation rates of monodisperse and polydisperse hard sphere systems and benchmark them against experimental results. We show how the presence of bounding walls leads to wall-induced nucleation and rapid crystallization and discuss the role of gravity on the dynamics of crystallization., Comment: 28 pages, 13 figures
