To achieve a high activity and coking stability of nickel catalysts in dry reforming of methane, materials comprised of ceria–zirconia doped by Ti were investigated as supports. Ceria–zirconia supports doped with titanium were prepared either via the Pechini method or by synthesis in supercritical alcohol media. Ni-containing catalysts were prepared by two techniques: standard incipient wetness impregnation and one-pot synthesis. The catalytic reaction of DRM to synthesis gas was carried out in the 600–750 °C range over 5% wt. Ni/Ce(Ti)ZrO2. Dried and calcined supports and catalysts were characterized by physicochemical methods including N2 adsorption, XRD, Raman, H2-TPR, and HRTEM. Both preparation methods led to formation of solid solution with cubic fluorite-like structure, as well as after addition of Ti. Introduction of Ti should provide improved oxygen storage capacity and mobility of support oxygen. The highest activity was observed with the catalyst of 5% wt. Ni/Ce0.75Ti0.2Zr0.05O2−δ composition due to optimized oxide support structure and support oxygen mobility.

A series of 5%Ni-CexZr1−xO2 (x = 0.3, 0.5, 0.7) catalysts has been prepared via one-pot solvothermal continuous synthesis in supercritical isopropanol and incipient wetness impregnation of CexZr1−xO2 obtained by the same route. The textural, structural, red-ox, and catalytic properties in methane dry reforming (MDR) of Ni-modified Ce-Zr oxides synthesized by two routes have been compared. It was shown by XRD, TEM, and Raman spectroscopy that the method of Ni introduction does not affect the phase composition of the catalysts, but determines the dispersion of NiO. Despite a high dispersion of NiO and near-uniform distribution of Ni within Ce-Zr particles observed for the one-pot catalysts, they have shown a lower activity and stability in MDR as compared with impregnated ones. This is a result of a low Ni concentration in the surface layer due to segregation of Ce and decoration of nickel nanoparticles with support species.

BackgroundThe natural killer (NK) activity of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) is a crucial defense against the onset and spread of cancer. Studies have shown that patients with reduced NK activity are more susceptible to cancer, and NK activity tends to decrease due to cancer-induced immune suppression. Enhancing the natural cytotoxicity of PBMCs remains a significant task in cancer research.MethodsThis study investigates the potential of urolithin A, a polyphenolic metabolite produced by the gut microbiota, to enhance the natural cytotoxicity of PBMCs in prostate cancer patients and healthy subjects. We investigated the possible role of aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) in this capability of urolithin A. We analyzed the ability of PBMCs preincubated with urolithin A, AhR agonist or antagonist to kill K562 (human chronic myelogenous leukemia) target cells.ResultsOur results demonstrate that urolithin A enhances the natural cytotoxicity of PBMCs in a dose-dependent manner. Specifically, at a concentration of 10 μM, urolithin A increased the NK activity of PBMCs from prostate cancer patients by an average of 23% (95% CI, 7%–38%). In addition, urolithin A modulates the level of cytokine production by PBMCs, decreasing the level of fractalkine, IL-8, and MCP-3. An AhR antagonist (CH223191, 1 μM) also increased NK activity, while an AhR agonist (β-naphthoflavone, 10 μM) did not increase NK activity and partially inhibited the urolithin A-induced enhancement.ConclusionUrolithin A increases the NK activity of PBMCs from patients with prostate cancer and healthy subjects, and the AhR may be involved in this capability of urolithin A.

Glatiramer acetate (GA) is approved for the treatment of multiple sclerosis (MS). However, the mechanism of action of GA in MS is still unclear. In particular, it is not known whether GA can modulate the pro-inflammatory Th17-type immune response in MS. We investigated the effects of original GA (Copaxone®, Teva, Israel) and generic GA (Timexone®, Biocad, Russia) on Th17- and Th1-type cytokine production in vitro in 25 patients with relapsing-remitting MS and 25 healthy subjects. Both original and generic GA at concentrations 50-200 μg/ml dose-dependently inhibited interleukin-17 and interferon-γ production by anti-CD3/anti-CD28-activated peripheral blood mononuclear cells from MS patients and healthy subjects. This effect of GA was reproduced using purified CD4+ T cells, suggesting that GA can directly modulate the functions of Th17 and Th1 cells. At high concentrations (100-200 μg/ml), GA also suppressed the production of Th17-differentiation cytokines (interleukin-1β and interleukin-6) by lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-activated dendritic cells (DCs). These GA/LPS-treated DCs induced lower interleukin-17 and interferon-γ production by autologous CD4+ T cells compared to LPS-treated DCs. These data suggest that GA can inhibit Th17-immune response and that this inhibitory effect is preferentially exercised by direct influence of GA on T cells. We also demonstrate a comparable ability of original and generic GA to modulate pro-inflammatory cytokine production.

An increase of multiple sclerosis (MS) incidence has been reported during the last decade, and this may be connected to environmental factors. This review article aims to encapsulate the current advances targeting the study of the gut–brain axis, which mediates the communication between the central nervous system and the gut microbiome. Clinical data arising from many research studies, which have assessed the effects of administered disease-modifying treatments in MS patients to the gut microbiome, are also recapitulated.
