Hypothetical axions provide a compelling explanation for dark matter and could be emitted from the hot solar interior. The CERN Axion Solar Telescope has been searching for solar axions via their back conversion to x-ray photons in a 9-T 10-m long magnet directed toward the Sun. We report on an extended run with the International Axion Observatory pathfinder detector, doubling the previous exposure time. The detector was operated with a xenon-based gas mixture for part of the new run, providing technical insights for future configurations. No counts were detected in the 95% signal-encircling region during the new run, while 0.75 were expected. The new data improve the axion-photon coupling limit to 5.8×10^{-11}  GeV^{-1} at 95% CL (for m_{a}≲0.02  eV), the most restrictive experimental limit to date.

Aims: The optimal strategy to identify transthyretin-type cardiac amyloidosis (ATTR-CA) in patients with aortic stenosis (AS) is still unclear. This study aimed to investigate if targeted screening for ATTR-CA in patients with severe AS and amyloid red flags is associated with higher detection rates., Methods: The study prospectively enrolled patients ≥65 years with severe AS. Patients who fulfilled ≥1 major (carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), ruptured biceps tendon, spinal stenosis, N-terminal pro B-type natriuretic peptide ≥1000 pg/mL, cardiac troponin >99th percentile) or ≥2 minor criteria (diastolic dysfunction ≥2 grade/lateral e' <10 cm/s, atrial fibrillation, atrioventricular conduction disease/pacemaker) received bone scintigraphy and biochemical analysis for light chain amyloidosis. Hypertensive patients (>140/90 mmHg) and those with interventricular septal thickness (IVSd) ≤13 mm were excluded., Results: Overall, 264 patients were screened, of whom 85 were included in the analysis. Tracer uptake Perugini grade ≥1 was detected in nine patients (11%). An endomyocardial biopsy was additionally performed in four of nine patients, yielding a prevalence of 7% (n = 6). All patients with dual AS-ATTR were male. Syncope was more commonly reported in AS-ATTR patients (50% vs. 6%, p = 0.010), who also tended to have more severe hypertrophy (IVSd of 18 vs. 16 mm, p = 0.075). Pericardial effusion and CTS were more common in patients with dual pathology (67% vs. 8%, p < 0.001, and 83% vs. 24%, p = 0.003, respectively)., Conclusion: Targeted screening for ATTR-CA in patients with AS and amyloid red flags does not yield higher detection rates than those reported previously in all comers with AS.

(1) Background: The transcoronary ablation of septal hypertrophy (TASH) is an established therapy for hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOCM). Previous studies on this topic are characterised by a consistent male predominance and show a worse prognosis in females. (2) Methods: This study is a retrospective analysis of all TASH procedures conducted between 2006 and 2021 at a tertiary academic centre. A solution of 75 µm microspheres (Embozene ® , Boston Scientific, Marlborough, MA, USA) was used as an embolising agent. The outcomes of interest were left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) gradient reduction and symptom improvement among males vs. that among females. Secondarily, we analysed the sex-related differences in procedural safety outcomes and mortality. (3) Results: The study population consisted of 76 patients, with a median age of 61 years. Females comprised 57% of the cohort. We observed no sex-related differences in the baseline LVOT gradients at rest or under provocation ( p = 0.560 and p = 0.208, respectively). Females were significantly older at the time of the procedure ( p < 0.001), had lower tricuspid annular systolic excursion (TAPSE) ( p = 0.009), presented a worse clinical status according to the NYHA functional classification (for NYHA ≥ 3, p < 0.001), and were more often on diuretics ( p < 0.001). We did not observe sex-related differences in absolute gradient reduction at rest ( p = 0.147) and under provocation ( p = 0.709). There was a reduction in the NYHA class by a median value of 1 ( p = 0.636) at follow-up for both sexes. Postprocedural access site complications were documented in four cases (two of which concerned females), and complete atrioventricular block was noted in five patients (three of which concerned females). The 10-year survival rates were comparable between the sexes (85% in females and 88% in males). The female sex was not associated with enhanced mortality according to multivariate analysis after adjusting for the confounding variables (HR 0.94; 95% CI 0.376-2.350; p = 0.895), but we observed age-related differences in long-term mortality (HR 1.035; 95% CI 1.007-1.063; p = 0.015). (4) Conclusions: TASH is safe and effective in both sexes, irrespective of their clinical differences. Women present at an advanced age and with more severe symptoms. An advanced age at the time of the intervention is an independent predictor of mortality.

