Objective: to compare the immediate effects of low-frequency TENS employment on vocal quality in women with behavioral dysphonia before and after vocal exercises. Methodology: 30 women (mean = 31.3 years old), diagnosed with behavioral dysphonia received low-frequency TENS before (TENS + VE Group) and after vocal exercises (VE + TENS Group) with a 1-week washout. They had their sustained vowel/a/and running speech recorded before and after each procedure for auditory-perceptual analysis and acoustic measures. The low-frequency TENS parameters applied were symmetrical biphasic quadratic pulse, 200 µs phase, 10 Hz frequency, intensity on the motor threshold, and the electrodes were positioned on the submandibular and superior fibers of the trapezius muscle region. The vocal exercises: tongue trill, humming, finger kazoo, and water resistance therapy were performed totalizing 20 min. Results: intragroup analysis of sustained vowel/a/showed reduction in both groups of strain parameter and increased the breathiness; only VE + TENS Group increased the instability parameter, decreased fundamental frequency, and increased in SPI values; the running speech analysis showed an increase in the overall degree, roughness, and breathiness parameters. However, in VE + TENS Group, there was a statistically significant decrease in the intensity of the strain and an increase in breathiness. The acoustic measures showed that VE + TENS Group had a higher variation than TENS + VE Group regarding NHR. Conclusion: vocal exercises followed by low-frequency TENS have more immediate positive effects on voice quality than the low-frequency TENS followed by vocal exercises. Background: The need for telepractice and digital treatment has increased due to issues this revision.regarding medical access and the COVID-19 pandemic. However, in many countries, telepractice is rarely performed. The purpose of this pilot study was to describe the detailed process of telepractice in patients with hyperfunctional voice disorder and investigate its effects. Methods: The three subjects who were enrolled in this pilot study had hyperfunctional voice disorders. The evaluation was performed face to face. Auditory perceptual evaluation, acoustic evaluation, aerodynamic evaluation, patient self-evaluation, and interviews were conducted. Treatment was delivered by telepractice using a smartphone application. Results: In quantitative analysis of auditory perceptual evaluation, acoustic evaluation, aerodynamic evaluation, and patient self-evaluation, all subjects showed improved voice after treatment. In-depth analysis of telepractice was performed through the interview. Conclusions: Telepractice was effective in patients with voice disorders, and the patients were satisfied with this approach. In addition to this pilot study, further large-scale studies are required, but telemedicine may improve treatment outcomes and patient satisfaction in cases where medical access is limited or during outbreaks of respiratory infections like COVID-19. A disordered voice may significantly impair the ability of workers to perform optimally on the job, especially those classified as professional voice users (PVU). Voice therapy is a common treatment option for voice disorders, but there are few studies demonstrating its effect on work productivity. The objective of this study was to evaluate the change in work productivity in PVU after group voice therapy. Prospective cohort study Academic Voice Center PVUs whose primary treatment for their voice disorder was voice therapy were recruited. Participants completed a 7-week group voice therapy course from January 2018 to December 2020. Participants completed the validated Work Productivity and Activity Impairment questionnaire (WPAI) which measured presenteeism (on the job work productivity impairment) and absenteeism (time missed from work), general self-efficacy scale (GSES), and Voice handicap index -10 (VHI-10) before and after group voice therapy. Changes in scores before and after therapy were compared using a Wilcoxon Signed-Rank test. Twenty-seven PVU were recruited; 25 had complete data (100% female, mean age 45.4 years, 68% teachers). Presenteeism (SD) decreased from 72.0% (23.3) to 36.8% (24.8), which represented a significant improvement of 35.2% (27.8) [95% CI 21.7-38.7; P < 0.001]. Activity impairment decreased from 48.4% (32.0) to 25.6% (23.8), which represented a significant improvement of 22.8% (26.5) [95% CI 20.7-37.0; P < 0.00]. There was no change in absenteeism (P = 0.27). Patients had high mean GSES of 34.4 (3.7) and abnormal mean VHI-10 of 18.2 (7.2). Changes in VHI-10 and GSES were not significant. Objectives: This study investigated the effectiveness of a specialized manual physical therapy (PT) program at improving voice among patients diagnosed with concomitant muscle tension dysphonia (MTD) and cervicalgia at a tertiary care voice center. Materials and Methods: Cervicalgia was determined by palpation of the anterior neck. Both voice therapy (VT) and PT was recommended for all patients diagnosed with MTD and cervicalgia. PT included full-body manual physical therapy with myofascial release. Patients underwent: 1) VT alone, 2) concurrent PT and VT (PT with VT), 3) PT alone, 4) VT, but did not have PT ordered by treating clinician (VT without PT order) or 5) VT followed by PT (VT then PT). The pairwise difference in post–Voice Handicap Index-10 (VHI-10) controlling for baseline variables was calculated with a linear regression model. Results: 178 patients met criteria. All groups showed improvement with treatment. The covariate-adjusted differences in mean post–VHI-10 improvement comparing the VT alone group as a reference were as follows: PT with VT 9.95 (95% confidence interval 7.70, 12.20); PT alone 8.31 (6.16, 10.45); VT without PT order 8.51 (5.55, 11.47); VT then PT 5.47 (2.51, 8.42). Conclusion: Among patients diagnosed with MTD with cervicalgia, treatment with a specialized PT program was associated with improvement in VHI-10 scores regardless of whether they had VT. Objective: Ample literature shows voice and swallowing therapy, in‐person or virtual, to be essential for Otolaryngology and Speech‐Language Pathology care. In March 2023, Medicare announced discontinuing teletherapy reimbursement in hospital‐based outpatient departments, effective May 2023. This decision was subsequently reversed; however, the uncertain interval period provided the opportunity to study the impact of eliminating teletherapy. Study Design: Prospective cohort. Setting: Tertiary laryngology center. Methods: Affected Medicare patients were contacted via mailed letter, phone, and secure patient portal and offered to change appointments to in‐person, teletherapy with cash self‐payment ($165‐282/session) or cancellation. Demographics and responses were collected. Statistical analyses conducted using Student's t test. Results: Fifty‐three patients (28 female; mean age 66.8 ± 14.2 years) were impacted. 