The modularity of a product architecture with standard, variant, and optional modules can be measured by the characteristics of commonality and combinability. Positive and negative effects of a more communal or more combinable structure are summarized and visualized in an impact model. However, due to the megatrend of personalization, the solution space of a modular product architecture needs to be extended to include personalizable modules. What remains unclear till now is how personalization impacts the different life phases. Therefore, this article derives an impact model considering product personalization. First, the modularity property of personalizability is derived, in order to then specifically investigate the effects occurring in the different life phases. Therefore, a literature review is conducted. New effects are found, and the existing effects of commonality and combinability are examined for their validity for personalizability. The findings are then combined with the known effects of commonality and combinability to create a holistic impact model of modular product families. This new model takes personalizable modules into account and can support companies in defining the goals and focus of a modularization project.

(1,2) In this theoretical study, we apply MesoFON, a field-calibrated individual-based model of mangrove forest dynamics, and its Lotka–Volterra interpretations to address two questions: (a) Do the dynamics of two identical red mangrove species that compete for light resources and avoid inter-specific competition by lateral crown displacement follow the predictions of classical competition theory or resource competition theory? (b) Which mechanisms drive the dynamics in the presence of inter-specific crown plasticity when local competition is combined with global or with localized seed dispersal? (3) In qualitative support of classical competition theory, the two species can stably coexist within MesoFON. However, the total standing stock at equilibrium matched the carrying capacity of the single species. Therefore, a “non-overyielding” Lotka–Volterra model rather than the classic one approximated best the observed behavior. Mechanistically, inter-specific crown plasticity moved heterospecific trees apart and pushed conspecifics together. Despite local competition, the community exhibited mean-field dynamics with global dispersal. In comparison, localized dispersal slowed down the dynamics by diminishing the strength of intra-/inter-specific competition and their difference due to a restriction in the competitive race to the mean-field that prevails between conspecific clusters. This study presents mesoFON, an individual-based mangrove forest dynamics model that advances beyond current models by describing crown plasticity of mangrove trees. The crown plasticity routines take advantage of the fields-of-neighborhood (FON) approach and account for the trunk bending and the differential side branch growth mechanism. Competition for above-/below-ground resources is dealt with separately in this model. Offspring production depends on tree growth and rises with tree ontogeny. An extensive sensitivity analysis revealed that mesoFON resembles the behavior of known mangrove forest dynamics and is ready for application. In this study we exposed two plant functional types (PFTs) of the red mangrove (Rhizophora mangle L.) either in monoculture or as a community to two disturbance regimes, namely (1) without disturbances and (2) with hurricane impacts returning every 5 years. While one functional type possesses plastic crowns, the other PFT has rigid crowns. For the first time, long-term interaction of lateral crown displacement and disturbance was examined using a comprehensive comparative analysis including point patterns and canopy coverage. In the monoculture experiments disturbance strongly promoted the beneficial effects of crown plasticity. Without disturbance crown movements merely increased stand-based stem volume by 6.7% despite considerable displacement distances. We attribute this to the overall high competitive strength that constrained the effects of plasticity in the dense stands. Yet, in disturbed stands the plastic behavior raised stem volume and tree density by 12.5% and 7.5%, respectively, as a result of substantially reduced local competition (by 20.1%). In this treatment crown shifts are particularly advantageous because of their contribution to gap closure. Individuals within natural populations are highly diverse. They can vary regarding their physiological states and thus contribute differently to the performance of the whole community [1]. Hence, the characterization of microbial physiology on the single cell level is crucial for optimization and understanding of biotechnological processes. Here a protocol is presented for detecting and monitoring the functional heterogeneity in a given yeast population, on both the cellular and molecular levels, using flow cytometry and microarray analysis (first published in Nature Protocols by Achilles et al. [2]). The protocol includes staining of living S. cerevisiae cells with three different fluorescent dyes, flow cytometric analysis, sorting of live cells and stabilization of their status, the subsequent isolation of RNA from small amounts of separated cells, and finally the quantification and integrity check of this RNA. Owing to the high quality and quantity of the isolated RNA from sorted cells, gene expression analysis can be performed by using microarrays, for example.

