Recently, there has been an increasing interest in SIJ fusion using minimally invasive surgery (MIS) due to safety. Initially, devices designed for MIS were intended for lateral approaches. A minimally invasive sacroiliac fusion implant for use with a posterior approach has been developed and is regulated for clinical use under the regulatory framework required for human cells, tissues, or cellular or tissue-based products (HCT/Ps).Methods: A multi-center, prospective, single-arm study was launched after initial studies provided preliminary data to support safety, efficacy, and durability of this minimally invasive sacroiliac posterior fusion LinQ allograft implant (NCT04423120). Preliminary results were reported previously. Final results for the full participant cohort are presented here.Results: One-hundred and fifty-nine (159) participants were enrolled across 16 investigational sites in the US between January 2020 and March 2022. One-hundred and twenty-two (122) participants were implanted. At the 1-month follow-up, 82 participants satisfied all criteria for the composite responder endpoint, representing 73.2% of the study cohort. These results stayed consistent across the remaining study timepoints with 66.0%, 74.4%, and 73.5% of participants classified as responders at the 3-, 6- and 12-month follow-up visits, respectively. VAS scores were significantly reduced (p < 0.0001) and ODI scores were significantly improved (p < 0.0001). All domains of the PROMIS-29 were also significantly improved (all p’s < 0.0001). Only one procedure-related serious AE was reported in the study.Conclusion: These results suggest that the posterior approach LinQ Implant System is a safe and effective treatment for sacroiliac joint dysfunction at 12 months, with results that are favorable compared to outcomes reported for an FDA-cleared lateral approach.Keywords: sacroiliac joint disease, sacroiliac fusion, single point posterior fusion, back pain, minimally invasive spine surgery, sacroiliitis

Abstract

The fundamental sensitivity limit of atomic force microscopy is strongly correlated to the thermal noise of the cantilever oscillation. A method to suppress this unwanted noise is to reduce the bandwidth of the measurement, but this approach is limited by the speed of the measurement and the width of the cantilever resonance, commonly defined through the quality factor Q. However, it has been shown that optomechanical resonances in interferometers might affect the cantilever oscillations resulting in an effective quality factor Q$_{eff}$ . When the laser power is sufficiently increased the cantilever oscillations might even reach the regime of self-oscillation. In this self-oscillation state, the noise of the system is partially determined by the interaction with the laser light far from equilibrium. Here, we show and discuss how tuning of the laser power leads to nonlinear optomechanical effects that can dramatically increase the effective quality factor of the cantilever leading to out-of-equilibrium noise. Abstract

Graphene nanoribbons show exciting electronic properties related to the exotic nature of the charge carriers and to local confinement as well as atomic-scale structural details. The local work function provides evidence for such structural, electronic and chemical variations at surfaces. Kelvin prove force microscopy (KPFM) can be used to measure the local contact potential difference (LCPD) between a probe tip and a surface, related to the work function. Here we use this technique to map the LCPD of graphene nanoribbons grown on a Au(111) substrate. The LCPD data shows charge transfer between the graphene nanoribbons and the gold substrate. Our results are corroborated with density functional theory calculations which verify that the maps reflect from the doping of nanoribbons. Our results help to understand the relation between atomic structures and electronic properties.

10. Film thickness of Pb islands on the Si(111) surface

Abstract

We analyze topographic scanning force microscopy images together with Kelvin probe images obtained on Pb islands and on the wetting layer on Si(111) for variable annealing times. Within the wetting layer we observe negatively charged Si-rich areas. We show evidence that these Si-rich areas result from islands that have disappeared by coarsening. We argue that the islands are located on Si-rich areas inside the wetting layer such that the Pb/Si interface of the islands is in line with the top of the wetting layer rather than with its interface to the substrate. We propose that the Pb island heights are one atomic layer smaller than previously believed. For the quantum size effect bilayer oscillations of the work function observed in this system, we conclude that for film thicknesses below 9 atomic layers large values of the work function correspond to even numbers of monolayers instead of odd ones. The atomically precise island height is important to understand ultrafast "explosive" island growth in this system.

11. Epitaxial growth of C$_{60}$ on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite surfaces studied at low temperatures

Abstract

Graphite surfaces interact weakly with molecules compared to other conducting surfaces bringing the molecule-molecule interaction to the foreground. C$_{60}$ on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite is a model system for studying the molecular self-assembly on surfaces. Our scanning tunneling microscopy measurements at liquid nitrogen temperatures confirm the previously observed island growth mode. Our results indicate that there is an epitaxial relationship of the molecular islands and the substrate with three possible orientations of the islands. For one of these orientations, we determine this epitaxial relationship by analyzing in detail an image taken across a C$_{60}$ island step edge. In this image we have obtained high resolution on both the molecular island and the substrate. The result of this analysis is confirmed by two-dimensional Fourier analysis.

