Springs are abundant and present worldwide and are among the most threatened ecosystems on Earth. The main aim of this study was to evaluate the biodiversity of seventy-nine (79) mineral saline springs situated in the French Massif Central, focusing on the species richness and the estimated richness and also on the diatom community composition. The influence of physical and chemical factors on both richness and communities was analyzed in order to have a better knowledge of the diatom ecological preferences and identify species typical of saline springs. Since December 2014, an on-going inventory of mineral springs has been in progress. For each spring, physical and chemical characteristics were measured, and benthic diatoms were sampled. The richness was the lowest in the springs presenting a man-made construction around the emergence. In the other springs, the highest richness was associated with the lowest lithium, sodium, total dissolved solid concentrations, and conductivity. Mineralization and some ions (bromine, calcium, chloride, fluoride, lithium, potassium, and sodium) were found to be the most critical drivers of diatom community composition. Some diatom species were typical of specific abiotic conditions, such as Navicula sanctamargaritae, which was associated with the highest potassium concentration. Light and scanning electron microscope observations on the genus Fontina gen. nov. from a thermo-mineral spring of the Massif Central (France) are presented. Based on morphology, the new genus shows features that have not been described previously, such as the stria pattern, interrupted at the valve face/mantle junction and composed of one long, slit-like areola on both valve face and mantle. Externally, areolae are closed by hymenes. Fontina arverna sp. nov. is described as the typus generis of Fontina. This new genus was compared with some similar freshwater genera such as Adlafia, Chamaepinnularia, Genkalia, Germainiella, Microfissurata and Nupela. So far, we are unable to establish an evolutionary link or cladistic association with currently known genera. The new genus is described from a sampling site characterized by high conductivity and high carbonate concentration, brackish conditions and whose water originates deep in the crust (high lithium concentration). Thermo-mineral springs are specific ecosystems with extreme environmental conditions that constitute interesting models for studying metacommunity processes. Since these springs can be considered as islands within a terrestrial context, we first aimed to test some predictions of the theory of island biogeography and the distance-decay hypothesis on benthic diatom communities. Then, we aimed to quantify the influence of physical, chemical, climatic and spatial factors on species assemblages. We evaluated the species-area relationship for all springs and for several group of springs classified according to their environmental and hydrochemical composition. The influence of environmental variables on α-diversity was tested. We also investigated whether β-diversity was related to spring isolation or changes in environmental conditions. Finally, we determined the importance of environmental and spatial variables in shaping diatom communities using ordination and variation partitioning. We did not find any species-area relationship whatever the group of springs investigated, and no geographical distance-decay pattern was observed. We found a significant effect of physical and chemical parameters on α-diversity and composition. Thus, diatoms communities of thermo-mineral springs did not seem to be influenced by dispersal processes at the scale of our study but appeared to be patterned by physical and chemical factors. Climate change is having an increasingly rapid impact on ecosystems and particularly on the issue of water resources. The Internet of Things and communication technologies have now reached a level of maturity that allows sensors to be deployed more easily on sites to monitor them. The communicating node based on LoRaWAN technology presented in this article is open and allows the interfacing of numerous sensors for designing long-term environmental monitoring systems of isolated sites. The data integration in the cloud is ensured by a workflow driving the storage and indexing of data, allowing a simple and efficient use of the data for different users (scientists, administration, citizens) through specific dashboards and extractions. Although a strong link between viruses and prokaryotes is commonly known to exist in aquatic systems, few studies have investigated their relationship in spring waters. In the French Massif Central, certain springs are known to exhibit varying levels of naturally occurring radioactivity. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine the standing stock of viruses together with prokaryotes and determine the potential environmental factors influencing them in springs characterized by contrasted radioactivity gradient. Among the investigated 15 spring habitats, flow cytometry analyses indicated that both viral (VA) and prokaryotic abundances (PA) varied by an order of magnitude accompanied by virus-to-prokaryote ratio ranging between 8 and 144.2. Significant differences in VA was evident among springs where low abundances (mean ± SD: 21.3 ± 7.0 × 107 VLP l−1) corresponded to high (mean ± SD: 1911 ± 814.0 nGy h−1) gamma (γ) dose radiation (222Rn) and vice versa. Adverse effect of water radioactivity (222Rn) on VA could perhaps corroborate our hypothesis of drastic effect of ionizing radiations on viruses, which might explain for lack of significant relationship between PA and VA. Actuellement, un consensus a été atteint pour protéger et restaurer les bras morts. Par conséquent, il est important de comprendre le fonctionnement de ces zones humides. Á notre connaissance, la distribution spatio-temporelle des diatomées, des macrophytes et des macroinvertébrés benthiques, en relation avec la géomorphologie n'a pas été étudiée de manière approfondie. Dans les zones amont et intermédiaire, la faible température de l'eau et les fortes concentrations ioniques ont révélé une connexion avec l'eau de nappe. De plus, le seuil géomorphologique, qui caractérise la zone intermédiaire, a créé les mêmes phénomènes de circulation de l'eau dans les sédiments que dans les rivières, avec un écotone « nappe phréatique/milieu hyporhéique/eau de surface » et produit des différences physico-chimiques entre l'amont et l'aval du bras mort et ainsi modifie la distribution des organismes. En aval, les apports d'eau du chenal principal de la rivière Allier ont permis le développement de taxons observés dans la rivière. Toutes ces connexions hydrologiques et la sédimentation ont modifié les caractéristiques physiques, chimiques et géomorphologiques, créant ainsi un gradient de qualité de l'eau, qui influence la répartition des communautés biologiques. Currently, a consensus has been reached to protect and restore cut-off meanders. Therefore, it is important to understand how these wetlands function. To our knowledge, the spatial and temporal distribution of both benthic diatoms and macroinvertebrates, associated with macrophytes communities, linked to the geomorphology, has not been studied extensively. In the upstream and intermediate zones, the low water temperature and the high conductivity revealed a connection with the groundwater. Moreover, the geomorphological riffle characterizing the intermediate zone created the same downwelling and upwelling processes as in running water, with a groundwater/hyporheic/surface water ecotone and produced physico-chemical differences between the upstream and the downstream zones and thereby modify the diatom, macroinvertebrate and macrophyte distribution. Downstream, water input from the main channel of the Allier River allowed the development of taxa observed in the River. All these hydrological connections and the sedimentation modified the physical, chemical and geomorphological characteristics, thereby, creating a gradient of water quality, influencing the distribution of the biotic communities. The present study provides the first quantitative assessment of the deteriorative impact of forest clearance on susceptible sandstone masonries. At Ta Keo, a 1000 yr-old temple cleared of the Angkor forest in the early 20th century, GIS-based analysis of historic imagery indicates an average ten-fold increase in stone loss rates (0.2 instead of 0.02% per year). This accelerated decay is assigned to the climatic stress provoked by the exposure of fragile ornamented sandstones to the harsh impact of tropical sunshine and monsoon rains. Comparative climate monitoring with the Beng Mealea temple, still located in a forested environment, suggests a three-fold post-clearance increase in daily temperature and humidity ranges, which is conducive to enhanced swelling-shrinking movements responsible for accelerated sandstone contour scaling. Comparative visual assessment based on a customised 7-point scale of mechanical weathering confirms the protective role of canopy, with 79% of decorative motifs still almost free of mechanical weathering in the forest (against 7% at the cleared site). Disruption of archaeological structures by roots of individual trees can be locally observed at Angkor, but this does not negate the dominant overall buffering function of the forest cover. At Angkor and other cultural heritage sites, this bioprotective 'umbrella effect' should be considered as a valuable ecosystem service to be taken into account when defining and implementing strategies of sustainable management. This paper presents the first well-dated palaeoenvironmental study from the Sarliève marsh, a unique sedimentary record in the Limagne plain of central France, where all previous studies suffered from unreliable chronologies. We developed an accurate radiocarbon-based age-depth model and performed high-resolution multi-proxy sedimentological and geochemical analysis on a new sediment core from the heart of the sedimentary basin, improving the chronology and Holocene palaeoenvironmental interpretations. We found six potential (crypto)tephra fallouts (c. 9750, 8500, 7500, 7400, 6300, and 5800 cal yr BP) that enrich the Holocene tephrostratigraphy in Limagne, five of which were not previously documented in the sediments of the marsh. We also detected, for the first time, an array of volcanic phenomena such as degassing episodes (c. 6950 and 6050 cal yr BP), ash leaching phases (10250–9750, 8500–7400, and 5800–5100 cal yr BP), and earthquakes (c. 6800, 6600, 6050, 6100, and 1600 cal yr BP), suggesting a hitherto unsuspected period of high volcanic activity