- Abstract
Precarious manhood beliefs portray manhood, relative to womanhood, as a social status that is hard to earn, easy to lose, and proven via public action. Here, we present cross-cultural data on a brief measure of precarious manhood beliefs (the Precarious Manhood Beliefs scale [PMB]) that covaries meaningfully with other cross-culturally validated gender ideologies and with country-level indices of gender equality and human development. Using data from university samples in 62 countries across 13 world regions (N = 33,417), we demonstrate: (1) the psychometric isomorphism of the PMB (i.e., its comparability in meaning and statistical properties across the individual and country levels); (2) the PMB’s distinctness from, and associations with, ambivalent sexism and ambivalence toward men; and (3) associations of the PMB with nation-level gender equality and human development. Findings are discussed in terms of their statistical and theoretical implications for understanding widely-held beliefs about the precariousness of the male gender role.

- Abstract
BACKGROUND: Cell-free DNA (cfDNA) non-invasive prenatal screening for trisomy (T) 21, 18, and 13 has been rapidly adopted into clinical practice. However, prior studies are limited by lack of follow up genetic testing to confirm outcomes and accurately assess test performance, particularly in women at low-risk for aneuploidy. OBJECTIVE: To compare the performance of cfDNA screening for T21, T18 and T13 between women at low and high-risk for aneuploidy in a large, prospective cohort with genetic confirmation of results. STUDY DESIGN: A multicenter prospective observational study at 21 centers in 6 countries. Women who had SNP-based cfDNA screening for T21, T18 and T13 were enrolled. Genetic confirmation was obtained from prenatal or newborn DNA samples. Test performance and test failure (no-call) rates were assessed for the cohort and women with low and high prior risk for aneuploidy were compared. An updated cfDNA algorithm, blinded to pregnancy outcome, was also assessed. RESULTS: 20,194 were enrolled at median gestational age of 12.6 weeks (IQR:11.6, 13.9). Genetic outcomes were confirmed in 17,851 (88.4%): 13,043 (73.1%) low-risk and 4,808 (26.9%) high-risk for aneuploidy. Overall, 133 trisomies were diagnosed (100 T21; 18 T18; 15 T13). cfDNA screen positive rate was lower in low- vs. high-risk (0.27% vs. 2.2%, p

- Abstract
Social role theory posits that binary gender gaps in agency and communion should be larger in less egalitarian countries, reflecting these countries’ more pronounced sex-based power divisions. Conversely, evolutionary and self-construal theorists suggest that gender gaps in agency and communion should be larger in more egalitarian countries, reflecting the greater autonomy support and flexible self-construction processes present in these countries. Using data from 62 countries (N = 28,640), we examine binary gender gaps in agentic and communal self-views as a function of country-level objective gender equality (the Global Gender Gap Index) and subjective distributions of social power (the Power Distance Index). Findings show that in more egalitarian countries, gender gaps in agency are smaller and gender gaps in communality are larger. These patterns are driven primarily by cross-country differences in men’s self-views and by the Power Distance Index (PDI) more robustly than the Global Gender Gap Index (GGGI). We consider possible causes and implications of these findings.

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the factors associated with procrastination and anxiety, both of which can impact a student’s college experience significantly. The research question we examined was whether perceived parenting styles, locus of control and self-efficacy could predict anxiety and procrastination in our sample of college students. The participants were college students in India (N = 156), who responded to an online survey with self-report questionnaires measuring the variables of interest. The results found that procrastination was significantly correlated with general (r = -0.597) and social self-efficacy (r = -0.241), and locus of control (r = 0.276), while anxiety was significantly correlated with these variables (r = -0.420, r = -0.248, r = 0.294, respectively) and the acceptance-involvement dimension of parenting (r = -0.227). A multivariate regression was conducted with procrastination and anxiety as outcome variables, locus of control, social and general self-efficacy, parental acceptance-involvement, parental strictness-supervision, and helicopter parenting included as covariates and gender, history of child sexual abuse, history of parental neglect, and ongoing treatment for a mental health concern included as factors. These predictors significantly contributed to the variance in procrastination (R2 = 0.3826) and anxiety (R2 = 0.4009). General self-efficacy emerged as the only significant predictor ( = -0.612) of procrastination in the model described, while gender ( = -0.117), ongoing treatment for a mental health concern ( = 0.147) and general self-efficacy ( = -0.451) emerged as significant predictors of anxiety. These results suggest that general self-efficacy can be a variable of further investigation for interventions targeted towards improving procrastination and anxiety among college students.

© The Author(s) 2021.