Abstract

Einleitung: Unter Xerostomie wird eine Mundtrockenheit verstanden, die durch verminderten oder fehlenden Speichelfluss verursacht wird. Häufige Ursachen sind medikamentöse Therapien, Radiotherapie im Kopf- und Halsbereich sowie verschiedene systemische Krankheiten. 34-40% der palliativen Patient:innen mit Krebserkrankung leiden an Xerostomie. Ziel: Ziel des Posters ist es darzustellen, welche Interventionen sich zur Mundbefeuchtung bei Xerostomie-Betroffenen im palliativen Setting eignen. Methode: Es wurde eine systematisierte Literaturrecherche auf PubMed und CINAHL Complete durchgeführt. Mittels Citation Tracking wurden weitere Studien gefunden. Ergebnisse: Eine mögliche Intervention bei Xerostomie ist ein Speicheldrüsen-Stimulanz; ein Produkt, welches den Speichelfluss anregt. Der Wirkstoff Pilocarpin stimuliert die Sekretion der exokrinen Drüsen und fördert somit die Speichelproduktion. Dieser Effekt gelingt nur bei einer Restfunktion der Speicheldrüse. Weitaus häufiger kommt künstlicher Speichelersatz zum Einsatz. Die Wirkungsdauer des flüssigen Speichelersatzes beträgt meist weniger als eine Stunde. Im Vergleich zu flüssigen zeigen die Gel-Produkte eine etwas längere Wirkung. Ein Vergleich der verschiedenen Interventionen wird in der Tabelle 1 dargestellt. Diskussion / Empfehlung für die Praxis: Da kaum Studien zu Xerostomie im palliativen Setting vorhanden sind, wurde auch alternative Settings miteinbezogen. Aufgrund dem geringen Anwendungsintervall scheint Pilocarpin für Patient:innen und Pflegefachpersonen ein zielführendes Produkt zu sein. Da Xerostomie aber häufig auch in der terminalen Phase auftritt, wo das Schlucken von Tabletten nicht mehr möglich ist, und das Produkt unerwünschte systemische Wirkungen wie Nausea und Schweissausbrüche hat, ist dessen Einsatz nicht uneingeschränkt zu empfehlen. 20. Methodiek voor de bepaling van de staat van instandhouding van vogels

Abstract

In het voorliggende rapport wordt toegewerkt naar een methode om de landelijke staat van instandhouding van vogels te bepalen. Het begrip ‘staat van instandhouding’ is ontleend aan de Habitatrichtlijn en (bij soorten) synoniem voor de duurzaamheid van een populatie. De te ontwikkelen methodiek is bedoeld voor alle van nature in ons land voorkomende vogelsoorten. Een beoogde toepassing is de actualisatie van de doelensystematiek Natura 2000, waarvoor onder andere actuele informatie over de staat van instandhouding van vogels nodig is. Als eerste stap zijn de potentieel geschikte benaderingen geïnventariseerd. De elf geïdentificeerde benaderingen zijn met elkaar vergeleken en getoetst aan de criteria zoals in de Habitatrichtlijn verwoord om de gunstige staat van instandhouding te beoordelen. Deze criteria zijn in veel opzichten ook op vogels van toepassing, zowel ecologisch als in de jurisprudentie. Uit de vergelijking volgt dat er geen geschikte benadering bestaat, maar dat de geschikte methodiek wel uit de verschillende benaderingen kan worden samengesteld. Dat gebeurt in dit rapport. Het advies voor de bepaling van de staat van instandhouding van vogels gaat overeenkomstig de Habitatrichtlijn uit van de beoordeling van vier aspecten: verspreidingsgebied, populatie, leefgebied en toekomstperspectief. Per aspect kan het oordeel uitkomen op gunstig, matig ongunstig, zeer ongunstig of onbekend. Het meest sombere oordeel van een aspect vormt het eindoordeel.

