When grid power demand is low or the power price is negative, running a gas turbine at Full Speed No Load (FSNL) provides a way to avoid producing power, while maintaining the ability to both generate process steam for industrial purposes in a Heat Recovery Steam Generator (HRSG) and to respond quickly to sudden surges in grid power demand. In this paper, turbine thermodynamics of FSNL, closure of inlet guide vanes (IGV), and compressor bleed rates are analysed for General Electric’s 7EA gas turbine using the software Thermoflow. This study shows that FSNL can be achieved only by bleeding of compressor mass flow through two available bleeds, one in the front section of the compressor, and one in the back section of the turbine. This paper shows that bleeding from bleed 1 will lower compressor work, saving fuel, but it will also drop the exhaust temperature too low, preventing steam production. With extraction from bleed 2, the exhaust temperature remains high. Either way, the exhaust energy is reduced due to reduction of mass flow, but steam generation in reduced amount is possible. The extracted mass flow is choked and limited by the critical section in the flow path of the compressor bleed. In this study, the required minimal size of the slot in bleed 2 is identified for a range of IGV positions.

Muons from extensive air showers appear as rings in images taken with imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes, such as VERITAS. These muon-ring images are used for the calibration of the VERITAS telescopes, however the calibration accuracy can be improved with a more efficient muon-identification algorithm. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are used in many state-of-the-art image-recognition systems and are ideal for muon image identification, once trained on a suitable dataset with labels for muon images. However, by training a CNN on a dataset labelled by existing algorithms, the performance of the CNN would be limited by the suboptimal muon-identification efficiency of the original algorithms. Muon Hunters 2 is a citizen science project that asks users to label grids of VERITAS telescope images, stating which images contain muon rings. Each image is labelled 10 times by independent volunteers, and the votes are aggregated and used to assign a `muon' or `non-muon' label to the corresponding image. An analysis was performed using an expert-labelled dataset in order to determine the optimal vote percentage cut-offs for assigning labels to each image for CNN training. This was optimised so as to identify as many muon images as possible while avoiding false positives. The performance of this model greatly improves on existing muon identification algorithms, identifying approximately 30 times the number of muon images identified by the current algorithm implemented in VEGAS (VERITAS Gamma-ray Analysis Suite), and roughly 2.5 times the number identified by the Hough transform method, along with significantly outperforming a CNN trained on VEGAS-labelled data.

1A 0535+262 is a Be X-ray binary pulsar and one of the only galactic pulsar systems to show radio jet emission. Characterizing the very high energy emission (VHE, >100 GeV) in these extreme microquasars is critical to understanding their contribution to the origin of galactic cosmic rays. The 2020 giant outburst of this system, where X-ray fluxes exceeded 12 Crab, marked a rare opportunity to investigate the gamma-ray and rapid optical variability of these transient systems while in such an extreme state. This month of activity marked the brightest flare measured in this system. VERITAS's developing optical capabilities in tandem with the ability to measure TeV gamma rays allowed for a unique campaign to be undertaken. VERITAS's observations of this system during the outburst will be presented in the context of observations at lower energies and previous observations of this system by imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes.

Fast radio burst (FRBs) are an exciting class of bright, extragalactic, millisecond radio transients. The recent development of large field-of-view (FOV) radio telescopes has caused a rapid rise in the number of identified single burst and repeating FRBs. This has allowed for the extensive multi-wavelength follow-up to search for the potential counterparts predicted by theoretical models. New observations of similar radio transients in Galactic magnetars like SGR 1935+2154 have continued to motivate the search for rapid optical and very-high-energy (VHE, >100 GeV) counterparts. Since 2016 VERITAS has engaged in an FRB observing campaign to search for the prompt optical, and VHE emission from multiple repeating FRBs. We present these new results from VERITAS observations of five repeating sources including data taken simultaneously with bursts observed by the CHIME radio telescope.

The Schwarzschild-Couder Telescope (SCT) is a telescope concept proposed for the Cherenkov Telescope Array. It employs a dual-mirror optical design to remove comatic aberrations over an $8^{\circ}$ field of view, and a high-density silicon photomultiplier camera (with a pixel resolution of 4 arcmin) to record Cherenkov emission from cosmic ray and gamma-ray initiated particle cascades in the atmosphere. The prototype SCT (pSCT), comprising a 9.7 m diameter primary mirror and a partially instrumented camera with 1536 pixels, has been constructed at the Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory. The telescope was inaugurated in January 2019, with commissioning continuing throughout 2019. We describe the first campaign of observations with the pSCT, conducted in January and February of 2020, and demonstrate the detection of gamma-ray emission from the Crab Nebula with a statistical significance of $8.6\sigma$., Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures, 3 tables, submitted to Astroparticle Physics

The gamma-ray blazar TXS 0506+056 was found with an enhanced gamma-ray emission state in spatial and temporal coincidence with the IceCube high energy neutrino event IC170922A. This is the most significant association by far between a high-energy neutrino event and a blazar in a flaring state. Studying the time evolution and spectral behavior of the blazar emission may help in identifying the sources of the diffuse neutrino flux observed by IceCube and the origin of energetic cosmic rays. TXS 0506+056 was detected by the VERITAS gamma-ray observatory with a significance of 5.8 standard deviations above 110 GeV in a 35 hour data set collected between September 23, 2017 and February 6, 2018. Here we will present results from recent VERITAS observations and an associated multiwavelength campaign, collected between October 10, 2018 to March 1, 2021. A relatively quiet very high energy gamma-ray emission state was observed during this time period, and flux upper limits are used to constrain the potential variability of this blazar.

The novel 9.7m Schwarzschild-Couder Telescope (SCT), utilizing aspheric dual-mirror optical system, has been constructed as a prototype medium size x-ray telescope for the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) observatory. The prototype SCT (pSCT) is designed to achieve simultaneously the wide (>= 8°) field of view and the superior imaging resolution (0.067 per pixel) to significantly improve scientific capabilities of the observatory in conducting the sky surveys, the follow-up observations of multi-messenger transients with poorly known initial localization and the morphology studies of x-ray sources with angular extent. In this submission, we describe the hardware and software implementations of the telescope optical system as well as the methods specifically developed to align its complex optical system, in which both primary and secondary mirrors are segmented. The pSCT has detected Crab Nebula in June 2020 during ongoing commissioning, which was delayed due to worldwide pandemic and is not yet completed. Verification of pSCT performance is continuing and further improvement of optical alignment is anticipated.