Advancements in computer-controlled polishing, metrology, and replication have led to an x-ray mirror fabrication process that is capable of producing high-resolution Wolter microscopes. We present the fabrication and test of a nickel-cobalt replicated full-shell x-ray mirror that was electroformed from a finely figured and polished mandrel. This mandrel was designed for an 8-m source-to-detector-distance microscope, with 10× magnification, and was optimized to reduce shell distortions that occur within 20 mm of the shell ends. This, in combination with an improved replication tooling design and refined bath parameters informed by a detailed COMSOL Multiphysics ® model, has led to reductions in replication errors in the mirrors. Mandrel surface fabrication was improved by implementing a computer-controlled polishing process that corrected the low-frequency mandrel figure error and achieved <2.0 nm RMS convergence error. X-ray tests performed on a pair of mirror shells replicated from the mandrel have demonstrated <10 μm full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) spatial resolution. Here, we discuss the development process, highlight results from metrology and x-ray testing, and define a path for achieving a program goal of 5 μm FWHM resolution.

The CAST-CAPP axion haloscope, operating at CERN inside the CAST dipole magnet, has searched for axions in the 19.74 μeV to 22.47 μeV mass range. The detection concept follows the Sikivie haloscope principle, where Dark Matter axions convert into photons within a resonator immersed in a magnetic field. The CAST-CAPP resonator is an array of four individual rectangular cavities inserted in a strong dipole magnet, phase-matched to maximize the detection sensitivity. Here we report on the data acquired for 4124 h from 2019 to 2021. Each cavity is equipped with a fast frequency tuning mechanism of 10 MHz/ min between 4.774 GHz and 5.434 GHz. In the present work, we exclude axion-photon couplings for virialized galactic axions down to g aγγ  = 8 × 10 -14 GeV -1 at the 90% confidence level. A finite axion-nucleon coupling, nearly unavoidable for QCD axions, leads to the production of axions via the thermal excitation and subsequent de-excitation of 57 Fe isotopes in the sun. We revise the solar bound on this flux adopting the up to date emission rate, and investigate the sensitivity of the proposed International Axion Observatory IAXO and its intermediate stage BabyIAXO to detect these axions. We compare different realistic experimental options and discuss the model dependence of the signal. Already BabyIAXO has sensitivity far beyond previous solar axion searches via the nucleon coupling and IAXO can improve on this by more than an order of magnitude., (© The Author(s) 2022.)

The high-mobility-group (HMG)-domain protein Sox9 is one of few transcription factors implicated in gliogenesis in the vertebrate central nervous system. To further study the role of Sox9 in early spinal cord development, we generated a mouse that allows expression of Sox9 in a temporally and spatially controlled manner. Using this mouse, we show that premature Sox9 expression in neural precursor cells disrupted the neuroepithelium of the ventricular zone. Sox9 also compromised development and survival of neuronal precursors and neurons. Additionally, we observed in these mice substantial increases in oligodendroglial and astroglial cells. Reversing the normal order of appearance of essential transcriptional regulators during oligodendrogenesis, Sox10 preceded Olig2. Our study reinforces the notion that Sox9 has a strong gliogenic activity. It also argues that Sox9 expression has to be tightly controlled to prevent negative effects on early spinal cord structure and neuronal development., (© 2019 The Authors. The need for a time-resolved monochromatic x-ray imaging diagnostic at photon energies >15 keV has motivated the development of a Wolter optic to study x-ray sources on the Z-machine at Sandia National Laboratories. The work is performed in both the LLNL's x-ray calibration facility and SNL's micro-focus x-ray lab. Characterizations and calibrations include alignment, measurement of throughput within the field of view (FOV), the point-spread function within the FOV both in and out of focus, and bandpass in the FOV. These results are compared with ray tracing models, showing reasonable agreement.