- Abstract
Men sometimes withdraw support for gender equality movements when their higher gender status is threatened. Here, we expand the focus of this phenomenon by examining it cross-culturally, to test if both individual- and country-level variables predict men's collective action intentions to support gender equality. We tested a model in which men's zero-sum beliefs about gender predict reduced collective action intentions via an increase in hostile sexism. Because country-level gender equality may threaten men's higher gender status, we also examined whether the path from zero-sum beliefs to collective action intentions was stronger in countries higher in gender equality. Multilevel modeling on 6,734 men from 42 countries supported the individual-level mediation model, but found no evidence of moderation by country-level gender equality. Both country-level gender equality and individual-level zero-sum thinking independently predicted reductions in men's willingness to act collectively for gender equality. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

- Abstract
With data from 33 nations, we illustrate the differences between cultures that are tight (have many strong norms and a low tolerance of deviant behavior) versus loose (have weak social norms and a high tolerance of deviant behavior). Tightness-looseness is part of a complex, loosely integrated multilevel system that comprises distal ecological and historical threats (e.g., high population density, resource scarcity, a history of territorial conflict, and disease and environmental threats), broad versus narrow socialization in societal institutions (e.g., autocracy, media regulations), the strength of everyday recurring situations, and micro-level psychological affordances (e.g., prevention self-guides, high regulatory strength, need for structure). This research advances knowledge that can foster cross-cultural understanding in a world of increasing global interdependence and has implications for modeling cultural change.

- Abstract
Leung and colleagues have revealed a five-dimensional structure of social axioms across individuals from five cultural groups. The present research was designed to reveal the culture level factor structure of social axioms and its correlates across 41 nations. An ecological factor analysis on the 60 items of the Social Axioms Survey extracted two factors: Dynamic Externality correlates with value measures tapping collectivism, hierarchy, and conservatism and with national indices indicative of lower social development. Societal Cynicism is less strongly and broadly correlated with previous values measures or other national indices and seems to define a novel cultural syndrome. Its national correlates suggest that it taps the cognitive component of a cultural constellation labeled maleficence, a cultural syndrome associated with a general mistrust of social systems and other people. Discussion focused on the meaning of these national level factors of beliefs and on their relationships with individual level factors of belief derived from the same data set.

Objective: To check whether there is a difference in indications for delivery, antepartum and neonatal characteristics in intermittent absent end diastolic velocity (iAEDV) compared to persistent absent or reversed end diastolic velocity (pA/REDV). Methods: A retrospective study of 109 patients with iAEDV or pA/REDV from 19 to 39 weeks. The delivery indication was classified as maternal or fetal. The primary antepartum and maternal characteristics were age, parity, AMA, chronic hypertension, PEC, thrombophilia, lupus, diabetes, smoker, placenta previa, gestational age (GA) at diagnosis of IUGR and/or SGA, GA at diagnosis of elevated S/D, iAEDV or pA/REDV, GA at delivery, minimal/absent variability day of delivery, BPP ≤ 6 prior to delivery. The primary neonatal outcomes were birth weight, arterial cord pH, neonatal demise, necrotizing enterocolitis, intraventricular hemorrhage and length of stay in the NICU. Results: Fetuses with iAEDV were diagnosed with an elevated S/D at a later GA (29.6 vs. 27.5 weeks, p < 0.03), delivered at a later GA (31.6 vs. 29.7 weeks, p < 0.01), had a higher birth weight (1336.6 vs. 933 g, p < 0.0004), were more likely to be delivered for maternal indications (42.9% vs. 20.27%, p < 0.01), had a higher cord arterial pH (7.28 vs. 7.21, p < 0.002) and were less likely to have an arterial pH at birth <7.2 (0% vs. 34.1%, p < 0.002). Conclusions: Although fetuses with iAEDV have an improved antenatal course as compared with pA/REDV, indications for delivery are more likely to be maternal and adverse outcome is common. We consider coupled models of flow and energy with phase change in thawing soils in permafrost at the pore- and Darcy scales. We develop the underlying models from first principles and define robust and conservative discretization algorithms based on cell-centered finite volume discretization on Cartesian grids and implicit time stepping for individual models. To couple the models we consider sequential approaches as well as time-lagging of some of the nonlinear properties. We also derive practical new surrogate models to obtain Darcy scale data from the pore-scale simulations. Finally, we study the sensitivity of models to the data in realistic scenarios. In particular we find that for the dynamics at the time scale of days, the nonlinear flow parameters have most significant impact on pressure, while temperature is less sensitive to data. CELL-free DNA ,PRENATAL diagnosis - Abstract
Seven cases of 45,X were confirmed in the cohort including 4 with mosaicism, for a prevalence of 1:2614. cfDNA identified 6/7 cases (sensitivity=85.7%). cfDNA results reported high risk for 45,X in 24 cases; 6 of these were confirmed (PPV=25.0%). CfDNA screening for 45,X can be complicated by mosaicism and the diagnosis may be delayed due to variable and late onset of manifestations. We aimed to define the prevalence and screening performance for 45,X using single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) - based cfDNA screening for aneuploidy and 22q11.2DS, in a large prospective registry study with genetic confirmation (SMART registry study). Because diagnostic test results are expected to affect perinatal management, HR22q pregnancies were stratified by use of invasive testing. The goal of the study was to determine whether results of SNP-based cfDNA screening for 22q11.2DS affects prenatal or neonatal management. HR22q pregnancies with normal prenatal diagnosis results had significantly fewer Caesarean sections and had fewer postnatal evaluations. [Extracted from the article]