For the first time in the history of ground-based $\gamma$-ray astronomy, the on-axis performance of the dual mirror, aspheric, aplanatic Schwarzschild-Couder optical system has been demonstrated in a $9.7$-m aperture imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescope. The novel design of the prototype Schwarzschild-Couder Telescope (pSCT) is motivated by the need of the next-generation Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) observatory to have the ability to perform wide ($\geq 8^{\circ}$) field-of-view observations simultaneously with superior imaging of atmospheric cascades (resolution of $0.067^{\circ}$ per pixel or better). The pSCT design, if implemented in the CTA installation, has the potential to improve significantly both the $\gamma$-ray angular resolution and the off-axis sensitivity of the observatory, reaching nearly the theoretical limit of the technique and thereby making a major impact on the CTA observatory sky survey programs, follow-up observations of multi-messenger transients with poorly known initial localization, as well as on the spatially resolved spectroscopic studies of extended $\gamma$-ray sources. The astrophysical journal 896(1), 41 - (2020). doi:10.3847/1538-4357/ab910e, The radio source 3C 264, hosted by the giant elliptical galaxy NGC 3862, was observed with VERITAS between February 2017 and May 2019. These deep observations resulted in the discovery of very-high-energy (VHE; E $>100$ GeV) $\gamma$-ray emission from this active galaxy. An analysis of $\sim$57 hours of quality-selected live time yields a detection at the position of the source, corresponding to a statistical significance of 7.8 standard deviations above background. The observed VHE flux is variable on monthly time scales, with an elevated flux seen in 2018 observations. The VHE emission during this elevated state is well-characterized by a power-law spectrum with a photon index $\Gamma = 2.20 \pm 0.27$ and flux F($>315$ GeV) = ($7.6\pm 1.2_{\mathrm stat} \pm 2.3_{\mathrm syst})\times 10^{-13}$ cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$, or approximately 0.7% of the Crab Nebula flux above the same threshold. 3C 264 ($z = 0.0217$) is the most distant radio galaxy detected at VHE, and the elevated state is thought to be similar to that of the famously outbursting jet in M 87. Consequently, extensive contemporaneous multi-wavelength data were acquired in 2018 at the time of the VHE high state. The first prototype of the Schwarzschild Couder Medium Size Telescope (pSCT) proposed for the CTA observatory has been installed in 2018 at the Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory. The pSCT camera is composed of 25 modules with 64 channels each, covering only a small portion of the full focal plane of the telescope. The Italian Institute of Nuclear Physics (INFN) has developed and characterized in collaboration with Fondazione Bruno Kessler (FBK) a new generation of Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPMs) sensitive to the Near Ultraviolet wavelengths, based on the High Density technology (NUV-HD devices). The latest generation of 6×6 mm2 SiPMs (called NUV-HD3) have been used to equip a subsection of 9 out of 25 modules of the pSCT camera. An upgrade of this camera is foreseen between 2019 and 2020 using the same sensors, aiming to equip the full focal plane with 177 modules, for a total of more than 11000 pixels. We will present a full characterization of the performance of these devices, highlighting why they are suitable for Cherenkov light detection. An overview on the overall behavior of the installed sensors will be also given, providing information on the uniformity of the sensors and of the performance of the camera.

As such, searches for evidence of DM particles are being carried out using a wide range of techniques, such as direct searches for DM particles, searches for DM produced with colliders, and indirect searches for the Standard Model annihilation products of DM. Dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs) are excellent targets for indirect Dark Matter searches due to their relatively high DM content and negligible expected astrophysical background. A collaboration was formed to maximise the sensitivity of DM searches towards dSphs by combining for the first time dSph data from three imaging air Cherenkov telescope (IACT) arrays: HESS, MAGIC, and VERITAS; the Fermi-LAT satellite, and the water Cherenkov detector HAWC. Due to the diverse nature of the instruments involved, each experiment will analyse their individual datasets from multiple targets and then the results will be combined at the likelihood level. For consistency of the likelihoods across the five experiments, a common approach is used to treat the astrophysical factor (J-Factor) for each target and an agreed set of annihilation channels are considered. We also agree on a common statistical approach and treatment of instrumental systematic uncertainties. The results are presented in terms of constraints on the velocity-weighted cross section for DM self-annihilation as a function of the DM particle mass.

Near UltraViolet High Density (NUV-HD) SiPMs produced by Fondazione Bruno Kessler in collaboration with INFN have been tested and characterized in INFN laboratories. The third generation of these devices (HD3) has proven to be suitable to equip the focal plane of the prototype Schwarzschild–Couder Medium Size Telescope (pSCT) proposed for the Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory. Photosensors have been assembled in 4 16-pixel optical units coupled with TARGET–7 ASIC front-end electronics for amplification and digitization of the signal. At present, 9 modules have been successfully integrated on the pSCT camera and are currently taking data. In this contribution we report on the performances of the HD3 technology as single sensor and as assembled optical units, showing their performance and homogeneity in terms of gain and dark count rate.

