Flax fibres were investigated as candidate to replace glass fibres reinforcements in structural composites with better environmental performance. Development of bio-composite materials involves investigation in: characterization of flax fibres, preparation and characterization of two woven reinforcements and evaluation of composite properties. Technical flax fibres planted in Croatia and processed in laboratory conditions were used. With the aim of obtaining highly oriented flax roving yarns, sliver of fibres were sized using pre-wet process. Two reinforcements in plain wave were woven on the weaving loom - bidirectional and unidirectional. Two unsaturated polyester resin based bio-composites reinforced with four layers of flax fibre woven rovings (first with four layers of bidirectional woven roving ; and second with four layers of unidirectional woven roving alternately placed at angle of 90°) were prepared by the hand lay-up technique at room temperature. The mechanical properties of composites were evaluated through tensile, flexural and interlaminar shear strength tests.