21. Geactualiseerd landelijk overzicht van vogelsoorten met concentraties van (inter)nationaal belang

Abstract

Ten behoeve van de bescherming van leefgebieden van vogels vereist de Vogelrichtlijn dat lidstaten van de Europese Unie speciale beschermingszones (hierna: vogelrichtlijngebieden) aanwijzen. Verschillende ontwikkelingen sinds de eeuwwisseling, waaronder nieuwe kennis over belangrijke vogelgebieden in Nederland, maken het wenselijk om het overzicht van de ligging van belangrijke leefgebieden voor vogels te actualiseren. Het ministerie van Landbouw, Natuur en Voedselkwaliteit heeft Sovon verzocht om aan de hand van verkennende doorrekeningen een actueel beeld te schetsen van de gebieden die op grond van de daarin aanwezige vogelaantallen in beeld komen voor een nadere beschouwing. Het gaat om het in beeld brengen van gebieden waar bepaalde vogelsoorten geregeld gebruik van maken in concentraties van (inter)nationaal belang. Daarom worden deze gebieden ‘concentratiegebieden’ genoemd. In dit rapport worden de feitelijke resultaten van de indicatieve doorrekeningen voor het in beeld brengen van de concentratiegebieden per relevante soort van de Vogelrichtlijn gepresenteerd. Deze concentratiegebieden hebben geen formele status. Ook de begrenzing van die gebieden is vooralsnog alleen indicatief bepaald. De verdere beoordeling en mogelijke doorwerking van de resultaten valt buiten de reikwijdte van dit rapport.

Abstract

De ministers van Infrastructuur en Waterstaat (IenW), Landbouw, Natuur en Voedselkwaliteit (LNV) en Binnenlandse Zaken en Koninkrijksrelaties (BZK) willen samen met de betrokken provincies en waterschappen een programma ‘Integraal Riviermanagement’ (IRM) vaststellen met daarin een integrale visie voor de riviersystemen van Rijn en Maas. In IRM leggen Rijk en regio alle opgaven op het gebied van waterveiligheid, bevaarbaarheid, zoetwaterbeschikbaarheid, waterkwaliteit, natuur, economische ontwikkeling en de kansen voor recreatie en een aantrekkelijke leefomgeving naast elkaar. Het programma bevat keuzes voor de bodemligging en afvoercapaciteit van de rivieren en een indicatie van toekomstige maatregelen die nodig zijn om aan de opgaven te voldoen. Voor het besluit hierover is een plan-milieueffectrapport (MER) opgesteld. Het ministerie van IenW heeft de Commissie voor de MER (hierna ‘de Commissie’) gevraagd te adviseren over het MER. In dit advies spreekt de Commissie zich uit over de juistheid en de volledigheid van het MER.

Abstract

De provincie Overijssel wil maatregelen nemen die bijdragen aan de natuurdoelen voor het beschermde natuurgebied De Wieden. In vier gebieden, 197 hectare in totaliteit worden hydrologische herstelmaatregelen genomen zoals verhoging van het waterpeil en maaiveldverlaging, waarna ze worden ontwikkeld tot natuurgebied. De vier gebieden liggen al in het aangewezen Natura 2000-gebied. Met deze maatregelen komt er meer ruimte voor moerasvogels en de otter. Ook wordt ingezet op de ontwikkeling van blauwgraslanden. Voor het besluit over het provinciaal inpassingsplan (PIP), de ontgrondingenvergunning, de watervergunning en het peilbesluit is een milieueffectrapport opgesteld. De provincie Overijssel heeft de Commissie voor de milieueffectrapportage gevraagd te adviseren over de kwaliteit en volledigheid van het opgestelde MER.

In de NDA is alleen stikstof via atmosferische depositie onderzocht. Deze focus geeft een onvolledig beeld van de druk op de natuur en de benodigde maatregelen. Zoals de NDA ook vermeldt hebben andere drukfactoren in de Grevelingen een groter negatief effect op natuurdoelen dan stikstof. 4. Inzicht in het ecologisch functioneren van het gebied is nodig om effectieve herstelmaatregelen te bepalen. De NDA toont niet alle drukfactoren en oorzaken daarvan in het gebied, waardoor niet duidelijk is welke maatregelen de problemen kunnen oplossen. 5. De Ecologische Autoriteit adviseert daarom ook de doelen voor niet-stikstofgevoelige habitattypen en soorten in beeld te brengen. Beter inzicht in de staat van de natuur en de interactie met niet stikstofgevoelige natuurdoelen is daarbij noodzakelijk. 6. De NDA toont niet alle drukfactoren en oorzaken daarvan in het gebied, waardoor niet duidelijk is welke maatregelen de problemen kunnen oplossen. 5. De Ecologische Autoriteit adviseert daarom ook de doelen voor niet-stikstofgevoelige habitattypen en soorten in beeld te brengen. Abstract