in the area between 7500 and 5800 cal yr BP. This increased activity appears to have caused a massive forcing of hydrosedimentary dynamics in the catchment in the Middle Holocene, by supplying significant volumes of fine volcanic ash to the palustrine basin, and thereby questioning the current Holocene morpho-sedimentary narrative for Limagne. The basin became a permanent freshwater lake after the Mid-Holocene climatic shift, and detrital influxes likely due to anthropogenic soil erosion appeared c. 5500 cal yr BP and grew steadily after 5000 cal yr BP, with a marked lull between 3600 and 3000 cal yr BP, perhaps because of a phase of settlement abandonments during the middle and early-late Bronze age. A series of lacustrine low-stands (c. 4750–4600, 3750–3600, 3350–3200 and 2950–2800 cal yr BP) that correlate strongly with western alpine lake records do not seem to have caused significant changes in the anthropogenic impact on soils modifying the sedimentary supply. Our results suggest that this lake could have been artificially drained c. 2550 cal yr BP, several centuries earlier than previously estimated, allowing us to hypothesize that Early Iron age societies already had substantial capacity to modify the hydraulic environment. Polar regions are very sensitive to climate variability. Glacial environments, such as Spitsbergen, respond drastically to climate warming by the disintegration of ice masses, release of huge amounts of free water and rapid evolution of terrestrial landforms. Paraglacial studies have shown that sediment yield decreases with time following a relaxation curve. The study examines the effects of scaling on rhythms of deglaciation and sediment fluxes in a small catchment. It appears that the paraglacial sequence, known as a morphogenic crisis, could be affected by internal small threshold events which are able to mobilize large quantities of sediment. Structure from Motion (SfM) photogrammetry, on-site hardness and water absorption tests, and petrographical and porosimetric analyses on targeted samples were carried out on representative areas within six different locations of Maltese fortifications affected by salt weathering. The objective was to quantify the limestone loss over the last half-millennium and to attempt to identify the controlling factors of durability. The results highlight the existence of a two-rate weathering regime within the Miocene Globigerina Limestone which is the main building stone of the Maltese Islands. With a median stone recession of 1.4 mm/century, the subtype locally called Franka has resisted atmospheric aggression on average 36 times better than the Soll subtype (median stone recession of 50 mm/century). The Oligo-Miocene Coralline Limestone has also resisted well, with a stone recession of on average 1.3 mm/century. Two main controls of the varying durability of these limestones have been identified. First, the water uptake capacity of the least durable, already weathered limestone (Soll) is two to three times higher than that of the weathered but more resistant Franka and Coralline Limestone (6.3 g.m−2.s−1 against 2.5 g.m−2.s−1). Second, there is a marked difference in cohesiveness between these limestones. Whereas the weathered, susceptible Soll facies is poorly-cemented or microcracked, the exposed durable Franka displays an abundant micritic and microsparitic matrix. The statistical relationship between durability and surface hardness is not straightforward, and other controls such as the clay content of limestones should be explored. Investigating a larger number of sites would allow the refining of the limestone durability scale inferred from the present study. • SfM photogrammetry and on-site tests were carried out on Maltese fortifications. • A two-rate weathering regime was highlighted within the building limestones. • Cohesiveness and water uptake capacity were identified as controlling factors. • There is no straightforward correlation between durability and surface hardness. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) controls the degradation and sequestration of aquatic pollutants and, in turn, water quality. In particular, pollutant degradation is performed by oxidant species that are generated by exposure of DOM to solar light, yet, since DOM is a very complex mixture of poorly known substances, the relationships between potential oxidant precursors in DOM and their oxydative capacity is poorly known. Here, we hypothesized that production of oxidant species could be predicted using fluorescence analysis. We analysed water samples from an alluvial plain by fluorescence spectroscopy; the three-dimensional spectra were then decomposed into seven individual components using a multi-way algorithm. Components include a protein-like fluorophore, e.g. tryptophan-like and tyrosine-like, three humic fluorophores, 2-naphthoxyacetic acid, and a by-product. We compared component levels with the ability of water samples to generate reactive species under solar light. The results show a strong correlation between reactive species production and the intensity of two humic-like fluorophores assigned to reduced quinones. Monitoring these fluorophores should thus allow to predict the ability of DOM degradation of pollutants in surface waters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A floristic survey was