A threefold increase in the CO2 conversion and energy efficiency due to the cooling of the post-discharge region by the counter gas flow has been achieved in the plasma of an atmospheric pressure discharge supported by microwave radiation of a gyrotron with a frequency of 24 GHz in a carbon dioxide gas flow. The role of convective heat transfer in the process of gas mixture cooling in the post-discharge region has been experimentally demonstrated. At nitrogen quench gas flow of 4.5 l/min, the CO2 conversion was 23.8 % and energy efficiency was 19.7 %. The possibility of using the flow of cooled gas mixture (CO2,CO,O2) taken from the reactor as quenching gas has been experimentally demonstrated, which made it possible to achieve a CO2 conversion degree of 23.4 % and to eliminate the problem of dilution of reaction products by third-party gases. Based on numerical modeling, it is shown that the increase in the conversion degree upon the destruction of the plasma torch structure is due to the increase in heat exchange with the surrounding atmosphere, and the efficiency of this destruction is determined by the velocity and density of quenching gas., Comment: 20 pages, 14 pages, submitted to the Journal of Energy Chemistry 28.11.2023

This paper studies a continuous atmospheric-pressure discharge maintained by focused subterahertz radiation of a 263 GHz gyrotron. A plasma torch propagating towards microwave radiation was sustained on an argon flow exiting a metal gas tube in the surrounding atmosphere of air. Using a high-speed camera, the spatial structure of the torch was studied and the temporal dynamics on timescales of the order of 20 ns was examined. The emission spectra of the optical wavelength range were used to estimate the excitation temperature of argon atoms and electron density. It was shown that a discharge of this type is substantially non-equilibrium and the electron temperature is many times higher than the vibrational and gas temperatures, being 1.5-1.7 eV in order of magnitude. The electron density measured by the Stark broadening hydrogen lines exceeds a critical value for the frequency of the heating field.

We report the first direct demonstration of possibility to generate the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) radiation with a freely expanding jet of dense plasma with multiply-charged ions supported by high-power microwaves. The detected emission power is about 20 W at 18--50 nm for argon and xenon and 0.3 W at 13--17 nm for xenon. The discharge with a peak electron density up to $3\times 10^{16}\,$cm$^{-3}$ and a characteristic size of $150\,\mu$m is supported by a focused radiation of a recently developed gyrotron with unique characteristics, 250~kW output power at 250~GHz, operating in a relatively long (50$\,\mu$s) pulse mode. Up-scaling of these experimental results gives grounds for development of a point-like kilowatt-level EUV source for a high-resolution lithography able to fulfill requirements of the microelectronics industry., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Appl. Plasma of a stationary ECR discharge sustained by gyrotron radiation at a frequency of 24 GHz and a power of up to 600 W in a mirror magnetic trap was studied. At pressures near the gas breakdown threshold, the extinction effect of an electron-cyclotron discharge is observed with increasing radiation power. When the cyclotron resonance cross section approaches the magnetic plug, the power threshold corresponding to the discharge extinction decreases. These experimental results confirm the presence of the effect of particles precipitation from the trap as a result of electron-cyclotron resonance interaction with gyrotron radiation. The experimental scaling of the extinction power dependence on the position of the ECR cross section in a magnetic trap corresponds to the results of the estimates on the basis of the theory of particle precipitation in the quasilinear diffusion regime., Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures, 1 appendix