64% (n = 34) changed to in‐person appointment, 28% (n = 15) canceled, 8% (n = 4) did not respond. No patients opted to self‐pay. 67% of patients that canceled telehealth care cited distance from in‐person care location. The mean distance for canceled versus rescheduled patients was 92.3 ± 93.0 versus 32.8 ± 57.4 miles, P =.034. Mean age, gender, and number of sessions were not different between groups. Mean time to third next available therapy appointment was 96 ± 46 versus 46 ± 12 days before and after rule change, P =.007. Upon Medicare's reversal, this trend rebounded to nearly baseline (mean 77 ± 12 days, P =.12). Conclusion: Medicare's discontinuation of reimbursement for teletherapy services caused nearly 30% of patients to cancel voice and swallowing therapy, primarily due to distance. These cancellations led to decreased access to care for Medicare patients with voice/swallowing diagnoses, which affect function, quality of life, and potentially even mortality risk. Some evidence suggests that the best outcomes may be achieved when patients are offered pre- and post-operative voice therapy in addition to phonosurgery, but what constitutes pre- and post-operative voice therapy is poorly described. The pre- and post-operative voice therapy (PAPOV) intervention has been developed and described according to the TIDieR checklist and Rehabilitation Treatment Specification System (RTSS) for voice. The PAPOV intervention is delivered by specialist speech and language therapists trained in the intervention and comprises 7 essential and 4 additional components, delivered in voice therapy sessions with patients who are having surgery on their vocal folds for removal of BVFLs. Study design Non-randomised, multicentre feasibility trial with embedded process evaluation. Method Forty patients from two sites who are due to undergo phonosurgery will be recruited to receive the PAPOV intervention. Measures of feasibility, including recruitment, retention, and adherence, will be assessed. The feasibility of gathering clinical and cost effectiveness data will be measured pre-treatment, then at 3 and 6 months post-operatively. An embedded process evaluation will be undertaken to explain feasibility findings. Discussion This study will assess the feasibility of delivering a described voice therapy intervention protocol to patients who are undergoing surgery for removal of BVFLs. Findings will be used to inform the development and implementation of a subsequent effectiveness trial, should this be feasible. Voice interventions for transgender individuals can address several speech and voice parameters – fundamental frequency, resonance, intonation, rhythm, and intensity. In this study, we focus on fundamental voice frequency and build on existing research to test one technique that has been shown in a preliminary study to effectively adjust fundamental voice frequency in line with clients' goals. More specifically, we employed an adaptation of melodic intonation therapy (MIT) to assess whether it can raise trans women's average fundamental frequency to a significant degree. Eleven trans women participated in two one-to-one therapy sessions, four weeks apart. Results pointed to a statistically significant rise in both their singing and speaking fundamental frequencies following the adapted MIT therapy sessions. Participants were also successful in imitating upward fundamental frequency contours when singing and in producing them independently in the speech modality. Objective: Despite gender-affirming laryngological services (GALS; eg, voice therapy or surgery) being available nationwide, there is a discrepancy between the number of transgender and gender diverse (TGD) people with vocal incongruence and those who pursue services. Primary care is an important setting for accessing gender-affirming care, including learning about GALS. The purpose of this study was to understand the relationship between access to primary care and utilization of GALS. Methods: An anonymous cross-sectional online survey was developed in REDCap. Between June-November 2022, 187 TGD respondents answered all questions related to this analysis. We assessed the relationship between having a primary care provider (PCP) and use of GALS via logistic regression. Results: Of the 167 individuals who reported having a PCP, 54% reported familiarity with GALS, compared to 45% of individuals without a PCP. Compared to the group without a PCP, a greater proportion of individuals with a PCP had received professional voice therapy (21% vs 5%) and voice surgery (3% vs 0%). Logistic regression models did not demonstrate a significant effect of primary care access on either familiarity with, or use of, GALS. Conclusion: Most respondents (89%) were linked to the medical community through a PCP. A greater proportion of respondents with a PCP had accessed professional voice therapy and voice surgery compared with respondents without a PCP, though this difference was not statistically significant. Increased communication between GALS providers and PCPs would raise awareness of available services and may strengthen the referral pipeline to increase access to vocal care. Vocal fold nodules are the most common etiology of chronic dysphonia in the pediatric population. Voice therapy is an effective first line of treatment, with increasing evidence supporting the use of telepractice in speech pathology. Despite this, there is limited data on its effectiveness in the pediatric population. The aim of this retrospective study was to investigate the feasibility and efficacy of telepractice in delivering voice therapy to children diagnosed with vocal fold nodules. A retrospective review was conducted of patients treated with virtual voice therapy from April 2020 to June 2021. Patients were included if diagnosed with vocal fold nodules, 2-18 years of age, and completed therapy in a virtual format. Data includes demographics, Consensus Auditory-Perceptual Evaluation of Voice (CAPE-V) scores and pediatric Voice Handicap Index (pVHI) scores. Twenty-three children were included, 17 (74%) male and six (26%) female (with an age range of 2.4-9.9 years at the start of therapy). Prior to treatment, the average CAPE-V Overall Severity score was 37.9 (SD 13.8); the average posttreatment score was 22.4 (SD 10.2). The average pVHI total score prior to treatment was 26.3 (SD 12.1), with an average posttreatment score of 20.2 (SD 11.7). Patients who underwent virtual voice therapy had improved posttreatment CAPE-V severity scores than those prior to treatment (average difference = -15.5 points; 95% CI: -8.3 to -22.7; P < 0.001). An increased number of therapy sessions was associated with both higher initial CAPE-V severity scores (r = 0.72; P < 0.01) and a greater decrease in posttreatment CAPE-V scores (r = -0.55; P < 0.01). Virtual voice therapy may be feasible and efficacious in treating dysphonic children diagnosed with vocal fold nodules. Significant improvements were found in perceptual CAPE-V scores in overall severity; positive changes were also seen in parental measures of quality of life. The purpose of the study was to examine gender-related differences in benign vocal fold mass treatment. Adult patient with vocal fold mass diagnosed on strobovideolaryngoscopy examination were reviewed retrospectively. Patient demographics, past medical history, laboratory data, and examination findings during the initial visit and at follow-up were collected. The duration of voice therapy and the prevalence of surgery were analyzed for males and females. One hundred and fifty-eight patients (76 male and 82 female) were included. The percentage of professional voice users differed significantly between males and females. Vocal folds of females had a higher percent of reactive masses present. Females were also more likely to have a pseudocyst. Vocal folds of males showed a higher percent of masses of unspecified category on strobovideolaryngoscopy examination. A significantly greater proportion of females