The electrical resistance R of metallic nanocontacts subjected to controlled cyclic electromigration in ultra-high vacuum has been investigated in-situ as a function of applied voltage V. For sufficiently small contacts, i.e., large resistance, a decrease of R(V) while increasing V is observed. This effect is tentatively attributed to the presence of contacts separated by thin vacuum barriers in parallel to ohmic nanocontacts. Simple model calculations indicate that both thermal activation or tunneling can lead to this unusual behavior. We describe our data by a tunneling model whose key parameter, i.e., the tunneling distance, changes because of thermal expansion due to Joule heating and/or electrostatic strain arising from the applied voltage. Oxygen exposure during electromigration prevents the formation of negative R(V) slopes, and at the same time enhances the probability of uncontrolled melting, while other gases show little effects. Abstract

Atoms or pairs of ions picked up by probe tips used in dynamic force microscopy (DFM) can be strongly displaced and even hop discontinuously upon approach to the sample surface. The energy barriers for some of those hops are of the right order of magnitude to explain the rise in energy dissipation commonly observed in DFM measurements at room temperature. The systematic computations reported here can explain the infrequent jumps and very low average energy dissipation observed low temperature in a previous DFM study on a KBr(001) sample. Close to the surface we indeed find new states separated by small energy barriers which account for those phenomena. These energy barriers strongly depend on details of the atomic arrangement in the vicinity of the tip apex.

Abstract

We show scanning probe microscopy measurements of metallic nanocontacts between controlled electromigration cycles. The nanowires used for the thinning process are fabricated by shadow evaporation. The highest resolution obtained using scanning force microscopy is about 3 nm. During the first few electromigration cycles the overall slit structure of the nanocontact is formed. The slit first passes along grain boundaries and then at a later stage vertically splits grains in the course of consuming them. We find that first the whole wire is heated and later during the thinning process as the slit forms the current runs over several smaller contacts which needs less power., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

We present a detailed study in the paramagnetic regime of the frustrated $s$ = 1/2 spin-compound linarite, PbCuSO$_4$(OH)$_2$, with competing ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor and antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor exchange interactions. Our data reveal highly anisotropic values for the saturation field along the crystallographic main directions, with $\sim$ 7.6, $\sim$ 10.5 and $\sim$ 8.5\,T for the $a$, $b$, and $c$ axes, respectively. In the paramagnetic regime, this behavior is explained mainly by the anisotropy of the \textit{g}-factor but leaving room for an easy-axis exchange anisotropy. Within the isotropic $J_1$-$J_2$ spin model our experimental data are described by various theoretical approaches yielding values for the exchange interactions $J_1$ $\sim$ -100\,K and $J_2$ $\sim$ 36\,K. These main intrachain exchange integrals are significantly larger as compared to the values derived in two previous studies in the literature and shift the frustration ratio $\alpha = J_2/|J_1|$ $\approx$ 0.36 of linarite closer to the 1D critical point at 0.25. Electron spin resonance (ESR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements further prove that the static susceptibility is dominated by the intrinsic spin susceptibility. The Knight shift as well as the broadening of the linewidth in ESR and NMR at elevated temperatures indicate a highly frustrated system with the onset of magnetic correlations far above the magnetic ordering temperature $T_\mathrm{N}$ = 2.75(5)\,K, in agreement with the calculated exchange constants., Comment: 18 pages, 18 figures

Abstract

Tunable nanopores in elastomeric membranes have been used to study the dependence of ionic current blockade rate on the concentration and electrophoretic mobility of particles in aqueous suspensions. A range of nanoparticle sizes, materials and surface functionalities has been tested. Using pressure-driven flow through a pore, the blockade rate for 100 nm carboxylated polystyrene particles was found to be linearly proportional to both transmembrane pressure (controlled between 0 and 1.8 kPa) and particle concentration (between 7 x 10^8 and 4.5 x 10^10 mL^-1). This result can be accurately modelled using Nernst-Planck transport theory. Using only an applied potential across a pore, the blockade rates for carboxylic acid and amine coated 500 nm and 200 nm silica particles were found to correspond to changes in their mobility as a function of the solution pH. Scanning electron microscopy and confocal microscopy have been used to visualise changes in the tunable nanopore geometry in three dimensions as a function of applied mechanical strain. The pores observed were conical in shape, and changes in pore size were consistent with ionic current measurements. A zone of inelastic deformation adjacent to the pore has been identified as critical in the tuning process.