We present results from deep observations towards the Cygnus region using 300 hours of very-high-energy (VHE) $\gamma$-ray data taken with the VERITAS Cherenkov telescope array and over seven years of high-energy $\gamma$-ray data taken with the Fermi satellite at an energy above 1 GeV. As the brightest region of diffuse $\gamma$-ray emission in the northern sky, the Cygnus region provides a promising area to probe the origins of cosmic rays. We report the identification of a potential Fermi-LAT counterpart to VER J2031+415 (TeV J2032+4130), and resolve the extended VHE source VER J2019+368 into two source candidates (VER J2018+367* and VER J2020+368*) and characterize their energy spectra. The Fermi-LAT morphology of 3FGL 2021.0+4031e (the Gamma-Cygni supernova remnant) was examined and a region of enhanced emission coincident with VER J2019+407 was identified and jointly fit with the VERITAS data. By modeling 3FGL J2015.6+3709 as two sources, one located at the location of the pulsar wind nebula CTB 87 and one at the quasar QSO J2015+371, a continuous spectrum from 1 GeV to 10 TeV was extracted for VER J2016+371 (CTB 87). An additional 71 locations coincident with Fermi-LAT sources and other potential objects of interest were tested for VHE $\gamma$-ray emission, with no emission detected and upper limits on the differential flux placed at an average of 2.3% of the Crab Nebula ux. A full scale 9.7m Schwarzschild-Couder (SC) Telescope is a prototype for the Medium Size Telescopes (MSTs) of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) observatory. The SC-MST has been proposed as an instrument capable of achieving the ultimate performance of the imaging atmospheric Cherenkov technique (IACT) in the energy range from 100 GeV to 10 TeV for the CTA installation. Comparing to the present day IACT observatories, the SC-MST employs an aplanatic two-mirror optical system to simultaneously increase the field of view to 8 degrees and significantly improve the imaging resolution via reduction of the camera pixel size to 0.067 deg. The fully populated compact SC-MST camera will have a diameter of 80cm and is assembled from 11,328 SiPM pixels augmented with fast, highly integrated electronics based on custom ASICs and FPGAs. The project has been in development since 2012 and prototype SC-MST construction started at the Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory in southern Arizona in early 2016. In this contribution we will provide an overview of the project and its status.

The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is an international next-generation ground-based gamma-ray observatory. CTA will be implemented as southern and northern hemisphere arrays of tens of small, medium and large-sized imaging Cherenkov telescopes with the goal of improving the sensitivity over the current-generation experiments by an order of magnitude. CTA will provide energy coverage from ∼20 GeV to more than 300 TeV. The Schwarzschild-Couder (SC) medium size (9.5m) telescopes will feature a novel aplanatic two-mirror optical design capable of accommodating a wide field-of-view with significantly improved angular resolution as compared to the traditional Davies-Cotton optical design. A full-scale prototype SC medium size telescope structure has been designed and will be constructed at the Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory in southern Arizona during the fall of 2015. This report will concentrate on the novel features of the design.

The BL Lacertae object 1ES 1440+122 was observed in the energy range from 85 GeV to 30 TeV by the VERITAS array of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. The observations, taken between 2008 May and 2010 June and totalling 53 hours, resulted in the discovery of $\gamma$-ray emission from the blazar, which has a redshift $z$=0.163. 1ES 1440+122 is detected at a statistical significance of 5.5 standard deviations above the background with an integral flux of (2.8$\pm0.7_{\mathrm{stat}}\pm0.8_{\mathrm{sys}}$) $\times$ 10$^{-12}$ cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ (1.2\% of the Crab Nebula's flux) above 200 GeV. The measured spectrum is described well by a power law from 0.2 TeV to 1.3 TeV with a photon index of 3.1 $\pm$ 0.4$_{\mathrm{stat}}$ $\pm$ 0.2$_{\mathrm{sys}}$. Quasi-simultaneous multi-wavelength data from the Fermi Large Area Telescope (0.3--300 GeV) and the Swift X-ray Telescope (0.2--10 keV) are additionally used to model the properties of the emission region. A synchrotron self-Compton model produces a good representation of the multi-wavelength data. Gamma-ray burst (GRB) observations at very high energies (VHE, E > 100 GeV) can impose tight constraints on some GRB emission models. Many GRB afterglow models predict a VHE component similar to that seen in blazars and plerions, in which the GRB spectral energy distribution has a double-peaked shape extending into the VHE regime. VHE emission coincident with delayed X-ray flare emission has also been predicted. GRB follow-up observations have had high priority in the observing program at the Whipple 10m Gamma-ray Telescope and GRBs will continue to be high priority targets as the next generation observatory, VERITAS, comes on-line. The construction of a prototype Schwarzschild-Couder telescope (pSCT) started in early June 2015 at the Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory in Southern Arizona, as a candidate medium-sized telescope for the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA). Compared to current Davies-Cotton telescopes, this novel instrument with an aplanatic two-mirror optical system will offer a wider field-of-view and improved angular resolution. In addition, the reduced plate scale of the camera allows the use of highly-integrated photon detectors such as silicon photo multipliers. As part of CTA, this design has the potential to greatly improve the performance of the next generation ground-based observatory for very high-energy (E>60 GeV) gamma-ray astronomy. In this contribution we present the design and performance of both optical and alignment systems of the pSCT.

Many Alstom heavy-duty gas turbines with a silo combustor are in service and moreover undergoing upgrades for performance augmentation, lifetime extension, and emission reduction. The combustor liners, which are exposed to high gas temperatures, may require design tuning for these upgrades, and therefore reliable simulation of their behavior is of utmost importance. This paper focuses on a case study of transient behavior of the Hot Gas Casing, a transition liner between compressor, turbine and silo combustor. Following a three-dimensional thermal assessment based on computational fluid dynamics, detailed structural analysis is done to identify the drivers behind different types of Hot Gas Casing deformation, observed after upgraded combustor introduction. Thermal Barrier Coating application is proposed to reduce Hot Gas Casing bending. The solution was confirmed analytically and successfully introduced in the field. Good correlation of field findings and finite element prediction was found. It is shown that only a combined effect of thermal deformation, cyclic loading and creep may explain the observed behavior of the part. A detailed design sensitivity study is performed, comparing different approaches to deformation reduction: application of ribs, corrugations and wall thickness increase. The best solution in terms of manufacturability and its impact on part deformation is chosen. It is found that wall corrugation does not provide the desired effect due to the nature of part deformation.