performed on a temporary pond, "Laqui du Seignavoux", situated in the Mont-Dore massif of the French Massif Central, between 2017 and 2019. Except in 2017, each year, we performed four sampling campaigns from April/May to December. Water samples and diatoms were collected. The temporary pond evolved from a poorly mineralized ecosystem due to snow, inducing oligotrophic and oligosaprobic water, well oxygenated in spring, to a more mineralized, less oxygenated, eutrophic–hypereutrophic, and polysaprobic environment in summer. This change in abiotic conditions was found to be linked to the presence of cattle, beginning in May, that trample and excrete in the pond, leading to higher ammonium and nitrate concentrations. During this period, the dominant species were Pinnularia sp., Nitzschia palea, and Nitzschia palea var. tenuirostris. In spring and winter, different species of Eunotia dominated the community such as Eunotia pseudogroenlandica. Finally, light microscopy (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observations on a new species of the genus Pinnularia from the temporary pond are presented and the ecological preferences are discussed. Pioneer riparian trees which establish in river active tracts on gravel bars enhance fine sediment retention during high flows within their stands and in their lee side, forming obstacle marks. Fine sediment retention can be accompanied by deposition of seeds transported by water dispersal, i.e. by hydrochory. We tested the hypothesis that pioneer riparian trees significantly control seed deposition on gravel bars by forming sediment obstacle marks. We described the seed bank structure and compared samples collected from obstacle marks and bare coarse-grained bar surfaces. At the surface (at 2 cm depth), seed abundance ( N ) and richness ( S ) (expressed as mean ± sd) were significantly higher in areas directly affected by riparian trees, i.e. obstacle marks, ( N : 693 ± 391; S : 17 ± 3) than in bare surfaces ( N : 334 ± 371; S : 13 ± 5). Surface and sub-surface (at 20 cm depth) samples were also significantly different, with the sub-surface samples almost devoid of seeds (respectively N : 514 ± 413; S : 15 ± 5 and N : 3 ± 6; S : 1 ± 2). These results suggest a biogeomorphic feedback between sediment and associated seed retention mediated by hydrochory, vegetation growth and local seed dispersal mediated by barochory. Successful invasion is often due to a combination of species characteristics (or invasiveness) and habitat suitability (or invasibility). Our objective was to identify preferred habitats and suitable environmental conditions for the African tulip tree Spathodea campanulata (Bignoniaceae), one of the most invasive alien trees on the tropical island of French Polynesia (South Pacific Ocean), in relation to its distribution and photosynthesis capacity. Spathodea abundance and leaf chlorophyll fluorescence Fo', ETRmax, and Y(II) effective were examined in relation to topography and micro-climate along elevational transects between 140 m and 1,300 m. Results showed that Spathodea is (1) present up to 1,240 m with lowest maximum July-October (cool season) temperature of 9.4 °C and an average July-October temperature of 14.6 °C, (2) is able to colonize slope steepness of more than 45°, (3) is well represented in the elevational range of 140-540 m as well as in the native forests between 940 m and 1,040 m, suggesting a high threat for native and endemic plants species. Along one of the transects, in the elevation range of 541-940 m, Spathodea was under-represented, Chl fluorescence Fo' increased significantly while Y(II)effective decreased significantly supporting the hypothesis that this range is a non-preferred environment, probably due to microclimate conditions characterized by punctual air dryness. Among Spathodea plants surveyed along a wetter transect, Y(II)effective and ETRmax were comparable from low elevation to mid-high elevation indicating that the potential photosynthesis rate of Spathodea may be similar from sea level until mid-high elevation. Major infestations on the island of Tahiti were reported on the leeward (drier and urbanized) west coast, but Spathodea has also been recently found on the slopes of the windward (wetter) east coast. Chlorophyll fluorescence measurements indicate a high photosynthetic capacity among Spathodea in wet environments suggesting that Spathodea will become invasive across most of the island of Tahiti. The development of the Neolithic way of life in the western Mediterranean during the sixth millennium cal. BC is the consequence of the spread of populations from the Near East after successive stages of cultural remodelling. Despite the clear contribution of the Near Eastern and Aegean Neolithic to the economic and technical changes that happened to the west, little is known here about their symbolic legacies, because of the scarcity of representations and ritual evidences associated to the earliest western Neolithic contexts. Excavations at the rock shelter of Pendimoun (southeastern France) yielded the first anthropomorphic stone sculpture from the western Mediterranean Neolithic (early sixth millennium cal. BC). Using both carving and painting techniques, it represents a realistic-looking human face and is a unique example within the western Mediterranean and European frameworks.