Recent breakthroughs in the fabrication of small-radii Wolter optics for astrophysics allow high energy density facilities to consider such optics as novel x-ray diagnostics at photon energies of 15-50 keV. Recently, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Sandia National Laboratories (SNL), the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, and the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center jointly developed and fabricated the first custom Wolter microscope for implementation in SNL's Z machine with optimized sensitivity at 17.5 keV. To achieve spatial resolution of order 100-200 microns over a field of view of 5 × 5 × 5 mm 3 with high throughput and narrow energy bandpass, the geometry of the optic and its multilayer required careful design and optimization. While the geometry mainly influences resolution and the field of view of the diagnostic, the mirror coating determines the spectral response and throughput. Here we outline the details of the design and fabrication process for the first multilayer-coated Wolter I optic for SNL's Z machine (Z Wolter), including its W/Si multilayer, and present results of raytrace simulations completed to predict and verify the performance of the optic.

A new Wolter x-ray imager has been developed for the Z machine to study the emission of warm (>15 keV) x-ray sources. A Wolter optic has been adapted from observational astronomy and medical imaging, which uses curved x-ray mirrors to form a 2D image of a source with 5 × 5 × 5 mm 3 field-of-view and measured 60-300- μ m resolution on-axis. The mirrors consist of a multilayer that create a narrow bandpass around the Mo K α lines at 17.5 keV. We provide an overview of the instrument design and measured imaging performance. In addition, we present the first data from the instrument of a Mo wire array z-pinch on the Z machine, demonstrating improvements in spatial resolution and a 350-4100× increase in the signal over previous pinhole imaging techniques.

A facility to calibrate x-ray imaging optics was built at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory to support high energy density (HED) and inertial confinement fusion (ICF) diagnostics such as those at the National Ignition Facility and the Sandia Z-Machine. Calibration of the spectral reflectivity and resolution of these x-ray diagnostics enable absolute determination of the x-ray flux and wavelengths generated in the HED and ICF experiments. Measurement of the optic point spread function is used to determine spatial resolution of the optic. This facility was constructed to measure (1) the x-ray reflectivity to ±5% over a spectral range from 5 to 60 keV; (2) point spread functions with a resolution of 50 μ m (currently) and 13 μ m (future) in the image plane; and (3) optic distance relative to the x-ray source and detector to within ±100 μ m in each dimension. This article describes the capabilities of the calibration facility, concept of operations, and initial data from selected x-ray optics.

The CERN Axion Solar Telescope has finished its search for solar axions with (3)He buffer gas, covering the search range 0.64 eV ≲ ma ≲ 1.17 eV. This closes the gap to the cosmological hot dark matter limit and actually overlaps with it. From the absence of excess x rays when the magnet was pointing to the Sun we set a typical upper limit on the axion-photon coupling of gaγ ≲ 3.3 × 10(-10)  GeV(-1) at 95% C.L., with the exact value depending on the pressure setting. Future direct solar axion searches will focus on increasing the sensitivity to smaller values of gaγ, for example by the currently discussed next generation helioscope International AXion Observatory.

The CERN Axion Solar Telescope (CAST) has extended its search for solar axions by using (3)He as a buffer gas. At T=1.8 K this allows for larger pressure settings and hence sensitivity to higher axion masses than our previous measurements with (4)He. With about 1 h of data taking at each of 252 different pressure settings we have scanned the axion mass range 0.39 eV≲m(a)≲0.64 eV. From the absence of excess x rays when the magnet was pointing to the Sun we set a typical upper limit on the axion-photon coupling of g(aγ)≲2.3×10(-10) GeV(-1) at 95% C.L., the exact value depending on the pressure setting. Kim-Shifman-Vainshtein-Zakharov axions are excluded at the upper end of our mass range, the first time ever for any solar axion search. In the future we will extend our search to m(a)≲1.15 eV, comfortably overlapping with cosmological hot dark matter bounds.