Modern gas turbines operate at high temperature, which exceed the endurance limit of material, and therefore the turbines components have to be cooled by the air taken from the compressor. The cooling providing positive impact on lifetime of GT has negative impact on its performance. Firstly because the cooling air bypasses combustor and its capacity is not fully utilized. This effect is usually accounted in thermodynamic calculations of gas turbine. Secondly the injection of cooling air in the turbine disturbs the main flow, and may lead to increased losses. In addition cooling requirements lead to limitation on the blade shape (e.g. limiting the minimal size of trailing edge) and thereby negatively affect the losses. These effects were already discussed in the literature, but further investigations for better understanding of flow physics and design improvement are still useful. There is also additional impact of cooling - impact of heat transfer on near wall boundary layer and coolant properties. This effect was not sufficiently discussed in the open literature, where quite often the walls are considered as adiabatic. The paper consists of two main parts. In the first part the results of experimental investigations of several linear cascades with and without trailing edge injection are presented and discussed. In the second part the results of detailed numerical investigations of one of these cascades are presented. One set of calculations were done at the test rig conditions for comparison with measured data. These calculations were used for validation of CFD model. The next sets of calculations were done for engine typical conditions, including the simulation of blade material temperature. The calculations were performed for adiabatic wall and for surface with heat transfer, including the impact of heat transfer on coolant injection. This analysis provides split of losses caused by different factors, and offers the opportunities for efficiency and lifetime improvements of real engine designs/upgrades.

A γ-ray flare was observed by the Large Area Telescope on board Fermi during 2012 December–2013 January, reaching a daily peak flux in the 0.1–100 GeV energy range of (155 $\pm$ 31) × $10^{−8}$ ph $cm^{−2} s^{−1}$ on 2013 January 1, corresponding to an apparent isotropic luminosity of $\sim$ 1.5 × $10^{48}$ erg $s^{−1}$. The $\gamma$-ray flaring period triggered Swift and Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System (VERITAS) observations in addition to radio and optical monitoring by Owens Valley Radio Observatory, Monitoring Of Jets in Active galactic nuclei with VLBA Experiments, and Catalina Real-time Transient Survey. A strong flare was observed in optical, UV, and X-rays on 2012 December 30, quasi-simultaneously to the $\gamma$-ray flare, reaching a record flux for this source from optical to $\gamma$-rays. VERITAS observations at very high energy (E > 100 GeV) during 2013 January 6–17 resulted in an upper limit of $F_{>0.2 TeV}$ < 4.0 × $10^{−12} ph cm^{−2} s^{−1}$. We compared the spectral energy distribution (SED) of the flaring state in 2013 January with that of an intermediate state observed in 2011. The Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System (VERITAS) being constructed in Southern Arizona consists of an array of four Atmospheric Cherenkov 12m Telescopes designed to observe astrophysical gamma rays in the energy range from 100 GeV to tens of TeV. A first telescope has been in operation on a temporary site since the end of 2004 and meets all specifications. The second is being installed on the same site, 85m from the first, in order to test stereoscopic capabilities. The full system of four telescopes is expected to be installed on the definitive site by the end of 2006.

The BL Lac object H1426+428 was recently detected as a high energy gamma-ray source by the VERITAS collaboration (Horan et al. 2002). We have reanalyzed the 2001 portion of the data used in the detection in order to examine the spectrum of H1426+428 above 250 GeV. We find that the time-averaged spectrum agrees with a power law of the shape dF/dE = 10^(-7.31 +- 0.15(stat) +- 0.16(syst)) x E^(-3.50 +- 0.35(stat) +- 0.05(syst)) m^(-2)s^(-1)TeV^(-1) The statistical evidence from our data for emission above 2.5 TeV is 2.6 sigma. With 95% c.l., the integral flux of H1426+428 above 2.5 TeV is larger than 3% of the corresponding flux from the Crab Nebula. The spectrum is consistent with the (non-contemporaneous) measurement by Aharonian et al. (2002) both in shape and in normalization. Below 800 GeV, the data clearly favours a spectrum steeper than that of any other TeV Blazar observed so far indicating a difference in the processes involved either at the source or in the intervening space., Comment: LaTeX, 8 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present results from VERITAS observations of the BL Lac object PG 1553+113 spanning the years 2010, 2011, and 2012. The time-averaged spectrum, measured between 160 and 560\,GeV, is well described by a power law with a spectral index of $4.33 \pm 0.09$. The time-averaged integral flux above $200\,$GeV measured for this period was $(1.69 \pm 0.06) \times 10^{-11} \, \mathrm{ph} \, \mathrm{cm}^{-2} \, \mathrm{s}^{-1}$, corresponding to 6.9\% of the Crab Nebula flux. We also present the combined $\gamma$-ray spectrum from the Fermi Large Area Telescope and VERITAS covering an energy range from 100~MeV to 560~GeV. The data are well fit by a power law with an exponential cutoff at $\rm {101.9 \pm 3.2 \, \mathrm{GeV}} $. The origin of the cutoff could be intrinsic to PG~1553+113 or be due to the $\gamma$-ray opacity of our universe through pair production off the extragalactic background light (EBL). Given lower limits to the redshift of $\rm z \negthinspace > \negthinspace 0.395$ based on optical/UV observations of PG~1553+113, the cutoff would be dominated by EBL absorption. Conversely, the small statistical uncertainties of the VERITAS energy spectrum have allowed us to provide a robust upper limit on the redshift of PG 1553+113 of $z \negthinspace \leq \negthinspace 0.62$. A strongly-elevated mean flux of $(2.50 \pm 0.14) \times 10^{-11} \, \mathrm{ph} \, \mathrm{cm}^{-2} \, \mathrm{s}^{-1}$ (10.3\% of the Crab Nebula flux) was observed during 2012, with the daily flux reaching as high as $(4.44 \pm 0.71) \times 10^{-11} \, \mathrm{ph} \, \mathrm{cm}^{-2} \, \mathrm{s}^{-1}$ (18.3\% of the Crab Nebula flux) on MJD 56048. The light curve measured during the 2012 observing season is marginally inconsistent with a steady flux, giving a $\chi^2$ probability for a steady flux of 0.03\%., Comment: in press in ApJ, 2014