had abnormal high shimmer values, and abnormal low maximum phonation time; and a significantly greater proportion of females compared to males chose to participate in voice therapy. The average number of voice therapy sessions for males did not differ, nor did duration of voice therapy. A similar proportion of males and females underwent surgical mass excision. The treatment plan completed differed significantly between males and females with a higher percentage of males choosing to receive no treatment. For 45.54% of males and 59.70% of females the treatment plan consisted of voice therapy only. For 33.33% of males and 37.31% of females, the treatment plan included both voice therapy and surgery. Although gender was the strongest predictor for participation in voice therapy, professional voice uses also predicted participation in voice therapy in both men and women significantly. Professional singing in particular was not a significant predictor for participation in voice therapy. Males were significantly more likely than females to be lost to follow-up before treatment outcome could be assessed More females than males were found to have pseudocysts while more males than females had unspecified masses. Females and professional voice users were more willing than males to utilize voice therapy. No difference was found between males and females who decided to have surgery. The best treatment regimen for vocal fold mass is a combination of voice therapy and surgery, when necessary, but gender-specific differences merit further research as well as reconsideration of therapy approaches and strategies to optimize patient compliance. Age-related voice changes are characterized as breathy, weak and strained, and a deterioration in vocal function in the elderly has been putatively linked to a reduced intensity of speech. They contribute to undesirable voice changes known as presbyphonia. These changes are caused by histological alterations in the lamina propria of the vocal fold mucosa and atrophy of the thyroarytenoid muscle, as well as by decreased respiratory support. There are several clinical studies on presbylarynx dysphonia showing the effectiveness of voice therapy. However, physiological changes of the presbylarynx following voice therapy have not been verified. The purpose of this prospective study was to demonstrate the clinical effectiveness of voice therapy for rehabilitating presbylarynx dysphonia, using vocal function assessments and thyroarytenoid muscular activity detection on laryngeal electromyography (LEMG). 10 patients who were diagnosed with aged vocal fold atrophy from ages 60 to 87 years (mean age: 72 years) underwent approximately 12 weeks of voice therapy, mainly using forward-focused voice and vocal resistance training. Stroboscopic examination, aerodynamic assessment, acoustic analysis, Voice Handicap Index (VHI)-10, and LEMG were performed pre– and post–voice therapy. Vocal fold vibratory amplitude (VFVA) was measured by image analysis from the stroboscopic examinations. Turns analysis during steady phonation on LEMG was also assessed. Maximum phonation time, subglottic pressure, jitter, shimmer, VFVA, and VHI-10 significantly improved after voice therapy. The number of turns per second on LEMG also significantly increased. Our data suggest that voice therapy may improve vocal function and thyroarytenoid muscle activity in patients with aged vocal fold atrophy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: The main purpose of this study was to retrospectively evaluate the efficiency of DoctorVox voice therapy in psychogenic dysphonia or aphonia patients, and to share the mid- to long-term results of the method. Methods: The study was carried out on patients who underwent DoctorVox voice therapy for psychogenic dysphonia or aphonia between January 2015 and September 2019. The evaluation methods used were: the Voice Handicap Index-10; the grade, roughness, breathiness, asthenia and strain ('GRBAS') scale; and videolaryngostroboscopy recordings. Results: The mean Voice Handicap Index-10 values of the patients were 30.91 ± 2.97 before treatment, 8.14 ± 3.82 after treatment, and 3.36 ± 1.78 in the final follow-up examination. The grade, roughness, breathiness, asthenia and strain scale scores were: 9 ± 0.67 pre-treatment, 0.78 ± 0.80 post-treatment, and 0.57 ± 0.64 at the final follow up. Conclusion: DoctorVox voice therapy seems to be an efficient treatment method for psychogenic dysphonia or aphonia; it helps develop phonatory muscle functions, using multidimensional biofeedback mechanisms, and increases the patients' therapy adherence. Objective: To identify characteristics associated with successful electrolarynx (EL) use after total laryngectomy (TL). Methods: Records of 196 adults who underwent TL from 03/15/2012 to 03/15/2022 at the University of Washington and Puget Sound Veterans Affairs were reviewed. Characteristics included age, Charlson Comorbidity Index, social support, pre‐operative radiation (RT) and chemoradiation (CRT), and 6‐month post‐TL swallow status. EL success was evaluated using pre‐defined criteria of intelligibility, reliability, and independence with use. Poisson regressions and robust standard error estimates were used to estimate unadjusted risk ratios for each characteristic. Statistically significant characteristics were included in multivariate analysis (MVA) to estimate adjusted risk ratios. Results: Median age was 64, median Charlson Comorbidity Index was 5, 170 (87%) were male, 159 (81%) had high social support, and 159 (81%) attained post‐TL full‐oral diet. Pre‐operatively, 110 (56%) had RT, including 55 (28%) with CRT. Ninety‐three (47%) met our criteria for EL success. Characteristics significantly associated with EL success included social support (p =.037) and post‐TL full‐oral diet (p =.037); both approached significance on MVA. EL success varied by pre‐operative treatment on univariate (p =.005) and MVA (p =.014). Compared to no prior RT or CRT, the probability of EL success was 29% higher with prior RT and 29% lower with prior CRT in MVA, although these associations did not reach significance. Conclusions: In this retrospective review, EL success correlated with high social support, post‐TL full‐oral diet, and pre‐operative treatment history. These results warrant validation in a larger prospective study to help guide the choice of voice rehabilitation modalities or intensified speech therapy. Level of Evidence: 4. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Voice therapy is a complex behavioural intervention. Understanding its components is integral for continued advancement of voice therapy research, translation of evidence into the clinical setting and improved client care. The Motor Learning Classification Framework (MLCF) offers an excellent opportunity for increasing such knowledge, specifically in relation to identifying variables that affect motor learning (ML), an important mechanism hypothesised to bring about voice change during voice therapy. The MLCF has shown promising results in identifying speech-language pathologists' (SLPs) use of ML variables during experimentally controlled voice therapy contexts. The purpose of this study was to test the feasibility of applying the framework in the clinical context of everyday voice therapy practice. Data consisted of two video-recorded voice therapy sessions representing usual voice therapy care. Classification of ML variables used by SLPs during the recorded sessions was attempted based on the MLCF. Several problematic features of the framework were identified. Based on deliberations between the authors of the current paper, the MLCF was revised using an iterative process. This resulted in the construction of an updated version of the framework (MLCF-V2). The MLCF-V2 organises ML strategies into two broad categories: directly observable behaviours and learning processes. The framework incorporates greater consideration of theory and empirical evidence supporting motivational, attentional focus and subjective error estimation influences on ML. Several examples of each ML variable are included as well as an attempt to provide clearer classification instruction. It is anticipated that the MLCF-V2 will provide a more useful and reliable classification for use in future investigations of SLPs' use of ML variables during usual voice therapy practice. Objective: Muscle tension dysphonia (MTD) is the most common functional voice disorder. Behavioral voice therapy is the front‐line treatment for MTD, and laryngeal manual therapy may be a part of this treatment. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of manual circumlaryngeal therapy (MCT) on acoustic markers of voice quality (jitter, shimmer, and harmonics‐to‐noise ratio) and vocal function (fundamental frequency) through a systematic review with meta‐analysis. Data Sources: Four databases were searched from inception to December 2022, and a manual search was performed. Review Methods: The PRISMA extension statement for reporting systematic reviews incorporating a meta‐analysis of health care interventions was applied, and a random effects model was used for the meta‐analyses. Results: We identified 6 eligible studies from 30 studies (without duplicates). The MCT approach was highly effective on acoustics with large effect sizes (Cohen's d > 0.8). Significant improvements were obtained in jitter in percent (mean difference of −.58; 95% CI −1.00 to 0.16), shimmer in percent (mean difference of −5.66; 95% CI −8.16 to 3.17), and harmonics‐to‐noise ratio in dB (mean difference of 4.65; 95% CI 1.90–7.41), with the latter two measurements continuing to be significantly improved by MCT when measurement variability is considered. Conclusion: The efficacy of MCT for MTD was confirmed in most clinical studies by assessing jitter, shimmer, and harmonics‐to‐noise ratio related to voice quality. The effects of MCT on the fundamental frequency changes could not be verified. Background: Reports of acoustic changes in the voice in individuals with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and the relationship of acoustic changes with age and cognitive status are still limited. Objective: This study aims to determine the changes in voice analysis results in AD, as well as the effects of age and cognitive status on voice parameters. Methods: The study included 47 (AD: 30; healthy: 17) women with a mean age of 76.13 years. The acoustic voice parameters mean fundamental frequency (F0), relative average perturbation (RAP), jitter percent (Jitt), shimmer percent (Shim), and noise‐to‐harmonic ratio were detected. The mini‐mental state examination (MMSE) was utilized. Results: F0, Shim, Jitt, and RAP values were found to be statistically significantly higher in individuals with AD compared to healthy individuals. There was a significant negative correlation between MMSE and F0, Jitt, RAP and Shim, and the MMSE score had a significant negative effect on F0, Jitt, and RAP (p <.05). Conclusion: Cognitive status was discovered to significantly impact the voice, with fundamental frequency and frequency and amplitude perturbations increasing as cognitive level decreases. Benign vocal fold lesions cause dysphonia by preventing vocal fold closure, causing irregular vibration and increasing compensatory muscle tension. Voice therapy delivered in addition to phonosurgery may improve voice and quality of life outcomes but the evidence base is lacking and what constitutes voice therapy for this population is not defined. The purpose of this systematic review is to critically evaluate the evidence for pre and post-operative voice therapy to inform the development of an evidence based intervention. Systematic Review. Electronic databases were searched using key terms including dysphonia, phonosurgery, voice therapy and outcomes. Eligible articles were extracted and reviewed by the authors for risk of bias and for information regarding the content, timing and intensity of any pre and post-operative voice therapy intervention. Of the 432 articles identified, 35 met the inclusion criteria and were included in the review. 5 were RCTs, 2 were individual cohort studies, 1 was a case control study and 26 were case series. There was considerable heterogeneity in participant characteristics. Information was frequently lacking regarding the content timing and intensity of the reported voice therapy intervention, and where present, interventions were highly variable. Reporting in relevant literature is limited in all aspects of content, timing and intensity of intervention. Objectives: Optimal vocal care for transgender patients necessitates regular follow‐up. Factors associated with loss of follow‐up in voice patients have never been investigated. In this study, we report a case series of transgender patients seeking vocal care at our institution and compare those who were and were not lost to follow‐up. Methods: Charts of transgender patients diagnosed with gender dysphoria who sought vocal care at our institution from January 2018 through May 2022 were reviewed. A chronological timeline of each patient's care at our vocal clinic was recorded. Loss of follow‐up was defined as instances in which patients were not yet satisfied with their vocal outcomes and expressed interest in scheduling a subsequent visit but had not yet done so. Logistic regressions were performed to identify factors associated with loss of follow‐up. Results: Of 73 patients identified, 59 (80.8%) were assigned male at birth, and 72 (98.6%) were non‐Hispanic White. Loss of follow‐up occurred in 35 (47.9%) patients. Patients who received vocal surgery were significantly less likely to be lost to follow‐up (OR: 0.16 (0.03, 0.79); p = 0.03). The availability of telemedicine options for vocal care was protective against loss of follow‐up (OR: 0.09 (0.02, 0.44); p = 0.003). Patients who received other non‐voice gender‐affirming treatments concomitant to their vocal care were more likely to be lost to follow‐up (OR: 4.44 (1.35, 14.59); p = 0.01). Conclusion: Loss of follow‐up in transgender patients receiving vocal care is common. Providing telemedicine options and encouraging patients to complete vocal care prior to or after receiving other non‐voice gender‐affirming treatments may help increase rates of follow‐up. Objective: Age‐related vocal atrophy (ARVA) can dramatically affect voice, communication, and quality of life. The objectives of this systematic review were to (1) determine whether treatments for ARVA were superior to controls (2) compare the relative efficacy of procedural and behavioral treatments (3) review the various types of outcome measures, and (4) evaluate the quality of studies. Review Methods: The literature was searched using strategies designed by a medical librarian (2/18/21, updated 3/9/22). Studies investigating treatments for bilateral vocal atrophy were included. Studies involving unilateral atrophy, presbyphonia (without endoscopic findings), or an absent comparator group were excluded. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta‐analyses checklist was used to guide this study. Results: After applying the inclusion/exclusion criteria, 8 articles remained, including 4 randomized trials and 4 cohort studies, and a narrative synthesis was performed. Surgical and behavioral treatments for ARVA appeared to be superior to control groups, based on specific outcome measures. However, the superiority of these treatments over controls was not uniformly observed across multiple outcome measures. When comparing different treatments, superiority could not be established based on the quality and completeness of the studies included in the systematic review. Outcome measures also varied between individual studies. Finally, the risk of bias was analyzed and scored. Consistent point deductions among reviewed studies were noted. Conclusions: When comparing treatments for ARVA. Surgery and voice therapy were both superior to control groups based on specific outcome measures from different domains. Abstract Objective To identify characteristics associated with successful electrolarynx (EL) use after total laryngectomy (TL). Methods Records of 196 adults who underwent TL from 03/15/2012 to 03/15/2022 at the University of Washington and Puget Sound Veterans Affairs were reviewed. Characteristics included age, Charlson Comorbidity Index, social support, pre‐operative radiation (RT) and chemoradiation (CRT), and 6‐month post‐TL swallow status. EL success was evaluated using pre‐defined criteria of intelligibility, reliability, and independence with use. Poisson regressions and robust standard error estimates were used to estimate unadjusted risk ratios for each characteristic. Statistically significant characteristics were included in multivariate analysis (MVA) to estimate adjusted risk ratios. Results Median age was 64, median Charlson Comorbidity Index was 5, 170 (87%) were male, 159 (81%) had high social support, and 159 (81%) attained post‐TL full‐oral diet. Pre‐operatively, 110 (56%) had RT, including 55 (28%) with CRT. Ninety‐three (47%) met our criteria for EL success. Characteristics significantly associated with EL success included social support (p = .037) and post‐TL full‐oral diet (p = .037); both approached significance on MVA. EL success varied by pre‐operative treatment on univariate (p = .005) and MVA (p = .014). Compared to no prior RT or CRT, the probability of EL success was 29% higher with prior RT and 29% lower with prior CRT in MVA, although these associations did not reach significance. Conclusions In this retrospective review, EL success correlated with high social support, post‐TL full‐oral diet, and pre‐operative treatment history. These results warrant validation in a larger prospective study to help guide the choice of voice rehabilitation modalities or intensified speech therapy. Level of Evidence 4.

Intractable hiccups are a rare yet debilitating pathology with a broad differential and often indicate a more serious underlying pathology, which can range from neoplasms to structural abnormalities. In this case report, we present a 64-year-old male with seven months of intractable hiccups determined to be caused by eventration of the right hemidiaphragm. The patient was treated with baclofen to treat the hiccups pharmacologically. He was also prescribed voice therapy to establish rescue breathing techniques and reduce laryngospasm. Finally, he was referred to thoracic surgery for further evaluation and potential surgical intervention should his diaphragmatic eventration worsen or cause hypoxemia. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of an association between diaphragmatic eventration and intractable hiccups. It is important to highlight this addition to the broad differential of intractable hiccups and to emphasize an interdisciplinary approach to workup and treatment of intractable hiccups.

Abstract Objective Use of computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulations to measure the changes in upper airway geometry and aerodynamics during (a) an episode of Exercise‐Induced Laryngeal Obstruction (EILO) and (b) speech therapy exercises commonly employed for patients with EILO. Methods Magnetic resonance imaging stills of the upper airway including the nasal and oral cavities from an adult female were used to re‐construct three‐dimensional geometries of the upper airway. The CFD simulations were used to compute the maximum volume flow rate (l/s), pressure (Pa), airflow velocity (m/s) and area of cross‐section opening in eight planes along the vocal tract, separately for inhalation and exhalation. Results Numerical predictions from three‐dimensional geometrical modeling of the upper airway suggest that the technique of nose breathing for inhalation and pursed lip breathing for exhalation show most promising pressure conditions and cross‐sectional diameters for rescue breathing exercises. Also, if EILO is due to the constriction at the vocal fold level, then a quick sniff may also be a proper rescue inhalation exercise. EILO affects both the inspiratory and the expiratory phases of breathing. Conclusions A prior knowledge of the supraglottal aerodynamics and the corresponding upper airway geometry from CFD analysis has the potential to assist the clinician in choosing the most effective rescue breathing technique for optimal functional outcome of speech therapy intervention in patients with EILO and in understanding the pathophysiology of EILO on a case‐by‐case basis with future studies. Different nonmedical treatments exist for vocal nodules, but there is no consensus on the most effective methods. The aim of the present systematic review was to study the nonmedical interventions for vocal nodules in children. Materials and methods: The systematic search was performed in electronic databases, including PubMed, Scopus, Science Direct, ISI (Web of Science), Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, and Google Scholar. The search involved articles published between 2000 and 2022. The following terms were used as keywords: vocal nodule, vocal fold nodules, therapy, treatment, intervention, voice disorder, pediatric, and telepractice. Studies were selected if they 1) had examined 0-18-year-old subjects with vocal fold nodules; 2) had obviously stated the kind, process, and evaluation tools and also 3) the kind and the process of the interventions and the intervention groups; 4) had provided nonmedical interventions; 5) had been published in English and after 2000; and 6) presented the outcome data. The methodological quality of the papers was evaluated using the Physiotherapy Evidence Database scale. Results: We identified 729 articles, of which 11 met the inclusion criteria. These studies were different in the study design, participant characteristics, types of assessments, types of interventions, and follow-up periods. According to findings, nonmedical treatments of vocal nodules were successful in elimination of/decreasing the vocal nodules sizes (four studies), improving the quality of life (two studies), and improving acoustic parameters of voice (nine studies). Conclusion: The present systematic review showed the effectiveness of nonmedical treatment of vocal nodules in children, despite being challenging. Further researches are required to have higher levels of evidence, more accurate methodological quality, and long-term follow-up evaluations to draw more accurate conclusions.