Abstract

We discuss the key principles of artificial photosynthesis for photovoltaic energy conversion. We demonstrate these principles by examining the operation of the so-called "dye sensitized solar cell" (DSSC) - a photoelectrochemical device which simulates the charge separation process across a nano-structured membrane that is characteristic of natural systems. These type of devices have great potential to challenge silicon semiconductor technology in the low cost, medium efficiency segment of the PV market. Ruthenium charge transfer complexes are currently used as the photon harvesting components in DSSCs. They produce a relatively broad band UV and visible response, but have long term stability problems and are expensive to manufacture. We suggest that a class of biological macromolecules called the melanins may be suitable replacements for the ruthenium complexes. They have strong, broad band absorption, are chemically and photochemically very stable, can be cheaply and easily synthesized, and are also bio-available and bio-compatible. We demonstrate a melanin-based regenerative solar cell, and discuss the key properties that are necessary for an effective broad band photon harvesting system., Comment: 45 pages, 17 figures

44. Widespread shallow mesoscale circulations observed in the trades

Abstract

Understanding the drivers of cloud organization is crucial for accurately estimating cloud feedbacks and their contribution to climate warming. Shallow mesoscale circulations are thought to play an important role in cloud organization, but they have not been observed. Here we present observational evidence for the existence of shallow mesoscale overturning circulations using divergence measurements made during the EUREC4A field campaign in the North Atlantic trades. Meteorological re-analyses reproduce the observed low-level divergence well and confirm the circulations to be mesoscale features (around 200 km across). We find that the shallow mesoscale circulations are associated with large variability in mesoscale vertical velocity and amplify moisture variance at the cloud base. Through their modulation of cloud-base moisture, the circulations influence how efficiently the subcloud layer dries, thus producing moist ascending branches and dry descending branches. The observed moisture variance differs from expectations from large-eddy simulations, which show the largest variance near the cloud top and negligible subcloud variance. The ubiquity of shallow mesoscale circulations, and their coupling to moisture and cloud fields, suggests that the strength and scale of mesoscale circulations are integral to determining how clouds respond to climate change.

45. A new conceptual picture of the trade wind transition layer

Abstract

The transition layer in the trades has long been observed and simulated, but the physical processes producing its structure remain little investigated. Using extensive observations from the Elucidating the Role of Clouds–Circulation Coupling in Climate (EUREC4A) field campaign, we propose a new conceptual picture of the trade wind transition layer, occurring between the mixed-layer top (around 550 m) and subcloud-layer top (around 700 m). The theory of cloud-free convective boundary layers suggests a transition-layer structure with strong jumps at the mixed-layer top, yet such strong jumps are only observed rarely. Despite cloud-base cloud fraction measured as only 5.3 6 3.2, the canonical cloud-free convective boundary layer structure is infrequent and confined to large [O(200) km] cloud-free areas. We show that the majority of cloud bases form within the transition layer, instead of above it, and that the cloud-top height distribution is bimodal, with a first population of very shallow clouds (tops below 1.3 km) and a second population of deeper clouds (extending to 2–3 km depth). We then show that the life cycle of this first cloud population maintains the transition-layer structure. That is, very shallow clouds smooth vertical thermodynamic gradients in the transition layer by a condensation–evaporation mechanism, which is fully coupled to the mixed layer. Inferences from mixed-layer theory and mixing diagrams, moreover, suggest that the observed transition-layer structure does not affect the rate of entrainment mixing, but rather the properties of the air incorporated into the mixed layer, primarily to enhance its rate of moistening. © 2023 American Meteorological Society.

Abstract

Het Rijk wil een Programma Energiehoofdstructuur (PEH) vaststellen. Dit vervangt verschillende bestaande nationale structuurvisies (het derde structuurschema Elektriciteitsvoorziening, de structuurvisie Windenergie op Land en de structuurvisie Buisleidingen). Het PEH heeft als doel dat er voldoende ruimte is voor de nationale energiehoofdstructuur op land en in de grote wateren in 2050. Het Noordzeegebied valt buiten de reikwijdte van het PEH. Voor het besluit over het programma is een integrale effectenanalyse (IEA) opgesteld. Hierin zijn de milieueffecten van mogelijke keuzes beschreven. Daarnaast is in de IEA ook naar andere aspecten gekeken waaronder de maatschappelijke kosten en baten en effecten op het energiesysteem. De minister voor Klimaat en Energie en de minister voor Volkshuisvesting en Ruimtelijke ordening hebben de Commissie gevraagd om de IEA te beoordelen op juistheid en volledigheid. De Commissie focust daarbij op het milieugedeelte en (energie)doelbereik van de IEA. Zij doet geen uitspraken over de aspecten die zich niet richten op milieu en omgevingsaspecten.

De gemeente en provincie hebben de Commissie voor de milieueffectrapportage (hierna ‘de Commissie’) gevraagd te adviseren over het MER. In dit advies spreekt de Commissie zich uit over de juistheid en de volledigheid van het MER.