Prompt emission from the very fluent and nearby (z=0.34) gamma-ray burst GRB 130427A was detected by several orbiting telescopes and by ground-based, wide-field-of-view optical transient monitors. Apart from the intensity and proximity of this GRB, it is exceptional due to the extremely long-lived high-energy (100 MeV to 100 GeV) gamma-ray emission, which was detected by the Large Area Telescope on the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope for ~70 ks after the initial burst. The persistent, hard-spectrum, high-energy emission suggests that the highest-energy gamma rays may have been produced via synchrotron self-Compton processes though there is also evidence that the high-energy emission may instead be an extension of the synchrotron spectrum. VERITAS, a ground-based imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescope array, began follow-up observations of GRB 130427A ~71 ks (~20 hr) after the onset of the burst. The GRB was not detected with VERITAS; however, the high elevation of the observations, coupled with the low redshift of the GRB, make VERITAS a very sensitive probe of the emission from GRB 130427A for E > 100 GeV. The non-detection and consequent upper limit derived place constraints on the synchrotron self-Compton model of high-energy gamma-ray emission from this burst., 22 pages, 4 figures, 1 table

A significant part of the overall loss in modern gas turbines is the trailing edge loss. This loss is, more strongly than other constituents, affected by operation, because the trailing edge can significantly change its shape due to degradation. Also by manufacturing of new parts and reconditioning the same tolerances as in other parts of blade lead to higher deviations of aerodynamic characteristics. Therefore the understanding of trailing edge loss generation mechanisms is of utmost importance for a sound blade design. In this work the results of combined experimental and numerical investigation of the trailing edge impact on the transonic cooled blade loss are presented. This study comprises the investigation of the unguided flow angle and the trailing edge shape on the profile losses and a base pressure. The unguided flow angle characterizes the curvature distribution on the aerofoil suction side. The numerical and experimental investigation of transonic cooled turbine cascades have shown that the increase of the unguided flow angle results in loss reduction due to increase of the base pressure downstream of the trailing edge. At the same time the deviation of the trailing edge from a round shape has detrimental effect on performance and conducted investigations allow quantification of this effect. The measurements were performed in a transonic wind tunnel and numerical simulations were done using in-house 2D Navier-Stokes code. The comparison of calculations with measurements showed that they are in reasonable agreement. The validated numerical procedure has been used for demonstration of possibility to reduce loss in aerofoil with thick trailing edge by tuning of the unguided flow angle. The use of the thick trailing edges at HP cooled turbines reduces restriction on tolerances, improves of manufacturability and reduces cost.

In todays electricity market with a strong mix of renewables and traditional energy sources, heavy-duty gas turbines often have to operate at part load with decreased exhaust mass flow. Decreased mass flow leads to reduced Mach number and this factor drives the exhaust loss down. At the same time off-design conditions lead to reduction of diffuser pressure recovery, and this factor drives loss up. The latter is normally stronger, and therefore the losses at GT low load are higher than at base load. Traditionally exhaust diffusers were optimised for base load operation, and their characteristics were analysed in range close to this regime. However with increased part load operation it became important to investigate strong off-design conditions as well. In this work the numerical analysis of diffuser flow at different conditions corresponding to GT base load and different part loads is performed. In the first part of the paper the numerical model and results of calculations are discussed. The calculations are compared with measurements in real engine, and this comparison demonstrates that numerical model provides good predictions not only for design conditions, but for off-design conditions as well. The validated numerical model was then applied to analysis of diffuser geometry impact on the off design conditions, and the second part of the paper describes the results of these calculations. The analysis showed that modification of central body and front part of diffuser have negligible impact on losses at off design conditions, but significantly reduce performance at base load leading to non-optimal redistribution of losses between different regimes. Therefore original diffuser configuration provides the best compromise for wide operational window.

We present the results of a multi-wavelength campaign targeting the blazar 1ES 1218+30.4 with observations with the 1.3 m McGraw-Hill optical telescope, the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE), the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope, and the Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System (VERITAS). The RXTE and VERITAS observations were spread over a 13 day period and revealed clear evidence for flux variability, and a strong X-ray and gamma-ray flare on 2009 February 26 (MJD 54888). The campaign delivered a well-sampled broadband energy spectrum with simultaneous RXTE and VERITAS very high energy (VHE, > 100 GeV) observations, as well as contemporaneous optical and Fermi observations. The 1ES 1218+30.4 broadband energy spectrum-the first with simultaneous X-ray and VHE gamma-ray energy spectra-is of particular interest as the source is located at a high cosmological redshift for a VHE source (z = 0.182), leading to strong absorption of VHE gamma rays by photons from the optical/infrared extragalactic background light (EBL) via gamma VHE +gamma EBL -> e(+) e(-)pair-creation processes. We model the data with a one-zone synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) emission model and with the extragalactic absorption predicted by several recent EBL models. We find that the observations are consistent with the SSC scenario and all the EBL models considered in this work. We discuss observational and theoretical avenues to improve on the EBL constraints.

We report on deep observations of the extended TeV gamma-ray source MGRO J1908+06 made with the VERITAS very high energy (VHE) gamma-ray observatory. Previously, the TeV emission has been attributed to the pulsar wind nebula (PWN) of the Fermi-LAT pulsar PSR J1907+0602. We detect MGRO J1908+06 at a significance level of 14 standard deviations (14 sigma) and measure a photon index of 2.20 +/- 0.10_stat +/- 0.20_sys. The TeV emission is extended, covering the region near PSR J1907+0602 and also extending towards SNR G40.5--0.5. When fitted with a 2-dimensional Gaussian, the intrinsic extension has a standard deviation of sigma_src = 0.44 +/- 0.02 degrees. In contrast to other TeV PWNe of similar age in which the TeV spectrum softens with distance from the pulsar, the TeV spectrum measured near the pulsar location is consistent with that measured at a position near the rim of G40.5--0.5, 0.33 degrees away., To appear in ApJ, 8 pages

Exceptionally strong and long lasting flaring activity of the blazar Markarian 421 (Mrk 421) occurred between January and March 2001. Based on the excellent signal-to-noise ratio of the data we derive the energy spectrum between 260 GeV - 17 TeV with unprecedented statistical precision. The spectrum is not well described by a simple power law even with a curvature term. Instead the data can be described by a power law with exponential cutoff: $\rm {{dN}\over{dE}} \propto \rm E^{-2.14 \pm 0.03_{stat}} \times e^{-E/E_{0}} m^{-2} s^{-1} TeV^{-1}$ with $\rm E_{0} = 4.3 \pm 0.3_{stat} TeV$. Mrk 421 is the second $\gamma$-ray blazar that unambiguously exhibits an absorption-like feature in its spectral energy distribution at 3-6 TeV suggesting that this may be a universal phenomenon, possibly due to the extragalactic infra-red background radiation.