Abstract Background Muscle tension dysphonia (MTD) results from inefficient or ineffective voice production and is the cause of voice and throat complaints in up to 40% of patients presenting with hoarseness. Standard treatment is voice therapy (SLT-VT) delivered by specialist speech therapists in voice disorders (SLT-V). The Complete Vocal Technique (CVT) is a structured, pedagogic method which helps healthy singers and other performers optimise their vocal function enabling them to produce any sound required. The aim of this feasibility study is to investigate whether CVT administered by a trained, non-clinical CVT practitioner (CVT-P) can be applied to patients with MTD before progressing to a pilot randomised control study of CVT voice therapy (CVT-VT) versus SLT-VT. Methods/design In this feasibility study, we use a mixed-method, single-arm, prospective cohort design. The primary aim is to demonstrate whether CVT-VT can improve the voice and vocal function in patients with MTD in a pilot study using multidimensional assessment methods. Secondary aims are to assess whether (1) a CVT-VT study is feasible to perform; (2) is acceptable to patients, the CVT-P and SLT-VTs; and (3) whether CVT-VT differs from existing SLT-VT techniques. A minimum of 10 consecutive patients with a clinical diagnosis of primary MTD (types I–III) will be recruited over a 6-month period. Up to 6 video sessions of CVT-VT will be delivered by a CVT-P using a video link. The primary outcome will be a change in pre-/post-therapy scores of a self-reported patient questionnaire (Voice Handicap Index (VHI)). Secondary outcomes include changes in throat symptoms (Vocal Tract Discomfort Scale), acoustic/electroglottographic and auditory-perceptual measures of voice. Acceptability of the CVT-VT will be assessed prospectively, concurrently and retrospectively both quantitatively and qualitatively. Differences from SLT-VT will be assessed by performing a deductive thematic analysis of CVT-P transcripts of therapy sessions. Conclusion This feasibility study will provide important data to support whether to proceed with a randomised controlled pilot study focusing on the effectiveness of the intervention compared to standard SLT-VT. Progression criteria will be based on demonstrating a positive outcome in treatment, successful delivery of the pilot study protocol, acceptability to all stakeholders and satisfactory recruitment rates. Abstract Background Reports of acoustic changes in the voice in individuals with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and the relationship of acoustic changes with age and cognitive status are still limited. Objective This study aims to determine the changes in voice analysis results in AD, as well as the effects of age and cognitive status on voice parameters. Methods The study included 47 (AD: 30; healthy: 17) women with a mean age of 76.13 years. The acoustic voice parameters mean fundamental frequency (F0), relative average perturbation (RAP), jitter percent (Jitt), shimmer percent (Shim), and noise‐to‐harmonic ratio were detected. The mini‐mental state examination (MMSE) was utilized. Results F0, Shim, Jitt, and RAP values were found to be statistically significantly higher in individuals with AD compared to healthy individuals. Benign vocal fold lesions (BVFLs) are acquired structural anomalies of the vocal folds, and these are primarily a result of vocal abuse or phonotrauma. Phonotraumatic lesions are not generally regarded as recurrent, provided that appropriate behavioral changes are made after resolution or surgical removal. Voice therapy plays a crucial role in this aspect. The aim of this article is to propose a structured pre- and post-operative voice therapy program for patients undergoing surgical intervention for BVFLs. Voice therapy post-surgery has been proven to reduce the rate of recurrence in BVFLs. Having a standard treatment protocol is a useful tool for the therapist, particularly one without extensive voice training.

The reported prevalence of voice disorders in the pediatric population varies widely between studies, ranging from 3.9% to 23%. Despite this, not all children with dysphonia are referred to a voice specialist for further evaluation. The objective of this study is to examine the relationship between dysphonia history, voice assessment, and laryngeal findings to help guide referrals of dysphonic children. A retrospective review was conducted of pediatric patients at a tertiary voice clinic between January 2014 and December 2017. Data including dates of presentation, demographics, co-morbidities, presenting symptoms, laryngeal exam findings, Consensus Auditory-Perceptual Evaluation of Voice (CAPE-V) scores, and Pediatric Voice Handicap Index (pVHI) scores were collected and analyzed. Of 475 patients initially identified, 459 met inclusion criteria and were reviewed. In all, 272 (59.3%) were male and 187 (40.7%) were female. Mean age at first presentation was 8.6 years old (range: 2-18). Males were more likely to present at a younger age than females. CAPE-V data were available for 439 patients, and pVHI data were available for 109 patients. The mean CAPE-V Overall Severity score was 38.2. The mean total pVHI score was 25.4. Males had higher CAPE-V Overall Severity (40.0 vs. 35.4), Roughness (32.2 vs. 27.6), and Strain scores (37.2 vs. 32.4) than females. Patient pVHI scores did not differ by gender. In all, 283 patients self-reported a length of symptoms prior to evaluation. Children with a longer duration of symptoms prior to evaluation had higher CAPE-V Overall Severity scores. Diagnoses of vocal fold movement impairment and benign vocal fold lesions that were not nodules were associated with higher average CAPE-V Overall Severity scores. Overall, 310 patients (67.5%) were recommended intervention for their dysphonia. These patients had higher CAPE-V Overall Severity scores than those who were solely recommended observation (42.8 vs. 28.0). Males were more likely than females to present with dysphonia and presented with more severe perceptual dysphonia scores on average. The length of symptoms and certain diagnoses correlated with higher CAPE-V Scores. Referrals to a pediatric voice clinic should be considered in patients with a dysphonia history lasting greater than 3 months and in patients with more severe symptoms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Examining the relationship between the prognostic factors and the effectiveness of voice therapy is a crucial step in developing personalized treatment strategies for individuals with voice disorders. This study recommends using the multilayer perceptron model (MLP) to comprehensively analyze the prognostic factors, with various parameters, including personal habits and acoustic parameters, that can influence the effectiveness of before-and-after voice therapy in individuals with speech disorders. Various methods, including the assessment of personal characteristics, acoustic analysis, statistical analysis, binomial logistic regression analysis, and MLP, are implemented in this experiment. Accuracies of 87.5% and 85.71% are shown for the combination of optimal input parameters for female and male voices, respectively, through the MLP model. This fact validates the selection of input parameters when building our model. Good prognostic indicators for the clinical effectiveness of voice therapy in voice disorders are jitter (post-treatment) for females and MPT (pre-treatment) for males. The results are expected to provide a foundation for modeling research utilizing artificial intelligence in voice therapy for voice disorders. In terms of follow-up studies, it will be necessary to conduct research that utilizes big data to analyze the optimal parameters for predicting the clinical effectiveness of voice disorders. Purpose: Although voice therapy (VT) has been known effective in muscle tension dysphonia (MTD), it is not obviously clear which VT approach is more effective. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of Vocal Facilitating Techniques (VFTs), Manual Circumlaryngeal Therapy (MCT), and combined VT in teachers with MTD. Methods: This study was a double-blind parallel randomized clinical trial. Thirty elementary female teachers with MTD were divided into three treatment groups including VFTs; MCT, and combined VT. In addition, vocal hygiene was presented to all groups. All participants received 10 individual 45-min sessions of VT twice a week. The effectiveness was assessed using Vocal Tract Discomfort (VTD) scale and Dysphonia Severity Index (DSI) before and after treatment and improvement measurement was calculated. The participants and data analyzer were blinded to the type of VT. Results: All groups showed significantly better results on the subscales of VTD scale and DSI score after VT (p ≤ 0.001; η2 ≥ 0.90). There was a significant difference between the three groups on the results of VTD scale and DSI score (p ≤ 0.05). The improvement measurement on the VTD severity subscale and DSI score following the combined VT was the greatest compared with other groups (η2 = 0.99 and 0.98, respectively). The significant interactive effect of treatment and time was observed on the VTD severity subscale and DSI score (p < 0.05; η2 ≥ 0.56). Conclusions: This study showed that the VFTs, MCT, and combined VT were effective for MTD teachers, and the combined VT is the most effective one. Background and Objectives: Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), a pain-alleviating and muscle-relaxing treatment used in physio-therapeutic clinical practice, has recently appeared to be just as effective in dysphonia. This review aimed at clarifying whether TENS can be an effective practice in dysphonia therapy and/or management on its own or combined with other types of interventions and, hence, whether its practice can be a useful, more widespread establishment to speech and language therapy intervention methods. Materials and Methods: A search was conducted on the PubMed database using specific terms based on the PICO search strategy. Eventually, four randomized controlled studies and four clinical trials were included. The methodological quality of the included studies was evaluated using the physiotherapy evidence-based database (PEDro) assessment tool, and this indicated high-quality research with an average score of 8.43. Results: The studies utilized various TENS devices, predominantly the Dualpex 961 device (frequency of 10 Hz, phase of 200 ms). The assessment methods varied, including auditory perception, vocal therapy, electrostimulation, audio and video perceptual assessments, and laryngeal evaluations. The clinical outcomes of TENS showed a reduction in musculoskeletal pain in various areas, while the acoustic analysis results were significant in only one study. TENS was compared to manual laryngeal therapy (LMT), placebo TENS, and vocal therapy in different studies with mixed results. Conclusions: This review supports the idea that a multidimensional approach, incorporating various therapeutic modalities (TENS, LMT, speech therapy, and vocal training) can yield positive outcomes for patients with voice disorders. Abstract Background Regarding human coronavirus, the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 pandemic, the novelty of disease, and consequently the lack of studies, the etiology of dysphonia in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 is still unknown and needs to be investigated. The purpose of the current study is to investigate the effect of a new manual therapy technique, cricothyroid visor maneuver, on muscle tension dysphonia symptoms for a patient who had experienced dysphonia symptoms due to the coronavirus disease 2019 infection. Case presentation A 55-year-old retired Iranian teacher who was diagnosed with muscle tension dysphonia by an otolaryngologist participated in this study. Fifty days before being referred to an otolaryngologist, he was diagnosed with coronavirus disease 2019 on the basis of the results of a standard laboratory test, namely real-time polymerase chain reaction. Treatment was provided in ten sessions. Pre- and post-treatment audio recordings of sustained vowels, selected sentences, and connected speech samples were submitted for auditory perceptual and acoustic analysis to assess the effects of the treatment program. Also, videolaryngostroboscopy voice quality perceptions by the patient, both before and after therapy, were assessed. The reduction in all features of the Consensus Auditory-Perceptual Evaluation of Voice was observed. The results of acoustic assessment showed that jitter (35.13%) and shimmer (20.48%) decreased; moreover, the harmonics-to-noise ratio (1.17%), cepstral peak prominence smoothed (28.53%) and maximum phonation time (15.5%) increased after treatment sessions. The scores of four parameters of Stroboscopy Examination Rating Form (SERF) form changed after cricothyroid visor maneuver therapy. Also, the visual analog scales score at the pre-treatment assessment was 40, and increased to 90 at the post-treatment assessment. Conclusions The effectiveness of cricothyroid visor maneuver therapy on dysphonia associated with coronavirus disease 2019 was investigated in the current study. This case study has highlighted chronic dysphonia after coronavirus disease 2019 infection, and suggests that the cricothyroid visor maneuver therapy approach may have positive outcomes for patients with muscle tension dysphonia with this background.

Objectives/Hypothesis: To determine if (1) the likelihood of presenting with phonotraumatic lesions differs by singing genre in treatment‐seeking singers and (2) if the distribution of phonotraumatic lesion types differs by singing genre. Study Type: Retrospective. Methods: Records of singers who presented with a voice complaint over the course of 2.5 years (June 2017–December 2019) were reviewed to determine the proportion of those with phonotraumatic lesions as a function of genre (Study 1). Separately, the lesion types and genres of singers diagnosed with phonotraumatic lesions over a 9‐year period (July 2011–March 2020) were determined (Study 2). Results: In Study 1, 191 of 712 (26.8%) dysphonic singers were diagnosed with phonotraumatic lesions. Country/folk, gospel/jazz, and musical theater singers were more likely to present with phonotraumatic lesions. In Study 2, in 443 singers with phonotraumatic lesions, polyps and pseudocysts, but not nodules, were found to be distributed unequally across genres (χ2p = 0.006, p < 0.0001, p = 0.064, respectively). Praise/worship singers had significantly higher proportions of polyps compared to choral singers (OR 4.8 [95% CI 1.9–12.5]) or compared to musical theater singers (OR 7.2 [95% CI 2.5–20.8]). Opera singers had significantly higher proportions of pseudocysts than choral singers (OR 3.1 [95% CI 1.5–6.1]) or musical theater singers (OR 3.7 [95% CI 1.8–7.6]). Conclusions: The higher incidence of polyps in praise/worship singers likely reflects the more emphatic nature of singing and the tendency for acute injury. The main causes of voice disorders in children with adverse vocal behavior include benign lesions of the vocal folds caused by voice abuse or misuses, such as vocal fold nodules, vocal fold polyps, and laryngitis. Long-term voice disorders can affect the physical and mental health of children. Reviewing the literature of the last two decades on "Vocal Fold Nodules," "Vocal Fold