Despite their important ecosystem benefits for terrestrial and marine flora and fauna and the human livelihood mangrove forests suffer a high loss rate mainly due to human activity. Aside from these impacts, natural forest disturbances exist more commonly in mangroves compared to other forests as a direct consequence of their exposed coastal location. Within this thesis I investigate the influence of natural disturbance regimes on the mangrove forest dynamics focusing in particular on the ecological role of disturbances, disturbance patterns, forest structure, succession behavior and long-term vulnerability evaluation. The study areas were set in the Indian River Lagoon in Florida (USA) and in Can Gio an UNESCO Biosphere Reserve (Vietnam). In addition, theoretical simulation studies were carried out to complement the field studies. Thereby, in our study at the Indian River Lagoon site I investigated the ecosystem response to hurricane events of an artificially impounded mangrove forest. In Can Gio, the suitability of lightning strike – caused gaps for setting a homogenous plantation into more natural-like state according to species composition and forest structure was analyzed. Finally, a theoretical simulation study was carried out to compare lightning strike and hurricane events regarding their homogenization and heterogenization effects on the spatio-temporal forest structure. The findings of the field study in the Indian River Lagoon indicate that hurricane events had a severe impact on forest areas in higher successional stages by creating open patches, whereas areas in lower successional stages remained largely undisturbed. Furthermore, the impoundment determines the species selection of the post-hurricane succession by favoring flooding-tolerant species. However, regeneration was found to be impaired by the artificially high inundation regime at some disturbed patches. This study was designed to determine the toxic effects of nickel sulfate on the biochemical and elemental profile of liver in protein deficient rats. Nickel sulfate in the dose of 800mg/l in drinking water was administrated to Sprauge Dawley (S.D) normal control as well as protein deficient rats for a total duration of eight weeks. The effects of nickel treatment and protein deficiency when given separately and in combination were studied on rat liver marker enzymes like Alkaline phosphatase (ALP),Glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase (GOT), Glutamate pyruvate transaminase (GPT) and also on the status of essential elements in rat liver. Protein deficient, Ni treated as well as combined protein deficient and nickel treated rats showed significant reductions in the body weight and hepatic protein contents as compared to normal control rats. Hepatic alkaline phosphatase activity and alanine aminotransferase showed a significant elevation in rats subjected to protein deficiency, nickel treatment and combined protein deficiency and nickel treatment. As regards to hepatic levels of aspartate aminotransferase a significant elevation was observed in protein deficient and nickel treated protein deficient animals. Nickel administration to normal and protein deficient rats has resulted in a significant increase in concentrations of nickel, phosphorus and sulfur in liver tissue. The concentration of zinc and copper in liver tissue decreased significantly in protein deficient, nickel treated and nickel treated protein deficient animals. Tissue iron concentrations were found to be decreased in protein deficient animals, but the concentrations of iron got elevated significantly in nickel treated and nickel treated protein deficient animals. This study was designed to determine the protective effects of zinc on the hepatotoxicity induced by nickel in rats. Female Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats received either nickel sulfate alone in the dose of 800 mg/L nickel in drinking water, zinc sulfate alone in the dose of 227 mg/L zinc in drinking water, and nickel plus zinc or drinking water alone for a total duration of 8 wk. The effects of different treatments were studied on activities of rat liver marker enzymes like alkaline phosphatase (ALP), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and aspartate aminotransferases (AST) and on the status of essential elements in rat liver. The study revealed a significant increase in the activities of enzymes ALP and ALT in rats subjected to nickel treatment. Interestingly, zinc supplementation to rats treated with nickel brought back the raised activities of these enzymes to within normal limits. Further, the levels of elements in liver that include zinc, copper, selenium, and potassium were found to be significantly suppressed following nickel treatment, whereas the levels of iron and sulfur were elevated. However, zinc treatment alone did not cause any appreciable change in the concentration of these elements. To the contrary, when zinc was given to nickel-treated rats, the concentrations of zinc, copper, potassium, and phosphorus were not significantly different from that of normal controls, whereas the levels of iron, selenium, and sulfur were improved in comparison to nickel-treated rats but were not within the normal limits. The present study concludes that zinc has the ability to maintain the levels of hepatic elements and has bearing in regulating the liver functions by maintaining the activities of marker enzymes in conditions of nickel toxicity.