Daily aboveground activity of wild black-capped marmots of Yakutia (Marmota camtschatica bungei ) was recorded under 'polar day' conditions at 71°57' N and 127°19' E (north of the Polar Circle). From the beginning of May until the end of August, the sun was permanently above or close to the horizon. However under this condition of continuous lighting, the aboveground activity of these arctic hibernating mammals was periodic. Onset and end of activity showed marked changes throughout the seasons. Activity time increased strongly from hibernation emergence until the end of July and then decreased slowly until onset of hibernation. Below daily mean temperatures of 5 °C, activity started when the sun was 35° above the horizon, and ended when it dropped below 28°. When daily mean temperatures were above 5 °C, activity onset was synchronised with a solar altitude around 17-18° and activity ended at 10°. Activity onset was more precise relative to the solar altitude than the end of activity. This may be explained by late feeding bouts, following a midday thermal stress. In absence of rapid natural light-dark (LD) transitions that occur at civil twilight, our results suggest that the activity pattern of black-capped marmots may be synchronised by the light cycle through the solar altitude and ambient temperature. © 2001 Editions scientifiques et medicales Elsevier SAS

Regions with high star formation rates (SFR) in starburst galaxies (SBGs) are frequently accompanied by high density clouds of interstellar matter (ISM). This may create nearly perfect conditions for generating diffuse gamma-ray radiation as high energy cosmic rays accelerated in supernovae explosions of massive progenitor stars interact with the ambient protons. If the current paradigm that supernovae are the origin sites of high energy cosmic rays is valid, then the star forming regions rich in supernovae may become the laboratories to test and study this phenomenon. The gamma-ray luminosity of these extragalactic objects is suppressed by a large distance factor compared to supernovae in our own galaxy. However, flux estimates indicate that if star bursting regions have a proper combination of critical parameters (intersteller medium density, age, size, supernova rate, magnetic field strength) the cumulative enhancement of the gamma-ray luminosity resulting from multiple explosions of supernovae into dense ISM may generate an observable flux for nearby SBGs such as M82, IC342. A search for TeV gamma-ray emission from IC342 was conducted with the Whipple 10m gamma-ray telescope from September 2002 to March 2004.

The degradation of gas turbine parts due to aging leads to changes in airfoil shape and often causes performance loss. Although the degradation mechanisms and their effects on performance are understood in general (e.g. it is well known that fouling of compressor airfoils reduces mass flow and efficiency), the first quantitative relationships between specific types of part degradation and performance characteristics have only recently been published. In this paper the degradation of turbine blades with aft-loaded airfoils is considered. The typical deviations of shape were identified based on field experience. The effects of these deviations on turbine performance were assessed using different calculation methods, including 3D Navier-Stokes calculations and methods based on empirical correlations. The effect of blades-length reduction, chord-length reduction, changes in trailing-edge thickness and shape, and variation of stagger angle were analysed. The analysis showed that for aft-loaded airfoils without shrouds, the major influence on turbine performance is the degradation of radial clearances. A simplified engineering procedure allowing estimation of turbine performance loss due to degradation has been developed. This paper demonstrates how this simplified procedure, can be applied to the estimation of turbine recovery potential during a typical engine overhaul.

The CTA (Cherenkov Telescope Array) is the next generation ground-based experiment for very high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray observations. It will integrate several tens of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs) with different apertures into a single astronomical instrument. The US part of the CTA collaboration has proposed and is developing a novel IACT design with a Schwarzschild-Couder (SC) aplanatic two mirror optical system. In comparison with the traditional single mirror Davies-Cotton IACT the SC telescope, by design, can accommodate a wide field-of-view, with significantly improved imaging resolution. In addition, the reduced plate scale of an SC telescope makes it compatible with highly integrated cameras assembled from silicon photo multipliers. Flow distortions in front of turbomachines can lead to additional mechanical and thermal loading of the blades, and may influence the operational stability of the engine and the lifetime of its parts. In current design practice the impact of inflow distortions is accounted by safety margins, which are often conservative. Therefore the knowledge of real limits helps to increase operational flexibility and recommended service intervals. The distortions inside turbomachines have a wide spectrum of sizes and frequencies depending on their origin. Some of them were extensively studied in the recent years, including wakes interaction with blades, hot streaks propagation in turbines, and some other phenomenon. However, there are areas of practical importance, which are not yet covered by available studies. One of this distortion types is investigated in the present work. These are distortions of a size, comparable with the inlet guide vane pitch of a compressor or the nozzle guide vane pitch of a turbine, both steady in the absolute frame of reference. Such distortions in front of a compressor can be caused, for example, by fouling of the intake, or by some structures purposely installed inside the intake. The distortions in front of the expansion turbine can be caused by structures. Main purpose of the study is to provide an understanding of the decay mechanism of distortions considered. For this purpose the numerical and theoretical analysis of inflow distortion propagation inside the set of stationary and rotating blades cascades is performed. These cascades represent the mid-section of a typical multistage compressor and turbine. The analysis showed that the decay mechanism is different for temperature distortions and total pressure distortions, and that the latter one is stronger affected by the blading configuration.