Polyp," "Voice disorder," "Voice Abuse," "Voice Misuse," "Pediatrics," and "Children" with the appropriate Boolean operators. Conclusion: A total of 315 results were returned on an initial PubMed search. All articles from 2000 to 2022 written in English or Chinese were screened. Duplicate articles, those relating to adults only or concerned with the malignant lesion of the vocal cord, were excluded, resulting in 196 articles of interest. Relevant references and books have also been consulted, and we provide a review of the pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment of these maladaptive vocal behavioral voice disorders. What is Known: • Hoarseness is the most common voice symptom in children, and there are various causes of hoarseness in children. However, there is a lack of reviews on voice disorders caused by adverse vocal habits in children. • Voice training is a conservative treatment method for children with voice disorders , and it is important to clarify the factors that influence the effectiveness of voice training for children. Background: Muscle tension dysphonia (MTD) results from inefficient or ineffective voice production and is the cause of voice and throat complaints in up to 40% of patients presenting with hoarseness. Standard treatment is voice therapy (SLT-VT) delivered by specialist speech therapists in voice disorders (SLT-V). The Complete Vocal Technique (CVT) is a structured, pedagogic method which helps healthy singers and other performers optimise their vocal function enabling them to produce any sound required. The aim of this feasibility study is to investigate whether CVT administered by a trained, non-clinical CVT practitioner (CVT-P) can be applied to patients with MTD before progressing to a pilot randomised control study of CVT voice therapy (CVT-VT) versus SLT-VT. Methods/design: In this feasibility study, we use a mixed-method, single-arm, prospective cohort design. The primary aim is to demonstrate whether CVT-VT can improve the voice and vocal function in patients with MTD in a pilot study using multidimensional assessment methods. Secondary aims are to assess whether (1) a CVT-VT study is feasible to perform; (2) is acceptable to patients, the CVT-P and SLT-VTs; and (3) whether CVT-VT differs from existing SLT-VT techniques. A minimum of 10 consecutive patients with a clinical diagnosis of primary MTD (types I–III) will be recruited over a 6-month period. Up to 6 video sessions of CVT-VT will be delivered by a CVT-P using a video link. The primary outcome will be a change in pre-/post-therapy scores of a self-reported patient questionnaire (Voice Handicap Index (VHI)). Secondary outcomes include changes in throat symptoms (Vocal Tract Discomfort Scale), acoustic/electroglottographic and auditory-perceptual measures of voice. Acceptability of the CVT-VT will be assessed prospectively, concurrently and retrospectively both quantitatively and qualitatively. Differences from SLT-VT will be assessed by performing a deductive thematic analysis of CVT-P transcripts of therapy sessions. Conclusion: This feasibility study will provide important data to support whether to proceed with a randomised controlled pilot study focusing on the effectiveness of the intervention compared to standard SLT-VT. Progression criteria will be based on demonstrating a positive outcome in treatment, successful delivery of the pilot study protocol, acceptability to all stakeholders and satisfactory recruitment rates. Background: Vocal fold polyps (VFP) are a common cause of voice disorders and laryngeal discomfort. They are usually treated by behavioral voice therapy (VT) or phonosurgery, or a combination (CT) of both. However, the superiority of either of these treatments has not been clearly established. Methods: Three databases were searched from inception to October 2022 and a manual search was performed. All clinical trials of VFP treatment were included that reported at least auditory–perceptual judgment, aerodynamics, acoustics, and the patient-perceived handicap. Results: We identified 31 eligible studies (VT: n = 47–194; phonosurgery: n = 404–1039; CT: n = 237–350). All treatment approaches were highly effective, with large effect sizes (d > 0.8) and significant improvements in almost all voice parameters (p-values < 0.05). Phonosurgery reduced roughness and NHR, and the emotional and functional subscales of the VHI-30 were the most compared to behavioral voice therapy and combined treatment (p-values < 0.001). Combined treatment improved hoarseness, jitter, shimmer, MPT, and the physical subscale of the VHI-30 more than phonosurgery and behavioral voice therapy (p-values < 0.001). Conclusions: All three treatment approaches were effective in eliminating vocal fold polyps or their negative sequelae, with phonosurgery and combined treatment providing the greatest improvement. The most common etiologies of dysphonia in the pediatric population are vocal fold nodules and muscle tension dysphonia. Vocal therapy is the first line treatment for these disorders in children. Despite this, not all children undergo therapy. The goal of this study is to examine how factors such as patient demographics and parental perceptions differ between children that choose to undergo or not to undergo voice therapy. A retrospective review was conducted of all pediatric patients seen at a tertiary voice clinic between January 2014 and December 2017. Patients were included if diagnosed with vocal fold nodules and/or muscle tension dysphonia. Patients were divided into groups of children that received voice therapy at our institution and those that did not. Data include demographics, Consensus Auditory-Perceptual Evaluation of Voice (CAPE-V) scores and pediatric Voice Handicap Index (pVHI) scores. Distance to therapy site was approximated using patient zip codes. Three hundred and forty-six children were included, 224 (65%) boys and 122 (35%) girls. In the 2 years following initial diagnosis, 74 (21%) children participated in voice therapy at our institution. Patients who underwent voice therapy were older than those who did not (mean age: 9.1 [SD 3.5] vs 7.6 [SD 3.8] years; P = 0.004). Patients who received voice therapy were more likely to live closer to the therapy site (mean distance: 15.5 [SD 13.0] vs 24.3 [SD 23.9] miles; P < 0.001). Likelihood of receiving voice therapy did not differ by gender or health insurance status (private vs public). Patients who underwent voice therapy had significantly greater CAPE-V Overall Severity scores than those who did not (mean score: 44.6 [SD 19.4] vs 37.4 [SD 18.0]; P = 0.003). Higher CAPE-V Strain scores were associated with increased likelihood of voice therapy. pVHI scores did not differ between the two groups. Older age, shorter distance to therapy site, and increased CAPE-V Overall Severity and Strain scores were associated with higher likelihood of receiving voice therapy. Gender, insurance status, and pVHI scores did not affect likelihood of receiving voice therapy. The elderly population is increasing globally. In Turkey, the population aged 65+ is predicted to grow to more than 15% of the whole population by 2050. Just like the rest of the body, the voice also changes with age. Voice changes throughout life have been reported in up to 52.4% of aged individuals and may have a negative impact on their quality of life. Voice is affected by various factors, including age, disease, hormones, medications, and physiological, psychological, and social conditions. A multidisciplinary approach is therefore needed to achieve the best voice outcomes. In this review, we summarize the mechanisms involved in voice changes in the elderly together with the applicable diagnostic and treatment methods.