We report the discovery of an unidentified, extended source of very-high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray emission, VER J2019+407, within the radio shell of the supernova remnant SNR G78.2+2.1, using 21.4 hours of data taken by the VERITAS gamma-ray observatory in 2009. These data confirm the preliminary indications of gamma-ray emission previously seen in a two-year (2007-2009) blind survey of the Cygnus region by VERITAS. VER J2019+407, which is detected at a post-trials significance of 7.5 standard deviations in the 2009 data, is localized to the northwestern rim of the remnant in a region of enhanced radio and X-ray emission. It has an intrinsic extent of 0.23^{\circ} \pm 0.03^{\circ} (stat)+0.04^{\circ}_{-0.02}^{\circ}(sys) and its spectrum is well-characterized by a differential power law (dN/dE = N_0 \times (E/TeV)^{-\Gamma}) with a photon index of {\Gamma} = 2.37 \pm 0.14 (stat) \pm 0.20 (sys) and a flux normalization of N0 = 1.5 \pm 0.2 (stat) \pm 0.4(sys) \times 10^-12 ph TeV^{-1} cm^{-2} s^{-1}. This yields an integral flux of 5.2 \pm 0.8 (stat) \pm 1.4 (sys) \times 10^-12 ph cm^{-2} s^{-1} above 320 GeV, corresponding to 3.7% of the Crab Nebula flux. We consider the relationship of the TeV gamma-ray emission with the GeV gamma-ray emission seen from SNR G78.2+2.1 as well as that seen from a nearby cocoon of freshly accelerated cosmic rays. We report the discovery of TeV gamma-ray emission coincident with the shell-type radio supernova remnant (SNR) CTA 1 using the VERITAS gamma-ray observatory. The source, VER J0006+729, was detected as a 6.5 standard deviation excess over background and shows an extended morphology, approximated by a two-dimensional Gaussian of semi-major (semi-minor) axis 0.30 degree (0.24 degree) and a centroid 5' from the Fermi gamma-ray pulsar PSR J0007+7303 and its X-ray pulsar wind nebula (PWN). The photon spectrum is well described by a power-law dN/dE = N_0 (E/3 TeV)^(-\Gamma), with a differential spectral index of \Gamma = 2.2 +- 0.2_stat +- 0.3_sys, and normalization N_0 = (9.1 +- 1.3_stat +- 1.7_sys) x 10^(-14) cm^(-2) s^(-1) TeV^(-1). The integral flux, F_\gamma = 4.0 x 10^(-12) erg cm^(-2) s^(-1) above 1 TeV, corresponds to 0.2% of the pulsar spin-down power at 1.4 kpc. The energetics, co-location with the SNR, and the relatively small extent of the TeV emission strongly argue for the PWN origin of the TeV photons. Many Alstom heavy-duty gas turbines with a silo combustor are in service and moreover undergoing upgrades for performance augmentation, lifetime extension, and emission reduction. Several structural parts of the combustor are exposed to high gas temperatures, and therefore their lifetime depends mainly on the metal temperatures, which must be kept within the acceptable limits. This paper describes methodology based on the state of the art methods of 3D CFD and finite element (FE) computations, which are combined into the computational process for the reliable silo combustor thermal analyses. In the first part of the paper the computational model of the silo combustor is discussed. The model comprises CFD models simulating the hot gas path and the cooling air supply system, as well as the FE model of the structural parts. The CFD models predict the gas temperatures and heat transfer coefficients that are used by the FE model for calculating the metal temperatures. In the second part of the paper the computational results are presented and several 3D flow phenomena are analysed in details. One effect is the interaction of dilution jets in swirled cross flow. At different operation conditions, pairing of those jets occurs, which generates the periodic metal temperature distribution, as recorded in the field. This analysis also revealed factors, which influence on the temperature distribution. The combustor simulation delivers an insight into non-homogeneous temperature profiles in front of the turbine behind the transition channel of the silo-combustor. Finally, by adding leakages into the flow model, the interesting example of the non-homogeneous leakage of cold air, which can lead to local increase of material temperature, was simulated. All these simulations led to reliable silo-combustor upgrades.

The VERITAS array of Cherenkov telescopes has carried out a deep observational program on the nearby dwarf spheroidal galaxy Segue 1. We report on the results of nearly 48 hours of good quality selected data, taken between January 2010 and May 2011. No significant $\gamma$-ray emission is detected at the nominal position of Segue 1, and upper limits on the integrated flux are derived. According to recent studies, Segue 1 is the most dark matter-dominated dwarf spheroidal galaxy currently known. We derive stringent bounds on various annihilating and decaying dark matter particle models. The upper limits on the velocity-weighted annihilation cross-section are $\mathrm{^{95% CL} \lesssim 10^{-23} cm^{3} s^{-1}}$, improving our limits from previous observations of dwarf spheroidal galaxies by at least a factor of two for dark matter particle masses $\mathrm{m_{\chi}\gtrsim 300 GeV}$. The lower limits on the decay lifetime are at the level of $\mathrm{\tau^{95% CL} \gtrsim 10^{24} s}$. Finally, we address the interpretation of the cosmic ray lepton anomalies measured by ATIC and PAMELA in terms of dark matter annihilation, and show that the VERITAS observations of Segue 1 disfavor such a scenario., Comment: Added recently published erratum at the end of the original article

The flow in exhaust diffusers along with the channel geometry strongly depends on the inflow conditions, including Mach number level, total pressure distribution, flow angle, and turbulence. In the first part of this paper, the impact of these parameters is analyzed using computational fluid dynamics, experimental data from the test rig, and field measurements. A widespread opinion is that the optimal condition for the diffuser is an axial uniform inflow. However, it is shown in this paper that nonuniform pressure distribution compared with a uniform one can lead to better diffuser performance and that a moderate residual swirl can improve the performance as well. In the second part of this paper, the minimization of exhaust losses in heavy-duty gas turbines is discussed and illustrated by two practical examples.

Multiwavelength observations of the high-frequency-peaked blazar 1ES 2344+514 were performed from October 2007 to January 2008. The campaign represents the first contemporanous data on the object at very high energy (VHE, E > 100 GeV) gamma-ray, X-ray, and UV energies. Observations with VERITAS in VHE gamma-rays yield a strong detection of 20 sigmas with 633 excess events in a total exposure of 18.1 hours live-time. A strong VHE gamma-ray flare on December 7, 2007 is measured at F(>300 GeV) = (6.76 ± 0.62) × 10^-11 cm^-2 s^-1 , corresponding to 48% of the Crab Nebula flux. Excluding this flaring episode, nightly variability at lower fluxes is observed with a time-averaged mean of F(>300 GeV) = (1.06 ± 0.09) × 10^-11 cm^-2 s^-1 (7.6% of the Crab Nebula flux). The differential photon spectrum between 390 GeV and 8.3 TeV for the time-averaged observations excluding December 7, 2007 is well described by a power law with a photon index of 2.78 ± 0.09 (stat) ± 0.15 (syst). A slightly harder photon index of 2.43 ± 0.22stat ± 0.15syst is measured on the flaring night of December 7, 2007. Over the full period of VERITAS observations contemporaneous X-ray and UV data were taken with Swift and RXTE. Variability by a factor of ~7 is evident in the 2-10 keV flux between nightly observations. On December 8, 2007 the highest ever observed X-ray flux from 1ES 2344+514 was measured by Swift XRT at a flux of F(2-10 keV) = (6.58 ± 0.37) × 10^-11 erg cm^-2 s^-1. Evidence for a correlation between the X-ray flux and VHE gamma-ray flux on nightly time-scales is indicated with a Pearson correlation coefficient of r = 0.60 ± 0.11. Contemporaneous spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of 1ES 2344+514 are presented for two distinct flux states. A one-zone synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) model describes both SEDs using parameters consistent with previous SSC modeling of 1ES 2344+514 from non-contemporaneous observations. Fil: Acciari, V. A.. We report the discovery of TeV gamma-ray emission from the Type Ia supernova remnant (SNR) G120.1+1.4, known as Tycho's supernova remnant. Observations performed in the period 2008-2010 with the VERITAS ground-based gamma-ray observatory reveal weak emission coming from the direction of the remnant, compatible with a point source located at $00^{\rm h} \ 25^{\rm m} \ 27.0^{\rm s},\ +64^{\circ} \ 10^{\prime} \ 50^{\prime\prime}$ (J2000). The TeV photon spectrum measured by VERITAS can be described with a power-law $dN/dE = C(E/3.42\;\textrm{TeV})^{-\Gamma}$ with $\Gamma = 1.95 \pm 0.51_{stat} \pm 0.30_{sys}$ and $C = (1.55 \pm 0.43_{stat} \pm 0.47_{sys}) \times 10^{-14}$ cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$TeV$^{-1}$. The integral flux above 1 TeV corresponds to $\sim 0.9%$ percent of the steady Crab Nebula emission above the same energy, making it one of the weakest sources yet detected in TeV gamma rays. We present both leptonic and hadronic models which can describe the data. The lowest magnetic field allowed in these models is $\sim 80 \mu$G, which may be interpreted as evidence for magnetic field amplification., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures. Accepted in ApJL

Experimental and theoretical investigations show that unsteady effects like moving wakes, tip vortices, passing shocks, pulsating injections and other similar structures significantly affect the aerodynamic characteristics of turbines and compressors. They also influence the thermal state and lifetime of components. Therefore it is very important for designers of turbomachines to properly simulate these effects. On the other hand, time-accurate computations are still expensive and require substantial resources in CPU and computer memory. Moreover the elapsed time is high. However in certain cases the numerical model for unsteady calculations can be simplified, allowing proper capture of the unsteadiness impact, but with much less required computing capacity. This makes the approach acceptable for design applications. Such a simplified method, applicable to a simulation of a steady jets array interaction with rotating components, is described in this paper. The flow in exhaust diffusers along with the channel geometry strongly depends on the inflow conditions, including Mach number level, total pressure distribution, flow angle, and turbulence. In the first part of this paper, the impact of these parameters is analyzed using CFD, experimental data from the test rig and field measurements. A widespread opinion is that the optimal condition for the diffuser is an axial uniform inflow. However, it is shown in this paper that non-uniform pressure distribution as compared to a uniform one can lead to better diffuser performance and that moderate residual swirl can improve the performance as well. In the second part of the paper, the minimization of exhaust losses in heavy-duty gas turbines is discussed and illustrated by two practical examples.Copyright © 2010 by Alstom Technology, Ltd.

Although Galactic cosmic rays (protons and nuclei) are widely believed to be dominantly accelerated by the winds and supernovae of massive stars, definitive evidence of this origin remains elusive nearly a century after their discovery [1]. The active regions of starburst galaxies have exceptionally high rates of star formation, and their large size, more than 50 times the diameter of similar Galactic regions, uniquely enables reliable calorimetric measurements of their potentially high cosmic-ray density [2]. The cosmic rays produced in the formation, life, and death of their massive stars are expected to eventually produce diffuse gamma-ray emission via their interactions with interstellar gas and radiation. M 82, the prototype small starburst galaxy, is predicted to be the brightest starburst galaxy in gamma rays [3, 4]. Here we report the detection of >700 GeV gamma rays from M 82. From these data we determine a cosmic-ray density of 250 eV cm-3 in the starburst core of M 82, or about 500 times the average Galactic density. This result strongly supports that cosmic-ray acceleration is tied to star formation activity, and that supernovae and massive-star winds are the dominant accelerators., 18 pages, 4 figures; published in Nature; Version is prior to Nature's in-house style editing (differences are minimal)

In most industrial turbines the cooling air for rotating turbine blades, is extracted from the compressor and transferred via passageways in the stationary parts and the rotor to the blade roots. These passages form the stator-rotor air transfer system (ATS). In stationary part of the ATS the air is usually pre-swirled in the direction of rotation to reduce the temperature and to minimize the losses in the transition area. This paper presents the investigations of the impact of the pre-swirl nozzle location on the ATS characteristics. Two ATSs have been compared. Both have a similar design, with the main difference related to the position of a pre-swirl nozzle. In the first system the pre-swirl nozzle is located at the inlet, and in the second it is located at the outlet of the stationary part of the ATS. The detailed flow structure and characteristics of both systems have been calculated using commercial CFD code. The 3-D calculations provide better insight into the dominant physical mechanisms in complex, rotating, turbulent flow and allow the calculation of the performance of these systems under various conditions. The CFD calculations have been used for the calibration of the cooling system hydraulic model, and the latter was compared with the available measured data. The study showed that the two ATSs considered have very similar characteristics (i.e. similar reduction of cooling air temperature and similar losses) despite the fact that the flow structure is significantly different. Therefore, this design can be considered as neutral to the pre-swirl nozzle location, and this is a positive feature ensuring flexibility of the system.Copyright © 2009 by ALSTOM
